a message from the Head of School
Bienvenue and welcome to the French American International School’s 25th Annual Gala Auction—a chance for all of us to join together to celebrate our extraordinary community of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends. This year’s theme, The Best is Yet to Come, sums up the remarkable trajectory our School has been on since its founding 34 years ago. We are always getting better, and the future is bright with promise. Tonight is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate that promise . . . and to have a lot of fun! This night is also about supporting the mission of FAIS, as your generous donations help fund our annual operations in addition to this year’s Special Appeal project. Thank you, as always, for your loyalty and support, especially on this special evening. Wishing you the best,
Pam Dreisin Head of School

Auction Rules 1.
On arriving at the auction check-in desk, you will be given a bidder card that lists your unique bidder number. (One number is issued per couple.) To bid in the silent auction, write your bid number on the silent auction bid sheet in front of the desired item. The bid number next to the highest bid amount at the end of the silent auction will be declared the successful bidder of that item. If a number is not legible, it will be invalidated and the next lowest bidder will be declared the winner. In the silent auction, the top bid constitutes a legal contract to purchase the item. 2. You may return to update your bid on silent-auction items, using the pre-printed bid increments on the bid sheet, until the auctioneer announces the close of the silent auction. To avoid being overbid, you may opt at any time to fill in the guaranteed bid “Buy It Now” which is 150 - 200 percent of value, and you will be declared the winner. (No one can outbid you.) 3. Some items in the silent auction are sold on a fixed-price signup basis. These include party signups: group events where seats are sold on a per-person or per-couple basis. These are sometimes referred to as Salon Parties. 4. To bid in the live auction, hold your bid card in the air, with the number facing the auctioneer. Most live-auction items are sold to a single high bidder; some are sold to a pre-determined number of bidders at a fixed (in a “sweep”) or escalating price (progressive bid). The auctioneer guides bidders through the bid processes. 5. When the auctioneer acknowledges your winning bid, this constitutes a legal agreement of purchase. The auctioneer reserves the right to reject partial advance bids, and has the right to make final determination of the winning bidder. 6. At check-in, guests will be asked to provide a credit card that is captured electronically and which streamlines check-in and check-out. Users of this quick and easy credit card settlement option can bypass the cashiering line at the end of evening, and move directly to fulfillment to pick up their prizes. 7. Payment arrangements must be provided on the night of the auction. Winning bidders must settle item payment at cashiering/fulfillment, which will open near the end of the live auction. 8. Bookkeeping is simplified if auction items are awarded to one purchaser only. Split payments for a syndicated (group) bid, whereby several bidders agree to split the price, can be arranged but may cause a slight delay in cashiering. 9. Personal checks, cash, Visa, MasterCard, and American Express are accepted for payment. Please make checks payable to FAIS or the French American International School. 10. Since FAIS is a 501-c-3 charitable organization, your payments are tax deductible as a charitable contribution, to the extent provided by law—generally, 100 percent of cash donations to the Special Appeal (Paddle Raise) and the amount paid over value for items or services. The School’s tax ID number is printed on auction receipts.

A portion of your guest ticket payment is also deductible—this fair market value (FMV) information is printed on the back of the invitation. Unless otherwise noted, all goods, services or certificates will expire and must be claimed and used within a year of the auction date. Restaurant certificates do not cover alcohol or gratuities. Hotel certificates are always subject to availability, may or may not cover tax, do not cover gratuities, and do not cover incidental purchases above what is noted on the certificate. All purchases are final and there will be no exchanges or refunds on items unless otherwise noted. Certificates, credits or vouchers obtained at the auction cannot be exchanged for cash and are non-transferrable without prior donor approval. The School reserves the right to modify, add or delete items to/from the auction. The School commits to acknowledge all items received four weeks prior to the auction date. Items received thereafter may be displayed and merchandised at the auction but may not be featured in the catalog due to print schedules. The purchaser assumes the responsibility to remove purchases from the auction premises on the night of the auction, unless other delivery terms are specifically arranged. At the close of the auction, purchasers are requested to retrieve certificates as well as tangible items from the fulfillment center, upon showing their quick-pay receipt or their paid invoice from cashiering. Motor vehicles and property requiring a title transfer or license may be claimed by contacting the donor, with coordination through the School’s Development Office, in the week following the event. Reservations for trips and vacation accommodations must be mutually arranged with the donor unless otherwise noted. No refunds will be allowed on travel packages for canceled tickets and/or accommodations. FAIS has made significant effort to describe and catalog all items correctly, based primarily on donor descriptions, but does not warrant nor represent, and shall not be responsible for the correctness of descriptions, provenance or condition of items. Statements made in the catalog or at the auction shall not be deemed as warranty, representation or assumption of liability. Values listed in the catalog are estimates and are not warranted for tax purposes. Auction items are offered “as is” and “where is.” Persons issued a bid number (bidder) assume risks and hazards related to the auction and items obtained at the auction. Bidders shall hold the following groups harmless from liability arising from auction purchases: FAIS, its officers and staff, the auctioneer, auction coordinators, contractors, event organizers, caterer, sponsors and volunteers connected with the auction.

