Whether you’ve been attending Faith Church for a long time or you are a first time visitor, THE PAPER is here to help! Being a part of this church family is a partnership in growth, so we encourage you to be involved in 3 ways:

1 | WORSHIP ON THE WEEKENDS Gather with others to listen to a message from God’s Word, sing, pray and lift up the name of Jesus. Attend a service at one of our campuses. Faith Kids (infants5th grade) is a safe place where kids can worship Jesus at their level. Don’t miss the opportunity to gather with others and worship each week. Invite a friend.

2 | CONNECT IN COMMUNITY Being a follower of Jesus was never meant to be done alone. Sole-ranger Christianity usually means discouragement and failure. God has provided a better way- Biblical community. Community keeps us encouraged, helps us build meaningful friendships, and most importantly, helps us grow as Christians. This can be through a Mini-Church, Bible Study or Serving Team. No matter what your age, God does not intend for you to walk through life alone. Be real. Be known.

3 | SERVE OTHERS Join a weekend Serving Team at one of our campuses, serve in your neighborhood or around the world! God has gifted each of us to do something special. Discover the joy of serving.

FAITH FAMILY H IG H L I G H T T H E I M I G FA M I LY

WHAT ARE YOUR NAMES? Jason, Rebecca, Josiah, Isaac & Rachel Imig

WHERE ARE YOU FROM? Beecher, IL

HOW DID YOU GET CONNECTED TO FAITH CHURCH? We became connected to the church through the MOPS group that was up and coming in our own town! We have enjoyed seeing God using Faith Church to reach the lost through its service to the community and its support of each other along life’s journeys.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT FAITH CHURCH? Things we love about Faith Church are the dynamic teachings and beautiful worship that radiate from the church (not to mention its location is close to home). We also like that Faith Church is ordinary regular people sharing a love for God in community and fellowship.

WHERE DO YOU SERVE AT FAITH CHURCH? Our family enjoys serving at Faith Church. Jason serves with the Technical Arts Group (TAG) and World Vision Marathon Training group. Rebecca serves in MOPS, Hospitality and Faith Kids, and Josiah serves with the Faith Kids Tech team. We all love that we get to serve on the same Sunday each month!! We Connect to others through serving.

ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT TO SHARE? God has protected us and provided for us in bringing us to a local church with a wonderful children’s ministry that is helping guide us as we raise our family. The Pastoral staff is very accommodating in that Pastor Nathan, while recovering from surgery, came to our house to address any concerns we had prior to our attending a worship service. He is always quick to pray with us about anything on our minds. We love that the pastors are very easy to contact, to serve with, and are fun to be around.

NEW WEBSITE Imagine that you are chatting with your neighbor and they ask you about the current sermon series. Now think about being at work when your cubicle buddy tells you he is interested in getting connected with a mini church. What do you do? You pull out your phone and direct them to the Faith Church website. What better way to reach people in our community and the world than by using our cell phones, tablets, and computers? If you have not seen it yet, go online to wearefaith.org. Much has been going on behind the scenes of Faith Church, and the REACH project made all of these changes and updates possible. These updates are bigger than just being out with the old and in with the new. In order to restore the world one relationship at a time, we, as Christians, need to be constantly aware of how we are representing ourselves as we reflect Jesus. Nurturing relationships takes genuine engagement, and being easily accessible allows us to be available to the community. The simplicity and commu-

nal feel of our new website makes it easier and more convenient to navigate and find the information that you are looking for. Getting connected, learning where and how to serve, and taking those next steps have never been easier. Thanks to the REACH project, Faith Church worked hard to position ourselves to be able to better connect with people, because the first place many go to is the website, not the buildings. Pastor Brian Dennert believes that the new brand and website, “better captures who we are and who we aspire to be. The buildings are not Faith Church, we are Faith Church.” The job is not over yet. Be encouraged to go out and reach those who need a church home or those who need a kind word or a warm hug. Let us not take for granted the convenience and access the Internet has given us to accomplish this task. It’s as simple as pulling out your cell phone or typing a few letters in a search engine.

