The Whole Earth Catalog, famous for reviews and references of tools and ideas, provided an alternate future for it’s readers. The preceding drawings do not necessarily describe an alternate future, however they draw a section through the thoughts and workings which will culminate in a new international development program providing parts and tools, and perhaps more importantly, knowledge and skills to some of the world’s population (20%) which currently do not have access to adequate electricity. Light poverty is an issue often overlooked as a development issue, the solution is not solely technological, but by empowering communities an improved future can be realised. Deliberately, a product is not designed or specified, however some component parts of the process are described in the project.

While “informal housing is rarely recognised for architectural significance, as cities expand the inevitable truth is that many populations will live in dense urban spaces with inadequate infrastructure. However, this does not act to reduce the vibrancy, life, as well as atmosphere which is evident in such spaces. The models describe hypothetical results of the lighting program. Again, no product is defined, but the emphasis is upon transformative effects. An understanding of the existing condition is also given. Ordinarily architectural renders display promise and aspirations, however by using similiar graphical techniques, feelings of empathy can in turn be unduced.
