My favourite story this issue The Arty Souq Tour I loved researching this article in particular as I spent a fascinating couple of days just exploring the souq and finding out so much about the shop owners. There are some real characters down there so make sure you check out our piece and those shops right away!
20 down and 176 to go... Katy Gillett Editor

I
’m constantly realising that there are so many cities and countries I still need to go to internationally and regionally. There are 196 countries in the world today and I’ve only been to just over 20 of them! I’d love to go to Tokyo, Japan where I fully expect to see some seriously wacky sights. And let’s not forget the beautiful backwaters of Kerala, India that are not very far from us at all. Here, in the region, I want to go to Cairo, Egypt and witness what I hear is a thriving art market. Also Syria, when the political landscape has calmed down, as its cities are rich in culture and need to be experienced at least once! It just reminds me of that old adage – so much to do, so little time. Unfortunately it’s too easy to get wrapped up in what you’re doing here in Qatar, especially if you have a busy job, but it’s important to see what the rest of the world is up to from time to time (and I’m not talking about visiting our home countries yet again). We’re in a fantastic 4

position, too, as from here we’re not far from most of the world and with the range of airlines available to us, it can be affordable. Plus, let’s face it all you expats out there, we’re happy to fork out because at the end of the day we live for travel. Otherwise we wouldn’t be in Qatar. So, as we all start pondering how to escape the summer heat, we’ve decided to bring you our ‘Around the World in One Summer’ article (pages 28 to 36), where we take you from the west coast of America, all the way round and down to the depths of New Zealand. There’s so much to do in between that it will realistically take you a fair few seasons to get all the way through these top holiday destinations. But no matter where you go, please remember to pick up as many mad magnets, pointless printed tees and barmy bottle openers as you can because, in my opinion, one of the best things about travelling is tourist tack!
Until next time folks, happy travels.

he haunting melodies of compositions created for oud and computer by musician Karim Sultan echoed through the Katara Art Center in the first edition of Offbeat, a new series that has been launched by the KAC team to give Dohabased sound artists and musicians a platform to share their work. On the same night, the unique sounds presented by artist John Burrows in his wrecksounds project also permeated the halls. These were produced by sampling roadside objects found from scenes of car wrecks in Doha. He is exploring this for his MFA – Creative Practice at Transart Institute and, he states on his website, his mission is “to examine the culture and landscape of Doha, Qatar through the lens of the automobile accidents that are a daily sight”. The manipulation of noise and everyday sounds is an emerging contemporary art that is nothing new around the world. In 2010, Susan Philipsz won the prestigious British Turner Prize for a sound installation featuring her singing three versions of a Scottish lament. This was seen as a huge boost for the art form and further blurred the lines of how ‘art’ can be defined. In Qatar, however, it is something that has yet to be further explored. In the second edition of Offbeat The Awakenings Ensemble, which consists of three Doha-based

musicians – Mike Pignéguy, Yassine Ayari and James Beard - performed. The group, who last year also played at Doha Tribeca Film Festival and released their debut album Speak, combine jazz, Arabic and electronic influences through a range of instruments and techniques to create atmospheric, moody music. While all of the offerings aren’t as obviously avant garde as Burrows’ wrecksounds, there is an element of experimentation for each artist. Oud player Karim, who is also the Offbeat organiser and KAC communications manager, explains, “Experimentation, improvisation, and pushing the creative envelope with music is a part of contemporary art practice and is a natural extension of our growing programme. “We sought to create a space in which artists can explore their craft and original work. The Art Center provides a venue that allows a closer relationship between the performer and the audience, and enables the artist to be free of commercial considerations or the pressure of simply entertaining. Instead, artists can be free to present imaginative, forwardthinking work or performance.” The centre plans to hold the next installment of Offbeat on the 29th of this month and they are currently confirming the participants. So, if you or someone you know has a passion to perform with sound, to experiment and push the boundaries of what is defined as music, then make sure you sign up. Alternatively, if you’re just interested to see the untapped talent that lies in this city of ours, then make sure you head over and be a part of this intimate audience. n If you want to hear the sounds of Karim Sultan, John Burrows and/or The Awakenings Ensemble then check out these links:

Zara’s RANT of the Month
“Is social media making us all less social?” The lost art of a plain old conversation…
Don’t get me wrong; social media has transformed the world in more ways than we can think of. What I struggle to decide is, just how much should we let it dominate our lives? And where do you draw the boundaries?
Twitter, most probably a boring tweet from one of their two followers. One of them even updated their status that they were there with me as my phone made that awful ‘de de de ding’ noise to inform me. Hello… I know I’m here with you BECAUSE IM SAT IN FRONT OF YOU (capitals for screaming btw).
When I was in my teens, the art of writing a letter was treasured. Receiving one brought genuine tears to my eyes. Aged 13, I had my first ever Nokia 3310. Text messages, top-up credit and endless phone calls. Life was cracking.
And that’s the other thing: wtf has happnd 2 ppl’s spelling? I don’t know whether people think everything is related to the amount of Twitter characters allowed, but all these abbreviations do my nut in.
Then it all changed. I have had tonnes of phones and spent hundreds of riyals on pointless conversations but the one thing I HATE, more than anything, is what phones have turned us into: Anti-social individuals. The other day, I arranged to spend time with friends, some who I had not seen for a while (yes I know it doesn’t tend to happen in this tiny country). We got together for drinks, which we had planned on Facebook, through our phones. Not even two minutes in, one of them had picked up their phone to check their

According to new Qatar Statistics Authority Consumer Price Index figures, the cost of almost everything in the country has gone up by an average of 3.6 per cent from March 2012 to March 2013. This includes recreational activities, groceries, rent, energy, transport, furniture and much more. QSA blame tourism package prices, fresh fruits costs, as well as a rise in travel fares. It might be time for a raise, eh folks?
I use SM daily at work. It is useful, advancing and has created so many avenues for us. But, if you want to meet up for a drink, you may as well catch me over Skype, Facetime or WhatsApp with a bottle to myself cheers-ing you through the screen. At least then I won’t have to sit through watching the world and his wife updating their statuses, checking in at the gym (WHO CARES), tweeting how hungry they are or putting up their nan’s best dish on Instagram. THE DOHA MINUTE
“We will never have enough information unless we are eager for it” FACT reader and business development manager Ioana Cristina El Watidy has been living in Qatar now for three years. We wanted to know what she thinks of the place… Why did you initially come to Qatar?
I always dreamed that I would be living in a country with warm weather near the sea. My husband came here in 2003, so it was a natural choice to follow him after we got married in Romania in 2009.
Women and education. One barrier that exists to career advancement for women is stereotyping. It is a known fact that gender stereotyping exists in this part of the world. The strong linkages between the national and global economic growth and the important role of women in shaping the present and the future of Qatar is highlighted nowadays by their ability to fully participate in the workforce. Female labour participation in the region stands at just 26.9 per cent, much lower than the global average of 51.7 per cent, but it is a huge change in the last ten years. What is Doha’s best-kept secret?
It is a small place but I like to believe that it has a lot to offer if we make a little effort to discover it. Aside from those historical forts and mosques, there are also some architectural arts and designs that [have been built] just recently that are well known for their magnificent beauty and creation (Grand Mosque 12

for example). The souqs (there is more to see than Souq Waqif), the desert, the beaches, other cities; are waiting to be explored. We will never have enough information unless we are eager for it and share it with others. What do you think Doha desperately needs right now?
Doha needs more places to spend time with family and friends. It is all about the restaurants and hotels. I firmly believe that Doha can do more than that. Every neighbourhood would
need a green area/park, where people are encouraged to walk. Also, more sidewalks for the roads. People here are somehow forced to use the car, as the pedestrians are not respected and crossing the street can be an adventure. In a personal perspective, roads are for vehicles and not for people. Describe your ideal day off in Qatar...
Taking the car early Friday morning and driving to discover new places and capture the moments in photos. And of course spending time with family and friends. n

