Check them out! Still in the well-being frenzy, we went for a fantastic candle massage experience at The Spa, Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay. A place that will offer you extraordinary ‘me-time’. Our fashion pages bring what to wear this autumn. The weather hasn’t changed much, but there are a few trends that we can easily accommodate in our Middle Eastern pre-winter wardrobes. Fernanda Langhammer Editor-in-Chief @ohlalamagazine editor@ohlala-magazine.comWhat are the must-have shoe styles for autumn and winter 2023? These are the ones to fall in love with!
Rainy days and muddy terrain (we all know muddy sand is not fun) require footwear that can take you easily everywhere. Many brands considered that this season and made thick rubber soles quite trendy – even Christian Louboutin embraced the rough look.
Mary Jane shoes appeared in the early 20th century and became popular in the 1920s. They’ve never been out of style ever since. Fendi reinterprets this classic design by adding an extra strap attached to the heel –beautifully engineered footwear for an awesome effect.
Mules are convenient footwear that give an effortless, sophisticated touch to your looks. These from Jil Sander at FARFETCH have a cute kitten heel and a metallic circle detail – on the wish list they go!
Platforms are still pretty trendy and Etro add embroidery to their eyecatching creations –living the ‘high life’ in style!
Boots are the ultimate footwear during cold months. Isabel Marant has an eye-catching design with an extra wide shaft, perfect for tucking in your stylish wide-legged trousers. They also look fabulous with skirts!
Autumn is here, but the landscape surrounding us stays the same in this part of the globe. Express your love for the season by painting your handbags with the colour transformation that occurs in nature during this time – a palette that embraces dark green, yellow, red and brown.
Take your rejuvenating escape at our island resort.
Pamper yourself with Moroccan hammam rituals, relish the bespoke sensory candle massage and unwind in the pure Himalayan salt relaxation room.

This feminine detail has invaded the autumn and winter collections. It appears in different sizes and shapes – some more abstract than others –applied to tops, dresses and accessories. A bow will do the trick if you are looking for a subtle, eye-catching detail!
Skirts come in a vast style portfolio. However, one detail that caught our attention this season is the front slit cut spotted everywhere. A design detail that works particularly well in midi skirts – bare your legs in a stylish way!
A piece of fabric can be transformed into amazing clothes, it has a lot to do with stitching techniques. The folded effect from pleats gives a new dimension to dresses and skirts, creating a sleek, refined look. This season, opt for shiny textiles for extra oomph.
This colour palette takes us on a whimsical walk deep into a forest where little light enters the darkness. While there, we spot a few pinkish flowers bathing in the scarce rays of light. We mix and match army green, black, tawny brown and rose pink to recreate this dainty dream.
Brand collaborations, a cultural touch and an exciting short movie made the cut to our news roundup this month.
The innovative (sometimes bordering on eccentric) brand Maison Margiela has launched a collaboration with Pendleton, a lifestyle leader in wool blankets, apparel and accessories. Presented as part of the Co-Ed 2023 Collection, the creative dialogue fuses the plaids of the American heritage weaver with the haute couture grammar of Creative Director John Galliano. Pendleton mirrors the principles of authenticity at the heart of Maison Margiela. Founded in Oregon in 1863, the company presides over two of the few remaining woollen mills in the United States and employs old-world looms and traditional methods of dyeing in the creation of its woven plaids. The collaboration focuses on three mid-century weaves handpicked by John Galliano from the Pendleton archives: a red buffalo pattern, a sunset plaid in pink and blue pastels and a windowpane check in red, white and black. The garments are a mix of traditional patterns and innovative designs.
It is common to see two brands partnering to create unique products, but this time, an art institution meets a cosmetic giant. The Louvre Museum in France and Lancôme have joined forces in an exciting collaboration. Inspired by nine masterpieces from the sculpture department and the museum’s lights and colours, Lancôme has designed a limited-edition of skincare and make-up products signed Lancôme x Louvre. Venus de Milo, Victory of Samothrace, Corine, Diana of Gabies, Nymphe with a Scorpion, Echo, Hygieia, Venus of Arles and, finally, Hermaphrodite were the masterpieces used as references to create this capsule. Through their stories and the myths they embody, each of them inspired Lisa Eldridge, Global Creative Director of Lancôme Makeup, to produce this collection. The Richelieu Wing Face & Eyeshadow Palette, Advanced Génifique Serum and L’Absolu Rouge Matte Lipstick are part of the Louvre limited edition collection.
An exciting collaboration for footwear lovers, the Italian brand Miu Miu is partnering with well-known British shoemaker Church’s for a special capsule. It infuses the formality and heritage of the English label with the free spirit Miu Miu represents. Crafted in glossed brushed leather and in classic shades of black and tobacco, the Church's x Miu Miu shoes are rounded and broader in shape than the originals that inspire them. A malleable, nonslip, sporty moulded rubber sole replaces leather, and a patterned serration characterises the styles. Further rich detailing includes the Miu Miu logo on the tongues of the shoes and embossed into the sides of the soles and the Church's x Miu Miu logo printed on the insoles. The double monk strap shoes are further embellished with the classic wingtip motif that emphasises the foundations of Church’s designs. This collection can add a creative masculine touch to your looks.

