W H E N A D O N AT I O N MEANS ANOTHER CHANCE A story of God’s faithfulness in Mark & Chris Nordin’s lives
The same disease that took the life of his grandfather and put his mother on dialysis for years was threatening the same for Mark Nordin. Last April, Mark’s nephrologist, a doctor who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of kidney disorders, told him his congenital kidney disease was turning critical and he needed a transplant. Mark and his wife, Chris, were an active couple and the thought of dialysis for 10 hours a day and living with a catheter was less than ideal. Chris volunteered her kidney, but sadly she was not a direct match for Mark. After learning about Northwestern Medicine’s living donor program, they found a solution. In an article with The Hinsdalean, Chris said, “We went to Northwestern in December of 2016 to learn about donation. It typically takes at least five years to find a match through traditional donations. But if you have a live donor, your chances that it could happen sooner are much better.”
Mark, 67, had undergone open heart surgery a couple of years before the kidney transplant and they knew there was always a concern for rejection of the transplanted organ. In addition, Mark’s creatinine levels pre-surgery were dangerously high compared to those with healthy kidneys; creatinine is a chemical waste product in the blood that passes through the kidneys to be filtered and eliminated in urine. Going into surgery, Mark’s level was at seven and yet another miraculous result followed. “The next morning it was down to a five,” Mark said. “Then eight hours later it was at three. By the next day it was down to 1.6. God had the kidney start working as soon as they put it in me. That was really kind of cool.” In no time, both Mark and Chris were back to living their active lives. Whether it be playing tennis or scuba diving, the Nordins are taking full advantage of their second chance at life together.
Instead of a five year wait, it was only a couple of weeks before a donor from California was found as a potential match. This miraculous donation meant a life-saving surgery for Mark mid-May. “My kidney got flown out to California. The live donor out there had their surgery and the kidney was flown red-eye back here, so my husband had his surgery the next day,” Chris said in The Hinsdalean interview.
Repeatedly throughout the Nordin’s story, God’s healing hand is so evident. His faithfulness prevailed through a generous wife, a miraculous donor match, and an incredibly smooth surgery and recovery. We praise God with the Nordins for their incredible testimony of faith. “We both feel extremely blessed that we had the opportunity to get him a new kidney,” Chris said. The couple continually prays for those going through similar trials, and encourages people to have faith and be courageous in the face of adversity.
* Mark and Chris Nordin have been members of Faith Church since 2003 and attend services at the Dyer Campus.

THOUGHTS & REFLECTIONS FROM ELDER BOB EENIGENBURG
My wife, Marianne, and I transferred to Faith Church in 2006. We both grew up in Christian families with church community and worship being an important part of our lives. We felt called to leave the comfort and familiarity of the church we were in, in order to join Faith Church and serve where the Lord needed us.
Some of the exciting things I have been privileged to see while being a part of Faith Church include:
We had only been at Faith Dyer for a few months when it was announced a second campus was going to be launching in Cedar Lake. Although we lived in Lansing, Illinois, we signedup for set up and tear down as the church would be meeting at Hanover Central High School on Sundays. We thought we’d assist with the campus launch as temporary volunteers, thinking perhaps another campus would open up near our region someday.
3. the transformation occurring in people in what I consider “spiritual hotspots” of Faith Church, including men’s & women’s groups, MomsNation, Faith Kids, Overcomers, youth groups, Reflectors, Journey groups, mission trips, Celebrate Recovery, among many others; and
Additionally, I decided to join two ministries at Faith Dyer, the Prayer Team and a newly formed men’s group known currently as Men of Faith. Men of Faith was life changing for me from the first meeting I attended - I never had other men lay hands on me and pray for me. It was transformational! Not long after, Marianne and I joined a Journey Group (The Journey is a 22-week course designed for a small group to be intentional about focusing on their relationship with Jesus). Going through The Journey was foundational for me! The curriculum begins with three questions: Who is God? Who am I? What does God desire to do through me? Working through this curriculum helped me in every aspect of my life. It helped me become more intentional about my walk with the Lord as well as learning how to come alongside others. Eight years ago, I became an elder at our former-Hammond Campus when it launched; it was the third campus of Faith Church. I am now an elder at Faith Munster, following the coming together of the Hammond Campus and Trinity Church in 2017.
1.the growth of Faith Church from one campus to six; 2. along with that, the numeric growth of more people coming to worship and growing in Christ;
4. the beautiful work the Lord has done in bringing two different congregations together to become the Munster Campus! I am especially amazed at the joy and excitement of new Christians, which usually highlights my deficiencies of the same. I am learning from them! I am grateful to be an elder in a church where the Word is being faithfully preached and leaders are coming alongside of people for their spiritual growth. I encourage you to give attention to your spiritual walk, not only that you come for worship on the weekends but also that you spend time with Jesus and read His Word. I love the Bible passage in Acts 4, the part where Peter and John were arrested and brought before the religious authorities for questioning because they were teaching the people and proclaiming the Good News of Jesus. Verse 13 says this about the authorities after they questioned Peter and John, “Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus.” Continue to spend time with the Lord in worship, through community with other believersand your own personal time with Him. He will continue to do good works in and through you! 6
FAMILY RETREAT SCHOLARSHIP MEAL WEDNESDAY, NOV 20 | 6 PM FAITH DYER The Reflectors Ministry will be providing and serving the “Wednesdays” meal at Faith Dyer. All proceeds from the evening will go directly towards the Joni & Friends Family Retreat Scholarship Fund, to help families from Reflectors experience retreat next summer.

