“The best of the best” in Blue Drop Awards: TEKSKO 14
FAIRWORLD
Turkey based home textile company Teksko Kadife Kumas SAN. TIC. A.S. won the “Colour Passage” Blue Drop Award at the MoOD fabric exhibition in Brussels. Teksko was awarded Blue Drop Award in the “Colour Passage” category with the nicest, most surprising, best color setting product against strong competitors. The colour award went to a fabric that uses only one colour. It may seem a little awkward, but the jury has chosen this fabric for the way the colour changes according to the play of light in the yarns. One color became many colors. The Blue Drop Awards have been awarded on the second day of MoOD. The Blue Drop exhibition is an inspiring overview of the “best of the best” of what you can find at MoOD selected from creations submitted by exhibitors. Unique in its own way because it is the world’s only quality label of its kind for interior textiles. Teksko which has the privilege of being chosen by the most elite editors in the world with its dynamic, creative, loyal to customer demands, fast service and innovative structure, is improving itself day by day targeting unconditioned customer satisfaction. MoOD/Indigo Brussels knows how to fascinate show visitors with a varied, inspirational offer. The trend show PASSAGES, the Blue Drop selection, the Blue Drop Awards and most certainly the Innovation Platform all appear to be a must-see for professionals who have a finger on the pulse in the industry.

FANCIES SELECTION
A
season where decoration embraces virtuosic expressions marked by visual simplicity. In tone-on-tone or sophisticated colour combinations, the season is summery and rhythmic. It allows a softness and delicacy to emerge, where monochromes are truly sumptuous. Flowers and stripes are writ large, tones dust surfaces and motifs explore new graphic styles with an offhand freshness, either starkly enlarged, verging on abstraction.
MULTIPLE STRIPES
S
tripes penetrate all activity sectors, and are expressed in three main ways: Graphic, with neat and fresh contrasts. They interlock and separate, only to reform and build happy energetic landscapes. In shirtings, they space out, inspired by household linens and summer deckchairs.
In silkies and linen, they are reinterpreted in new colourways, broken down generously in more fluid versions. They energise laces, knits and embroidery, and sequinned all-overs. Sensitive, fixing motion in colourful undulations, welcoming waves, and embroidered organic swirls, both jacquard and printed. Hazy, woven through with gently fused contours, elaborated in delicate cut-yarns, and colourfully fusing, diluted in clean gradations.

SINGULAR FLOWERS Flowers with stylized and generous graphics that bloom and grow in nuanced and textured flat tints. Fresh buds in embroidery, exuding a beautiful chlorophyll-infused vitality with simplistic flowers, and daisies in full colour. Sensitive gardens where flowers are sketched like water lilies in the notebook of an impressionist painter, in the very heart of nature. A new herbarium is emerging for lace and embroidery, one that’s livelier, structured with lots of delicate foliage, sensitive lines, and jewellery-style insects.

ABSTRACT DELICACY A touching kind of discretion emerges in the way patterns are expressed. Motifs with graceful lines trace out a slender sketch, part flower and part random geometry. A graphic sensibility, underlined by softened shades, with powdered effects in jacquards, prints, embroidery and lace. Blurred sensations lend a note of contemporary romance, reminiscent of the Petit Trianon, an old fashioned and offbeat atmosphere. A deceptively rural and bucolic air surrounds the brittle innocence of a Marquise in the country, in jacquards and silkies at once refined and impertinent. – dancing lines fashion two-toned volutes, tracing out graphic and stylized arabesques. Wrought-iron style embroidery grows larger, expanding in volume, while lace is embellished with schiffly embroidery for subtle texture.

VIRTUOSO MONOCHROMES Fancies and plains come together for a minimalist, discreet opulence, with calm decorations and a hidden richness. Monochromes display all their nobility, in dense and sculptural silkies, in more everyday silkies, and in runny, enrobing knits. Sophisticated tone-on-tone embroideries, full lace with lighter handles, plain jacquards, damasks and embossed fabrics where patterns are expressed in subtle relief and matt/shiny contrasts.

