R E S TO R I N G A N D TRANSFORMING THE WORLD ONE RELATIONSHIP AT A TIME
Faith Church believes all followers of Christ are called to a higher purpose - that as “salt and light we have been called to make a difference in the world. We should be actively engaged in building relationships inside and outside of the church-deeper relationships with God and other Faith Church members certainly, but also with co-workers, neighbors and friends outside the church community. In these relationships, we display and share the transforming love of Jesus Christ.
FAITH FAMILY HIG H L I G H T PHILIP & PAM MEUZELAAR Philip and Pam have been married 44 years and have four children and six grandchildren. Pam grew up in South Holland. Phil’s father was a minister so he moved around the United States quite a bit. When Phil was 12 years old, his hips dislocated and he had to have surgery to pin his hips in place. He spent six weeks in the hospital. He was released by the doctors 18 months later with the opinion he should do what he wanted because it wouldn’t be long before he couldn’t do much and he should just enjoy the time he was able to be active. He has lived in pain ever since but it never stopped him from doing as much as he could. Phil moved from Kansas to Chicago after high school to attend DeVry Institute of Technology. After graduation and working for a year or so, he decided to attend Reformed Bible College (now Kuyper College) in Grand Rapids. That is where Phil and Pam met and married.
4
In 1981, the pain had become unbearable for Phil. He went to an orthopedic doctor who told them it appeared one of the pins had been placed into the joint too far and had destroyed the cartilage. Phil was too young to have a hip replacement so it was suggested the pins be removed in the hope of relieving some of the pain. It took two surgeries to accomplish this and it did relieve some of the pain but now he had to walk with a cane. Two years later, the pain was again unbearable so the Meuzelaars went to the University of Chicago for a consultation. They had just received permission to do a glue-less hip replacement, which in theory would last much longer than the early hip replacements where glue was used. With great hope, he had the surgery done and went through six months of recovery. But he was still in pain and no one had any answer for why that was so. The following year, the surgery was performed again, only to discover the replacement had not had any bone growth and was loose. It was revised and he had another six months of recovery. These were hard years for the family. Not only was Phil in a lot of pain and unable to work, but the family had two young boys who wanted a dad who could be active with them. God was faithful, however, and they were provided for in so many ways. The second surgery was somewhat successful but he still had some pain. As the years passed, the Meuzelaars added another son and daughter to their family. In 1992, Phil had the other hip replaced. Six more months of recovery and no work now with four children. Again, God provided and Phil was eventually able to return to work. Over 20 years after the first replacement, Phil needed another revision in the first hip. This meant more time off of work and more time to see God providing for the family. Around this time, Phil began having other symptoms, such as a loss of balance and neuropathy pain. This started after several years of trying to figure out what was wrong. While Phil still didn’t have a specific diagnosis, the doctors suspected a rare neurological disorder, which led to him needing the use of a power wheelchair, going on disability and eventually, needing to have a ventilator because he cannot always breath on his own. After Phil’s tracheostomy, he was told he might not talk again and that really frightened Pam. Anyone who knows Phil knows he is a talker and Pam, along with family and close
friends, couldn’t imagine not being able to talk backand-forth with Phil. God was gracious as Phil has been able to talk. When the tracheostomy was done in 2005, the doctors thought he only had a few years to live. But here we are nearly 14 years later and Phil is still doing much of what he would like to do. Phil and Pam can’t travel as they would like to but their lives are still full. They learned to never underestimate God’s plans for our life. Along the way, Phil was given a lot of pain medication, including a lot of narcotics to help him live with his pain but he eventually became addicted to it. Since no one expected him to live as long as he has, it wasn’t seen as a problem. Since God has proved them wrong, with the help of his neurologist he was weaned off the narcotics. He has experienced an increase in energy since then. About seven years ago, Pam was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, which is a life-limiting disease for which there is no treatment. Learning this was a real blow emotionally, but again through the grace of God, she is still here and able to do much of what she wants to do. Phil & Pam love Faith Church. Pam volunteers for First Time Families twice a month and the Welcome Center once a month. Phil attends the Wednesday Morning Men’s Bible Study and even leads it about once a month. Together, they love attending Overcomers but most of all, they love the months when Phil is able to be in church. Pam calls him Faith’s mobile welcome team. He looks for people who look like they might be new to Faith and helps them find how to get their children registered for Faith Kids or Reflectors, takes them to the Welcome Center or even helps them find their way to the worship center. While it hasn’t been easy and there aren’t clear answers as to why this is the path God chose for them, the Meuzelaars don’t see their lives as limited but as means that God uses people for His glory. He has been with Phil and Pam and their kids every step of the way: providing friends and family who lift them up in prayer: provided care and help for the children when they were young; help with trips to the doctors; and so much more. First Corinthians 10:31 says, “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” 5

