R E S TO R I N G A N D TRANSFORMING THE WORLD ONE RELATIONSHIP AT A TIME

Faith Church believes all followers of Christ are called to a higher purpose - that as “salt and light we have been called to make a difference in the world. We should be actively engaged in building relationships inside and outside of the church-deeper relationships with God and other Faith Church members certainly, but also with co-workers, neighbors and friends outside the church community. In these relationships, we display and share the transforming love of Jesus Christ.

FAITH FAMILY HIG H L I G H T SARAH MEADE

My name is Sarah Meade and I am 30 years old. I am a big believer in “Everything happens for a reason.” Earlier this year on January 27 around 9:30 AM, I was involved in a very serious side impact car collision. I remember staring at my immobile hands and realizing I was completely paralyzed. Thankfully, my side airbags had trapped me into my seat because my neck was broken, or so I thought. I prayed no one would touch me who wasn’t equipped with a neck brace or medical knowledge. I had been traveling with my six month old baby in the backseat; the paramedic must have realized I was alert and oriented, and assured me of my baby’s safety, “Baby’s ok, not even a scratch.” Praise the Lord! I was in so much pain, everything from the neck down hurt. I could taste blood from biting my tongue. I tried focusing on breathing, praying and trying to assure myself the pain wouldn’t last forever. A firefighter cut me out of the car, a paramedic helped pull me into the ambulance and an EMT bagged me on the way to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Crown Point. On the way, I lost consciousness and woke up in an unfamiliar hospital. I was thankful to see students standing with doctors, which meant I was at a trauma hospital. I would later learn I had been transported to Loyola University Medical Center.

4

I heard the doctors and students discussing whether they should perform surgery in the room as well as the future “possibilities”. The Team was very honest with me: only 8% of people with an AOD trauma (internal decapitation) survived transportation to the hospital, I had a 50% chance of making it through the night and only 5% of the patients that survive through the night are eligible for surgery. This gave me a 0.2% chance of living, statistically speaking. I trusted the Loyola Team and prayed they would make the best decisions for me. In preparation for my spinal fusion, the neurosurgeon held my head for over two hours while the surgical team turned my body into position. After they successfully fused my spine, I was monitored closely. When I was stable enough, I underwent another surgery, this time for my pelvis. Throughout all this time, I prayed. I leaned on God as I worried about my family, “God, where is my family? Do they know what happened? Tell them. Tell Matt (my husband) I will be ok.” I prayed for God to give me strength to go on. At one point, in my peripheral vision, I saw a man sitting to my left. He was surrounded by gold light. I felt calm in his presence and all my worries disappeared. We didn’t talk, it was all an emotional connection. I didn’t question who he was or why he was there. I knew from then on I would be ok.

Once I was stabilized after surgery, the doctors came in to talk to me. They explained I was outbreathing the ventilator and would need to be put on a tracheotomy. They also told me I would be a quadriplegic. This statement made me cry the most. By this time, my friend, Erica, had arrived at the hospital. She was there to hear this news. She winked at me and said, “no you won’t.” I held onto this, ignoring the doctor’s diagnosis, praying I would move - even just one finger. Eventually, I was given the opportunity to use a letterboard: blink once for “no”, twice for “yes” when selecting a letter. Its use was a lengthy process, but it afforded me the opportunity to help make my own medical decisions. Sometimes my family would catch me rolling my eyes and that made them laugh, knowing their same Sarah was still with them. Over time, I started moving a finger and then a toe. After a couple of weeks, I was moving my hand and requested to use a laptop to communicate. Each day I was gaining more and more strength. I then started moving my limbs and the doctors ordered physical therapy. I never thought rolling and sitting could be so strenuous!

“I FEEL SO ALONE”

He said

“I WILL

NEVER

LEAVE YOU”

Hebrews 13:5 5

After a month in the ICU, I was sent to a rehabilitation hospital in Chicago, Shirley Ryan Ability Lab. They did a thorough examination and went through every injury and diagnosis: Atlanto-Occipital dislocation, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, multiple pelvic fractures, pelvic SI-dislocation, paralysis, pneumonia, blood clots, infection, spleen and liver lacerations, a right ankle fracture, double vision and vestibular (balance) issues. In the first week of rehabilitation, they had me standing and walking short distances! During this journey, I have had to relearn how to walk, talk, eat, use the restroom, and so much more. My feeding tube was removed a couple of months ago, and I couldn’t have been more thankful to drink water again. During all this time, especially the period in which I was immobile, I prayed every day to get better. My relationship with God became just that, a relationship. I talked to Him daily. I prayed for strength, I praised Him during the milestones, and I continue to count my blessings - of being the 0.2% that is living. Although I am still recovering, waking up to my biggest miracle - my little girl - makes everyday life struggles worth it. Seeing that smiling, happy baby with “not a scratch” on her is the highlight of my day. I have no doubt in my mind, God kept us here for a reason. Part of that reason is to share this personal testimony with you. I am so blessed to be here!

