欢迎 Bienvenue! Willkommen! ¡Bienvenido! A Message from the Head of School Welcome to the French American International School’s 30th Annual Gala Auction! Every year I am pleased to see our community join together to support the School and celebrate our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends. Your support of tonight’s Gala helps the School to enrich its academic programs through enhancements such as new equipment and technology for classrooms, a robust professional development program for our faculty and staff, and a variety of capital improvements. I am excited about this year’s Special Appeal: an Amphitheater that connects our new Middle School building to the rest of campus and provides a space for students to come together in celebration of art and music and community. I can’t wait to see your enthusiasm and support for this fantastic project! This year’s theme, The World is Your Canvas, highlights the best part of every year’s Gala, our student art! Much appreciation goes to this year’s Gala committee, led by co-chairs Regan Nelson and Jennifer O’Brien, who have put many hours of thought, preparation, and planning into this evening. And, of course, all of the items you will be bidding on tonight were donated by generous individuals in our community, who, like you, share a passion for advancing our unique and extraordinary school. Thank you, as always, for your loyalty and support, especially on this special evening. THANK YOU! 谢谢 Merci! Danke! ¡Gracias! Wishing you the best,
Pam Dreisin Head of School

Auction Rules
On arriving at the auction check-in desk, you will be given a bidder card that lists your unique bidder number. (One number is issued per couple.) To bid in the silent auction, write your bid number on the silent auction bid sheet in front of the desired item. The bid number next to the highest bid amount at the end of the silent auction will be declared the successful bidder of that item. If a number is not legible, it will be invalidated and the next lowest bidder will be declared the winner. In the silent auction, the top bid constitutes a legal contract to purchase the item. 2. You may return to update your bid on silent-auction items, using the pre-printed bid increments on the bid sheet, until the auctioneer announces the close of the silent auction. To avoid being overbid, you may opt at any time to fill in the guaranteed bid “Buy It Now” which is 150 - 200 percent of value, and you will be declared the winner. (No one can outbid you.) 3. Some items in the silent auction are sold on a fixed-price signup basis. These include party signups: group events where seats are sold on a per-person or per-couple basis. These are sometimes referred to as Salon Parties. 4. To bid in the live auction, hold your bid card in the air, with the number facing the auctioneer. Most live-auction items are sold to a single high bidder; some are sold to a pre-determined number of bidders at a fixed (in a “sweep”) or escalating price (progressive bid). The auctioneer guides bidders through the bid processes. 5. When the auctioneer acknowledges your winning bid, this constitutes a legal agreement of purchase. The auctioneer reserves the right to reject partial advance bids, and has the right to make final determination of the winning bidder. 6. At check-in, guests will be asked to provide a credit card that is captured electronically and which streamlines check-in and check-out. Users of this quick and easy credit card settlement option can bypass the cashiering line at the end of evening, and move directly to fulfillment to pick up their prizes. 7. Payment arrangements must be provided on the night of the auction. Winning bidders must settle item payment at cashiering/fulfillment, which will open near the end of the live auction. 8. Bookkeeping is simplified if auction items are awarded to one purchaser only. Split payments for a syndicated (group) bid, whereby several bidders agree to split the price, can be arranged but may cause a slight delay in cashiering. 9. Personal checks, cash, Visa, MasterCard, and American Express are accepted for payment. Please make checks payable to FAIS or the French American International School. 10. Since FAIS is a 501-c-3 charitable organization, your payments are tax deductible as a charitable contribution, to the extent provided by law—generally, 100 percent of cash donations to the Special Appeal (Paddle Raise) and the amount paid over value for items or services. The School’s tax ID number is printed on auction receipts.