Etro unveils Radical Etro, a documentary featuring Marco De Vincenzo (the brand’s Creative Director) as he reflects on his work and role by sharing an unfiltered view of himself through the lens of director Beniamino Barrese. Shot last February in the days leading up to the Etro Women’s Autumn and Winter 2023 Fashion Show, the film represents a personal and realistic narrative with a free flow of thoughts and consciousness that shows the human side of Marco De Vincenzo, merging the emotional facets of creativity with the doubts and uncertainties preceding the day of the show. In paying homage to Etro’s past, present and future, his radical perspective takes shape as a heartfelt dialogue that reveals the man and his innermost feelings even more so than a professional portrait. The documentary is available on Etro.com, Etro’s Instagram and YouTube channels.

Graff unveil an impressive new multifaceted brand campaign.
Graff, the luxury jewellers based in London, have announced a new campaign bringing together exceptional creations from their four key collections – Butterfly, Tilda’s Bow, Laurence Graff Signature and Wild Flower.
The campaign brings together fine diamond collections and high jewellery for the very first time and is being presented by captivating Dutch model Rianne Van Rompaey. A new face for the brand, she perfectly embodies the coveted confidence Graff jewels inspire.
Styled by Emmanuelle Alt (former editor of Vogue Paris) and captured by photographer Mikael Jansson, Rianne’s story plays out at the legendary Villa La Vigie against the backdrop of the Cote d’Azur in France. The property and the grounds surrounding Villa La Vigie provide an exquisite backdrop for Rianne as she manifests the transformative power of Butterfly, the nostalgic elegance of Tilda’s Bow, the dynamism of Laurence Graff Signature and the strength and beauty of Wild Flower. The campaign story culminates in the opulent luxury and pure joy of a Graff high jewellery festive season. It signifies a new creative direction for the brand – aligning with a comprehensive refocusing of their communications – to create an intense visual and emotional world for the house while developing a product- and collection-led approach to storytelling.
While the business was founded over 60 years ago with a singular focus on historic diamonds, high jewellery and individual pieces, it has since introduced ground-breaking diamond design and craftsmanship in the form of bridal, watches, fine diamond collections and, most recently, fragrance. Francois Graff, Chief Executive Officer at Graff, said: “As the global reach of the Graff business and audience grows, so too does the need to communicate our core values. In line with this, we have also taken the opportunity to evolve our boutique experience, ensuring it reflects our creative direction with a clear focus on a holistic client experience.”
Since 2019, the house has experienced exponential growth within its diamond collections, launching and developing signature lines, including the much-loved Graff Butterfly, symbolising transformation, opportunity and beginnings.
Bernadette Kennedy, Chief Marketing Officer at Graff, continues: “Graff is attracting new clientele, whether through the craftsmanship and artistry of its high jewellery pieces or its contemporary diamond collections, which are beautifully designed to be worn every day.
“As a result, we have worked to refine our brand focus to ensure we are clearly and succinctly communicating the unique nature of Graff to our audiences within every category. Moving from individual collections and high jewellery campaigns to creating a single universe creates a tangible message that speaks to all; Graff truly is the home of the most fabulous jewels in the world.”

CHANEL present an updated formula and new shades in one of their most beloved ranges: LES BEIGES.
Created by perfumer Christine Nagel, the story behind Tutti Twilly d’Hermès reflects the Hermès girls’ bond, their joy in being all different but part of the same clan without losing their own pertinent style. It is a tribute to their free spirit – a blend of daring and lightheartedness – and multifaceted nature.
The scent is a floral and fruity eau de parfum that opens with ginger blossom notes, has an exhilarating mellow lychee hint, and is enveloped with musk. The fragrance matches the promise of a great day for this tribe of strong-willed girls. It welcomes those who dare and are spontaneous and unfettered by convention. They swarm across the globe, creating a buzz and breaking down barriers, and this is the scent to take them on this daily journey.
The bottle was designed by Florence Manlik in a lantern-shaped silhouette, adorned with a lycheered colour graduation. The lid is a feminine version of a bowler hat, and the hand-tied silk ribbon playfully adds a final flourish. Each silk ribbon is unique and evokes Hermès silk métier.
Tutti Twilly d’Hermès comes in 15, 30, 50 and 85ml sizes and is available in selected Hermès retail outlets worldwide.
Inspired by the Hermès girls, Tutti Twilly d’Hermès is the new fragrance from this iconic French brand.
An enhanced feeling of well-being is what Fernanda Langhammer experienced after a candle massage at The Spa at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay. Check out why you should also try it!
This month, we celebrate wellness in our issue. After reading so many tips from experts in the field, I wondered at how much I still see spa treatments as a luxury treat and not a health necessity. I decided it was time to change this perspective (I highly recommend you do the same) and went for a massage at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay. They invited me to try the Sensory Journey Candle Massage – one of the trendiest therapies of the moment – that promotes deep relaxation and nourishment.