MID-YEAR FINANCIAL FINANCIAL UPDATE UPDATE BY BRIAN DENNERT

JANUARY - JULY 2018

GIVING Giving to the general fund of Faith Church for the first half of the year was $3,074,354, which is a 6% increase compared to this time last year. Giving in each of the first two quarters exceeded $1,500,000, which is higher than any previous period (outside of the last quarter of the year when we usually see a bump in giving). An additional $175,000 was given towards Christian Aid, Faith Family Market, Building Repairs and Improvements, Debt Reduction, and SpringHill Camp scholarships. We also have many more Faith Church families sponsoring children in Simbi, Rwanda through World Vision. Once again, we have seen that Faith Church is a generous church - Thank You for your generosity and faithfulness!

SPENDING Our staff and deacons continue to monitor expenses. We have spent 96.8% of our allotted budget for the first half of the year. Our expenses have been broken down into these categories: 57.7% for staffing, 13.3% for missions and partnerships, and 29% for ministries and operations (which includes 7% towards paying the mortgages on Dyer and Cedar Lake buildings).

4.0 3.5 3.0 2.5 2.0 1.5 1.0 0.5 0.0

While our giving varies throughout the year and has historically been strongest in the last quarter, our budgeted expenses have been spread out fairly evenly in 2018 (51% of expenses in the 1st half of the year, 49% in the second half of the year).

BIG PICTURE While giving has been up during the first half of the year, we are only at 84.3% of our year-to-date giving goal, which equals a gap of approx. $590,000 between giving received and our budgeted goal. We give in response to God’s grace in our lives and recognition that all comes from Him - giving back what God has blessed us with in worship and in desire for him to use the resources to transform and restore the lives of people near and far. Let us be faithful, joyful and worshipful in our giving to him!

MISSIONS TRIP UPDATE SPRINGHILL JONI & FRIENDS

SPRINGHILL When I hear the word SpringHill, I think of spies, Summer Leaders and smiles. Traveling from town to town with multiple water slides, a rockwall and so much more, SpringHill strives “to glorify God by creating life-impacting experiences that enable young people to know Jesus Christ and to grow in their relationship with Him.” This past summer, children from every type of background came together, not just to climb a rope ladder, but to learn they are made by God and loved by God. In this summer alone at Faith Church, 19% of campers committed their lives to Jesus for the first time and 28% of campers recommitted their lives to Jesus! Campers learned about two secret agents who went off the path from the director and made a mistake, but in the end the director forgave them. The director always ends His monologue with, “Remember, I am with you always.” The coolest part about this is our response; all Summer Leaders and campers get to say, “Even to the end of the age.” I challenge you, Faith Church, to remind yourself daily that God is with you always, even to the end of the age and you never know, the next time you may encounter God may be climbing a rockwall.

JONI & FRIENDS For the sixth consecutive summer, Faith Church was able to be part of the Joni & Friends Family Retreat in Muskegon, MI. Joni & Friends (founded by Joni Eareckson Tada, ministering to individuals with disabilities) rents Maranatha Conference Grounds for two separate weeks every June with the intent of giving families who have a member with special needs a week of vacation, relaxation, fun and the gospel. This year, there were six families from Faith Church who were able to participate, plus another 20 volunteers who helped serve and make the week a success! Members of the Faith serving team were able to help with leadership (kids programs, sibling programs, behavioral support and worship) and with family support (these volunteers are called “STMs” - Short Term Missionaries). Each STM is paired with a camper and gives support to the entire family throughout the week as families get to participate in worship, teaching, (delicious) meals, swimming, boating, tubing, horseback riding, zip-lining, rock-climbing, dancing… the list goes on! As we return, it is our desire to bring as much of the heart of Family Retreat as we possibly can back to Faith Church and to the NWI Region. As many of the families and STMs say, it’s a ‘taste of heaven’! cont. on pg 13

SUFFERING

16

Our family would categorize 2014 as “a year from hell”. Our oldest daughter had medical issues that took months to diagnose and treat. I was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor. Our son faced continual pain as he grew rapidly. We found out our youngest daughter had a hole in her heart which required a procedure to insert a device and close the hole, in turn, protecting her from the potential of a future stroke. And our van was totaled in an accident as my wife was headed home from bible study. I believe we asked the normal questions. Why is this happening to us? Why is something happening to all of us? Where is God while all of this is happening? Why is God allowing this to happen? Will it stop? Will we ever get a break from these things? The reality is we (and everyone we know) go through some level of suffering at some point in our lives. And the questions come, don’t they? I am excited for this fall as Faith Church is going to do a series on the topic of Suffering. We are going to hopefully provide God’s answers to the above questions and many more. We have the privilege of kicking off the series on October 13/14 to hear from Michael Chitwood. Michael is a friend of Faith Church who serves as one of the leaders for Team World Vision. He has visited us numerous times, but in October, he will be sharing his personal story, one he recorded in his book, “The Ability to Endure”. He will share about suffering and losing faith, but then finding hope in some really strange places. Michael will talk to us about times when he wanted to give up and God gave him the ability to keep on going That weekend, and the entire series, will be a powerful time of seeking God’s face and perspective on suffering. Be in prayer for how God may want to use the stories of the sufferings in your life to help someone else. Often, when we have suffering, once we are through that period we want to lock it up, put it away and never revisit it. However, sometimes our greatest areas of ministry can be birthed from our greatest areas of hurt. During this series, please be open to God’s leading! For many, you know the questions we ask around suffering can sometimes keep us from God or bring separation from Him. So please also be in prayer about who you can invite to come, learn and receive God’s hope that is available to us even in the midst of our suffering.

