A MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL WELCOME BIENVENUE WILLKOMMEN 欢迎 BIENVENIDOS
FAIS Families and Friends, Welcome to our 2021 Virtual Gala! I am so glad to be writing this letter as we make plans to welcome all of our students back to campus full-time. This year’s theme, “Silver Linings,” celebrates the bright spots during a difficult time. Serving as your Head of School, and seeing our students return to campus, has been one of my greatest silver linings. Thank you for taking the time to participate in this year’s auction to celebrate the French American International School through an evening of philanthropy. It’s hard to comprehend all that our community and world has been through this past year. The thing that has stood out to me the most about FAIS during my first two years as Head of School is the strength and resilience of our students and of the families in this community. Your students come here to learn, grow, and excel in using language as a lens to more deeply understand other cultures. When our students progress to the next stage of their educational journey, they leave FAIS as inquiring, reflective, and open-minded citizens of the world. I am proud of the students we graduate each year. I am proud of our exceptional and committed faculty who have been creative, flexible, and invaluable to not only the academic, but social-emotional success of our students throughout this pandemic. And I am proud of all of you -- our families -- as you have partnered with me and our faculty and staff to navigate this past year. Last year was the first year that we dedicated the income of our Gala to support Financial Aid, but this is an ongoing commitment. All of the funds raised at the Gala through ticket sales, auction bidding, the raffle, and art projects directly benefit financial aid. Our school’s ability to offer strong financial aid packages to inquiring families puts us in a stronger position as an institution to create the diverse and wellrounded student body that we want our community to represent. On behalf of our faculty and staff, I appreciate the investment you make in choosing to send your child to FAIS, and thank you for your ongoing support of this community. Cheers to you. Cheers to all of the silver linings we’ve shared this past year. And cheers to where we’re going… together.

LES TOUTS PETITS DAY OR NIGHT, THE SUN IS SHINING AND EACH CLOUD HAS A SILVER LINING
Les Touts Petits created a silver lining themed painting of a magical night sky with the silhouettes of participating children, symbolizing the importance of looking at the bright side of life and choosing to be happy. The painting demonstrates that when things seem the darkest, moments of beauty present themselves in the most unexpected places. Coordinated by Annie Breaux 27” x 25” Acrylic on artboard, framed

LES TOUTS PETITS AND PRE-K À LA MANIÈRE DE DUBUFFET
Some of our youngest community members bring you a colorful 20-piece artwork titled, “À la manière de Dubuffet.” Gabrielle and Françoise’s cohort mirrors Jean Dubuffet’s art brut collection, known for transcending boundaries and barriers of “usual art,” and embracing difference of perspective. Coordinated by Annie Breaux, Gabrielle Esbeck, and Françoise Metens 40” x 31” Pen and ink on paper, matted and framed

KINDERGARTEN UNITY IN DIVERSITY
As an expression of harmony, children from Céline’s, Guy’s, Sylvie’s and Véronique’s Kindergarten classes created this artwork using craft sticks and acrylic paints. Each student painted and decorated these sticks using spirals, hearts, and other motifs using their imagination and fine motor skills. In the end, all these individual and diverse sticks came together to form a mosaic-style colorful and unique artwork that symbolizes the spirit of "All in One and One in All." Coordinated by Nidhi Khandelwal 37.5” x 26.5” Acrylic on craft sticks mounted to artboard, framed

FIRST GRADE DREAM CATCHERS
Each student created a dream catcher by weaving a unique pattern in a recycled CD using yarn colors of their choice, pipe cleaners, beads and found materials from their home/culture. This technique provides wonderful connection to the 1st Grade Unit 5 Inquiry which dives into Native American weaving practices and their meaning. Using prismatic CDs is a nod to the Gala theme, “Silver Lining” and reinforces the importance of recycling, repurposing and sustainability. Coordinated by Whitney Pinfold 26.5” x 36” Wall hanging. Yarn, mixed media, recycled materials

SECOND GRADE PAYSAGES

LES ANIMAUX
Created by Stéphanie’s class
Quilts are both an outlet for creativity and a symbol of love and friendship. They take time, effort, and skill to create. A quilt ties together the threads of each participant’s story, creates a patchwork pane into their shared experience, and narrates a shared moment in time. Few things are cozier than wrapping up in a quilt by the fire on a snowy night. Take home one of two beautiful 2nd grade quilts as works of art hung on your wall, spread on a bed or as a colorful throw on your couch. Coordinated by Anna-Gaëlle Marshall 33” x 61” Handmade quilt. Ink and paint on fabric

