A British-Qatari Pride Katy Gillett Editor katy@factlive.com SO we made it to 2013 without spontaneously combusting and I, for one, am rather chuffed. Especially as, being British, we’re welcoming the start of a fantastic initiative they like to call QatarUK 2013 (see page 8 for more). It’ll certainly be great to see all the projects and events going on in my first and second homes. Particularly after seeing how successful Qatar-Japan 2012 was! It’s always an interesting question to ponder – what it is to be a Brit. Is it to sip on English Breakfast tea and eat fish and chips? Is it to binge drink and work up a belly bulge (Hey! I’m British! I’m allowed to say that… aren’t I?)? No, no. To me, one of the defining features of Britain is its humour. It’s dry, sarcastic and witty and, to be honest, it is the foundations on which FACT was built - with a tongue in the founder’s cheek. I can’t say I’ve ever been particularly patriotic, having grown up overseas, but as soon as I stick on a Fawlty Towers or Only Fools and Horses, I get that rush of pride that only comes with a good Del Boy gag (and then unfortunately begin to think the humour is innate which is always a mistake!).
Yet now I’ve adopted a new home, I’ve also inherited a different kind of patriotism and pride. It rears its head when I meet someone who knows nothing of Qatar and it comes on particularly strong when a person utters something negative. It hasn’t got anything to do with humour, but more with creativity and innovation. Perfectly fitting with this whole year dedicated to cultural and artistic endeavours between the two nations then. Well, as we await to hear what interesting projects they have lined up for us, there are certainly more reasons to be excited this month. Flip to page 23 where we find out more about to all the amazing sporting events going on. And, if that’s not enough, then I would suggest you get out your camping gear and venture out of Doha for a weekend. I certainly will be and I’ll be using our trusty gadget guide on page 42 to steer me in the right direction (hint, hint). Also find out how to get that new look you were pondering about all through 2012 (page 56) and pick up tips on actually sticking to those New Year’s resolutions (page 18) in Doha this year!

ith many a Brit on the FACT Qatar team, we like to think of ourselves as a by-product of this budding relationship (we WILL keep telling ourselves that!). But, of course, we’re not the only ones. There are plenty of British folk to be found in Qatar and we know Qataris to be fond of the UK, so this new initiative makes perfect sense. Qatar-UK 2013 is said to have been inspired by Qatar’s National Vision for 2030 and aims to develop partnerships between the countries in sectors such as education, sport, the creative industries and science, all while promoting each other’s cultures, achievements and heritage. In other words, there will be events a-plenty to enjoy here and in the UK (if you’re around). Things have already kicked off in Qatar with

the opening of the fantastic Encounter: The Royal Academy in the Middle East exhibition at Katara Cultural Village (galleries 19 and 22), which will run until March. This is an epic and incredibly diverse exhibit, featuring 100 works by 25 Royal Academicians shown alongside 25 prominent artists from across the Middle East. It certainly gets the ‘must-visit’ stamp of approval from FACT Qatar. Other events that are expected to run this year in Qatar include a programme of cutting edge works by Sadler’s Wells (UK’s leading dance house) Associate Artists at Katara and an exhibition of Damien Hirst works curated by Francesco Bonami at ALRIWAQ DOHA Exhibition Space in October. The ‘festival’ will also celebrate a partnership and three-year programme between the British Library and Qatar Foundation, which aims to transform the public’s understanding of Middle Eastern history. This initiative will take place in co-operation with the new Qatar National Library, which is expected to open in 2014, and UCL Qatar (part of the University of Central London), the first British university in Qatar to offer postgraduate degree programmes. On top of all this, a series of curatorial tours, residencies and
exchanges will take place and other events will be announced throughout the year, so we’ll keep you posted online or in our magazines. HE Sheikha Al Mayassa Bint Hamad Bin Khalifa AlThani, chairperson of Qatar Museums Authority said in the announcement last year, “We are proud of the success achieved with our international cultural exchanges, which began with Qatar Japan in 2012. We hope next year will give us the opportunity to further promote cultural dialogue and programmes that build bridges between nations.” Arts at the British Council, said, “Sharing innovative ideas and practices from both countries, building new audiences for the arts, and developing creative talent across society are at the heart of Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture.” FACT QATAR JANUARY

barely remember this time last year. Not because I don’t want to but I seem to have lost my short-term memory in the space of 12 months. I am putting it down to being a year older, wiser (Pah, who am I kidding?!) and exhausted from work and life itself. Last year I set myself no resolutions because I knew, deep down, there wasn’t a hope in hell that I would stick to them. The beginning of the year started well, where I was healthy for a few months and consequently felt all the better for it! August onwards was a downward spiral of

eating horrendously and being completely and utterly broke. There is one thing I will say this time round: 2013 will be a cheap year! All this nonsense about moving to the Middle East and being able to save because it’s tax-free… ignore it. After being back in the UK at Christmas, where you can’t even go to the bathroom in London without spending QR1, my ten day trip was far more expensive than I ever anticipated, even though everyone received Zara hugs and recycled cards as their presents. Yes, from now onwards I will be living cheaply. Bring on the ladies’
nights; bring on the free tickets; bring on living off soup and air. hermit. Call me boring, call me a grandma, but there comes a time when the term ‘savings’ should really put into practice. No more impromptu nights of spending QR1,000 because it has just been payday; No more having a ‘quick look’ around City Centre and leaving with bags full of clothes I will never wear; and no more regular post-work drinks at Trader Vic’s (damn, I am really going to miss those cocktails!). Cheers to the New Year everyone!
HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN QATAR?
Five years. It started when I came to study at Virginia Commonwealth University – Qatar. They helped me a lot with fees so I decided to come since it’s a good university and it’s a good country to live in.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT LIVING HERE?
I love my job. I love to design. I love art. My job is my passion. Whatever I work as I love what I do. It’s not where; it’s how I do it. I really enjoy it – it’s not about money. I can communicate with someone in a different way, indirectly and creatively, without having to tell someone to his or her face. I
like how this can affect people. You use feelings to affect someone and in this way he can change his mind and think about it more. AND LEAST?
It’s a bit too corporate. I can’t see people walking in the street, as they’re always in a car. It’s too white and there is no sense of community outside in the street. WHAT DO YOU DO TO SWITCH OFF AND RELAX?
I go swimming sometimes or I go to the gym at Qatar Foundation, Student Centre.