DOERS OF THE WORD By Kassidy Weemhoff
We are not just a church building, not just a group of people and not just a weekly gathering of believers. We are Spirit-seekers, action-takers, Gospel-believers and people-lovers. Faith Church does not only hear the Word but lives out the Word. In James 1:22, it says, “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” We seek to live out God’s Word and to serve the least, lost and broken. Each Faith Church campus chooses to engage with their community in unique ways, identifying the needs near them and striving to create life-giving connections. This season, we want to identify some of the communitycentered ministries of Faith Church and give you, our readers, more insight. Faith Church, we challenge you to be doers of the Word and applaud you for furthering God’s kingdom, one relationship at a time.

Washington Township Food Pantry: We donated the groceries from our Faith Family Market to this effort organized by the residents of Beecher. We take up food collections for them and send volunteers to help staff the Pantry. Our congregation also provides seasonal boxed meals during the holidays.
•
Mobile Food Pantry: In conjunction with the Northern Illinois Food Bank, we host and staff this mobile food distribution effort approximately 8 times per year. It is available to anyone with an Illinois zip code.

•
Beecher Prayer Letter: Ours contains a section to pray for the Village of Beecher’s elected officials, town trustees, school faculty & staff, first responders, library & post office staff, among others, on a rotating basis. 4th of July Festival: We enter a float in the parade and also organize a group of volunteers to cover the food service provided for three days of the festival. This includes taking orders, preparing & serving food, etc. All proceeds go to the Beecher 4th of July Commission for the following year. Lunch to faculty & staff of Beecher School District: Different ministry groups provide lunch for the Elementary, Junior High and High School faculty & staff on a yearly basis.
•
SpringHill Day Camp (July 8-12): Faith Beecher hosts SpringHill Day Camp, which is held at Beecher Junior High each summer. We participate in the Beecher Garage Sale days in June to raise funds for scholarships for Beecher area children to attend SpringHill Day Camp (and SpringHill Winter Retreat as well). Of the kids who attended this year’s Day Camp, 79% were from the community.
•
Student Ministry: Approximately 70% of the students who attend Student Ministries on Friday nights are from the Beecher community and are not members of Faith Beecher. In addition, a fundraiser is conducted each fall to help community students attend the SpringHill Winter Retreat.
•
MomsNation: Beecher Littles and Beecher Middles meet twice monthly on Thursdays and Fridays, respectively, at our campus. Approximately 22% of participants are from the community / do not have a home church. We are grateful to be able to serve as a site where moms can be encouraged, equipped and empowered by other moms.
•
Emergency Evacuation Center: We serve as the location where Beecher Junior High students and faculty & staff can come to in case of an emergency in their building.
•
Partnerships with Beecher Clubs: We partner with various groups in the community. For example, we have helped the Beecher Lion’s Club at various events, including their Pork Chop dinner, and in turn, they have assisted us with things like serving lunch the last day of SpringHill Day Camp. Additionally, we’ve partnered with the Beecher PTO to help staff various fundraisers they’ve held, most notably a Color Run to raise funds for playground equipment.

Kids Hope: We have mentors at MacArthur Elementary School, but we’ve done various other programs with them too. For example, we host appreciation breakfasts and lunches for the faculty and staff to show how much we love and appreciate them. Most recently, we raised funds to build a GaGa Ball court at the school (gagaballpits. com). Due to a surplus in giving, we are also able to purchase additional balls and accessories. The school is very excited for this new addition to the playground!
•
Rummage Sale: We host an annual rummage sale, with proceeds going towards SpringHill scholarships for community kids who can’t afford the cost to attend.

