THE BIG
3
Whether you’ve been attending Faith Church for a long time or you are a first time visitor, THE PAPER is here to help! Being a part of this church family is a partnership in growth, so we encourage you to be involved in 3 ways:
1
WORSHIP ON THE WEEKENDS
Gather with others to listen to a message from God’s Word, sing, pray and lift up the name of Jesus. Attend a service at one of our campuses. Faith Kids (infant5th grade) is a safe place where kids can worship Jesus at their level. Don’t miss the opportunity to gather with others and worship each week. Invite a friend.
2
CONNECT IN COMMUNITY
Being a follower of Jesus was never meant to be done alone. Sole-ranger Christianity usually means discouragement and failure. God has provided a better way- Biblical community. Community keeps us encouraged, helps us build meaningful friendships, and most importantly, helps us grow as Christians. This can be through a Mini-Church, Bible Study or Serving Team. No matter what your age, God does not intend for you to walk through life alone. Be real. Be known.
3
SERVE OTHERS
Join a weekend Serving Team at one of our campuses, serve in your neighborhood or around the world! God has gifted each of us to do something special. Discover the joy of serving.
FAITH FAMILY HIGHLIGHT CHARLIE BERTUCCI
WHAT IS YOUR NAME?
HOW DO YOU CONNECT WITH OTHERS AT YOUR CAMPUS?
Charlie Bertucci. My wife’s name is Marilyn. I have two sons, Charlie is 38 years old and Jonathan is 22. I also have twin grandsons.
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I connect with others through the Men of Faith ministry, the men’s prayer team on Wednesdays and just being around church. I love people. I always say, “8 to 80 no age gap or gender; I love people-meeting them where they are and helping them.”
Dyer
WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN GOD DO IN YOUR LIFE?
HOW DID YOU FIRST GET CONNECTED TO FAITH CHURCH?
He delivered me from a life of hell. I was involved with crime from a young age. When I was 18, I got in trouble with the law, and while my case was in the courts, I got a draft notice from the army. It was four years in prison or two years in the army. So, off I went to the army. This was 1969. I served in the Vietnam War, saw a lot of killing and put a lot of my buddies in body bags. I drank alcohol and did drugs to cope with the craziness of war. I continued this habit for another ten years after coming home from ‘Nam, and got knee deep back into crime.
One winter day I took my son sledding on the hill at Northgate Park. He was about 8 years old at the time. As I was standing at the top of the hill with the other parents, I noticed this one man didn’t have a hat on so I approached him and asked if he would like a hat because I had an extra one in my car. We got to talking and he mentioned that he was a pastor of a church called Faith Church, which was being built in Dyer. My current church was experiencing some changes so my wife and I were interested in checking this new church out. My wife went first, and the next week I went. That way, we could form our own opinion without persuading each other one way or the other. We both loved it. By the way, the name of the pastor with no hat I met that day was Bob Bouwer.
WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN GOD DO AT FAITH CHURCH? I’ve seen an explosion of growth. There’s no denying that the Holy Spirit is all over this church. It’s no secret-God is doing the work. Every one and every thing that comes through the church is covered in prayer and that’s why it’s growing.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT THE WORSHIP SERVICES? Love the praise and worship. Love the teachings. Love how the pastors try to relate their own personal walk to the message and that they are down-to-earth people.
WHERE DO YOU SERVE AT FAITH CHURCH? My wife and I both serve as group leaders in the Celebrate Recovery ministry.
Until one day, a very close friend of mine invited me to church. I blew him off, but he didn’t quit and kept on me so, finally, I told him I would go. That night in church, God forgave me for all those things I had done. Jesus paid for all my wrongs on the cross. I cried and cried and asked Christ into my heart. Ever since, I have never been the same. It’s been 27 years and I have never taken another drink or drug since. Today, life is pretty good. God has blessed me with a beautiful wife of 25 years, my boys and twin grandsons.
ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT TO SHARE? Programs don’t save people, Jesus does. People come here, and they expect you to fix them. We complicate this. We can’t fix them ourselves, but we can share how Christ fixed us. That is where the power lies. I always say, “People don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care.” People will cry out “my life is shattered.” So I say to them, “…cry out to Jesus like you just cried out to me and see how He changes you.” And later, I will hear back from these guys and they tell me it worked. I know it works. The Bible tells us there are no words to explain the joy we feel. It is so true. I am higher today than I have ever been in my entire life. Thank you, Lord, for taking my place and setting me free.
Dyer Worship Center Upgrade Part of the Reach Project included upgrading the existing video equipment from standard to high definition in a way that considered both good stewardship and necessity. We upgraded the equipment for a number of reasons: the worship experience in Dyer, Livestream capabilities and to benefit each site that receives video messages. There is still some work to be done, but the leadership by our Technical Arts directors and volunteers is nothing short of encouraging and amazing. Thanks to the amazing volunteers in Dyer who ran cable, built new desks, installed drywall and so much more. Our prayer is that this technology will make an impact on lives for many years to come. “The Family Win” is a phrase that has surfaced to express the sacrifice that we make for the greater good of the Faith Church family. Each component of the Reach Project is a “family win” - campuses celebrating other campuses building additions, rehabs, new ministries, etc. It’s a “family win” as we prepare to celebrate the grand opening of a new building in Cedar Lake, the launch of Faith Church Santo Domingo, more parking in Beecher, improvements in Schererville, Dyer and Highland…it’s a family win. Thank you for your generosity in helping to finish 2015 strong. For God’s glory!

