Whether you’ve been attending Faith Church for a long time or you are a first time visitor, THE PAPER is here to help! Being a part of this church family is a partnership in growth, so we encourage you to be involved in 3 ways:

1 | WORSHIP ON THE WEEKENDS Gather with others to listen to a message from God’s Word, sing, pray and lift up the name of Jesus. Attend a service at one of our campuses. Faith Kids (infants5th grade) is a safe place where kids can worship Jesus at their level. Don’t miss the opportunity to gather with others and worship each week. Invite a friend.

2 | CONNECT IN COMMUNITY Being a follower of Jesus was never meant to be done alone. Sole-ranger Christianity usually means discouragement and failure. God has provided a better way- Biblical community. Community keeps us encouraged, helps us build meaningful friendships, and most importantly, helps us grow as Christians. This can be through a Mini-Church, Bible Study or Serving Team. No matter what your age, God does not intend for you to walk through life alone. Be real. Be known.

3 | SERVE OTHERS Join a weekend Serving Team at one of our campuses, serve in your neighborhood or around the world! God has gifted each of us to do something special. Discover the joy of serving.

FAITH FAMILY H IG H L I G H T LEXIE CUPPLES

WHAT IS YOUR NAME? Lexie Cupples

WHERE ARE YOU FROM? I grew up in Morris, IL and am currently residing in Alsp, IL.

HOW DID YOU GET CONNECTED TO FAITH CHURCH? I was first an intern in the Reflectors Ministry last January and then came on staff in the fall!

WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN GOD DO AT FAITH CHURCH? On more than one occasion and throughout many of the different ministries that are offered at Faith Church (Fresh Hope, Celebrate Recovery, Faith Kids) I have seen the authentic meaning of what it means to be in community with people. Through that community, I have seen the Spirit change people’s hearts. It’s really beautiful.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT THE WORSHIP SERVICES? I enjoy the simplicity of the sermons. The Pastors do a really great job of not over-complicating the point they are getting across but still putting deep biblical meaning behind it.

WHERE DO YOU SERVE AT FAITH CHURCH? I am the program director for Reflectors at Cedar Lake.

HOW DO YOU CONNECT WITH OTHERS AT YOUR CAMPUS? I am still fairly new to the Cedar Lake and Dyer Campus, but I have developed really great friendships with the volunteers in the ministry. I try to set up lunches and coffee so we are able to get to know each other outside the walls of the church. I am also looking forward to joining a small group this spring as well.

WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN GOD DO IN YOUR LIFE? God has become so much more real to me during my time at Faith. I have been a Christian for years, but I don’t think I quite understood complete surrender, dependence, and trust until this past year. Ministry is not easy, but when we are able to be in complete surrender to the Lord it takes the burden off of us. I am so blessed by the community at Faith Church, especially in the way that God has blessed me with some great friendships.

Over the past few months we have been able to complete a couple of projects locally via the Reach Project as well as continue work on a couple of our bigger projects to reach people in far off places. At our Highland campus, we changed the balcony sight lines to improve the worship experience and added technology upgrades so people can view the service from various parts of the building. We installed new signs at our Dyer campus that display our new logo and stand out from the road. In April, we were able to send a final installment to help complete the vocational training school in Brazil. (If you want to see it, sign up for the Brazil missions trip!) Faith Santo Domingo continues to reach people with the gospel, as people are coming to faith in Christ and they are making inroads in a local school. They have recently been able to move out of a church they rented for an evening service and into a school that allows them to worship on Sunday mornings. Projects on the horizon include installing and updating signs with our new logo in Beecher and Highland. Other work will be done at the Dyer campus, but are currently in the planning and preparation phase.

FINANCIAL UPDATE We also want to give an overall financial update for Faith Church as we have just finished the first quarter of 2017. Our giving for the first three months of the year was a little over $1.4 million, which is about 5% above our giving from the first quarter of 2016. In addition, the staff has been watching their expenses and have spent only 93.5% of their budget for the first quarter. The first quarter of the year is when we experience more expenses than in other quarters due to commitments to some of our mission partners (about 28% of our expenses occur in the first quarter while we historically receive only 22% of our giving in the first quarter). With this in mind, we budget and plan accordingly, using our cash reserves from the end of the year to help pay for the expenses in this quarter. Therefore, we remain in good financial shape. Once again, thank you for your generosity as a church community. The act of giving offers us a chance to worship God and also to invest in His kingdom now.