Performing in Jazz at Lincoln Center Doha this month is the Clarence Penn Quartet, led by drummer Clarence himself, who has been playing since the tender age of 15. We spoke to him to find out more about his life and playing with the highest calibre of jazz stars…
You have performed and toured with some of the biggest names in Jazz and have known Jazz at Lincoln Center’s own Wynton Marsalis for years. Excluding someone you’ve already collaborated with, is there anyone left whom you would love to perform with? I’d love to perform with Peter Gabriel. What inspired you to pick up your first-ever set of drumsticks? My neighbour who played drums. How do you feel about coming to play at Jazz at Lincoln Center Doha? I’m very excited as I haven’t been to that part of the world and to be associated with Jazz at Lincoln Center is a treat also. What do you think of the plan to establish Jazz at Lincoln Center branches in St Regis hotels all around the world? The more places for music, especially jazz in such beautiful hotels, is great. It’s important that jazz be affiliated with places like the Regis instead of dark jazz clubs.
How do you think this will impact the face of jazz music today? Positively uplifting the reputation. What is the most memorable gig you’ve had in your career so far and why? When I played in Japan in 1990 with Ellis Marsalis. That led me to getting my first big gig in New York City with Betty Carter. Have you had any disaster gigs in the past? If so, what happened? I have had the wrong kinds of people in the band... What advice would you offer a budding drummer looking to break into the modern jazz scene? Practise a lot and work on your “people” skills - you have to be likable. Always be on time and know the music. Be professional at all times! What does the future hold for jazz in your opinion? Jazz is freedom of expression. As long as people have something to say, jazz will withstand.
“It’s important that people know my versatility, sensitivity and professionalism. I’m very serious about what I do, and I want people to know that I can do the job that I’m called to do.” www.clarencepenn.com

Nico Rosberg signs the new Mercedes A Class at Bushido...
Thursday Though we didn’t actually spend any time at the track on Thursday, we had a nice introduction to the weekend by way of several car launches that took place. It all started off with the new McLaren Automotive showroom launch in the morning, where we got up close and personal with Jenson Button’s actual 2010 F1 car, the MP4-25, in which he won the Chinese and Australian Grand Prix. Then, in the evening, it was the launch of the new Mercedes A-Class, a glam event held at Bushido and attended by none other than Nico Rosberg, who signed one of the cars on display, which is now up for sale! 22

Following that, it was off to the Ritz-Carlton for a spectacular Ferrari event showcasing the new LaFerrari (which unfortunately couldn’t be there in the flesh, as there is only one working prototype in the world and it was on its way to China for the Shanghai Motorshow). This was the event to be at, as included in the assembled VIPs was none other than F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone, who we were fortunate enough to meet briefly (see pic on the left of editor-in-chief and Bernie), and Ferrari F1 drivers Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa! Quite a night, and a fantastic warm up for the weekend to come…

Friday It was the F1 practice sessions on Friday, but a special treat was in store for FACT today, as we were invited to an exclusive F1 experience courtesy of McLaren, where we were treated to a pit lane walk and a tour of the McLaren garage and team building. During the tour, we met McLaren driver Sergio Perez (see pic on the below right of Tony and Serg!), who was happy to pose for some photos and have a chat. We then retired to the Mumtalakat lounge in the Paddock Club for a delicious lunch while we watched the F1 practice sessions, which were dominated by Lotus’s Kimi Raikkonen when the final times had been posted, which was some indication of things to come. After all the adrenaline-fuelled excitement, it was off to the glamorous Hed Kandi party, which was sponsored by FACT Bahrain, so the whole team enjoyed the VIP treatment whilst enjoying the sophisticated beats of Hed Kandi’s resident DJ Sarah Louise! u

Saturday On Saturday, it was all business, as we headed down to the F1 circuit for the all-important F1 qualifying sessions that would decide who takes what place on the grid for Sunday’s race. Nico Rosberg grabbed Mercedes GP’s second back-to-back pole since 1955, after Hamilton took pole in the previous Chinese Grand Prix. This was a surprise result, as noone expected the Mercedes to be the fastest given the performance of the other cars during the practice sessions. The final results were as follows: 24

SUNday Today was the day that everything has been building up to, and it was worthy of all the hype. The Bahrain F1 GP was chock-full of close action, wheel-to-wheel racing, with plenty of overtaking, controversy and obligatory drama. Perhaps one of the most dramatic battles was that between the two McLaren team-mates, with Perez giving one of his most aggressive drives to date, much to the fury of Button, in a contest that even saw them make contact. It wasn’t until several days after that the drivers made peace! However, it was the top three that proved to be the most interesting. Predictably, Vettel had a clear lead by the last quarter of the race, but then Raikkonen slotted in behind him to hold a firm second place, with Paul Di Resta looking to take a shock podium place in third. However, much to our disbelief, we then saw Romain Grosjean, the other Lotus driver, in fourth place and steadily closing in. Could it be…? Sure enough, Grosjean caught up with Di Resta and overtook, to complete exactly the same podium as Bahrain’s race in 2012! This is only the third time in F1’s history that there has been a repeat podium in consecutive years. After a brilliant race, it was back to the vending area to catch the fantastic post-race concert featuring Ne-Yo and Calvin Harris, both of whom played to a massive audience who were going wild for both world-class performers. Then it was off to the FTV After Party at Coral Bay, where a rather exhausted team chilled to the beats of Sky Bar Beirut’s DJ Jojo, and bid farewell to yet another fantastic Gulf Air Bahrain F1 GP. It’s always a bittersweet moment when we say adios to the F1 for another season. But now we’re looking forward to Abu Dhabi’s! n

The city of angels Average Summer Temperature: 24°C
We start our journey on the West Coast of the United States, in one of the world’s most famous and exciting cities, Los Angeles, California. There is so much to see and do in this iconic destination that it’s advisable to plan your trip well to make sure you get the best out of it. L.A. has been the birthplace of so many cultural movements and fashions that it’s hard to know where to begin. It is home to the greatest part of America’s film and music industry, and is a world leader in terms of television and stage production, video games and recorded music. The only movie industry bigger than Hollywood is of course Bollywood and it was named after it (so was Dollywood but let’s not go into that…). Everywhere you go has global significance, with new movements and trends being created on an
almost daily basis. There is a constant cultural revolution and evolution, meaning that here, you’ll always have your finger on the pulse of what it is to be trendy. Aside from being America’s second most populous city after New York, Los Angeles has also been ranked as the world’s third richest city and the fifth most powerful and influential city. It is also the third largest economic centre in the world, after Tokyo and New York. GO: Emirates flies from Doha to Los Angeles International Airport via Dubai. Call 4438 4477

Things to do Get Glamorous No trip to Los Angeles would be complete without visiting the beating heart of America’s film industry. It’s perfectly normal to see world-famous Hollywood stars sitting in a sidewalk café drinking coffee. It is also the birthplace of Glam Metal, a genre which spawned bands such as Motley Crue and Guns N Roses, and many of the infamous venues where they built their fanbase still survive today. Meet the Freaks For a slice of pure, undistilled Californian wackiness, a visit to Venice Boardwalk (officially called Ocean Front Walk) is an absolute must. Everything that is weird and wonderful in LA is condensed along this stretch of Venice Beach, from speedo-clad body builders to new-age hippies, punks, street performers and more. It is a human freak show of epic proportions, and there simply isn’t a better place for people-watching in the world! Roadtripppp! If you have the time, then it’s well worth taking a road trip along the Pacific Coast Highway up to San Francisco. This iconic road meanders along some of America’s most beautiful coastlines, and takes in Malibu, Santa Barbara and Pismo beach before joining up with Route 101 and crossing the Golden Gate Bridge into San Francisco. The trip could be considered a holiday in itself, and many people travel to America just to do this drive.