ONE RELATIONSHIP AT A TIME BY: BEN KAMPMEIER

T

his may sound strange, but as a pastor, I’m probably one of the least qualified people to write an article titled “One Relationship at a Time.” Anyone who works in Christian ministry as a vocation needs to be a highly relational person, but that’s the problem--I spend a lot of time relating to people, so much so, that at times I forget to have relationships. It’s not a problem for just those who work on church staffs either. It’s cliche to say now, but it’s still true that in this day and age where human connectivity is virtually unlimited through a global social media, we “know” more people than ever before; but what we’ve gained in quantity of the relating we can do, we’ve lost in quality of the relationships we can have. What’s the difference between relating to others and having relationships with others? I think the main difference is time. Not just time, but also discipline. To have relationships with others requires a choice, similar to the disciplined choice one has to make to get up for early morning exercise or to do homework. This is why I love our new vision statement at Faith Church, to restore the world one relationship at a time. In that statement is disciplined choice: to really have relationships with others, we must choose to slow down and make time for the hard work of relationship. It’s not enough to “check-in” with a mass of people, ticking names off lists, like wishing a half-dozen people you hardly know “happy birthday” on Facebook every morning. No, we have to be disciplined to take time to have real relationships with others. Jesus says in John 15:13, “greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” One commentator says that we can know who Jesus’ friends are because they “are objects of his love.” This is the Gospel. We have experienced Jesus’ great love for us in his own choice of discipline to go to the Cross and die in our places so that we could be reconciled to God as His friends, to be in relationship with Him! Because of this, Jesus says just one verse earlier, “this is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you” (John 15:12). If we are going to have real relationships, we are to make others the objects of our love in the same manner as Jesus does for us. This means time, investment, and cost to our own personal lives. So how can someone go about this practice? Try putting yourself in the position of disciplined choice. This may mean that everyone at the family dinner table puts away their phones and asks meaningful questions of each other (and that means actually making time for family dinner as well). Maybe instead of leaving right after worship at Faith Church, you might need to start lingering around after the service, even invite someone you often relate to out to lunch so you can build a relationship with them. At the Dyer campus you could join us for Wednesdays where you could come for dinner, join a small group and meet some new people to build relationships. Maybe it’s time to learn your daily Starbucks barista’s name and show up at a slow time to get to know their story. The possibilities are endless; it just requires the disciplined choice to make others the objects of our love.

P

ersonal Discipleship plays a key role in the process of restoring the world one relationship at a time. The Journey is a 22-week course, designed to provide a safe place for a group of 7-10 people to slow down and be intentional on focusing on their relationship with Jesus – personal discipleship. It provides a place where God can meet us, teach us, shape us, bless us, and help us grow. Discipleship helps men and women to discover their unique passion, shape and gifting for ministry and service. Over the past twelve years nearly 250 people at Faith Church have experienced the benefits of growing together in this intentional process of discipleship. Many have been stretched beyond their expectations and are using their gifts and strengths more fully in serving God in a variety of ways that bless others. The Journey requires a high level of commitment Participants are expected to attend a 2-hour weekly group discussion facilitated by a trained leader Preparation for each session requires 4 to 5 hours of reading course materials and meditating on scripture passages. In The Journey we focus on three primary discipleship questions. The first is the question of “Who is God?” Our scripture meditation and discussion ground our knowledge of God in a biblical foundation. We continue growing in that knowledge while we wrestle with the second question, “Who am I?” We look at our personal story through the lens of God’s active work in our lives giving us a personal foundation for our knowledge of God and self. One tool that helps us look at who we are is the “Strengths Finder” assessment. Journey participants process this assessment in a half day workshop as well as in their individual Journey groups. The third question, “What does God desire to do through my life?” allows us to consider what our unique contribution is in the process of “restoring the world one relationship at a time.” As we look at our life experiences, our strengths and our passions, and discuss these things in a safe, life-giving community, we begin to discover the “good works that God has prepared beforehand that we should walk in them” (Eph. 2:10). Alyssa heard about The Journey the first time she visited Faith Church. She shares this: “When I considered taking the Journey I was experiencing a stirring in my soul for a deeper walk with God. I sensed that God had more for me, and as a new church attender, I knew growing in community was missing in my life. The Journey offered an opportunity to grow alongside others--I was constantly challenged to live more authentically. It was amazing to experience a growing friendship with my loving Father while watching my new friends do the same. Seeing God work in the details of our lives was extremely faith building. I came to understand that God has every detail of our past and present in His hands. He works it all out for the good of those who love Him. This gives me peace, comfort, and strength. Our lives are really an amazing adventure as we journey with Christ. We are precious sons and daughters, made in His image, and He has a very specific