“Recovery in the EU market will increase our exports” Explaining the expectations for the New Year in exports, Ibrahim Burkay noted that the average growth performance of the EU countries in the New Year is expected to reach 2.2 percent. Ibrahim Burkay, Emphasising that a likely recovery in the EU markets will also have a positive impact on the exports of Bursa and Turkey, has said that: “The developments in the market are very important to us. At this point, I find our President’s travel to France quite important. Along with the support of Spain and Italy to countries such as Germany and England, which shape European economy, the market growth will contribute to the start of a new process in the export of our country and our Bursa. We hope to recapture the 6th year-growth performance of Turkey that is realized between the years 2002 – 2008.
One of the World’s Most Prestigious Fairs Uludag Textile Exporters Association (UTİB) Vice Chairman Osman Nuri Canik said that Turkish companies have been among the most important actors of the world’s most prestigious fairs, such as Heimtextil, with their breakthroughs in the last 15-20 years. Canik, who also stated that Bursa has developed new moves, first in the Exporters’ Associations and then under BTSO’s leadership in recent years, expressed as follows; “ The chamber has also undertaken a very important role in bringing small businessmans and textile traders to these fairs along with new horizons. Here, SME’s have grown into medium; medium-sized companies have grown into large companies.I believe that the vision and teamwork of BTSO’s Chairman holds a pioneering qualification for Bursa. The work that is carried out under the leadership of UTİB and BTSO will continue to bring results”.

TURKEY AND THE EU MUST WORK AND FIGHT GLOBAL PROBLEMS TOGETHER Speaking at the 37th meeting of the Turkey-EU Joint Consultative Committee (JCC) TOBB President and the EU - Turkey JCC Co-Chairman M. Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu stated that Turkey and the EU, with their long-established relationships, must work together as never before against global problems. 37th meeting of the Turkey-EU Joint Consultative Committee (JCC) was held in Adana with the participations of TOBB President and EU - Turkey JCC Co-Chairman Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu, directors of EU-JCC Member NGOs, EU representatives and Minister of EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Ömer Çelik. TOBB President and the EU - Turkey JCC Co-Chairman Hisarcıklıoğlu gave a speech at the opening of the meeting, stating that Turkey-EU relations become more important than ever. Turkey and all EU countries are facing common challenges such as the influx of refugees and illegal migration, terrorism, cyberattacks, rising protectionist tendencies in international trade, climate change energy security. Hisarcıklıoğlu said that no country can fight alone against these problems. - Progress must be made in membership negotiations TOBB President and EU - Turkey JCC Co-Chairman Hisarcıklıoğlu said, “The generation before us fought WWII. As a result we have been left with the most important peace project of the world, the European Union. Now our responsibility is to create a more prosperous, safer and more peaceful world for future

