DEAR FAITH CHURCH FAMILY & FRIENDS
As I write this letter to you, I’m participating in a 40 day prayer challenge with other members of Faith Church staff. As part of the author’s directive in the book we are reading, he states, “The true purpose of prayer is to get into God’s presence so He can outline His agenda for us….God will reveal a promise, a problem or a person.” In my letter to you in the fall edition of The Paper, I shared that I see God pruning His Church. The Bible speaks about “lukewarm” and “lazy” Christians falling away. Pruning is a wonderful way to make a plant healthier and I think God is doing this in His Church.
The answer to our worries has been and will always be - God. My ask is for Him to stir a revival in your heart - in the hearts of each member and attender of Faith Church. A revival works much like a wildfire - God stirs in one heart, 10 hearts, 100 hearts, an entire congregation of hearts. It goes from a person, to a church, to a city, to a nation. A Christian revival. My prayer is for God to come alive in each of you. May Satan be cast out, so God can be glorified even more in your life. Let’s live lives like Paul and the disciples, where others want to know where our joy, energy, love and peace comes from - so that we may show the world the way to Christ.
The current prayer I see God drawing me to is revival; by definition it is an instance of something becoming popular, active or important again. As the Church is being pruned, may it stir in His followers a revival. To be AWAKENED to live a life for Christ. In the fresh stage of COVID, we were shaky, uncertain and full of unrest. We didn’t have hard facts or known knowledge of how to deal with an unknown virus that led to quarantine; mask wearing; social distancing; and the cancellation of church services, events, vacations, school, etc. Even now as we continue to navigate an unknown COVID future and continue to see racial injustice in our country, and as we look to direction from a new presidential cabinet, we are seeking to find something tangible to ease our anxiousness and worries.

FAITH
FA M I LY H I G H L I G H T THE WIATER FAMILY WHAT ARE YOUR NAMES? Brian, Stephanie & Mason Wiater WHERE ARE YOU FROM? Grant Park, Illinois HOW DID YOU FIRST GET CONNECTED TO FAITH CHURCH? We were encouraged to attend by friends who told us our journey would be life-changing. We began attending Faith Church in June of 2012 and were excited to learn about the Beecher campus. As soon as we arrived at Faith Beecher, we knew we were home. Our friends were right, our experience has been life-changing. Over the years, the three of us have attended groups geared towards our needs. WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN GOD DO AT FAITH CHURCH? We’ve seen Him change lives. We’ve seen Him restore relationships and we’ve seen Him provide. God has shown up in such big ways not only for our family and church but for our community. Two things stand out to us: seeing our son, Mason, accept Christ; and the continued provisions for our mobile food pantry that blesses those in our community. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT THE WORSHIP SERVICES? The sense of home, the love we feel when we walk into the church is beyond compare. After being away from in-person church, due to quarantine, being with others as a body of Christ and lifting our voices in praise is just what we needed. It never fails that God speaks to us during these moments.
4
WHERE DO YOU SERVE AT FAITH CHURCH? We began serving with Faith Family Market when it launched in Beecher. As it transitioned, we did too. As a family, we serve each month during the mobile food pantry. Mason also serves on the Technical Arts Team and Stephanie recently joined the Photography Team. HOW DO YOU CONNECT WITH OTHERS AT YOUR CAMPUS? Small groups and just living life together. WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN GOD DO IN YOUR LIFE? He brought us together more as a family. We love being able to serve our community together and through outreach ministries at Faith, we’ve been able to do so. ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT TO SHARE? Don’t ever think God cannot use you. We are all broken people in need of a Savior and He will use you for His glory.
HO & THE
ME
Have you ever wondered why our Faith Kids staff & volunteers wear orange? While we wear the color well, more importantly, we believe in the importance of the church (yellow) partnering with the home (red) to help children desire an authentic faith of their own!