Jesus said, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me.” John 14:1 To say our hearts are troubled is an understatement for most Hurting Moms. It is our hearts that are so deeply affected when we have children who are making choices that have the potential to destroy them. In this verse, Jesus himself reminds us we can do something about the pain we have. He tells us to trust Him. The more completely we trust Him the less our hearts will be troubled. Focus on trusting Jesus with your child today and experience the relief only He can give. Join a Hurting Moms Group and be with moms who understand your story

Day and evening groups available. Childcare is provided. Visit MomsNation.org for locations, meeting days/times and theme info. We hope to see you soon at an upcoming meeting or special event!
Beginning January 13, Faith Church will be joining over 500+ churches in the Chicagoland area for the Explore God Initiative. Why Explore God? Studies show over 4,000 churches in America permanently close their doors every year. Studies also show 73 percent of Christians believe they have the responsibility to share their faith, yet 48 percent have never shared it with anyone. It is reported 43 million Americans suffer from loneliness and Christians are unsure how to engage in meaningful conversations about God with people who believe differently. Explore God is a very unique effort to come together throughout the Chicagoland area to tackle these critical issues by preaching a 7-week sermon series and mobilizing our Faith Church congregation to form Explore God discussion groups in our local communities. Faith Church wants EVERYONE to participate. We first ask you to pray. Pray how the Lord would use you in this 7-week initiative. Be one of the many people to be part of reaching out to those who are far from God and help us turn the tide of the American Church. As you pray, ask the Lord to lead you in how you can participate.
Is it a call to:
Invite - We want everyone to invite others far from God to join us at one of our Faith Church campuses to engage in the sermon series, The 7 Big Questions.
1. Does Life Have a Purpose? 2. Is There A God? 3. Why Does God Allow Suffering? 4. Is Christianity Too Narrow? 5. Is Jesus Really God? 6. Is the Bible Reliable? 7. Can I Know God Personally?
Gather - We want people to gather and
facilitate discussion groups to watch videos and talk through the 7 Big Questions with people who have questions about God and faith. A group can be made up of any number of people. There are five short training videos to watch online to help you prepare. It is important to remember these are discussion groups not “I have to have all the answers” groups.
Pray - This is a powerful initiative and we want everyone praying - Praying for the 500+ participating churches, the sermon series, the discussion groups and people who are far from God that need to know Him personally. We have a weekly prayer that will be sent your way via email or you can text PRAY to (650) 250-5822 to opt in.
We know the Lord will do great things in the Chicagoland area through Explore God. We don’t want you to miss this opportunity to join us in living into our Faith Church vision of transforming the world ONE RELATIONSHIP at a time. To register and learn more about Explore God, visit WeAreFaith.org/ExploreGod. 9