I love the hotel’s lobby, so I always park my car close to the main entrance, forcing me to cross the entire area and walk the well-illuminated corridor with natural light towards a side spa entrance. For me, this little walk makes me smile every time, and I reach the spa in a brighter mood. You know you’ve arrived there when the floor tiling changes to the vintage Cotto style (a terracotta handmade tile using a slow but simple process which has been the same since Roman times) characteristic to the entire spa area. On the ceiling, a magnificent Venitian-inspired chandelier and below it, an arrangement of green plants and orchids set the tone. The reception is home to a fine selection of pool and beach garments, accessories and outstanding skincare products. Receptionist Myo welcomed me to the spa and gave me a juice called Inner Glow with collagen properties and a refreshing watermelon flavour. Next to the drink, I found a cold towel with a delicious lemongrass and ginger scent. I cleaned my hands, and Myo handed me an iPad to fill in the guest health questionnaire. It asked for some personal information but also my preferred type of pressure and music to be played in the treatment room. I was then introduced to Nowa, who assisted me through the spa’s corridors (it can be quite a maze) and helped me with the locker – inside it, all the amenities one would need on a spa day.
I quickly swapped my work clothes for a super soft robe. The changing area is extensive, with many cubbies, private chambers and strategically placed vanity counters with products like hair spray, deodorant, body lotion and more. Nowa then led me to Rattaya, my therapist for the day, who was waiting for me at the beginning of the treatment-room gallery. In this part of the spa, the light changes and gets more intimate, putting you in a peaceful mood. The Spa has 17 treatment rooms conceived by PierreYves Rochon, a French interior designer renowned worldwide for creating solutions for luxury hospitality. The terracotta floor and very tall doors in light green paint give an old villa vibe to the whole space, contrasting with the hotel’s sleek design. It is a sophisticated area with a welcoming and pleasant touch.
As I entered the room, Rattaya started with the foot ritual. A bowl with warm water and lemon slices was placed on the floor, waiting for my feet. She then applied the mint scrub while going through the answers I gave on the iPad with my massage preferences. Nature sounds were playing, and my mind drifted away in this perfect environment to unwind. The room was dimly lit, and I could see the flickering of the candle. It was my first time having this type of massage, and I have to confess that I was a bit worried about how it would be done. The candle used was Paillettes d’Ambre from marocMaroc. Just to clarify, what’s used in this therapy are special massage candles; they have a completely different composition, so please don’t try to have a massage with a regular candle. These are made with natural oils and a tree resin that gives them a soft and silky texture. The Paillettes d’Ambre has a sweet cinnamon base note and myrrh – the smell is subtle and provides a beautiful aromatic sense. Rattaya extinguished the candle and started the treatment by pouring the melted wax onto my body, which felt like a warm, thick oil. I drifted away, letting myself become absorbed into this pampering moment.
I have to say that I didn’t know what to expect, but I will only book candle massages from now on when looking for deep relaxation. I am sure Rattaya’s wonderful hands and skills played a significant role in giving me one of the best relaxing massages I have ever had, but the feeling of the dense liquid on my skin was quite comforting. It felt much nicer than the regular oil – my skin was incredibly soft, and the massage feeling lasted longer. I also have to say that the gentle but firm touch worked wonders on my back knots. Rattaya understood that they had been there for a very long time and treated them with respect without trying to dissolve them in one go. She applied a firm pressure, but it was not painful at any
moment. I was relieved and thankful. She ended the session with a scalp massage, and I kept thinking about how I would fit another massage the following week into my busy schedule. I then sat in a comfortable area to sip my jasmine tea and prepare myself to return to reality. I followed my therapist’s recommendation and didn’t take a shower after; I just slipped into my work clothes again, went to one of the beauty counters, applied my make-up and left the premises feeling lighter and in one of my best moods. This proves that adding spa treatments to your daily life results in incredible benefits to your overall health. What are you waiting for to book an appointment?
After the treatment, we had the pleasure of speaking with the Director of The Spa at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay, Nikolay Dimitrov. He tells us more about his experience and gives us an insight into this luxurious spa and wellness centre.
OHLALA – What made you follow the wellness career path?
Nikolay Dimitrov – Growing up, I spent a lot of time in hotels because my father was working in a hotel’s engineering department. I vividly recall spending a significant amount of time in pools and fitness centres during that period. It seems that my affinity for spas and wellness stemmed from those early experiences. Inspired by my mother, a doctor, I pursued a degree in physiotherapy and subsequently found myself drawn to the world of luxury hotels. Combining this background with my father’s expertise in this industry, I naturally gravitated towards incorporating healthcare and wellness into my work within five-star establishments.
OHLALA – What do you like most about your profession?
Nikolay – Working in an upscale spa and hotel feels like stepping into Alice in Wonderland – each day is filled with excitement and unpredictability. From encounters with diverse individuals to navigating unexpected situations, there’s never a dull moment. My role revolves around interacting with our valued spa members and hotel guests, intending to craft an oasis where guests can find respite from the demands of everyday life. I take great joy in creating a distinctive experience through exceptional products and services, ensuring that every visit is truly memorable.
OHLALA – What makes The Spa at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay unique?
Nikolay – Our spa team at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay combines the renowned luxury guest experience of Four Seasons with their exceptional skills to create unforgettable moments for our customers. Our team members are proficient in their expertise, ensuring a high level of service. Advanced equipment, modern amenities and welldesigned spaces add to the overall ambience and comfort, allowing guests to fully unwind and rejuvenate. With 17 treatment rooms designed by Pierre-Yves Rochon, it is one of the most extensive spa facilities of Four Seasons globally – but how we make a difference is the genuine hospitality, acts of kindness and personalised service from our dedicated staff.
OHLALA – What do you want to achieve with the menu offered? What do you want your customers to feel after a treatment?