generations. We, the EU-Turkey JCC Turkish wing, have come here with an extremely strong team. We are here as the president of our four trade union confederations, the president of the chambers of trade, the president of our farmers’ organizations, our employer’s umbrella organization, women’s organizations. We are here to show the importance we put on cooperation and dialogue in Turkey-EU accession process and Turkey-EU relations. In the process we are in, the top priority of Turkey-EU relations is to ensure progress in the accession negotiations. The accession process is essentially the basis for EU-Turkey relations. Again, there are areas we need to be in close cooperation and dialogue with such as economy, social policy, energy, fighting terrorism, Syrian refugees and foreign policy. In the same way, customs union and visa liberation issues should be included among our areas of joint effort. In economic terms, Turkey and Europe are intertwined. Turkey is Europe’s 6th largest economy. Turkey is the EU’s 4th largest export market. Turkey is the 5th country EU most imports to. Conversely, the EU is Turkey’s largest export market.
53
The EU ranked first in terms of foreigner investors in Turkey. In short, our economic relations have deepened immensely. Turkey and the EU economies, are linked together via many strong bonds. Relations with the EU have been a guiding influence in Turkey’s economic and political transformation efforts.” - A compass for the transformation process Stating that relations with the EU have been a compass for Turkey’s transformation process, M. Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu pointed out that, as EU-Turkey JCC, they’ve always given their support and contribution for the transformation efforts of Turkey. Hisarcıklıoğlu stated that they consider Turkey’s EU relations as a strategic priority, “In a nutshell, the EU-Turkey JCC is a symbol of the community’s support for the EU integration efforts of all sectors.” Underlining that EU membership process requires comprehensive reforms, Hisarcıklıoğlu said, “We have achieved fundamental reforms in the fields of law, the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms and market economy. We have deficiencies. There’s a lot of work to do. There are many steps to be taken. We are aware of this. We have to undertake these reforms anyway.
54
FAIRWORLD
We have to do these for our own people, for our own economy. We know that Turkey has the determination to carry out these reforms. The visa issue of the EU-Turkey JCC is always among our priorities. We must complete the visa liberation dialogue as soon as possible. We are very happy that your government has completed the necessary work and presented it to the European Commission. I want to thank everyone who has contributed to the process. Now we need to get results.” - The Customs Union must be modernized M. Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu emphasized that negotiations to modernize the Customs Union should be initiated and emphasized that it was not right to postpone this issue for political reasons. Hisarcıklıoğlu stated that this modernization would be beneficial for both the EU and Turkey. TOBB President said, “We, as the EU-Turkey JCC, need to emphasize our strong commitment to these issues. Another important issue is a strong stance against terrorism. Turkey’s fight against terrorist organizations such as PKK-PYD-YPG, FETO and DAESH, both domestically and internationally, unfortunately, does not see enough support in Europe. We want to see both NATO alliance and the European countries with which we are in partnership with, support our rightful and legitimate struggle against terrorism.
55
Essentially, the legal and moral responsibility of the Alliance and its partners requires this. Finally, I would like to express our great pleasure in addressing the issues on the agenda the EU-Turkey at a higher level at the summit on March 25. Turkey-EU relations are deep-rooted; based on sound foundation. We, as all segments of society believe efforts for the development of Turkey-EU relations should be continued. As Turkey-EU JCC, we will continue our work in Turkey to make it a EU member. - EU Minister and Chief Negotiator Çelik “Some of our friends who declare support for us while we fight DAESH fail to show the same support while we are fighting against the Syrian branches of PKK, the PYD and YPG,” said European Union (EU) Minister and Chief Negotiator Ömer Çelik and went on, “We need to be consistent about terrorist organizations.” Çelik, emphasized that Turkey is conducting a comprehensive anti-terror operation in Afrin and said, “Our fight against terrorism fully complies with international law, especially in the United Nations. Participating in an informal meeting of Foreign Ministers in Bulgaria, I heard sentiment along the lines of, ‘We think that this operation will weaken your contributions against DAESH.’ This is patently untrue. Turkey is clearly the most involved force on the ground against DAESH. Beyond declarations, we have put actions before our words as per our Operation Euphrates Shield and those before it. When the Republic of Turkey was assaulted by DAESH to many countries in Europe flew Turkish flag on public and other buildings showing solidarity with us for which we are grateful. Conversely when the PKK attacks in the same way, when our security forces are killed, when

we lose our people, we do not see this solidarity. We have never received messages of condolence following an attack by the PKK. I would like to draw your attention to this double standard.” - Turkey-EU JCC Co-President Annie Van Wezel European Economic and Social Committee Member, Turkey-EU JCC Co-President Annie Van Wezel also reported that they are also very satisfied of Turkey’s economic transformation. Wezel stated that they care for the benefit of all segments of the society from the prosperity and benefit which emerges from this prcoess. Underlining that they also have growing anxieties, Wezel voiced the discomfort felt in the repeated extension of the state of emergency. Wezel, emphasizing the importance of freedom of expression and the press, stated that the penalties for journalists are upsetting. Annie Van Wezel shared her views on fair trade, stating that they really care about fundamental rights. - Vice President of the EU Turkey Delegation Gabriel Munuera Vinals Deputy Chairman of the EU Delegation to Turkey Gabriel Munuera Vinals stressed the importance of Turkey as a very important trading partner for the EU. Pointing out that there are concerns regarding regression in fundamental rights, Vinals stated that they condemn the coup attempt occurred in 2016 and are in support of Turkey. Stating that they want Turkey closer to Europe, the European Vice-President of the EU Turkey Delegation Gabriel Munuera Vinals, underlined that Turkey is a strategic partner for the EU.

