Welcome! Bienvenue! Willkommen! 欢迎 ¡Bienvenidos! A Message from the Head of School Welcome to the French American International School’s 31st Annual Gala Auction! Every year I am pleased to see our community join together to support the School and celebrate our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends. Your support of tonight’s Gala helps the School enrich its academic programs through enhancements such as new equipment and technology for classrooms, a robust professional development program for our faculty and staff, and a variety of capital improvements. This year’s theme, Confetti, Cakes, and Candles, celebrates our school’s amazing history as we enter our “birthday” year! Having been a part of this school as a parent, trustee, and finally the Head of School, I am thrilled to reminisce about many of the projects and experiences we have had as a school during our history, at this, my last Gala as Head. At the heart of the FAIS experience is our school’s stellar faculty and staff. In that spirit I am thrilled that our Special Appeal proceeds this year, rather than being an extra project, will go directly to the classroom. I can’t wait to see your enthusiasm and support for our teachers! I wish to thank this year’s Gala committee, led by co-chairs Jennifer O’Brien and Melissa Wilmot, who put many hours of thought, preparation, and planning into this evening. And, of course, all of the items you will be bidding on tonight were donated by generous individuals in our community, who, like you, share a passion for advancing our unique and extraordinary school. Thank you for your loyalty and support, especially on this special evening. THANK YOU! Merci! Danke! 谢谢 ¡Gracias! Wishing you the best,

Pam Dreisin Head of School

ART PROJECTS - PAGE 35

Transformation des Tout-Petits Toute Petite Section at FAIS is working on their fine motor and social skills, such as holding a paintbrush and working together as a team. These new skills were used to create a watercolor silhouette of a butterfly on a wooden canvas. The butterfly simultaneously symbolizes the natural world and the playfulness that these students have been experiencing and embracing this year, and also the transformation we will undoubtedly witness in our children in the years leading up to their graduation from FAIS—as they transform from caterpillars into butterflies! Coordinated by Dori O’Harrow Created by the Children of Laurence Le Mercier and Kellie Jordan’s Toute Petite Section Class

Tableau Noir Espagnol Inspired by the Spanish mosaic tradition, the maternelle students in Gabrielle’s and Nathalie’s class created a chalkboard that consists of a colorful tiled frame, which will brighten up any room. The little artists worked with clay to create beautiful tiles, which were later painted in many different colors. Each student hand crafted distinctive tiles using clay first before painting them to create the mosaic-style frame that surrounds the blackboard—a unique art piece. Coordinated by Anna Xenokrati Created by the Children of Gabrielle Esbeck and Nathalie Gitt’s Preschool Class

ART PROJECTS - PAGE 36

Inner Space, Outer Space “The cosmos is within us. We are made of star-stuff. We are a way for the universe to know itself.” -Carl Sagan The students of Emilie McNeil’s preschool class each selected a color, then created their own “bubble” artwork with straws, soap, and watercolor paint. The undulation of hue and density is reminiscent of what we see when we look up: clouds, stars, galaxies, nebulae. By using their bodies as a frame for their artwork, students connected this up-looking imagery to the explorations of movement and dance they have participated in recently (including a visit to the Oregon Ballet Theater). Each child’s silhouette was traced from a real dance move or pose that they formed. The center rosette reminds us of the planet we share with one another and gives rotational symmetry, allowing this subtle yet vibrant piece to be hung in any orientation. Coordinated by Heather McGinn and Lukas Baumgartel Created by the Children of Emilie McNeil and Mina Badereddine’s Preschool Class

Imagination Jean Dubuffet was a great advocate of spontaneous children’s art and selfthought artists. He embraced a more raw approach to image making and developed a signature style that was way ahead of his time. Inspired by Jean Dubuffet’s iconic red, white, black, and blue shaped drawings, the children created this original artwork that could easily pass for a real Jean DuBuffet! They learned all about colors, shapes, drawing lines, and finding hidden figures within each of the drawings. Coordinated by Katrien Renard Created by the Children of Françoise Metens and Delphine Latham's Prekindergarten Class