In Faith Kids we seek to cultivate an environment for children to be seen and known, growing in relationship with God. We also recognize that it can take more than one hour each week for children to be in true discipleship. Some of the ways we champion the church & home partnership is through: • our Monthly Faith Kids Newsletter (subscribe at wearefaith.org/kids); • the Parent CUE App (theparentcue.org); • Just-a-Phase resources (Justaphase.com); • and engaging weekly on social media through family challenges, videos and articles to assist parents in their discipleship at home. (Facebook @faithkidsworship; Studio252.tv kids videos resources; WeAreFaith.org/kids; Parentcue.org) You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. - Deuteronomy 6:5-7,9 Our desire is to walk alongside parents, grandparents, influencers in any child’s life to help do just that. May we be the ambassadors of Christ He calls us to be to the little (or not so little) ones God has placed in our lives. God never intends for us to do it on our own. Orange you glad to have us as a partner! Your Faith Kids Leaders

RHYTHMS: THE WAY OF JESUS By Andy Schultz Worship Leader | Highland Worship Development | Central Have you ever been in a conversation and something questionable slips out of your mouth? Regret is immediate. Maybe it was inappropriate or mean-spirited. Maybe it’s gossip or slander. Whatever it is, we’re embarrassed. How will I be perceived or judged by others? Our mind goes into a panicked state of recovery, often using more words to try to backtrack. Our inner public relations director emerges and we make excuses. So, what is the excuse we make? It might sound like this, “Oh, I’m sorry. That’s not really me.” Here’s the problem: it is who we are. Our inner self is exposed and our outer self is forced to cover it up. What we actually show on the outside is likely a polished version of our true selves. Social media is a perfect example of a polished outer self that likely misrepresents an entirely different inner self. We post only the perfect photo with the right filter to enhance it. Smartphones allow us to take dozens of frames worth of photos in seconds just to find the perfect one for a single pose. We choose the best of the bunch and show it off to others. Our outer self isn’t what we need more time examining. The inner self needs the Holy Spirit. That’s the part I want to be Instagram-worthy. Imagine the peace we would feel if we were free from worrying if our true inner self with all of the baggage we carry through this life - ever came up to the surface. What if that inner self was more in-tune to the Holy Spirit and at peace with who God made us to be and for what purpose?
6
How do we become more in-tune to the Spirit? How do we make space for the voice of God in our lives? Whether through His Word in Scripture or the promptings of the Holy Spirit, we receive messages to comfort us and guide our lives. We can make the necessary space through spiritual disciplines, which are also referred to as spiritual practices. Discipline is a rigid-sounding word, I know, but the root word meaning “to learn” is shared with the word disciple. We’re commissioned to “make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19); engaging in spiritual disciplines is a part of the learning process. From study of Scripture and meditation to just enjoying more simplicity in our lives, we can learn the habits Jesus modeled throughout the written account of His life. Interestingly, Jesus broke away from groups on multiple occasions to be in solitude, connecting with the Father. Luke’s Gospel reports, “great crowds gathered to hear him and to be healed...but he would withdraw to desolate places and pray” (Luke 5:15b16). Jesus saw value in these practices and we should, as well! At the end of February we will launch into - Rhythms: The Way of Jesus - as we hear from God’s Word about these spiritual disciplines, “to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith” (Ephesians 3:16b-17).

WHAT’S AN ONLINE MINISTRY? By Tabitha Yannuzzi Online Ministry Coordinator | Central Have you heard of our Online Ministry at Faith Church? I know it’s still fresh in your mind to recall the time when we were all worshipping through an online platform, whether livestream on WeAreFaith.org or on one of our Campus Live Facebook pages. After almost four months of soley worshipping online, Faith Church opened its campus doors to in-person worship in July; however, we knew many people would continue to worship online. As a church we wanted to shift from simply providing a livestream for our members, to creating a service that was intentional, fostered connection and provided growth opportunities for those who gather with us through digital media. Hence the birth of our Online Ministry! We gather on Sunday mornings for services at 9 & 11 AM at WeAreFaith.tv; we have individuals and families that join us from across the country! Our worship services always have a host or two online to greet and answer any questions. The Online Ministry is not a place to go to simply watch the service, it’s a community that comes together each week eager to worship, grow and be in community with others.