AN INTERVIEW WITH KIRSTIN HERRMANN
K
irstin Herrmann is the head of the drapilux design studio. Fostering creativity whilst maintaining high functionality is one of the challenges of her daily work. In this interview, the designer talks about new designs, trends and the sources of her inspiration.
drapilux launched a brand new dim-out generation at Heimtextil in Frankfurt. What does this mean for future designs? The technical development we have achieved for the pure white Trevira CS base fabric is a real breakthrough for us. We are now well positioned and are also able to print modern, fresh designs onto dim-outs for the first time, meaning we can give our customers exactly what they want when it comes to individual design. Thanks to this, it is possible to combine functionality with high-quality design and pastel colours. So what does the end product look like? With article 218, for example, we have consciously developed designs to enhance the white fabrics,
creating stylish accents using cool shades and defined shapes. It is exactly this which gives the series its Scandinavian style. As the designers, we worked very closely with the product developers and sales department when creating the new collection. The dynamic interaction and change of perspective that each department has to offer benefits us massively. Why do you think that the Scandinavian trend is still so popular? I think it just works. The shapes are chic and the design is simple and effective. The trend achieves a modern look whilst remaining durable. I have a sneaking suspicion that this trend will be with us for a while to come!
59
Where do you get your inspiration from? I gather my inspiration predominantly from the fashion and furnishing industries. For example, the leading trade fairs for interior design in Milan, Stockholm and Cologne are important sources of inspiration for me. The furnishing market is very ahead of new trends, even more so than the fashion industry, in my opinion. I also like travelling to the Netherlands, especially Amsterdam, and am often inspired by the people and narrow backstreets there. I find that my ideas and designs often arise from completely normal daily activities: spending a cosy evening in with friends, playing sport or taking a walk in the open countryside often arouse the best ideas.

With the Collection 2018 SAHCO is launching fabrics, wallcoverings and rugs for the highest demand of a modern lifestyle. COLLECTION TRUE A timeless and clear-cut collection. Unpretentious, casual, natural The word “modern” has always been the synonym for an expansion of perspective. A milestone of these aesthetics was the pavilion designed by Mies van der Rohe in Barcelona for the World’s Fair in 1929. White travertine and green marble were the highly elegant substances which showed that simple doesn’t have to be boring. Van der Rohes’s famous quotation “Less is more” was the inspiration for this collection, which transforms players which would otherwise play subordinate roles into protagonists. The basics consist of materials such as linen and wool, and form a carefully thought-out unity with highlights. Their colours confer a pleasant ease to any interior, and abstract motifs are designed with an eye for contemplation. The central focus of this collection is on harmony produced by the good proportions, the contrasts between monochromatic surfaces and the abstract designs which stimulate. The elegance for which SAHCO stands comes about by the interplay between the texture of its basic materials and the dynamic of its highlights. The approach of the collection TRUE is straightforward and restrained. Softly flowing, high-end decorating fabrics and charismatic upholstery materials show that purism has nothing to do with asceticism. TRUE seeks to open the room, thereby corresponding with our demanding, cosmopolitan, and flexible lifestyle.

