Bienvenue! A Message from the Head of School Bienvenue and welcome to the French American International School’s 27th Annual Gala Auction! Every year I’m so pleased to see our community join together to support the School’s efforts and celebrate our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends. Your support of tonight’s Gala helps the School continue to enrich its academic programs by providing such enhancements as new equipment and technology for classrooms, a robust professional development program for our faculty and staff, and a variety of capital improvements. The volunteer committee who planned Le Cirque, led by co-chairs Bonnie Stewart and Grayson Dempsey, put in many hours of thought, preparation, and planning into this evening. And, of course, all of the items you will be bidding on tonight were donated by generous folks in our community. Thank you, as always, for your loyalty and support, especially on this special evening. Merci beaucoup! Wishing you the best,

Pam Dreisin Head of School

Auction Rules 1.

On arriving at the auction check-in desk, you will be given a bidder card that lists your unique bidder number. (One number is issued per couple.) To bid in the silent auction, write your bid number on the silent auction bid sheet in front of the desired item. The bid number next to the highest bid amount at the end of the silent auction will be declared the successful bidder of that item. If a number is not legible, it will be invalidated and the next lowest bidder will be declared the winner. In the silent auction, the top bid constitutes a legal contract to purchase the item. 2. You may return to update your bid on silent-auction items, using the pre-printed bid increments on the bid sheet, until the auctioneer announces the close of the silent auction. To avoid being overbid, you may opt at any time to fill in the guaranteed bid “Buy It Now” which is 150 - 200 percent of value, and you will be declared the winner. (No one can outbid you.) 3. Some items in the silent auction are sold on a fixed-price signup basis. These include party signups: group events where seats are sold on a per-person or per-couple basis. These are sometimes referred to as Salon Parties. 4. To bid in the live auction, hold your bid card in the air, with the number facing the auctioneer. Most live-auction items are sold to a single high bidder; some are sold to a pre-determined number of bidders at a fixed (in a “sweep”) or escalating price (progressive bid). The auctioneer guides bidders through the bid processes. 5. When the auctioneer acknowledges your winning bid, this constitutes a legal agreement of purchase. The auctioneer reserves the right to reject partial advance bids, and has the right to make final determination of the winning bidder. 6. At check-in, guests will be asked to provide a credit card that is captured electronically and which streamlines check-in and check-out. Users of this quick and easy credit card settlement option can bypass the cashiering line at the end of evening, and move directly to fulfillment to pick up their prizes. 7. Payment arrangements must be provided on the night of the auction. Winning bidders must settle item payment at cashiering/fulfillment, which will open near the end of the live auction. 8. Bookkeeping is simplified if auction items are awarded to one purchaser only. Split payments for a syndicated (group) bid, whereby several bidders agree to split the price, can be arranged but may cause a slight delay in cashiering. 9. Personal checks, cash, Visa, MasterCard, and American Express are accepted for payment. Please make checks payable to FAIS or the French American International School. 10. Since FAIS is a 501-c-3 charitable organization, your payments are tax deductible as a charitable contribution, to the extent provided by law—generally, 100 percent of cash donations to the Special Appeal (Paddle Raise) and the amount paid over value for items or services. The School’s tax ID number is printed on auction receipts.