A beautiful addition has been live (private) prayer before, during and after each service. This has been an invaluable piece of online ministry as it allows us to really connect with attendees and support them through difficult times. A highlight from this past fall was the kickoff of our first small groups that meet via Zoom throughout the week. I love this opportunity to get to know some of the individuals that are part of our Online MInistry and see them grow in their faith, their relationship with the Lord and the body of Christ! We are looking forward to increasing opportunities for small group involvement in 2021. As we continue to grow our Online Ministry, we are excited about the opportunity to further empower our attendees, both online and at our physical locations, to expand the way they do outreach and evangelism. We now have more options than ever before when inviting family, friends and the community to join us for church. We’d love for you to join us in being the hands and feet of Christ, by inviting people you know to Faith Church; a great introduction is participating in our Online Ministry at WeAreFaith.tv.

FINANCIAL UPDATE By John Clausing Executive Director of Operations | Central Like many businesses, organizations and even households, 2020 was an unpredictable and unconventional year in many ways. The virus, lockdowns, quarantines and suspension of in-person services put us in uncharted territory for sure! And like everyone else, the leadership of Faith Church had to strategize on how this would impact the financial situation of the church and what the budget implications would be. For context, Faith Church operates on a January - December fiscal year. Thus, the budget for 2020 was created in October and November of 2019 and approved by the Governing Consistory (church board) in December. The budget was approved with an all-campus giving goal of $7.7 million and expenses at $7.57 million. This amount is mostly divided up by Staffing (salaries and benefits - approximately 57.4%), Partnerships (missionaries; mission organizations; Christian schools and institutions; local, regional and national components of our denomination - approximately 11.5%), Ministry programs and support (approximately 21%), Debt Service (Dyer & Cedar Lake Mortgage and Schererville rent - approximately 5.7%). The uncertainty began in March as it became apparent that we would be “doing church” differently than what was expected. In-person gatherings were halted, some ministries were put on pause as people could not gather and other ministries had to operate in drastically higher capacities such as video and online streaming. Utilities were lessened, but now masks, sanitizers and disinfectants were needed. Decisions had to be made about how to execute Payroll Protection options that were available to protect jobs, and what to pull back on and what to invest more in. While many of these dynamics are still in play right now, and while this is not exactly what we had planned, we know where we landed and that was right where God intended. He met us there! 2020 ended with our contributions totalling $7,139,000 ($561,000 short of our giving goal and $436,000 short of our budgeted expenses). However, our expenses ended up at $6,855,000 ($720,000 LESS than our budgeted plans). Because the adjustments we made earlier in the year, we find ourselves in a healthy financial position as we start 2021. Once again, God provided and was faithful as He always is.
10
Even though our financial situation is healthy now, we have approached 2021 carefully. Our giving goal has been adjusted to $7.1 million and expenses are budgeted at approximately $7.4 million. As you will note this is a negative budget we are working under for 2021. Over the years we have prepared and executed budgets, being mindful that there will be a year such as this. Our current healthy financial position allows for a negative budget this year. This is the time we want to step out in faith and go forward with important ministry programs, outreach opportunities and meet mission needs. We can do so because of good economic strategies in the past and God’s faithfulness as he leads us through 2021. So, Faith Church, we thank God and we thank you for providing for the ministry of our church in 2020. It was a difficult year but it was also a time where we saw God work in amazing ways. As we enter 2021, we ask you to reflect on God’s faithfulness in the past year, to look ahead in this year and to respond to what God is calling you to in His church.