Fall in exports for the Home Textile segment:

FAIRWORLD
Operating profit margins of home textiles exporters is seen falling 300 basis points (bps) from this fiscal following pressure on export realisations stemming from a shift in the dynamics of US retail, and a reduction in incentives after the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).
Rebate of State Levies to 2 percent from 7.5 percent and 3.9 percent, respectively, following the implementation of GST in July 2017. However, recently, partial relief was provided whereby incentives under the Merchandise Exports from India Scheme (MEIS) was increased from 2 percent to 4 percent.
This fiscal, the landscape is undergoing a sea-change. Many brick-and-mortal retailers in the US have pruned inventories and downsized stores to offset profitability pressures caused by the e-tail boom. In order to cushion the consequent fall in utilisation levels, Indian exporters have been enhancing their share of the business with US e-retailers, but at lower realisations.
Anuj Sethi, Senior Director, CRISIL Ratings said, “Our study of 63 firms (including 59 rated by CRISIL), which account for 70 percent of India’s home textiles exports, indicates that despite relief under MEIS this fiscal, average export incentives as a percentage of revenues will be lower by at least 200 bps,”
Domestic home textile firms have had a good run since fiscal 2012, with India’s share of US imports of cotton bed sheets and terry towels increasing from 34 percent to about 40 percent in fiscal 2017 because of cost competitiveness compared with peers in China and Pakistan. US accounts for a third of global home textiles market worth US $16 billion. Almost 47 percent of India’s home textile exports of US $5.3 billion last fiscal was to the US. Additionally, competitiveness continues to be impacted in Europe – an equally large consumer of home textiles as the US – with levies up to 10 percent duty on Indian products compared with free access to Bangladesh and Pakistan firms. Suppliers from Pakistan also benefit from better export incentives provided by their government. Domestic home textile firms, on the other hand, have been hit by the lowering of Duty Drawback Rate and
That, along with pricing pressure, is expected to crunch EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation), or operating margins to 16 percent starting fiscal 2018 from 19 percent last fiscal. However, demand for Indian home textiles will continue to grow at 8 percent seen in the recent past, helped by exports to traditional markets and better penetration in non-traditional markets such as Asia, Australia, South America and Canada. Rajeswari Karthigeyan, Associate Director, CRISIL Ratings said, “Given the still healthy demand, CRISIL expects the 63 firms to spend as much as Rs 3,700 crore to expand capacities in fiscals 2018 and 2019. That would be significant considering that Rs 4,600 crore has already been spent in the previous two fiscals.”

Heimtextil 2019: TRENDS IN A NEW GUISE Heimtextil is pushing ahead with the new concept for 2019: now that those responsible have worked out a completely new hall plan, they are turning their attention to redesigning the trend programme. With a meeting of international trend researchers on 20 and 21 February in Frankfurt am Main, the design experts have begun preparations for the trends of the upcoming Heimtextil (8-11 January 2019) at an unprecedented early stage. ‘The Heimtextil trends have enjoyed a worldwide reputation for decades. Showcased in the extensive and progressive way that they are, they are an essential component of our trade fair’, says Olaf Schmidt, Vice President Textiles & Textile Technologies at Messe Frankfurt. ‘That’s why it is very important to us that we continue to live up to our pioneering role with our new trend concept and offer our exhibitors and visitors a future-oriented programme. In the future, we will strengthen this showcasing above all at the digital level’. Starting with the meeting in Frankfurt, trend researchers from three European offices are working on the Heimtextil trends 2019/20. The British design studio FranklinTill will

once again play a leading role and is responsible for the implementation of the Trendbook. The Stijlinstituut Amsterdam (Netherlands) and SPOTT Trends & Business (Denmark) have joined forces with them to form the new Heimtextil Trend Council. During the two-day workshop, the three agencies compiled insights into current trends in interior design, architecture, fashion and art. They focused on developments in materials and textures, colours and patterns. Finally, they defined stylistically formative design themes from which a globally applicable trend forecast will be worked out in the coming months.

