I’m not a fan of LinkedIn. I imagine it to be a den of sycophantic suits that I don’t really feel part of. They email me all the time, however, offering to sell me some extra special level of seeing even more of LinkedIn for a low cost subscription. I just don’t get it. You’ve seen the elephant trunk graphic, right? I’d rather buy a completely useless blue tick from Elon.

H

owever, sometimes something does jump out. This month I was sent the usual opportunity to check out the latest congratulatory LinkedIn content and noticed someone commenting on a post with a surprising statistic. Research by the accounting firm EY has revealed that only 33% of UK financial services directors appointed in 2023 were female, down from 61% in 2022. It’s not exactly the ‘Look what this childhood celebrity looks like now’ level of clickbait, but as we have been putting together our ‘Women in Business’ feature, I clicked. It went on to say that ‘a quarter of financial services firms still have zero women who hold Chair, CEO, CFO or Senior Independent Director roles’. That’s pretty poor.

I’d like to hope that, as a progressive jurisdiction, we buck that trend within our financial services-led employment landscape. If the women featured in this edition are anything to go by, it feels like we’re leading a charge against that trend. With leading figures in finance, law, tech, beauty, retail, and even decorating, it’s an inspiring cross-section of examples of women taking leading roles.

Another avenue in which women often take the lead is in the planning of a wedding. Our annual Bridal Bible is also within these pages, featuring an A-Z of local wedding-focused content and a selection of wedding profiles to examine for inspiration ahead of planning your big day.

We’re a little late to the game of 2024 at Gallery, but with Valentine’s Day on the horizon as we go to print, we’re sending love to one and all.

FLYING T H E FLAG , BY MAI L. Jersey Post is proud to announce the issue of six new Post & Go stamps featuring the iconic Flag of Jersey, scheduled to be released on the 15th February. In 2014, the Flag of Jersey made its first appearance on a Post & Go issue. Ten years later, the Jersey Flag will showcase an updated design featuring the new monarch, His Majesty King Charles III.

asdf Food Bank February at L’Horizon The team at L’Horizon Beach Hotel & Spa have launched ‘Food Bank February’ in a bid to help islanders feed their families this winter and support a local charity at the same time. Staff and members of the Health Club at the AA Four Red Star hotel are collecting a whole host of non-perishable items throughout the month for the hotel’s chosen charity, Brighter Futures.

Brighter Futures have seen more and more demand for their services as some islanders contend with the cost of living. They are currently supporting more than 150 families every week and have been appealing to islanders to help fill their larder at the HQ The Bridge, which is accessed when clients are in need. Donations of canned foods, rice, pasta, tea, coffee, toiletries, nappies, wipes, and other items can be dropped off to the Spa at L’Horizon for the team to pass on.

They are also on the lookout for any nutritious additions to fill school lunchboxes, such as cartons of juice, cereal bars, boxes of raisins and rice cakes. Sarah Nibbs, Fundraising, Events and Partnerships Manager from Brighter Futures added, “The two months after Christmas are always very challenging. We remain very grateful to Hand Picked Hotels for their ongoing kindness to us and the families we support.

Helping us to fill our larder is a really practical way to make a difference to our most vulnerable client families at the time when they need us most.”

The team at L’Horizon are committed to helping support Brighter Futures in any way they can and helped make Christmas extra special when both members and staff donated dozens of toys to their gift appeal and the hotel hosted a quiz night and members raffle and auction which raised £1,800 for the charity.

Jersey’s flag has had an interesting history.

Unofficially, a plain red saltire had been used since at least the 1830s. A 1906 letter by the Bailiff of Jersey, described the flag as 'the red St Andrew's cross on white ground,' stating it was used to signal the neutrality of the Channel Islands during wars between England and France. The crest of Jersey was added in the 1980s to help distinguish it further.

Post & Go, a self-service postage stamp system, was first introduced by the Royal Mail in 2008 and later adopted by Jersey Post as the next evolution of self-adhesive stamps.

Since December 2023, the Royal Mail is no longer issuing Post & Go stamps, while Jersey Post aims to continue the annual issues and overprints.

The Flag of Jersey Post & Go stamps and philatelic stamp products such as First Day Covers and Presentation Packs will be available from the Jersey post offices at Broad Street, St Helier and Rue Des Pres, St Saviour on issue day.

JT add to defibrillator network A further two emergency heart starting devices have been added to the network of defibrillators in St Helier. The public access defibrillators are outside JT’s headquarters at the Forum in Grenville Street and at the former JT shop in Minden Place.

Working with the Jersey Heart Support Group, the two Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) join a network of more than 80 distinctive yellow and green cabinets in prominent places around the island, that includes parish halls, Jersey Zoo, the Liberation Station and opposite the public entrance to the States building. Derren Le Breton Glover, Property and Health and Safety Manager, from JT, said: “Having a large network of Public Access Defibrillators provides reassurance that life-saving emergency equipment is readily available if needed. Knowing the location of a defibrillator can be the difference between life and death and with more of them in prominent known locations, members of the public can get to them or be informed by the emergency services where the nearest portable machine can be found. We are delighted to help expand and improve the network so that these vital devices can be accessed quickly and easily.” The Jersey Heart Support Group started installing AEDs in public areas a decade ago and has relied on donations and sponsorship to expand the network to over 80 today. They join those already available in workplaces that are also known to the emergency services, but more of those could be made accessible to the public.

In 2021, Frankie welcomed her baby boy into the world and turned her focus to motherhood and after a two year hiatus from music, her first release of 2024’s ‘Never Used To Cry’ sees Frankie Davies return to her best. Tears of Joy

Local singer-songwriter, Frankie Davies, is back in Jersey for a night at the Blue Note. She has an intimate and acoustic evening planned to celebrate the release of new music. She’ll be sharing the stories behind new and old favourites, transporting listeners through both painful and joyful moments in her life.Frankie’s distinctive vocalsand storytelling will resonate with fans of Chris Stapleton, Brandi Carlile and Caitlyn Smith.

Frankie now lives in the west of Cornwall and has been championed by Bob Harris, with a plethora of BBC Radio 2 plays aswell aslive radio performances.

Frankie has also visited Nashville on many occasions to write and perform.

Her most notable performance was at the international showcase at CMA Fest, as well as touring with some of the biggest names in country music, including Chris Young , Maddie & Tae, Charlie Worsham and The Shires.

In 2018 Frankie released her debut album ‘Wherever I Go’, it gained critical praise and national airplay as well as major playlist support from Spotify. It’s an album that wholly represents who Frankie is as an artist and songwriter, pushing different genre lines and exploring a little further outside Country and Americana.

Most of us think a winter sea swim as challenge enough. How about fully submerging yourself in the icy water and making this underwater world an environment in which to capture subjects for your photographic creativity?

N

icola Miskin studied photography but didn’t pursue it as s career, instead returning to it once she discovered sea swimming just before Lockdown. The results are the ethereal dancing shapes and colours seen above and overleaf. We asked her about the cold, featuring on new Jersey Post stamps and Dryrobes.

You've been cold water swimming for six years, does it get easier?

Mentally yes , but physically no. I still find it hardest as the temperature drops at the end of summer, the anticipation of the cold to come!

How long do you stay in - do you need special wetsuits and equipment? I don’t time my swims, it depends on so many factors. You have to do what’s right for you on that day. Never stay in to be competitive, that's dangerous. I guess I did that a bit in the beginning and it can feel awful afterwards and that's not the point of it. I wear 2mm gloves when the sea goes below 10 degrees, I can still use my camera with thin gloves. I also wear boots in the winter which help when the sand or pebbles are freezing on the walk to the sea. And that's it, just a swim suit.

Did you have a background in photography? were there new techniques to learn? I did a degree in Applied Photography many years ago at the University

of Westminster, but haven’t incorporated photography in my working career. When I started sea swimming in 2018 I was given a battered third-hand underwater camera.

As soon as I started to take photos below the surface I discovered something special and my creativity came back. It took some time and many cameras to achieve the images I wanted. The sea is forever moving and sometimes moving fast, the subject is moving and I am moving, it can be challenging. I learnt that just below the water’s surface the light is amazing and the reflections on the water’s surface create something very exciting to photograph.

Where is your favourite place to capture underwater Jersey? I really don’t have a

favourite. We are so lucky in Jersey, all the bays are stunning. I get different images wherever I go. The northern pebble bays are very blue and the southern sandy bays have a greener, softer look. Each bay is unique and beautiful.

Your work is featuring on some Jersey Stamps. Philately will get you everywhere, how did that come about?

Bernie Martin had just had her fabulous Lockdown Birds featured in a stamp edition.

She messaged me and asked if she could show Jersey Post my Instagram feed. I guess it was perfect timing as Europa Stamp had just announced the 2023 theme would be Underwater Fauna & Flora. They contacted me and I created a gallery of potential images for them to view my work on my website.

With the sad outbreak of war in Ukraine, Europa Stamp changed the theme to Peace for 2023. So the Underwater Fauna and Flora was moved to 2024.

Where is the best place for a post swim-and-shoot coffee-and-cake?

I swim so much that I never do it! We always have a thermos of herbal tea for an instant warm up then I want to get home to process my photos. But if I did have free time Plemont cafe would be my favourite, great coffee and cakes.

You're probably one of the only people to legitimately need a Dryrobe. This week I've seen two on the school run and one going through an airport... make me a case for or against Dryrobes beyond the beach boundary....

They are absolutely amazing for post-swim, they are very warm and wind and water proof. Other than on one very very cold north coast walk; an outdoor night film viewing in the Royal Sq and a freezing Winter trip to the Outer Hebrides I have never worn mine anywhere else but after a swim. So the airport sighting could have been going to the Outer Hebrides?! I guess the school run wearer could have just swum? After a really cold swim you want to keep it on even if you need to pop to the supermarket. I think with the popularity of cold water swimming now we have to accept they are here to stay :-)

Shooting for the stars.

We first met local photographer Cameron Aird when he was spending time taking images from the sky as Above and Beyond Visuals. Last year Cam swapped the screen of his drone to the stage as got the opportunity to go on tour with classical crossover band, Il Divo. Cam shared some of the images he captured and tells us about his experience.

