Bienvenue! A Message from the Head of School Bienvenue and welcome to the French American International School’s 28th Annual Gala Auction! Every year I’m so pleased to see our community join together to support the School’s efforts and celebrate our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends. Your support of tonight’s Gala helps the School continue to enrich its academic programs by providing such enhancements as new equipment and technology for classrooms, a robust professional development program for our faculty and staff, and a variety of capital improvements. Our new kitchen is an example of what this community can do, and I can’t wait to see your enthusiasm this year for the Special Appeal! The volunteer committee who planned le Tour de Monde, led by co-chairs Grayson Dempsey and Kristin W. Kilshaw, put in many hours of thought, preparation, and planning into this evening. And, of course, all of the items you will be bidding on tonight were donated by generous individuals in our community, who, like you, share a passion for advancing our unique and extraordinary school. Thank you, as always, for your loyalty and support, especially on this special evening. Merci beaucoup! Wishing you the best,

Pam Dreisin Head of School

Auction Rules 1.

On arriving at the auction check-in desk, you will be given a bidder card that lists your unique bidder number. (One number is issued per couple.) To bid in the silent auction, write your bid number on the silent auction bid sheet in front of the desired item. The bid number next to the highest bid amount at the end of the silent auction will be declared the successful bidder of that item. If a number is not legible, it will be invalidated and the next lowest bidder will be declared the winner. In the silent auction, the top bid constitutes a legal contract to purchase the item. 2. You may return to update your bid on silent-auction items, using the pre-printed bid increments on the bid sheet, until the auctioneer announces the close of the silent auction. To avoid being overbid, you may opt at any time to fill in the guaranteed bid “Buy It Now” which is 150 - 200 percent of value, and you will be declared the winner. (No one can outbid you.) 3. Some items in the silent auction are sold on a fixed-price signup basis. These include party signups: group events where seats are sold on a per-person or per-couple basis. These are sometimes referred to as Salon Parties. 4. To bid in the live auction, hold your bid card in the air, with the number facing the auctioneer. Most live-auction items are sold to a single high bidder; some are sold to a pre-determined number of bidders at a fixed (in a “sweep”) or escalating price (progressive bid). The auctioneer guides bidders through the bid processes. 5. When the auctioneer acknowledges your winning bid, this constitutes a legal agreement of purchase. The auctioneer reserves the right to reject partial advance bids, and has the right to make final determination of the winning bidder. 6. At check-in, guests will be asked to provide a credit card that is captured electronically and which streamlines check-in and check-out. Users of this quick and easy credit card settlement option can bypass the cashiering line at the end of evening, and move directly to fulfillment to pick up their prizes. 7. Payment arrangements must be provided on the night of the auction. Winning bidders must settle item payment at cashiering/fulfillment, which will open near the end of the live auction. 8. Bookkeeping is simplified if auction items are awarded to one purchaser only. Split payments for a syndicated (group) bid, whereby several bidders agree to split the price, can be arranged but may cause a slight delay in cashiering. 9. Personal checks, cash, Visa, MasterCard, and American Express are accepted for payment. Please make checks payable to FAIS or the French American International School. 10. Since FAIS is a 501-c-3 charitable organization, your payments are tax deductible as a charitable contribution, to the extent provided by law—generally, 100 percent of cash donations to the Special Appeal (Paddle Raise) and the amount paid over value for items or services. The School’s tax ID number is printed on auction receipts.

