Your support of tonight’s Gala helps the School continue to enrich its academic programs by providing such enhancements as new equipment and technology for classrooms, a robust professional development program for our faculty and staff, and a variety of campus improvements. Auction Rules 1.
On arriving at the auction check-in desk, you will be given a bidder card that lists your unique bidder number. (One number is issued per couple.) To bid in the silent auction, write your bid number on the silent auction bid sheet in front of the desired item. The bid number next to the highest bid amount at the end of the silent auction will be declared the successful bidder of that item. If a number is not legible, it will be invalidated and the next lowest bidder will be declared the winner. In the silent auction, the top bid constitutes a legal contract to purchase the item. 2. You may return to update your bid on silent-auction items, using the pre-printed bid increments on the bid sheet, until the auctioneer announces the close of the silent auction. To avoid being overbid, you may opt at any time to fill in the guaranteed bid “Buy It Now” which is 150 - 200 percent of value, and you will be declared the winner. (No one can outbid you.) 3. Some items in the silent auction are sold on a fixed-price signup basis. These include party signups: group events where seats are sold on a per-person or per-couple basis. These are sometimes referred to as Salon Parties. 4. To bid in the live auction, hold your bid card in the air, with the number facing the auctioneer. Most live-auction items are sold to a single high bidder; some are sold to a pre-determined number of bidders at a fixed (in a “sweep”) or escalating price (progressive bid). The auctioneer guides bidders through the bid processes. 5. When the auctioneer acknowledges your winning bid, this constitutes a legal agreement of purchase. The auctioneer reserves the right to reject partial advance bids, and has the right to make final determination of the winning bidder. 6. At check-in, guests will be asked to provide a credit card that is captured electronically and which streamlines check-in and check-out. Users of this quick and easy credit card settlement option can bypass the cashiering line at the end of evening, and move directly to fulfillment to pick up their prizes. 7. Payment arrangements must be provided on the night of the auction. Winning bidders must settle item payment at cashiering/fulfillment, which will open near the end of the live auction. 8. Bookkeeping is simplified if auction items are awarded to one purchaser only. Split payments for a syndicated (group) bid, whereby several bidders agree to split the price, can be arranged but may cause a slight delay in cashiering. 9. Personal checks, cash, Visa, MasterCard, and American Express are accepted for payment. Please make checks payable to FAIS or the French American International School. 10. Since FAIS is a 501-c-3 charitable organization, your payments are tax deductible as a charitable contribution, to the extent provided by law—generally, 100 percent of cash donations to the Special Appeal (Paddle Raise) and the amount paid over value for items or services. The School’s tax ID number is printed on auction receipts.

A portion of your guest ticket payment is also deductible—this fair market value (FMV) information is printed on the back of the invitation. Unless otherwise noted, all goods, services or certificates will expire and must be claimed and used within a year of the auction date. Restaurant certificates do not cover alcohol or gratuities. Hotel certificates are always subject to availability, may or may not cover tax, do not cover gratuities, and do not cover incidental purchases above what is noted on the certificate. All purchases are final and there will be no exchanges or refunds on items unless otherwise noted. Certificates, credits or vouchers obtained at the auction cannot be exchanged for cash and are non-transferrable without prior donor approval. The School reserves the right to modify, add or delete items to/from the auction. The School commits to acknowledge all items received four weeks prior to the auction date. Items received thereafter may be displayed and merchandised at the auction but may not be featured in the catalog due to print schedules. The purchaser assumes the responsibility to remove purchases from the auction premises on the night of the auction, unless other delivery terms are specifically arranged. At the close of the auction, purchasers are requested to retrieve certificates as well as tangible items from the fulfillment center, upon showing their quick-pay receipt or their paid invoice from cashiering. Motor vehicles and property requiring a title transfer or license may be claimed by contacting the donor, with coordination through the School’s Development Office, in the week following the event. Reservations for trips and vacation accommodations must be mutually arranged with the donor unless otherwise noted. No refunds will be allowed on travel packages for canceled tickets and/ or accommodations. FAIS has made significant effort to describe and catalog all items correctly, based primarily on donor descriptions, but does not warrant nor represent, and shall not be responsible for the correctness of descriptions, provenance or condition of items. Statements made in the catalog or at the auction shall not be deemed as warranty, representation or assumption of liability. Values listed in the catalog are estimates and are not warranted for tax purposes. Auction items are offered “as is” and “where is.” Persons issued a bid number (bidder) assume risks and hazards related to the auction and items obtained at the auction. Bidders shall hold the following groups harmless from liability arising from auction purchases: FAIS, its officers and staff, the auctioneer, auction coordinators, contractors, event organizers, caterer, sponsors and volunteers connected with the auction.