A portion of your guest ticket payment is also deductible—this fair market value (FMV) information is printed on the back of the invitation. Unless otherwise noted, all goods, services or certificates will expire and must be claimed and used within a year of the auction date. Restaurant certificates do not cover alcohol or gratuities. Hotel certificates are always subject to availability, may or may not cover tax, do not cover gratuities, and do not cover incidental purchases above what is noted on the certificate. All purchases are final and there will be no exchanges or refunds on items unless otherwise noted. Certificates, credits or vouchers obtained at the auction cannot be exchanged for cash and are non-transferrable without prior donor approval. The School reserves the right to modify, add or delete items to/from the auction. The School commits to acknowledge all items received four weeks prior to the auction date. Items received thereafter may be displayed and merchandised at the auction but may not be featured in the catalog due to print schedules. The purchaser assumes the responsibility to remove purchases from the auction premises on the night of the auction, unless other delivery terms are specifically arranged. At the close of the auction, purchasers are requested to retrieve certificates as well as tangible items from the fulfillment center, upon showing their quick-pay receipt or their paid invoice from cashiering. Motor vehicles and property requiring a title transfer or license may be claimed by contacting the donor, with coordination through the School’s Development Office, in the week following the event. Reservations for trips and vacation accommodations must be mutually arranged with the donor unless otherwise noted. No refunds will be allowed on travel packages for canceled tickets and/or accommodations. FAIS has made significant effort to describe and catalog all items correctly, based primarily on donor descriptions, but does not warrant nor represent, and shall not be responsible for the correctness of descriptions, provenance or condition of items. Statements made in the catalog or at the auction shall not be deemed as warranty, representation or assumption of liability. Values listed in the catalog are estimates and are not warranted for tax purposes. Auction items are offered “as is” and “where is.” Persons issued a bid number (bidder) assume risks and hazards related to the auction and items obtained at the auction. Bidders shall hold the following groups harmless from liability arising from auction purchases: FAIS, its officers and staff, the auctioneer, auction coordinators, contractors, event organizers, caterer, sponsors and volunteers connected with the auction.

Class Projects Let There be Light! This petite chandelier, created by students in Anne-Marie Luckett’s preschool class, is decorated with round semi-transparent and effervescent medallions of capiz shells. The students chose capiz shells for the adornment because they are sustainably harvested in the Capiz region of the Philippines. Every medallion features a digitally-resized piece or detail of artwork, individually selected and designed by each student in the class. The result is a piece that will brighten any spot in your home. Coordinated by Philippe and Wendy Mazaud. Children of Anne-Marie Luckett and Sue Inahara’s Preschool Class

La Tour Eiffel Experience a beautiful night in Paris from the comfort of your own home, with this exquisite multimedia rendition of the Eiffel Tower created by Emilie Tarbel’s preschool class. The students used a mix of watercolor and glue to create a deep blue Paris evening sky. They then reproduced the dazzling evening lights of the Eiffel Tower by carefully hammering shiny nails into the canvas and weaving gold string to outline the dramatic architecture of the Tower. This piece would hang beautifully in a playroom, hallway, living room, or bedroom—a lasting reminder of how lovely Paris is at night. Coordinated by Christine Chang. Children of Emilie Tarbel and Josianne Douglass’s Preschool Class

Tout est Super Génial! To showcase their class study of storywriting and to apply the photography skills they learned during a class workshop, the students in Béatrice Szymkowiak’s preschool class made a storyboard featuring LEGOs. They built different settings and vessels, they chose the LEGO characters, and they each took a photograph for the final work. Coordinated by Lexia Frank and Béatrice Szymkowiak. Children of Béatrice Szymkowiak and Janique McGee’s Prekindergarten Class

CLASS PROJECTS - PAGE 2

Shades and Waves of Blue

Maud Guegan’s prekindergarten students used the work of French artist Pierre Soulages to inform and inspire their interpretation of several seascapes, working with the subtle nuances of blue. In each painted wooden block, the students reproduced different aspects of the sea from different locations and in varying weather. The result is gorgeous: the blues of the water are present, but the shades of blue change. As a final step, the painted wooden blocks were assembled on a supported frame to form a final, multi-hued seascape of blue. Coordinated by Kim Fischer-Key. Children of Maud Guegan and Carole Le Pihive’s Prekindergarten Class

Le Monde de Couleurs

This acrylic-on-linen canvas painting was inspired by Jackson Pollock’s painting There Were Seven in Eight. For his piece, Pollock originally drew creatures and figures, but years later he returned to his canvas and covered his original renderings with expressionistic spatters of paint and movements of color. Each kindergarten student in Eve Prat’s class put their mark on their own work of art, using their imagination to first draw figures of their choice: action heroes, flowers, architecture, and abstract design. They returned to the artwork later, just as Pollack did, carefully selecting colors to embellish the original with splatters and blended puddles of paint. The result is a wonderful interpretation of Pollock, and simply a striking, beautiful piece. Coordinated by Julia Robertson. Children of Eve Prat and Maryvonne Ferar’s Kindergarten Class

