Bienvenue!
A Message from the Head of School Bienvenue! Welcome to Imaginez! the French American International School’s 23rd Annual Gala — a celebration of our children, teachers, staff, alumni, and community. I am delighted that you are joining in tonight’s festivities and sincerely wish everyone a fantastical experience. Tonight’s fête is not only an opportunity for us to reconnect with one another in the FAIS community, but it’s also an occasion for us to celebrate the important mission of the School, centered around the nearly 500 children who benefit from our programs—from preschool through grade eight. This evening’s proceeds will support the School’s mission by helping fund annual operations in addition to this year’s Special Appeal project. Imagine the possibilities and bid often! Thank you in advance for making a difference at FAIS! Best wishes for a wonderful evening! Amicalement,
Pam Dreisin Head of School

Auction Rules
1.
On arriving at the auction check-in desk, you will be given a bidder card that lists your unique bidder number. (One number is issued per couple.) To bid in the silent auction, write your bid number on the silent auction bid sheet in front of the desired item. The bid number next to the highest bid amount at the end of the silent auction will be declared the successful bidder of that item. If a number is not legible, it will be invalidated and the next lowest bidder will be declared the winner. In the silent auction, the top bid constitutes a legal contract to purchase the item.
2.
You may return to update your bid on silent-auction items, using the pre-printed bid increments on the bid sheet, until the auctioneer announces the close of the silent auction. To avoid being overbid, you may opt at any time to fill in the guaranteed bid “Buy It Now” which is 150 - 200 percent of value, and you will be declared the winner. (No one can outbid you.)
3.
Some items in the silent auction are sold on a fixed-price signup basis. These include party signups: group events where seats are sold on a per-person or per-couple basis. These are sometimes referred to as Easel Parties.
4.
To bid in the live auction, hold your bid card in the air, with the number facing the auctioneer. Most live-auction items are sold to a single high bidder; some are sold to a pre-determined number of bidders at a fixed (in a “sweep”) or escalating price (progressive bid). The auctioneer guides bidders through the bid processes.
5.
When the auctioneer acknowledges your winning bid, this constitutes a legal agreement of purchase. The auctioneer reserves the right to reject partial advance bids, and has the right to make final determination of the winning bidder.
6.
At check-in, guests will be asked to provide a credit card that is captured electronically and which streamlines check-in and check-out. Users of this quick and easy credit card settlement option can bypass the cashiering line at the end of evening, and move directly to fulfillment to pick up their prizes.
7.
Payment arrangements must be provided on the night of the auction. Winning bidders must settle item payment at cashiering/fulfillment, which will open near the end of the live auction.
8.
Bookkeeping is simplified if auction items are awarded to one purchaser only. Split payments for a syndicated (group) bid, whereby several bidders agree to split the price, can be arranged but may cause a slight delay in cashiering.
9.
Personal checks, cash, Visa, MasterCard, and American Express are accepted for payment. Please make checks payable to FAIS or the French American International School.
10. Since FAIS is a 501-c-3 charitable organization, your payments are tax deductible as a charitable contribution, to the extent provided by law—generally, 100 percent of cash donations to the Special Appeal (Paddle Raise) and the amount paid over value for items or services. The School’s tax ID number is printed on auction receipts.
Auction Rules
11. A portion of your guest ticket payment is also deductible—this fair market value (FMV) information is printed on the back of the invitation RSVP. 12. Unless otherwise noted, all goods, services or certificates will expire and must be claimed and used within a year of the auction date. Restaurant certificates do not cover alcohol or gratuities. Hotel certificates are always subject to availability, may or may not cover tax, do not cover gratuities, and do not cover incidental purchases above what is noted on the certificate. 13. All purchases are final and there will be no exchanges or refunds on items unless otherwise noted. Certificates, credits or vouchers obtained at the auction cannot be exchanged for cash. 14. The School reserves the right to modify, add or delete items to/from the auction. The School commits to acknowledge all items received four weeks prior to the auction date. Items received thereafter may be displayed and merchandised at the auction but may not be featured in the catalog due to print schedules. 15. The purchaser assumes the responsibility to remove purchases from the auction premises on the night of the auction, unless other delivery terms are specifically arranged. At the close of the auction, purchasers are requested to retrieve certificates as well as tangible items from the fulfillment center, upon showing their quick-pay receipt or their paid invoice from cashiering. 16. Motor vehicles and property requiring a title transfer or license may be claimed by contacting the donor, with coordination through the School’s Development Office, in the week following the event. 17. Reservations for trips and vacation accommodations must be mutually arranged with the donor unless otherwise noted. No refunds will be allowed on travel packages for canceled tickets and/or accommodations. 18. FAIS has made significant effort to describe and catalog all items correctly, based primarily on donor descriptions, but does not warrant nor represent, and shall not be responsible for, the correctness of descriptions, provenance or condition of items. Statements made in the catalog or at the auction shall not be deemed as warranty, representation or assumption of liability. Values listed in the catalog are estimates and are not warranted for tax purposes. Auction items are offered “as is” and “where is.” 19. Persons issued a bid number (bidder) assume risks and hazards related to the auction and items obtained at the auction. Bidders shall hold the following groups harmless from liability arising from auction purchases: FAIS, its officers and staff, the auctioneer, auction coordinators, contractors, event organizers, caterer, sponsors and volunteers connected with the auction.