New: “Trend Space” in hall 3.0 When it comes to showcasing trends at the trade fair, Heimtextil will receive support from the Frankfurt agency Atelier Markgraph. As a specialist for communication within spaces, Atelier Markgraph is planning an interactive, future-oriented exhibition that will immerse trade fair visitors in the world of trends 2019/2020 using analogue/digital experience formats. In future, the trend showcase will be called “Trend Space”, replacing the previous “Theme Park”. Those responsible for this change have chosen hall 3.0 as the new location. As part of the new Heimtextil concept, the “Trend Space” can be found in close proximity to international textile designers, CAD/CAM suppliers and digital printer manufacturers. Heimtextil is thus bringing the progressive themes of trends, textile design and digital printing together on one hall level, creating an area full of inspiration and future technologies. Hall 3.0 – exclusively for exhibitors – will be opened on the eve of Heimtextil on 7 January 2019. Preview: Trend presentation in late summer The results of the trend researchers will be recorded in the new Heimtextil Trendbook. Exhibitors at Heimtextil will be sent the Trendbook in advance to assist in their product design and collections. Together with the Trend Council, those responsible for the trade fair will provide an initial insight into the new trends on 4 September. For this purpose, Heimtextil will invite representatives of the press to a preview, the framework of which will also be redesigned.

Over 15,000 People Are Raving About This Luxury Linen Set There are many rites of passage into “adulthood,” but few feel quite as satisfying as investing in luxury linens. It makes your space cozier and more comfortable, and it can actually help you sleep better. Take your typical cotton sheet, for example. The material is known for breathability and comfort when sleeping. Oeko-Tex certified cotton ups the ante by making sure your sheets are cozy and chemical-free. One well-known purveyor of this type of bedding is Brooklinen. For those unfamiliar, Oeko-Tex goes beyond the certification of just organic, and assesses not just the end result, but all stages of textile production from start to finish. This independent testing award certifies that substances which could affect your health, such as formaldehyde or pesticides, don’t make their way into your sheets. Brooklinen, a direct-to-consumer brand, focuses on giving customers quality sheets that won’t break the bank. It has a number of offerings, from comforters to candles, but
there’s one particular item that has thousands of people buzzing: its Luxe Hardcore Sheet Bundle (starting at $198; brooklinen.com). This set comes with a silky-soft flat sheet, fitted sheet, duvet cover and pillowcases for bed sizes from twin to California king. It comes in 14 different color and design options to suit your bedroom decor. The bundle is so good, over 15,000 past customers have rated it an impressive five stars. The site notes that by buying the bundle, you’ll save 25% compared with buying all the items individually. That’s additional savings on top of the fact that you’re scoring luxury bedding for a direct-to-consumer price. But what really seals the deal for us is Brooklinen’s lifetime warranty, which means that if your sheets ever pill, rip or fray, the company will repair or replace them. It’s great peace of mind for those who are a bit hesitant to jump into bed (literally) with bedding they haven’t seen in real life.

INTERTEXTILE SHANGHAI HOME TEXTILES – AUTUMN EDITION 2018 August’s Intertextile Shanghai Home Textiles embraces the revitalised home textile market in China.
A
s China’s economy is getting back on track with the GDP growth rate standing at 6.9% in 2017, the home textile market is also showing strong signs of recovery before Intertextile Shanghai Home Textiles returns this August.
With 23 years’ history, the show is well regarded as the most influential home textile trade fair in Asia. Over 1,000 suppliers from around 30 countries and regions will showcase a wide variety of home textile products ranging from bedding, bath, table & kitchen, curtains & upholstery and textile designs & technology to editors, whole home, sun protection, wallcoverings and carpets & rugs. In turn, over 38,000 trade buyers are expected to source at the fair. According to Askci Consulting, one of the leading Chinese industry research institutions, China’s home textile market has been growing steadily with an average rate of around 10% between 2010 and 2015. The overall size has increased from USD 18.4 billion in 2010 to USD 29.5 billion in 2015, and is expected to reach USD 38.3 billion in 2020. What’s more, the consumption of home textiles only accounts for about 29% of the total textile consumption of the country. Given the fact that the relevant ratio in developed countries such as the US and Japan is between 33 to 38%, there still lies huge room for the Chinese market to expand. Foreign analysts share this optimism, with Euromonitor expecting an annual increase of 5.3% and 5.9% for China’s entire home textile and bedding product markets respectively.

hanks to the improving quality and competitive price, there is also growing demand for China’s home textile products from buyers around the world. Customs statistics show that the export value for home textile products increased 2.25% to USD 39.5 billion in 2017. Among all China’s export countries and regions, the US has the largest share, followed by the EU, ASEAN and Japan. With all these favourable conditions in place, Intertextile Shanghai Home Textiles, to be held from
27 – 30 August, serves as an ideal platform for industry players to capture these business opportunities. “The rapid urbanisation and the consumption upgrade is unleashing unprecedented purchasing power in China. Participants can expect to benefit from this huge potential at our show,” Ms Wendy Wen, Senior General Manager of Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd added.