Nikolay – I believe it is crucial for everyone to prioritise self-care and focus on their well-being. That’s why we offer a wide range of options to cater to different preferences. Some of our offerings are wellness focussed and tailored specifically for our spa members, such as fitness classes and personal training. Others are designed to provide a tranquil and relaxing experience. We aim to ensure that every guest and member finds their favourite activity among our offerings. We take pride in the creativity and professionalism of our team, which is consistently reflected in the overwhelmingly positive feedback we receive. It is our goal to make our guests feel pampered, well taken care of and truly delighted.
OHLALA – What therapies do you offer that, in your opinion, are a must-try?
Nikolay – I highly recommend experiencing our classic 90-minute Aromatherapy Massage at least once a month – it’s an absolute must! For those with a romantic spirit or those seeking to pamper their loved ones, I encourage them to try our newest package, the Night Spa for two. This popular experience begins at 11pm daily and accommodates only one booking per night. It starts with a relaxing 60-minute aromatherapy couple’s massage in the privacy of our lavishly decorated indoor pool area. Afterwards, guests can indulge in sparkling grape, chocolates, macarons, fruits and have a blissful private time at the indoor pool and spa from midnight to 1am. Another highly soughtafter option is our Day Spafternoon Tea Package, which includes an indulgent Hammam experience and a rejuvenating facial.
OHLALA – What is your ultimate wellness tip?
Nikolay – The key to maintaining wellness is consistency. Amidst life’s demands, embrace a daily fitness routine: 30 minutes of cardio and weights, with a single rest day. I personally do this routine early in the morning before work, my kids’ school and other responsibilities, as it makes me feel good, sharp and on point. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, especially in hot weather – aim for at least eight to 10 glasses daily. Eliminate sugar from your diet for improved well-being. Additionally, prioritise quality sleep and recovery. I recommend getting at least seven hours of sleep each night and treating yourself to two monthly massages for optimal results.
For more information or to book an appointment, please call The Spa at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay on 1711 5045.

Summer break seems to have happened a long time ago and it is now far behind us (for those who escaped the heat or had the opportunity to press pause), and the hustle and bustle of our routines and responsibilities has gotten to us once again. There is no better time to re-think your well-being and create a plan to achieve your wellness goals than now. This moment of transitioning from holiday to real life is the best chance to reflect on how you are balancing your life. Are you taking the time to take care of yourself? Wellness means the act of practising healthy habits on a daily basis to achieve better physical and mental health. We are in this life to not only survive but thrive! Focusing on your well-being is a way to walk on earth in your best version. It involves exercise and nutrition but also sleep, mindfulness and social connectedness. Inspired by this theme, we selected some of the best spas in Bahrain to give us exclusive ultimate well-being tips from their managers and directors. They also tell us why their wellness haven is unique, and we ask them to highlight two treatments in their properties that you can’t miss. Check them out!
This month, we are dedicating some of our pages to this topic, which has become more significant than ever, by bringing messages from experts in the field and compiling extraordinary treatments.

@gulfspabh @thegulfhotelbh“There are many elements defining wellness, all equally important, and sometimes we overlook the benefits. From my perspective, finding balance in life is important. It is essential for every person to learn how to restore and take care of themselves. Whether we want to relax in a sauna, exercise or simply have a breathwork relaxation session, all these self-care rituals are components of a person’s well-being.”

The key element of Thai massage is keeping a safe performance and true relaxation of body and mind. The technique comes from traditional Thai curing methods where life energy is improved using enough pressure that is firmly applied and released slowly. The flow of the massaging movement is maintained without disruption – steady and slow to keep the state of complete relaxation. If you are dealing with joint or body pain and low energy, you will be more likely to have immediate benefit from Thai massages. However, you should also play an active role in self-stretching and strengthening exercises.
Signature Cleopatra 24-Carat Gold Facial
Live like a queen for a day. This treatment includes exfoliation, toning, LED light, firming massage, gold luxury mask and moisturisation. The magic of gold and its properties works on skin’s moisture level. The small particles of gold absorbed in the cells make your skin fresh, healthy and radiant with a rich glow. It improves skin hydration, prevents premature ageing, and maintains firmness, texture and tone while also eliminating the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

“Wellness should not be a luxury commodity. At any age, you should be committing to your best health and well-being first, to be the best version of yourself. Also, anyone’s transformation should not only focus on the physical aesthetic, but in wellness, energy and, most importantly, joie de vivre.”
— Louise Cogan, Spa Director and Founder at Cocoon Wellness Spa Juffair“These are my tips: meditation in the morning before checking the phone. Apply an ice-cold towel to the eye area to reduce puffiness. Engage in a workout to improve circulation. Skincare routine with Biologique Recherche products. Have a booster shot of ginger with carrot to rejuvenate and reduce inflammation and lastly, night skincare before going to bed. “

“Embrace the art of wellness as a vibrant symphony, orchestrating harmonious melodies that resonate through your entire being. It is the dance of life, where every step leads you closer to a lively existence, nourishing your physical and mental well-being. My tip to everyone, including myself, is to prioritise self-care: carve out time for activities that nourish your mind, body and spirit. Nurture your body with healthy foods, invigorating movement, hydration and restful slumber. Find activities you enjoy and make exercise a regular part of your routine. Inhale, hold, exhale, let this rhythmic mantra guide your steps towards a life of wellness.”