ART PROJECTS - PAGE 37

Un rêve des grenouilles (A Frog’s Dream) Frogs dream too. At least, that’s what this project presupposes. In Véronique’s PK class, the children imagined that amphibious dreamscape in textured vibrant colors. Using clay, oil-based paints, and a Polaroid camera, they’ve managed to transmute this dream into a reality. And what is art, really, if not a dream you can see? Coordinated by Mark Nielsen Created by the Children of Véronique Pain and Nadia Radji’s Prekindergarten Class

The House as a Shelter As part of their unit on shelters, Camille Crampsey’s class of kindergarteners studied their own houses. They examined what characteristics made their homes unique and different, then carefully drew them onto linoleum blocks. These blocks were then carved, assembled, and printed onto 100 percent cotton, acidfree, printing-paper mould made in France. "The house shelters day-dreaming, the house protects the dreamer, the house allows one to dream in peace.” -Gaston Bachelard, The Poetics of Space. Coordinated by Amy Greene and Chris Berwind Created by the Children of Camille Crampsey and Carole LePihive’s Kindergarten Class

Tous Ensemble (All Together) All the students of Sylvie’s 2018-19 kindergarten class worked together to create this piece of collaborative nail-and-string art representing the interconnectedness of a classroom community and the relationships between students and teacher. Each student chose the color of his/her balloon and which nail balloon to string. Practicing fine motor skills, intense focus, and concentration skills, students took turns stringing their balloons, representing themselves, and helping to string the elephant, representing the teacher. Coordinated by Annie Pleau Created by the Children of Sylvie Gbeteh and Joanne Springer’s Kindergarten Class

ART PROJECTS - PAGE 38

Silver Linings Celine’s kindergarten class studied several artists this year and used their knowledge to combine 2-D, 3-D, and silhouettes. The art project organically evolved into two parts. First, using the influence of Giacometti’s silhouettes, the children were photographed jumping in pretend puddles. The photographs of the children were then used to create black silhouettes. The second part of the project reflected their love of our great city and its rain, as each child used their fingertips to paint the droplets in an array of blues. The title of the project, Silver Linings, expresses the sentiment “Whoever believes sunshine brings happiness, has never danced in the rain." Coordinated by Tracey Hodgson Created by the Children of Céline Sonrel-Berruyer and Anne-Marie Luckett’s Kindergarten Class

All Our Roads Lead to FAIS We look across the landscape to see the mighty Mount Hood towering over our city, a protector on the horizon. This is our home, and this is our school. We live in different places, with different families and different backgrounds, but we all come together in our love for FAIS. On a wooden board, our class traced the mountain horizon behind our school; we then painted it. We researched the different kinds of native trees in our forest, drew them, cut them out, and painted them. In conjunction with our unit of inquiry on orientation, the children then drew their house’s view from either the street or from the sky. Their drawings were affixed to the board. The children traced the street view of the school, which we used as a template to cut out their outline on stainless steel sheet metal with a plasma cutter. Mount Hood was then also cut out of metal and affixed to the backdrop. Epoxy resin was poured over everything, and a metal border was used to keep it all in place. Coordinated by Amy Bailey Created by the Children of Katia Lane’s 1st Grade Class

ART PROJECTS - PAGE 39

Ça commence ici (It starts here) The children in Stéphanie Martin-Sewall’s class learned about the art of photography and clay, while creating a distinct art piece. These brilliant 1st graders let us into their world through the black-and-white close-up photos of their eyes, enclosed in honeycomb frames. We’re looking right into their eyes and they’re looking back at us, or are they guessing the future? The black and white photos are playfully balanced by hexagonal clay tiles created by the children, denoting the bright life that has just started. One-of-a-kind artwork! Coordinated by Ashley Schaaf and Anna Xenokrati Created by the Children of Stéphanie Martin-Sewall’s 1st Grade Class