Auction Rules
A portion of your guest ticket payment is also deductible—this fair market value (FMV) information is printed on the back of the invitation. Unless otherwise noted, all goods, services or certificates will expire and must be claimed and used within a year of the auction date. Restaurant certificates do not cover alcohol or gratuities. Hotel certificates are always subject to availability, may or may not cover tax, do not cover gratuities, and do not cover incidental purchases above what is noted on the certificate. All purchases are final and there will be no exchanges or refunds on items unless otherwise noted. Certificates, credits or vouchers obtained at the auction cannot be exchanged for cash and are non-transferrable without prior donor approval. The School reserves the right to modify, add or delete items to/from the auction. The School commits to acknowledge all items received four weeks prior to the auction date. Items received thereafter may be displayed and merchandised at the auction but may not be featured in the catalog due to print schedules. The purchaser assumes the responsibility to remove purchases from the auction premises on the night of the auction, unless other delivery terms are specifically arranged. At the close of the auction, purchasers are requested to retrieve certificates as well as tangible items from the fulfillment center, upon showing their quick-pay receipt or their paid invoice from cashiering. Motor vehicles and property requiring a title transfer or license may be claimed by contacting the donor, with coordination through the School’s Development Office, in the week following the event. Reservations for trips and vacation accommodations must be mutually arranged with the donor unless otherwise noted. No refunds will be allowed on travel packages for canceled tickets and/or accommodations. FAIS has made significant effort to describe and catalog all items correctly, based primarily on donor descriptions, but does not warrant nor represent, and shall not be responsible for the correctness of descriptions, provenance or condition of items. Statements made in the catalog or at the auction shall not be deemed as warranty, representation or assumption of liability. Values listed in the catalog are estimates and are not warranted for tax purposes. Auction items are offered “as is” and “where is.” Persons issued a bid number (bidder) assume risks and hazards related to the auction and items obtained at the auction. Bidders shall hold the following groups harmless from liability arising from auction purchases: FAIS, its officers and staff, the auctioneer, auction coordinators, contractors, event organizers, caterer, sponsors and volunteers connected with the auction.

Art Projects Matinée "Matinée" began as a photograph taken during a morning run in Paris, before being drained of its color and blown into a poster. Les petits artistes de la petite section then painted over the black and white photograph, applying swirling colors to the sky and cobbling the Avenue de la Grande Armée with their fingertips. We also cut out the shapes of cars, trees, and people passing along their way, which we turned into morning silhouettes. We are certain this piece will resonate with those who have experienced just such a morning stroll in The City of Lights. Coordinated by Mark Nielsen Children of Emilie McNeil, Gabrielle Esbeck, and Nadia Khazem’s Preschool Class
La Vie en Rose The playful preschool students of Céline’s class who are learning all about the alphabet had so much fun creating letters with their own bodies. Every letter was made with love, friendship, and a lot of giggles, and all together they say "la vie en rose," which translates to "life seen through rosy glasses" or "life is beautiful and wonderful" as seen through our children’s eyes. Coordinated by Heba Aly Children of Céline Sonrel-Berruyer and Emilie Zanetton’s Preschool Class
Through My Eyes A black and white photography project: Children in Maud Guegan’s class took time to learn how to use a professional camera, and had an opportunity to photograph the world of FAIS through their own eyes. Most students opted for outdoor shots of their favorite areas to play. Their photos will take you up close and personal to the magical place they enjoy each day. Coordinated by Nathan Jobe and Jennifer Davidson Children of Maud Guegan and Delphine Latham’s Prekindergarten Class
ART PROJECTS - PAGE 24
On a Besoin de Tous Pour Faire un Monde The title of this piece is a French expression, meaning: "We need everybody to make a world." This wood and ceramic composition was inspired by the book Quatre Petits Coins de Rien du Tout. Coordinated by Jennifer Hoffman Children of Béatrice Szymkowiak and Joanne Springer’s Prekindergarten Class