— Tamar Badzagua, Spa and Recreation Manager at The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa“Walking and body brushing. Walking outside in the cooler weather gives a sense of wellbeing, especially if you can be anywhere near nature. I always suggest a walk without a mobile phone and having a digital detox for that one hour per day. This act gives us time to disconnect and recharge, not to mention the benefits of walking, as it is a non-impact exercise that increases circulation and endorphins, making you feel positive! Dry skin brushing is also an excellent way to increase circulation and exfoliate your skin. We have dry body brushes by ESPA to retail in the spa, and I never travel without one.”
—Michelle Reynolds, Spa Director at The Ritz-Carlton SpaThe Ritz-Carlton Spa is unique as it has been the home of many hotel members for many years; it is very comforting. It also has an original feature, the Thalasso Therapy pool, which has therapeutic benefits with purely salt water. This simple yet powerful morning ritual can give you an instant pick-me-up! Your nighttime routine is as important. A warm bath before bedtime can help relax the muscles and improve sleep. The Autumn and Winter 2023 collection is composed of timeless designs for an ageless wardrobe. Stella McCartney has always been inspired by nature and this season, she emphasises her love for trees. Sustainability has been a core value of the brand since its inception. For this collection, 94% of the ready-to-wear pieces are made from conscious materials – it is Stella McCartney’s most nature-positive collection to date.
One of the materials used is a forest-friendly viscose, a versatile fabric Stella has developed with exclusive weaves and finishes. This innovative textile is made using traceable FSCcertified wood pulp from sustainably managed forests – as part of the brand’s zerodeforestation commitment. Abstracted tree-bark jacquards are rendered in shiny black double weave fil coupé lurex on forest-friendly viscose dresses and separates. Tree bark is also expressed across oversized, woodgrain belted Teddy coats and jumpers crafted from a cruelty-free wool blend. Another inspiration comes from the designer’s grandmother’s wardrobe, deconstructing classic pieces and styling vintage elements in modern ways such as boxy, cropped jackets with frayed hems, wide-legged trousers, asymmetric skirts and square-necked dresses. Pearls have been embroidered onto black tailoring and eye-catching prints. The accessories edit focuses on Stella’s most iconic creations, with the Frayme bag returning in mixed-material recycled vegan python and studded styles – all handcrafted in Italy from vegan materials. The Falabella is revisited in textural grey tweed and Fur Free Fur, while the S-Wave is seen in python and padded, studded versions. The footwear collection includes heels in pointed pumps, pearl-embellished transparent stiletto editions and stretch ankle and over-the-knee boots in vegan python. A casual energy progresses in block-soled Skyla boots and wedges with chain details alongside Fur Free Fur slides.
Stella McCartney is a synonymous with a laid-back wardrobe for those looking for comfort, subtle sophistication and environment-friendly creations.
@stellamccartneyWe celebrate fashion with the French Embassy in Bahrain. This month, we had the opportunity to interview the Fashion Week Paris to Manama 2022 competition winners.
To support youth in Bahrain, the French Embassy started a fashion initiative to promote creative talents on the island. The event, called Fashion Week Paris to Manama (FWPM), is now in its third edition and growing exponentially.
Professionals from the renowned ESMOD Dubai and local and regional names in the field are involved in the project. Workshops and a competition are part of the programme. It is an exciting fashion-driven event, a subject so intrinsic to French culture, that has solidified its importance in the fashion scene in Bahrain.
This year, the event will start on October 22 and end on October 26 with a unique fashion show hosted by the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities at the Pearling Path Visitor Center.
On the 22, the awarded designers of the 2022 edition will open the week, presenting their new capsule collections and talking about their respective experiences and projects. With the support of Tamkeen, three of them went to France last summer, for an internship at Promostyl Paris and to attend summer courses at the Institut Français de la Mode. The other two winners created their new collections with the guidance Mode (IFM) and expertise of Hydur Workshop.
OHLALA had the opportunity to talk to them, and we bring an insight into their experience in this inspiring project.
My connection to fashion is deeply rooted in the influence of my parents. My father, who owns a tailoring factory, Al Shakar Tailoring, has been a prominent figure in shaping my relationship with the fashion world. I enjoyed experimenting with fabrics and reviving items from my wardrobe instead of discarding them. Fashion is not just a passion but a source of inspiration. It’s an art form I will forever be connected and attracted to.
Why have you decided to compete and be part of Fashion Week Paris to Manama (FWPM)?
I decided to compete and be part of FWPM to raise awareness of the negative impact the fashion industry can have on our environment by showcasing the potential of upcycling and repurposing existing highquality and vintage garments. Additionally, I aimed to share my innovative techniques and creative talent while paying homage to the craftsmanship and legacy of my father’s business.
What was the prize you won, and how has the experience been so far?
I was given the opportunity to embark on a transformative journey in Paris, dedicating four months to enhancing my expertise within the fashion industry. During this period, I worked with a fashion consultancy agency, Promostyl Paris, and attended a one-month course at the IFM, during which I completed a course in luxury management and a course in upcycling.
What can we expect from your capsule collection that will be showcased in this year’s edition? Do you think you are better prepared to put your collection together this time?
I believe my upcoming capsule collection will be a culmination of both my Parisian experience and my previous collection. Drawing inspiration from my FWPM 2022 showcase and the creations from the upcycling course at IFM. I definitely feel well-prepared this time around because I know what to expect.
