THE BIG 3

Whether you’ve been attending Faith Church for a long time or you are a first time visitor, THE PAPER is here to help! Being a part of this church family is a partnership in growth, so we encourage you to be involved in 3 ways:

WORSHIP ON THE WEEKENDS Gather with others to listen to a message from God’s Word, sing, pray, and lift up the name of Jesus. Attend a service at one of our campuses. Our Kids Ministry (infant-5th grade) is a safe place where kids can worship Jesus at their level. Don’t miss the opportunity to gather with others and worship each week. Invite a friend.

CONNECT IN COMMUNITY Being a follower of Jesus was never meant to be done alone. Sole-ranger Christianity usually means discouragement and failure. God has provided a better way-Biblical community. Community keeps us encouraged, helps us build meaningful friendships, and most importantly, helps us grow as Christians. This may be through a Mini-Church, Bible study, or Serving Team. No matter what your age, God does not intend for you to walk through life alone. Be real. Be known.

SERVE OTHERS Join a weekend Serving Team at one of our campuses. Serve in your neighborhood or around the world! God has gifted each of us to do something special. Discover the joy of serving.

GROWING LEADERS AROUND THE WORLD

New mission partners George and Sara Ahiome

Many of us are familiar with the Bible stories where God clearly sends ‘the calling’ for a missionlike Moses hearing his name called out from the burning bush or Samuel who heard the Lord call his name in the night. As for George and Sara Ahiome, their calling didn’t happen like that. There were no lightning strikes, wooden planks to the head, etc. Their ‘calling’ came over a period of a few months, and was filled with lots of questions. “It was God’s still, small voice that gave us peace with decisions we were making along the way. Opened doors where others were closed,” Sara Ahiome said. “We have experienced God’s comfort and prodding more vividly than ever during this time, and I have no doubts that we are walking in His way.” George Ahiome is originally from Nigeria. Born and raised in the northern state of Kano until age fifteen, and then on to the city of Jos for three more years—he’s very familiar with Nigeria. Sara Ahiome (nee Kramer) grew up in South Holland, Illinois. They both attended Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, which is where they met. George and Sara married in June of 2012, and a year later made a short visit to Nigeria. That’s when their longtime friends and mentors, Mike and Megan Ribbens, encouraged the newlyweds to prayerfully consider taking over their roles at the Daniel Center in Abuja, Nigeria. The Ribbens’ were being led to another mission in South Africa.

“Never in my wildest dreams did I think that I would become a missionary,” George said, “I’ve always had a missional heart, but never thought that I would go into full time missions.” After long discussions and lots of prayer, George and Sara decided, with God’s leading, to put in an application to Christian Reformed World Missions for the position of Daniel Center Director. Several meetings and interviews later, they were offered the position. “God is so good and His timing is perfect, even if it does not line up with ours,” said George. “We have seen God at work in the outpouring of encouragement and support from friends and family. He confirms our calling on almost a daily basis and it has been amazing to see obstacles topple over like dominoes.” George and Sara anticipate their move to Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, at the end of September. Nigeria is located in West Africa, north of the Atlantic Ocean. It has a population of about 177 million people, and often referred to as the ‘Giant of Africa.’ Working through the Daniel Center, the Ahiomes’ will roll up their sleeves and learn from the Nigerian people in order to tap into the work God is doing and desires to do in the country. The mission of the Daniel Center is to provide strategic support to churches, specialized ministries, schools, families and businesses in a way that will advance the gospel

throughout the country. George added, “Our goal is to develop thriving reciprocal relationships and to function as a support system to local organizations and individuals who are engaged in kingdom work.” Lamentations 3:22-24 has helped guide George through this season of transition: “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. ‘The Lord is my portion,’ says my soul, ‘therefore I will hope in him.’” Sara mentioned that John 15:18, the story of the vine and the branches, has helped guide her through this time in her life. “Verses 1-5 remind me to focus on remaining in Jesus; He is the life-giver,” she said, “without Him at the center, the ministry (and my life) is fruitless.” So, what if you haven’t felt ‘the calling’ from God, or heard him whisper in your ear? It doesn’t mean He is limiting your accomplishments. “All we have to do is present our bodies as living sacrifices to the Lord and He’ll take care of the rest,” George advises, “God does not call the qualified; He qualifies the called.” Sara says, “Don’t wait until graduation, until you get a job, or until you drive by a billboard telling you what your ‘calling’ is. Start somewhere; God has a way of leading in the midst of our journey.”

“Journaling has helped me to see God’s hand in my life in retrospect.” Sara continues, “And in turn I can trust Him for the future. Remember that God is always shaping and challenging us, and that even if you’re 90 years old, God still has a purpose for you and may change the course of your life completely. Don’t compare your calling with anyone else’s or worry about expectations others may have. He has something uniquely for you.”