Extending this message of unity are the 101 member musicians, who were chosen in international auditions from 30 countries. director of the Philharmonic was Nader Abbassi, who was then succeeded in 2011 by Greek conductor Michalis Economou who continues to lead the orchestra to this day. This year, however, in September, the Philharmonic will welcome their brand new music director – South Korean cellist Han-Na Chang. She has already conducted the orchestra here in Qatar for two programmes last year, including the world premiere of Houtaf Khoury’s ‘Angel of Light’ piano concerto. At the announcement of her appointment, Han-Na said, “I am extremely excited… This orchestra is unique in the way it was formed, from high-level simultaneous auditions in major musical capitals. It was born an elite orchestra.” She continued, “Qatar Philharmonic is not only an orchestra for Qatar. With players from 30 different countries, it’s an orchestra of the world and for the world, as different parts of this world are interconnected and interwoven more than ever before. Breathe Lighter FRANKLY, it’s time to quit smoking. To be fair, this should be on the top of everyone’s list all year round, but New Year does make for a perfect excuse. We know it’s easier said than done, but once you make that decision, it is truly not as hard as you thought! The toughest bit is breaking the habit and so it is a good idea to change up your routine by, for example, sitting somewhere you don’t usually smoke or taking up a new hobby that will keep you busy in free hours. Editor Katy
Gillett has managed to kick it twice and she took up knitting to keep her distracted (“It didn’t last long but it did the trick!” she says). If you’re not up for doing this ‘cold turkey’, as they say, there is aid at hand. You could invest in some patches or gum, or head over to the anti-smoking clinic at Al Gharaffa Health Centre (4417 4411), which is open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for anyone with a HMC health card.
Donate Your Time WHAT better way to feed the soul and develop your character than by giving causes aplenty to get involved with in Qatar. One that is fresh in everyone’s mind after November’s COP18 conference is, of course, being green. You can do this without actually joining a group (see our previous article about being eco-friendly on www.fact-magazine.com/qa) or you could get involved with Sustainable Qatar (www.sustainableqatar.com), OR keep up-to-date with the Friends of the Environment Centre (4487 4731). If animals are more your thing, then there are numerous fantastic groups helping our domestic friends around the country. One of our favourites is 2nd Chance Rescue Qatar who have a farm for cats and dogs and accept volunteers year-round (call Katharine Body on 6644 1087). NOTEWORTHY Get Some Mad Skills WE mean expand your talent repertoire by learning something new. A language, perhaps? Arabic should be a priority for all expats, and for this you can head to the Fanar Islamic Cultural Centre (www.fanar.gov.qa). But, there are plenty of other tongues to be mastered so check out what classes are available at Berlitz (4455 0506) or Inception Language Centre (4412 6660) – to name a few. You could also learn traditional Arabic calligraphy in lessons at the Museum of Islamic Art (4422 4488). But maybe arts is more your thing. There are so many activities to choose from, such as learning an instrument, check out page 78). Or, if you head to Katara Cultural Village and enjoy one of the many art exhibitions, you could check out Katara Art Studios (bldg 19) where they offer workshops for a minimal deposit. If you like to cook, on the other hand, amazing chefs around the country offer cooking classes and tasting sessions. To name just a couple, for instance, Chef Ricardo over at Porcini in the Ritz-Carlton Doha (4484 8000) often conducts some with a sumptuous meal to follow (see Hotel Spotlight on page 71 for dates). At Carluccio’s (4495 3876 ext 3541), too, seasonal children’s cooking classes are offered throughout the year. Of course, you could also take the outdoor-sy route and pick page 74)! Go horseriding, play golf, learn to parasail or even available to you in Qatar, so what are you waiting for?
Tighten the Purse Strings EASIER said than done in up-and-coming, pricey Qatar, but we promise it is doable! First of all, instead of going out and schmoozing all the time, why not have more soirees at home? Get a BBQ roaring and some music blasting, and you have a good weekend night on your hands that doesn’t need to cost a week’s wage! Of course, one way to save lots of pennies is to stop eating out at lunch. Make it the night before and pack it up for tomorrow’s al-desko session. But, don’t let it be the end of your social life! There are many reasonably priced restaurants and bars to visit. For a cheap and cheerful dinner one of our favourites is Thai Snacks (Al Nasr Street, 4432 9704) with its cosy terrace and delicious authentic fare. A whole meal for two here comes to around QR50-200. Another good eatery is Star of India (Al Khalifa Street, 4486 3708) where the very reasonable QR46 all-you-can-eat buffet is great. Our favourite spots for a reasonable night out are Trader Vic’s bar at Hilton Doha (4423 3333) and Misturado at Crowne Plaza Doha (4408 7777). Don’t forget all the Happy Hours throughout all the bars in the country either. Check our listings on page 73 for more.

Nowadays, the tournament has come a long way. ExxonMobil jumped on board in 1995, and for 19 years it has been known as the Qatar ExxonMobil Open, and since become the highest prize money event of the ATP World Tour’s 250 Series events. We have had incredible names come through Doha including legends like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Younes El Aynaoui, Boris Becker, Martina Hingis, Maria Sharapova and Monica Seles. Having major professional events has created more interest on the recreational level as well. The goal of the Qatar Tennis Federation is to boost tennis participation at all levels throughout the country. The more interest we have, the more people we have playing, and hopefully, the ultimate aim is to produce top notch Qatari players to represent the country on the international stage.