My Vision of the Beach The students in Camille’s 1st grade class used wooden dowels to create a colorful beach sunset. As a class, the children chose colors that reminded them of the sky, sunset, water, and earth. They then painted the wood with these colors. When choosing the colors, they discussed what they saw when they were at the beach, whether it was San Diego, Hawaii, or our own Oregon Coast. They all had great ideas on what colors would represent each section, even blending paints to ensure that the colors used were just right. Once the wood was painted and dried, it was cut into smaller pieces, which the students reassembled like a puzzle into a single masterpiece. They discussed what the finished product reminded them of, which included “the beach,” “sunsets,” “fireworks,” “4th of July at the beach,” and “sky, water, earth.” Coordinated by Amy and Naji Hamdan Created by the Children of Camille Rueff, Emily Higgins, and Davy Berruyer’s 1st Grade Class

I Feel in Color We wanted to create a piece of art that captured our feelings throughout the whole day through the medium of color. With gentle strokes of paint we have created a beautiful abstract picture that is full of our emotions! Coordinated by Matthew Hudson Created by the Children of Françoise Coulon-Lantz’s 2nd Grade Class

ART PROJECTS - PAGE 40

Les Silhouettes et les Couleurs de la Classe The piece consists of a colorful array of sixteen pairs of silhouetted profiles— one pair for each student in the 2nd grade class, bearing the child’s name. Alix and the kids used an iPad to take photographic portraits in class. The files were then edited in Photoshop to produce simple silhouettes. Next, each student individually chose a pair of colors for one profile, the second color being generated in Photoshop as the negatives of the first color. Finally, the electronic files were assembled in a single file to produce a pigment ink print, archivally mounted on board. The resulting image may help us recall the colors, real or imaginary, of the children in Alix’s class. Coordinated by Philippe Mazaud Created by the Children of Alix Martelly’s 2nd Grade Class

Vive la France Inspired by the French artist Georges Seurat and his pointillism painting technique, the students in Nathalie’s class created a pixelated representation of the Eiffel Tower and the French flag. Each student helped paint nearly 1,500 wood tiles with the 18-color palette for the final art piece. Then, using a pixelated color map, the students glued the tiles together to create the image. Enjoy the art as a reminder to "vive"! Coordinated by Carmen Zolman and Toban Zolman Created by the Children of Nathalie Debrun-Sittler’s 3rd Grade Class

ART PROJECTS - PAGE 41

Paris in Watercolor Students in Nadine’s 3rd grade class recreated a map of greater Paris in sepia watercolor. Twenty large-scale tiles of the map were printed on watercolor paper as a line drawing for the students to paint. They learned about watercolor technique, with each student rendering their own personal style on their tile, creating a beautiful mosaic of light and dark areas. Afterwards, the pieces were individually scanned and digitally “stitched” back together to recreate the whole map. The combination of sepia, mosaic, and tile gives the effect of an old figureground-style map of greater Paris. Coordinated by Dory Simons-Rice Created by the Children of Nadine Zaouk-Strapart and Greg Darling’s 3rd Grade Class

The Feathered Whirlpool Fourth graders in Sébastian’s class wanted to create a swirl of feathers with the paper inspired by their study about water. Each child painted colors of water, later cutting them individually into feathers and combining them to create this beautiful whirlpool effect. Coordinated by Deepali Kalia Created by the Children of Sébastien Arial and Heidi Thistle’s 4th Grade Class

Les Mariannes Unies This 24”x36” print is based on a stamp. The woman is an allegory of the French Republic: Marianne. This Marianne was designed by Pierre Gandon, after WW2. She is wearing a bonnet phrygien, like La Liberté guidant le peuple, painted by Eugene Delacroix in 1830. Marianne is a symbol of freedom and justice. Each child plus our teachers, David and Keith, opened the stamp with Pixlr Editor and colored it. We played around with filters and adjustments looking for contrast. If you think we copied Andy Warhol, it’s not true… Coordinated by Bonnie Stewart Created by the Children of David Billeaud and Keith Grant’s 4th Grade Class

