The latest collection from Boråstapeter is a tribute to life outdoors, the summer season and everything that goes with it. Garden Party combines delicate floral patterns and watercolour effects with a slightly nostalgic touch. A vintage herbarium from a time when our grandmothers were young inspired the designers when creating the new collection. The botanical theme is consistent throughout and the designs are reminiscent of the playfulness associated with the rural 1950’s. Watercolour effects are combined with hot pink, pear green, dreamy peach and warm grey.

- We wanted to find patterns that bring the greenery into the rooms and remind us of the simple pleasures of outdoor life but with a nostalgic twist, says Hanna Wendelbo-Hansson, head designer at Boråstapeter. All of the prints in the collection are meant to serve as an inspiration to a more playful and relaxed decorating style at home.

INTERVIEW M.EMİN TEKSTİL
Engin Mercan
I’m Engin Mercan. I was born and grew up in Germany and completed my education there. Now I live in Bursa. I’m the founder of M. Emin Tekstil established in 2006 and operated on ready-made garment sector in the past. M. Emin Tekstil makes production of upholstery, curtain and decorative fabrics of home textile industry and exports them to many countries. I worked in the garment sector for a long time, so I have been using very well my experience in design and color from the sector for home textile industry. We, as a company, put a strong emphasis on R&D. As far as possible we try to manufacture everything within our own production structure. Of course we take some good supports from our partners in the garment sector. I think success of this collection is it. Now we have a staff of 29 people. We get also R&D support from a team of four people out of the company. Our marketing department consists of five people including me. We try to market products by meeting face to face with our customers as far as possible except fairs. We offer also tailored collections of products for customers that we called as “editor” in certain places of Europe like UK. We push to get the best quality as much as we can. You have to control everything in the textile industry.
48
M.EMİN TEKSTİL INTERVIEW We export 80 percent of the products in pressure resistant special boxes in order to maintain quality. We have sub-ground fabrics produced for printing section. We take goods from Russia that are 100 percent linen and work on especially weaving velvet for domestic market. First we get the raw material and have them painted, then if needed, have these processes done. We bought yarn and have it produced as contract; we produce groups of upholstery and ground on our own jacquard machine. We take pattern from studios in Italy and Austria. We design here and apply on fabrics, then offer it our customers. We works with leading companies and various countries in production such as UK, Germany, Netherland, Austria, Belgium, Morocco, Dubai, Lebanon, Jardon, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and USA. It’s easier for us when we adapt our own design to their demand and pleasure, thus we can reduce R&D costs at a certain level. This case is generally for customers that we called as “edi-
tor” in Europe. This rate is lower in Middle East. We have to offer them our own collection and ideas. We have three brand within M. Emin Tekstil: Art&Interiors, Quba Home and Studio By Memin. Quba Home produces sheer and drapery that has three meters of width. Art&Interiors produces embroideries, leather and jacquard fabrics, upholstery and plain upholstery fabrics. Studio By Memin is a studio based on entirely printing and yarn techniques, focusing on especially collection and printing. Middle Easterners don’t buy designs of Europeans and Europeans don’t buy designs of Middle Easterners. But now Middle East begins gradually to adopt European and British designs.
Softer and plainer products are demanded in Europe. We can give special collections to customers when they come to us in the domestic market. There are companies at top quality that we offer service in the home market. But we support them as much as we can, regarding their own collections and designs. We work with partners without any problem. In Turkey, really scrumptious fabrics are produced in home textile industry. Regarding this process everybody has an effort and labor. I appreciate these people respecting and likening them. I think that Turkey replace Italy in home textile industry. There are a thing that I want to lay emphasis on that; R&D, R&D, R&D. There are need R&D and genuine collections.