A portion of your guest ticket payment is also deductible—this fair market value (FMV) information is printed on the back of the invitation. Unless otherwise noted, all goods, services or certificates will expire and must be claimed and used within a year of the auction date. Restaurant certificates do not cover alcohol or gratuities. Hotel certificates are always subject to availability, may or may not cover tax, do not cover gratuities, and do not cover incidental purchases above what is noted on the certificate. All purchases are final and there will be no exchanges or refunds on items unless otherwise noted. Certificates, credits or vouchers obtained at the auction cannot be exchanged for cash and are non-transferrable without prior donor approval. The School reserves the right to modify, add or delete items to/from the auction. The School commits to acknowledge all items received four weeks prior to the auction date. Items received thereafter may be displayed and merchandised at the auction but may not be featured in the catalog due to print schedules. The purchaser assumes the responsibility to remove purchases from the auction premises on the night of the auction, unless other delivery terms are specifically arranged. At the close of the auction, purchasers are requested to retrieve certificates as well as tangible items from the fulfillment center, upon showing their quick-pay receipt or their paid invoice from cashiering. Motor vehicles and property requiring a title transfer or license may be claimed by contacting the donor, with coordination through the School’s Development Office, in the week following the event. Reservations for trips and vacation accommodations must be mutually arranged with the donor unless otherwise noted. No refunds will be allowed on travel packages for canceled tickets and/ or accommodations. FAIS has made significant effort to describe and catalog all items correctly, based primarily on donor descriptions, but does not warrant nor represent, and shall not be responsible for the correctness of descriptions, provenance or condition of items. Statements made in the catalog or at the auction shall not be deemed as warranty, representation or assumption of liability. Values listed in the catalog are estimates and are not warranted for tax purposes. Auction items are offered “as is” and “where is.” Persons issued a bid number (bidder) assume risks and hazards related to the auction and items obtained at the auction. Bidders shall hold the following groups harmless from liability arising from auction purchases: FAIS, its officers and staff, the auctioneer, auction coordinators, contractors, event organizers, caterer, sponsors and volunteers connected with the auction.

Class Projects L’Arbre aux Galettes

The Tree of Life by Austrian symbolist painter Gustav Klimt was the inspiration for students in Anne-Marie Luckett’s preschool class, and their work features the galette, the universally known French round cake. The project captured their creativity, knowledge of shapes, and their fine motor skills, as they drew and created their own galette, which was then filled in with ink and special colors. Each galette then became a leaf, filling out the outline of a tree, with names of every student in the class included on the galettes or on the roots of the tree. Children of Anne-Marie Luckett & Sue Inahara's Preschool Class

Butterfly Love/ Amour Papillon

Ombré shades of blue and lavender light up this watercolor piece by students in Emilie Tarbel’s preschool class. Butterfly shapes handpunched by the children were placed on archival quality matting, and then framed in reclaimed cedar wood, aged by thirty years of our own Portland weather (and supplied by a class grandfather). This bright piece will light up any space you choose for it. Children of Emilie Tarbel and Josiane Douglass's Preschool Class

Plumage / Birds of a Feather

South African olive tree wood is the beautiful backdrop to these whimsical clay feathers, each created by a student in Béatrice’s prekindergarten class. The students lovingly formed their own unique feather from clay, used tools to etch designs on the feather, and then glazed and fired the feathers in shades of complementary shades of color. This is an exquisite piece that will be striking wherever you choose to display it. Children of Béatrice Szymkowiak & Janique McGee's Prekindergarten Class

CLASS PROJECTS - PAGE 2

Coup de Coeur

The shape of a heart is the universal symbol of affection and love, and this simple piece by Maud Guegan's prekindergarteners is bursting with these emotions. Each tiny heart was carefully painted with the students’ own fingerprints, making it even more special and personal. Children of Maud Guegan & Carol Le Pihive's Prekindergarten Class

The Secret Garden

Kindergarten students in Guy Martelet’s class have created a perfectly pastel garden escape perfect for any wall. Based on the techniques of children’s book authors Eric Carle and Leo Lionni, this sweet piece is guaranteed to transport you to your own secret garden. Children of Guy Martelet & Maryvonne Ferar's Kindergarten Class

Fingerprint Blossoms

The beautiful trees along Portland's waterfront, an iconic part of the spring season in Portland, were the inspiration for the students in Françoise Metens’ kindergarten class as they were looking forward to warmer weather and longer days. The art was lovingly painted in stages by small groups of students; the finished masterpiece is a wonderful tribute to the vitality of spring. Children of Françoise Metens & Nadia Khazem's Kindergarten Class

Autour de l’ Ecole

Our kindergarten class captured a view of their world by taking photographs of their favorite moments at FAIS. Every child was given time to explore the campus and photograph their favorite places and activities. By combining all the images, we have created "Autour de l'Ecole” through their eyes. The class helped choose their favorite images, which were printed on environmentally sustainable plywood, and participated in the final assembly of the collage. Children of Sylvie Gbeteh & Luc Bouveur's Kindergarten Class