We have some incredible young players who represent Qatar on the international stage and have had successful results in tournaments around the world – including the most recent Davis Cup zonal tie that was held here in Doha in April 2012. Our players train here in Qatar with the National Team as well as study at top tennis academies throughout the world to gain international exposure and competitive play. I think, as these young players continue to develop both here and overseas, we will soon have a international stage. WHEN DID YOUR INTEREST IN TENNIS BEGIN AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO YOU?
My interest in tennis began as a child in Morocco. I always loved sport and tennis happened to be what I really developed in. Tennis provided me with great opportunities throughout my life – from childhood through to being an adult. I have travelled the world, visited amazing places and met various people. Tennis has taught me a great deal about discipline and hard work. GO: The Qatar ExxonMobil Open runs until 5th January. Tickets are on sale at www. qatartennis.org and at the following locations: City Center, Lagoona, Landmark and the Khalifa International Tennis & Squash Complex.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR MOTOR RACING CAREER SO FAR?
Winning the SR3 Championship in the Radical Cup, Dubai. Claiming my
Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge was also a high point. WHERE DOES YOUR LOVE OF DRIVING COME FROM? WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
My passion for racing has been with me since a very young age. Watching legendary drivers such as Michael Schumacher made me want to emulate them. I want to be able to compete at the highest level and win as many championships as possible. WHO IS YOUR RACING IDOL? WHY?
Ayrton Senna. His mentality in racing was second to none. He was as cool as a cucumber and nothing fazed him, even when he was under extreme pressure. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE TRACK TO RACE ON SO FAR AND WHY?
The Automotodrom Slovakia Ring in Slovakia. I have participated in two races at the venue and won both of them in the Eastern Europe Porsche Cup Challenge. It is an amazing circuit for up-andcoming drivers to hone their skills and learn the technical aspects of racing. I also made my Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East at the Losail International Circuit, on home territory. It was an amazing experience racing in front of my home crowd. I hope federations in the region bring more championships to the circuit and put Qatar motor racing on the map. MOST YOUNG BOYS DREAM OF DRIVING IN F1, BUT YOUR DREAM IS TO RACE A PORSCHE AT LE MANS. WHY IS THIS?
Time has never been on my side to become a F1 driver. F1 drivers start

from the age of six in go-karting and accelerate through the various stages to reach F1 in their teens. I started racing when I was 19 so therefore I was far too late to set my target of becoming a F1 driver. Therefore I have had to re-adjust my ambitions. 24 Hours of Le Mans is one of the toughest races in world. It tests every aspect of a driver, from mental to physical, your technique and your endurance. It is the Grand Prix of emulate the most successful Le Mans driver, Denmark’s Tom Kristensen, who has won the event eight times – a phenomenal achievement! My participation in the 24 Hours of Qatari driver to participate in the event. I want to make history and also pave the way for future Qataris and show them what is possible in the sport. WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN FIVE YEARS?
Racing in GT Endurance races around the world; the 24 Hours of Le Mans and also the 24 Hours of Daytona. WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU OFFER BUDDING DRIVERS?
Take the risk and go for it. Follow your dreams and ambitions; it will take you places. Racing Federations in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) need to help up-and-coming drivers with improved facilities and also funding. They need to be lured into the sport and help it grow in the region. The ambition of the GCC should be to get a Middle Eastern driver into F1. That should be the target. I am not only racing for myself but also for Qatar. There are not many up-and-coming drivers and I want to be a role model for these youngsters, someone who they can emulate. There are no barriers. It is all down to an individual’s ambition.

Organised by the Qatar Golf Association (QGA), the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC), Doha Golf Club and Commercial Bank of Qatar, the event sits at the heart of the European Tour’s three-week Middle East swing. Although all of who will play at the event had not been announced at the time of writing, we do know that among the stars, will be Ryder Cup hero and defending champion of the Qatar title, Paul Lawrie, and opposing Ryder Cup player Jason Dufner. Paul, who will head to Doha after competing in European Tour events in Durban, South Africa and Abu Dhabi, UAE, said, “The Qatar Masters is a tournament I enjoy, where I’ve not only won twice but had a event of 2013 so I should be game sharp, more than I would be if it was Commenting on whether he would win again, he said, “I look forward to going back, but there are very few people who go to tournaments and successfully defend. Obviously you go there with good feelings, but sometimes that holds you back a wee bit, and makes it harder to win again.” Scotsman Paul relishes the winter conditions in Qatar as they combine with Peter Harradine’s all-grass design at Doha Golf Club to resemble the golf he’s used to playing in Scotland, where he turned pro in 1986 as a 17-year-old before joining The European Tour in 1992. “I just like playing in Doha. It’s ‘linksy’, it’s windy, you’ve got to knock the ball down, you’ve got to think a wee bit more. It’s not just stand up and give it a ‘batter’,” he said. “I enjoy it that way. You’ve got to play the ball, shape the ball a bit, which is unusual these days. You don’t have to do that very often, but Qatar’s

got that. It’s always breezy, but even though it’s windy, scoring’s always good because there are chances and you’ve got to keep the ball down.” Competitor Jason Dufner said, “I feel fortunate to have the global playing opportunities that I do and relish the chance to showcase my abilities at such a marquee event as the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters. look forward to competing against the world’s best on the very challenging layout at Doha Golf Club. “I have been asked a lot lately about my pre-shot waggle, and I can’t wait to give the in-person look at the waggle!” And we can’t wait to see it!

f she hadn’t been an artist, Mariana Heilmann would have been a scientist. “I watch endless scientific documentaries ranging from how the world and the universe evolved to how the human body works,” she tells us in the middle of her latest exhibition at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Gallery – interconnections – which primarily features works made of discarded plastic. “The relationship of life from a microscopic scale to a macroscopic scale fascinates me,” Mariana explains. “My daily observations centre around how energy manifests itself through us and around us. My work is a synthesis of these observations. It is my way of finding the beautifully simple in the incredibly complex.” As she speaks, it is immediately obvious that she is very passionate about her work, as if her own energy feeds her art, or vice versa. Mariana began her artistic journey after doing a degree in 3D Design and Interior Architecture at Kingston Polytechnic in the UK. “As I matured, I needed more direct contact with materials and more freedom to explore my inner promptings without thinking about functionality,” she says. After she graduated, she started to take steps more towards art and away from design, just as she also started a family and moving around the world with them. She now has three children and has lived in countries such as Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, Pakistan, the Philippines, Holland, the US and England. In each of those places, and through all the moves, she has constantly sought These smaller pieces are made of used water bottles that Mariana collected and pinned to foam boards

