THE BIG 3 Whether you’ve been attending Faith Church for a long time or you are a first time visitor, THE PAPER is here to help! Being a part of this church family is a partnership in growth, so we encourage you to be involved in 3 ways:

WORSHIP ON THE WEEKENDS Gather with others to listen to a message from God’s Word, sing, pray and lift up the name of Jesus. Attend a service at one of our campuses. Faith Kids (infant-5th grade) is a safe place where kids can worship Jesus at their level. Don’t miss the opportunity to gather with others and worship each week. Invite a friend.

CONNECT IN COMMUNITY Being a follower of Jesus was never meant to be done alone. Sole-ranger Christianity usually means discouragement and failure. God has provided a better way-Biblical community. Community keeps us encouraged, helps us build meaningful friendships, and most importantly, helps us grow as Christians. This may be through a Mini-Church, Bible study or Serving Team. No matter what your age, God does not intend for you to walk through life alone. Be real. Be known.

SERVE OTHERS Join a weekend Serving Team at one of our campuses, serve in your neighborhood or around the world! God has gifted each of us to do something special. Discover the joy of serving.

One of my favorite words in the English language is “Wow.” It’s simple, yet profound and suitable for dyslexics like me. People are drawn to “Wows.” Studies show that if there is a rating scale from 1 to 5, with 1 being bad and 5 being amazing, and someone rates something as “5,” they will tell 9 others about this experience within 12 hours. They will tell 42 people about this wow experience within a week. But as the number decreases, fewer people will be told; if the experience is rated a “3,” making it lukewarm or a “Whoa” experience, people will tell no one. We worship a “Wow!” God. Look around at His creation—the beautiful universe, a newborn baby and the intricacies of our human body. Contemplate the way in which God’s Son, Jesus, came into this world to save us. Ponder how, when Jesus was on earth, He healed people and performed amazing miracles. Yes, our God is a “Wow!” God. Too often Christians and their churches are a “Whoa” instead of a “Wow!” It has been our prayer and practice at Faith Church to create a wow experience in which people will be drawn to a wow God. We desire for people to stop and say “Wow”—being in awe of our God through our worship, preaching, children’s ministry, care ministry, etc. Several years ago I had an epiphany in which God revealed my favorite sentence: If it’s alive, it’s meant to multiply. When Faith Church was studying the possibility of going to a multi-site church ministry, it brought me to the Scriptures where God says to “be fruitful and multiply.” It started at creation when God made a world with a built-in multiplication system. For example, a healthy tree has seeds that will drop to reproduce more trees. One favorite word: “Wow!” One favorite sentence: If it’s alive, it’s meant to multiply. Let’s focus on impressing others with the “Wow” of Christ so the Kingdom can multiply! Wow…the end! Pastor Bob

We are surrounded by stories: news, blogs, posts and tweets. But there is a bigger story; a story that intertwines our personal plot lines with God’s one narrative, unifying the whole of humanity. It’s the greatest story ever told and ever lived. It’s His story and ours woven together culminating in One Big Story. Over the course of eight weeks, we’ll dive into this One Big Story digging into universal themes that span the Bible’s 66 books and thousands of years. Come and find yourself in the story God has written and is still writing today.

Week 1: January 3&4 - Good Week 2: January 10&11- Broken Week 3: January 17&18 - Promise Week 4: January 24&25 - Faithful Week 5: January 31 & February 1 - Follow Week 6: February 7&8 - The Cross Week 7: February 14&15 - Live Week 8: February 21&22 - Go

When did you start on staff? I started on the Faith Church staff December 1st (2014) as Pastor of Care Network. What will you be doing in your new position? I will be leading the Care Network Team and coordinating general pastor care, hospital calls and visitation. Also, I will be working with the elders to help provide congregational care. You were Pastor Bob’s boss...what was that like? I am glad you asked. Early on in my ministry, I served Fourth Reformed Church in Holland, MI. I met Bob one day playing basketball, and as the Lord led, Bob served the church as student pastor. We became partners in ministry. I remember taking a personality profile, and the person administering the tool said, “I don’t know if the two of you will get anything done, but I am sure you have fun together.” Well, we did get some ministry done, and we certainly had fun together for a couple a years. Just a couple things about working with Bob: You always knew when he walked in the room because there was instant energy and excitement. Also, I remember that Bob immediately started discipling a small group of men who became young leaders in the church. Tell us about your family.

