overview
World’s power is not completely held by the countries from the Northern hemisphere (America and Europe). The upcoming powers from countries of the Southern hemisphere have given a balance to it. Brazil, China and India emerge as developing countries which are ready to overtake the North’s power.
One region which is expected to become the giant power is the ASEAN region, as this region has vast oceans, abundance in natural resources, and diverse social culture. Having the similar social background, diversity in culture and high sense of brotherhood make the 10 Nations in South East Asia come together as ASEAN.
ASEAN Open Community 2015 becomes one of the apex of freedom in ASEAN nations. This globalization involves more than 3 main sectors: politics, economy and socio-culture. Another sector which will have a great impact is the science and technology sectors. The development of science and technology in ASEAN is not as fast as that in developed countries; however, the development in this sector would be a great support for the other sectors in facing ASEAN Open Community 2015. Similar social background, economic growth and the development of science and technology in South East Asia could be an indication of the equality between ASEAN nations. An interesting concept is to see how students as agent of change take part in ASEAN Open Community 2015
According to this, the Student Union of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Faculty Gadjah Mada University initiates to gather ASEAN sciences and technology students to develop science and technology in South East Asia to discuss three sectors, , that are energy, science and technology development and environment. This role can make ASEAN to be better. ASOSTyN’s initiation has been hold on September 7 – 15 th with nine universities. There are Universitas Indonesia, Institut Teknologi Bandung, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Nanyang Technological University, National University Singapore, Prince Songkla University dan Thammasat University.
We are all optimism about establishing this forum could give positive effect. One step to made it is helding International Conference for ASEAN Science and Technology Students on December 4-7th 2014 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Many students interested in this forum, but students from Singapore and Thailand couldn’t attend because of having an exam so that the participants are just came from Indonesia and Malaysia. The result of the conference is paper that collects the research from all the participants. And in that event, ASOSTyn has been declared
as the media to discuss science and technology For optimizing the network, ASOSTyn will held a visit to universities in ASEAN on January 14-17th. The universities are Islamic International University Malaysia, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Prince Songkla University, University Kebangsaan Malaysia, Nanyang Technological University and National University of Singapore.