ART PROJECTS - PAGE 42

Jido de Portland Jido is a Korean term meaning “picture of the earth.” The students of Stéphanie’s 4th-grade class were able to study these ancient geographic maps at the Portland Art Museum as both utilitarian and artistic in function. Inspired by what they observed, the students created their own imaginary map of Portland using three different methods of print: collagraphy, hand-carved stamps, and engraving. Each student made stamps and mixed colors to represent landmarks that they felt were important to the city and culture of Portland. The final result is a collective visual representation of Portland through the eyes of these students. Coordinated by Annie Pleau and Wendy Audié Created by the Children of Stéphanie Templier and Heidi Thistle’s 4th Grade Class

The Great, The Splendid, The Magic, The MACRO, The Abstract This collage consists of photos of places around campus that are meaningful to us. We’ve all been students in the Lower School for many years now, and some places are a part of our history here. Each of us went out to these places with a camera and shot the images macro-style (close up) and from different angles. We then edited the photos in the computer lab using Adobe Photoshop. We transformed the images into abstract art and worked together to fix the balance and composition for the collage. We also studied and discussed different ways to mount and display our photos. You may not recognize any of these places because they are now so transformed in our photos, but our class definitely does, and we feel like this project will help us to always remember the time we spent in these spots! Coordinated by Laura Donegan Created by the Children of Theirry Anne’s 5th Grade Class

ART PROJECTS - PAGE 43

La Ville en Vert Using a Japanese impression technique, students created an artistic map of their FAIS campus and its surroundings: the forest, the zoo, and the city of Portland. Each student thought of the elements that represent his/her community, drew it on a foam board, painted over it with ink, and then transferred it onto the poster. This piece of art represents four days of work, collaboration, extreme patience, problem-solving, color creation, and fun! Coordinated by Aurore Molerus Created by the Children of Aurore Molerus’ 5th Grade Class

Canvas Confetti In keeping with this year’s auction theme of Confetti, Cakes, and Candles, each 6th grader began our project by creating individual monoprints that explored primary and secondary colors. Students used Gelli Printing Plates to create patterns that reflected complementary and contrasting warm and cool colors. Students also played with texture and depth by adding a variety of tools and stamps to their ink plates. After completing their prints, students used their measurement skills to cut their 5" x 7" prints into strips of varying lengths. Students were instructed to cut the width of their strips to a specific measurement, which they then glued together. The end result was one long strip that fit the dimension of our 24-inch canvas. The final step of our Canvas Confetti project was to use Mod Podge to glue each individual strip onto the canvas. Students worked on line overlapping, color awareness, and spatial variety when selecting a place to glue their line. For a final twist, and in homage to the school’s 40th Anniversary, students pasted 40 thick and 40 thin lines onto the canvas—a celebration of our first 40 years of FAIS and a nod to the next 40 years to come. Coordinated by Virginia Mix Created by the Children of Tina McDermott and Stephany Paull’s 6th Grade Classes

This is Seventh Grade Glance into the minds of our 7th graders with this participatory art piece. You are invited to puzzle together the words our students chose to describe themselves and discover their individually personalized Scrabble tiles. This four-piece mosaic collage comes with a complete “make-your-own-Scrabbletile pendant necklaces” kit and two gift pendants. Join the fun! Coordinated by Anna-Gaëlle Marshall Created by the Children of Stephany Paull’s 7th Grade Classes

Birds of a Feather The 8th grade class, about to take flight themselves, combined their creativity one last time to paint a marvelous tree filled with birds as unique as they each are. Each student designed and painted their bird on a small canvas. Each canvas was then combined into a bright collage. They used acrylic paints, which result in clear and vivid colors while also allowing the students to mix unique tones and textures. Auction Rules

79

1.

On arriving at the auction check-in desk, you will be given a bidder card that lists your unique bidder number. (One number is issued per couple.) To bid in the silent auction, write your bid number on the silent auction bid sheet in front of the desired item. The bid number next to the highest bid amount at the end of the silent auction will be declared the successful bidder of that item. If a number is not legible, it will be invalidated and the next lowest bidder will be declared the winner. In the silent auction, the top bid constitutes a legal contract to purchase the item.

2.