Class Projects Eiffel Tower in Technicolor Inspired by the Parisian cityscape, this impressionistic representation of la tour Eiffel consists of individual fingerprints from each child in Claire Petiteau’s preschool class. Each student selected their unique color and carefully chose where to make their marks. The children enjoyed applying paint with their fingers and marveled at the finished pieces (they made two!). Splash of Color The playful preschool students in Emilie McNeil’s class created a special watercolor painting, hand-pressing circles and artfully arranging them into a final color-infused masterpiece. Nature Garden Bench The students of Maud Guegan’s prekindergarten class were inspired by their IB unit, studying the outdoors. The children each drew on a 4' x 4' marble tile a picture of what came to mind when they thought of the outdoors. They also personalized their tile by writing their name on it. Each tile was weather sealed and placed on a garden bench that they had seen a picture of prior to doing their own tile. Watercolor Rooster Because 2017 is the "Year of the Rooster," and to celebrate the French's unofficial national symbol, students in Béatrice Szymkowiak's prekindergarten class were inspired to create their own beautiful painting of "le coq." Using watercolors and pastels on damp paper, each student contributed to this masterpiece that will light up your home with its vivid colors. Elephant Pouf The students of Françoise Metens' kindergarten class were inspired by the Moroccan theme of the Gala and helped to create a “Moroccan pouf.” Each student was given a fabric elephant cutout and spent time using stencils, images of inspiration, and their imaginations to decorate their elephant. The elephants were then applied to the fabric creating a fun and functional pillow perfect for any family’s home. Coordinated by Kristin W. Kilshaw and Regan Nelson. Le Coq Artiste Le Coq Gaulois (The Gallic Rooster) is one of the national emblems of France, dating back to the collapse of the Roman Empire and the formation of Gaul, now modern France. Sylvie Gbeteh’s kindergarten class created their own representation of this French symbol of bravery and determination, using silk paper in vivid hues, decoupaged, mounted on pinewood, and illuminated with lights. Colorful Moods of Kindergarten Each of the students in Camille Crampsey’s kindergarten class created two “masks,” one happy, one sad. Using a transfer technique, the films of these images were baked onto tiles and arranged in rows. The color scheme is identical for all, in whimsical pastels, yet each mask is highly individual in design. The resulting array of tiles is quirky and colorful! Coordinated by Wendy & Philippe Mazaud. An Interactive Tale This colorful piece, created by the students in Stéphanie Martin-Sewall’s 1st grade class, represents a story the students invented themselves, and requires the audience to listen to the story and move the magnetic pieces around the canvas to reflect the plot. With textured ink on a 3' x 2' magnetic white board, with black acrylic paint to make the outlines and some elements of the story, this is a striking and fun piece. Magical Trees The 1st graders in Laurence Le Mercier's classroom have been exploring our campus forest all year long and have made several visits to the four trees that they “adopted.” As they inquire about cycles and interconnection between organisms, they are learning that trees are our friends and we have to be friends to them. When snow blanketed Portland, students went around in their neighborhoods to take pictures of the snow-covered magical trees around them. Talking about trees using descriptive sentences and adjectives made them think more about what is so special about trees. This project tells the story of what is so special about trees, and the necessary and caring relationship between trees and people. Coordinated by Laurie Lesnard. Tree String Art Véronique Pain's 1st grade class created this unusual, striking piece after voting on what sort of image or word they wanted to create with string art. They carefully hammered nails to create the border and image outline of a majestic tree, then took turns to wrap string around and between each nail to fill in the negative space around the tree. Paris l'Amour Inspired by impressionistic collage artwork, the 2nd graders in Aurélien Petiteau's class chose to intricately collage the word AMOUR, using images that reflect what they love and what makes them happy. They were then tasked with scouring and cutting through magazines for objects, words, colors, and graphics that appealed to their senses and inspired their happiness. Shades of Azure Woodblock printing is a technique for printing text, images, or patterns used widely throughout East Asia and originating in China as a method of printing on textiles. The students in Jérôme Poncet's 2nd grade class experimented with this technique, creating several hand-printed pieces of fabric in various shades of blue, assembled on a large-scale canvas. Let the Sun Shine Reflecting on themes of diversity and heritage, students in Camille Rueff’s 2nd grade class painted a large canvas with a sky-blue background, emblazened with a vibrant sun. Each student wrote a message on one of the radiating sunbeams, about things like ‘’My