La Dame Echecs Mélangée

It’s a board game . . . and a work of art! Each student in Françoise Metens' kindergarten class created their own unique pieces from clay, glazed and fired, to make this unusual and quirky chess and checkers set. Against a background of tiles, also of the class’s making, the black and white figures—animals replacing queens and kings, and other unusual shapes in place of pawns—will make a wonderful conversation piece for your home. Checkmate! Coordinated by Luc Bouveur. Children of Françoise Metens and Luc Bouveur’s Kindergarten Class

Boutique Batik

Batik is a method of decorating fabrics using wax and dye, practiced for centuries by natives of Indonesia, Africa, and India. Sylvie Gbeteh’s kindergarten class was lucky to have a professional consultant who creates beautiful batik pieces for Pendleton Woolen Mills, Tricia Langman, assist them with their own collaborative batik project. Each student in the class designed an image of their choosing, selected areas of the cloth to block out by brushing hot wax over them, dyed their cloth, and then removed the wax. The result is a group of elaborate, colorful, and wonderfully individual designs, assembled together in this large-scale collage. Coordinated by Sylvie Gbeteh and Nadia Khazem. Children of Sylvie Gbeteh and Nadia Khazem’s Kindergarten Class

Fenêtre Ouverte sur le Monde

This exquisite piece, created by Laurence Le Mercier’s 1st grade class, is a convergence of environmental consciousness, color, and creativity. The students were inspired by their discussions of time, place, and space and the images of French photographer and environmentalist Yann Arthus-Bertrand in his series "The Earth From Above." Using a reclaimed window from an old bungalow in Northeast Portland as their canvas, the students reverse-painted on its panes of glass with different shades of acrylic paint. Each pane represents an image from the students’ interpretation of “Vue du Ciel” or “Vision du Monde.” Coordinated by Yasodha Gopal, Henrike Fleuret, and Laurence Le Mercier. Children of Laurence Le Mercier’s 1st Grade Class

Tous en Coeur

The hands and hearts of Patricia Costa’s 1st grade class are featured in this beautiful and unique framed work. Inspired by the things that they determined were important to them at this point in their lives, each student created colors and patterns based on these themes that mattered to them. Framed by their own six-year-old hands in the shape of a heart, the grouping of these images gives a wonderful view of childhood. Coordinated by Laura Donegan. Children of Patricia Costa’s 1st Grade Class

CLASS PROJECTS - PAGE 4

Constellations d’Animaux

Inspired by their space inquiry, visit to the space museum, and focus on mathematical grids, students in Stéphanie Martin-Sewall’s 1st grade class transformed various animal drawings into a grid design using geometric lines and dots. The wire animals are intertwined and scattered across a painted bronze and black birch board. Coordinated by Stéphanie Martin-Sewall. Children of Stéphanie Martin-Sewall’s 1st Grade Class

This striking work illustrates the essence of Oregon, from our ocean beaches and dense forests, to our beautiful bridges, funky shops, and grand river flowing through our city. Each student in Alix Le Fol’s 2nd grade class chose and supplied individual photographs and wrote descriptions of their own special places in Oregon. Canvas prints were provided by FAIS grandparent Susan Tedder. A photo book comes with the piece, documenting the process and featuring photos of Oregon and each student’s written description, en français, opposite a photo portrait of themselves. Coordinated by Kim Pfefer. Children of Alix Le Fol’s 2nd Grade Class

Four Seasons

The students of Aurélie’s 2nd grade class have created a lovely piece consisting of four paintedcanvas panels, depicting a tree as it transitions through the seasons. Four small groups of students, each working on a panel, completed the painting using acrylics. The leaves were made using imprints from wine corks; photos of the students who worked on each panel were subsequently added. These wonderfully personal canvases have been lacquered and are ready to grace a wall in your home. Coordinated by Lee Anne Gabor, Natalie Grunkemeier, Nancy Lin, and Mary O’Connor. Children of Aurélie Macukjanis’ 2nd Grade Class