•
Miscellaneous: We’re currently assessing opportunities we can provide to the community through the use of our back lawn, such as a baseball pitching clinic or a soccer camp. We believe hosting an activity like the ones mentioned would be a great opportunity for us to to make new connections with more people in the Cedar Lake area.
• •
MomsNation: Cedar Lake Littles and Cedar Lake Middles meet twice monthly on Thursday and Wednesday, respectively, at our campus. Approximately 13% of participants are from the community / do not have a home church. We are grateful to be able to serve as a site where moms can be encouraged, equipped and empowered by other moms.

Kids Hope: We have mentors from the Dyer Campus who serve at Bibich Elementary School in Dyer and Strassburg Elementary in Sauk Village. Throughout the year, we like to host appreciation breakfasts and lunches for the faculty and staff at the schools to show how much we love and appreciate them. Strassburg Elementary: We’ve been working hard to establish relationships in the Sauk Village community, particularly in the schools. Examples of our most current reach includes: On the last day of the 2018-2019 school year, Dyer staff members volunteered to help (and play) during the school’s Field Day. Beautification Day - On June 22, a team painted murals at Strassburg Elementary, making a colorful and joyful impact on the environment. (We are hoping to do a second one in February 2020.) Elim Hope Packs - Our campus raised $13,000 to provide school supplies for all the students of Strassburg Elementary on their first day of school. We partnered with Elim, who assembled the Hope Packs and joined us on August 19 to distribute them to the students. Our intention was to make the first day back-to-school exciting for everyone!

FINANCIAL U P D AT E BY BRIAN DENNERT
Just as it is wise to go to the doctor for a yearly check-up, we seek to provide periodic updates on our church’s financial health. In examining a number of key financial “health” markers, we see that we are in good shape as we move into the latter half of 2019.
GIVING AND EXPENSES
During the first six months of 2019, the people of Faith Church have given over $3.3 million towards the General Fund (our operating budget). This number marks an 11% increase over the same span in 2018, with every campus seeing an increase in giving in 2019. Thank You for your amazing generosity so far this year!
Our staff and deacons monitor expenses; through the end of June, we spent around 96% of our allocated budget for this time period (the offerings were about 92% of the giving goal for the time) and expenses are in line with 2018 expenses for the same time period.
These numbers show we are tracking well and a strong finish in 2019 will help us meet our churchwide giving goal, which is $7,269,600. The Stewardship Deacons want to encourage you to finish the year strong so we can continue to build momentum as we make ministry plans and a budget for 2020.
UPDATE ON VALPARAISO PROPERTY
Shortly after announcing we were going to close our Valparaiso campus in early 2018, Liberty Bible Church of Chesterton approached us about an interest in starting a campus in Valparaiso. We entered into an agreement for them to lease our building there, with Liberty launching their Valparaiso campus the week after we closed our campus there (and enfolding attenders and staff). Later in 2018, we came to an agreement on a new lease with an option for them to buy the property; Liberty exercised the purchase option earlier this year, with the closing on the property at the end of May. It has been amazing to see how God has worked in this situation, as Liberty Bible Church’s Valparaiso campus is growing. The deacons and Consistory decided to earmark the funds received from this sale towards Building Repairs and Improvements, as long-term planning has identified a number of large repair and replacement needs that will be happening at our campuses in the next few years (roofs, flooring, parking lots, etc.). Having these capital reserve funds allows us to be ready for these expenses while continuing to move forward in ministry.
MORTGAGES
In review, you may note our expenses are greater than giving so far in 2019; this is common at this point in the year as our expenses are spread out fairly evenly over the 12 month period, while historically over 33% of giving occurs in the last three months of the year. While our expenses yearto-date are higher than our income, our expenses over the past 12 months (July 2018-June 2019) are less than the giving for the same time period. We continue to seek to be good stewards of what has been entrusted to us and also to seek long-term, sustainable financial health as a church.
As of the end of June, our church’s debt is at a little over $1.8 million, with about $430,000 remaining on our mortgage in Dyer and a little over $1,380,000 on the mortgage in Cedar Lake. About 7% of our annual budget currently goes towards paying off these mortgages. Both the total debt and its percentage of our budget are low for churches of our size. We continue to make regular payments on these loans and also receive debt reduction gifts to pay down the principal. With current payments, our Dyer mortgage is set to be paid off by this time next year (August 2020); we would love to have it paid off in full before then, allowing us to lower the mortgage amount in Cedar Lake (and pay it off early). Paying off these mortgages would open up money in the budget to be used for ministry and expansion as our ministry and church continues to grow. 15