School of Fish…and Two Wise Turtles Using a printmaking technique called "linocut," each student started by drawing their own self-designed fish and copying it on a sheet of linoleum. They then used a lino tool, or V-shaped chisel, to carve (with some help!) their fish into the linoleum for printing. The linoleum sheet was inked with a roller, then impressed onto the paper to create a mirror image of their design. We used this technique for all of the children's fish to create the underwater scene. The same technique was used to represent Françoise and Anne-Marie, the two wise turtles. The children will keep their own stamp for a souvenir. Coordinated by Jennifer O’Brien and Ashley Schaaf Children of Françoise Metens and Anne-Marie Luckett’s Kindergarten Class
Build Your World with Joy This 36” x 32” display board has beautiful artwork made by Sylvie’s kindergarten students, and has plenty of space to attach your own artwork, calendars, to-do lists, hats, or anything else your family can imagine. It combines central themes from this year’s PYP program of shelters, emotions, and recycling. The children used acrylics to paint their idea of a shelter on a 4” x 4” canvas, and used resistance painting and drawing to show their emotions when building. They are mounted on recycled materials to promote the theme of reusing. The children also used their printing skills to carefully write the theme of building excitement, while Sylvie did the French translation in cursive. Coordinated by Amy Bailey Children of Sylvie Gbeteh and Davy Berruyer’s Kindergarten Class
ART PROJECTS - PAGE 25
Spread Your Wings and Fly Students in Camille’s kindergarten class created a vibrant set of wings. Each feather is handcrafted by a child, carefully cut, and thoughtfully painted in bold watercolor. The feathers are made from recycled office file folders found at the Scrap shop, where the class visited on a recent field trip. The beautiful, unique feathers join together to form strong, powerful wings. Coordinated by Jennifer Martindale Children of Camille Crampsey and Carole LePihive’s Kindergarten Class
The Unseen Forest As 1st graders in Laurence’s class explored the forest this year, they have seen the dramatic changes in colors and how the trees went from fully dressed with leaves to quite naked during the winter months. They also learned how we are different as we grow, and although we all have different abilities, we can adapt and make our differences shine. This is why this piece was created with students being blindfolded as they rolled paint on the background, and they did not use their hands to paint the trees—they blew the ink on the canvas. The end result is a beautiful piece which represents so much more than just trees in a forest! Coordinated by Matthew Hudson Children of Laurence Le Mercier's 1st Grade Class
Insects in the City Invite beneficial pollinators into your garden with a beautifully crafted insect hotel created by the 1st grade students in Véronique Pain’s class. After learning about the habitat of local pollinators, the students used their knowledge of shapes, colors, and patterns to fill eight buildings that create the Portland skyline. The simple black lines of the buildings highlight the natural material and unique patterns chosen by the students, making a striking habitat that any ladybug or Mason bee will love. Coordinated by Lori Townzen Children of Véronique Pain's 1st Grade Class

The Art of Folding Paper A folk art, a creative art, a mathematical puzzle, a game—all of these terms describe the art of folding paper, known as origami. Origami was first practiced in the Japanese imperial court, where it was considered an amusing and elegant way of passing the time. Over the centuries the skill has been passed down to ordinary people, who took it up with enthusiasm and made it into the art form that it is today. Coordinated by Carmen & Toban Zolman Children of Camille Rueff's 2nd Grade Class
The World Is Your Canvas and Your Family Is Your Story If the world is our canvas, then our families are our stories—so where in the world do our stories come from? Katia Lane’s 2nd graders asked themselves the question, “What area of the world helps define the identity and story of my family?” Their answers guided the creation of a celebration of diversity for every month of the year! Poetry, watercolor drawings, and abstract watercolor creations make up this wine-of-the-month package, which includes custom, student-made wine labels celebrating their individual heritage; a custom-made metal wine rack (thanks to the wonderful craftsmanship of Madame Katia’s husband, Mark Lane); and a keepsake book containing poetry the students wrote about their heritage, in addition to their own watercolor images that appear on the wine labels. And that’s not all—each bottle of wine hails from that student's family heritage! We hope you enjoy learning about our students while celebrating the diversity that brings us all together! Coordinated by Erin Dhruva and Randi Inukai Children of Katia Lane's 2nd Grade Class
