with Ben & Ann Kampmeier

HELLO! July is the “hump day” month meaning we are half way through the summer season. I hope you enjoy the second half of summer and are able to squeeze in some time to rest. July also provides opportunities for us to worship, connect and grow. Glance through this issue of The Paper for ideas and ways to connect to Faith’s ministry at all of our sites. Blessings,

The Three C’s Whether you’ve been attending Faith Church for a long time or you are a first time visitor, THE PAPER is here to help! Being a part of this church family is a partnership in growth, so we encourage you to be involved in 3 ways:

CONNECT

Being a follower of Jesus was never meant to be done alone. Sole-ranger Christianity usually means discouragement and failure. God has provided a better way-Biblical community. Community keeps us encouraged, helps us build meaningful friendships, and most importantly, helps us grow as Christians. This may be through a Mini-Church, Bible study, or Serving Team. No matter what your age, God does not intend for you to walk through life alone. Be real. Be known.

CONTRIBUTE

Join a weekend Serving Team at one of our campuses. Serve in your neighborhood or around the world! God has gifted each of us to do something special. Discover the joy of serving.

CELEBRATE

Gather with others to listen to a message from God’s Word, sing, pray, and lift up the name of Jesus. Attend a service at one of our campuses. Kids (infant-5th grade) are invited to Treasureland, our children’s ministry, where they can worship Jesus in a safe environment at their level. Don’t miss the opportunity to gather with others and worship each week. Invite a friend!

MOVIN’ ON UP! Dan Whiteman talks about the inside scoop on the Hammond campus and the move to the HAST

Have you been to the Faith Church Hammond Campus lately? If not, you should check out the new look. Now don’t show up at its former location at Kenwood Elementary this Sunday morning for worship, because you won’t find anything but old school walls. That’s right. The Hammond Campus has officially moved to a new location: The Hammond Academy of Science and Technology, or “HAST” for short.

it puts us in the downtown center of Hammond, positioning us to reach a whole new community for Jesus. If you’re wondering why the Hammond Campus moved up Hohman Ave. to 33 Muenich Ct., then maybe Dan Whiteman, their Worship and Arts Director, can answer that for you. “It gives us significantly more room for growth and additional ministry opportunities. It also affords on-site storage for our equipment and saves our campus money in the long-term. Lastly, it puts us in the downtown center of Hammond, positioning us to reach a whole new community for Jesus.” Sounds like a great move for the Hammond Campus. “We are excited about the room we have for growth and the ministry opportunities that will accompany the move,” Whiteman said. “Besides strengthening the partnership we currently have with HAST, it will help us partner with

other groups in Hammond’s urban center.” Not only is the Hammond Campus reaching the community through Sunday worship services, but they also do a lot of outreach through the Hammond Arts Center—HAC. Currently, the Hammond Campus runs community art classes and monthly art exhibitions out of HAC. They also put on after-school arts programs at two local public schools. Last year they served 190 students at 3 locations through their community art classes alone. At the community art shows, they had more than 900 guests come through the doors over the course of 8 art events. They’ve had a great year so far, and are looking to expand this fall, with plans to offer the most exhibitions and classes held to date through HAC. The Faith Family Market operates out of the HAC as well, resourcing people with food during the year. They also provide meals to families in the community on Easter and Christmas. While food is important, the Hammond Campus of Faith Church goes a step further with a ministry called “Shared Blessings.” This too, operates out of HAC. Every month they give away clothing to anyone in need, and pray with those who come through, sharing the hope of Jesus. Coming in August, the Hammond Campus will host a free community picnic called “Back 2 School Jam.” They will offer food, live music, an arts tent, bounce houses, and much more. Along with all that, up to 500

backpacks filled with school supplies and a handwritten letter of encouragement and blessing will be handed out to help students in the community. Whether it’s through HAC or Sunday worship at HAST, the Hammond Campus has been able to articulate a different picture to their community of who Jesus and his church really are, all by the grace of God. █

rolling with a new ministry at Faith Church coming this fall called “Fresh Hope.” “Fresh Hope is a successful country-wide ministry, similar to the format of Celebrate Recovery in that everyone meets together in a large group at a designated time and place. After the large group meets, people are divided into small groups based on their diagnosis, and if they are a family member needing support.” Vinnie Adams added, “It’s important to know that Fresh Hope is not meant to take the place of professional therapy and counseling, but more as a supplement to improve their quality of life through Christ-centered community.” The mission of Fresh Hope is to empower individuals to live a full and faith-filled life in spite of a mental health diagnosis. █

One in four adults suffer from a diagnosable mental illness in America. Twenty percent of youth ages 13 to 18 experience severe mental disorders in a given year, according to the National Alliance on Mental Health. When more than 60 million Americans are in need of mental health services every year, there must be a lot of facilities and programs to help, right?

the Christian Reformed Church last summer to host a conference about mental illness within the church, and is continuing to give resources and encouragement for churches to address this area. Recently, Pastor Bob Bouwer and Vinnie Adams hosted “Mental Health Night” at Faith Church to heighten our awareness and wipe out the stigma of mental illness in the church.

Wrong. Federal and state funding for mental health services has actually been drastically cut. In Chicago alone, six of the twelve mental health clinics recently shut down. So where can people turn for help?