Class Projects Primal Portlandia! Paint Tapestry
Let your mind wander back to a simpler time and reconnect with your primitive soul through this amazing work of art entirely created by Anne-Marie Luckett’s preschool class. Every student contributed to this hand-sewn creation, which features raw organic silk, recycled local farm burlap, and hand-formed clay adornments, backed by 100 percent felted lambswool. This attention-grabbing piece will be a guaranteed conversation piece. Coordinated by Kursteen Price.
Les Lumières de la Tour Eiffel
Inspired by the French artistic movement called Orphism, an abstract artistic movement that illustrated the human sensation of color, the preschoolers used paints and their fingers to depict the Eiffel Tower. Using their own unique color, each child fingerprinted within a handmade stencil. Through the collection of all of their prints, the sensation of one of France’s most painted and photographed structures comes to life. Coordinated by Aimee Watkins Litch.
Le Voyage
Inspired by the migration of the monarch butterflies, the students explored and imagined the butterflies’ journey from Canada to Southern Mexico. Each student sculpted a butterfly out of red clay and glazed it. The cloud of butterflies, glued onto a piece of Ziricote wood, a native tree of Southern Mexico, is a tribute to the fleeting beauty of the monarch butterflies. The project is also intended to bring attention to the danger of their extinction. Coordinated by Béatrice Szymkowiak with the help of Janique McGee, Nicole Taylor, Angela Black, Seden Ceran, and Henrike & Bertrand Fleuret.

C’est Moi, C’est Nous! This installation of cyanotype photographs was created by our little ones using professional materials, such as cyanotype photographic paper. A picture of each child was traced over on transparent paper and decorated according to their inspiration. Photographs appearing on the paper under light exposure were then washed with clear tap water. Each child’s art work was put together and framed. The result is fascinating! Coordinated by Yeva Perry.
La Forêt Enchantée
Back by popular demand, this impressionistic glass painting, done in reverse, uses a vintage window from a coastal home as its canvas. These amazing prekindergarteners used their budding knowledge of the art of story-telling and their own individual creativity to fashion this abstract, citrus- and autumnal-colored, whimsical forest. The lucky bidder could hang this beautiful piece as a stained glass window, backlit on a wall (as displayed), or simply treasured as a cherished mantelpiece. Each tree trunk depicts the artist’s name, and the inner pane of glass has an imperfection that contributes to the unique vintage character of the piece. The highest bidder will have a two for one deal: the option of displaying the art form in their home as is and/or taking the designers up on their offer to create another custom piece that matches the decor of their own home, done with the children and back-lit if so desired. Media: acrylic on vintage glass. Underwritten and coordinated by Todd Caulfield (lighting design) and Yasodha Gopal (art design).
Mets la Main sur la Table
Part of the students’ studies in this kindergarten class has been the examination of the differences among everyone. Using special play dough, they have created their own handprint and decorated it, to show how each one of us is different. Coordinated by Johan van de Groenendaal.
class projects- page 3
Vivre dans l’Imaginaire
This kindergarten class explored the concept of imagination. The young artists envisioned themselves in their favorite places or imagined themselves as their favorite characters. Along this journey of self-exploration, they problem-solved ways to visualize their ideas, which are chronicled in the book that accompanies the framed artwork. The result is a wonderful collage of creative and innovative art creations. This project allowed the kindergarteners to literally immerse themselves into their art! It is only through our imaginations that the ideas of tomorrow come to life. Media: watercolor, butcher paper, and acrylic paint. Art Project concept and coordination by Lubna Qureshi.
Tout Mélangé
Local artist Marc Rivers collaborated with this kindergarten class to create an eyecatching piece, aptly titled “Tout Mélangé,” or “All Mixed Up.” A wide array of photographs was taken of each child in the class, and then a canvas was embellished with different parts of their bodies and heads. The result of all their imagination and hard work is a fascinating collage. Coordinated by Marc Rivers.
The World in Pictures
This art project took the children on fascinating journeys around the world, and was motivated by learning activities in the classroom. As they go from continent to continent, they meet new friends; learn about their art, culture, food, and festivities; explore the nature and wildlife; and also visit the notable landmarks. All these experiences are then reflected in this distinctive art piece, which illustrates the students’ reflection and appreciation of the similarities and differences between us and our way of life with those of others residing in various other parts of our planet. As students inquired about tools to identify space around them, they discovered maps of all sorts, sizes, and use. Coordinated by Anna-Gaëlle Marshall and Nazanin Mansouri.