BEECHER PASTOR’S NOTE If you’re reading this publication, you must be curious about the life and culture of Faith Church - who we are, what we believe, and how we are involved and on mission in our community. Since opening the Beecher Campus in 2012, our Gospel focus has been reaching the 20,000 people who live in the rural communities of Beecher, Grant Park and Peotone. We are incredibly grateful to God for the sincere, deepening relationships within our church family, but most notably, those outside our walls - with the public schools and local government officials in our area. If you are looking for a church family that is active in the community (even if you live outside our focus area!), we would be honored to have you at one of our Sunday morning services - 9 & 11 AM - and welcome you into the ebb and flow of weekday ministry. Come as you are and we’ll learn together about the truth, love and grace of Jesus Christ through biblical teaching and real-life application as we serve God and others throughout the week. We hope you’ll join us! Pastor Nathan Prairie

CEDAR LAKE PASTOR’S NOTE Welcome to Faith Church. I am excited you are here! It is our hope as you join us on the journey through life that you find places of deep connection with Jesus and others in this community. It has personally been life giving for me to be a part of the Faith Church family for the last 20 years. My wife, Karla, and I and our four kids are living proof that ordinary, imperfect people can belong in this community of believers. If you have some “baggage” from your past, are dealing with some issues or even just trying to figure out your next steps in life, Faith Church welcomes you! As we get to know each other, it is our desire the relationships that are formed are meaningful and caring. There are many ways to connect through small groups and serving, and we would be glad to assist you in any way we can. I look forward to meeting you! DYER PASTOR’S NOTE When I started serving Faith over 25 years ago, we were a family of six. My wife, Laurie, our four children, plus their spouses and children, now number 17. In comparison, Faith Church has grown from one church with 250 people to now having six sites with thousands of wonderful people. God is a God of fruitfulness and reproduction. Laurie and I have found joy in every season of life. We are currently “empty nesters,” which allows us to cherish our loving grandchildren in all their wonder. This season also provides unique opportunities for us to serve God’s world in its beauty and in its gospel impact. God is moving in mighty ways at Faith Church and I am excited to see where He will lead! Pastor Bob Bouwer

HIGHLAND PASTOR’S NOTE Welcome to Faith Highland! I am so glad that you are taking the time to read this! I just want to let you know who we are. We are a church that believes Jesus is the only way for us to be restored in our relationship with God. When we gather, we want to praise Him for who He is and we want to learn more about Him so our relationship can grow. When we scatter and leave our building, we want to serve Him and share Him with whoever we have relationships with. Do we get it right all the time? Nope. Do we ever mess it up? Definitely. But it doesn’t stop us from trying. We’d love to build a relationship with you and have you be a part of our community at Faith Highland. Please let us know how we can help! Pastor Jason DeVries

MUNSTER PASTOR’S NOTE My name is Charlie Contreras and I am the campus pastor at Faith Munster. My wife, Anne, and I have been at Faith Church for over 13 years. We have two children, Gabriel (14) and Gracie (12). Anne works for Faith Church as the Faith Kids 3-5 year old Director and Munster Faith Kids Director. It is a joy to be a part of a church where we see God transforming lives with the love of Jesus. We are excited to see people growing in their faith and reaching out to serve in the church and their community. We love that God empowers us to go out and love people in our diverse world, to share the love of Christ with them and help them connect in His church. SCHERERVILLE PASTOR’S NOTE Welcome to Faith Church Schererville! My name is Aaron Klein and I have the privilege of pastoring our Schererville location. My wife, Nicole, and I moved to the area in 2017 with our four children: Adriana (17), Nathaniel (15), Gabriel (13) and Samuel (11). It’s been a joy to be a part of such a warm and welcoming church. We’ve served at churches on the East Coast (Pennsylvania) and in the Southeast (Florida), but it’s great to be back home where our roots are here in the Midwest region. Throughout our ministry, we’ve had a passion for living a missional lifestyle through relationships, and so it’s been awesome to see how well we’ve fit with Faith Church’s belief in restoring the world one relationship at a time. If you’re the type of person who’s felt “hurt by the church” or “burned by the church;” or if you’ve just been “wondering about this whole God thing,” we promise you’ll find a diverse community of people who love to walk together in relationship. And we do so recognizing that we’re an imperfect people trying to follow a perfect God. We love our campus and we invite you to come join us at 10 AM at Campagna Academy. Come see how we’re growing people deep in their walk with Jesus and wide in their witness to the world. I’m looking forward to meeting you soon! Pastor Aaron Klein