IT’S OKAY TO NOT BE OKAY BY VINNIE ADAMS
It was autumn of 2011, and the effects of anxiety and depression were closing in on me like they never had before. Joylessness. Crippling worry. Despair. Darkness. As God would have it, I was asked to sing for a wedding at Faith Dyer during this season. Pastor Bob was officiating, and he asked me about getting breakfast before the ceremony to share about some conversations and thoughts he was having about a special needs ministry. Though I wasn’t part of Faith at the time, he approached me very personally and pastorally. While the impact of the conversation could have easily been centered around this new special needs ministry idea, it wasn’t - Bob could see I was struggling and he asked me three questions that changed my life. How are you doing medically? Have you talked to your doctor? Have you talked to a counselor or professional? How are you doing physically? Are you exercising? How’s your diet? How are your sleeping habits? How are you doing spiritually? Are you staying close to the Lord in the highs and the lows? Do you have brothers in Christ who are encouraging and supporting you regularly? You see, when I opened myself up to a pastor, I would’ve expected him to pull out a Bible and whack me over the head with it. Instead, I was met with a gentle, holistic, more-Christ-centered approach to my mental health battles. Fast forward seven years (to today). Do I still have days filled with darkness? Yes.
Is joy still a decision that is sometimes difficult to make? Yes. Has my depression gone away completely? No (I wish). Do I still need check-in times with these three questions? Every week. Through it all, though, am I better than I was? Yes. Our Fresh Hope Mental Health Ministry has the mission statement of empowering individuals to “live well in spite of a mental health diagnosis.” For some of us, struggles are seasonal (up and down, here and there). For others (like me and many others I know), it’s a medically & physiologically chronic condition. But for all of us, it is possible to live well in spite of the struggles. Another turning point in my journey was hearing a pastor vulnerably share at a conference about his own depression. His exhortation was, “It’s OKAY to not be OKAY. But it’s not OKAY to stay that way.” I pass this along as two separate words of encouragement to you. First, if you find yourself struggling, it’s OKAY. Just as you are, you are loved, you are valued, you are not a failure and you are not alone in your struggles. Hear these words, “It’s OKAY.” Secondly, I’d ask you the same questions Pastor Bob asked me seven years ago: How are you doing medically? How are you doing physically? How are you doing spiritually? Do not let the answers to these questions overwhelm you nor lead you to despair, but start with one thing and do not journey alone. There is hope, friend.

CORRIE VOS MISSIONS DIRECTOR
Faith Church as a ministry is over 50 years old. For every one of those 50+ years, Faith Church has been passionate about missions, using its time, talent and resources to impact the community, region and world around us. One of the greatest challenges has been building strategy around the efforts our church has made and will continue to make into the future through our mission endeavors. About a year ago, our missions team began working with a consultant. Over the course of several months, we met multiple times and talked as a team, celebrating the work we have been able to be a part of because of the generosity of our people. Through these conversations, we recognized we needed to redefine our strategy and focus deeper in perhaps fewer areas in order to have a greater impact in this next season. We are excited and encouraged by the legacy that has gone before us, and how we can build upon it in the coming years. As a result of our work, our team recognized three key areas: Mobilize - We desire to, “mobilize people and resources to restore the world.” We realize unlike most other ministries here at Faith Church, most of our work has to do with what happens outside of the actual church building or Faith community. We want to be a church body known for stepping out of our comfort zone into our neighborhoods, both locally and globally, utilizing our resources (time, talent, treasure) to share the hope of the gospel.
MISSIONS UPDATE Partnerships - We value partnerships “with like-minded, vibrant, evangelical churches and organizations in targeted communities around the world who pursue gospel-centered, holistic (physical, emotional, spiritual) ministry that equips and develops indigenous leaders to reach their community.” Target Areas - We still hold true to the strategy we’ve been utilizing for the past several years to work through community development, leadership development and reaching unreached peoples. The shift now is instead of doing these things in scattered areas around the world, we hope to do so in specific, targeted areas around the world. Over the next year, the missions team is looking to develop impact groups around each of our strategic focus areas to help us continue to develop strong partnerships and relationships with those we partner with financially. We also hope to have better opportunities to get involved in our community and world through serving and short-term mission trips. We are excited for the journey ahead! We hope you will continue to partner with us. Each year Faith gives roughly 10 percent of your giving through tithes and offerings towards Missions. Our team is excited about the opportunity to think more strategically about where that giving goes, and how people are involved in our community and world. We hope you will continue to partner with us through giving and serving!