Picasso Meets Street Art For this art project, students imagined what Picasso might create as a street artist. The
result was a stencil of one his muses, Dora Maar, which was then spray painted and painted on an old desk table. Material: spray paint, paint, and stencils. Coordinated by Caroline Bergstrom.
The Best is yet to Come In this 3-D wooden block/watercolor project, our students gave lots of thought to what
things currently in their lives represent “the best.” They then dreamed of what, in their future, could still be part of that “best.” What resulted is a colorful wooden watercolor display of things our students love now and hope to have as part of their lives as they grow. This collection is full of positives — part-reality, part-dream. A true celebration of our students’ “best.” Coordinated by Madame Pauline and Laura Donegan, with special woodworking assistance from Corey Morris. Thank you to Parr Lumber for donating the project materials!
Copper Bird Project This glowing representation of student work wondrously combines art and nature. Each
student has carefully etched a songbird onto copper sheets, which were then antiqued as a group and beautifully framed. This student creation was supervised by Jérôme Poncet and coordinated by Regine Priso; guest teacher Kathy Mier, a local artist, provided invaluable assistance
Jardin d’Imagination Second graders have wonderful imaginations. The class of Nadine Zaouk-Strapart used theirs to create a window onto a fantasy garden filled with multicolored flowers, snails with pebble shells, bright birds, and fancy foliage. The children drew their fun ideas in pencil, and the most whimsical doodles from each were combined into a joint design. They then tinted this final design with watercolor pencils, after which the four panels were transferred to a reclaimed window frame. Look through it and see the beautiful garden that the children see! Coordinated by Nancy Renwick and Ursula Garcia.

A Study in Scale
Every student in Florence Bezault’s 2nd grade class was challenged to imagine what it would be like to shrink, and then interact at their new diminutive size with a small (now large) everyday object of their choice. Digital photographs of the students in different poses were taken, and then the students carefully cut their images and mounted them image-down on black paper, to make inverse silhouettes at small scale. These negativecutout silhouettes were printed on plastic and lacquered onto panels of wood; the 3-D effect of the students’ chosen objects superimposed on the silhouettes brought to life this “study in scale.” Coordinated by Lee Rockford, Kyra Czar, and Florence Bezault.
Spring Bouquet: A Painted Steel Flower Arrangement This wonderful flower arrangement is guaranteed to be fresh year-round. Artist Gilles Neuray and Jennifer Reineck worked with third graders to bring their observance of real flowers, in art and science, to life through their own flower drawings on paper. Gilles took these drawings and cut them out in metal, on which the students did a stencil design and spray painted. A poem was added, varnish was applied, and then the students attached their flowers onto metal stems to make a beautiful spring bouquet. Coordinated by Gilles Neuray and Jennifer Reineck.
An Expression of Self
For this art project, the children have taken inspiration from the Cuban artist Ruben Toledo. Toledo is known for his fashion illustrations and painterly style. The students experimented with acrylic pens in different thicknesses and used broad, painterly strokes as they illustrated witty and incisive portraits of themselves, which were collaged together to produce a contemporary and memorable piece of art. Coordinated by Colleen Sandieson.
class projects - page 6
A Burst of Wildlife - Un endroit sauvage
The children of Stéphanie Martin-Sewall’s 3rd grade class used their activities with the Audubon Society of Portland to inform and inspire this distinctive work of art. Each student illustrated (and annotated in Latin) a creature indigenous to Oregon, using fineline black ink. They additionally created papier maché bowls to represent the colorful natural environment in which Pacific Northwest animals and insects live. All of these artwork creations were mounted onto birch wood, in a 3-D mixed-media display of Oregon’s natural habitat. Coordinated by Carey Portzline.
Un Ecran Médiévale de Lettres
Madame Rosier’s 4th grade class has been studying medieval history, and in their research studied how books and letters were written and the many different ornate scripts of the time. For the project, each student picked a letter (or two), and traced it onto vellum. From there each letter was scanned and printed onto canvas, and the students then painted each letter using acrylic paint. Each letter was then mounted into its own frame to create a beautiful alphabetic room screen. Coordinated by Nancy Renwick.
Sous Marin Glass Platter
The students in Aurore Quain’s 4th grade class were inspired by their work with the PYP unit, “How the Availability of Water Impacts People,” when developing the theme for their art project. Each of the students sketched various undersea creatures, and then selected one of their pieces to use in the final production of this fused glass platter. Working with the instructors from Portland glass studio Live Love Laugh Glass, the students worked together in teams, cutting and shaping the glass to create several square pieces that depict part of an underwater scene. These squares, all distinctive and unique, were then fused together to create this piece that is both useful and beautiful. Coordinated by Susan Yeh.
class projects- page 7
Notre Village
While studying the Middle Ages in class, the students took inspiration from photographs of villages in Provence, and used curriculum-based geometric techniques to create planes and angles to make their own line drawings of a provençal house. The houses were then coalesced into a village, after which the children painted their individual houses using various watercolors. Coordinated by Anne Mauro.
Le Banc de Jardin
This gorgeous mosaic tile garden bench was created to memorialize the 2013 FAIS graduating class. The students hand-painted ceramic tiles with fun French cultural icons to create a festive mosaic to memorialize their years at FAIS. This sturdy outdoor bench is made of beautiful eucalyptus wood, and will be the perfect complement to your garden or patio. Coordinated by Laura and Jason Beane.
Portland...Rêvant de Paris
Fifth grade is all about discovering Portland, as we show off our city to visiting exchange students, and discovering Paris, when the year culminates in a trip to the City of Lights. This class took their experiences and their dreams, and turned them into a cityscape magically mingling the two places. The Portland skyline at dusk is boldly captured in acrylic on canvas panels, each painted individually by one child, with the shimmering reflection in the river glinting of Paris’s famous outlines. Coordinated by Ursula Garcia.