Dramatic bedtime story:
Comforters, duvets get bolder
90
FAIRWORLD
Colored, textured and patterned comforters and duvets are telling a dramatic bedtime story these days. “Bedding acts as a narrator to set the tone of the room,” said Anthropologie’s home textiles buyer
Brittany Peacock. “As the focal point of the room, the bed is a natural location for a pop of color or pattern.” Taking their cue from manufacturers and high-end design projects, consumers are moving away from the pale colors that once dominated bedroom decor and toward vibrant tones and patterns, said Joy Coulter of Couture Designs in New Albany, Ohio.
“In the more upscale magazines, I am starting to see more bright colors, especially in master suites,” she said. “The new trends seem to be getting away from so much neutral and gray. People are tired of having just white bedding, and they’re ready to try something bold.” Louise Traficanti, creative director for Eastern Accents , a bedding company in Chicago, thinks that homeowners were decorating with muted palettes for several years in response to the economic downturn and their own financial constraints. Things have begun to change, she said.
91
“Over the last two years, we’ve been really pushing more color, and seeing our customers respond enthusiastically to patterns and designs,” she said. More color in the bedroom also is a reflection of how much time people spend there, added Chris Chapin, co-founder at Company C , a home furnishings company in Concord, New Hampshire. With the bedroom functioning as a place to watch television, read a book or use technology, it’s not surprising that people are craving livelier looks realized through florals, prints and geometric patterns in dramatic colors, she says.

“People want color and some excitement in their lives. Color can represent what someone’s passionate about,” she said. “You walk in, you feel good.” The desire to decorate in a way that tells your story also has helped drive the use of color, Traficanti said.
“As people get more expressive about their own personality,” they are choosing more interesting colors and patterns for a “more curated look,” she said.
Eclecticism is in and “matchy matchy” is out, added Andrew Howard of Andrew Howard Interior Design in Jacksonville, Florida. A room should look as if “it grew over time — that it wasn’t bought on the same day with all the fabrics perfectly coordinating.” The practice of buying bedding in a bag — a complete set of sheets, comforter, bedskirt and shams — is on the wane, Coulter said. Texture and layering also contributes to the bold look, Chapin said. Increasingly, customers are mixing quilts, waffle-weave blankets, rich throws and other fabric pieces to create an interesting look, she said. Going bold with your bedding is also one of the most affordable ways to change the look of a room, said Suzy Cacic, an interior designer who blogs at BetterDecoratingBible.com.
“Bedding is an easy way to dress up your bedroom without having to stick to a commitment like painting your walls or purchasing new statement furniture,” she said. “Leaving your walls neutral and playing up your decorating with accessories such as your bedding is an easy and commitment-free way to bring in some great style to your space.”

CONTRACT BUSINESS SEES BIG POTENTIAL IN CHINESE MARKET
he constant growth of Chinese consumers’ disposable income not only results in increased spending on home textile products, but also stimulates the development of tourism. A report from the General Office of the State Council of China stated that the annual number of domestic trips has nearly doubled, from 2.1 billion in 2010 to 4.4 billion in 2016. It is expected that domestic travel-related consumption will reach USD 869 billion in 2020 and contribute to over 5% of GDP. The hotel industry in particular has benefited from this development, with the number of limited service hotels increasing 30% in the past seven years. This also implies remarkable opportunities for the home textile industry players doing contract business since quality products including furnishing fabrics, bedding & towelling and more will be sought after by the hotels. Intertextile Shanghai Home Textiles – Autumn Edition is organised by Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd; the Sub-Council of Textile Industry, CCPIT; and the China Home Textile Association (CHTA).