“

I’m a huge believer in the butterfly effect and how certain moments can effect future ones. Earlier this year I attended a wedding in France in the hope of creating and capturing the perfect wedding day - not realising I would have the opportunity of a life time right round the corner. After several chats with the touring manager of classical cross over band - Il Divo, a few weeks later I found out that they wanted me on their next tour with them to tour around Europe, Australia and the US for the last part of 2023!

Traveling the world whilst doing a job that I love was something I dreamt of whilst at college, but never thought it’d be something I’d have the opportunity to do this early on in my career.

Travelling, however, comes with its hardships and stress that comes with it. I would say that the biggest challenge for me whilst on tour with Il Divo was, of course, making sure I was producing the best work I could, but travelling everyday keeping up with the basics like hydration and adequate sleep levels to get me through the tour.

Australia was especially difficult with jet lag.

A tour highlight for me was walking through the streets of New York City with the band capturing content. With the mix of the hustle and bustle of NYC with the few hours that we had walking around it was enjoyable to experience this with such a talented group of singers.

The four band members David Miller, Sebastian Izambard, Steven Labrie & Urs Buhler were a delight to work with, not to mention the stress they have whilst travelling too, you come to realise that everyone is experiencing the same emotions, tiredness and hardships - which makes it that little bit easier to understand one and other.

What I found particularly difficult was being present and capturing key moments, but without that ‘paparazzi-like’ presence for the band.

At the end of the day I am there to do a job but respecting their boundaries is equally important.

A tour highlight for me was walking through the streets of New York City with the band, capturing content. With the mix of the hustle and bustle of NYC in the few hours that we had walking around it was enjoyable to be with such a talented group of singers.

It was also amazing to experience each show night by night while Il Divo sang classics within the classical music industry, but also see them modernise their work with a new album out in February”.

A SURFACE FOR MEMORY Following her win at the 2022 Summer Exhibition, last month marked a watershed moment for Debbie Crane as her first solo exhibition, ‘Open Hands’, opened at CCA Galleries International. We asked her about her work and process.

What gets you up in the morning; whats your morning routine?

I ‘wake up’ in the sea most mornings as the tide is at the foot of my bed. So that makes for a zippy start to the day.

Your work is very vibrant, it must take a real positive energy.

I think the energy of the work comes from my pleasure in seeking the vitality and essence of the subject. If you paint what you love it can be both seen and felt. There was a beautiful moment at the opening of the exhibition when someone sniffed my painting, exclaiming he could smell the sea. I’ll take that!

When we asked you for advice when you were last in Gallery, you said 'Do more of what makes you happy' - what has been making you happy of late?

Painting keeps me happy, so as you can see, I’ve done lots of that. Of course it’s not always an easy process, but it’s where I find myself. We have a new family member, a rescue dog called Nellie, so lots of long walks around our beautiful island helps me stay inspired.

Your subject matter is diverse. What inspires your choice in what to paint?

My canvas is the surface for my memory, emotion and response; so most of what I find in my every day will appear.

You won the summer exhibition in 2022, did that change your outlook as an artist?

Having the opportunity to see much of my work framed and hanging in a gallery has certainly been very affirming.

Paintings are a lot like children, messy at times, tough but mostly a joy. Then you frame them and put them out into the world to be enjoyed.

There is a series of four paintings showing hands at work, and the series is concluded by the painting Open Hands which references the act of both giving and receiving.

This exhibition has led me through the whole cycle of being an artist and I have really enjoyed working alongside CCA to put on a show I'm really proud of.

You've built a studio at home, set the scene; what is on the radio while you work and what are you snacking on?

My studio is a haven at the top of the garden hidden under a giant willow tree. With the doors open I can work to the sound of birdsong and a bubbling brook, the perfect soundtrack to paint to. A well-trodden path back to the house for regular tea and biscuit breaks gives me the distance away from the work so I can return again with fresh eyes.

Your new exhibition is called 'Open Hands' - what's the story behind the title?

Capturing the human form from life is a discipline in observation and feeds all my work. I find hands especially difficult but equally fascinating to paint because they are our creative tools. It’s always great to hear stories of reinvention. It seems to be a constant source of conversation as people consider a new chapter or alternative future, only to remain on the road well travelled and in their everyday lives. When James de la Cloche got in touch, it was great to hear about how he’s embraced a new life, calling, and purpose.

Hi James, it’s been a while. I think last time we had What is the funniest experience you’ve had while you in Gallery you were still in Property! Give us capturing our trunk-wielding friends? the brief story of what’s happened since...

That’s a big question, but essentially, on my first visit in 2001, I got into insight meditation, and that led to a huge change in how I saw the world and a complete change in my personal values. I wanted to live the artist’s life through my photography, as I believe that is the way to reach full potential. I was given a talent that had to develop. It’s been an incredible journey, and the path has never been easy, but I regard this as book two of my life, and the experience has been, and continues to be, amazing.

You were always a photographer, but clearly you’ve now found your niche, how did that process happen?

For years, despite my best efforts, I found it hard to find any jobs. In the first year, I had no shoots; it was very tough.

Eventually, Chinese tourists and a few weddings got me through. It provided some money but not so much, and, around four and a half years in, I had exhausted all of my funds and had to sell my car and motorcycle. Bizarrely, I never lost faith that things would work out. Around that time, I made my first contact with Chai Lai Orchid, and that was the start of my journey creating portraits of people with the amazing rescue elephants.

During a honeymoon shoot, the guest requested a beautiful floral arch and elephants to be in the background while they read some vows to each other. Chai Lai prepared everything, and it looked very beautiful, with hundreds of white roses and orchids and lots of palm leaves woven in. As the couple started to read their vows, the mother and baby elephant were being surprisingly well behaved, munching bananas in the background, until Mobley, the 4-year-old baby girl, suddenly decided that she would like to try some of the flowers. I think you can picture the rest!

The project started as a cafe at an elephant camp, which soon made her want to improve the lives of the elephants. Chai Lai now is home to 18 rescue elephants of their own.

What can you tell us about that organisation?

Life has obviously changed a great deal since you left Chai Lai Orchid is an inspiring non-profit resort. Founded Jersey. Tell us three things you’ve learnt…

by Alexa Pam to fund her foundation, “Daughters Rising,” it is all about anti-trafficking, empowerment, and education for ethnic minority women and girls, many of whom are refugees from Myanmar. They support around 50 girls, paying all of their education and living costs while they are at university, as well as supporting the local Karen community that surrounds the resort. The project started as a cafe at an elephant camp, which soon made her want to improve the lives of the elephants. Chai Lai is now home to 18 rescue elephants of their own.

They say ‘never work with children or animals’.

Do Elephants shatter that myth?

I remember those very words from my grandfather, and it often makes me chuckle! Elephants are the easy part. All the elephants at Chai Lai have been surrounded by people all of their lives, and when they are treated as kindly as they are here, they are kind, gentle, and always inspiring. I am in my 8th year of working with them; I know their habits, can feel their moods, and I love them and their wonderful manners dearly. As for children, they often start off afraid.

But, through patience, humour, and guidance, I always get the shots I need.

Kozielska’s piece, Anatomy of Change, tells ‘an abstract tale of self-actualization and the transformative process of reaching a new stage in life’. With Kozielska’s signature emotive style, the story unfolds not as events in a timeline, but as the intimate and unseen milestones of a private journey. CHANNEL ISLANDS CONTEMPORARY ART SHOW LAUNCH Arthouse Jersey at Capital House 18th January

The crowd who attended this launch was possibly the most lively of any we’ve seen at Arthouse Jersey’s Capital House. The diverse exhibition featured 19 artists drawn from an open call last year to both Channel Islands-based and international artists. Produced & curated

by ArtHouse Jersey and Art for Guernsey, in association with Les Champs Libres in Rennes,

five artists from Guernsey, seven from Jersey and seven from other countries around the world, including Germany, South Africa, Northern Ireland, Russia, Moldova and Switzerland all told stories that had association with our islands across a range of media and artforms. The exhibition runs until February 25th, go and take a look.

Arthouse Jersey launches a series short creative courses with talented local & international artists ArtHouse Jersey is teaming up with talented local and international art tutors to offer a series of exciting drawing and painting courses across a range of mediums, responding to the drama and movement found in coastal landscapes.

These varied one and two-day courses will take place at ArtHouse Jersey’s HQ at the historic Greve de Lecq Barracks and will cater to all abilities, from curious beginners to established artists honing their craft. The first course to take place is Painting with Oils: Urban Landscapes with Dutch art tutor: Casper Strietman (pictured left). There are two options available; a weekend course on Saturday 2 & Sunday 3 March between 10am to 5pm, or a weekday course on Thursday 14 & Friday 15 March between 10am to 5pm.

Casper likes to draw and paint buildings as a theme of a living space, emphasising their social function and how they are perceived; a lighthouse carries a sense of force and drama to it. The course explores how this perception affects your composition, the characteristics in which you apply, thin out or erase paint. It can influence the colours you use; the light and darkness you provide. This course caters to all entry levels.

Students will learn how to make studies to inform the creation of paintings in the studio.

There will be analysis of the theme and a build up of composition, aiming to pick out the focal point in the work. For the more experienced, the potential of a storyline will be explored and how to give a hint of conceptual input.

In this course participants will respond to the energy, colour and dynamic compositions found in the buildings of Greve de Lecq. All catering and art materials included, plus you take home your very own 50-page sketchbook. The cost is £150 per person, per day.

The Victorian House adjoins Jersey Museum & Art Gallery and is one of the finest examples of a 19th century townhouse in Jersey. The house has been fully restored so that it appears exactly as it would have done in 1861 when it was home to a prosperous family in Victorian St Helier. Civil ceremonies are held in the beautiful gas-lit drawing room and the museum courtyard and gardens are available for drinks. The house is also perfect for an intimate reception.

Woosah! A week before your wedding set aside a morning to sort everything out, so that you can properly enjoy the run up to your wedding day knowing that everything is done.

Finding out about wedding traditions from yours and your partner’s family heritage can be a fun way to make your wedding more personal. Some of them also say they bring long, loving and wealthy marriages - so well worth a shot!

Where did you get married?