Moving over to the East Coast of America, Orlando is a city in the state of Florida that is home to a number of world-famous theme parks. These parks form the backbone of its tourism industry, which attracts a staggering 51 million visitors a year! The most famous of these is the Walt Disney World Resort, aka Disney World, which alone comprises four theme parks, two water parks, 23 hotels and five golf courses! Outside of Disney World, there are several more world-famous theme parks, including Universal Orlando Resort, SeaWorld Orlando, and Wet ‘n’ Wild Water Park. The city is also host to America’s second-biggest movie industry after Hollywood, thanks to several studios being located there, and is considered the base of America’s indie movie scene. Films made in Orlando include The Blair Witch Project and Monster, starring Charlize Theron. This is in addition to the plethora of theatres 30

Italy's art palace Average Summer Temperature: 24°C
For culture, beauty and artistry, there are few places in the world that will overwhelm your senses like Tuscany in Italy. Considered by many to be one of the most beautiful regions on Earth, Tuscany’s scenery and innate natural beauty have inspired some of the world’s most famous artists. Historical figures such as Dante, Botticelli, Michelangelo, Da Vinci and many more have made their home in Tuscany. The region has no less than six UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and many of these are simply the historical centres of various towns in the region, themselves stunning examples of medieval architecture and art. And we haven’t even started on the food! With a rich agricultural industry, the finest and freshest ingredients are inherent in the local cuisine, with breads, cheeses, vegetables, fruits and meats all
grown and produced locally. The region is also famous for the many vineyards that dot the countryside, each with their own unique and individual flavours. Then there is fashion. One of Tuscany’s main cities, Florence, is widely held to be the birthplace of the modern fashion industry in Italy. Gucci, Roberto Cavalli and Emilio Pucci are just three examples of designers who have their headquarters in Florence. GO: British Airways flies from Doha to Pisa Airport via London Heathrow. The Culture Trail You can’t go to Tuscany and not take in all the historical sites dotted around the region. While this might take a fair bit of driving, it’ll be worth the effort. Be sure to visit the aforementioned UNESCO World Heritage Sites, namely the historical centres of Florence, Siena, San Gimignano, and Pienze, as well as the square of the Cathedral of Pisa, and the Val d’Orcia. Museums and galleries galore, as well as an abundance of cafés and restaurants, can be found. Relax in Springs The town of Saturnia in Maremma is famous for its thermal baths. Warm, sulphurous waters spring naturally out of the mountainside, giving rise to many luxurious wellness and spa centres that capitalise on the therapeutic properties of the water. Even if you don’t want to pay for expensive treatments in the spas (even though they’re worth it, in our humble opinion), you absolutely MUST visit the outdoor waterfall Cascate del Mulino, which are made up of natural pools of the warm thermal water, and are free to the public. The Wind Grotto A beautiful system of caves and grottoes located in the Park of the Apuan Alps, the Grotta del Vento is a stunning natural wonder that shouldn’t be missed by anyone visiting Tuscany. To get there, one must first reach the village of Fornovalasco, which is a scenic trip in itself through the Tuscan hills and mountains. The cave network is so large that there are several different tours to choose from, but any one of them will take your breath away.

THE ARTY SOUQ TOUR
Souq Waqif is not just a tourist trap with souvenirs to sell, nor is it just a quick lunch or dinner spot, as it has so much to offer the regular visitor with an artistic eye. FACT went to find out the stories behind the galleries…
Al Markhiya Gallery
The Qatari Hosh for Arts
This small two-floored gallery in the back streets of Souq Waqif was opened with the sole aim of promoting contemporary Arab art. The launch was five years ago this November and, says sales and marketing manager Heather, it’s the oldest private gallery in Doha that is not government funded. A consortium of Qatari businessmen started it instead and they all have similar interests in art, as well as a particular passion for Arab art. It’s not just a small gallery in Doha anymore though, as they have opened a photography gallery called East Wing in Dubai International Financial Centre as well that promotes photographers from all over the world. This month, head over to Al Markhiya to see displayed works by Ismai Azzam and Salem Mathkour from Iraq until the 25th and then from the 28th there will be an exhibition of pieces by Bahrain’s Ahmed Anan, Qatar’s very own Amal Al Athem and Mohamed Al Mazroui from the UAE. Visit www.almarkhiyagallery.com
Ghanim Al Ganim is the owner of this little courtyard in which three small shops lie. Two of these spaces are rented on a three-monthly basis, while he rotates exhibitions in the third. At the time of writing, this is known as The Moroccan Gallery, but when we spoke to him, Ghanim was planning on changing it in the very near future to something a bit different (dates and theme to be confirmed, however). You’ll find the store on your right as you enter the area and then go up a small staircase. From here you get a great view that overlooks the roofs of Souq Waqif. Inside, there is a treasure trove of Moroccan pieces from Berber rugs to beautiful furniture, leather pouffes to authentic and colourful tagines. These exhibits are open to everyone but his main aim lies in targeting the creative youth, he says. Artifacts of Arabia
GIFTS from the holy land
At the moment, this jam-packed store is situated in the Qatari Hosh for Arts courtyard, behind the Souq Waqif Arts Centre. It is managed in-store by Mehboob Hussain but founded by British furniturerestorer David Mowbray who exhibits his pieces around the country regularly. The idea started when David moved to Oman in the mid 80s and he found himself fascinated by the country’s history. He started to restore old chests, doors and window shutters, and design coffee tables and cupboards. He now lives in Qatar and works full-time on integrating antiquities into modern day living. The current exhibition in Artifacts of Arabia has a medley of antiques on display, as well as vibrant artworks from creatives around the region, that are well worth a look.
This beautiful and quaint store is another addition to the Qatari Hosh for Arts courtyard and was opened by Ghassan Issa and his wife, an extremely friendly couple who are willing to tell everyone about their new venture. A small bright white shop with a tinier office coming off it, Gifts from the Holy Land has shelves of colourful ceramics lining the walls. They bring these in from Jerusalem, Hebron, Jordan and Bethlehem. There are pieces made by children in schools in Palestine and others, like necklaces, created by female prisoners there, too. Their aim is to support the arts in Palestine and raise awareness in Qatar of the talent that exists there. You can also request very reasonably priced customised pieces that they will then send off for. Be prepared to wait but it’s certainly worth it (trust us, our editor couldn’t help herself when she visited). “I’m not going to get rich from this,” Ghassan laughs as he explains his dreams to us. “But I will be rich because of my passion.” u

The Arts of Sea and Desert
Shanashel Gallery
Hassan Al Mulla, a prominent Qatari artist with over 40 years experience, owns this tiny shop that lays in the narrow back alleys of the souq, nearby the Al Markhiya Gallery. The Arts of Sea and Desert has in it many of his, and his friends’, paintings and the in-store manager Jaffar holds the fort while stringing together prayer beads. It’s an eclectic store with patriotic scarves and other knickknacks stacked on shelves. Hassan says he stocks up on whatever he thinks sells. It’s not exactly his day job though, as he is actually a very well known artist around the world. Hassan is perhaps one of the most accommodating people you’ll meet. He not only took us on a journey through his career but also steered us around the rest of the souq, introducing us to shopkeepers and translating where necessary. He told us that he was born in the old house that is now the Al Mirqab Boutique Hotel and showed us his brother’s store, too. To us, Hassan embodies the heart of the souq. Learn more in his book, Hassan Al Mulla, available on www.amazon.com
Iraqi artist Bilal Al Dorani came and settled in Qatar decades ago. Now he is perfectly at home in his adopted country and his green-fronted store known as Shanashel Gallery. It is located just opposite the traditional shisha café on the main Souq Waqif street, and here, he displays many of his old and recent artworks. You can see from the varying styles, techniques and textures he uses, how he is not afraid to experiment with his art. He has had some obvious moments of brilliance in the past and even if you’re not out to buy, it’s worth looking at what is on offer here. We sat down for a chat and some karak with him one day and he told us about his career in Qatar and about how he was prominently involved in the reopening of Souq Waqif Art Centre. He even showed us current Qatari postal stamps on which you will find his original artworks! We were suitably impressed.