AS A PART OF OUR LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT FOCUS, FAITH CHURCH IS EXCITED TO BEGIN SUPPORTING GEORGE AND SARA IN THEIR MISSION TO DEVELOP LEADERS AT THE DANIEL CENTER IN ABUJA, NIGERIA. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO GET MORE CONNECTED WITH GEORGE AND SARA AHIOME’S MINISTRY, YOU CAN EMAIL THEM AT: GAHIOME@CRCNA.ORG AND REQUEST TO BE PUT ON THEIR EMAIL PRAYER LIST. Written by Marjorie DeVries

HONESTY OVER PERFECTION

an insight on church & home by phil krygsheld

My wife Shari and I make a lot of mistakes as parents. We’re not perfect. I work at Faith Church and—confession: we don’t do devotions every night with our kids. The last thing I want to make parents feel is more pressure to DO the right things, as if that will somehow take away all our messiness. It doesn’t work. It might look picture perfect, but the truth is that only the Holy Spirit through Jesus Christ can change our families. Who we are becoming in Christ will determine what we do for Him. One sentence wraps up all the research on families. Parents are the greatest influence on children, BUT they are not the only influence. I stole that sentence—as long as we are being honest— from another church leader. When the church and the home 6

work together to tell the story of God’s love to children, it’s better than each influence working alone. After all, we have the same goal. Jesus loves us, and we want our kids to love Jesus back with their heart, soul, mind and strength. So, how do we work together to accomplish this goal? First, we have to tell the story. We’ve been rescued through Jesus Christ. God has a story for each one of our families, no matter what they look like. God tells us this story throughout the Bible. Lost and broken people, even cold-blooded killers (like Saul), are changed by His amazing love. God’s story of redemption isn’t for perfect people; it’s for people honest enough to admit they need a Savior.

Secondly, we need to do life together. At Faith Church, it’s the desire of every ministry to provide a community for your family. A place to ask questions, express doubts, receive encouragement, breakdown and be built back up, and make memories together. We all need a place to be known and a place where we can be honest about life. It’s tough being honest. I struggle with letting anyone see my weaknesses, but with God’s help, I can break down those walls and move to a place of freedom. It’s our desire to keep sharing God’s story of redemption at Faith Church. As we move forward together, let’s remember that God did everything for us through Jesus Christ. This truth will humble us, move us into authentic communities and make God’s story of redemption irresistible to all families.

WHO ARE THE

DRANGERS My name is Tad Dranger and my wife’s name is Kim. I grew up in Sauk Village, IL and Kim is from DeKalb, IL. We currently live in Chesterton, IN and have a little boy named Peter who will be three years old this month. My story begins in 2000, the year I graduated from college. During the next five or six years, I made some choices that took me far from God. In the summer of 2006, I reached a place in my life where I felt like my only choice was to ask my parents if I could return home for a bit. Shortly after, I was surprised to see a church building in place of what I had always known as farmland. I grew curious and started attending Sunday services, reading God’s word, and got plugged into Catalyst, a ministry for 20-30 years olds. Through this ministry, I met a group of people who, for the

generations, improving biblical handling of money, renewing hope and life in broken people, and using people to provide essential needs for others such as food, shelter, clothes, and utilities are some of the examples we experienced. We have met many people who were disconnected from God for years who now have a home at Faith Church.

Kim co-leads MOPS at Valparaiso and volunteers in Treasureland. I serve as a deacon, on the Frontline Team as well as leading the Financial Peace University class at Valpo. We connect to others first time in my life, I didn’t through Men of Faith, Womhave to meet a standard in en’s Bible Study and particiorder to belong. I could be my- pating in church community self and I felt accepted. God events like First Sunday at used Faith Church to share Valpo. This summer we’ve and model Christ through Cat- made it our goal to spend time alyst and it completely saved with others outside of church and transformed my life. by inviting them to our home. Kim and I met a few years later through a Christian dating website and we got married in June 2010. We started attending Faith Church in Dyer together, we served at the Hammond campus during their launch, and now we worship in Valparaiso. We have seen God do some incredible things at Faith Church. What amazes us the most is the constant movement of God reconnecting people to Himself. Leading men to accept accountability from other men, making marriages healthier, building Mini-Churches that cross 2-3

God has been doing great things in our lives. Recently, he has helped Kim step outside her comfort zone. By leading MOPS, He has given her the opportunity to develop deeper friendships with other women. God is using my own competitive nature to challenge people to evaluate if they are using their resources – time, talent, and influence – to make connections for Christ. Through God, Kim and I have a fun, hard-working and loving marriage. He has blessed us richly with our healthy, playful little boy Peter.

ELIM HOPE PACKS Both poverty and disability drive people to the margins of society. But God loves all of His creation equally and calls us to do the same. HOPE Packs create an opportunity for you to care for these two groups with one gift. Your one gift of school supplies creates work and ministry opportunities for men and women with disabilities and improves access to education for children growing up in poverty. HOW IT WORKS: 1. You bring in school supplies from the supply list available on the web site, along with $6 to help cover the cost of shipping per pack and drop in the collection bins at Dyer, Highland, and Valpo campuses.

2. Faith Church sorts out the supplies and brings to Elim Christian Services.

3. Adults with special needs assemble and pack the supplies, preparing them for shipment around the world.

4. Children in impoverished areas are able to attend schools, because they have the proper materials.

IMPORTANT DATES: August 2/3: Elim Hope Packs Launch at Dyer, Highland and Valpo campuses August 16/17: Final collection date at participating campuses Elim Hope Packs is a school supply drive that Faith Church participates each year as a way we can impact our surrounding community and the world through our Community Development Focus Area.
