Bienvenue! A Message from the Head of School Bienvenue and welcome to the French American International School’s 26th Annual Gala Auction! Every year I’m so pleased to see our community join together to support the School’s efforts and celebrate its students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends. This year’s theme, Bloom!, is certainly apropos for this time of year, when our campus is ablaze with the colors of spring flowers. But it is the blossoming of our students that takes center stage, as they continue to flourish in so many different ways as we approach the end of the school year. Tonight is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate that while having a really fun evening. This night is also about supporting the mission of FAIS, as your generous donations help fund our 2014-15 annual operations in addition to this year’s Special Appeal project. Thank you, as always, for your loyalty and support, especially on this special evening. Wishing you the best,
Pam Dreisin Head of School

Auction Rules
On arriving at the auction check-in desk, you will be given a bidder card that lists your unique bidder number. (One number is issued per couple.) To bid in the silent auction, write your bid number on the silent auction bid sheet in front of the desired item. The bid number next to the highest bid amount at the end of the silent auction will be declared the successful bidder of that item. If a number is not legible, it will be invalidated and the next lowest bidder will be declared the winner. In the silent auction, the top bid constitutes a legal contract to purchase the item. 2. You may return to update your bid on silent-auction items, using the pre-printed bid increments on the bid sheet, until the auctioneer announces the close of the silent auction. To avoid being overbid, you may opt at any time to fill in the guaranteed bid “Buy It Now” which is 150 - 200 percent of value, and you will be declared the winner. (No one can outbid you.) 3. Some items in the silent auction are sold on a fixed-price signup basis. These include party signups: group events where seats are sold on a per-person or per-couple basis. These are sometimes referred to as Salon Parties. 4. To bid in the live auction, hold your bid card in the air, with the number facing the auctioneer. Most live-auction items are sold to a single high bidder; some are sold to a pre-determined number of bidders at a fixed (in a “sweep”) or escalating price (progressive bid). The auctioneer guides bidders through the bid processes. 5. When the auctioneer acknowledges your winning bid, this constitutes a legal agreement of purchase. The auctioneer reserves the right to reject partial advance bids, and has the right to make final determination of the winning bidder. 6. At check-in, guests will be asked to provide a credit card that is captured electronically and which streamlines check-in and check-out. Users of this quick and easy credit card settlement option can bypass the cashiering line at the end of evening, and move directly to fulfillment to pick up their prizes. 7. Payment arrangements must be provided on the night of the auction. Winning bidders must settle item payment at cashiering/fulfillment, which will open near the end of the live auction. 8. Bookkeeping is simplified if auction items are awarded to one purchaser only. Split payments for a syndicated (group) bid, whereby several bidders agree to split the price, can be arranged but may cause a slight delay in cashiering. 9. Personal checks, cash, Visa, MasterCard, and American Express are accepted for payment. Please make checks payable to FAIS or the French American International School. 10. Since FAIS is a 501-c-3 charitable organization, your payments are tax deductible as a charitable contribution, to the extent provided by law—generally, 100 percent of cash donations to the Special Appeal (Paddle Raise) and the amount paid over value for items or services. The School’s tax ID number is printed on auction receipts.