WORDS but nothing simple about it
What am I really doing? Has church become routine for me? Does God expect more from me than showing up once a week? Am I settling for “just enough Jesus?”
an interview with Pastor Brian Dennert
Have you ever found yourself asking these kinds of questions? We all have those “wonders” – self-checking our motivation for involvement. Discipleship means to be a follower, specifically being “followers of Jesus.”
GATHERING IS GOOD, GOD AFFIRMS IT! When we come together, God promises to show up! When was the last time you thought about that when you sat in church or in a living room with your small group? God is there! Are you prepared for that?! Does it change your speech and behavior? God, the creator of the universe, is there with you!
written by Marilyn Miller
“For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.” - Matthew 18:20 14
Author David Benner says,
“The myth of a solitary Christian making his or her own way flies in the face of everything the Bible teaches about the body of Christ.” (referring to I Cor. 12:12-31) When we are together worshipping, serving and learning together - things happen which cannot happen in isolation. • Our integrity is checked. We let others see if our words and actions match up. • We help each other. Maybe you are the one person who can help another person because of what you’ve been through. If you’re not there, who will be the “one” for them? • We inspire each other. We challenge each other to grow closer to Jesus. • Transformation can take place when we let ourselves be influenced by God’s Word, His Spirit and His people.
GOD WANTS YOU TO GROW Our nature is to grow. As children, we play about doing “grown-up jobs” like astronauts and doctors. As teenagers, we crave to be treated like grownups and as adults we know we have “grown-up” responsibilities and opportunities. But we can easily overlook the “growing up” of our spiritual lives. Has your prayer life matured in the past five years? Do we see God as an omnipotent Santa who can grant wishes and make our dreams come true? I think we can all be guilty of this type of prayer at times but have we moved beyond it to a praying <–> listening as well as speaking <–> relationship prayer?
“But practicing the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into Christ.” - Ephesians 4:15 Are you engaging with Scripture daily? The Four Year Bible Reading Plan is a great tool. It’s so easy to just count on those “Sunday School verses.” Don’t misunderstand – there’s nothing wrong with them and in difficult times we are thankful for those reminders. But we need more. What are you chewing on from the Word that is fresh for you today? Are you communicating with God daily? Can a relationship be vital with just once-a-week contact? Look back at your life as a Christ follower. What is different today from 20 years ago, 10 or even 5. If you can’t see marked change, what’s missing? And what can you do today to make a change?
GIVING YOUR TIME, TALENT AND TREASURES
The word “give” makes us think about money. While God wants the best of all we have, our tithe is only part of what He wants from us. Are you stingy with your time? All of us have it, the same 1,440 minutes in every day. Let’s take off the 440 for sleeping and what are we doing with the rest? Is your family a priority? How about ministry? Are we using these gifts of minutes (like the ones I spent today on mindless tv) for our own development or the development of others? My small group is using the Prayer of Examen – taking time at the end of the day to notice what gave life and what took life. I’d be hard pressed to ever mention a tv show which “gave me life.” What about your talents. Are we using them for someone other than ourselves?
THEN GO We get caught up in so many peripheral things and activities, even around the church. We focus on issues, which at the moment seem so important (politics can be that for me), and yet what is the eternal value of that time and energy spent? We are commanded to “Go and make disciples” (Matthew 28:19). It’s not a request or even a suggestion. As Jesus showed, it’s not a quick process and it cannot be done in isolation. Where do we go? Into our neighborhood, our workplace, to our family? God has given each of us a community. How are we going into that place with His love? The Mitchell family, part of Faith Munster, has figured out some things about “going.” They have been reaching into their neighborhood for some time. In a conversation with Breanne she stated, “At first, we invited everyone to church. But over time, we learned the best way to share Christ’s love with our neighbors is to drop our agenda and practice the second greatest commandment - love your neighbor as yourself. In doing so, we have seen doors open, conversations begin and growth taking place in the lives of our neighbors. In just enjoying relationships with our neighbors, God has moved in ways we never expected.”
4GS
Four simple words – GATHER, GROW, GIVE & GO. Yet there is nothing simple about either the process or the results. For me, the Journey groups offered by Faith Church have provided a great opportunity for me to gather, grow, give and go. What about you? Where have you been discipled and challenged to become more of a Christ follower than ever before? If God is nudging you, where can you begin to invest your time in things which will last?