You may return to update your bid on silent-auction items, using the pre-printed bid increments on the bid sheet, until the auctioneer announces the close of the silent auction. To avoid being overbid, you may opt at any time to fill in the guaranteed bid “Buy It Now” which is 150 - 200 percent of value, and you will be declared the winner. (No one can outbid you.)

3.

Some items in the silent auction are sold on a fixed-price signup basis. These include party signups: group events where seats are sold on a per-person or per-couple basis. These are sometimes referred to as Salon Parties.

4.

To bid in the live auction, hold your bid card in the air, with the number facing the auctioneer. Most live-auction items are sold to a single high bidder; some are sold to a pre-determined number of bidders at a fixed (in a “sweep”) or escalating price (progressive bid). The auctioneer guides bidders through the bid processes.

5.

When the auctioneer acknowledges your winning bid, this constitutes a legal agreement of purchase. The auctioneer reserves the right to reject partial advance bids, and has the right to make final determination of the winning bidder.

6.

At check-in, guests will be asked to provide a credit card that is captured electronically and which streamlines check-in and check-out. Users of this quick and easy credit card settlement option can bypass the cashiering line at the end of evening, and move directly to fulfillment to pick up their prizes. Payment arrangements must be provided on the night of the auction. Winning bidders must settle item payment at cashiering/fulfillment, which will open near the end of the live auction.

7.

8.

9.

Bookkeeping is simplified if auction items are awarded to one purchaser only. Split payments for a syndicated (group) bid, whereby several bidders agree to split the price, can be arranged but may cause a slight delay in cashiering.

Personal checks, cash, Visa, MasterCard, and American Express are accepted for payment. Please make checks payable to FAIS or the French American International School. 10. Since FAIS is a 501-c-3 charitable organization, your payments are tax deductible as a charitable contribution, to the extent provided by law—generally, 100 percent of cash donations to the Special Appeal (Paddle Raise) and the amount paid over value for items or services. The School’s tax ID number is printed on auction receipts.

Auction Rules

11.

A portion of your guest ticket payment is also deductible—this fair market value (FMV) information is printed on the back of the invitation.

12.

Unless otherwise noted, all goods, services or certificates will expire and must be claimed and used within a year of the auction date. Restaurant certificates do not cover alcohol or gratuities. Hotel certificates are always subject to availability, may or may not cover tax, do not cover gratuities, and do not cover incidental purchases above what is noted on the certificate.

13.

All purchases are final and there will be no exchanges or refunds on items unless otherwise noted. Certificates, credits or vouchers obtained at the auction cannot be exchanged for cash and are non-transferrable without prior donor approval.

14.

The School reserves the right to modify, add or delete items to/from the auction. The School commits to acknowledge all items received four weeks prior to the auction date. Items received thereafter may be displayed and merchandised at the auction but may not be featured in the catalog due to print schedules.

15.

The purchaser assumes the responsibility to remove purchases from the auction premises on the night of the auction, unless other delivery terms are specifically arranged. At the close of the auction, purchasers are requested to retrieve certificates as well as tangible items from the fulfillment center, upon showing their quick-pay receipt or their paid invoice from cashiering.

16.

Motor vehicles and property requiring a title transfer or license may be claimed by contacting the donor, with coordination through the School’s Development Office, in the week following the event.

17.

Reservations for trips and vacation accommodations must be mutually arranged with the donor unless otherwise noted. No refunds will be allowed on travel packages for canceled tickets and/or accommodations.

18.

FAIS has made significant effort to describe and catalog all items correctly, based primarily on donor descriptions, but does not warrant nor represent, and shall not be responsible for the correctness of descriptions, provenance or condition of items. Statements made in the catalog or at the auction shall not be deemed as warranty, representation or assumption of liability. Values listed in the catalog are estimates and are not warranted for tax purposes. Auction items are offered “as is” and “where is.” Persons issued a bid number (bidder) assume risks and hazards related to the auction and items obtained at the auction. Bidders shall hold the following groups harmless from liability arising from auction purchases: FAIS, its officers and staff, the auctioneer, auction coordinators, contractors, event organizers, caterer, sponsors and volunteers connected with the auction.