out new creative classes and picked up new artistic skills and techniques to develop what she calls her “language”. Firstly, she spent ten years dedicated to ceramics but, she says, “This medium did not have the immediacy I needed and by the time I was 40, the inner language that had been evolving over the years exploded in a series of dynamic large-scale drawings. “I was faced with something that had always been there, but that I had never listened to.” As she tells us her story, she shows us a small portfolio of her life’s works, and these include photographs she has taken along the way. There are images of raindrops, microscopic cells, and even chewing gum stuck to the floor. But, through her lens you can see what she is seeing – the beauty and fascination that can be found in the infinitesimal. She carries on flicking through, and we see that every exhibition she has put together, every medium she has used, reflects her emotions and understanding of life at various points in her journey. She explains very matter-of-factly, as though each collection is a science experiment in her quest to find her creative style. “At one point, I regretted not having had a conventional art training,” she admits. “Now I
realise that not having [training] has forced me to find my deeply personal way. It has been a challenge and at times lonely. I have felt vulnerable and insecure”. This, she says, was all part of the development of her language and although it took her a while, she soon realised that certain elements were repeating themselves throughout her work – “that action of dispersion, outward radial movement and inward radial movement, the way that order always comes out of chaos”. She explains, “We live in a world of abundance and I find abundance paralysing. The less I have, the more creative I can be. I don’t need to go into an art shop and fill my studio with all sorts of art materials - the art materials are given to me on a daily basis and that’s what I work with.” We ask her if the countries in which she’s lived have particularly inspired her and she replies that there is no question of it. “Everywhere I go, I am seeing and observing, taking photographs, feeding and enriching my inner self and my visual language. There are things you can find in each country, you can’t find somewhere else, whether it’s a type of road paving, or a tree, or the light, or the local materials they use for their buildings. Wherever I go there is material to feed from.”
ARTS In Doha, she says, the collection of photos she has been gathering have been mainly of the architecture. “You know when they’re in their grey state, when the concrete is still wet and there are no windows in them, and you have this incredible sort of play between the light and the dark? I’m loving that. I’ve already compiled quite a few photographs of what I refer to as sandcastles.” She also tells us that the desert colours and traditional Khaleeji dress – the abaya and the thobe – is a “feast for me visually, every single day”. Interesting, also, as she was wearing a blue thobe, accessorised with a bright red statement necklace, when we met. “It’s also fascinating to be in a culture that I don’t know anything about, with very different customs, different values, different religion. I’m enjoying the opportunity to see it from the inside,” she says. As she sees so much artistic potential in Doha, we ask her what she thinks of the already established arts scene here. She says that while there is some great work being done by institutions such as Qatar Museums Authority, Katara and VCU, she admits, “Because everything is so spread out, it is easy to miss what Doha has to offer.
“We also have a lack of smallscale commercial galleries and artists’ studios. Without galleries and studios it is difficult for artists working locally to show themselves, interact with the community and sell their work. This is as vital for artists as it is for the community.” She goes on to tell us of a few names who are developing artists’ communities and arranging their own private exhibitions. “This is wonderful,” she says, “because in this way, a much-needed support is found for artists who would otherwise work in isolation and have no outlet.” Mariana is also supporting the community herself by leading workshops with the QMA and teaching classes at VCU. “As well as developing my own work, I hope to continue to have the opportunity to help others tap into their creative energy,” she says. “I am greatly enjoying running workshops at QMA Gallery and at VCU and find that through helping others fulfil their creative impulses, our community is enriched.” It may seem like a small contribution at this point, but just as with much of Mariana’s work, she is proving that even the most microscopic actions can have limitless effects.
What They Think: Caitlin Doherty, the exhibition and speaker curator at Virginia Commonwealth University, said: “The exhibition has been important for a very beautiful show - very different in aesthetic from our last exhibition and visually stimulating for all the visitors. But it goes beyond this too. met who was living and working here in Doha, and a year on from my arrival here, it’s wonderful to be hosting an exhibition of her work in the Gallery. She contributes hugely to the Doha art scene... We have all come into contact with Mariana in some way or other and so it is nice to be taking the time and space to celebrate her work as a practicing artist. “The fact that Mariana has worked with plastics that have been thrown away has really excited people too. They are fascinated by the way she has been able to give new life to these materials, and has been able to see in them an inherent beauty. It was timely, of course, that our exhibition coincided with Cop 18, and I think it highlighted for many the ethical decisions and discussions that artists and designers also need to consider.” ---------------------Annette Wendling-Willeke, outreach and community class coordinator at Virginia Commonwealth University, said: “Mariana’s class – Contemporary Art and end of life materials, or, shorter, Art and Discarded materials - invites the participants to appreciate the beauty in things we usually regard as not necessary anymore and throw away. Old envelopes, bags, clothes or empty plastic bottles all of a sudden become a starting point for ventures into art leading to spectacular new interpretations of the respective materials... “Participants of the present workshop looked at many different artists, who work with discarded materials (not to forget the instructor’s own wonderful work), and were project, loosened up with the next and playing with different materials and techniques in class and at home, developing their own language and enjoying a new perspective from which just about anything becomes a potential art opportunity. The physical results of the workshop range from astonishing and interesting to absolutely beautiful.” FACT QATAR JANUARY

BOSE SIE2 Headphones IF you’re out hiking or mountain biking, or something to that effect, a normal pair of headphones won’t cut it. You need headphones that won’t fall out of your ears. Well, once you’ve used one of these, you’ll wonder how you ever did without it! It’s worn on a comfy headband, shining light wherever you’re facing, leaving around for the hamburgers, etc. It’s also weatherproof, with LED lights that are both bright and not power hungry.
Casio Protrek Carbon Fibre WE’RE so when we saw this Casio Protrek with a tough resin unbreakable, we were sold! However, it does get better too, as the screen is sapphire glass crystal, making it highly resistant to scratching, as well as being solarpowered so that heavy use doesn’t drain the batteries. And by heavy use we mean having the compass, barometer/thermometer and altimeter on the go at the same time. But then, you’d only really need all that if you were climbing Everest!
Cross FR600 FOR the real hard-core campers out there who like to live it a little rough, then this is truly one handy piece of kit. This solarpowered radio recharges itself in the sun, but can also be handcranked to provide power too. It features an FM radio, alarm clock and LED torch, but probably the best thing about it is that you can also charge your phone from it! How many times would that have come in handy when you’re without a power outlet and your phone’s dying? It’s probably not one for the casual camper, but if you’re a real action-man who likes to spend days in the desert, then for this kind of price