Souq Waqif Arts Centre
The Handicrafts Centre
As many of you know, the Souq Waqif Arts Centre is located in a renovated Qatari house on the main thoroughfare of Souq Waqif. It looms over the favourite lunch and dinner spots and invites people to walk through with its exquisite interior of colourful hanging lamps and towering palm trees. It’s like a maze inside, with a number of gallery rooms that host rotating exhibitions, and other areas like an authentic (fancy) sitting room that exist just for show. Recently, too, they have introduced a kid’s room where the centre hosts free classes for any and all of the little ones. Jutting off the main lobby area is also La Dolce Vita restaurant, which is owned and managed by an Italian couple, and is a wonderful place to sit and eat. On the other side of this outdoor area, too, there is a newlyestablished artists’ studio where anyone and everyone can go to create. For visitors, it’s worth sticking your nose in to see what is being made that day and to have a chat with the artists.
The narrow street between Al Mirqab Boutique Hotel and the Syrian restaurant Damasca is known as the Handicrafts Centre. Relatively new to Souq Waqif, the centre was inaugurated to promote traditional crafts from around the region. A walk through here is fascinating and offers much insight into various professions such as making instruments, fishing nets, national garments and even mushroom-shaped lamps! Artisans from all over the region have moved to Qatar to showcase their craft in this touristic alleyway. One particular shop that caught our artistic eye is just on the right as you enter. Here, Mohammed from Iran paints traditional Bahraini doors made from clay, that have been brought here from this tiny island nation. He speaks little to no English but is very friendly and it’s wonderful to watch him work on all the large and smaller pieces. This makes a fantastic souvenir or gift.n FACT QATAR MAY

How did you get into dancing?
I got into it watching people dance on television from a young age. It felt like something that I wanted to explore. I like how it is non competitive. It is mostly something to share and express certain emotions everyone is feeling and a dancer puts that into movement. You use many varieties of dance in your performances. What is your favourite type?
It depends on the day. Some days I really love hip hop culture. Others I’m a much more contemporary fan. Others I really like martial arts movement based on marital arts. Extreme flexibility is something I really like – when people mould themselves in different kinds of shapes and the body is able to handle different angles. I can also appreciate rhythm. Flamenco moves me when I see specific rhythms. Indian dance also. It really depends on the day.

How would you describe your style?
Fluid and constantly focusing on connections. Very much about seeing how certain things click with one another like little puzzles. All the movements connect with each other. I’m also very detailed.
What do you expect from your visit to Qatar?
This is my first time coming to Qatar. When I’m travelling, half the time is spent in the hotel, so I’m basically thinking it will probably be the same - going from work to the hotel. There is little time for any of us dancers to explore. We are too worried about getting the art right that you don’t have time to do anything else. We’re not really thinking of anything but having the best possible state for the show. You recently worked on the hit film Anna Karenina. How did that challenge you?
Yes, I did the choreography for Anna Karenina; all the organisation of the

weight… specific things that would help to build the character less in a comfort zone. And she was willing to go there because the character is very uncomfortable. What has been your biggest career highlight?
I’m not that much into the fame game so I don’t really care. I just want to be happy so what I try to do is be in places that make me feel fulfilled. I think if I had to answer this question I would say being in the Shaolin temple in China... I was there for three months and it was really great to be with Shaolin monks. I was spiritually enlightened and I got a lot out of my time there. Ed’s note: This resulted in his performance with Sadler’s Wells called Sutra. Is there anyone you’re particularly inspired by? photo by koen broos
I’m really inspired by Pina Bausch. She opened a lot of doors for contemporary dance. She wasn’t afraid to have an element of classical ballet but at the same time do something very different and experimental at a time when people were almost scared and were not wanting to see that side of humanity. When she died a couple years ago I was really sad.
Project M¡longa
Sidi Larbi is also in the process of creating another show that is produced by Sadler’s Wells. Project M¡longa is rooted in Argentinean culture with tango at the heart of the overall performance. A milonga is a type of social dance gathering held in Buenos Aires’ bars. The inspiration from this has taken on a new contemporary form and become the first international largescale production about tango that is directed by a non-Argentine. Cherkaoui has collaborated with a talented cast of Argentinean dancers and musicians to showcase the unique techniques of this famous partner dance style. It will premiere on 23rd May at Théâtre du Jorat in Switzerland.
movement. I got the opportunity to work with some really great actors. The content was new but the concept was clear and the director knew what he wanted to see so this made it less of a challenge. Also, the movie is based in theatre and the theatre is something I really know and I know what I’m doing. In that way it wasn’t a challenge. The fact that it was in that context made it feel like home. How was it working with Keira Knightley?
Keira is very smart and very analytical about things. It was interesting for me to always find a way to connect with her analytical mind - to show how she could translate in her own knowledge, because she has no dance but she does understand directions and angles as an actress. I was always trying to speak in a way to challenge her and with her body
How about any people you want to collaborate with?
There are lots of people I dream of working with and I try to connect with these people. I do dream to work with Kate Bush. I really like her. Her work is very cheeky and like a little drawing. I like her fantasy world.
Besides people, what else are you inspired by?
Coincidences. I like how things fall into place - the serendipity that often happens when you let things happen and find its way. Everything has a spot and everything has a place and everyone has a moment to shine. I find that really beautiful in life… when all the pieces of the puzzles eventually fall into place. n GO: Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Russell Maliphant and Wayne McGregor will be performing at Katara Cultural Village from 25th to 30th of this month. dinner and plans to “make love on the moon” in his “space cocoon”. It seems that, now JT has a hot new wife in the form of Jessica Biel, his music-making has gone downhill. The album, as a whole, is at times a good listen, though every song just seems to drag on and on. Even on the album highlight ‘Mirrors’, a robot voice repeats “You are the love of my life” 35 times in eight minutes... it’s all just a bit too much. ‘Suit & Tie’ is an awful excuse for a song, while ‘That Girl’ displays his status as an old veteran of tabloid coverage. The fact remains that it has been seven years since FutureSex/ LoveSounds, and JT’s spot has been taken over by the likes of Lady Gaga, Taylor “Always-Heartbroken’ Swift and the dreadfully wonderful phenomenon that is Justin Bieber. An old-fashioned talent, JT will undoubtedly disappear again and return to shine once more. We recommend this is best enjoyed with some time on your hands and a very active love life. Soundtrack

JUST how much time off does Dido need? Motherhood means she has spent five years off the scene and her latest album is far from a fantastic comeback. The title track ‘Girl Who Got Away’ finds her fantasizing about nothing; ‘Sitting on the Roof of the World’ describes her desperation to fit in and hatred for fame; ‘Loveless Hearts’ finds her declaring herself despondent; ‘Blackbird’ curses the desiring heart and ‘Happy New Year’ sees her ready to sob into her champagne. Saying all this, Dido’s distinctive tone has a therapist’s resolve, although sometimes she does run the risk of sounding narcoleptic and drifting in to zombieland. We do feel for Dido. There is a stalwart power to her character which makes us hope she never makes good on her dream to disappear completely. 48

THIS man is hot on the music list (and he was just at the Bahrain F1!). It’s nice to hear Ne-Yo return to his core of melodic R&B on his fifth studio album, not to mention his build on his everexpanding dance-pop footprint on the second half. The prolific singersongwriter, who actually wrote over 150 tracks for the album, even dabbles in country with Tim McGraw. ‘The Cracks In Mr Perfect’ is a welcome stroke of honesty, ‘Lazy Love’ is a sexy, bedroomready ballad worthy of its place; ‘Let Me Love You’ re-established his top 40 appeal and is further proof that co-writer Sia Furler is the creme de la creme of emotive dancefloor ballads. An absolute must-buy, must-listen, must love for everyone... dripping in soul, great tracks and in-your-head beats.

THERE seems to be a song for everyone on this CD set. The 50th Anniversary compilation contains a pretty awesome selection of songs which go with the adventure and action theme in James Bond. You’ve got Tom Jones, Nancy Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Carly Simon, Tina Turner, Chris Cornell, Madonna.. just to name a few. Fans of Adele and the latest Skyfall film will be disappointed to hear that the theme tune didn’t make the cut - god knows why. We all have our moments when Bond is not on the movie night list - the same goes for this soundtrack. Unless you like more than three to five films and/or theme songs, then don’t part with your money. It is, however, a great purchase for those hosting a Bond dress-up party.