Why Fashion?
I always find it impressive how someone can express themselves through what they wear. Fashion is a space where numerous cultural meanings have been represented, innovative signs have come to life and concurrent purposes have been communicated. A fashion designer can be an artist, crafter and storyteller all at once. I believe that this is what fashion needs today to bring originality to the world.
What was the prize you won, and how has the experience been so far?
I won a chance to collaborate with Hydur Workshop to assist me in creating my next collection, and it has been a great pleasure to work with such a talented team filled with hard-working individuals.
What can we expect from your capsule collection that will be showcased in this year’s edition? Do you think you are better prepared to put your collection together this time?
I believe that in this year’s capsule, I made an effort to show significant progress over last year’s creation, particularly in the fabric choices and stitching techniques. I am better prepared now that I know what was lacking in my previous experience. Furthermore, I wanted to think about this collection in a way that allows me to combine what I see when I think about the word ‘couture’ and costume design in a form that meets the fashion of our current era and what the market requires.
What is your advice for those competing in this year’s edition? When the process becomes difficult and overwhelming, this is the point at which you have to keep going because you will be eternally grateful for not backing up and discovering the true artist within you, and never be hesitant to share your thoughts, no matter how tiny, strange, crazy or magnificent they are; this is what distinguishes you and makes you unique.
Why did you decide to compete and be part of FWPM?
Fashion Week Paris to Manama was a dream I dreamt of one day, and it became true. When I learned about it, I didn’t hesitate to apply and be part of it. I had big dreams and a lot to show to the world. I needed to show everyone my passion and love for fashion and couture dresses. FWPM was a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity that I decided to take and make the best out of it.
How did you feel about winning? What does this achievement mean to your career?
The feeling I felt hearing my name as a winner is something I would never be able to express in words. Winning such a huge fashion competition in Bahrain, while it was my first time competing in fashion, was overwhelming. That’s the moment when I witnessed all my efforts and months of hard work and dedication paying off. This achievement was a significant push to my career and has always been my motivation.
What was the prize you won, and how has the experience been so far?
The prize I won was the ‘Best Emerging Talent’ who impressed the jury and, by that, I won a chance to produce a five-piece collection with Hydur Workshop, which is my capsule that will be showcased in this year’s opening ceremony – I’m so excited and eagerly waiting for this year’s edition. The collection is full of challenges, structural techniques and details. It is inspired by curved architectural monuments, with a touch of pop art colours embracing femininity.
What is your advice for those competing in this year’s edition?
My advice for the fashion designers competing this year is to dream big and persevere to reach your aim. This is your time and opportunity to shine and show yourself and your talent to the world. FWPM is the gate that will guide you through your career, so make the best out of it, and don’t forget to enjoy your journey while working hard towards reaching your dreams.
How did you feel about winning? What does this achievement mean to your career?
It was a great feeling; my confidence increased, and I was sure that I would gain something from this programme and it would add to me.
What was the prize you won, and how has the experience been so far?
That day, I contended for the ‘Best Innovation’ award. The prize included two courses in Paris last July at IFM. Additionally, I received the latest 2023 trend book from Promostyl Paris, and I had the honour to receive a symbolic medal marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between France and Bahrain.
What can we expect from your capsule collection that will be showcased in this year’s edition? What was your inspiration for it?
My latest collection is inspired by the piece I wore at the previous fashion show, FWPM 2022. This piece received a lot of attention and inquiries, so I decided to display more of my plain pieces, adding a unique twist to each one.
What is your advice for those competing in this year’s edition?
I advise this year’s competitors to have faith in their passion and themselves. Show what you are capable of and put your heart into the collection. Draw inspiration from anything you encounter in your daily life, anywhere at all.
Why did you decide to compete and be part of FWPM?
I chose to be part of the fashion show to showcase my talent because it’s unique and new in Bahrain. Participating in a fashion week was a good idea to push myself into the public eye. I knew as a young designer, participating in the FWPM would be challenging, but it was possible with hard work, perseverance and a strong portfolio.
How did you feel about winning? What does this achievement mean to your career?
I felt the appreciation, and it gave me the motivation to continue with my career. Winning one of the awards of the runway competition is definitely my greatest achievement as a designer. I believe it is the goal of every up-andcoming fashion designer to be recognised for their work on such a platform.
How did FWPM change your career?
It helped me to be exposed to more people and gain experience. Participating in the fashion show allowed me to network with models and learn with other designers. It helped to build my character and strengthened my confidence. It also improved my posture as well as my attitude – I now know I can do anything, if I put my mind to it.
What can we expect from your capsule collection that will be showcased in this year’s edition? What was your inspiration for it?
I am focusing on keeping my own touch, and it is an inspiration from fashion history, painting, sculpture and architecture. Finding inspiration is probably the most important part of designing clothes and carefully choosing a group of clothes and accessories that all fit together.

Heading to Baharat at Le Méridien City Centre Bahrain for the relaunch of The Sweetest Brunch, Liz O’Reilly encountered 180 different desserts – yes, they were counted!
Baharat, on the ground floor of the hotel, is a welcoming and cosy space, even though it has a large seating capacity. Specifically targeted lighting gives a feeling of intimacy and the décor provides points of interest while your nostrils can’t help but be assaulted by a range of delicious cooking aromas preparing your taste buds for what’s to come.