We chose St Ouens Parish Church as it felt very close to our hearts. Joe has always had connections with St Ouens through football and his work. For me this was the most beautiful church and Ian (the Reverend) is absolutely fantastic. The church also has an organ which we really wanted for the music.

It honestly was a dream and an honour to get married there.

Tunes

For the Music we had Jessica Lloyd together with her band, she was with us from the church through to the evening and she really went above and beyond for us.

Reception

Our reception was at St George’s School. The amazing Annelise from Marquee Solutions helped us organise the marquee. We had Sam’s Hog Roast as the caterer which was out of this world. For the bar we hired the Jersey Bar Tender who, together with his staff, really made our day unforgettable. We had an open bar and amazing cocktails all night.

The Jersey Toastmaster coordinated the day, Rupert was a godsend organising everyone, which allowed for the day to run smoothly W W W.G A L L E R Y. J E

Wow factor moments

After the first set of the band we had fireworks by Starburst Fireworks! The display was honestly out of this world and cannot recommend them enough! We then danced the night away.

Stationary

Beth at Paper Vows did all our stationary and everything was so personalised and beautiful.

We also had Pretty Little Letters do the lovely signs for our tables and a welcome sign.

Video

We had the team from Slingshot create our video. They were absolutely fantastic. We had two operators on the day, one with myself and one with my husband, in order to capture as much as possible. The videos from our wedding are incredible, they have captured every single important detail and watching it really takes us right back to the day so we can relive it all over again.

The dress

I got my dress from The Bridal Boutique and my husband had his suit made by them as well. Caroline was so helpful during the whole process. She listened to what I wanted and found my dream dress. Caroline has a great @GALLERYMAGAZINE

eye for detail and made my husband a bespoke suit which he now has forever to remind him of our special day. We also rented the ushers suits from there.

Flowers

My flowers were done by the wonderful Ffi at Bella Fiori. I was very specific about what I wanted and she delivered to perfection. We changed the table plans not long before the wedding and she was so accommodating. No job was too big for her even after I kept adding more and more to our flower decorations. She came very promptly on the day to deliver all the flowers and my bridesmaids and I were in awe, her flowers were beautiful.

Photos

Our photographer was Andy Le Gresley. We picked him because his portfolio of wedding photos is honestly the best and the photos are timeless. He made us feel so comfortable

and made our experience even more special.

From the initial meetings to discussing where we are going to do our photos Andy was so helpful and listened to everything we wanted for our special day. During our photo sessions he came up with incredible shot ideas and all we had to do was just enjoy ourselves. When we look through our photos we are taken right back to the most amazing day of our lives. The images he captured are so real and natural.

I was so excited. The main thing that we both loved and the most important to us was having all our family and friends there. All the people that we love so dearly and who made our day what it was. The way our cheeks were hurting as the smiles didn’t leave our faces all day long.

That’s when you know you have had the best day of your life.

Personal touches

Get dance lessons for your first dance it makes such a difference and it also looks amazing in videos/photos. We did ours with Danielle at Just Move Jersey. The night before your wedding just switch off and relax. What’s done is done and what will be, will be. You have done all the hard work of planning for so long now it’s time to enjoy it. Get in the right frame of mind and just be 100% present on your day. You will thank yourself forever!

For our table numbers we had funny photos of us as kids and I loved having the polaroid camera and the guest book where people could leave messages for us.

Favourite bit

It’s hard to pick one thing. The first thing that pops to mind is seeing my husband for the very first time when I was walking down the aisle. I remember I just wanted to run to him

Where did you get married?

We chose not to get married in a church as we didn’t want a traditional wedding. We were very lucky that a family friend allowed us to hire and use their field for the big day as well as a second day of celebrations the day after!

What did you do for your reception?

We had our reception drinks done by Jersey Kitchen accompanied by live music from The County Kings band soloist who played the acoustic guitar, harmonica and sang (a band we flew in through our company 3rd Above Entertainment). We had a summer wedding

so our reception was hosted outside in the stunning Wills Tent we hired from Viberts.

Anne from Viberts was great, she was there to answer every silly question we put in emails, gave us example spreadsheets and even let us look through all their available decor. Nigel and team (from Viberts) were onsite checking every detail and ensuring that everything ran smoothly for our big day, we were so pleased with how brilliant the marquee looked.

Photos?

We used Becky Le Brun. We’ve been lucky to work with Becky lots with our Entertainment

company (3rd Above Entertainment) and we love her work and her energy so it was a nobrainer that we wanted her for the wedding.

We’re both ex professional performers and so is Becky so it’s another thing we connected on.

The dress ?

I got my dress at JS Couture in London. I was worried that I wouldn’t get that moment when I knew the dress was the one as I’ve worn some pretty epic costumes and dresses over the years with shows I performed in. However as soon as I tried my dress on I just knew and I didn’t want to take it off!

We used Andrew Blooms for our flowers, he’s just incredible! We came across Andrew’s work when we provided entertainment at a wedding a year previously and immediately booked in to have a meeting with him. Andrew understood our vision and made it even more amazing than we could have ever dreamed.

We even had our bouquet and button hole flowers preserved and framed so we can keep them forever.

Having our French Bulldogs walk down the aisle as ring bearers! We’re lucky that we have so many talented friends and family who created things for us such as our wooden bar, the custom vinyl initials and date for our dance floor and wooden name places just to name a few.

What was your favourite bit?

Having all of our friends & family all together in one place to celebrate. The energy of the day was amazing and the guests were such a big part of that.

Any tips?

Make your day flow! This was a big thing for us. We didn’t want any stops/starts or dips in the energy and flow. Plan things to keep the guests entertained between dinner courses.

Where did you get married?

Tom and I were married by Rev Geoff Houghton at Trinity Church. I'd always wanted to get married in a church and Trinity is a gorgeous space, beautiful stained glass and simple white walls. It was also the only choice for us really as Tom's mum Birthe is buried in the cemetery there. Our florist Clara from Wilde Thyme made us a bouquet matching the wedding flowers to put on her grave. Geoff spoke of Birthe at the start of our service - the deep connection made for a very moving wedding ceremony.

Where was the reception?

For our reception Marquee Solutions set up a beautiful marquee in the lower garden of

Domaine des Vaux at the back of the stone farmhouse. They kitted it out with fairy lights and disco ball and luckily because the weather played ball too, we had the sides of the marquee up for much of the day. It meant the garden was branching into the marquee and it felt like we were in 'The Secret Garden'. That's what we loved so much about Domaine des Vaux, it gave this gorgeous, intimate country garden wedding vibe.

Bitter & Twisted served our guests Aperol spritzes and beers from places we love were also on offer - including Stinky Bay - and our prosecco was served in 120 individual glasses we picked up from Acorn and Jersey Hospice, which gave it a bit of a fun, retro feel.

Tom is an illustrator under his pseudonym 'Elvenso Illustration' so he designed our seating plans, table names - which we named after bars we think serve the best espresso martinis - and menus.

For our name places we used miniature versions of Tom's 'Hungryman' illustration, which I had bought as a postcard from the cafe a year before I met Tom! But, despite being an illustrator, he's no calligrapher, so our friend Laura, owner of Little Wren in the Market, wrote the names in for us. We decided on yellow gingham for our long table runners and our friend Kayleigh Wells lovingly made runners for us. I also fell in love with the embroidery of Cressida Jamieson on Instagram and commissioned her to create a yellow flower design, LIFE & ST YLE IN JERSEY

and this, as well as our initials and the date was stitched onto all of our napkins.

Favours

Our favours were a much more DIY 'Blue Peter' affair! As Tom is half Danish we filled small bottles with alcoholic schnapps and tied a small Danish flag around the top with the word ‘Skul' - that was our 'Drink me' - for our 'Eat me', we had miniature Tiptree jams with our names printed on the back, because we live in Essex, near where the jam is made.

cious meats and cheeses, followed by chicken and Jersey beef cooked on an open fire, served with Jersey tomatoes and Royals for main. We adored the informal, sharing way this is served on the long tables. Later, in the evening, he even served Danish-style hotdogs alongside his famous woodfired pizzas.

What about your music?

Guitarist and vocalist Nic Dinney accompanied by singer Anna Geary treated us to some jazz and Motown numbers and also got the party started later with our first dance, their take on Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell's 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough', which got everybody dancing. After their set Sam Marks took the party up a notch with a stint on the decks,

followed by a section of decks and saxophone (he does both at the same time!!!), which our guests loved! One of my favourite memories was a conga line behind Sam on the sax, through the marquee.

Who did you use for photography?

Holly Smith was our photographer and I couldn't recommend her more highly. Tom knows Holly from their school days, so we knew we loved her natural and beautiful photos. The photo of us in the wind in our dressing gowns on the top of Kempt Tower, where we were staying, are some of my favourites.

She even went with Tom and I's plan to go down to The Hungryman, after our ceremony, for a few pictures. That was a brilliant mo@GALLERYMAGAZINE

ment! On August Bank Holiday Saturday, Philly & her team at the cafe got the queue to step aside so we could have our photo taken pretending to order at the hatch! The crowd even cheered us - it was gorgeous.

Who did your flowers?

When I looked at Wilde and Thyme's Instagram page, I knew Clara was the florist for me. She understood what I wanted, despite my clumsy explanation and when I told her I was toying with the idea of yellow and pink, but was worried it would look like rhubarb and custard, she got so excited. She made me passionate about our colour palette and brave enough to step away from muted whites and pinks - and reassured me they wouldn't

be in the same tonal group as Bagpuss! I was absolutely blown away by our stunning flowers, from the gorgeous bouquets, to the delicate flower crown for our flower girl, the jam jars filled with buds on the tables - it was all beautiful.

What personal touches did you add?

I think the Trinity Choir is up there, I love a good hymn and them singing 'Shine Jesus Shine' (a school favourite) alongside our congregation of friends and family was so uplifting. We got a lot of compliments on the neon sign we attached to the bar which said 'The Normans' - that will go up in our home (once we've painted the walls) soon! I

asked Flour to create a vintage piped, pink coloured, orange and lemon flavoured cake, with cherries and 'Just Married' on top - they more than understood the assignment and it was insane. And tasted just as good as it looked, served with Jersey cream.