All Around the World Where will they go after Portland? An adventurous spirit will take these kids all around the world. Grand plans will take these 2nd graders to Australia, France, Spain, Corsica, London, New Zealand, China, Bulgaria, Sun River, New York, Hood River, Greenland, and beyond! Coordinated by Laurie Lesnard Children of Stéphanie Martin-Sewall's 2nd Grade Class
ART PROJECTS - PAGE 27
Coffee with Oregon After studying the landforms of Oregon, the children painted and cut mountains. They used acrylic paint and watercolors. They organized them on a wooden board in the shape of Oregon. It was cut, artistically framed, and finished by Mark Lane. Enjoy this table for years to come. Coordinated by Mark Lane Children of Nathalie Debrun-Sittler's 3rd Grade Class
The Journey Has No Limits Nadine’s 3rd grade class art project was inspired by their science experiment of raising and hatching salmon eggs that were subsequently released into the Tualatin River. Additionally, the children wanted to pay homage to the Native American population of the Pacific Northwest. The class attended a presentation by Jeremy Five Crows, a representative of the Columbia River Intertribal Fish Commission, who explained to them the significance and sacred nature of salmon to the Native population, who respected and loved it. Afterwards, the children wrote poems about the various attributes of salmon. In this turbulent world, each child has an opportunity to paint his or her personal “canvas” with love and respect, whether it is directed toward salmon, or anything or anyone else they encounter on their travels through life. Coordinated by Lisa Keenan and Anna Stern-Lipke Children of Nadine Zaouk-Strapart’s 3rd Grade Class
Cercles Mystiques Inspired by the French artist Yves Klein, who created his own blue hue, kids in Stéphanie’s class created an abstract painting using different shades of blue. Each student created varied surfaces using various methods of applying paint, especially thick and textured application of paint, to the canvas. It is a perfect statement piece for any wall. Coordinated by Deepali Kalia Children of Stephanie Nicollet's 3rd Grade Class

La Nature Artistique / This Is Our Land Art! Art éphémère et collectif créé dans la forêt de l’école avec des éléments naturels: This project is an ephemeral and collective artwork that was created in the FAIS forest with natural elements. Coordinated by Laura Donegan and Henrike Fleuret Children of Françoise Coulon-Lantz's 4th Grade Class
Cardico Hello, we hope you like the map that we drew! Why this map? We were writing letters, like a pen pal, with Vincent Mahé, French illustrator, who illustrates for The New Yorker. He made a book called, Le bureau des poids et des mesures. We read it. We asked him questions like, “How do you come up with what colors to use?” or “Why does your city look like an American city?” He explained why he used vermilion or light blue, and his love for the '50s in the USA. Because we were working on maps, thanks to our unit "The world is changed by explorations and discoveries," we got the idea to do a map of the city Vincent drew, using his tools! At the same time, David showed us an artist called Jazzberry Blue, who does beautiful maps of very famous cities, like Los Angeles. So we did the same thing, simpler than Jazzberry Blue, but using colors of Vincent Mahé! We managed to draw a plan together. We scanned it, and the plan popped up on the computer as a photo. We used an app like Photoshop, which Vincent Mahé uses, where you can edit your own pictures. This app is Pixlr Editor. We colored each block of our plan. And finally, the name. We did a vote on a Friday. We created names on our whiteboards. There was a lot written on the class board, but we came down to a final two, which were "Lakeville" and "Cardico." "Cardico" outvoted "Lakeville" 9 to 6. What’s the origin of "Cardico?" Gillian, the student who came up with it, tried to use the name in another class for another project, but lost the vote. She retried in our class, and "Cardico" won! Coordinated by Laura Donegan Children of David Billeaud's 4th Grade Class