hobbies are…", “When I grow up, I want to...’’, and other things uniquely important to them. Stumptown: How the World Works As part of one of their IB units in Jennifer Reineck’s 3rd grade class, her students studied how trees are houses to birds and insects, and have branches, leaves, and sometimes even flowers. These trees are part of a system, the forest, and that forest is part of the larger ecosystem. Following these concepts and applying them to their own world, the students used different media from acrylic to ink to create their houses, cut out of wood, to explore how their world works in the bigger picture. One wall is inside the house, one wall is outside, one wall has a character, and the other is their own choice of expression. All the houses are placed on a big round piece of wood, which symbolizes a tree trunk, and each house is magnetic, so that they can be shuffled. This village can be redesigned again and again in harmony, and is a clever illustration of our students’ understanding of systems and their relationships. Coordinated by Jennifer Reineck. Wall of Love This project, created by the students in Nadine Zaouk-Strapart’s 3rd grade class, was inspired by “Le mur des je t’aime” in Paris. Our wall of love was created to celebrate the diverse and dynamic school population we are blessed with at FAIS. Our school community is very rich in the number of countries that are represented here on our campus, and we take pride in our multicultural and multilingual community (36 different languages spoken in the homes of our families!). The Roots of Hope The inspiration for the 3rd graders from Nathalie Debrun-Sittler’s class was TREES, as source of life, nature, environment, and our future. The students chose to work with natural elements, drawing patterns of nature on pebbles and then organizing them to form the foliage of a tree. Unite for Change/ S'unir pour le changement Using a Japanese impression technique, the students collaboratively designed and created their representation of "people uniting for change" which was the PYP unit they were working on. For them, the blue and green colors, the word "liberté," the characters, and the monument of the Statue of Liberty all symbolize a revolution for change. Coordinated by Christina Henry de Tessan. Petit à Petit, l'Oiseau Fait Son Nid/Little by Little, the Bird Makes His Nest Students in Heimata Lemaire's 4th grade class visited a Pearl District handbag atelier, where they were given access to a multi-media mix of colorful materials including paper, wood, caning, wire, feathers, raffia, silk ribbons, and wool/yarn. Each student selected a bird stencil or silhouette to cut out, then picked materials to create their own bird, then collaborated to build its "nest." The students added unique found objects to the collaborative centerpiece, delighting in each new layer of texture and depth they built together. Each individual bird is lacquered and mounted at different depths in the 3-D picture to create groups of birds flying toward the nest, contributing to its artful creation. Chère Anne Roquette: Postcards from Portland Anne Rouquette’s book, Lettres de mon hélicoptêtre, is a wonderful story of a heroine exploring the world from above on her bicycle helicopter. The students in David Billeaud’s 4th grade class chose to depict their own journey into the skies. The result is a unique combination of 3-D wall art, with elements of Anne Rouquette’s own original work, combined with custom glass work by artist Ellen Bartholomew, and incorporating the students’ handwritten postcards (including their own personalized photo stamps by Helen Beavers of Firefly Photography). Hypertufa Bench Cédric’s 5th grade class decided to build a bench out of hypertufa, which is made up of concrete, peat moss, and pearlite. They worked on the designs as a class and put them together, each contributing and working hard as a team to complete this distinctive bench and matching planter in the same materials. Checkmate! Students in Virginie Calmé’s 5th grade class made their own chess board, with fired and painted clay pieces, on a wooden board. Willow of Dreams Students in Thierry Anne's 5th grade class were involved in every step of the creation of this beautiful piece. In collaboration with FAIS director of educational technology, Karen Wolfe, each student designed and printed two leaves using 3-D software. They then painted the leaves using colors and patterns of their own choosing, and placed them on a tree against the background of a large canvas. Each student then wrote and incorporated two poems (one in English and one in French), which are included in a book that accompanies the art piece. Coordinated by Sarah Prevost. Pacific Northwest Printmaking Students carved linoleum blocks to create this striking four-panel collection of prints. I Spy...Shadowboxes! Students in the 7th grade gathered random odds and ends from home to explore the theme: How can everyday objects be inspiring? Botanical Prints Cyanotypes, known as sunprints, were first used by British botanist Anna Atkins to record the translucent silhouettes of plants and algae in her studies. After learning the history of the cyanotype, our 8th grade students explored their own floral compositions to create this fourpiece collection of botanical prints.
