Whether you’ve been attending Faith Church for a long time or you are a first time visitor, THE PAPER is here to help! Being a part of this church family is a partnership in growth, so we encourage you to be involved in 3 ways:

1 | WORSHIP ON THE WEEKENDS Gather with others to listen to a message from God’s Word, sing, pray and lift up the name of Jesus. Attend a service at one of our campuses. Faith Kids (infants5th grade) is a safe place where kids can worship Jesus at their level. Don’t miss the opportunity to gather with others and worship each week. Invite a friend.

2 | CONNECT IN COMMUNITY Being a follower of Jesus was never meant to be done alone. Sole-ranger Christianity usually means discouragement and failure. God has provided a better way- Biblical community. Community keeps us encouraged, helps us build meaningful friendships, and most importantly, helps us grow as Christians. This can be through a Mini-Church, Bible Study or Serving Team. No matter what your age, God does not intend for you to walk through life alone. Be real. Be known.

3 | SERVE OTHERS Join a weekend Serving Team at one of our campuses, serve in your neighborhood or around the world! God has gifted each of us to do something special. Discover the joy of serving.

WHAT ARE YOUR NAMES? Carlos, Jill, Julia, Joze, Jeorgia, Jaid and Jenevieve Garcia.

WHERE ARE YOU FROM? We live in Hammond.

HOW DID YOU GET CONNECTED TO FAITH CHURCH? When Faith Church worshiped at Kenwood Elementary school, we would always see lots of cars but did not realize people were coming for church. I actually thought there were auctions going on until one Sunday when I heard music coming from a tent outside the school. I quickly found myself singing along to the familiar music. The following Sunday we decided to see what was really going on across the street. We found Faith Church and have been going there ever since.

WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN GOD DO AT FAITH CHURCH? We are seeing God’s footprint all over in Hammond. We have seen connections with people in our community through classes at the HAC, community events and in the schools that Faith has been apart of.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT THE WORSHIP SERVICES? We enjoy the intimate casual atmosphere, the music and the sermons.

WHERE DO YOU SERVE AT FAITH CHURCH? I have been blessed to serve ladies and kids by teaching the DIY classes at the HAC.

HOW DO YOU CONNECT WITH OTHERS AT YOUR CAMPUS? By being involved in the art classes at the HAC, I feel we’ve connected with people from our church and the community.

WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN GOD DO IN YOUR LIFE? We have been truly blessed with our family, friends, work and health. God has shown us how to put our faith in him, and he continually reminds us that his plans for us are far better than anything we could have without him in our life.

BY: Marilyn Miller REACHing to Brazil Living in a remote village far from the comforts of home, Anna has shared the love of Jesus along the Amazon River for several years. God has given her a love for the people of this region and equipped her to serve them. Many of these groups are still considered unreached people groups. In her years of service, Anna has seen countless young people who are desperate to better themselves, to find a trade and gainful employment. But training, education and opportunity have not been accessible to this generation, so many have turned to crime and drugs. For years Anna hoped for a way to reach these young people–a way to bring skills and opportunities to them. That dream seemed unreachable. But this woman of faith prayed for years, and now God has answered her prayer and blessed this region with exactly what this godly woman envisioned. A large church in Manaus, Brazil, “IPM” (which is the Portuguese name for “First Presbyterian Church”) adopted Anna’s dream as its own. Committed to church planting along the northern Amazon, this church saw a training center as a very practical way to share the love of Jesus by providing opportunities for education and skills development. They planned and set things in motion for constructing a building to achieve this goal. But they needed financial help. In God’s providence, they were connected with you, Faith Church.

The Back Story Always looking for ministry opportunities, Faith Church leadership became interested after Missions Director, Corrie Vos, connected them to this project. “We’re all about church planting and reproduction,” says Senior Pastor Bob Bouwer, “and this was worth investigating.”