Auction Rules
A portion of your guest ticket payment is also deductible—this fair market value (FMV) information is printed on the back of the invitation. Unless otherwise noted, all goods, services or certificates will expire and must be claimed and used within a year of the auction date. Restaurant certificates do not cover alcohol or gratuities. Hotel certificates are always subject to availability, may or may not cover tax, do not cover gratuities, and do not cover incidental purchases above what is noted on the certificate. All purchases are final and there will be no exchanges or refunds on items unless otherwise noted. Certificates, credits or vouchers obtained at the auction cannot be exchanged for cash and are non-transferrable without prior donor approval. The School reserves the right to modify, add or delete items to/from the auction. The School commits to acknowledge all items received four weeks prior to the auction date. Items received thereafter may be displayed and merchandised at the auction but may not be featured in the catalog due to print schedules. The purchaser assumes the responsibility to remove purchases from the auction premises on the night of the auction, unless other delivery terms are specifically arranged. At the close of the auction, purchasers are requested to retrieve certificates as well as tangible items from the fulfillment center, upon showing their quick-pay receipt or their paid invoice from cashiering. Motor vehicles and property requiring a title transfer or license may be claimed by contacting the donor, with coordination through the School’s Development Office, in the week following the event. Reservations for trips and vacation accommodations must be mutually arranged with the donor unless otherwise noted. No refunds will be allowed on travel packages for canceled tickets and/or accommodations. FAIS has made significant effort to describe and catalog all items correctly, based primarily on donor descriptions, but does not warrant nor represent, and shall not be responsible for the correctness of descriptions, provenance or condition of items. Statements made in the catalog or at the auction shall not be deemed as warranty, representation or assumption of liability. Values listed in the catalog are estimates and are not warranted for tax purposes. Auction items are offered “as is” and “where is.” Persons issued a bid number (bidder) assume risks and hazards related to the auction and items obtained at the auction. Bidders shall hold the following groups harmless from liability arising from auction purchases: FAIS, its officers and staff, the auctioneer, auction coordinators, contractors, event organizers, caterer, sponsors and volunteers connected with the auction.

Class Projects Blossoms, Blooms, and Buds
This tiny glass-topped wood table brings nature indoors with sixteen individually created tiles. Our three and four-year-olds combined colorful pieces of glass in flower and leaf shapes to create fused glass tiles with vibrant background shades of blue and green. Copper insects and letters of each child's name personalize every tile. Coordinated by Beth Clifton. Children of Anne-Marie Luckett and Sue Inahara’s Preschool Class
Chihuly Bloom
This Chihuly-inspired piece embraced our Gala theme of Bloom! Some of our smallest artists painted cups in colors of their choice, which were then heated to their melting point; the blownglass "blooms" were then arranged in a quirky design. Coordinated by Lexia Frank. Children of Emilie Tarbel and Josiane Douglass's Preschool Class
La Chasse à l'Ours
"We can't go over it. / We can't go under it. / Oh, no! / We've got to go through it!" Inspired by the beloved story of a father and his four children going on a traditional bear hunt, these prekindergarten students interpreted the six landscapes featured in We're Going on a Bear Hunt and created these six detailed panels. Coordinated by Béatrice Szymkowiak. Children of Béatrice Szymkowiak and Janique McGee’s Prekindergarten Class
La Floraison
This glowing collage of fifteen glass pieces, each painted by one child, forms a delightful pattern that is then complemented by its natural wood base. Coordinated by Denisse Reyes. Children of Sylvie Gbeteh and Nadia Khazem’s Prekindergarten Class
CLASS PROJECTS - PAGE 2
Jardin des Roses
With the vintage pages of an old French natural history book as their "canvas," Eve's kindergarten students created this lively and colorful collection of flowers, as interpreted by each student, using watercolors and paper for a three-dimensional effect. Coordinated by Laura Donegan. Children of Eve Trolong-Bailly and Maryvonne Ferar’s Kindergarten Class
Portland: Rose City
A collection of student-embossed images representing our City of Roses. Coordinated by Laura Donegan and Henrike Fleuret. Children of Françoise Metens and Luc Bouveur's Kindergarten Class