or me, Volkswagen has always been about the Golf. Yes, I know they make other cars – the Beetle, the Touareg, the Scirocco, etc. – but if I was ever going to buy a VW, it would always be a Golf GTI. Not the R32 – it has to be the GTI. The R32 might be faster and more powerful, but having driven both around a circuit, I can tell you that the GTI is much ‘hot hatch’, and the Golf is pretty much the only hatchback that people want to buy in the Middle East. It’s therefore always been my VW of choice. That is, until now… This, ladies and gentlemen, is the VW Passat CC 4motion, the top-of-the-range model with a 3.6l V6 VR6 FSI engine putting out 295hp and 350Nm torque. It’s absolutely loaded with features, from a touchscreen infotainment and SatNav system to a DSG 6-speed gearbox and a glorious leather-clad interior. I’d never really noticed the Passat CC before – it’s rather more understated than the Golf or the Scirocco – but I was instantly won over when I went to collect it from the showroom. I love the sleek lines of the car; it does the whole ‘four-door coupe’ thing really well. It might be understated, but it’s
46
FACT QATAR JANUARY
elegant – a classic example of clean European design, and the 18-inch give it a sporty touch. However, it wasn’t the exterior that blew my mind; it was what was inside that really caught my eye. The interior is super-stylish, with all the surfaces leatherette-clad (leatherette is a very high-quality imitation leather often used instead of leather for ethical reasons) and very cool stitching on the seats giving the Passat a really sporty and premium feel. From the inside, you could easily be forgiven for thinking you were in a more highend brand like BMW or Audi. And the ventilated front seats are always a welcome touch in the blistering Gulf summers, cooling that hot leather surface and helping to ensure your back is as cool as your front when you arrive at that meeting in the mid afternoon! When seated inside the Passat CC, it feels cosy and snug, like you’re cocooned in the driver’s seat. A raised centre console with all the audio and car settings the feeling. Even in the rear, you get a comfortable sense of being ensconced in the car, with two seats. You could seat someone small in the space in the middle
with the armrest raised, but it really wasn’t designed for adults. Having said all this, the sloping chassis means that rear head and legroom is a little cramped. Most people wouldn’t notice, but anyone over 6ft would feel the pinch in a long drive. the touchscreen panel boasting the satnav, vehicle settings and infotainment system, as well as a rear-parking camera. The stereo features Bluetooth connectivity with audio streaming, so that you can wirelessly play tunes off of your smartphone if you wish. The speakers are fantastic, with deep and clear sound coming from the premium Dynaudio speakers. I particularly loved the black and tan trim of the model we drove. Finished with chrome detailing and walnut panelling, it gave off a very premium vibe that would put it up there with higher-end brands like BMW, Mercedes and Audi. This is despite the fact that VW is supposed to be a mid-range brand, but realistically, VW falls somewhere between mid-range and premium, and in my opinion closer to the premium end of the spectrum! when you drive the Passat CC. The 4motion model we drove features VW’s all-wheel-drive system, which is technology shared in various forms throughout the VW Group, from Audi to Lamborghini. The upshot is that it handles brilliantly, just as you’d expect from a top-ofthe-range VW. While the ride is smooth and comfortable, the experience is still that of a sports coupe, with massive amounts of grip and excellent poise and precision on the road. There are two different
suspension settings – comfort and sport – and the ride does become car in sport mode, but again that is what you’d expect – you’d be a little disappointed if it didn’t! The 3.6l engine in the 4motion is lively, and really shifts the car when you want it to, though thanks little road noise makes it into the passenger cabin, adding to 0-100km/h in a commendable 5.5 seconds, and go on to an electronically limited top speed of 250km/h – not bad for a family sedan! The 4motion also boasts VW’s renowned 6 speed DSG doubleclutch gearbox, which is well known for almost seamless gear changes. It’s impressive watching the rev needle drop instantaneously when the car shifts up a gear. However, it’s all let down slightly by a delay of almost a second between tapping the paddle shifter and the gear actually changing when you’re in manual mode, which is a shame. The response should be much quicker in a sports sedan of this calibre. However, as an overall experience, the VW Passat CC is overwhelmingly enjoyable. It’s hugely satisfying to drive, and a very comfortable place to be. And there are other great little touches to the Passat CC that really set it apart in its class. For example, the Auto Stop feature keeps the car stationary

get used to it, though you can also switch it off, if you want to. Then there are things that you don’t see, like the Intelligent Crash Response system which unlocks all the doors and kills power to the fuel pump in the event of an accident, improving safety, and even the Brake Disc Drying feature, which automatically dries the brake discs after you’ve driven through a puddle to improve their performance. It’s technology like this that really sets the VW apart in its class, and is the reason why it has won several safety accolades. To summarise, if I was presented with a choice between an Audi A6 and this Passat CC, I’d have to go for the Passat, and that’s saying something, because I’m a big fan of Audi. The only reason you’d spend the extra QR50,000-odd for the Audi is for the badge on the front! And let’s face it, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with a VW badge either. I’m not sure what VW are playing at, to be honest. They’re brand, because their levels of quality are way above your average sedan or hatchback. They offer features and levels of luxury that put them more up in the realm of premium brands like Mercedes and BMW, but they don’t claim to aspire to that segment. I think they’re just happy with ‘exceeding expectations’, and the Passat CC 4motion is a great example of that.