Any tips?

Start planning as early as you can - I needed time, as I did it bit by bit. Trust your suppliers - you've chosen them for a reason and they've done this so many times. And, on the day just embrace and enjoy it, let the small things go, you can't change them, you've done all the hard work. And remember it is about you and your partner - enjoy each other (if you find the time!).

LAUREN RADLEY LAUREN RADLEY ILLUSTRATION

Lauren Radley is a freelance illustrator and a designer of beautiful, fun, colourful prints, stationery and other illustrated loveliness for your home. Lauren graduated from Kingston university in 2009 with a BA(hons) in Illustration and Animation, and has been lucky enough to be working freelance ever since (with a brief stint as a noodle waitress!). Here she tells us more about her work, her career and her Genuine Jersey products.

For those of us who might not know your work, can you tell us a little bit about it?

I run a business creating fun, whimsical and colourful artworks; a lot of maps and location or place specific art, but lots other fun stuff too.

We produce art prints, greetings cards, stationery and homeware.

I have been a freelance illustrator since 2009 so my client work can vary from anything from kids books to editorial magazine work, from murals to postage stamps, which include a set for Jersey Post which you may have used yourselves.

Where do you get your inspiration for new pieces of work?

I love creating maps and artwork of places that I love or places that are interesting to me, so thinking of different ways of doing that and showing a place in a ‘different’ way, is always exciting. I love how illustrated maps can tell stories, and how painting a ‘landscape’ picture of a scene, of a beach or bay for example, can be fun and imaginative and colourful. I guess you could say I’m inspired by my surroundings, by interesting places and cities, and also storytelling.

We’ve seen the incredible mural you were commissioned to create to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Société Jersiaise (it’s on Pier Road for those who haven’t spotted it yet).

Can you tell us a little bit about the piece?

Thank you! Well it was certainly a labour of love! Over 200 illustrated tiles; about 50 patterned and 150 detailed depictions of Jersey and the Société to commemorate their anniversary year. I hand illustrated the tiles and then had them produced onto ceramic tiles. It was an amazing job to work on though; I learnt so much!

We absolutely loved seeing your post about your work for Coffee Republic, any other brands you’d like to work with, or do?

That was one of the first commissions I did really; about ten years ago now! I’ve since worked with quite a few cool clients, including The National Trust, Cancer Research, Macmillan publishing, Waitrose, and the Telegraph to name a few! I don’t think I have any specific brands I’d like to work for but I’d like to work with a publishing house called Noisy Crow, who create some beautiful kids books, at some point in the future!

Last year you welcomed the arrival of your third child, how are you finding balancing work and family?

Well I have a very supportive husband, who also happens to be my business partner! So we very much juggle the business and kid life together. We also hired our first employee last year which was an exciting step for us and has been a big help already.

Any big plans for 2024?

Lots!! I have so many new designs coming your way, and we’re hoping to expand our product range too; mugs, and new stationery products are in the pipeline for this year which I’m excited about!

If we wanted to commission you to create a piece for us, how would that work?

Just get in touch! Always open to chatting through briefs and ideas with people, and love working on interesting new commissions. For me, the variety of work is what’s so great about being an illustrator.

Following a degree in Furniture and Product Design, local furniture designer Gigi Cooke is now manufacturing her unique design, Archie, in Jersey. We got Gigi (and Archie) into the studio for a show and tell.

What has your journey been in design so far?

My design journey has been relatively brief but incredibly rewarding. From a young age, I knew that I wanted to delve into the world of design and craftsmanship. After completing my degree in Furniture and Product Design at Bath Spa University, I had the exciting opportunity to exhibit my creation, Archie, at different exhibitions in London during the summer. What made you want to work with wood?

Wood stands out as an incredible resource abundant in the UK, boasting remarkable versatility. The UK hosts a diverse array of wood types. As a natural resource, timber exudes a soothing and calming quality, setting it apart. During my time at school, timber was readily accessible, sparking my fascination with the material. Since then, my journey has been learning more about the different characteristics timber has to offer by exploring different processes that can be used to manipulate timber into different forms and textures.

Whose furniture or designs inspire you?

The inspiration for my furniture primarily stems from the materials themselves and the exploration of various processes that can be applied to manipulate them. In the case of Archie, the design was particularly influenced by the joining process and the distinctive characteristics in Ash and Oak. Drawing inspiration from a diverse range of sources, I find creative sparks in architecture, art, nature, and the works of other designers. Archie was also inspired by the Barbican in London, particularly its brutalist architectural style characterised by striking geometrical shapes. Additionally, the innovative approach of designer Jan Hendzel, who utilises different wood types and grain directions to showcase the inherent beauty of the material, has also played a significant role in influencing my designs.

Tell us about the concept behind Archie....

Archie encompasses all my beliefs and vision for what I stand for as a designer. Archie highlights the beauty of the timber the UK has to offer by showcasing the materiality of English oak and ash. Archie is a playful approach to versatile, contemporary furniture, mirroring its unique and arching silhouette, from which it draws its name.

In addition, Archie seamlessly transforms from a stylish stool, ideal for providing extra seating, into a functional coffee table that enhances the coziness of gatherings. It also effortlessly transitions into a chic side table, perfect for holding your favourite reads. This multifunctional design not only reflects my commitment to aesthetics and versatility but also represents the essence of my brand's philosophy – combining form, functionality, and a deep appreciation for the natural beauty of sustainable materials.

You're manufacturing locally in Jersey, is it challenging to do so here?

Manufacturing in Jersey has proven to be a seamless and straightforward process. Partnering with JH Carpentry for the production of Archie has been not only uncomplicated but also highly rewarding. After conducting some research, I reached out to James via email, and the proximity of their workshop, just 1km away, was a definite advantage. Initially, I commissioned one Archie for an exhibition and was impressed by the exceptional quality and craftsmanship demonstrated by JH Carpentry.

When the decision was made to offer Archie for sale, it was only natural to collaborate with James and his team for a Limited Edition run. The primary logistical challenge lies in shipping the materials, but I have managed this by leveraging the same timber suppliers I used during my university years.

My vision for my furniture business is centred around creating a responsibly manufactured and sourced furniture collection. The ultimate dream involves establishing my own studio and workshop, fostering a collaborative environment where various creatives come together, forming a hub of creation. I aspire to design, experiment, and see my products showcased in stores across the UK. My dream job is to engage in collaborative ventures with different designers and artists, pooling our talents to craft a collection that not only exhibits innovation but also tells a unique story.

When it comes to commissions, the process is always enjoyable. Working with clients who share a creative vision is gratifying. Designing a piece that is appreciated and oneof-a-kind adds a special layer of satisfaction to the creative journey.

My company and brand, Gigi Cooke, is dedicated to the design and production of long-lasting furniture with a commitment to sustainability, addressing environmental, social, and economic aspects. With Archie, 5% of the proceeds will be donated to Jersey Trees For Life, which is an amazing charity whose mission is to inspire, facilitate and promote the planting, conservation and protection of trees and hedgerows while educating our community about their environmental, ecological and social importance.

No home would be complete without windows but, with more architects opting to embrace the structural qualities of glass in their designs, glazing is being placed firmly at the heart of modern home building. The experts at Clear Living tell us more…

T

hroughout time, glass has protected us, adorned us, but, until relatively recently, it wasn’t considered for its structural properties. Always, glass sat firmly in the domain of cladding or curtain wall, whereas structure was all about steel. Now, though, the design world has woken up to the qualities of glass as a structural material, extending the palette of the architect and enhancing builds in ways never before seen. So what is structural glazing? In short, it’s where glass becomes an intrinsic part of the structure, where load-bearing capabilities are as, if not more, important than its aesthetic appeal.

The traditional solid wall dividing inside and outside was superseded by transparent assemblies and the ‘free flowing space’ was born.

Interior Designers Bryony Richardson got in touch to let us know about a feature she’d had published in Homes and Gardens - on none other than her own home. When we saw the photos, we had to feature this fantastic interior design tour de force. With its vibrant decor, it’s an inspiration for anyone with a white wall in their house. We asked about her approach....

Hi Bryony, so you've been getting Jersey property in national media, excellent, tell us about the project....

Yes, Homes and Gardens' January 2024 featured my own home - Le Rocher - an extensive refurbishment I embarked on with my husband four years ago. I sought to create a space that inspires me, and a joyful home in which to bring up our two boys. The house is just up the road from the St Catherine’s lifeboat station and, before we bought it, I had not the slightest inkling of the change in lifestyle the house would bring with it – year-round sea swimming for example.

It's a Georgian house with high ceilings and enormous windows that drink in the light - it's a wonderful clothes horse for colour so I brought in quite a lot of it!

My father is passionate about art and antiques and my mother was an interior designer. I would spend hours attending auctions and rifling through fabric samples, dreaming up schemes. My professional life has spanned conversion of a barn into a lifestyle and organic farm shop (helped by an EU grant), to a founding Anthropologie UK role, before designing the production suites at a couple of top London post-production houses. KLC School of Design training finally led to work at an award-winning London based interiors studio known for their high-end residential designs. So interior design has been in my DNA all my life and it felt like the natural progression to set up my own studio upon relocating to Jersey seven years ago.

What or who has influenced you the most?

From an early age I noticed the effect that décor can have on people. Growing up, friends’ homes had décor that ranged from sparse and drab, to vibrant and fun, and everything in

Your designs here are incredibly bold and bright, would you say this is your signature approach?

I do love using colour. However, my hallmark approach is to create inviting and expressive spaces that befit the style of a property, and, most importantly, a home for my client to feel in their element. As a result, projects take on many guises. Le Rocher is bold and bright but I also create more neutral schemes, drawing on other design elements, such as texture and lighting. The common link is that I’m always challenging myself to devise considered and atmospheric schemes for my clients that aim to inspire and delight, whilst retaining a deep, personal relevance to them.

What is the most impressive building you've visited, from an interior design perspective?

Villa Necchi Campiglio in Milan. Design is hardwired into the building. Nothing was an afterthought. It is opulent and yet restrained at the same time and so ridiculously classy. It’s also incredible for somewhere to be so identifiably “of its time” and yet somehow still classic and timeless.