A Faith team traveled to Brazil in 2015 and was surprised by what it found. “We were so impressed with the church-planting success of the church in Manaus,” says Pastor Bob. “We realized we’d be ‘re-inventing the wheel’ to begin a similar outreach.” The region’s educational challenges gripped their hearts, and the team returned to Indiana with a passion to provide the opportunities described by IPM. Combining learning opportunities with presenting the gospel provided a great long-term outlet for Faith Church to extend its ministry in Brazil. The flight to Brazil is about 10 hours. But the fun really begins with the 8-hour plus boat ride up the Amazon River to the village of Itapeacu, the location of the educational building. From the REACH project, $70,000 was allocated to help provide this facility. It is a 10,000-square foot building, built to serve the thousands of young people growing up in tribal villages along the northern Amazon River in Brazil. “When Anna saw the building, she was thrilled,” remembers Pastor Bob. “Her smile was worth the miles we had traveled.”

“Her smile was worth the miles we had traveled.” Josh Roeda traveled with Pastor Bob. His role was to provide video footage of the project. “This school will provide so much opportunity to the people of this region,” remembers Josh. “At the dedication service, I watched the faces of the local people as they heard what this facility will mean to their children and grandchildren. I was proud to be connected with the REACH project and the people of Faith Church.”

What’s next? Beginning in 2017, Pastor Bob anticipates Faith Church

6

sending two teams each year to help with the educational facility. You’ll have the opportunity to join teams to lead Vacation Bible School or teach a critical skill. We’ll need doctors, nurses, teachers, engineers and other skilled workers. IPM will provide guidance and translation support. “I stood across the street from the building and was overwhelmed with pride, a good pride in seeing what the people of Faith Church had provided,” says Pastor Bob. “It was a spiritual boasting in the Lord. I’m proud of Faith Church, that you are willing to give to people outside of our community and our country. I saw young men on the streets who will have an opportunity for jobs and purpose because of your gifts.” “We are such a blessed nation,” says Pastor Bob. “We have an abundance of churches in the US and in our area. It is a great feeling to know we provided “hope” for this region – hope for a future and hope for eternity.” “I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” Philippians 1:3-6.

“It is exciting to see the international partnership deeloping between two large churches, IPM in Manaus, Brazil, and Faith Church. Both congregations share a passion for multiplication and canlearn from oneanother.” Corrie Vos | Missions Director

hat a wonderful year we had at Faith Church in 2016 -- we have much to be thankful for! We experienced growth as a church (being on Outreach magazine’s list of fastest growing churches this summer) and had over 200 new members (including 73 first-time professions of faith), 17 adult/youth baptisms, and 70 infant/child baptisms. With the installation of elders and deacons at our Schererville campus, we now have elders and deacons at every campus. Big events like the Gobbler Classic, the Leadership Summit, and Behold the Wonder were wonderful events that helped reach into the community. New groups and ministries continue to pop up at our various campuses -- too many to name in a short report like this. Our weekly worship services continue to inspire and transform lives as we looked at a wide variety of topics from the Scriptures, including the power of our words, God’s sovereignty in this world and our lives, biblical sexuality, the heart of generosity, and prayer. We started the year with the “Reset” series, had a chance to hear about the new vision of restoring the world one relationship at a time, dialogued Bible passages with popular songs in the “Spin” series, studied the book of Jonah, and finished with “Christmas Re-imagined.” I would encourage you to look back over this past year and see how God grew you through these sermons series.

Because of the Reach Project, we saw our Cedar Lake campus finally get a place to call home -- and we are seeing how this building is already being used by God! The Reach Project also helped launch Faith Santo Domingo and construct a vocational school in Brazil. Thank you for your generosity in giving to the Reach Project and to the General Fund as well as giving of your time and talents to Faith Church, as it is through the giving of your time, talent, and treasures that we are able to see ministries happen. It is our prayer that ministry will continue to expand in 2017, and we have sought to budget accordingly. Therefore, we have set an overall budget at $6.99 million for 2017, a modest 3.5% increase. Our staff and deacons closely monitor our spending and budget as we seek to be good stewards of what God entrusts us with. Each campus has a giving goal as part of this budget for the church. These goals help provide for that campus’ ministry as well as help support ministries we do together as one church, work happening at other campuses, and our mission partners. They will stretch us, so please pray for God’s provision throughout this year for Faith Church, that God would provide and use these funds to do great things for his glory.