The illustrations were then captured in encaustic wax and mounted on a brushed stainless steel accordion, simulating the “flag bookbinding" technique. The work appears as a permanently open book, and hangs on the wall. Coordinated by Carey Portzline, Chad Berset-Price, and Gilles Neuray. Children of Catherine Cohen's 1st Grade Class

Laurence Le Mercier's 1st Grade Class - Imaginer Imagine that you are in first grade where you dive into the world of reading and where letters all make a sound. Imagine that your body and mind are growing and stretching. How would you show all that in one work of art? That is exactly what students in Laurence's classroom did: they imagined how their bodies would look if they were letters; they stretched themselves really tall and straight to show you how much they have grown, and they smiled...they smiled because, now, they can read and also write, and they can imagine tons of stories that they will put down on paper. We took pictures of the letters made with our own bodies and printed them, and voilà—it's your turn to imagine now! Coordinated by Gilles Neuray and Colleen Sandieson. Children of Laurence Le Mercier’s 1st Grade Class
Nadia Lamarti's 1st Grade Class - Nature The students took many photographs and have chosen what they felt were the best to represent the FAIS forest. The resulting work is a photo collage mounted onto sustainable bamboo using environmentally friendly processes by a local business, Plywerk. Coordinated by Leah Martin. Children of Nadia Lamarti’s 2nd Grade Class
Jérôme Poncet's 2nd Grade Class - Notre monde éco-citoyen The children of Jérôme's class created their version of a map of the world using cardboard recycled from collected cereal, pasta and cracker boxes, creating art from something normally discarded. The cardboard was cut into 5/8" tile squares and placed accordingly to represent different countries, continents and bodies of water. With closer inspection, find French-speaking countries and areas (a certain area in the Pacific Northwest) highlighted with French newsprint. The final work was then glazed with gloss varnish to give the effect of a glass tile mosaic. Coordinated by Anne Mauro. Children of Jérôme Poncet’s 2nd Grade Class
Nadine Zaouk-Strapart's 2nd Grade Class - J’utilise ma creativité to “think outside the box” The children of Nadine’s second grade class were encouraged to ‘think outside the box’ and have designed a unique class project inspired by the work of Hungarian artist Eva Zeisel. The tableau consists of a series of black squares or boxes in or on which the children are pictured performing their favorite activity, in white cut-out shapes. The wall piece is accompanied by a book in which the children have described how they imagine their favorite activity could change the world in twenty years’ time. The combined tableau and book capture the vibrant imaginations of our second graders and how they see their world in the future. Coordinated by Nancy Renwick and Christina Otero. Children of Nadine Zaouk-Strapart’s 2nd Grade Class
CLASS PROJECTS — PAGE 4
Sébastien Durandeu's 2nd Grade Class - Mon animal préféré Sébastien's kids decorated a lampshade for a floor lamp. Each child chose an animal and drew a picture of it. The animal silhouettes were transferred to the black fabric and sewn onto the burlap fabric of the lamp shade. Coordinated by Anya Kuznetsova. Children of Sébastien Durandeu’s 2nd Grade Class
Alix Le Fol's 3rd Grade Class - Tableaux de France From the lavender fields of Provence, to the rugged Alps and the streets of Paris, visit the beauty of France through the artistic impressions of our kids. The students of Alix Le Fol's third grade class have painted jewel-bright windows into the different regions and scenes of France with acrylic paints on canvas board. Coordinated by Ursula Garcia and Larissa Stoffels. Children of Alix Le Fol’s 3rd Grade Class
Claude Cicognani's 3rd Grade Class - Les Arrondissements de Paris A map of the 20 main arrondissements of Paris. The 20" x 24" map highlights the 20 major neighborhoods in Paris. Our piece is a bit of an ode to the French street artist JR. We started by enlarging a neighborhood map of Paris from a travel site. We took CLOSE UP pictures of the kids’ faces. Each child was assigned an arrondissement. We traced and cut out the shapes of the arrondissement with tracing paper. Each child was given their photo and the traced shape; they chose what part of their face would represent their arrondissement. The map will include a key, revealing who is where. The piece is a colorful, textural collage. Coordinated by Tom and Liz Hartge. Children of Claude Cicognani’s 3rd Grade Class
Marion Rosier's 4th Grade Class - Chaise Terre Inspired by their science curriculum, the students recreated the layers and colors of the earth using different fabrics. The fabric pieces are arranged in an appliqué to make the seat and back cushions. The arms of the chair are filled with natural wood twigs, and the back of the chair is covered with intertwined branches. Rocks encrust the oiled wood frame. Coordinated by Victor Tumanoff. Children of Marion Rosier’s 4th Grade Class