BEECHER PASTOR’S NOTE If you’re reading this publication, you must be curious about the life and culture of Faith Church - who we are, what we believe, and how we are involved and on mission in our community. Since opening the Beecher Campus in 2012, our Gospel focus has been reaching the 20,000 people who live in the rural communities of Beecher, Grant Park and Peotone. We are incredibly grateful to God for the sincere, deepening relationships within our church family, but most notably, those outside our walls - with the public schools and local government officials in our area. If you are looking for a church family that is active in the community (even if you live outside our focus area!), we would be honored to have you at one of our Sunday morning services - 9 & 11 AM - and welcome you into the ebb and flow of weekday ministry. Come as you are and we’ll learn together about the truth, love and grace of Jesus Christ - through biblical teaching and real-life application as we serve God and others throughout the week. We hope you’ll join us! Pastor Nathan Prairie

CEDAR LAKE PASTOR’S NOTE Welcome to Faith Church. I am excited you are here! It is our hope as you join us on the journey through life, you find places of deep connection with Jesus and others in this community. It has personally been life giving for me to be a part of the Faith Church family for the last 20 years. My wife, Karla, and I and our four kids are living proof that ordinary, imperfect people can belong in this community of believers. If you have some “baggage” in your past, are dealing with some issues or even just trying to figure out your next steps in life, Faith Church welcomes you! As we get to know each other, it is our desire the relationships that are formed are meaningful and caring. There are many ways to connect through small groups and serving, and we would be glad to assist you in any way we can. I look forward to meeting you! If you would like to contact me, please email me at dweemhoff@WeAreFaith.org. Pastor Dave Weemhoff

DYER PASTOR’S NOTE When I started serving Faith over 25 years ago, we were a family of six. My wife Laurie, our four children and their spouses, and grandchildren now number 16. In comparison, Faith Church has grown from one church with 250 people to now having six sites with thousands of wonderful people. God is a God of fruitfulness and reproduction. Laurie and I have found joy in every season of life. We are currently “empty nesters” which allows us to cherish our loving grandchildren in all their wonder. This season also provides unique opportunities for us to serve God’s world in its beauty and in its gospel impact. God is moving in mighty ways at Faith Church and I am excited to see where He will lead! Pastor Bob Bouwer

HIGHLAND PASTOR’S NOTE Welcome to Faith Highland! I am so glad that you are taking the time to read this! I just want to let you know who we are. We are a church that believes Jesus is the only way for us to be restored in our relationship with God. When we gather, we want to praise him for who he is and we want to learn more about him so our relationship can grow. When we scatter and leave our building we want to serve him and share him with whoever we have relationship with. Do we get it right all the time? Nope. Do we ever mess it up? Definitely. But it doesn’t stop us from trying. We’d love to build a relationship with you and have you be a part of our community at Faith Highland. Please let us know how we can help! Pastor Jason DeVries

We’ve served at churches on the East Coast (Pennsylvania) and in the Southeast (Florida), but it’s great to be back home where our roots are here in the Midwest region. Throughout our ministry, we’ve had a passion for living a missional lifestyle through relationships, and so it’s been awesome to see how well we’ve fit with Faith Church’s belief in “restoring the world one relationship at a time.” If you’re the type of person who’s felt “hurt by the church” or “burned by the church;” or if you’ve just been “wondering about this whole God thing,” we promise you’ll find a diverse community of people who love to walk together in relationship. And we do so recognizing that we’re an imperfect people trying to follow a perfect God. We love our campus, and we invite you to come join us at 10 AM at Campagna Academy. Come see how we’re growing people deep in their walk with Jesus and wide in their witness to the world. I’m looking forward to meeting you soon! Pastor Aaron Klein