Concepts of Wonderland

Alice stumbles into the world of Wonderland. Is it all a dream? Is it her imagination? Will she get home? Not if the Queen of Hearts has her way. The students in Jérôme Poncet’s 2nd grade class created this gallery-style artwork, with laser etching on a square plywood panel. It is up to our generous parent bidders to show Alice the way: bid well and take Alice home! Coordinated by Remco Vloon. Children of Jérôme Poncet’s 2nd Grade Class

Les Bouilles Barbouillées

Students in Jennifer Reineck’s 3rd grade class explored the genre portrait using a variety of media, including graphite, watercolor, colored pencils, markers, India ink and collage on paper, then copied on acetate. These quirky, colorful mini-portraits give a wonderful glimpse of each child, through facial expression and their choice of colors and embellishment. Quotes from the students themselves say it all: “I liked this project because it gave me the chance to see what happened if I put colors all together on my face,” “I liked this project because I really got to express myself. I thought I looked ridiculous!” and “It was fun because you got to get out of your comfort zone. I was free to explore.” Coordinated by Rich Broadfoot and Jennifer Reineck. Children of Jennifer Reineck’s 3rd Grade Class

Les Couleurs de Nos Rêves

The students of Nadine’s 3rd grade class created individual collages inspired by the art of Rex Ray, a San Francisco-based collage artist known for his colorful, 60s-inspired work. Rex Ray often makes his own paper so the students painted their own custom papers with tempera paint. Then, keeping in mind composition, color, and form, the students drew inspiration from their own life while experimenting with the paper. The resulting collages are brightly-colored works of joy. Coordinated by Christina Tempelaar-Lietz and Nadine Zaouk-Strapart. Wood frame made by Corey Morris. Children of Nadine Zaouk-Strapart’s 3rd Grade Class

Tout est Possible!

These framed, black-and-white silhouettes were created by Nathalie Debrun-Sittler’s 3rd grade class. The dramatic visuals are accompanied by student-written poetry reflecting their interests and their own unique gifts, and how they might someday be used to affect positive change in the world. Coordinated by Laura Donegan and Nathalie Debrun-Sittler. Special thanks to Sebastian Provost and Joanna Empson (GNOME Foundation and Software Freedom Conservancy, Inc.). Children of Nathalie Debrun-Sittler’s 3rd Grade Class

Bridge City Reveries

What are the places and experiences that come to mind when you think of the Bridge City? The 4th grade class of Aurore Molerus took on this question for their class art project, remembering trips to the zoo, buying baguettes from St. Honoré, riding the MAX, and seeing the city skyline at night. They then took up brush and acrylic paint, and turned these iconic images into individual impressionist paintings, full of the vibrant whimsical spirit of Portland and its surroundings. The paintings have been collaged and framed into one beautiful art piece that will forever remind you of your child’s hometown. Coordinated by Ursula Garcia. Children of Aurore Molerus’ 4th Grade Class

Wham! Bang! Pow!

Inspired by the Big Top theme of this year’s Gala, the students in Heimata Lemaire’s 4th grade class undertook a playful study on the flags of France and the United States using acrylic paint on canvas with a gesso finish. Envisioning many creative ideas, they finally chose this star design together as a class. The final product consists of 36 small canvases, hand-painted by the students and then assembled to produce a spirited, visually complex piece of pop art! Cartoons, modernism, and optical illusions were deconstructed and built into this final piece, concepts of how the human eye constructs line and function are illustrated in the negative space between the canvases. Coordinated by Kyra Czar. Children of Heimata Lemaire’s 4th Grade Class

CLASS PROJECTS - PAGE 7

Le Monde de l’Eau

For their contribution to the Gala class art projects, our students wanted to incorporate what they learned during their PYP unit on all the ways that water impacts human life. This framed, shadowbox piece illustrates the class’s key message after their studies: we need water so we need to save it! Coordinated by Polly Bisquera and Lani Hayward. Children of Thibault Prat’s 4th Grade Class