WHAT’S IT ABOUT:
This really sets James apart from just being another nameless lump in lycra
Fiction
The Storyteller By Jodi Picoult
WHAT’S IT ABOUT:
SAGE Singer is a baker who works through the night preparing the day’s breads and pastries, trying to escape a reality of loneliness, bad memories, and the shadow of her mother’s death. When elderly Josef Weber appears at her support group, they strike up an unlikely friendship and, despite their differences, they become companions. That is until Josef reveals a terrible secret... WHAT’S IT LIKE:
This is a book which gracefully explores the lengths we will go to in order to protect our families and to keep the past from dictating the future. This is her 19th novel and, although some readers have classified it as a little confusing, it is well-worth your time. Make sure you have a box of tissues handy... you will need them.
WRITTEN by husband and wife, this tells the extraordinary story of Olympic gold medallist and rower James Cracknell: from the moment he stood bored on the cricket pitch at Kingston Grammar School and watched the rowing, to the yo-yoing of his career, the highs, the lows, the thrills and the spills. After being hit by a truck wing mirror while cycling in Arizona, James suffered life-changing injuries which changed him from being a safe, reliable and kind man into a shorttempered fantasist with memory loss. This is packed full of stories about achievements, battles against life’s barriers, being a father, a husband and a patient. But, above all, it tells the truth about being a champion.
WHAT’S IT LIKE:
Over the past few years, British rowers have done so well it is often hard to remember who has done and won what, where and when. With two Olympic golds and six golds in the world championships, James was in danger of becoming a victim of his team’s success and remaining another slightly nameless lump in lycra. This all changed when he forced his way into the national UK consciousness with a series of extraordinary feats of endurance including rowing across the Atlantic and walking to the South Pole. This is an honest autobiography; an involving, intense, moving and powerful account of how a man battles to become the man he once was before a freak accident occurred.

Yet, for nearly all of six million years of existence, human society had none of these things. While the gulf that divides us from our primitive ancestors may seem unbrigeably wide, we can glimpse much of our former lifestyle in those largely traditional societies still. This is a first-hand picture of the human past as it has been for millions of years. WHAT’S IT LIKE:

drawn into a world of the super rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As he bears witness, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and highoctane tragedy.
WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING:
It isn’t often that we come across films that make us tingle with excitment: The Great Gatsby has given us the ultimate set of goosebumps. Firstly, what a cast! DiCaprio has already proved his worth from his last role in Django Unchained; Carey Muliigan set her standards in An Education; Tobey Maguire gave us an impressive performance in both Spiderman and Seabiscuit;
and Joel Edgerton is currently hot on casting directors’ lists after his stealing performances in Warrior, Zero Dark Thirty and King Arthur. Also look out for Isla Fisher, as she seems to be paving her way to more serious and successful roles. Probably one of the most anticipated films of the year, especially after its release was postponed from Christmas 2012, Baz Luhrmann’s extraordinarily compelling vision and talent will be sure to have F. Scott Fitzgerald smiling in his grave. The fact that this blockbuster is opening the 66th Cannes Film Festival only goes to show that we should expect big things from this film. Big things indeed.

After being called back home, the crew of the USS Enterprise find a seemingly unstopabble force which has attacked Starfleet and left Earth in chaos. Captain James T. Kirk (Pine) and the crew of the Enterprise are tasked with leading the deadly manhunt to capture the party responsible and settle an old score.
[ SYNOPSIS]
WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING: Because it’s Star Trek... and this is the twelth Star Trek film and also serves as the sequel to the 2009 release. You only have to watch the trailer to get your heart racing. We understand that this may not be all of your cups of tea, but it is worth a watch all the same. Chris Pine’s piercing blue eyes are a plus on screen, while Benedict Cumberbatch (what a name) has perfected the hard glare. And Zoe Saldana... need we give you any more reasons to go and watch?
‘Queue wind change...!’
‘Bad boys...bad boys whatcha gonna do...”
Epic is based on the children’s book by William Joyce and follows the story of an army of bugs who summon mythical creatures, known as Leaf Men, to help them protect their garden from an evil spider queen. From the same creators of Ice Age and Rio, this film is about good versus evil, secret universes and whimsical characters. Expect to hear the voices of Colin Farrel, Amanda Seyfried, Beyonce Knowles, Christoph Waltz, Jason Sudeikis and Johnny Knoxville. Great one for the kids.
Now You See Me pit an elite FBI squad against ‘The Four Horsemen’, a super-team of the world’s greatest illusionists. The team pull off a series of daring heists against corrupt business leaders during their shows, showering the stolen profits on their audiences while staying one step ahead of the law. Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, Isla Fisher and Morgan Freeman...YES PLEASE!
Hangover Part III D: todd phillips C: bradley cooper, zach galifianakis, ed helms
WHAT’S IT ABOUT: This time, there’s no wedding or no bachelor party, so what could go wrong... right? All bets are off when the Wolfpack take to the road. Think of too much alcohol, too much ego and a whole lotta trouble.
WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING: For the very reason that this is the third and final film of the franchise. Even if you thought, like us, the first one was epic and the second let the side down, this is the type of film you go to watch for the sake of saying ‘have you seen the new Hangover film?’. In all honesty, we are sad this is the last one of the trio. Let’s hope a Bridesmaids sequel hits the screens soon to make up for it. FACT QATAR MAY

GoPro’s cameras has been dazzling extreme sports enthusiasts for years. The original HD Hero first delivered stills and wide-angle HD back in 2009, and those capabilities improved with a higher-res sensor, faster burst mode and wider field of view in the Hero2. Now, the Hero3 has been rolled out, which packs even greater performance (up to 4K video) in a cube that’s almost a full centimetre thinner than its predecessors… have we got your attention? Despite the fact that GoPro hasn’t changed the look of its cameras much, it’s really what is underneath and inside that counts. The latest top-of-the-line camera packs an f/2.8 wide-angle lens in front of a 12-megapixel sensor and built-in WiFi. The Hero3 checks in at 2.28 x 1.57 by 0.82 inches and is no longer clad in all silver, like its siblings. Instead it is coated in smooth soft-touch plastic on the back and a textured version of the same stuff on its sides. Not only does this make the camera easier to hold, it also provides a nice visual contrast…and a finish that will hold up better to the rough and tumble lifestyle it will undoubtedly lead. Those with stubbier fingers will be happy to hear that the power switch on the front and the record button up top have doubled in size. There

To add to this, GoPro has also released a free, self-titled app for iOS and Android that turns your handset into a remote control. Once connected, the app provides both a real-time preview (roughly a 1.5 second delay) of the camera’s field of view and a full suite of controls. You can stop and start recording, switch between shooting modes, change frame and resolution rate, delete pics and clips and even check the battery status and remaining SD card space. Sony Experia z Available: Virgin Megastore (QR2,499)
The first question we have to ask is, has Sony finally got a smartphone right? With a cutting-edge camera, a super-slim design and the ability to withstand life’s knocks and bumps, the Xperia Z is a phone that has got everyone pretty fired up about Sony Mobile again… at last! Although the Xperia S and T were promising releases and examples of striking out from the brand, the latest model is really banking on making a cataclysmic dent in the makeup of the smartphone market; so much so that Sony has claimed to have ‘reinvented the phone’ – a bold and rather optimistic claim. Well, the early signs it will steal the limelight from its competitors are quite promising: there is a quad-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon Krait processor, 13MP camera, 16GB storage (which is expandable, woohoo!), 2GB RAM, water and dust-resistant, 1080p HD screen with Bravia Engine and LTE to name a few. To give the brand credit, there are few manufacturers out there who can take what is, effectively, a plain black square and make it into something beautiful. It may be a magnet for fingerprints; others have already come out saying, “looks like every other smartphone out there”. It is also not the lightest handset out there at 146g, but it exudes a heftiness that implies a quality device. The front is minimalist, while the back is a little busier and STUCK. As it is now becoming the custom, good luck if you want to try and remove the battery. Although unnerving for someone testing this fact, you can drop it into a sink and it’ll work absolutely fine, judging you have covered the ports using watertight protectors. There is so much that Sony has got right with this product. It has built on the strong heritage of the Walkman and given power users one of the things they often desperately crave - a good battery performance and top speeds. There is also

TECHNOLOGY
The Porsche World Roadshow has one purpose, and one purpose alone: Showing off ! Porsche describe it as “showcasing our latest technologies”, but what they really mean is, “We’re Porsche, and this is the awesome stuff we do. Now go out there and be suitably impressed!” In order to do this, they bring the entire Porsche range (excluding, of course, halo models like the Carrera GT) to racetracks around the world, and devise a series of exercises that best demonstrate their capabilities. Within the range, all of Porsche’s standard and optional technologies will be demonstrated, such as the PASM and the PDCC (Porsche Active Stability Management and Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control, for the uneducated among you!). In order to do this, Porsche allocated a portion of the track to hot laps, and another portion to a rather technical slalom course and finally an off-road course. On the track, we were able to experience the range of 911s, Panameras and Cayennes, and on the slalom course we experienced the Porsche Boxster S. The off-road course, obviously, demonstrated the capabilities of all the Cayennes.