GTS is a wolf in a
O
k, ok, I know the phrase is “A wolf in sheep’s clothing”, but no-one could ever say that the Panamera is ‘sheep-like’. For starters, it’s got a Porsche badge, and there’s nothing sheepish about Porsche. However, it’s also got four doors, four seats, and plenty of room for luggage or shopping, so one could be forgiven for thinking that it’s just a friendly family sedan that can go fast when it wants to, much like the friendly family hound. And if you were talking about the Panamera V6, you’d be correct. However, this car is different – the Panamera GTS is much more predatory, hanging round at traffic lights waiting to take down other unsuspecting sports sedans. It’s not often that I’m initially indifferent to a car, but am then completely won over purely by the driving experience, but Porsche manages it time and again. They did so with the Cayenne S, and now they’ve done the same with the Panamera GTS. Don’t get me wrong – I knew it would be good, but I was just surprised by how good it was.
50
FACT QATAR JANUARY
The problem for me with the Panamera is the same one many people have, which is the shape. I’m really not a fan of the profile of the car, looking rather dumpy as it does at the back. It has to be said that there is a reason for this, though, which is to give the rear occupants more headroom. However, other fourdoor coupes have managed this without looking like they’ve put on weight. I do have to admit that I am a sucker for this car’s colour scheme, though! The angry red with the black alloys and trim just looks fantastic, almost sinister, and gives you some hint as to the wolf hidden under this four-door disguise. The Panamera GTS sits at the top of the model’s naturallyaspirated range of options, so it’s basically as high as you can go before you’re in Turbo territory. What that means is that you get a naturally-aspirated 4.8l V8 putting out 430hp and 384lb-ft of torque. And let me tell you, it is one of the best sounds I’ve ever heard come from a V8! It’s a deliciously deep and throaty growl that just makes you want to plant the
accelerator time and time again. The problem is that you don’t get to do that very often – you seldom have enough road – because the Panamera GTS is fast! And not just fast for a four-door sedan, but fast for any car! It’ll do 0-100km/h in 4.5 seconds, and 80-120km/h in just 3.2 seconds. And if you keep it floored, it’ll take you on to a top speed of 288km/h, which is almost 180 miles an hour! That puts the Panamera GTS right up there in the region of some supercars we shan’t name right now. The school run never looked like so much fun… The GTS sits a little lower on its suspension than other models, around 10mm, but can be lowered even further at the push of a button for some real hooliganism. It also boasts the Sport Plus (which I absolutely love) and Sport Chrono package. The Sport Plus is an option on lesser models but comes standard on the GTS. At the push of the button, the personality of the car changes completely, turning it from a well-behaved daily drive into a snarling, growling racing

machine, with higher revving gear ratios, a quicker throttle response and firmer suspension. It is SO much fun you’ll be tempted to leave it in that mode all the time… Until, that is, you hit the first pothole, or find yourself refuelling it twice a day! And the phenomenal thing is that, despite its racing aspirations, the GTS will get an impressive 23mpg on the highway at normal cruising speeds, which is incredible for an engine like this. Fuel efficiency is also improved by the Auto start/stop function, which subtly shuts down the engine when you brake to a halt in traffic, and starts again instantaneously when you take your foot off the brake! It happens so seamlessly that you’ll barely even notice it, though you can switch it off at the touch of a button if you wish. So what you get with the Panamera GTS is essentially a four-door supercar that disguises itself as a family sedan by day. Most people will enjoy driving it just as much as a Porsche 911, but you can carry two more adults in the back, as well as their luggage in the boot! It’s a car you can drive every day, taking the kids to school in the morning, and ferrying three colleagues to a meeting in the afternoon.
52
FACT QATAR JANUARY
However, it’s also a car you can then whisk off into the desert and spend a few hours just… driving. Just happily driving, lost in your own little Porsche-inspired reverie. It’s simply a sublime car to drive, handling with a poise and precision you wouldn’t expect from a car this size. Like the Cayenne, it defies the laws of physics, feeling as light and nimble as a much smaller vehicle, and gives you some insight into the technical wizardry by those boffins at Porsche. There aren’t many cars in the world that can give you the best of both worlds like that. I challenge any average Joe to tell me the difference between driving the Panamera GTS and a 911 Carrera 4s (there is no 911 GTS)! You’d have to drive it pretty hard to feel the difference in the cars’ lengths and weights, so good is Porsche’s engineering and suspension systems, like the Porsche Active Suspension Management and allwheel-drive system. And I absolutely love the interior of the Panamera. It envelopes you, and wraps around you like a cocoon, until you feel like you’ve become part of the car. The seats are figure hugging, and yet comfortable, holding you in place as you put the car through its

paces. The centre console is raised, giving the impression that you’re sitting even deeper in the car, with all the important buttons like the suspension settings and Sport Plus all at your fingertips. Even in the back it’s cosy and secure, with two more sports bucket seats separated by another centre console making the passengers feel almost as much a part of the experience as the driver. And it’s all so stylish and pleasing to the eye, from the carbon fibre panels on the dashboard to the red stitching on the leather and alcantara seats and even the red GTS embroidered into the headrests. If a two-door sports car is too impractical, don’t pass over the Panamera. While you might not like the shape of it (although maybe you do), once you’ve driven it you’ll love it as much as I did. It’s why Porsche have this policy of getting people into their cars. The driving experience of a Porsche is utterly fantastic, and it only gets better the higher up the range you go. With the Panamera GTS, you get range-topping specs and features for less, but you also get incredible fuel economy, and the wonderful, wonderful noise of that naturallyaspirated V8.

décor reminded us of a 1920s dining parlour, although there’s no room Chef Ricardo Acquista’s penchant for creative, lavish and even molecular cooking. We chose to start off the evening with a warm starter of crab cannelloni with salmon and citrus caviar, as well as the cooler octopus salad with blue potatoes, garlic cream, onion and cherry tomatoes. However, before this came to the table, we were surprised with a very interesting amuse bouche of salmon with tartar and mousse cheese with honey caviar, and a delicate cracker to scoop. This was a great indication of what was to come, in what can only be described as a culinary journey. Once we’d devoured the pre-bite, we moved onto the starters, and the cannelloni was absolutely delicious – While the octopus in our salad was a tad too smoky for our taste buds, we can’t nitpick too much as the dish