Our Graph of Freedom

Can you make science out of art? And can you make art out of data? To answer these questions, the artists in Cédric Strapart’s 5th grade class have created a mixed-media piece that speaks from both personal and data-driven places. What you’ll first see in this delightful piece is a series of seventeen tree branches, painted in a style reminiscent of tribal art. The combination of nature and man-made creates something new and special as each artist has detailed his own unique branch. But there is something else going on: the colored bands on each branch are not mere decoration, they deliver data, coded in color for the answers to the following questions: What does each student prefer to do for fun when his homework and responsibilities are all done? What about recess? Who was born in which month? What is the class’s predominant eye color? To find the answers, you might want to follow the stripes of color to read the data. This is an intricate, colorful piece that skillfully blends science and art, with a beautiful result! Coordinated by Carey Portzline. Children of Cédric Strapart’s 5th Grade Class

World Skyline

Students in Thierry Anne’s 5th grade class take you on a world adventure via their sunset skyline composition, made with paint and the students’ handmade stenciled prints. This panoramic view features familiar monuments and architecture from around the world, selected and arranged by the students. Coordinated by Thierry Anne. Children of Thierry Anne’s 5th Grade Class

CLASS PROJECTS - PAGE 8

Cells Come to Life

Virginie’s 5th Grade students explored cell structure during their study of the PYP unit “Who we Are,” and decided to model their class art project on the concepts they learned. Using wool fiber to represent DNA, the students created their own version of nucleus within a cell. Using soapy warm water and pressure, they added additional colored wool and rolled the strands until the wool felted together into long, thick strands the size of muscles. The muscle strands were sliced into sections in a way that a scientist may see cells under the microscope. The sections were grouped together to express how their bodies are made of interconnected cells and systems. The result is a strikingly beautiful illustration of one of science’s most fascinating areas. Coordinated by Maria Kozo. Children of Virginie Calmé’s 5th Grade Class

Where the Wild Things Are

The 6th graders let their imaginations run wild with acrylic and watercolor paint on paper, and this work of art reflects their distinctive personalities. Each student contributed to this diorama of a unique fantastical world by drawing an original creature, structure, or land element. We have floating castles; crying, half-eaten gumdrops; two-headed dragons; a gaggle of ice-cream birds; and eyes everywhere. Somehow, the Illuminati became completely integrated into the work, though nobody is certain why. Embrace ambiguity! Coordinated by Stephany Paull. Students of Gilkey Grade 6

From Field to Fabric

Using raw wool roving, the 7th graders learned the fascinating art of wet wool felting to turn loose fibres into rich textile pieces, all depicting their favorite flowers. With soap, hot water, and lots of creativity later, they combined their individual felt pieces into a colorful collage, framed and ready to grace your wall with a little inspiration from the fields. Coordinated by Ursula Garcia. Students of Gilkey Grade 7

CLASS PROJECTS - PAGE 9

Object Stories

Gilkey 8th graders showed off their individuality by drawing objects of their choice that represented themselves. The result? Everything from volleyballs to the renowned PDX Airport carpet! After a small group of students worked on creating a porcelain tray and firing it, all the students applied their own personal drawings to the tray using an image-transfer process. Coordinated by Carey Portzline. Students of Gilkey Grade 8

414 & 415 Tenkara Fishing Experiences package 414: Multnomah Creek package 415: Eagle Creek You and a guest will join Rick Wilson at some of the most scenic fishing spots in the nation, right here in Oregon. This is a full day of guided backcountry Tenkara-style fly fishing for native rainbow and cutthroat trout amidst the waterfalls and crystal clear mountain streams in the Columbia River Gorge. Tenkara is a simple, but highly effective traditional Japanese fly fishing technique developed for high-incline mountain streams using a traditional rod with a fixed line and traditional Japanese fly patterns with no fishing reel. It is easy to learn, and you will catch LOTS of fish! This package includes all necessary tackle, equipment, instruction, freshly brewed Stumptown Coffee, Bowery bagels and Bakeshop scones, and a locally sourced, waterfall-side lunch prepared by ex-Zuni Cafe chef Timothy Bartling of Red Radish. The trip will involve some steep trail hiking, uneven terrain, and bushwhacking, and requires a moderate level of fitness. No prior fly fishing experience is necessary. Kids ten and over are welcome. Participants will need a valid Oregon fishing license. Date restrictions for Oregon trout season would make the window for redeeming these packages weekends between May 26 and October 31, 2015. Value: $600 Donated by Richard Wilson & Christina Henry de Tessan