GROWING IN

PRAYER B Y : M A R I A NNE EENI GENB URG

rayer is amazing! Prayer is amazing because God is amazing! And God answers prayers in amazing ways! As a child, I learned how to pray from my parents. I also learned from example at church and school. I grew up with the habit of praying before meals and praying at bedtime. As a parent, I taught these patterns to my children when they were in the home. Prayer is simple enough for a child to do. But prayer is difficult enough that, as an adult, I can struggle with it. I realize that I need to continue to grow in prayer. One way that I have grown in prayer in recent years was by joining the prayer team at Faith Church. I listened and watched as others prayed. After a while, I ventured to offer some prayers on another’s behalf. I was comfortable praying silently, privately, but to pray aloud with someone was a difficult step for me. I had to learn this. But God continued to stretch me and grow me in areas of prayer. In addition, I have grown in prayer this past year by joining a prayer group at the Dyer campus. This group meets every Monday morning at 11 a.m. and prays for about two hours. The group’s focus is to pray for Faith Church, the pastors and leaders, the congregation, and each other. Praying regularly in a group binds people together in amazing ways. It builds friendships. Praying in a group also helps me to realize that we are all just ordinary people praying to an extraordinary God who loves to come close, listen to our requests, praises, and worship, and loves to answer our prayers. I also continue to grow in prayer by attending Pastor Charlie’s prayer workshops. Pastor Charlie is the Pastor of Spiritual Formation at Faith Church and leader of the Faith Church prayer team. He regularly offers prayer workshops throughout the year that are open to anyone in the congregation who is interested in learning about prayer. Pastor Charlie gives instruction on various aspects of prayer and opportunities to participate in or just to observe prayer. These workshops always help me to grow deeper and broader in areas of prayer. If growing in prayer is something God is putting on your heart, why not consider coming to Pastor Charlie’s next prayer workshop on Saturday, March 4, 2017, from 8:30-11:30 am at the Dyer Campus in rooms 146/147. Come and learn, ask questions, observe, and even put it into action. It is wonderful to gather with other people who are excited to grow deeper in prayer.

FAITH SANTO DOMINGO UPDATE BY: DAVID MOJICA BLESSED CHRISTMAS! We are excited about the four new believers who were baptized this weekend! Each and every one of the folks who was baptized was a true testament of God’s power and grace working in and through them. Some who were living in common-law marriages were convicted by the Holy Spirit to get their lives right with God and scrambled in the last two weeks to gain a spot to get married in civil court. Although these candidates to baptism were being discipled for the past three months, we took a leap of faith with them believing that God was at work in their lives and that they would get married in time for baptism. Another 10 people are signed up for New Believers’ Class and should be baptized before Easter. Our campus continues to experience both spiritual and numerical growth as the Lord continues to add to our fellowship. We are blessed by the start of training sessions for those who will lead small groups. About eight people are part of these sessions. The existing small group gatherings are growing strong and we will be recruiting people from among the groups to be trained as leaders. To keep up with the demands to open up new small groups, we have set a goal for 2017 to train 12 small group leaders and to launch 12 small groups. Our Faith Kids ministry is also solid, but we need more volunteers to make a greater impact. We are currently engaged in a local public school in

a community where we would eventually like to relocate our campus to. In light of this possible move, we took a step of faith and approached the leadership of a public school in this community to run an arts program out of their school. The leadership was thrilled by this idea, and we are currently running a 40-voice choir, a dance group, and we also share Jesus with 4th and 5th graders on a weekly basis. We hope to extend our reach to all primary grades in the first half of 2017. In fact, on December 15, we will hold a musical/dance performance with the kids involved in our program. Our hope is to reach out to the parents of these kids and to begin building relationships with them but to also invite them to our fellowship. There are over 600 kids at this school, but we are working with approximately 150 until we can get more volunteers to help. We cannot hold worship services at the school auditorium on a permanent basis, but doors are open to hold services periodically. In the name of the Lord we will lead an outreach gospel event at the school on three consecutive Sundays: January 15, 22, and 29. Pray for God to be glorified and for people to come to Christ. With your continued prayers and financial support, FC Santo Domingo will be able to rent space in close proximity to the school as we seek to make greater kingdom impact in this bustling community. Our prayer is to move from where we are at to a commercial space by mid January or early February 2017! This potential 120+ seating space is located in a commercial plaza in the “heart of the city” and has great parking, security and electric power amenities. We trust God for breakthroughs and for favor! Bendiciones en Cristo Jesús desde Santo Domingo, ¡Feliz Navidad Y Prospero Año 2017!