overall was also tasty and beautifully presented. At this point, we’d certainly noticed waiters were attentive, and took the liberty of pairing our drinks with our meals, which was a nice touch. that all-familiar feeling of neglect in a restaurant (of course, you would expect nothing less from a RitzCarlton venue!). So, once the friendly waiter whisked away our empty plates, and brushed off an embarrassing amount of crumbs and caviar (daahling!), our mains came along. We went for a tomato, pistachios and apple jelly, and a duck breast with mixed fruit, honey caviar and sweet potato puree. and cooked just right – pink on the inside and so a knife just slides right through. With a forkful of tuna and all the trimmings, in particular the caramelised onion, it was the perfect main – not too heavy but again, full tells me, that is becoming increasingly popular among the Porcini punters.
The duck was also cooked well and, combined with its sweet surroundings, it made a very interesting meal indeed. On the Porcini menu, you will also which you can then upgrade for QR30 to be a main dish. We didn’t feel brave enough to go for four courses on that evening, but there were some fantastic sounding dishes that we would certainly go back for, such as the black fettuccine with calamari, the porcini mushroom risotto with quails eggs, and the seafood pasta. Although we were almost full to bursting, we did manage to squeeze in a little dessert. For review purposes only of course… We were tempted in the end by the chocolate ravioli and tiramisu, which were both quite heavy after such a big meal already, but were well worth the effort of indulgence (sigh). The chocolate ravioli in particular was delicious, as you can taste the varying chocolate strengths that work very well together when combined. The novelty factor certainly doesn’t outweigh taste in this dish, nor any others for that matter in a restaurant
FINALLY opening its doors to the Qatar public is Magnolia Bakery, an American franchise that serves more than 120 varieties of classic American desserts including cupcakes, cakes, brownies, bars, cookies, pies, icebox desserts and their famous banana pudding. Kiran Shetty, a Magnolia chef, said, “Our cupcakes are made using only natural ingredients, without preservatives, and are made in small batches throughout the day, served fresh to our customers.” He told FACT that the menu will primarily be the same in Doha as it is in the US but, “the Doha store will cater to the local market
by introducing exciting new ingredients such as dates and saffron to their products.” He added that the team will also be introducing a savoury menu in Doha, featuring salads, sandwiches and small plates. Overall, he says, “ We offer our customers a mouthwatering experience – they smell our freshly baked goods coming straight out of the oven and see our cakes and cupcakes being iced and decorated by hand. Magnolia is not just about the baked goods – it’s a full sensory experience.” Don’t mind if we do!
A new casual dining spot is offering punters Qatar’s biggest pizza. Red, at the Governor West Bay Hotel, is offers an outdoor shisha terrace. The hotel’s general manager, Rene Vincent-Ernst, commented on their show-stopping pizza, saying, “The new 63” pizza is the highlight of the restaurant. understatement when it comes to describing its size.” He says it can be customised to a guest’s tastes and comes with an assortment of toppings including vegetarian, Aside from pizzas, Red’s menu includes Indian food cooked in a Tandoor oven, American-style burgers including one made with camel meat, and a range of Arabic food. Each of the four cuisines has a dedicated cooking station in the spacious restaurant, giving families plenty of option. So, head over, for a relaxed atmosphere with a fantastic West Bay view, and a range of food for a reasonable price. And, if you do order the pizza, take note and report back to us… We’ll certainly applaud you if you

estled away in a corner of the Grand Hyatt Doha is Majlis, their newest eatery. Not quite a restaurant, but not quite a coffee shop, Majlis is, as its name implies, a place to go and sit with your friends, and socialise over delicious cold and hot mezze, snacks, shisha and drinks. We meet Chef Jamal one morning as he prepares for the lunchtime service. Originally from Damascus, Syria, Chef Jamal has been working in the kitchen for more than 15 years. He started his career in his home country and has since moved to work for numerous prestigious hotels such as the Four Seasons Riyadh and the Fairmont Makkah Clock Royal Tower. He initially came to Doha in 2010 to work as an oriental chef at Fauchon Paris, before being appointed as Chef de Cuisine at the Grand Hyatt Doha. Chef Jamal tells us that although he has never specialised in cooking any one cuisine, his favourites are Arabic and Italian and he tabouleh. As Majlis focuses on fare from around the Arab World, it certainly suits his tastes and so he tells us more about the concept. “We prepare assorted Arabic mezze - hummous, mutable, tabbouleh, fattoush – around 25 kinds of mezze from Middle East,” he tells us. “We prepare also hot food like shawarma and falafel, mixed grill, quail, chicken liver and lamb liver.” The inspirations for the dishes come from all around the Arab World, as do the six chefs working under him. “From Egypt, from Syria, from Morocco, from Lebanon. From Morocco [for

instance] we have harira soup and tangine. [We have] many different dishes,” he says. Most importantly, he says, is that they get all of their ingredients from Qatar, which is unusual for a restaurant here in Doha. “We have good products here in Doha,” he spices, and they’re very nice.” He tells us he scours the various markets of Doha for his products – vegetables, spices, chicken and meat. We had previously had the chance to try the assorted mezze selections on the restaurant’s opening night and we were suitably impressed, especially by the hummous and mutable. Chef Jamal tells us, this is one of the customer’s favourite choices and they especially rave about the hummous. Another of the punters’ favourites is the grilled shawarma, which he makes up for us the morning we meet him. This is large but delicious, with garnishes such as pickles, garlic sauce and salad on the side, and with tomatoes and onions wrapped up with the perfectly cooked chicken He also makes up a lamb makanek for us with Lebanese sausages sautéed in lemon juice, onion, green capsicum and tomato paste. Again the dish is large but beautifully presented with a lemon
wrapped up in cloth and placed on the side (we love the little touches!). The sauce, in particular, was more-ish and we couldn’t stop dipping bread in and eating, even once we’d had enough. Although the menu is already quite sizeable and they have interesting additions such as whole quail, and, we are told, Majlis is one of the only restaurants in Doha to serve this, Chef Jamal tells us he still plans to expand the menu. He says he wants it to become more of a restaurant and he will soon start to prepare a buffet as well. Overall, we were impressed by Majlis. The décor is modern and the space is airy but it still maintains that authentic Arabian ambience. We like that there is a terrace where you can sit and smoke shisha while sipping on a drink and looking out onto the beautifully manicured gardens of the Grand Hyatt. And we particularly like the small touches they have added, in terms of design and service. For example, there are exclusive lockers for Majlis regulars where they can keep their own shisha pipe (whether it is the hotel’s or their actual own) and when they arrive the staff know exactly what they want. As we have often said before, it’s the little things that count!