What advice would you give to women starting out in business in your industry? (it's our women in business' feature in this edition)

Interior design offers so much more than nicely matching curtains and cushions. Take time to invest in your knowledge base and get some training before embarking on what can be an incredibly enriching and rewarding career path. It will give you the skillset and the confidence to start as you mean to go on.

A project transformation requires a collaborative approach and many skills. Make your views heard at meetings with architects and contractors - without your vision and expertise the project will not reach its true potential.

Invest in some suitable footware – when on a building site, you don’t want to be that woman picking their way through the mud in a pair of heels!

Walking the walk

Michelle Leverington is Partner, Advocate and Head of Property Law at BCR Law. Whether delivering challenging updates on property completions or striding out in the great outdoors with her border Collie, Coco, Michelle puts her best foot forward.

What do you do day-to-day?

I lead BCR Law’s property team, overseeing transactions involving buying and selling houses, client loans, and advising developers.

Do you think there is a benefit to being a female in your industry?

I strongly believe that diversity is a significant asset in any industry.

Different experiences and backgrounds contribute to a richer understanding of issues. Embracing diversity not only enhances the collaborative dynamics within our team but also leads to more innovative and well-rounded solutions for our clients. Ultimately, I see being a female in my industry as an opportunity to make a positive impact and foster a more inclusive and dynamic work environment.

What is the best part of your job?

The most rewarding aspect of my job is the sense of accomplishment that comes with successfully completing a sale or purchase and seeing how happy this makes our clients. The process of buying and selling property can be incredibly stressful. Our team is dedicated to simplifying and streamlining every step, making the experience as straightforward as possible. Seeing families move into new homes and helping first-time buyers step onto the property ladder is incredibly fulfilling.

Is there a female who inspires you?

One female figure who has been an inspiration to me is Betty Boothroyd who presented me with my Open University degree. Coming from a humble background, she crafted an intriguing and impactful career. As the first female Speaker of the House of Commons, Betty Boothroyd serves as a powerful example that anything is possible, irrespective of one's starting point.

Ultimately, I see being a female in my industry as an opportunity to make a positive impact and foster a more inclusive and dynamic work environment.

What do you get up to outside of work?

Outside of work, I regularly attend yoga classes and have a genuine passion for walking. I firmly believe that fresh air and walking play pivotal roles in maintaining my mental health and overall well-being. Adding to the experience of walking, my family and I have a beautiful border collie named Coco, who is now 16 months old.

Most days I take her on walks into town and around the lanes of St Martin and St Saviour. Twice a week she joins me in the office with the property team, bringing lots of joy, and a touch of chaos, to our workspace.

The most challenging part of my role involves delivering the news to a client about a delay in property completion, often due to issues with their property or others in the chain. The property market's inherent turbulence can result in occasional hold-ups, and it can

Leadingby Example Alexandra Cohen is a Senior Associate in the Family Law team of Viberts.

What would an average working day look like?

During a busy week, I tend to start the morning early at around 6am with a couple of hours working from home first thing. This is so I don’t have to stay late as I like to switch off in the evening which I think is very important. I head into the office to start the day with the rest of my team for around 8.45am. The work that I do day to day varies, with most of my work involving financial cases,

divorces and children work. Often, I will be in the Family Court for hearings, or in a private Financial Dispute Resolution hearing (a form of alternative dispute resolution). A big part of my day is training the junior lawyers which I am passionate about. I always make sure that I get out for some lunchtime exercise (either a run or a quick gym session). It clears my head, refreshes me and sets me up for the afternoon.

What attracted you to a career in law and specifically Family law?

To be honest, it was my father that suggested a career in law when I was completing my university applications. I was originally going to apply for maths or forensic science. After my law degree, I came back to Jersey for the summer and took a job at Viberts. I was not intending to stay as long as I did, but I fell in love with the work and being back home in Jersey. I am still here 9 years later and have become more senior over the years.

What are your most significant milestones in your career so far?

Achieving the different levels of qualifications and positions at Viberts have been my big milestones so far. I was admitted as a Solicitor (England & Wales) in 2020 which was a big step after c.5 years of training. At the age of 28, I was sworn in by the Bailiff as an Advocate of the Royal Court. The ceremony was an amazing experience and emphasised the important role that Advocates have in Jersey.

Have you had any female mentors that have helped you?

Rose Colley (Viberts Family Law partner) has trained me pretty much from the start and has been a brilliant mentor. Family law in Jersey is a female dominated area, and it is inspiring to see that most senior family lawyers are women.

What advice would you give women considering a career in law in Jersey?

Don’t overthink the process. There will be times when it feels hard and you want to give up, and there will be times when you feel on top and love it. The training does take time and can be tough, but it is worth it in the end. In terms of the area you want to choose, go with the area of law that feels right for you. You can always change in the future. Family law felt right for me, and I have spent 9 years doing it and still love it.

What are you favourite bits about life with Viberts?

I have also become friends with a lot of my colleagues which adds a personal level to work.

Transforming the workplace for

We chatted to some of Prosperity’s amazing women to find out more about their positive corporate culture and how their careers have developed.

Geraldine Evans is Prosperity’s Chief Operating Officer and co-founder. Following a degree in English Literature and Italian Language and Literature, Geraldine’s first job was on an IT helpdesk for a bank. “I always wanted to be a primary school teacher, but I had a keen interest in using technology to find easier ways to do things. I soon realised that the tickets being raised on the Helpdesk were primarily due to a lack of knowledge regarding how to use the applications and technology at hand. I took on the task of developing and delivering IT training sessions on Microsoft Windows and Office applications for the bank and this was my initiation into the IT Learning & Development world (almost 30 years ago!).

Communication, support, and demonstrating the art of the possible is at the heart of what I do, what I’m passionate about and very much what we wanted Prosperity to be about.”

Stephanie Fox, Head of Security Solutions also thought she would end up as a teacher, but after being inspired by the IT she was taught at school, she saw the endless opportunities it presented and went on to complete a degree in Business with Computing. Her IT career led her into the finance industry where she spent more than 15 years leading and managing effective IT environments for global organisations. She

specialised in the design and implementation of scalable IT strategies coupled with successful project delivery. “From working in the highly regulated finance industry, I developed a passion for IT security and governance which is what I do at Prosperity and have been supported to enhance these skills by recently achieving the CISM – Certified Information Security Manager and APM Project Management Qualifications.”

Geraldine emphasises how Stephanie’s recent qualifications are one example of how Prosperity encourages all colleagues in a fair and equal way, no matter the gender. “We do this by ensuring equality in pay, opportunities and training. Personal development plans and training are a key part of ensuring we are supporting our Great Minds.”

Skye Mourant, A Senior Consultant in Prosperity’s Strategy and Change team, was the third of our ladies who thought they would become a teacher.

“I did a degree in education and after travelling a friend suggested I’d be good at project management. All the core skills I’d learned in my degree were very transferable to the project world - planning, organisation, presentations and leadership are all skills I use daily when working with our clients.” It’s these transferable skills, that Geraldine says are important when overcoming some of the barriers to entry for the technology sector.

“We’re helping females develop the skills and knowledge they need to succeed, whether in-house at Prosperity or through Digital Jersey’s mentoring scheme. Mentors provide guidance, feedback, and support on technical skills, as well as soft skills such as communication, networking, and leadership, to help women navigate their career paths and develop strategies for career advancement.”

Trudie Lee, another one of our Senior Consultants in Strategy and Change has acted as a mentor to others as part of the Digital Jersey mentoring programme. “I think educating people on the variety of roles and opportunities available is critical. IT isn’t just about helpdesk support or coding, there is so much more to it. We offer some really varied roles across the IT and Project Management spectrum. It’s about the types of experience and different industries you can work in.” Trudie did an English with Creative Writing degree, then went on to do the Graduate Diploma in Law but decided that she was more suited to a career with British Airways, “I worked my way around the various departments and roles in the company and ended up as a project manager in the engineering department, delivering projects like SAP-integrated vending machines for engineering parts, pipe-bending machines and weighing aircraft. When I moved to Jersey, I stayed in project management and now have experience of several industries and types of projects.”

Nicoleta Pavel, is a Consultant with our Strategy and Change team, has a Bachelor Degree in Economic Cybernetics, Statistics and Informatics and a Masters Degree in Financial Analysis and Valuation. She is currently studying for the BCS (British Computer Society) International Diploma in Business Analysis and a Mum to a pre-schooler too! “Many of us are Mums and that is often seen as a barrier to progression in business. From my first contact with Prosperity, it was very clear that they genuinely care for their employees thriving and wellbeing, but

for me the most important thing was that I was always encouraged to put my family first and I was as important as anyone else in the company.”

Alexis Halliday-Santos is Prosperity’s Head of Change Management and says the company’s people first approach, doesn’t just apply to colleagues but also to clients. “My background was in Human Resources before moving into project management and continuous improvement.

Prosperity is more than a technology business, it’s about helping people to discover the art of the possible when it comes to making their jobs easier and being more efficient.

Her experience is a great example of where Prosperity’s philosophy supports colleagues right at the start of their career. “I am currently on a gap year and wanted to find an internship with a highly regarded consultancy to gain some experience in technology.” Izzie values the professional, friendly, and welcoming working environment at Prosperity. “I’ve already been involved in a wide variety of projects and appreciate how everyone is very approachable, if you need help with something.”

With plans for a Master’s degree in either cyber security or data science, Izzie appreciates the constant learning opportunities both through structured training and from experienced colleagues. “I’m constantly learning new coding languages and applications, and I’m able to use the knowledge from my degree to give a different perspective.”

What part of your role is most challenging?

Allie, Could you define your role for us?

Would you encourage more females to seek career opportunities in wealth management?

My role as Business Development Director has a very broad scope, in essence the objective is to grow the business in line with business strategy plans and work with a client or prospective clients to guide and support them with solutions to meet their needs. A business development relationship is twofold in my opinion, it is seeking out new opportunities and maintaining and nurturing existing relationships at the same time.

Research is key to the success of a business development role, whether it's research in understanding your clients, prospective clients, markets or products. Preparation and planning are extremely important to unlock new opportunities in new markets, client channels, partnerships and product solutions.