By Corrie Vos, Missions Director
Over a decade ago, God placed a small country in Africa on the hearts of Faith Church. In the time since, both Rwanda, a country about the size of Maryland, and the Faith Church community have been deeply impacted by our partnership. Through World Vision we have run for clean water, sponsored children, packed caregiver kits and more. Because of these efforts, we have had a front row seat to see the community of Karaba, Rwanda transformed and now be a part of new work in the village of Simbi. World Vision has a goal of bringing clean water to every area of Rwanda by the end of 2022 and it’s exciting to be a part of the progress! In 2020 we celebrated having raised one million dollars for clean water in Rwanda since running with Team World Vision. We are thankful to each person over the last 13 years who has run for clean water, who raised funds, who ran mile after mile to train for the Chicago Half Marathon or Chicago Marathon (and sometimes both). This March we will be organizing a 2021 Team to run for clean water, so if you’ve felt a prodding to participate, perhaps this is your year. One of the core tenants of World Vision’s strategy of community development has been through Child Sponsorship. Faith hosted our first child sponsorship event with World Vision in 2007 and over the years we have continuously sponsored on average 500700 children a year. Currently, we sponsor nearly 600 kids in the community of Simbi.
This May we are excited to be hosting a new sponsorship event alongside World Vision called, “Chosen.” This new event will give the children of Simbi the opportunity to choose us to be their sponsor. Instead of walking up to a table in one of our Faith Campus Atriums and seeing sponsorship packets with photos of kids on the cover and choosing a child to sponsor, we will sign up to be Chosen. Each of us will have the opportunity to say “yes” to having a child choose us and have our photo taken. Then the community of Simbi will host a ‘choosing party’ and put all of our smiling faces out for the children to choose their sponsor. Flipping this dynamic is such a simple, yet profound step in giving dignity to children around the world. We are excited to see who from Faith Church will sign up to be chosen and start a relationship with a child in Rwanda! Our partnership with World Vision has radically shifted how we think about missions and provided many ways to be connected to work around the world in real, tangible ways. Our Missions Team has been seeking ways to deepen our partnership in Rwanda, potentially through church planting and leadership development. We hope to share more with you as part of our three-week missions series in May.

BEECHER PASTOR’S NOTE Welcome to Faith Church Beecher! My name is Brian Dennert and I have the privilege of serving as the pastor here. My ministry here began in an interim capacity in the Spring of 2020, my family and I felt so welcomed and loved by the people of the Beecher campus that I decided to submit my name to the search team; I was honored to be selected to be the permanent pastor in the Fall of 2020. I believe you will be similarly welcomed and loved by the people of Faith Beecher, and find a spiritual family to care for you here. Our Beecher campus opened in 2012 and has sought to reach people in Beecher and the surrounding communities through worship services with biblical teaching that connects to everyday life; groups in which people experience community and belonging; and initiatives to serve and bless the local community in which God has placed us. On these pages you will find some ways you can get connected to Faith Beecher through groups and serving opportunities. We would love for you to take the next step, so please reach out to the church office or by emailing PastorBrian@WeAreFaith.org if you have any questions or want to get more information. CEDAR LAKE PASTOR’S NOTE Welcome to Faith Church! You are among friends who are on the journey of life together. We are ordinary, average people who know that we are far from perfect. In fact, our imperfection unites us together in our need for transformation. We seek to be changed by Jesus, trusting that His grace is sufficient for us. So, whatever your story is, wherever you’ve come from, whatever your current circumstances, we welcome you to be a part of this community. It is my hope that you will encounter the power of God, the truth of His Word and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. There are so many ways to get connected at Faith Church and we would love to assist you in the process. There are groups that serve together, study the Bible together and live life together. Please don’t hesitate to ask for help in getting plugged in! We believe that spiritual growth happens in powerful ways when we are connected to the community of the church. When my family and I helped launch Faith Church-Cedar Lake in the fall of 2007, we didn’t know what to expect. The adventure has been life-giving and the body of Christ has been a tremendous blessing to us. I believe that you will experience that same blessing. I look forward to meeting you in person someday soon! May God bless you! Pastor Dave Weemhoff