BEFORE embarking on a journey to India in search of spices and gold, which ultimately culminated in the legendary discovery of America, the renowned traveler, Christopher Colombus said “But in truth, should I meet with gold or spices in great quantity, I shall remain there till I collect as much as possible, and for this purpose I am proceeding solely in quest of them.” It is these amazing legends of spice trade, it is said in the announcement of the restaurant opening, that inspired the Spice Boat, a multi-cuisine destination. Indian actor siblings, Indrajith and Prithviraj, are launching the restaurant, which will open on the 11th of this month. They are the children of the late film actor Sukumaran and leading Malayam actress Mallika Sukumaran. It will be located on the ground level of the Al Maha Twin Towers in West Bay and will be quite a spacious venue, able to accommodate 70 guests indoors and another 120 in an open-air dining section. The cuisines that will be covered on the menu are Indian, Arab, Mediterranean, Mexican and Chinese. At the press conference, Mallika said, “The opening of Spice Boat is now a dream come true for us.”

a car obstacle course, gymnastic performances, sporting relays and, of course, a classic car show (drool, says Ali!). We heard through the grapevine that the 2012 Qatar Motor Show saw a whopping 120,000 people walk through its doors overall. You can only imagine, as the show gets bigger and better every year, what the numbers will be like in 2013. A little birdy told us that visitors to the show should also expect a surprise or two! But we can’t tell you what…

As it seems to become somewhat of a tradition, this year’s motor show will again take place inside and just outside of the Doha Exhibition Centre, with events related to the motor show going on at the same time. La Cigale is not just a destination for those dressed to kill on a Friday night - it also boasts an impressive spa, Ozone. As soon as the spa doors open, the smell of essential oils is a warm welcome to the labyrinth of luxury within. Although there is a myriad of choice, the stand out treatment is the Hot Stone Massage. For anyone who has trouble relaxing, or has tense muscles, it really is a must. Originally used by Native Americans to soothe aching muscles, it’s a massage that has gained huge popularity in the last few years. The heat that emanates from the black volcanic stones is both deeply relaxing and also helps loosen tight muscles so the therapist can work them more deeply. It eases muscle stiffness, increases circulation and metabolism, as well as leaves you feeling fabulous. white robe and padding through to the intimate treatment room, the therapist gives the choice of three scents - vanilla, honey and orange; delicious aromatic oils that bring to mind orange groves, honeysuckle

and vanilla pods. Then comes a short Swedish massage, which wakes up the muscles and begins the wonderful relaxation process. You are then asked to lie back on a bed of the small stones (deep breaths are a must for this one - it’s rather hot back muscles. The stones are placed on energy points over the entire body, tiny stones are even slipped between your toes! After the stones do their work on the back, it’s time to turn over so the therapist can really go to town on the loose muscles. With a stone in each hand, she slides the smooth stones along the muscles, adding pressure and alleviating tension to melt away all problems. The sensation is hypnotic, cleansing and intensely healing. All in all the massage is not only deeply relaxing but also leaves your muscles feeling renewed, removes tension and it’s impossible not to feel lighter on your feet. Don’t forget to enjoy the complimentary access to the indoor pool, jacuzzi and steam room! GO: Call the hotel and be transferred to Ozone

We’re so lucky while living in Qatar to be so close to one of the world’s most exciting tourist destinations. Dubai is constantly throwing us good reasons to visit and for some, it’s a bi-weekly or at least a monthly occurrence. Well, whether you do head over to the shiny city regularly or not, do make sure to pay a visit this month at least, as one of the biggest festivals of the year is going on from the 3rd January to 3rd February… Why, it’s the Dubai Shopping Festival 2013 of course. People actually wait all year-round for this 32-day extravaganza of shopping discounts, prize giving and entertainment to come around again and this year marks its 18th edition. This year DSF will be once again projecting ‘Dubai at its Best’ as its addition to all the shopping and the many, many prizes to be won, there will be hundreds of events and activities for both residents and visitors alike. From international concerts, street performers, musicals, sports, fashion and that’s for sure. Ibrahim Saleh, Festivals Coordinator General, DEPE, said at the announcement in Qatar,

that after Dubai was crowned for the second consecutive year the World Festival and Event City by The International Festivals and Events Association (IFEA), DEPE is even more keen to provide the best services to tourists and visitors. He added that the festival will have many a surprise and promotion to offer, as well as a new gala opening.

draws for gold as well as luxury cars Ali Driver is going to be happy about that one!), and will feature unique plays and concerts by top Arab and international artists, including Slash! “What is also unique about DSF 2013 is that we will be concentrating on celebrations in the main streets of Dubai such as Al Riqqa, Al Seef, The Walk (JBR), Downtown Dubai, Promenade Festival City and the Heritage and Diving Village among others,” Ibrahim said. “There will be something special about all these heritage, culture, fashion, music and other aspects of its day-to-day life.” Let’s face it - Dubai is a shopping haven at the best of times but when there are discounts galore, afoot, there’s little else we’d rather be doing with our time. And money.

The charity run has got to be one of the best inventions as it’s good for the body, mind and soul. and you have the best excuse to do it all – for a good cause. The Six Senses Spa Charity Run, in particular, is for a great cause, as all the proceeds go to Qatar Red Crescent. There’s just no reason to not get involved is there? Taking place on January 19th at 14.30, the Six Senses Spa Charity Run (or walk, depending on your half (eight kilometres) or full (16 kilometres) route, starting at Al Dana Island in Sharq Village and circling the Corniche coastline and Sheraton Hotel. All you have to do to enter is pay QR50 minimum per person underpriveleged people overseas. The Six Senses Charity Programme has been running for the past three years and was started with the idea that the spa and hotel wanted to give back to the community. a total of QR7, 800 and this money was used to built two fully-functional wells for an entire village in Niger. say that they don’t choose worthy causes to support. Just this last November, too, there was another charity run dubbed Run for a Cause, that was launched with the purpose of raising awareness about the environment. Over 150 participants got involved and the proceeds were collected and donated to the Qatar Charity Foundation for the development of two waterholes in Bangladesh and Indonesia where communities without access to clean water reside. This time, all the proceeds will go to Qatar Red Crescent, a volunteerled humanitarian organisation that was originally founded in 1978. The society works both locally and internationally and has numerous ongoing relief and sustainable health and social development projects around the world. Most recently, QRC has been doing great work in areas of Mali and Niger in sectors such as food security, sanitation and health. Saturday afternoon and you feel like doing something good for humanity, all while doing yourself a favour in perfect opportunity. Don’t miss out!