THIRD GRADE COMPOSITION GÉOMÉTRIQUE: SYMÉTRIE ET LIBERTÉ
A stunning trio of artwork representing three groups. Our third graders brought their geometry studies to life by painting a stunning trio of artwork representing the three original classes of Nadine, Nathalie and Peggy. The primary side features symmetry, created by painting laser-cut parallelograms. The secondary side celebrates each student's creativity, using a paint-resist method to achieve a free-form interpretation of asymmetry with the name of each artist displayed on their work. Coordinated by Ashley Schaaf and Jennifer Martindale Triptych: 10.5” x 18.5” each Acrylic paint on laser cut pieces affixed to 18.5” x 10.5” wooden panels

FOURTH GRADE LE TOUR DU MONDE
On the theme of Vendée Globe, the great sailboat race en solitaire around the world, fourth grade CM1 students have created a composite piece comprising a map of the world showing the race course along with pictures of sailboats and aquatic beasts, real or imaginary. Each of the thirty sections composing the piece is a reproduction of a painting or drawing contributed by a student. Coordinated by Philippe Mazaud 34.5” x 27” Mixed media, digitally printed on artboard. Framing credit and digital copies available
ART PROJECTS - PAGE 30
FIFTH GRADE HAND SANITIZER
The pandemic continues to define our current lives so it only seemed appropriate to lean into that for the theme of the fifth grade art piece. For artistic reference we used Andy Warhol's Campbell's Soup Cans, specifically the colorful versions from 1965. When asked why he chose to paint Campbell’s soup, Warhol responded, “I used to drink it [Campbell’s Soup]. I used to have the same lunch every day, for twenty years, I guess, the same thing over and over again.” This quote speaks volumes of the ubiquitous nature of Campbell’s Soup in everyday American society. Arguably, hand sanitizer, masks and maybe even toilet paper will be everyday items remembered long into the future as globally defining our current lives in 2020-2021. The 5th grade students each colored a graphic hand sanitizer to memorialize this time in their lives. For the final art piece a composite was created of all the individual art and brought to life in a modern way on an acrylic print. The high gloss of the acrylic complements the rich colors and reinforces the sterile nature of hand sanitizer. Coordinated by Carmen Zolman 29.75” x 22” Mixed media, digital print on acrylic glass

SIXTH GRADE BUBBLES OF RESILIENCE
Times have been different: we were in our bubble at home and experiencing many different emotions. We have expressed our emotions in these circles, our bubbles—vividly colored bubbles, black and white hand-sketched bubbles, all arranged together to create a colorful art piece. It's like a beautiful sky filled with rainbows and silver linings for a fabulous future and return to campus. We lived through a tough time, but together we are stronger each day! Coordinated by Deepali Kalia 28.5” x 20.5” Pen and ink on paper circles, mounted and framed
ART PROJECTS - PAGE 32
SEVENTH GRADE RESILIENCE
A collective expressionist art piece by the students of the 7th Grade. Going with the flow, searching for the gifts, silver linings, getting comfortable being uncomfortable, embracing the unknown, trust. Resilience. This has been (and continues to be) the collective experience of our students, our community and society at large while living through a global pandemic and the catalytic events of 2020. Small, socially distanced and safe group events allowed the students to cautiously re-experience community while expressing themselves and show kindness and care to the larger community being able to volunteer on campus. Building layer upon layer of foundation, then expression, tension and finally texture...some artists were bold and courageous and got lost in the act, some curious and gentle, some cautious and deliberate. Together, they each left their mark, contributing a piece of themselves, their personality and experience on the canvas. Even the naming of the art was a creation of the collective with multiple name submissions and the final vote going to the word...RESILIENCE. There could not have been a better name. Coordinated by Daniela Caine and Ashley Schaaf 47” x 36” Acrylic paint and mixed media on canvas
ART PROJECTS - PAGE 33
EIGHTH GRADE RESILIENCE
Speaking to their incredible resilience during 2020-2021, students took photos of themselves or things significant to them over the past year. They hand-wrote a list of affirmations that highlighted their positive attributes. The photos were transformed to black and white paintings and superimposed in front of their affirmations, reinforcing the strength that comes from self appreciation and selfcare. Coordinated by Virginia Mix Adatto 20” x 16” Mixed media, digital print on canvas