Bouteilles Land
This sweet three-dimensional piece takes everyday objects—plastic bottles—and makes a garden of bright, blooming flowers. Students in Virginie's class cut and painted the flowers by hand. Coordinated by Seden Ceran. Children of Virginie Calmé and Nadia Khazem's Kindergarten Class
France as Seen by FAIS
"If I tell you "France", what is the first word that comes to your mind?" This is the question that the 18 first graders from Laurence & Erin's classroom asked our school's community. Teachers, students, and parents all shared their words, and thanks to the magic of technology a map of France was created showing that “Paris,” “Tour Eiffel,” “croissant” and “vin” were definitely the words that our community had in mind. Coordinated by Heidi Thistle. Children of Laurence Le Mercier's 1st Grade Class
Experiences
Using a Holga camera and black-and-white film, the students in this first grade class assembled a wonderful collection of photos—some representational and others abstract/surreal—for a final product that is wonderfully retro and a nod to the rich history of photography. Coordinated by Nadia Lamarti. Children of Nadia Lamarti’s 1st Grade Class
Always Look on the Bright Side
CLASS PROJECTS - PAGE 3
"Always Look on the Bright Side" is the sunny affirmation that these first graders chose to illustrate, with their own self portraits against a background of vibrant, fluorescent acrylic paint. This will brighten your home on even the darkest Portland day! Coordinated by Andrea Pastega-Vloon. Children of Pauline Joseph’s 1st Grade Class

This whimsical piece features the delightful story of Peter Pan brought to life, with the story's characters created from clay and displayed against the nighttime backdrop of Neverland. Each of the figures were handmade and painted by Alix's second grade students for this delightful threedimensional shadowbox. Coordinated by Nazanin Mansouri. Children of Alix Le Fol's 2nd Grade Class
La Joie du Jardinage
A nod to this year's Gala theme, Bloom!, these gorgeous cedar planters will be distinctive accents for your deck or garden. Every child in the class created their own whimsical flower tile to adorn the sides, and the planters are lined with easily-removable rubber liner pots. Materials generously donated by Ready, Set, Fire and Parr Lumber. Merci to Corey Morris for woodworking. Coordinated by Laura Donegan. Children of Jérôme Poncet’s 2nd Grade Class
It Takes a Village
It takes a village…to raise a child. Nadine's second grade class has envisioned their French "village" in this colorful framed wall art. Using oil pastels on colored card stock, the children assembled a collage of homes, businesses, and monuments, including the Eiffel Tower, to create their own unique version of Paris. Merci to Ken from Frame Central for his generous donation. Coordinated by Kim Patterson and Kenya Zappa. Children of Nadine Zaouk-Strapart’s 2nd Grade Class
CLASS PROJECTS - PAGE 4
Les Trésors dans l'Herbe
This gardenscape features insects, drawn by the students on loose paper, floating around in a surreal garden in their search for food or hiding places. Coordinated by Amy Duryea and Jennifer Reineck. Children of Jennifer Reineck’s 3rd Grade Class
The Naturalist's Cabinet
As part of their study of the insect world, this creative group of third graders explored the world of bugs in art, language, and science. Look through the glass of this natural fir shadow box and see their work table, scattered with drawings, specimens, and even poems about the natural world. Dytiscus marginalis, the large water beetle, sits side-by-side with bees, butterflies, and an iridescent blue scarab beetle. What a fascinating collection! Coordinated by Ursula Garcia. Children of Nathalie Debrun-Sittler's 3rd Grade Class
Le Parc en Papier
In their exploration of two and three-dimensional art, Cubism, and landscape texture and color, these third graders painted their abstract representation of FAIS' own Discovery Park, using acrylic paints and a glossy lacquer finish. Coordinated by Kyra Czar. Children of Stéphanie Martin-Sewall’s 3rd Grade Class
Keep Portland Wet
Inspired by their study of the limited nature of Earth’s fresh water supply, one of our fourth grade classes decided to represent the beautiful city of Portland in blue to emphasize how lucky we are to have an abundant access to water. They used a creative process inspired by an ancient Japanese technique, drawing distinctive features of Portland on foam boards, then covering them in blue ink paint with rollers. When they were imprinted on paper they made blue shapes outlined in white lines, creating a gorgeous Portland skyline of shades of blue. Coordinated by Aurore Molerus. Children of Aurore Molerus’s 4th Grade Class
CLASS PROJECTS - PAGE 5
Life in the Deep Blue Sea-Shirt