L’Ecole Vue du Ciel

As 1st graders in Laurence’s classroom explored different kinds of space in their I.B. inquiry, they began by exploring their immediate surroundings: their classroom, and, of course, our beautiful campus. After seeing the view of FAIS from above, they began mapping the campus and envisioning the landscape around it. They let their imaginations add little pieces here and there; one example is a winding river, which they agreed would be such a nice addition for their daily explorations. To conclude their inquiry, they decided to use fabric of various colors to show—in vivid color and texture their “l’école vue du ciel.” Children of Laurence Le Mercier’s 1st Grade Class

Quatre-vingt-un

Inspired by “Thirty,” the 1937 original oil composition by Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky and displayed at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, students in Véronique Pain’s 1st grade class created “Quatre-vingt-un,” or “81,” which was the number of squares that made this abstract black and white collage. The students enjoyed drawing and cutting shapes with no rules, following in the steps of Kandinsky, one of the fathers of the Abstract Expressionist movement. Children of Veronique Pain’s 1st Grade Class

Les Quatre Labyrinthes

Labyrinths are thousands of years old and provided a fascinating theme for Stéphanie MartinSewall’s 1st grade class art project. While immersed in their inquiry on space and organization, the students created one big maze with four different entrances of four different colors, leading to the center of the 36-inch circular canvas. The labyrinth paths were made from graph paper, then transferred to the canvas, with handpainted wooden pieces marking the paper labyrinth’s lengths and to show the maze's dead-ends. Children of Stéphanie Martin-Sewall’s 1st Grade Class

Let Your Dreams Take Flight

With this year’s Gala theme for inspiration, the children of Jérôme’s 2nd grade class created their own hot air balloon, titled “Let Your Dreams Take Flight,” using the technique of quilling, aka paper filigree. Quilling is the centuries-old technique of twirling, twisting, and shaping paper to make elaborate pictures. Each child started by writing down a wish, hope, or dream on two slips of paper, one of which was then twirled up and incorporated to form the balloon, the other attached to the back so that the dreams may be read. Through this amazing project, the children's dreams “take flight” in the beautiful balloon they created. Children of Jérôme Poncet’s 2nd Grade Class

Merry Portland Rain

The students of Alix Le Fol’s 2nd grade class were inspired by their unit about weather and its special conditions in Portland. As we all know, it does rain a lot, but rainy days do not have to be sad. To illustrate this idea, the children painted a grey sky over the silhouette of Portland. Out of the grey, nineteen happy, colorful figures float down on their city, each with an umbrella in hand. The children painted their own representations, which give cheerful accents to the grey background, showing that even grey weather can accompany a good mood. Children of Alix Le Fol’s 2nd Grade Class

Le Tour du Monde

Our world as seen from the eyes of our 2nd graders is illustrated with this hand-crafted globe and carved wooden stand, designed and built by the children in Camille Rueff’s 2nd grade class. The winning bidder will delight in “traveling” around the globe with this charming piece. Children of Camille Rueff’s 2nd Grade Class

CLASS PROJECTS - PAGE 5

Harmonie

This charming tiled table is a wonderful mosaic of students’ acrobatic poses coming together to create a lively tableau that floats on the surface of a handmade maple and walnut table. Jennifer Reineck's 3rd grade class started by reflecting on the various poses they had made during a recent acrobatic performance. Then, using a graphic design program, they converted their digital images into cardstock paper silhouettes. Finally, the silhouettes were transferred onto ceramic tiles which were adhered to the surface of the table, designed by Matthew Reineck. This functional work of art embodies the collaboration of many working in harmony. Children of Jennifer Reineck’s 3rd Grade Class

Rivière des Couleurs

Inspired by New York artist Holton Rower, best known for his “pour paintings,” students in Nathalie Debrun-Sittler’s 3rd grade class teamed together in a colorful way to create this striking wall piece. The finished product is on a custom-crafted solid maple piece, and consists of twenty layers of hand-poured non-VOC latex paint. An abstract creation by a colorful team of 3rd graders, surely to bring energy to any space! Children of Nathalie Debrun-Sittler’s 3rd Grade Class