HOME TEXTILES & CONTRACT BUSINESS Today, Turkey is one of the first countries that come to mind in world markets when contract business is mentioned. The Turkish Contract Business Industry provides top quality in all respects, from production to promotion and from quality standards to marketing. This success has been achieved by focusing on high added value, design and brand quality as part of Turkey’s export boosting strategy. We need to adjust to some of the changes in the world contract business market: Twenty years ago the world was less complicated. Developing countries possessed a much smaller stake in the global economy and prosperity than that of today. The last twenty years things have changed a lot. Today, developing countries no longer play the role of passive participants. On the contrary, they have become much more active catalysts of globalization. In the past, foreign direct investment went from
Ibrahim BURKAY Chairman, Uludag Textile Exporters Association Chairman, Bursa Chamber of Commerce and Industry 54
Uludag Textile Exporters Association (UTIB) developed countries to the developing. Now, emerging markets are investing in advanced countries. In the past, developing countries attempted to sell low-cost goods to more developed countries. Now, every one of the developing countries themselves is a market for the upper segment. Today, at important events in the contract textile industry, for example in Istanbul, Shanghai, and Moscow, there are participants from all over the world. It is becoming more and more obvious that expectations and perceptions are being re-shaped in new emerging economies within the contract textiles sector, such as those of Turkey, China, and Russia. When we have a look at the contract business market we see that the market is mature and highly competitive. The consumers are looking especially at value and quality. In design, production / technology, socially responsible behaviors etc. smaller and bigger brands alike are trying to be better. There is strong interest in products of contemporary design, and also in antiques and reproduction furniture. And also a market was created in the last few years for easycare materials which are easy to clean and maintain. Big exporters in the sector are faced with increased demands for higher quality and environmentally and socially responsible products, with improved design. This will demand a lot from the production process, which may have to change to meet all the demands of the consumers. Another important trend is shortening of the distribution chain in order to cut costs, especially for the larger organizations. Additionally many importers, whether they are retailers, importer/wholesalers or agents, ask for exclusivity when they buy a product. The reason is to reduce the possibility of the appearance of the same product on the market in other retail outlets.
Furthermore we know that perceptions have changed in the past few decades. Twenty or thirty years ago people were searching for greater comfort in their own homes amongst other places. The desired home designs were found in hotels and so on. Over the past twenty years this trend has changed a lot. Now designers concentrate on bolder and more radical home designs. Style has gained great significance. We are creating and applying sophisticated interiors to hotels and other places which people strongly desire but are reluctant to apply in home design. The identity of a place is critical. Designs and production are now harmonized with identity and expectations. On the other hand, classical forms, tones, and styles continue to maintain their status. With this respect one of the main goals of Turkish Contract Business Sector is to strengthen its success in both traditional markets such as Germany, the US and Russia and in new markets such as China, Brazil and Japan with its own brands. The positive and strong relations with these global partners that Turkey has been pursuing have also been initiated between these countries’ industrialists and exporters. We believe that there is a lot that foreign trade partners will learn from each other and bilateral cooperation will create beneficial results. CONTRACT BUSINESS AND UTIB Uludag Textile Exporters Association (UTİB) was established in 1986. The Association, located in Bursa, is one of the largest Textile Exporters’ Associations in Turkey and has about 1,200 members; of which 40% specialize in home textiles and contract business. In 2013, the UTİB realized 1,4 billion USD in exports. Today, companies in the Association are intensively exporting to

countries such as the Russian Federation, Germany, Romania, Iran, the U.K., Italy, Poland, Morocco, Belgium, Bulgaria, Egypt, Ukraine, and others; more than 180 countries spanning every continent. Uludag Textile Exporters’ Association (UTIB), for a long time have been organizing many business activities such as national participations to international fairs, informative meetings, trade delegations, buyers missions, international project markets, conferences, special reports, workshops etc. in Turkey and in many other countries. UTIB’s 2014 international fair schedule includes tens of fairs. In contract business, as Turkey, at the point that we reached today, decorating a hotel in Berlin, furnishing a restaurant in Shanghai, completely providing the textile needs of a hospital in Moscow, to supplying seat coverings of a cafe in California is our business. Tens of thousands of people in many countries of the world, especially for high segment needs, use our products. Together with all these positive developments, Uludag Textile Exporters Association continues to perform its important role in preserving Turkish Home Textile’s and Turkish Contract Business’ development and strength in world markets. The priority is to intensify R&D and bring out high added value through unique products. In this respect we know that better knowledge is foremost in today’s world, and those who differentiate themselves and are able to procure higher quality are the elite in the global arena. The Uludag Textile Exporters' Association continues its projects in important countries identified as target markets for the Turkish Contract Textiles Sector. The United States, Germany, Russia, France, Belgium, China and Brazil are among those included in the Program for 2014. In all these international fairs people will continue to observe and attend UTIB Trend Areas UTIB Contract Business Areas and UTIB Hotel Room Areas.