BEHOLD THE WONDER AD W

BY: RYA N M AT T H YS S E - WO R S H I P & ARTS DIRECTOR hat is Christmas to you? Simply a season “where the snow is glistening” as you “ride a one horse open sleigh” while looking for “a partridge in a pear tree”? Surely we can look forward to more than office parties, crowded shopping malls and ugly sweaters!

Behold the Wonder was created to celebrate the story of Jesus in a way that people of all ages could enjoy. This 90-minute family-friendly, high-energy, multi-sensory experience will happen again in December at the Dyer Campus and you will not want to miss it! More than anything, Behold the Wonder serves as an outreach event. Our desire is to connect every heart to Jesus, but especially for those who may be far from God. As you make your Christmas plans, would you consider inviting a family member, co-worker or neighbor to hear some inspiring (maybe even facemelting) music that tells the story of how our God came to our rescue? We want you to come for this incredible performance, but please don’t come alone! Bring someone with you and help make this Christmas more meaningful than ever. Behold the Wonder will run at Faith Church Dyer on December 6-8 with nightly performances at 7 PM and a Saturday matinee at 3 PM. Tickets will go on sale in November for $7 at beholdthewonder.org. 19

BEECHER PASTOR’S NOTE If you’re reading this publication, you must be curious about the life and culture of Faith Church - who we are, what we believe, and how we are involved and on mission in our community. Since opening the Beecher Campus in 2012, our Gospel focus has been reaching the 20,000 people who live in the rural communities of Beecher, Grant Park and Peotone. We are incredibly grateful to God for the sincere, deepening relationships within our church family, but most notably, those outside our walls - with the public schools and local government officials in our area. If you are looking for a church family that is active in the community (even if you live outside our focus area!), we would be honored to have you at one of our Sunday morning services - 9 & 11 AM - and welcome you into the ebb and flow of weekday ministry. Come as you are and we’ll learn together about the truth, love, and grace of Jesus Christ through biblical teaching and real-life application as we serve God and others throughout the week. We hope you’ll join us! Pastor Nathan Prairie

DYER PASTOR’S NOTE When I started serving Faith over 25 years ago, we were a family of six. My wife Laurie, our four children and their spouses, and grandchildren now number 16. In comparison, Faith Church has grown from one church with 250 people to now having six sites with thousands of wonderful people. God is a God of fruitfulness and reproduction. Laurie and I have found joy in every season of life. We are currently “empty nesters” which allows us to cherish our loving grandchildren in all their wonder. HIGHLAND PASTOR’S NOTE Thanks for reading The Paper! I have been on the staff at Faith since 2004 and have been pastoring at Faith Highland since we started in 2013. I was excited to come for the start of Faith Highland to see both the community reached for Jesus Christ and to experience existing people growing in their relationship with him. Over these last five years it has been a joy to watch God do both of those things! I hope and pray that you will connect at Faith Highland, or wherever the best fit is for you, so you can grow and be a part of God’s Kingdom. On the personal side, my wife Kristin and I have been married for 21 years. We have three children, Anneke (19), Justin (17) and Kate (14). Kristin is a Pre-K teacher. For fun we enjoy watching “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee,” going downtown when we can and hanging out with friends. I also enjoy collecting baseball and football cards. It’s an exciting time to be at Faith Highland as we expand our building’s footprint and, hopefully, our impact! Pastor Jason DeVries

SCHERERVILLE PASTOR’S NOTE

Welcome to Faith Church Schererville! My name is Aaron Klein, and I have the privilege of pastoring our Schererville location. My wife, Nicole, and I moved to the area in 2017 with our 4 children: Adriana (16), Nathaniel (14), Gabriel (12) and Samuel (10). It’s been a joy to be a part of such a warm and welcoming church. We’ve served at churches on the East Coast (Pennsylvania) and in the Southeast (Florida), but it’s great to be back home where our roots are here in the Midwest region. Throughout our ministry, we’ve had a passion for living a missional lifestyle through relationships, and so it’s been awesome to see how well we’ve fit with Faith Church’s belief in “restoring the world one relationship at a time.” If you’re the type of person who’s felt “hurt by the church” or “burned by the church;” or if you’ve just been “wondering about this whole God thing,” we promise you’ll find a diverse community of people who love to walk together in relationship. And we do so recognizing that we’re an imperfect people trying to follow a perfect God. We love our campus, and we invite you to come join us at 10 AM at Campagna Academy. Come see how we’re growing people deep in their walk with Jesus and wide in their witness to the world. I’m looking forward to meeting you soon! Pastor Aaron Klein