As you walk in, you’re greeted by that amazing dessert station and, I have to admit, it’s kind of hard to concentrate on anything else when your eyes are drawn to the veritable cornucopia on offer.
But, of course, much as I would’ve liked to just tuck into cake after cake and crêpes and crème brûlée… I was there to check out the brunch, so I took myself for a wander around the other yumminess on offer, while listening to the smooth jazz tunes.
Aside from a pizza counter with its own oven emitting the delicious scents of melting cheese and complementary herbs, there was a pasta station with several different styles of dough and accompanying sauces, all of which could be cooked to your personal preference.
A grill station boasted an impressive display of flames licking around skewers of tender, marinated steak and chicken and, at a taco station, chefs used hot plates to prepare soft fluffy taco shells which they then filled with various meats and a huge range of fillings including salads and cheeses. And of course there were roasts. Tender chickens, their skins delicately golden brown, sat alongside a whole flank of succulent beef, its juices running freely promising delicious meaty flavour.
My dining companion and myself first headed to the impressive appetiser section boasting everything from fresh salads to sushi and a wide range of seafood from clams and mussels to crabs and lobster tails.
I filled my plate with a delicious selection of roasted veggies – I’m particularly fond of eggplant and there were a couple of varieties to try which made me happy. A pot of muhammara provided the perfect accompaniment, its rich and flavourful mix of roasted red peppers and walnuts adding a welcoming bite to the creamy eggplant. I added a small pot of cubed, spiced potatoes – mild but tasty and perfectly cooked so as not to be mushy. I also had a fish terrine, the delicate flavour of which set me up for the next course. And, of course, I couldn’t miss a spoonful of creamy moutabel.
My friend was very impressed with the seafood selection finding the prawns fluffy and juicy and all the shellfish fresh and very tasty. She went silent when dealing with the meaty crab legs – always a good sign. At this point I must mention the bread section – the focaccia could very easily have been my undoing. I took a small, perfectly fluffy roundel to dip in the moutabel and muhammara and it was so good that I could have just kept going back for more, not to mention all the other bread options available from Arabic flats to crunchy sourdough and everything in between. However, the thought of that dessert station made me curb my appetite.
Moving on to the mains, we headed for the chafing dishes. Yes, aside from all the live cooking stations and a section serving roast beef and chicken with all the trimmings, there was also a selection of ready dishes to try. I went for the seafood red Thai curry, which was aromatic and flavourful, its creamy, rich gravy providing the perfect foil to a serving of crunchy vegetables – the courgettes, carrots and cauliflower were crisp and fresh and I used them as an alternative to rice with that dessert station in mind.
I also tried the lamb tagine – the slow cooking of the rich, slightly fatty meat providing a base for a delicious flavourful sauce.
My friend chose moussaka and pronounced the creamy béchamel sauce coating the eggplant absolutely perfect. She also tried the Kung Pao chicken – a tasty blend of salty, sweet and spicy which was a real winner. Afterwards, she decided to visit the extensive cheese counter – lots of options, smooth and creamy, soft and smelly, hard and tart – while I headed for the roasts and filled my plate with tender roast chicken, Yorkshire pudding, gravy and yummy roast beetroot, another of my alltime favourites.
Then, after a short digestive break, it was what we’d both been waiting for. Time to tackle that amazing dessert station.
With 180 different varieties we really were spoilt for choice and I found it hard to pick. From bowls brimming with juicy fresh fruit and marshmallows at the chocolate fountain to a dedicated crêpe station – I felt like a kid in a sweet shop!
I was very tempted by the mini mango pavlovas which were topped with raspberries and just looked like a happy smile, while trays and trays of brightly coloured macarons also called my name. Fruit tarts, their abundant toppings glistening, looked amazing while mini gateaux in strawberry, mango and Black Forest flavours were hugely popular. Among the other things I recognised were various styles of cheesecake and lush looking eclairs but there were also loads of options I couldn’t put a name too, served in glasses, plates and pots and each one looking more captivating than the last. And, wherever we looked, there were character cakes from superheroes to minions and even one made to resemble shoes – all can be ordered for your own special occasion.
I eventually decided on a simple crêpe topped with rich, creamy strawberry ice cream. My dining companion went for the same but hers came liberally coated in chocolate sauce. The crêpe station even features bowls where you can add your own toppings and we helped ourselves with glee to nuts and sweeties galore.
I also tried a crème brûlée – always my ‘go to’ if it’s available and one of my own personal barometers as to the quality of the kitchen. Needless to say, it, like the rest of brunch, was everything I hoped and, with a topping of red fruits, was one of my favourite dishes of the day.
I could go on at great length about The Sweetest Brunch at Baharat but my mouth is watering as I write and I’m sure yours must be too. So, I’d urge you to try it for yourself and make sure to go hungry, ready for an amazing feast, you won’t be disappointed.

It's no secret that Mercedes-Benz has been actively expanding its EQ range, recently adding its first all-electric premium SUV to its ever-growing list of battery-powered creations. Thanks to the team at Al Haddad Motors, OHLALA recently had the opportunity to test drive this new high-end model.
The first time we laid eyes on the 2023 EQS SUV, we were struck by its highly innovative design. Emphasis has been placed on functionality and aerodynamics, combined with avant-garde aesthetics. We felt the result to be an unmistakably purposeful design reflected by its dynamic proportions, generously modelled surfaces, reduced joints and seamless transitions. The first element to demand our attention at the front end was the Black Panel unit. This combination of several front features, including the digital lights, is connected by a light band and the deep black radiator grille that come together to form the face.