Mr. Latif Sarnık, Vino Kadife General Manager, answered Fair World Home Textile Magazine's question about Hometex, Heimtextil and Evteks. “I guess we will be more prepared for Evteks which will be held on May. Heimtextil is also the biggest fair in term of volume, but Evteks is a fair that customers contacted more strongly with manufacturers. When viewed from this aspect, we, manufacturers regard Evteks as a fair that we made much more sales. So especially customers from Middle East, Africa and Russia are coming here with money and then order products and pay their deposit for them.” FW - What are your thoughts about Istanbul Hometex which was held in November 2013?
Latif Sarnık General Manager 62
As you know, it was the first edition of the event. In the beginning, we had hesitations, too as well as other companies, but we were keen to attend there because it would be the first edition, so we prepared for it. For us, Hometex 2013 was successful because we can't find any place at 8th hall in fairs which was held on May so far, it was the first time that we could have been at 8th hall with upholstery companies in Hometex 2013. So we are so happy in this respect. All visitors start their visit from 8th hall. It is known by customers as "the hall of upholsterers". So I think it is fair competition. This is first time that CNR promoters thought it and they realized. Also we hope to

be at 8th hall again in the event on May 2014. We continue to work for it and I think we will get in return for our efforts.
So it is more sensible that products they exhibit on their stands will feature. I look at positively monotype stand application.
If you ask me what negative side of the fair, I think it should been held on October instead of November. It will enable companies to complete their preparations ahead of Heimtextil. There may not be enough time between the current date and Heimtextil. So I think it will be much better if it can move to October. Also there is no so much time for Newroz in Iran. So it will be proper for this market.
FW - You are a exhibitor company of Heixtextil 2014, could you tell us about your preparations for Heimtextil?
We talked on it with CNR promoters; I hope they will take notice of it. I think that it will much better calendar for us, manufacturers if the change happens. FW - Mr. Latif, as to stands, should they be monotype or free? For me, they should be monotype. This provides fair competition among manufacturers. For example, there are monotype stands in France Premiere Vision that's the most prestigious fair of Europe. Maybe CNR staff can get them more quality. I think the fact that stands are monotype and standards is useful. Otherwise, non-standart stands can turn into a show of strength.
INTERVIEW
We always attend Heimtextil Frankfurt, we will be there, too. Apart from Hometex in Istanbul, we have some special design and colour works for Europe. We aim to be in European market by following trends of Europe and making proper pattern creation designs and coloring for trends. We are so happy with Heimtextil Frankfurt. As I mentioned, we are at hall of upholsterers there. Heixtextil Frankfurt is the biggest one of the industry. So we believe that we will gain recognition when we exhibit our products there on January 2014. So we want to take a share from European market. FW - As distinct from Evteks 2013, what kinds of preparations will you make for Evteks 2014, what will visitors see on your stand? I guess we will be more prepared for Evteks which will be held on May. Heimtextil is also the biggest fair
in term of volume, but Evteks is a fair that customers contacted more strongly with manufacturers. When viewed from this aspect, we, manufacturers regard Evteks as a fair that we made much more sales. So especially customers from Middle East, Africa and Russia are coming here with money and then order products and pay their deposit for them. It's not like that fairs abroad. Promotion and swatch card take much more time. So fairs holding in Turkey have an advantage like that. It gives us high motivation and work more decisively. Of course this situation excite us as manufacturers. So everybody make preparation in a way of more organized for Evteks. Now our customers are certain. We design for demands of Russian, Arabic and African customers. It will be fourth time that we will attend Evteks, so we are experienced in Evteks. For after Heimtextil, we already speed up our Evteks works. Thanks.