Digital Art with Student-Chosen Themes This project mixes drawing with drama! Students dressed up in costumes, had their hair and make-up done, and posed in fun ways for their class theme. Each 6th grade class voted on a theme they thought was interesting and would make a good work of art. What are middle schoolers interested in these days? Portlandia, what’s in the refrigerator, expressing themselves, and the Hunger Games. After the images were collected and put together in Adobe Photoshop, the photos were printed and mounted onto maple boards. Coordinated by Stephany Paull; photoshoot, hair, and makeup coordinated by Carey Portzline and Lori Prichard.
Scales of a Fish
For this project, 7th graders expressed their creativity through drawing or painting their own fish scale, using any art mediums they desired. Students started by spray-painting the background using “free-style” techniques, then, after much deliberation on the colors each fish should be, painted the fish bodies with acrylic paint. Finally, they spraypainted the outline of the male and female fish using stencils they cut themselves. (Of course, the boy scales are on the boy fish and the girls scales are on the girl fish.) This final work show how creative and dynamic this class is! Coordinated by Stephany Paull.
Cities from Around the World
What an international group of students we have at our school, and how well that shows through this project! Each student selected their own monument, building, public sculpture, or other part of a city. Many well-known buildings and monuments are present, such as the Eiffel Tower, Sydney Opera house, and the Great Pyramids of Egypt, but many lesser known monuments are also present, such as the Freedom Monument of Latvia or the Jested Tower of the Czech Republic. They then incorporated distinctive images of nature and animals, culture, and public art of different cities. Every student worked tirelessly to finish this work of art with such a high degree of craftsmanship, with individual contributions from all. Coordinated by Stephany Paull.

How to celebrate treasures from Belgium and Oregon? With Beer!
This basket will bring you on a journey from Belgium to Oregon (with a quick stop in California). From traditional Belgian beers (Saison Dupont, Kasteel and Maredsous) to their aspiring PDX “copycats” (Seizoen and The Commons), and their cousins (Double Mountain, Good Life, Hair of the Dog), discover other wonderful brews Portland offers: newer beers (Heater Allen; the smoky one is ideal with a BBQ meal!), aged ones (in Pinot barrel-aged Long, Bourbon barrel-aged Full Sail), and fun ones (Hub, Flat Tail). Let some of them age for greater flavor (Collage, California’s Sucaba), or take others on a hike (Base Camp – made for adventure!). Enjoy them all.