1 in 4 adults suffer from a diagnosable mental illness in America

The Church hasn’t been the best place to find support for metal illness in the past. “For many years, it was swept under the rug and considered an uncomfortable subject to talk about,” said Vinnie Adams. “When people became physically ill, typically someone from church would stop by and visit. Not the case with a mental illness. Often times, a mental illness is considered to be caused solely by a lack of spirituality in a person’s life.” Churches in America have made progressive strides toward changing that attitude. The Reformed Church of America partnered with

For the past few months, Dawn Lewis, a Faith Church member with 15 years of experience in the mental health field, has led a support group at Faith Church, for anyone with a mental illness. They meet on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays each month, 8 pm at the Dyer Campus. Dawn will continue to lead this support group through the summer. Vinnie Adams, Dawn Lewis, and a team of 7 others are getting the ball

SHIFTING GEARS WITH BEN & ANN KAMPMEIER

WHERE ARE YOU FROM? Ann and I are both Illinois natives. I grew up in the northern part of the state in Sycamore, IL; Ann is from the central part of the state, in the Peoria area.

HOW DID YOU FIRST GET CONNECTED TO FAITH CHURCH? Our first interaction with Faith was through an interview process. Ann and I were both impressed with all of the leaders that we met, and excited about the vision of Faith Church. At the end of that process, I accepted a position leading worship at both our Valpo Campus and for Catalyst on the Dyer Campus. This was in the Summer of 2012. We moved from Illinois to Northwest Indiana and have loved the privilege to serve and be a part of the Faith Church Family!

“ANN AND I HAVE BOTH BEEN REDEEMED FROM LIVES OF TOTAL REBELLION, AND WE LOVE THAT WE GET TO WALK WITH PEOPLE WHO ARE ON THE SAME JOURNEY.”

WHAT ROLE ARE YOU CURRENTLY SERVING IN? Earlier this year when the leadership of Faith asked me to consider succeeding my friend, Pastor Brett (Faith-Schererville) as the Pastor of Catalyst, we were ecstatic! God has been stirring a desire to lead as a pastor-and-wife team in our hearts since before our first visit to Faith Church. One of the reasons we felt drawn to Faith Church was the extremely well-established leadership development programs at Faith like the LTR and other opportunities. We felt that this would be the place to take that next step from worship ministry to pastoral ministry. We couldn’t be happier serving in Catalyst. We have known this ministry from the beginning of our Faith Church journey and are at home continuing our ministry journey with this amazing group of young adults.

WHAT IS CATALYST AND WHO IS IT FOR? Catalyst is the young adults ministry of Faith Church, serving the post-high through 30 somethings in our church and our region. We meet every Thursday night at 7 pm in the atrium at Faith Dyer. Our goal is to serve the young adults in our church and region through the larger vision of Faith Church to reach the disconnected and grow the connected. Because of that, we see this ministry as a necessary supplement to the other ministries of Faith Church. As our church draws so many who come from all over the spiritual spectrum every weekend, we want every young adult that walks through our doors to know that Catalyst is for them. Those that come to Catalyst will certainly get challenged in their own faith-journey, but it is also a safe place for anyone who wants to answer spiritual questions and may not be ready to commit to anything beyond that. Our goal is to create a place where young adults can just belong! Because of this, ever-deepening community is of the highest priority. We always hold a service with worship and teaching, but prioritize our small groups that meet at the close of our service for that very reason. I can’t say enough about our amazing small group leaders who befriend, care for and challenge those in their group, and above all seek to create an authentic environment for real conversation about Jesus.

WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN GOD DO IN YOUR LIFE? God has been so good to both of us! Ann and I have both been redeemed from lives of total rebellion, and we love that we get to walk with people who are on the same journey. We have seen Him provide again and again, especially through the blessing of our marriage - a marriage neither of us would have ever dreamed we would have!

FAITH SCHERERVILLE IS CHANGING LIVES Let me tell you the story of Gabe, a young man who recently started attending Open Gym on Wednesday nights at Faith Schererville. Gabe has had a rough life; he has no parents, no permanent home and few possessions. Under 21 he has been in and out of different institutions most of his young life. A couple Wednesday’s ago Gabe listened as one of Faith’s own shared their story of hope in Jesus. His response astounded us: “Is it true?” he asked. “Can Jesus change my life like He’s changed yours?” We couldn’t tell him yes fast enough! God is changing lives in Schererville and He is inviting you to be a part of this amazing story. JOIN THE TEAM! Meet our friend and Rwandan coffee farmer, Rwakabuga Andrew. Andrew is a coffee farmer from the Huro region of Northern Rwanda. Andrew, who is 64 years old, has about 470 Arabica coffee trees that he tends on his land. Rwakabuga Andrew

DRINK COFFEE. DO GOOD.

Coffee has had a deep impact in the entire Huro region. Like Andrew, who has been able to support his seven children, farmers and families in Huro are receiving a sustainable income for their crops, children are receiving education, and hope is being found. As you enjoy your coffee from Faithful Grounds or our Kiosk, you are enjoying the fruit of great passion and hard work; from the farmers’ hands to yours. This week, as you enjoy your cup, stop and remember the amazing people like Andrew, who work hard to give you their very best!