From side on, the aerodynamic efficiency of the exterior design became even more apparent. Gently tracing our hands along the surface, we appreciated the round front end that flows dynamically over the steeply raked A-pillar and the roof contour to the rear spoiler. We recognised
how the C-pillar's far back positioning accentuated the generous interior and admired the three-dimensional chrome strip framing the side window surfaces.
Shifting our focus to the back end, we were impressed at how seamlessly the tailgate merges into the bumper, along with the elaborately designed interior of the LED lights. The elements of the taillights have the shape of a curved 3D helix and, combined with the light band, result in an unmistakable light signature.
Tearing our collective attention away from the captivating nature of the exterior, we slipped into the cabin to be greeted by an equally stunning interior. Initially grabbing our attention was the luxurious nature of the SUV, in part due to the premium materials used throughout. Equally as impressive to us was the abundance of space on offer. Due to its generous dimensions, the EQS provides ample head, shoulder, elbow and leg room in both the front and rear with seating for up to five occupants to travel in ultimate comfort. We were informed that among the numerous optional extras available for the EQS SUV is a third-seat row, with two additional individual seats that fold up from the load floor.
"Emphasis has been placed on functionality and aerodynamics, combined with avant-garde aesthetics."
Additionally, the sizeable luggage compartment offers 645 litres of storage space, a capacity increased to 880 litres with the electronically adjustable second row moved forward and 2,100 litres with the rear seating folded flat.
The EQS SUV houses the second-generation Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX). This system, with its adaptive software, sports a zero-layer design, meaning it wasn't necessary for us to scroll through submenus or give voice commands. Depending on the immediate situation, applications were offered on the top level in the field of view, thereby relieving us of numerous operating steps.
We also must mention the premium infotainment system imbued with artificial intelligence (AI), capable of delivering context-sensitive awareness. We found this intuitive system easy to operate via the upgraded 'Hey Mercedes' voice assistant.
Although we appreciated many internal features, including the Dolby Atmos immersive sound system and the optional Head-Up Display, the MBUX Hyperscreen was hands down our favourite internal component of the EQS.
This expansive and curved unit looks like something out of a spaceship, stretching almost from A-pillar to A-pillar. It consists of three displays merging almost seamlessly into one another to create an impressive screen band over 141cm wide. We discovered this feature offers intuitive touch operation with haptic and force feedback.
Despite the wide-ranging functionality of this AI-driven feature, it was its ability to change the inner mood of the car that impressed us the most. There are several moods to select from, all offering an immersive experience. For example, when selecting the forest setting, all inner lighting of the vehicle changed to green and the sound system played woodland noises – a truly phenomenal feature.
Our all-wheel-drive EQS 450 4Matic was equipped with the standard electric drive train on the rear axle plus one on the front, with the Torque Shift function intelligently and continuously distributing the drive torque between the two. Both electric motors are permanently excited synchronous motors (PSM), receiving energy from a lithium-ion, 108.4kWh battery that delivers a range of up to 500km when fully charged. We found this setup to provide a responsive and smooth experience, with the artificial engine sounds proving to be almost as good as the real thing. This surprisingly potent powertrain has a max power output of 265kW and produces 800Nm of torque. After being pressed back into our seats, we advise all would-be EQS owners not to push the accelerator too hard! This SUV is scarily fast. It does, however, come with adaptive air suspension, a remarkable braking system and no less than five driving modes to ensure a comfortable and safe driving experience in all conditions. Furthermore, Mercedes-Benz's inclusion of a full-suite of driver assistance features meant we travelled with absolute peace of mind.

A busy schedule and insufficient time in a day is something that lots of us deal with on a daily basis. You might be a stay-at-home mum with lots of chores on your hands (and probably carrying the frustration of not building your career at the moment), or you can work many hours in a day and you might feel that there is never time for yourself. However, the burden of taking time for yourself is also real. It seems like another item to be added to your already long to-do list. To make you feel better about this ‘task’, we discovered that there are many hidden moments where it happens and easy to embrace opportunities to create ‘me time’ without putting in much effort:
● Pamper Yourself! Do you know that hairdresser appointment to fix your roots so you look polished for that important meeting? Extend it and enjoy a 30-minute massage. It won’t add much extra time and still significantly impacts your well-being.
● Say Yes! Accept more last-minute invites from friends. It is very tempting to stay in the comfort of your home after a
long day or week. However, seeing friends for an impromptu get-together will improve your mental health and reduce stress.
● Say No! Don’t be afraid to say no to things you don’t like; this will free up some time to do what you really enjoy. Don’t like going to a particular restaurant? Say no next time an invite comes. It is relevant to say that this is, unfortunately, not applicable to job-related matters.
● Do Nothing! We know this can be a controversial topic as many experts disagree with this attitude, but take one hour of your day and do absolutely nothing. You can scroll through social media channels, play with your pet, watch a mindless TV show or even just contemplate the void. The time is yours; don’t worry about judgements on what you do with it, and most importantly, no guilt!
Can you think of other non-cliche, easy ways to improve overall well-being? Tell us more about it by emailing us at editor@ohlala-magazine.com
We want to hear you!