Measuring success is a fundamental factor in business development, reviewing management information and key performance indicators highlights trends in client requirements as well as measuring activity and conversion success rates. This helps the business adapt and change certain aspects of client engagement and or products.

Visibility and networking in the marketplace is important, attending industry events and conferences is part of the role. Interaction with others at these events helps to promote the brand, build relationships and discuss potential opportunities.

What part of your role is most enjoyable?

I enjoy the diversity my role has to offer. I deal with an international client base and with the ever changing regulatory and market conditions and clients evolving requirements, every day is interesting and a learning day. I enjoy exploring and unlocking new opportunities for the business.

An exciting part of my business development role is that on occasions I get to attend a special client events, Wimbledon being my favourite experience.

The most challenging part of my role is dealing with situations beyond my control such as changes to regulation, markets, and client requirements. That said, I enjoy the task of seeking out solutions and working together with colleagues to give clients to best possible outcome.

Yes, in particular front office facing roles such as financial planning and investment management. Historically these front office roles have been male dominated. Having females in these roles creates a more diverse culture and it gives all clients alternative options to deal with either a male or female adviser. It also enables a greater balance of opinion, fresh perspectives and shared ideas and experiences.

Surround yourself with people you love, trust and who support you and never ever stop learning new things. Knowledge is power!

If you were giving advice to your 16 year old self what would it be?

Never compare yourself to anyone else. We all develop at different rates of speed, whether it be through your study, career, or private life. There is no set rule that states you must qualify, get promoted or even purchase a property by a certain age. Surround yourself with people you love, trust and who support you and never ever stop learning new things.

What do you do day-to-day?

At its core my role is that of Director within our audit function, with responsibility for signing audit opinions. I have a varied portfolio of clients within asset management, with a specific focus on the audits of regulated corporate service providers, but also including real estate private equity funds. I also lead our controls assurance engagements (eg, ISAE 3402 reports, for those in the know!)

In addition, I have a role as deputy ‘person responsible for training’, overseeing our staff on ICAEW and ACCA training contracts and I sit on the subcommittee for the Institute of Directors Future Leaders Scheme, which is sponsored by KPMG (giving young people the opportunity to shadow leaders in a range of fields and industries).

Is there a female who inspires you in business and why?

I am inspired by so many of the women I connect with, from senior partners across our global KPMG network, to women in senior leadership and management positions at client organisations, all of whom demonstrate that we can successfully operate at senior levels in business (whilst juggling family responsibilities etc). I am also particularly inspired by junior colleagues who are rising through the ranks – they bring such a great energy to our team and they push me to be a better leader – I am optimistic about the future female leaders of the firm.

What do you do day-to-day?

Day-to-day my job is rarely the same. I returned to work in August, post taking a year for maternity leave, and now I work part time. I tend to get into the office each day around 8:30am, grab a cup of tea and some breakfast and catch up on a few emails whilst checking my calendar and to-do list for critical things to ensure happen that day. This can be anything from client meetings (sometimes including travel), catch ups with my various KPMG audit teams, file reviews, consultations with colleagues, director business meetings, trainings to keep up to date with the latest audit technical requirements or general admin related to my engagements. I then wrap up around 1 or 2pm before grabbing some lunch and picking my son up from nursery.

Do you think there is a benefit to being a female in your industry?

Yes. Historically audit and the Private Equity industry has been male dominated at the senior levels, as women commonly left seeking other work when they had families due to long hours and other commitments. We are now changing things, with more women progressing to senior levels, some of them balancing families, bringing a level of diversity and flexibility into the industry as it evolves to meet upcoming technological and regulatory changes.

This is fundamentally changing the way we think about performing audits, for the better.

Laura What are you most proud of during your time with CSC? I take great pride in the positive transformations we’ve recently implemented.

Our reporting mechanisms underwent a significant overhaul, and we standardised processes across the central support teams, introducing a heightened level of transparency and efficiency. This achievement is the result of a collaborative team effort, and I’m confident these enhancements are bringing about meaningful improvements to our operations.

Additionally, I’m proud of our focus on developing teams and staff. How would you describe working within the Corporate and Legal Solutions business at CSC? Nicola What are you most excited about for the year ahead with CLS? I’m excited about the upcoming year for CLS, as it holds a number of promising opportunities and exciting projects. A major highlight for me this year is the launch of our CSC brand refresh, which marks a pivotal step toward integrating Intertrust within CSC and imparts meaning to both our clients and our employees. The amalgamation of strengths from Intertrust and CSC combined through the rebrand positions us as a true global service provider and employer of choice. I’m enthusiastic about what we can achieve in 2024.

What is your favourite part about your role?

The favourite part of my role is the real opportunity to make a difference, and what elevates this experience is being part of a great team. Whether it’s tackling challenging projects or devising innovative strategies, the ability to collaborate with dynamic engaged people is immensely fulfilling. What do you do day-to-day?

My day starts with comprehensive patient consultations providing individualised treatment plans to meet patient expectations, which is in line with my ethos of providing natural-looking results using a portfolio of gold-standard procedures, devices and my advanced techniques.

Days are variable depending on which treatments we are doing, from a single session, Non-Surgical Lift with Ultherapy, to cosmetic injections to smooth lines and wrinkles, dermal fillers for facial contouring, and Sculptra for collagen stimulation. For those stubborn pockets of body fat and double chins, we use Coolsculpting to freeze and destroy those fat cells forever. The icing on the cake is Profhilo, a skin booster, giving everyone ‘that’ glow.

Is there is a benefit to being a female in your industry?

Yes, as I have been practising Aesthetics for 4 decades now, I have gone through all the stages of ageing

that a woman goes through. This gives me first-hand knowledge and experience on how best to navigate and adapt treatment plans according to the patients age groups and specific needs. For the younger patients I focus on beautification, for the mature patients, a restorative approach to reduce the visible signs of ageing and restore their youthful appearance, resulting in beautiful natural-looking results. All age groups benefit from our preventative procedures.

Best bit of your job?

Seeing the transformations and results patients get, to see their renewed confidence brings me so much joy.

Hardest bit?

There are simply not enough hours in the day!

Is there a female who inspires you?

Professor Jean Carruthers the pioneer of Cosmetic Botox, whom I had the honour of training with in Vancouver Canada at the start of my career.

What do you get up to outside of work?

I love learning and continually updating my knowledge so that I can always deliver the most safe and up to date quality treatments for my patients, so I do a lot of studying! Other passions of mine are interior design and retail therapy.

The woman with the plan After a stint in the Middle East, Anna Slater returned to the UK and on to Jersey to take up the role of Paraplanner at Nedbank Private Wealth. As a young women in a traditionally male-heavy environment, she shares a little about her role.

How long have you been with Nedbank?

I started with Nedbank Private Wealth in May 2022. After graduating from the University of East Anglia with a BSc Hons degree in Business Management and Marketing I decided to move to the Middle East to take up a financial services graduate role.

Following my move back to London, I joined a UK- based financial planning company before joining the world of international highnet-worth private clients at Nedbank Private Wealth.

What do you do day-to-day?

I work within the Wealth Planning team, helping our highnet-worth clients living in Jersey as well as those who live in many different locations globally. My main role is to assist our wealth planners to create wealth plans for clients.

Wealth plans help our clients clearly see their financial futures over the next 20, 30 or 40 years - often for the first time - showing them how to meet their financial objectives and helping them get from ‘where they are now’ to ‘where they want to be’ in the future. Another large part of my role is assisting in the research of the multitude of financial products our clients may have - from pensions to offshore trusts, to complex multi-location structures.

Do you think there is a benefit to being a female in your industry?

Yes absolutely! We know that females and males have stereotypical strengths and weakness in their traits for example, men can be perceived as more brazen and confident in the workplace - and although historically this may have disadvantaged women, this is changing.

Certainly, in the financial planning and advice field I work in there are other ‘typically female’ qualities such as empathy and listening that naturally support the emotional and value-led planning that we use within Nedbank Private Wealth. These attributes lead to hugely positive outcomes with our clients. We believe that to truly understand individuals and create a personalised investment portfolio for our clients it is essential that we understand what is meaningful for them, their lives and their families. I believe it is important that women realise that they do not need to exhibit ‘typically male’ attributes in order to be successful in financial services.

It is notable that our profession is recognising that the ‘future is female’ with women set to inherit 70% of global wealth over the next two generations. Ultimately there needs to be a diverse and wide range of professionals available to advise these women – so the opportunity for women to drive important decision making in firms across all levels of the business has never been greater.

What is the best part of your job?

Firstly, I would say meeting so many interesting clients and helping to create a bespoke future plan for them and their families. Money can be a topic that can be scary for many, and we get a lot of satisfaction from providing education and reassurance to clients, especially when we can demonstrate that their investment portfolio is there to meet their purpose and their goals, as opposed to simply being invested for investment’s sake!

The second-best bit of my job is the opportunities Nedbank Private Wealth provide to help me with my learning and career progression. For example, working in a collaborative team and developing business relationships with professionals. I also write articles (such as this article for Gallery magazine!) and am involved in live webinars broadcasting to thousands of existing and prospective clients all over the world. I feel very lucky that Nedbank Private Wealth is a supportive employer and values its employees so highly. Throughout the business we are all actively encouraged to be our true selves and grow to be the best we can be.

and the hardest part?

I’m sure a lot of people will be able to relate to not having enough hours in the day! We are a very busy team and the bespoke service we provide to our clients I believe is second to none, so trying to see as many of our clients as possible can occasionally be a challenge.

Is there a female who inspires you?

I am very privileged to meet lots of fascinating women through our work with professional introducers; tax advisers, lawyers and trustees to name a few. I’ve also met some amazing female clients who have been hugely successful in a wide range of specialisms. A lot of these women have added hurdles in their progression such as maybe taking time away from work to have children or time spent taking on the burden of providing care for a family member and despite this, they have achieved so much and are top of their respective fields. Working alongside these inspiring women to serve our clients is hugely rewarding and proves to me that women can really do it all!

What it’s like being a young woman in a traditionally male environment?