ALI DRIVER SAYS THAT
“A Porsche experience is something that you’ll never forget – it’s what has made Porsche such an iconic brand!” Ali Driver recently attended the Porsche World Roadshow at the Dubai Autodrome, and savoured every last minute… While I can’t go into detail about all the Porsche models I drove, some of which I’ve reviewed before, including the Boxster S, the 911 Carrera S and the Panamera GTS, I felt that two which were new to me that day were worthy of special mention. First off is the Cayenne Hybrid. This model boasts a supercharged V6 combined with a sophisticated
electric motor and mated to an eight-speed transmission. For those of you who want the luxury of a Cayenne whilst still being ecofriendly, this is a must-see. If you accelerate gently enough, the electric motor does all the work. You can tell because of the gauge on the dash showing you which of the motors
TECHNOLOGY
is powering the car. When you put your foot down, the V6 kicks in to provide petrol power. And when you’re already on the move, while you’re coasting the hybrid will shut down the petrol and cruise on electric. And finally, if you’re driving along and need to overtake something, when you floor it, the electric motors will boost the power of the petrol engine for that added ‘oomph’. It’s all seamless, and very impressive! However, if it’s performance you want, then you’ll want to check out my second noteworthy mention of the day. I’d already fallen in love with the Panamera GTS, or more specifically, its naturally-aspirated V8 and the lovely sound it makes, during a previous test drive. So, it was only natural that I’d also develop a soft spot for the Cayenne GTS. It really stole the show for me. As I’ve already established on previous u

road tests, the Cayenne handles with an agility that is almost supernatural, given the fact that it has all the size and weight of an SUV. With that delicious 420hp 4.8 litre V8, the luxurious and stylish interior with lashings of Alcantara, and the modified chassis and sports package, the Cayenne GTS is a stunner. The Turbo might be quicker, but if you want to save a few grand, the GTS isn’t really much of a compromise! With the GTS, Porsche claims the sprint from 0 to 100km/h takes 5.4 seconds, and the top speed is 260km/h. It sits almost an inch lower than the Cayenne S and employs stiffer dampers, although the settings can be switched between sport and comfort mode, and the ride height can be adjusted if necessary. It boasts the same sporty and aggressive styling as the Turbo, 60

and comes with the Sport Chrono package, with which come standard the PASM and the PDCC. So basically, what you get with the Cayenne GTS is a Cayenne Turbo, only without the actual ‘turbo’, and as a result a slightly less heftier price tag, which to me, is an absolute bargain. We love! n

Our Mystery Motoring Expert, Ali Driver, tries desperately to be objective and avoid being caught up in the hype when reviewing the Mk 7 VW Golf… It won Top Gear Magazine’s “All The Car You’ll Ever Need Car of the Year 2012”, as well as 2013 European Car of the Year, and 2013 World Car of the Year, both highly respected awards created by a conglomerate of motoring publications in Europe. It was summarised by WHAT CAR? magazine as being “the best yet. Classy, refined, and great to

drive, it’s one of the very best small family cars.” With all this pomp and fanfare surrounding this new car, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I went to pick up this new embodiment of automotive excellence! Was it going to travel back through time when it hit 88 miles an hour? Was it going to sprout wings and fly when I felt like a holiday? Would it turn into a submarine if I drove it into a lake? Well, no, it wouldn’t do any of these things. These awards aren’t given to cars that
are the best in the world, because in that case they’d be given to cars like the Bugatti Veyron. No, these awards are given to cars that excel in their class – that do what they’re supposed to do, but do it extremely well, and for a price that mere mortals such as ourselves can afford. So, I have to take a step back before climbing into the Golf, and establish exactly what the car is supposed to be. Well, it’s supposed to be a reasonably priced family hatchback that’s practical and pleasant to drive. In a segment this competitive (well, in Europe, anyway) it must also be stylish and well appointed to make it stand out. It’s got to have a certain level of desirability, and it’s got to be reliable and affordable. So the big question is, how well does the Golf do all these things? And to answer that question, let me just say that I understand why it has won all these awards so far. First off, let’s start with the exterior styling. Sleek, modern, and perhaps the sportiest looking incarnation yet, this latest version will further cement the Golf ’s popularity in the gulf, despite hatchbacks being a decidedly hard sell in the region. Secondly, it’s huge fun to drive. I should say at this point that I was NOT driving the GTI, with it’s 2.0l

turbocharged engine – I was, in fact, driving the 1.4l TSI SE model, with a turbocharged 1.4l engine with an output of 122hp, which is, in fact, 7hp more than it’s 1.6l predecessor. Many in this region would turn their noses up at a mere 1.4l engine, but the Golf is not, and never has been, about raw power – it has always been about lightness, agility and driving pleasure, and the performance that comes with it, and all this the new Golf has in spades. It is a lot of fun to drive, with the growly little engine shoving the car along at a surprising pace, and the handling, responsiveness and nimbleness of the Golf just begging for it to be really driven. You can’t help yourself – you find yourself powering through traffic and nipping round roundabouts like some kind of demented boy racer. Despite being bigger than the previous generation, it is still 100kg lighter, adding to the u

already impressive agility of the car. Inside, things only get better – VW are not a premium brand, but it’s no secret that they like to position themselves above the rest in the midrange segments. The quality, style and features you get with any VW are impressive, and this goes for the Golf too. When you’re inside, everything screams ‘premium’, from the steering wheel controls to the touch screen infotainment system to the figurehugging bucket seats and the stylish dash – it all just boasts a touch of quality that few other automakers can match. So, just to summarise, I wouldn’t buy this car! I would, in fact, buy the Golf GTI, because if this normal Golf is this good, then the GTI must be downright amazing! However, if you’re not bothered about getting a sports model, and you want a comfortable, practical and affordable family hatchback of a very high quality, then you can never go wrong with a Golf, and especially not this new generation. n
The interior of the Golf screams ‘premium’, even though it’s a midrange hatchback!
Who is Ali Driver? 1. He lives in Qatar and says he grew up on the streets of Doha, but we think he’s actually from a rich family. 2. He says his car skills are self-taught, but we’re sure we’ve seen a certificate from the Losail International Circuit on his wall. 3. He drives cars better than anyone we know (but don’t ever tell him). 4. He claims to be able to change a regular car tyre in under four minutes, but we’re sure that’s only when his wife helps him.

This Is Why I’m Hot
Now is the time of year when our clothes get notably shorter and lighter. This month we’ve chosen our favourite pieces in which to bear the scorching Qatar sun, making sure you break a sweat in style.
Vincci
Vincci’s summer collection is ideal for the young professional woman looking to insert a little excitement into her business wardrobe. This pair of expertly cut tapered trousers, seen here worn over a simple figurecomplementing white vest, are the perfect example of office chic.

ALDO
Wedges are a seasonal favourite. Aldo makes a statement by approaching the classic contemporary summer design with a sculptural hand, creating an unorthodox heel we plan on adorning on our feet like it’s art.
Fashion
Miss selfridge
Pastels have made a decided presence in the colour stories of recent summers and 2013 is no exception. Embrace an innocent feminine sensibility with this pair of loose fitting shorts from Miss Selfridge.
H&M
In simplicity there is beauty. This season’s wardrobe essential is the camisole and we can’t seem to get our hands on enough to curb our fashion cravings. This low cut design by H&M worn over a slim-fitting trouser or draped skirt is just the thing for summer.
Victoria Beckham
By far our favourite piece from the Victoria Beckham S/S 2013 collection, this sweet but sexy look is a surefire summer hit. Structure is key, with a lace insert below the collar and crisp angular lines defining the garment’s architectural take on traditional masculine tailoring.
Massimo dutti
Sunglasses are a necessity this time of year, and this pair by Massimo Dutti are so chic we find ourselves creating new reasons to bear the sweltering heat.
lacoste
Vest tops are our preferred summer wardrobe staple. Easy to wear, and even easier to style, this dual-tone striped vest by Lacoste can’t find its way into our wardrobes fast enough.
TOPSHOP
Taking two of our most beloved seasonal runway trends, the kicker short and geo prints, Topshop offers a pair that is to die for.
Stradivarius
Give your feet a break with this pair of delightfully sweet mint coloured slippers by Stradivarius.
JUICy couture
We love Juicy Couture’s fit and flare mini skirt; it’s playful shape makes it an ideal summer purchase. Style against a crisp, heavily structured shirt to create a contrast that will offset its cutesy image.
massimo dutti
Recycled and reinvented, colour blocking is a trend that has graced numerous runways in recent years. Massimo Dutti’s three-tone wedges are the prefect illustration of resort style.
Chloe
There’s a reason we, like most girls, are obsessed with everything Chloe. With Claire Waight Keller at the helm, Chloe’s seasonal runway offerings can only be described as a seamless unity of elegant feminine sophistication with clean contemporary tailored design. This season it was boxy silhouettes, sheer panelling, floral appliqué and oversized ruffles that stole our hearts.