INTERVIEW TÜZEMEN TEKSTİL
Erkan Tüzemen, owner of the Tüzemen Tekstil answered Fair World Home Textile Magazine's questions:
Erkan Tüzemen Q - What do you think of Heimtextil when you compare it to Evteks? Heimtextil is a long-established tradition. It is an event that ‘editor’ companies from all over the world show a great interest in terms of both participation and visit. But Evteks closes gradually the gap to replace it over the years.
Q - Could you tell us about contribution of this kind of events to Turkish economy and trading of domestic companies? Heimtextil is a fair which based on collection preparations, not hot orders, so it has an effect that reveal themselves in a medium and long term, not in short term. We can say it for almost all fairs.
Q - Could you sum up the industry's general situation in one sentence? - Unfortunately our sector loses its significance and worth day by day because of unqualified employers. But I think that it will come into own place it deserved thanks to qualified employers in coming years. Q - How would you evaluate 2014 in terms of the sector? - 2014 will be a year that I desired not to reflect negative impacts of instability in rate of exchange to the sector. I wish all of you a year full of peaceful and goodness without losing our effort, hope and joy. Thanks for your interest. I wish all of you a successful fair.

INTERVIEW
JA-GE TEKSTİL
Jale Engin Vardar, Vice Chairman of the Management Board and General Manager of JA-GE Tekstil, answered questions of Fair World Home Textile Magazine for the Heimtextil issue. Q – Could you introduce yourself? I was born in Bursa in 1982. I completed primary, secondary education and high school in Bursa. I graduated from The Bilkent University with a degree in business administration in 2004. Then I joined restlessly our family company, JAGE Tekstil and worked in all departments as blue-collar and whitecollar worker. Meanwhile my national basketball career was crowned with coaching certificate from Uludag University. Now I’m Vice Chairman of the Management Board and General Manager of the company. Q – Could you tell us about your company?
Jale Engin Vardar We gathered machinery, yarn production and all facilities making finishing under a single roof with new investments, and then we established HSE, a foreign trade company and now export 96 percent of our products to 44 countries. We ranked as the 52th in the list of domestic companies by exports. Q - Bursa is a city that is a locomotive in the textile industry. As a person in the industry, how do you look at the future of Turkish textile? Textile is spirit of Turkey. It is out of the question to give up, to abandon it. Textile buyers from five continents of the world are coming to Turkey. Our products are appreciated; we are working and provide employments. Aim should be always moving further away. Turkey is playing against leading rivals in the premier league of the industry. Our skills, quickness and labor force ability provided us to move up to premier league. But we need to capture leadership in the textile. I believe that Turkish textile industry reached a very successful level over the world. But I want to underline that producers having some hard times because of exchange rate and high production costs and exporters should be supported in order to gain bigger successes in the industry.
76
Actually my father Şaban Engin started to operate in textile industry producing yarn in 1985. Then we added upholstery fabric to product range in 2001 after establishing a new facility of 3,000 square meters in Bursa Organized Industrial Zone (BOSB) which is the Turkey’s first industrial zone. Just after five years, we increased it to closed area of 25,000 square meters in total thanks to my mother, father and elder sister’s great efforts and ambitions.

Q - What is the key to success? First you should set a target, and then you should desire, make effort and be determined.
Q – How does it feel to be a woman in traditionally a maledominated business life? Although it seems a disadvantage to be a woman and mother, women’s working discipline, commitment to rules and principles, determination to succeed, seeking quality are always one step ahead of men. These skills are important advantages to both improve ourselves and achieve what we do. There is no any woman that couldn’t achieve her goal, even if it is extremely difficult. Employer and employee should share a common fate.
Q - What are needed to have a steady future for a company? Especially in the shrinking and crisis periods, you should take needed measures that your personnel can continue their works without losing their jobs. You should also let them to decide working conditions and time with their own will and decisions upon company’s requirements and changing market circumstance. It is a balancing system for interests of both side in instability period that is experienced economic fluctuations.