Being a young woman in a traditionally male environment such as financial services can present a number of challenges because not only are you less represented as a woman but also being young you don’t always have the self-confidence and life skills that other, more experienced, female colleagues have had the time to practice. It is common to experience imposter syndrome whether you’re female or male, but when you can’t physically see as many females who you relate to, working in the roles that you would like to be in, these feelings are often amplified. That is a key reason why the narrative of a traditionally male environment needs to change from the grassroots, because it is enabling a barrier for entry into financial services roles.

Girls at school - especially during those formative years need to know that roles in ‘traditionally male’ industries are available to them, just as they are assumed to be available to boys.

This issue isn’t just affecting the workforce though, it quite often indirectly affects clients. We can see in our own interactions with clients that conversations on money may be left to male members of families - husbands, fathers etc, with women of the family left out of those important conversations on wealth. It may seem unjust, but we also know that behind closed doors women are said to be making most of the financial decisions for their family!

So, it may be a traditionally male environment, but I see this is changing within my cohort and, with the Financial Conduct Authority launching new gender diversity targets, we should see positive outcomes both internally in companies and externally to clients.

What do you do day-to-day?

Along with my team of seven, we look after the internal finances of IQ-EQ Jersey. This covers everything from statutory and regulatory requirements to financial operations and billing, plus management reporting. A lot of number crunching, analysis and strategising.

Is there a benefit to being a female in your industry?

I don’t think there is necessarily a benefit, however I like to think I challenge the stereotype for my type of role.

What is the best part of your job?

The variety and the people. Parts of my job are very cyclical, however in a fast-paced organisation like IQ-EQ nothing stays the same for

very long! The Finance team is involved in many different parts of the organisation and so I get to work with many different people with varied skillsets, thought processes and personalities; it makes things very interesting and forces me to challenge myself on the way I think about things.

Being patient with change; when I can see the end state that we are aiming for, on a project or on improvements we are making to processes, I want to get there quickly!

Is there a female who inspires you?

Whitney Wolfe Herd – She challenged the norm when it came to dating apps, and her idea for Bumble was centred around reversing gender norms and empowering women to make the first move. Seven years in, and she simultaneously became the youngest self-made billionaire and woman to take a company public. I think she demonstrates a level of self-belief and tenacity that is inspirational to others.

What is your career highlight, so far?

It’s a challenge to choose… It would be easy to pick professional qualifications or promotions, however personally I think watching my teams grow and develop give me the greatest sense of satisfaction. I am a firm believer that by looking after your people, the rest will take care of itself. I have been lucky enough to have many exceptional mentors throughout my career and I enjoy passing on my knowledge and experience to my own teams.

What do you get up to out of work?

In the summer you can normally find me on the beach with my husband and our two dogs, having a BBQ and enjoying the sunshine.

Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts – it’s the only book I’ve ever read twice, all 944 pages! Based on a true story, it explores the various sides and emotions of a person’s life and really challenged the way I look at the world.

A difficult one to choose, but either Fleetwood Mac or Take That. We had songs from both bands at our wedding, so they provoke some lovely memories… plus, who doesn’t love a catchy tune to sing along to?!

Café Spice – you can’t beat a curry, and the service in Café Spice is second to none.

What do you to exercise?

For me, there is nothing better than a big walk on the cliff paths. We have two, very energetic dogs who are happiest out and about, off the lead. Plus, nature is so good for the soul!

What is your dream holiday?

A very difficult question! As much as I love a relaxing beach holiday with a good book, I think I’d have to pick a multi stop trip with lots to see and do, very rich in culture and with lots of great food! I have just come back from honeymoon in South Africa, and that was incredible – can highly recommend a safari!

Crime fighter

Michelle Hayden, the seasoned detective turned financial crime fighter, wears two hats at Rathbones Investment Management International in Jersey: Money Laundering Reporting Officer and Money Laundering Compliance Officer.

From chasing criminals on the streets of Merseyside to safeguarding financial integrity in Jersey, her journey reflects a deep commitment to protecting people and institutions from illicit activities and she gives us a glimpse into her role, responsibilities, and experiences as a female compliance professional in Jersey’s finance industry.

“I have responsibility for overseeing aspects of the business that could be associated with financial crime. My days are filled with analysing suspicious activity reports, training staff to be vigilant, and ensuring compliance with regulations”. As a member of the Rathbones Jersey Executive Committee, she supports and guides the firm’s responsible growth, balancing commercial needs with stringent anti-money laundering measures. Michelle emphasises the importance of a proactive approach, encouraging staff to report suspicions, and her team assesses and determines whether to report the suspicion to the Financial Intelligence Unit.

She appreciates the women in her career who achieved success in their roles through hard work and professionalism. “To achieve their goals, women need that support. Throughout my career I’ve been mentored by some brilliant women who have done exceptionally well for themselves based on merit and have in turn provided that support to me.”

This is something she tries to provide to her own team at Rathbones. “I have an open-door policy. I like to think I am approachable and have a nurturing and friendly nature, which makes people feel comfortable expressing their concerns.”

Beyond her professional life, Michelle and her husband love to travel and socialise but the apple of her eye is her Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Lagertha, who became an addition to her family during the pandemic as a puppy. As well as spoiling her rotten, Michelle is training for the London Marathon. “I’m running for Centrepoint to raise money for them.

It broke my heart that there are families on this lovely island that need financial support. So I wanted to do something for Centrepoint to help them support those families. It’s great to be supported by Rathbones to do that too.” Both in her professional and personal life, it is clear that Michelle considers success to be based on balance. Being personal, but not taking things personally, understanding the commercial need of the business yet maintaining high standards for regulations and compliance, being objective and sticking to professional judgments, yet collaborative and part of the team. Being supported, yet standing by your own convictions.

Her career started at age 19 with Merseyside Police where she worked for 5 years before moving to Jersey. Here, she joined the States of Jersey Police in the Joint Financial Crime Unit (JFCU) and Criminal Investigation Department (CID), where she worked as a detective for 17 years. Her experiences in the police were some of the highlights of her career, especially in investigating financial crime, which set her up for a move to compliance. “Both roles have similar goals, where we’re trying to prevent the crime from happening but the nature of the work is quite different. Compliance is more about helping others to put the necessary checkpoints in place.”

Michelle stressed the reasons for the importance of training others as part of her role. “When I was in the police, the view of the world can be quite black and white. You’re acting on the basis that you’re dealing with criminals. Our focus, as well as reporting suspicion, should be on implementing effective processes and checkpoints that safeguard us, our clients, and the financial system’s integrity. This fosters trust and strengthens the reputation of our industry and the island as a whole.”.” During the MoneyVal Evaluation visit last October, she actively promoted Rathbones’ and the wider industry’s dedication to compliance and transparency, participating in several interviews as a key representative.

Compliance in the finance industry continues to be female dominated and Michelle acknowledges the challenges and biases that there can be for women, but has always felt lucky to work in environments where she has been supported. “I think great leadership fostering an inclusive environment is really important. It is great to see women in some senior positions in the industry, at Rathbones and the Jersey Financial Services Commission.”

3. Embrace Difference – High performance and strong relationships grow from an acceptance that a blend of skills, experience and personalities is a hotbed for learning and development. Embracing difference and valuing your own and others’ uniqueness.

4. Perception is a close relative of fact – Treat perception with equal importance to fact. You may not understand the perception of a client or stakeholder. However, you must unpack the root causes that created that perception and your reward will be a rich source of learning on developing and managing strong professional relationships.

5. Build Rapport– Building rapport is a high-yield investment and a fast track to building and sustaining productive professional relationships.

Establishing a mutual agreement early and understanding the benefits of investing in any relationship is key. Don’t be afraid to be open about what both parties stand to gain. From this empathy for each other’s roles and pressures will develop.

How long have you worked at iQ?

Started work at iQ Jersey in September 2021 as a weekend sales assistant and became a full time sales assistant in June 2023.

What does your day to day look like?

I assist customers with their queries and make sure I offer as much assistance and advice as I can. I also answer customers emailed queries and restock the shop floor and complete stock counts.

When did your interest in tech start?

I became an Apple convert when I was 8 years of age and I got an iPad to help with my school work.

What gadget could you not live without?

Definitely my iPhone, I use it to contact family and friends daily and of course I am constantly demoing and explaining Apps to customers.

What is it like being a female in your industry?

It has its challenges once in a while, but I’m lucky to have a supportive and encouraging team around me, which makes everything worthwhile.

Whats your favourite iPhone shortcut that people might not know about?

What do you love about your job?

I love helping customers and advising them so they make informed choices about what they buy, ensuring they leave the store happy with their purchase. I also love the team around me.

What would you say are your top 3 Apple products? iPhone 15 Pro - I love all its features, particularly Find my iPhone, I use it daily!

Nicki Kennedy is a Voice, Communication and Confidence Coach. She has enjoyed a long career as a classical soloist, singing with orchestras all over the world and recording movie soundtracks but she has always taught singing alongside.

She moved to Jersey during the pandemic, and suddenly singing was off the menu. Having always been interested in voice science and coaching, she had to think about transferable skills and realised that with her performance experience, she could help people in the business world with presentation skills and confidence under pressure and also help people who needed to improve the quality of their voice and their gravitas in work environments.

Nicki, tell us about your work

My work is a glorious mixture of helping individuals or groups use evidence-based strategies to channel nerves and organise presentations and speaking tasks, alongside working with individuals on confident presenting, speaking voice, accent, singing, or vocal rehabilitation for people who are having difficulties. I also run a music charity here in Jersey, Aureole Music.

Do you think there is a benefit to being a female in your industry?

Personally, I have been determined never to allow myself to see being female as a disadvantage. As for being advantageous, it is true that a significant number of inquiries come in to me from women who are struggling to find their voice in the workplace, either because they feel they are not taken quite as seriously as their male counterparts or because they lack the confidence to really make the impact they need to to get their point across, whether that be in presentations or in day-to-day meetings.

In those cases, it probably does help that I am a woman and that I can obviously show particular empathy. And who knows? Perhaps in the wider business of coaching, rightly or wrongly, there may still be some leaning and bias towards the traditional notion that a woman (motherly, empathetic, etc.) is going to be a good listener and someone to be trusted with your confidence.

What is the best bit of your job?