purpose for our lives. I am so grateful for the Journey experience and the beautiful friendships I have made along the way. I am absolutely sure I want to continue with the next stage and continue thriving in my walk with God.” Nick has been a part of the Faith Church community for many years. This year he joined the Journey process as one who is, “considered part of the older generation.” Nick says, “The Journey considered 3 questions. Who is God? Who am I? and What Does God desire to do through me? All three were the topics of our year together.” Even after being in the church his whole life, Nick stated, “I have grown in my walk, understanding more clearly all three of these questions. I would highly recommend the Journey to all who want to get a grip on God’s objectives for their life.” Nick gave our group great insight sharing with us ways that God lead him to disciple his children and grandchildren. Discipleship is a process of life-long learning. It was a pleasure to learn alongside one who has walked faithfully with God and who continues to grow. Ronnie, one of our younger participants, was in a group of men and women of varying ages. He commented on how The Journey helped his spiritual growth. “Before I took the journey I would say my faith didn’t have the strongest foundation. There was a good brick frame, but there were pockets of sand here and there throughout the future. After taking the journey, my facilitators (Art and Ann) really challenged me and helped me look back on my journey. This helped me grow not only as a leader but also as a follower of Christ. Looking forward to taking Year 2!” Ronnie said, “My biggest takeaway was sharing my story with the group. Looking back from where I was before I really started following God to where he has bought me now, I was amazed at how God was present when I didn’t realize it. I felt like after doing this exercise it began to break down some barriers with the group.” If you long to grow deeper in your relationship with Jesus, if you hunger for safe and life-giving community, if you want to grow into your calling, restoring the world one relationship at a time, consider The Journey. Journey groups begin at each Faith Church campus in September. Join the hundreds of people from Faith Church who have come to understand God (and themselves) in a new way through The Journey.

To join a Journey group, fill out the Application online, or contact Sharon Vree at svree@wearefaith.org. Course cost of $270.00 can be paid in full online or in three payments of $90.00 (at The Vine) as materials become available.

W

hat does that really mean anyway? Think orange. Let’s unpack it together. Simply put, it’s our church and our homes working together to do everything we can do to have Jesus be the center of everything we do. We want kids and students to love Jesus as He loves them and to glorify God in their lives. We want parents to continue growing in faith modeling what it looks like to love Jesus back through the good and bad times. We believe working together in community is better than working alone. We will get to the color Orange in a bit, but that’s the bottom line--church and families working together to love Jesus back.

THINK ORANGE By: Phil Krygsheld

We can’t do everything just right in ministry, but we can have a strategy. We can’t do everything correctly in our homes either, but if you are like me, you will take all the good help you can get. No church is perfect. No home is perfect. Churches and parents can feel like they are doing everything right and still end up with unwanted results. Honestly, children and young people can feel the same way while enduring the consequences of the choices that parents make too. We must do everything we can do, but then we have to trust that God has a better plan than we do. That is really hard for those of us with control issues. In fact, this trust issue makes life unpredictable and uneasy at times. Welcome to raising a family! We want everyone at Faith Church to know our strategy. This is where the color orange comes into the plan. For those of you challenged like myself in the artistic world, yellow and red mixed together make the color orange. Faith Church represents the color yellow and our homes the color red. The church is yellow to signify the light of Jesus Christ. Everyone who walks into any one of our campuses should see people praising His name and giving Him all the glory. Our homes need to be that place where the love of God is expressed in everyday life. The color red represents that love. So here’s the formula: Yellow = Faith Church shining the light of Jesus Christ Red = Families expressing God’s love in everyday life Restoring the world one relationship at a time often needs to start in our own homes. That’s ok. We are all broken and need Jesus. As long as we have the courage to ask forgiveness, the Lord will change us. In the book of Philippians we are reminded that He who began a good work in us will carry it out until completion. In other words, God never gives up on us or our loved ones! We look forward to serving your family at Faith Church. Together we can restore the world one relationship at a time. Think orange!

FAITH SANTO DOMINGO UPDATE

T

here is great excitement generated by the arrival of new people to our fellowship. We have four small groups growing strong and fully engaged. Approximately 25 new believers are showing up to these gatherings. New believers are bringing their friends and family members to the small groups and to the church. Our goal is to baptize 12 or more new believers by mid-September 2016. Baptism classes will start in July. Faith Church Santo Domingo just completed a cycle of Saturday children’s programming at a local public school, and we are serving and ministering to more than 45 kids. Approximately 10 families have visited us as a result of this new work and we continue to follow up with them. We will resume our Saturday programming (teaching English, dance and drawing) this fall. Early this fall, we will initiate an aggressive discipleship program designed to better equip future leaders who will in turn start and lead their own small group. They will be intentional about recruiting new disciples from their respective groups so that they may also go through the School of Discipleship. In the power of the Spirit we will spearhead this new discipleship program starting with 10 believers, and they will graduate and be ready to lead a small group by January 2017. Our dream with all of this preparation is to better position us to have a more robust launch this fall, to help with strengthening our numbers, and to equip a pastoral care team that will better attend to the needs of our existing disciples and new believers that the Lord of the harvest continues to bring out to us. So, continue to pray fervently for us as we continue to pursue our mission: “reaching the disconnected, and growing the connected!” Also pray for the opening of the School of Discipleship this fall, for the launching of six strong small groups by January 2017, and for the Lord to provide a new meeting place at a centrally-located plaza as we prepare for a “Hard Launch” this fall. We thank God for Faith Church’s generosity, Kingdom-mindedness and partnership in the gospel!