WHO ARE

ANDY AND

JUDY NEARPASS

Judy and I have three grown married children. Angie is our oldest, and she lives with her husband Nathan outside of Boston. They met at Northwestern College in Iowa. They have three children: Thea who is 5, Caleb who is 3 and Naomi who is 2 months. Nathan is a pastor at a Chinese Bible Church. Our son Dave and his wife, Aubrey, live in California. Dave was ordained in June and serves as a youth pastor at Emmanuel Reformed Church in Paramount [near LA]. Dave oversees the youth ministry and is a boss to his brother Nate. [Nate does Jr High ministry at Emmanuel Church.] He and his wife, Catherine, live near Dave and Aubrey. Our children and grandchildren are truly a blessing. I just don’t know why they wanted to move so far away. What are you excited about as you start on staff here? I am excited to be working with Bob and Mike, who I have known for years, and I am very excited to be a part of a great staff here. Also, I look forward to being able to focus in ministry and using gifts in a specific area of ministry. Anything else you want to share? It was hard to say good bye to our Grace Church family, but Judy and I are ready to make Faith our church home—to be a part of the Faith family and serve the Lord here together. We know that the Lord has led us here, and we are looking forward to serving together.

Have you ever sat in church and pondered the thought “If I were a pastor…?” or “If I could be a leader on stage with my guitar…?” Faith Church believes there are people sitting in their seats that God is calling into ministry and those people might not realize it yet. Maybe they are presently busy running a company or managing an office, but deep in their gut, they know they are being called for a higher purpose. To support these life callings as well as to sustain the growth the Lord has directed, in 2012, Faith Church began an intentional training program called “Leadership Training Residency (LTR)” to equip individuals with leadership potential as a campus pastor, a worship leader or in children’s ministry. Individuals who participate in LTR may already have a full-time career but are responding to a call they feel God has placed on their life. Some LTR individuals are also enrolled in distance learning for seminary but realize the value of experience provided by hands-on learning opportunities in a group setting. LTR residents can learn from Faith’s experience as both a U-turn church (helping churches revamp or turn around for the next generation) and multi-site church, as well as from the partnership with Dr. Burt Braunius and the Church Leadership Center. Residents get both hands-on experience in their field of ministry and biblical/theological training. LTR is a place for individuals with a passion for ministry to learn, grow and develop their skills. The goal in each LTR track is to help qualified leaders refine the call they feel God has placed on their lives. This is achieved by converging classroom learning, hands-on experience, mentoring relationships and intentional assessments through cohorts. (A cohort is a group of people banded together, and each LTR track has its own cohort.) The size of each cohort is intentionally kept small-generally 8 or less-in order to create a shared community with honest feedback and offers individualized learning.

Our curriculum for the Pastor LTR track was designed to coordinate with the requirements of the “commissioned pastor” in the Reformed Church in America. Our curriculum completes four of ten competencies required for certification. The remaining requirements are completed by the individual within a three-year time period after they finish the Pastor LTR track. At the end of that time, they are tested and evaluated before they are ordained as a commissioned pastor. Multi-site pastors at Faith Church are either ordained, commissioned, or working toward one of those goals. The Pastor LTR track has become one of the initial steps in the process for pastoral leadership at Faith Church. LTR graduates, approved by our senior leadership to serve as teaching elders, have opportunities at multi-sites to teach; and they receive mentoring and coaching from our pastors. Other graduates are serving on the worship and children’s ministry teams. Three of our campus pastors have come through LTR and are working to complete the commissioned pastor process. So far we have trained about 70 people to move forward with Faith’s 20/20 vision as a multi-site church to reach the disconnected and grow the connected in Northwest Indiana and beyond. To find out more information on LTR, please visit www.faithchurchonline.org, under the “About Us” tab, or you can request information via email: ltr@faithchurchonline.org.