“Trendy yet comfortable designs that are made for a good workout session” Overall, the colours focus on five shades: metallic silver, electric blue, white, neon lime and black. The items are made for urban wear by combining cold colours with futuristic materials, such as metallic mesh, plastic and classics like leather. In terms of materials, the collection contains the latest techniques in textile technology. The GES DRY technique is used for example, which is a high-tech fabric designed to keep the body dry and comfortable, perfect for the gym (and Qatar’s hot weather!). Basically, the absorbent molecules added to the fabric allow water to pass through in a gas state.
An intense hour at the gym tends to leave you feeling happy and motivated but never glamorous (although most of us wish it would!). Well, Bershka is trying to change all that with their Start Moving Collection, which was launched in March, with trendy yet comfortable designs that are made for a good workout session. As American sport becomes ingrained in popular culture, fashion references are being made to baseball, basketball, rugby and boxing, and this can be seen throughout Start Moving. It features a line of footwear, including heeled shoes with a sporty feel and trainers for the gym, as well as other great pieces that can also be worn on the street.
This means, says the brand, that it allows greater sporting efficiency as the body does not have to waste energy on the same process. To be honest, we’re pretty surprised our favourite high street brands haven’t picked up on this before, as you’re going to the gym to feel your best so why not look your best as well? That’s one less excuse for avoiding peak times at the gym…

A
relatively new addition to Doha’s dining scene, Prime is a fine-dining experience specialising in all things ‘meat’! From steaks and grills to one-off specials involving imported game meat, each and every dish is cooked to extremely high standards, which we were about to find out. Situated on the first floor of the InterContinental The City, Prime is a modern and yet elegant venue. With a choice of long tables for big groups to more private dining booths, there’s an option for everyone, no matter their needs. Even though Chef Rowther has only been with Prime for two months, he is already introducing winning flavours to the restaurant that we highly recommend you check out for yourself. Chef Rowther is originally from Chennai, India, but despite the fact that he comes from a country whose cuisine is popular around the world, upon entering culinary school he quickly decided to move away from Indian food, and threw himself instead into French cuisine. Although he had originally intended to become a fashion designer when he was younger, he quickly found that cooking fulfilled his creative ambitions as much as fashion design would have. During stints in several fivestar hotels in India and the Gulf, including the Hilton and the Fairmont, he was also introduced to Italian and other Mediterranean cooking techniques, and he brings all that experience and knowledge with him to Prime. First off in our experience was the Seared Foie Gras with brioche and mixed berry compote. We’d actually never had foie gras before, but this was perhaps the perfect introduction to this highly prized dish. As this is a very rich dish, it has to be prepared in a certain way for it to be enjoyable, explains Chef Rowther: “Foie gras is a very fatty ingredient. It’s goose liver, so when you season foie gras with salt and pepper you 84

It’s rich and delicious, and you just sear it, but you don’t need any oil, because it’s already very fatty, It takes only a short time to cook.” The foie gras is served with a berry compote, which is mixed berries braised with sugar syrup and cinnamon. “The foie gras always goes very well with berries and fruits, because the sweet, tangy taste complements the rich flavour of the foie gras.” As this is a very rich dish, it’s also served in a small portion, and was therefore the perfect way to whet our appetite but still leave plenty of
room for the delights to come. Next up was the steak, and oh, what a steak! This came in the form of a medium-rare grilled beef tenderloin with garlic mashed potato, braised fennel and glazed baby carrots, dressed in a veal reduction gravy. It was quite simply one of the best steaks we’ve ever had! The meat was deliciously tender, and complemented beautifully by the veal gravy. The mash was smooth and creamy, with subtle hints of garlic, and the baby carrots, glazed with sugar, butter and a dash of orange juice provided a lovely tart
sweetness to the whole ensemble. It was all rounded off with an amazing dessert: warm apple crumble tart with peanut butter ice cream and caramel sauce. There wasn’t a crumb left on the plates of any of the courses when the waiter took them away; we literally devoured the lot! f you’re looking for a kidfriendly but fun and lively Friday brunch then we have just found the answer: Coral at InterContinental Doha. This is the newly renovated all-day dining restaurant at the hotel and it’s been done pretty well we must say. It’s lovely and spacious with pink and blue mosaic tiles. It sits right next to the pool with an outdoor terrace as well, which means it has a very summery, almost underwater vibe (hence the name Coral perhaps). It’s one of those places where you really feel like you’re on holiday. On the day we went it was absolutely packed, inside and out. The vibe was certainly there for a brunch. It’s a mixed clientele from what we saw – expat and non-expat families with younger and older kids, big groups of 20- and 30-somethings, as well as dating couples. The kids don’t bother you at all (if you’re going childless) as there is a small kids zone in the corner where they are kept entertained with games and activities. 86

The buffet spread is fantastic and very eclectic. The starters range from the usual mezze and salads to sushi and oysters. These were well done although the lack of signage for these dishes confused us and our token vegetarian accidently ended up with some chicken on her plate (this was immediately recognised though). For the mains, there is an interesting mix, presented on small plates (perfect as you want to try everything!), from veal to foie gras on toast, and a small pot of mussels to a massive lamb to carve. Here, you can also let the chefs know how you want things done and there is a live pasta cooking station. [ THE BILL ] Friday brunch package (soft drinks)

At our table, we fell in love with the salmon baked in a banana leaf, as its Thai-inspired flavours encouraged us to devour it all in less than a minute. Plus, the rather unusual shrimp and mushroom Tom Yum was delicious – not too spicy and with the right amount of flavour. There is also a huge bowl of seafood paella on offer, which is another wonderfully fragrant, lip smacking worthy meal - a definite FACT recommendation right there. If you haven’t filled yourself to the brim by this point, then it’s on to desserts, which we have to say is the most impressive course here. There are so many dishes to choose from! We almost filled our table with small plates and still there was more to try. Our favourites were the crème brulee, umm ali and the decadent chocolate fountain. All in all, we’d definitely go back. Particularly if it was paired with a day at the InterContinental Doha beach and pool. It’s a great day out for all the family! n

A brand new seafood venue was officially opened last month in Souq Waqif at the Al Jasra Boutique Hotel. It’s name, Al Sanbouk, derives from the Arabic word for ‘dhow’ and this is also an interior design theme. On the menu and at the live cooking stations you’ll find a wide selection of fresh fish, lobster, shrimps, crabs and much more, cooked by expert chefs to your liking in a variety of international styles, such as Italian and Thai. On top of all that, myriad local and international-inspired appetisers, entrées and desserts are also on offer. Hotel manager, Christophe Dumeige, said at the launch, “In addition to being able to enjoy some of the best seafood in town, we are positive that guests will appreciate the oceanic theme of Al Sanbouk, which is designed to evoke an image of the warm sand and gleaming waters of the Arabian Gulf.”