La Fleur Sauvage

Our class created their piece, “La Fleur Sauvage” in the Siler Studio Gallery, with local artist Buzz Siler (www.silerstudios.com). Using oil paints and water, Buzz helped the students create a piece that came together from a circle within a square, representing the shape of the students as they stood in a group. The students pressed their own Haiku into the canvas, adding their voices to the masterpiece. The piece is an original and it has been signed by Buzz Siler. Children of Nadine Zaouk’s 3rd Grade Class

CLASS PROJECTS - PAGE 6

Le Carrousel de FAIS

This whimsical sculpture takes the idea of a carousel, combines it with ACTION, all through hand-shaped, glazed and fired figures based on the students’ own favorite athletic pursuits. Each of the students in Heimata Lemaire’s 4th grade class crafted a clay figure doing various sports, then painted and fired them. The carousel includes a snowboarder, a gymnast, an equestrian, and other figures in action, and is a delightful piece for your home. Children of Heimata Lemaire’s 4th Grade Class

Medieval Illuminations

The students in Aurore Molerus’ 4th grade class explored medieval times through the central idea that culture, values and beliefs are transmitted through art. The students spent time focusing on art within books and literature, and each of them created their own illumination for their first-name initial, using pencil, colored pencil, markers, and gold ink. The work is accompanied by a proclamation written by the students, describing who they are. Children of Aurore Molerus’s 4th Grade Class

Auvelle, une Ville Médiévale

Students in David Billeaud’s 4th grade class, while studying the Medieval period, decided to create their own elaborate, 3-D Medieval town, made up of buildings, streets, all illustrating the medieval way of life. For their class auction project, the students photographed different views of their town, published in this very beautiful one-of-a-kind bound album of their medieval creations. Children of David Billeaud’s 4th Grade Class

CLASS PROJECTS - PAGE 7

By Bike / À Bicyclette

The 5th grade class of Cédric Strapart has been dreaming of two cities: Portland and Paris. They spent some time considering those things the cities have in common: cafés and coffee; roses and rivers; bridges and bicycles (and curious young learners, too, of course!) The students collected scraps from magazines, maps, and mementos, and created a collage of paper that cleverly blends the language and landmarks of each city to create a vibrant bicycle. A bicyclette! Children of Cédric Strapart’s 5th Grade Class

Les Nombreux Visages de l’Arc de Triomphe

Students in Thierry Anne’s 5th grade class have been taking photos of themselves throughout the school year. Who knew they could combine so many different black-and-white photos to create a mosaic of one of Paris’s most iconic monuments, the Arc de Triomphe? A fun piece that will reveal new things every time you look at it! Children of Thierry Anne’s 5th Grade Class

Possibilités

Fifth grade teacher Virginie Calmé charged her sixteen students with a task: If you have five options for designing a disk of clay, how many possibilities do you have? Each student created their own unique clay circle, choosing what they wanted to convey, and the result is beautiful. The project is made out of clay circles—all unique, glazed, and fired by the students—and mounted on two pieces of distressed wood. Perfect for display on a sidetable or on a wall. Children of Virginie Calmé’s 5th Grade Class

Woods of Wisdom

The Woods of Wisdom is an interactive art project created by the 6th graders. Each student was given a blank wood slice and charged with creating their own work of art using acrylic paint and a variety of techniques and inspiration. Each wood piece includes an inspirational saying or joke along with the student’s name who created it on the back; the wood pieces are secured to the foundation of the art piece with a magnet so these sayings can be read again and again. Students of Gilkey 6th Grade

Places and Portraits

This wonderful collection of black-and-white images incorporates each 7th grader’s portrait with the image of a place that is special to them. The students started with photos of themselves in profile, and then, using Photoshop, they visually combined the portrait with their place. The ultimate collection of photos symbolizes that places that are special to us truly touch our souls. Students of Gilkey 7th Grade

Wanderlust

Who knew that a tiny masterpiece with exquisite detail could be made with something as diminutive as a matchbox? Eighth graders took the Gala theme of travel and chose their own photos, special three-dimensional objects, textural elements, and beautiful papers to create this eye-catching mosaic, all encapsulated within (or on the covers of) matchboxes. Matted and framed in a shadowbox, this piece reflects the travel adventures of a delightful class of students, and will reveal something new and interesting to its lucky owner every time they look at it. Students of Gilkey 8th Grade