The variety. I love the challenge of constantly adjusting to the highly individual needs of whoever is in front of me on any particular day. It requires mental agility and I really enjoy that challenge.

...and the hardest bit?

Keeping on top of the emails and the admin! I’ve just started to get some help with this from fabulous V.A Emma Camm, having always managed it all myself. It’s a great relief to have someone else on the team with me now!

Is there a female who inspires you?

Here in Jersey, I have huge admiration for a wonderful group of creative and artistic friends, and amongst them, in business terms, particularly for the vision and

determination of Carolyn Rose Ramsay, who has set up the incredibly ambitious project that is Ballet d’Jerri, bringing international-quality ballet to us here in Jersey. Last year, I listened to luxury fashion brand icon Anya Hindmarch’s audiobook ‘If in Doubt, Wash Your Hair’, and was hugely inspired by her too for different reasons. She is a woman who is entrepreneurial and willing to take risks and work incredibly hard in business, but who still somehow manages to keep the plates spinning on the home and friends front, and her book is all about the ways that she manages this, not always perfectly but as well as she can.

Sometimes, one just has to be kind to oneself and let go of a few things.

What are your career highlights, so far?

There are definitely some highlights from my singing career. I was lucky enough to sing operas and classical concerts in iconic venues and recording studios all over the world, performing as a soloist in some wonderful venues and with some wonderful orchestras from Japan to the USA, via Mexico, Egypt and Europe. Perhaps my very favourite places closer to home were venues like the Wigmore Hall in London.

I have felt incredibly lucky to perform frequently there. I was very fortunate indeed to be part of a very small number of singers who work in the truly iconic recording studios at Abbey Road, singing on the soundtracks to films such as Harry Potter, The Hobbit, Pirates of the Caribbean and others, and crossing paths in the studio with some fabulous artists like Bjork, Take That and, maybe most surprising of all, enjoying a credit on some albums by Finland’s symphonic metal band Nightwish.

In business terms, highlights are around small steps achieving hardearned goals such as qualifying in Vocal Rehabilitation and Vocal Massage Therapy, and of course, finally renting my own space last year so that I can work with many many different clients on all sorts of different aspects of their voice, whether it be functional or to do with confidence and actually finding their voice.

What do you get up to out of work?

Outside of work, I like to combine exercise with socialising. I play tennis and swim in the sea, and these things I do with amazing groups of friends. They bring me so much laughter, friendship, outdoor time, and we support each other through tricky times. I also love to listen to a wonderful concert, go to the ballet or an exhibition, or lose myself in a fabulous book.

Do you have any book recommendations?

Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari. It is a thought-provoking walk through human history that, through an evolutionary lens, helps grapple with the question of what it is to be a human in our rapidly changing modern world.

What is your favourite band?

It’s more of a choir… King’s College Choir, Cambridge. Beautiful choral music that lifts the soul, sung in a beautiful building. Both my son and husband sang in this choir, and so it has huge personal resonance for me too. Fortunately, though this remains an all male choir, opportunities for girls to take up choristerships and this wonderful musical education are far broader than they were when I was a girl!

What is your favourite place to eat in Jersey?

Shout out for my local kiosk, Rhona’s! A crab sandwich looking over Gorey Castle is a winner every time.

What would be your dream holiday?

One with the family. Anywhere.

My job, as it says on my card, is the Finance Director. A Finance Director who also runs HR ( and the Staff Christmas Party - that’s very important). I’m am also the Accounts Department, Purchasing and Sales along with Stock Control and Ordering. Until now I was looking for new products that may work in our business but I have now handed that to my son, Lawrence. I analyse the business to see where we can improve or change things to increase efficiency, making us more cost-effective to our customers. I am also responsible for the wellbeing and health of our employees.

As Director of Berry’s Chartered Accountants, Rebecca Berry is used to taxing problems presented by clients.

Beating the self-doubt and juggling family life makes her able to understand and offer advice to empower others.

How did your business come about?

Juggling all the hats of being a business owner and balancing that with my home life.

Is there a female who inspires you?

Jen Sincero, her book “You Are a Badass” was gifted to me on day one by a fellow female business owner and it changed my outlook on everything! I have been extremely fortunate to work with some incredible women and have strong female role models throughout my career.

I love meeting people, listening to their stories and being able to provide valuable advice. After working as an Accountant for over 13 years, I built a practice centred around this. I am determined to prove that accountants do so much more than filing tax returns (although we do that too!). We want every business owner to know they have someone in their corner, providing them with expertise and a listening ear whenever they need it.

What has been your career highlight, so far?

What do you do day-to-day?

Book recommendation?

Most mornings usually consist of meetings with clients, discussing their finances, strategy, and goals. I like to get to know my clients and their businesses inside out so no two meetings look the same! Then in the afternoon I will work in the office catching up on work or head out to a client site.

Do you think there is a benefit to being a female in your industry?

Being a female business owner means I can relate to a lot of the challenges faced by women in business, such as juggling family and work commitments or battling imposter syndrome and feelings of self-doubt. I’ve been there myself and brought this experience to offer the best advice to empower others.

What is best part of your job?

I have a varied and fulfilling career, travelled to some great places but nothing beats the feeling of working for yourself and receiving great feedback from clients.

What do you get up to out of work?

I love travelling, especially to Disney with my husband and daughters.

Great Circle by Maggie Shipstead, it’s long but well worth a read.

Favourite band?

Not a band, but Taylor Swift.

Favourite place to eat in Jersey?

We’re very spoilt for choice in Jersey but it would have to be Upstairs at Anley Street.

Promotions at L’Horizon Two team members at L’Horizon Beach Hotel & Spa have taken on new roles. Julia Ivanov who has a wealth of experience within luxury hotels has taken on the position of the new Food and Beverage Service Manager whilst Sam Fernandes has been promoted to Sales and Events Manager.

Romanian born Julia will be responsible for managing all the Food and Beverage outlets throughout the hotel to ensure L’Horizon Beach Hotel & Spa is delivering one of the best guest experiences on the island. She will be working alongside Executive Head Chef Andrew Soddy and his team, keeping abreast of trends in the food industry and implementing new menus in the hotel as well as helping to develop her fellow team members through training and coaching.

Sam who hails from South Africa and previously worked at L’Horizon’s sister hotel, Grand Jersey Hotel & Spa, has been promoted from Assistant Sales and Events Manager. She is now tasked with the overall management of the hotel events sales office, leading and motivating the team and overseeing weddings, meetings and conferences and corporate and social events. She also oversees the booking and reservations processes for the hotel’s food and beverage outlets. “Sam’s department is equally important and is the first point of contact whether it’s a reservation requirement or an event. Key Promotion At Alex Picot Trust Qualified accountant Mollie Luce has been promoted to the newly created role of Assistant Accounts Manager and Data Analyst.

Moments that mattered - Alex Morel From I.T. teacher to tree lover, Alex Morel sits with us this month to explore the planned and surprising twists of her varied career path and why everything she has achieved to date has been built upon strong roots within the community.

I learnt a strong work ethic at an early age from my parents. My mum was a master multitasker and my dad was a chef so I saw firsthand what grit and determination could achieve. They taught me the value of the pound so as soon as I could I starting making money, charging people to clean out lockers or collecting golf balls out of duck ponds – I was very resourceful!

N

ecessity has been a key driver in my success.

Having been made redundant early on in my career and having no security plan, there was no option for my own business to not go the distance.

When you have this motivation behind you, you tend to learn fast and take hold of all the opportunities that come your way. ALX Training, an I.T. teaching platform, grew really quickly thanks to perseverance and the collaboration with the Jersey business community.

Launching a start-up is far less daunting when surrounded by your peers and thankfully the Government had spearheaded a networking scheme for new businesses to meet and learn from each other. Based in the Regus offices, I met everyone I needed to grow and evolve, finding an accountant, tax advisor and technology support all under the one roof.

We worked together as new business owners and it taught me that to survive you need to reach out for help, no one person can do it alone.

When I first joined the IoD Jersey there were only two women members, so it’s been wonderful to watch that balance shift over time. I didn’t think of myself as a businesswoman then, possibly suffering from imposter syndrome, instead I felt more of a teacher because that was a box belonging to women at that time. Now I know this the community is where I belong, shared with many great women who constantly inspire me.

Covid changed my business model completely. Whilst it was still classroom led, the move to digital felt disrupting and left me longing for more personal contact. I realised I had grown ALX as much as I could and to sell it onto BDO was a natural step since I needed the resource they have at their disposal and they would benefit from the business my company brought in. Now I support ALX one day a week to bring me out of the trees and woodlands and so I can continue to explore connections that benefit both me and my current charitable role.

I studied Geography and Environmental Science and that has always been my first love, so it was the I.T. years that were a departure from the original career plan. I joined the board of the charity, Trees for Life, as a natural challenging of this energy and passion I had for the environment.

On the day I left ALX it was entirely serendipitous that I was offered the role of CEO as part of a reorganisation of the charity’s infrastructure.

Viberts has joined forces with Lacey Advocates Viberts has announced that it is joining forces with Lacey Advocates. Jersey Advocates Beverley Lacey and Michelle Cabot joined Viberts in January 2024 as Partner and Senior Associate respectively. This move further strengthens Viberts’ commercial and regulatory services and make Viberts’ Dispute Resolution team one of the largest in the Island.

With over 35 years’ experience, Beverley is one of the Island’s most senior litigators. Beverley has acted in many of the leading cases to come before the island’s courts.

She has conducted countless regulatory and enforcement investigations, acting for the Jersey Financial Services Commission, leading members of Jersey’s finance industry and HM Attorney General. For years Beverley was Head of Commercial Litigation at Mourant until establishing Lacey Advocates in 2013.

Michelle joined Lacey Advocates at the outset and has since worked alongside Beverley on some of the biggest high profile cases in the Island. This includes devising and then managing the Historic Abuse Redress Scheme for the Island’s Government and acting for all Government departments before the Jersey Care Inquiry. More recently, Beverley and Michelle acted in respect of major fraud proceedings before the Royal Court.

They tell us they’re going to go beyond ‘typical Saturday night’ with talented DJs headlining their events that they’ve seen making waves in various social media platforms.