Nadia Faure's 4th Grade Class - Water Falls / Chutes d'eau Nadia's 4th graders have created an artistic chair communicating their feelings and knowledge about water. To show how great it is to have clean water, they have created a beautiful waterfall out of their watercolor paintings, which have been printed on fabrics. To show their anger and frustration over man's pollution of water, they painted and wrote their feelings on a part of the chair which is pushing up against the waterfall. The message is to cherish and protect our water supply. The media: a wooden chair which has been remade with paints and new cushioning, and fabrics printed via an inkjet method. Coordinated by Carey Portzline, Lori Prichard, Victor Tumanoff, and Maryellen Hockensmith-McCulloch. Children of Nadia Faure's 4th Grade Class
CLASS PROJECTS — PAGE 5
Cédric Strapart's 5th Grade Class - Un Charmant Chant dans le Vent This is truly a one-of-a-kind wind chime. Its original design stems from a brainstorming session in the classroom, where the team refined it into one design concept. The top framework is inspired from a crystal chandelier, to give the project elegance, with the students working in pairs to create unique looks on each strand. The star framework, handmade by the students by pounding a bar into a 9-pointed star, represents nature, reinforced by the jewel-toned colored beads used throughout. Copper tubes and aluminum bars were selected for their sounds, with their colors reflected in more of the beadwork. Each student added their own hand-embossed medallion to incorporate with their chime, combined together to represent the class as a whole. The center embossed medallion, to help catch the wind, was created by the teacher. In addition to the design, the students selected the beads, cut and drilled the chimes, composed and strung all of the bead work, and created a wind chime that is not only beautiful to look at but proves that this class can make beautiful music together. Suitable for hanging inside or outside. Coordinated by Elizabeth Chapin. Children of Cédric Strapart’s 5th Grade Class
Thierry Anne's 5th Grade Class - Bamboo Haiku Jungle This haiku-inspired project was not only an artistic adventure but also incorporated geometry and math skills in order to accomplish the final presentation. The class worked on calculating quilt size, based upon squares, borders, and margins of measure. Each child's personality is reflected in the nature-themed haikuette. The materials used in the quilt were natural bamboo batting as the filler, all cotton fabrics and threading, along with a natural handmade multi-bamboo dowel. Coordinated by Elena O'Donnell and Wendy Wilhelm. Children of Thierry Anne's 5th Grade Class
Gilkey 6th Grade - Animal Kingdom In this painting, each 6th grade student drew themselves as an animal. In some cases this is a real animal, in others it is a mythical creature. Students then collaboratively came up with a setting to host all the various animals/mythical creatures, combining sea with meadows, jungle with plains and deserts. Students painted their own animals and worked together to paint the backgrounds. This painting represents how, despite our differences, whether they be cultural or individual, we can all get along and live together in harmony, like we do at GILKEY! Coordinated by Stephany Swanson. Students of Gilkey Grade 6
CLASS PROJECTS — PAGE 6
Gilkey 7th Grade - Sea of Ideas This is a collaborative painting and Linoleum-block printing piece. Working from an original photograph of the Oregon Coast taken by Amber Grimmer, chosen from a handful of student submissions, students worked in groups to first paint the background realistically. Students learned how to mix colors, tints, and shades, blending colors, and creating the texture of water. Students then worked in groups to print their linoleum blocks in either a similar or contrasting color to print over top the painting. The final result is an original mixed-media work that is reminiscent of the sea while simultaneously showing each of our student’s individual and unique ideas. Coordinated by Stephany Swanson. Students of Gilkey Grade 7
Gilkey 8th Grade - United We Stand, Divided We Fall Side Table This side table was inspired from both the terracotta soldiers and the work of contemporary Korean artist Do Ho Suh. Each 8th grade student began by creating a 3-inch sculpture that somehow represented themselves. In some cases these sculptures are figurative, in others they are abstract, and in still others they are representative of an object. 8th graders came up with the blue-green color scheme, using both tints and shades of the colors, to move in a light to dark direction. Finally, they spray-painted the base of the table in a similar color scheme to bring the whole table together. This piece captures how 8th graders, after in many cases spending three years together and getting to know one another so well, have really become a united group that can work so well together they can do almost anything, including hold your coffee, book, or favorite plant. Coordinated by Stephany Swanson. Gilkey Class of 2011