Ladies and gentlemen we have a new addition for the happy hour table this May as Polynesian fusion restaurant and bar Trader Vic’s has finally launched the long-awaited Tiki Time. Starting this month and for the foreseeable future, from Saturday until Tuesday, 5pm to 9pm, you are able to enjoy discounted prices on selected beverages including the popular Tiki at Trader Vic’s lounge and terrace. Since the venue opened just over a year ago at the Hilton Doha, punters all over the country have continued to swarm the place on weekends, thanks primarily to the tropical vibe, friendly service, substantial drinks and food selections,
and reasonable prices. On top of all that, the authentic live Cuban band perks up the atmosphere each evening with their lively tunes, coaxing visitors to get up and dance. Now, with the launch of their four-hour long Tiki Time, there are bound to be far more happy customers frequenting the lounge and terrace during the week as well. Over in the restaurant, from Sunday to Thursday, noon to 3pm, there is also a business lunch. Plus, on the first Sunday of every month at 7pm, the German community has a get-together with a special themed menu.

There is yet another exciting sporting event to add to our calendar, as Doha 2013, the first meeting in the IAAF Diamond League schedule, kicks off on the 10th. It’s an athletic extravaganza that is pulling out all the stops with many a big name. Among them is Jamaican runner Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, the 2012 overall winner in the 100m Diamond Race, as well as the reigning 100m Olympic and World Champion. Also here will be American 400m superstar and Olympic gold medalist Allyson Felix, who is not only the first reigning IAAF World Female Athlete of the Year, but also a Doha recordholder after she has won ten races in as
many entries. “It is always nice to compete in Doha,” she said. “In many ways it has started to feel like a home away from home”. Waving the local banner is Qatari Mutaz Essa Barshim, a 21-yearold high jumper, who won a bronze medal at the London Olympics. He’ll be up against some stiff competition but doesn’t faze him. He said, “In all competitions I enter, I aim for victory... the world’s best athletes will come to Doha and I want to thank the organisers for setting up such a high standard competition because it will really help push myself to the limit.”

We have a genuine champion in Qatar, as last month Mohamed AbuIssa walked away as winner in the Quad Bike category from one of the world’s most prestigious international cross-country rallies – the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge 2013. The track was tough as it reached deep in to the Liwa desert covering towering dunes and desert plains. It tested the drivers and their machinery to their limits. Since the challenge’s launch in 1991, it has become known as one of the most dramatic rallies, and has brought the best out of many of the world’s top riders. Qatar’s motorsport fans are thrilled to say that they are now competing and that one of their own has been crowned champion for the third time. The race proved to be very excited as Mohamed clinched the title with just over three minutes on UAE’s defending champion, Obaid Al Kitbe. Mohamed said of his win, “It feels great to finish and to win the quads. My air filter was clogged 4km from the finish line and my engine just stopped. I had to rip it out and crawl to the finish line. “Luckily, I still won, so it’s an amazing feeling, especially because this is my first Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge. “It’s been an unbelievable five days.”

It has been confirmed that world-renowned physical theatre performance act, Stomp, is coming to Qatar in June. Tickets for the show, which will be held at Qatar National Convention Center, will go on sale on the 2nd of May. The show is a tightly choreographed expression of rhythm, which, they it states on their website, “is common to all cultures. Everyone knows rhythm, if only from the beating of their own heart – it is the basis of all music.” The act was originally established in the UK but there are now various groups performing throughout the world. They were also involved in the closing ceremony of last year’s London Olympics.

Connecting Doha-based Artists with the Collectors The innovative team at Katara Art Center has launched a new initiative known as the Community Support Art Programme - the first of its kind in the region. The idea is to provide a platform for local artists to gain access to potential collectors and vice versa. Words by Katy Gillett
Can you believe that the woman pictured is 50? Well, I certainly couldn’t when I met Su-Man Hsu at the W Doha, as she was visiting from London and W Soho. She’s like a petite bundle of vivacious energy and, of course, her complexion is flawless. A facialist to the stars, former dancer, Pilates and shiatsu expert Su-Man is to thank for the fabulous faces of big names such as Anne Hathaway, Frieda Pinto and Juliette Binoche. Her unique shiatsu inspired facial, dubbed the ‘non-invasive alternative to botox’, has taken the world by storm and Hathaway even described it as ‘a lifechanging experience’. Let’s just say I was pretty excited about this treatment review and she couldn’t have been visiting at a better time, as my skin had been on a downward spiral for the past few months thanks to Doha’s weather, water and, as Su-Man embarrassingly guessed correctly, a lack of regular exercise. “I’m sorry to tell you this Katy,” she said as she performed the 100
FACT QATAR MAY
pre-consultation and computer-aided skin examination, “but your skin is stagnant.” Oh the shame. Luckily, I was in the right hands, literally. Su-Man has developed her unique facial after years of trial and error. Using her own products (which will launch worldwide in September) she purifies, energises and rehydrates your skin with a combination of deep cleansing, steaming, extraction and a customised massage that targets the face, scalp, shoulders and neck, depending on your needs.. Plus, there’s some reflexology thrown in there... It’s like nothing you’ve ever experienced. I can’t say it was relaxing. In some parts it was downright painful. But I will say it was 100% worthwhile and left me feeling refreshed and re-energised. Whatever had been lurking beneath my stagnant skin had been eradicated, I was glowing and I’m happy to say my face has never reverted to the same state since. In my opinion this is an absolute musttry if you care about your face at all.

The captivating smell of frankincense permeates this southern Omani town, for Salalah is known as the probable birthplace of its tree. Thousands of years ago, frankincense was worth its weight in gold, but take a trip to the low-key market here and you can buy these precious yet affordable scents to take home, along with some Omani jewellery made from local silver. If you’re lucky you can also take in some traditional dancing that sometimes entertains passersby in the town centre. Then, head to the coastline where warm water geysers splash from the ground, ensuring playtime for children and adults alike. On the other hand, the lush green valleys make an ideal picnic spot, and you’ll be sharing ground with both foreign visitors and locals, as they enjoy the cool weather. Alternatively, take a drive up into the high mountain villages that 102
FACT QATAR MAY
surround the city to get a taste of the traditional life with local farmers. In some places, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’re driving through the English countryside! June to September is the busy season for Salalah because this is not a place to bathe in the summer sun; it’s where you go to cool off. When most of the Gulf states reach temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, Salalah has an average of 28 degrees. These balmy temperatures make for a welcome escape for those of us Gulf-dwellers who long for coolness and calm during a sultry summer without an expensive flight. We recommend staying at the Hilton Salalah Resort. It is a beachfront oasis set among beautifully manicured gardens. The long winding courtyard and freeform pool is the ideal place to relax and if you want to pamper yourself to the fullest extent, get an outdoor message. Then, make sure you wander down to the Sea Breeze Bar for a refreshing cocktail.

As they wind down operations, Qatar Animal Welfare Society host an open day on their ninth anniversary.

As most of you will know by now, the Qatar Animal Welfare Society is facing an imminent eviction. One of the largest animal shelters in the country, QAWS has been taking and rehoming abandoned cats and dogs for nine years now, and by the end of this month they will have to close their operation. To find homes for the remaining 250 animals they are sheltering, to clear their charity shop and to celebrate their ninth anniversary, QAWS will be hosting a Shelter Open Day on the 3rd of this month. On sale there will be merchandise, second hand goods, books, refreshments and plenty of baked goodies. Just two months ago, the QAWS team announced their closure in a post of Facebook, which said: The organisers announced on their Facebook page, “It is with heavy hearts and through many tears that we have to announce the closure of QAWS, effective immediately. As you all know, we are being evicted from our current location and must be gone by May 31st… 104
FACT QATAR MAY
“We WILL fight to the bitter end but unfortunately we need to prepare for the worst and our priority is what will happen to the animals and as such we have had to make this incredibly difficult decision.” They have spent the last few months contacting local press, the Ministry of Environment, the Animal Resource Department, companies and other individuals but have yet to find someone to help them find land to relocate to. Unfortunately, during their time of need and as they try to rehome all the animals they are currently taking care of, Qatar residents have continued to leave dogs at the shelter. In another post on Facebook, the team said, “We CAN NOT take any more in. PLEASE help us by taking responsibility for your own pets. So, head down to the shelter on the 3rd and help by grabbing a bargain or even giving a home to one of their animals. It’s free entry but the QAWS crew always appreciate donations of Purina dog and cat food! GO: Call 5539 6074. Visit www.qaws.org for a map to the premises.