DISCOVER FAITH & PARTNER WITH FAITH O
ur Pathway to Membership now includes two classes that will be offered multiple times a year at each campus. You must take both classes to join the church, and you will be asked to complete a Membership Request form. The goal of this two-step process is to encourage deeper relationships and meaningful membership in our church body. Discover Faith is a class that helps you learn more about Faith Church, including its history, vision, and beliefs, as well as ways to get connected in the Faith Church community. We encourage those who are new to the church or who have been around for a while but have questions about the church to attend this class. It is the first step towards membership at Faith Church. Partner with Faith helps you understand more about what it means to be a member at Faith Church, including the vows and covenant that new members affirm. People attending Partner with Faith must have already attended Discover Faith. Those desiring to join Faith Church and attending the class must also fill out a Membership Request form.

I loved the “Reset” button on a video game system when I was growing up. Things not going the way you wanted? Just hit reset and start all over! Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a “Reset” button in life where you can erase everything and start all over. However, there are moments in life where we have the opportunity to “Re-set” our priorities and patterns, with the New Year an obvious one. In many ways, the New Year can function like the “reset/restart” button on our phones and computers, shutting down programs and files that slow down our system so that we can operate better. Since the New Year is a time of “resetting,” our January sermon series is called “Reset,” focusing on how the Bible addresses the topics of spiritual, physical, emotional, and relational health, areas of life that might need “resetting” as we start the New Year. Rather than adopting a bunch of resolutions in these areas that, to be honest, we will not keep, I encourage you to pare down the amount of things going on in your life to restore life in these areas. In his influential book, “Margin, “ Richard Swenson (a Christian doctor) shows how having “margin” – space between your life’s schedule and your limits – can restore us and offer health. How so? Cutting back on the things we do allows us to get some physical rest (including sleep!) for our body (physical health). Doing less means we have more time to think and might lessen how much we have to think about (emotional health). Cutting back on the things we do gives us time to care for others and be a good friend, as we have time to help (relational health). And perhaps most of all, cutting back on things in our life creates space where we can hear from God by reading His Word and talk to Him in prayer, both at home and in public worship. In fact, doing less reminds us that we are finite and not God – we can’t do all things but God can! So rather than downloading a bunch of “apps” that will once again bog down our lives and make us run “slow,” let us simplify our lives for the sake of our social, physical, emotional, and relational health, creating space in our lives so that we can connect with God and with each other.

FAMILY

omething struck me on my wedding day that I didn’t expect. My wife, Valerie, and I stood in front of a pastor while behind us there were over a hundred people-friends and family that were there to show their love and support. Val’s father walked her down the aisle and with the hands he had used to provide for her for so many years, gave me her hand. I went in thinking it was all about us, but there is a lot more going on than just two kids in love.
When we joined the church as new members, we were asked questions I expected about our commitment to God and the truth of Scripture, but then there’s a section of the liturgy where we and the congregation are asked to make a commitment to each other. We became part of the Faith family. We are all part of a family in one form or another, and it’s by God’s design. The fact that we’re born into a family community is a natural way of revealing to us how much we need each other. Think about the growth and development of a childthe wonder in their eyes as they soak in the world around them and learn so much from watching their parents and other adults. I think that learning never stops… we still learn about God, life, how to experience and live this life through other people. Look at Deuteronomy 6. The people of God are about to enter the Promised Land-but before they do, Moses stops them for a family meeting. He outlines how important it is for the current generation to teach the next generation about God’s faithfulness. Moses urges them to make the most of each day: at meals (“when you sit in your house”), traveling to and fro in daily activity (“when you walk by the way”), at night before bed (“when you lie down”), and morning time (“when you rise”)(vs. 7). But there’s something really cool that happens in the first words of verse 4. Moses says: “Hear, O Israel:” …“O Israel”… he’s about to lay out strategy on when and how to teach children who God is, and he starts not by addressing parents only, but addresses the whole community (“O Israel”). It’s almost like he sees into the future and knows that the day is coming when we’re shuttling children and students from activity to activity-time is limited. We need to grab every moment we’ve got, and it takes more than just parents or guardians. Moses knows that we need each other; we need community to learn about God, to be reminded of His goodness and go through this life together. When I see God working in people I do life with, I get glimpses of the bigger story God is telling. We all need constant, daily reminders of who God is and how He loves us. It brings hope, it challenges us, and it gives us a sense of belonging that is hard-wired into us as humans. We need the family of God to mirror His divine qualities to us.