15 Hands After a thorough investigation and perilous digs, the 4th graders were able to get their hands on the only real map of Lewis and Clark’s journey. Certainly damaged by the past years and owners, we offer it today almost “as-is” but finely restored, so that you can hang this masterpiece on your wall. Made with a quill and enhanced by a few touches of white gouache, this piece of 16 panels celebrates what it means to take risks. The Native American inserts remind us that exploring also has consequences. Coordinated by Christine Liu Wen Children of Jean-François Lamy's 4th Grade Class
Portland en Poésie What makes poetry so beautiful and so beloved by so many? It’s not the emotion conveyed in a poem or the idea revealed, it’s the way everything is written and worded. Aurore Molerus’s 5th grade class delved into the world of poetry, learning about the works of many great poets from around the globe. Each student applied a specific form of poetry in crafting their own poem. The Portland skyline was shaped by the very poems the students created, painstakingly written by the students in a calligram design that impresses upon the viewer the true artistry of poetry. Coordinated by Helen Beavers and Lubna Qureshi Children of Aurore Molerus's 5th Grade Class
Piece by Piece to Paris We made this project because it symbolizes our upcoming trip to Paris and our eight years in school. To make our mosaic, our parents chose pictures of us from kindergarten to 5th grade, and we took pictures of ourselves at school. We then printed the pictures and gave each one of them a special code. According to the special code, we glued them on to form "Piece by Piece to Paris." Coordinated by David Grunkemeier, Mary O’Connor, and Megan Shipley Children of Cédric Strapart’s 5th Grade Class
ART PROJECTS - PAGE 30
La Vie en Cire (Life in Wax) Thierry Anne’s nature-inspired 5th grade class experimented with one of the world’s oldest art forms: encaustic. The technique dates back to the ancient Greeks' use of enkaustikos (meaning “burnt in”) to decoratively caulk their ship hulls. Utilizing beeswax and crystallized tree sap, this texturally-rich medium is inherently archival, as embodied in the famed Fayum mummy portraits enduring over 2,000 years. Before embarking on their next chapters, Thierry’s students preserved in beeswax 14 rich reflections of their unique selves and love for the life around them. Coordinated by Guy Martelet, Jessica Munn, and Dory Simons Children of Thierry Anne's 5th Grade Class
Visualizing Vivaldi Sixth grade students investigated melodic contour through the four seasons of Vivaldi. Interpreting what we hear into what we see was the objective of this exploration. Students also played with creating audio clips from contour drawings they created. Seeing music and hearing art left us full of inspiration! Coordinated by Laura Donegan Students of Gilkey 6th Grade
ART PROJECTS - PAGE 31
Petals petal 花瓣 pétale Blütenblatt pétalo pet·al (pĕt′l) n. each of the segments of the corolla of a flower, which are modified leaves and are typically colored corolla 花冠 corolle Blumenkrone corola (kəˈrɒlə) n. the petals of a flower collectively, forming an inner floral envelope
"Petals" consists of 216 individual canvas petals painted by 72 Gilkey 7th grade students. During teacher Stephany Paull's weekly art class, the students brainstormed ideas, voted, and selected this as their gala art project. They painted abstractly on canvas paper, using color mixing theory, to create harmonious color combinations, which they then cut into individual petals. Seventh grade parent and artist Karen Doyle arranged the petals together on a 24" x 24" gallery-wrapped canvas to form a beautiful corolla: all of the petals of a flower together in a whorl of floral leaves. This beautiful canvas, sealed in acrylic glazing medium, is wired and ready to hang in your home. It collectively represents all of the 7th graders at Gilkey as a unit, the way the petals of a flower collectively form the corolla. Coordinated by Karen Doyle Children of Gilkey 7th Grade
Birds-Eye View This year’s 8th graders wanted to do something really different for the Gala art project this year, and came up with a unique way to celebrate the FAIS logo. After “rehearsing” how to illustrate the logo with their bodies arranged on the school soccer field, they were photographed by a drone that hovered above them on a rare, rainless February afternoon. The result is a whimsical black-and-white photo that is instantly recognizable to any FAIS/Gilkey alumnus (and a cool abstract piece for those not in the know). Framed and matted with the school colors in a dramatic shadow box, this piece will add a cool, modern touch to any setting in your home. Coordinated by Helen Townes Children of Gilkey 8th Grade