After learning that large, wasteful amounts of water are used to manufacture T-shirts, these industrious 4th grade students created a sea-scape tapestry of their own castoff T-shirts. Each student chose and handmade a sea creature to represent their own responsibility to conserve our world’s finite natural resources. The sailboats represent their teachers who guided them on this journey. Coordinated by Maria Kozo and June Kim. Children of Marion Rosier’s 4th Grade Class
Le Roi Soleil
This project was inspired by the installation work of Denmark-based Malaysian artist Amir Zainorin. Choosing Louis XIV as their iconic French subject, the children created a one-of-a-kind mosaic made completely with recycled magazine pages and glue. Great emphasis was placed on the tints and shades of each color to deliver a recognizable yet completely fresh interpretation of the Sun King. Coordinated by Carey Portzline. Children of Thibault Prat’s 4th Grade Class
Home Is Where Children Bloom
This charming village of colorful buildings is composed of numerous pieces, large and small, of fused colored glass, chosen and placed by these fifth grade students. This lovely, one-of-a-kind piece will brighten a sideboard or kitchen counter with its vibrant hues! Coordinated by Susan Yeh. Children of Cédric Strapart’s 5th Grade Class
Les Visages de la Nature
This gorgeous, ethereal tree is adorned with delicate layers of tissue leaves and bark, and beautifully illustrates our fifth graders' love of nature and the outdoors. The students cut and pasted layers of blue, gold, and green paper; the result is striking and will complement the walls of any room. Coordinated by Maud Guegan. Children of Maud Guegan’s 5th Grade Class
CLASS PROJECTS - PAGE 6
Selfie
For this ingenious photographic work created by fifth graders, profile photos were taken of each student, cut out, and placed along with their own self-descriptive words on a piece of acetate. This was then positioned on solar-sensitive photo paper that exposed the profiles and surrounding descriptions, and mounted on wood. Coordinated by Nancy Renwick. Children of Thierry Anne’s 5th Grade Class
The Pattern of Us
Inspired by the abstract, wallpapered work of artist Jill Ricci, the sixth graders used their budding painting skills to design and execute stencil patterns focused on personal interpretations of color, texture, text, pattern, and cultural symbols. Each student created four designs, from which one was chosen to be combined into a rich collage against a layered background gleaming with the rich colors and luster of an old Moroccan wall. Coordinated by Ursula Garcia. Students of Gilkey 6th Grade
In Our Nature
Inspired by the London-based Chilean artist Francisca Prieto as well as the ancient Japanese arts of sumi-e painting and origami, the students have created a work that studies the subject of a person's inner identity. Each student chose an attribute to describe his/herself, and using the sumi-e ink and brush technique, illustrated that attribute through symbols of nature. Each student's square illustration was then folded and placed amongst those of his or her peers. Because the folded squares are closing up on themselves, each attribute becomes cocooned or partially hidden, much like our inner identity can be hidden from those around us. Coordinated by Carey Portzline. Students of Gilkey 7th Grade
CLASS PROJECTS - PAGE 7
We Are What We Eat
Our eighth graders created a professionally bound, work-of-art cookbook. Each student painted their own page and wrote a homemade recipe focusing on our cultural diversity as represented though the food we eat. Complementing the recipes were drawings of the ingredients and the plants that they come from, connecting to the Bloom theme. Coordinated by Stephany Paull. Students of Gilkey 8th Grade

Salon Parties Momo-Making Party
Tashi delek! Join us at Bonnie Stewart's home in NE Portland to embrace Tibetan culture and learn to make Tibetan dumplings (momos) from the professionals. Local Tibetan restauranteurs and leaders of the local Tibetan community will show us how to make these delectable dumplings and a simple spicy sauce to accompany them. We'll steam them up and eat until your heart's content. Served with salads and imported regional beer, you cannot get a more authentic taste of Tibet. We will be using beef instead of yak meat filling to satisfy more palates, but even vegetarians are welcome to come learn the method and enjoy the sides. Talk to our chefs and other guests who have been to Tibet and learn about the warmest culture on earth. Look for the Tibetan prayer flags flying on the front porch! Chanting music will last only as long as we can stand it. DATE: Saturday May 3, 2014 $50 per person; 20 guests maximum; adults only please. Donated by Normund Auzins and Bonnie Stewart