RESTORING THE WORLD

ONE RELATIONSHIP AT A TIME BY: BRAD HAITSMA

I

love restoration. Things that are old, broken, deemed useless, are transformed into something new, something better, something wonderful. From hands-on restoration to watching television shows where restoration is the theme, there is something almost as beautiful in the process as there is in the final result. God is in the restoration business. The whole of Scripture tells of His restoring our broken world and humanity’s broken relationship with Him into something new, something better, something beautiful. As a church, Faith is in the restoration business, too. Our Vision Statement clearly sets out our goal of “Restoring the World, One Relationship at a Time.” As a church, Faith believes that all followers of Christ are called to a higher purpose; that as “salt and light” we have been called to make a difference in our world, and that our congregation should be actively engaged in building relationships both inside and outside of our church walls. We need to cultivate deeper relationships with God, with our Faith family, but also with co-workers, neighbors, family, and friends. At Faith Valpo, where I have the privilege of serving, we are intentional about developing and encouraging life-giving relationships both inside and outside of our church walls. We foster relationships within our church in many of the ways you would expect. One way is through Serving Teams, groups of people working together to serve in our church and in our community. Another way is through Mini-Churches, often called small groups or life groups, where people gather to study and discuss specific topics. These mini-churches gather in people’s homes or at church, share a meal, and support, encourage and pray for each other. We also see relationships built through our Men’s and Women’s groups. One of the more unique ways Faith Valpo encourages relationships within our church is through First Sunday. On the first Sunday of each month, our campus hosts a potluck luncheon following our 10 am service. This has proven to be a great time for everyone at Faith Valpo to get to know those worshipping around us week in and week out on a deeper level. Great friendships are formed and great conversations are enjoyed each month. When it comes to the community we serve, we’ve found that our building can often be one of our greatest resources. In the past, our location has served as a homeless shelter and warming or cooling facility during extreme weather. Faith Valpo makes its building available for use by our community for events and parties and is often booked up every Saturday during the fall and winter months. The available space, combined with our Play-Place area, has been a wonderful tool connecting younger families to Faith. Valpo Moms, a resource and ministry to mothers of young children, connects over 140 local area moms via social media. They often gather for Playdates, Meet-ups, and regular meetings, and will provide advice, recommendations, encouragement and prayer for each other. The narrative of Scripture is focused on God’s restoration of our broken world as the result of our sin. He could have chosen any way to accomplish His ongoing mission, but he has chosen us, the local church, to be His “hands and feet” to a lost and hurting world. And the most effective way to reach those that God wants us to reach is through being involved in life-giving, encouraging relationships with others. What about you? How are you reaching out to others, building relationships both within and outside of your church? Will you join with Faith Church as we seek to live out our calling to see restoration and transformation “One Relationship at a Time”?

WHY FAMILY SUMMER WORSHIP? BY: R O N DA H UIS MA N

S

ummer is coming and hopefully most of us are planning to slow down, enjoy the sunshine, and spend some fun days with our family and friends. At Faith Church, our children’s ministry, Faith Kids, also changes as we head into summer. Throughout the school year, our Faith Kids ministry is available for Infants - 5th Graders at all of our locations during each service. This ministry requires hundreds of volunteers to keep the kids safe and teach them about our awesome God at three different levels: nursery, preschool, and elementary. Our volunteers serve on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly basis where they rock and cuddle babies, play cars and dolls and Connect Four, welcome the new kid who is nervous, teach large group Bible stories using costumes and props, connect and pray with kids in small groups, and sing and dance to crazy fun worship songs. Mostly, they shine the love of Jesus to the kids who enter our doors! Without these faithful volunteers in orange T-Shirts who love the Lord and love kids, this ministry would not exist. As a well-deserved thank you to each one, we give them the summer off. We feel this increases our retention probability of these wonderful people, and it gives them a break so that they’re ready to come back in the fall refreshed and excited to serve in Faith Kids again! This is why we scale back our Faith Kids ministry in the summer and offer it to just nursery and preschool kids each week. We kindly ask anyone who calls Faith Church home to volunteer in Faith Kids this summer. If you can sign up to help for a one-time “Summer Serve” at your campus, we would be grateful. The kids who have completed Kindergarten and older will worship with their families during the summer months. Faith Church’s summer series title is Animal Kingdom - finding the gospel in Bible stories with animals. We are excited that these Bible stories will delight and teach people of all ages! We embrace these summer months as a great opportunity for families to gather together in a multi-generational worship experience. Did you know that in the Bible a donkey talks, ravens feed a man on the shore of a brook, a weird thing happens to a few pigs, and frogs swarm houses, invading even the people’s beds and ovens! Those are just a few of the Bible stories we will be unpacking this summer. Who knows, maybe some animals will come visit your campus! We hope to see you and your families this summer. Bring some friends along (maybe even the furry ones)!

SHORT TERM TRIPS

Interested in serving with Faith Church on a global serving trip? Here are some awesome opportunities available this year. For more information or to sign up, visit WeAreFaith.org or email missions@WeAreFaith.org.

HAITI: GOD’S LITTLEST ANGEL’S ORPHANAGE July 17-24, 2017 OR November 13-20, 2017 | Team leaders: Susan Mender (July), Amy Smith (November) | Trip Cost $1,400 Purpose of the Trip: There are a variety of ways both men and women can serve on this trip. 1. Caring for babies and toddlers – Although there is a limited staff, volunteers can help give the children special attention. Volunteers may interact with the kids by cuddling them, working on their developmental needs, feeding them, etc. 2. Construction – GLA is currently building on their new property called Ft. Jacques. Skilled laborers (carpenters, electricians, plumbers) or those who are just willing to sweat may be invited to help with the new construction. 3. Anything else – Our goal is to help aid this fantastic ministry any way we can. There may be additional projects such as painting, maintenance, cleaning, sorting and distributing supplies, or small repair projects. All volunteers must be ready and willing to serve wherever there may be a need.

BRAZIL: IPM (FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF MANAUS) November 11-18, 2017 | Team Leader: Sue Matthysse | Trip Cost: $2,600 Purpose of the Trip: There are a variety of ways both men and women can serve on this trip. 1. Medical Ministry - Are you a physician, dentist or other type of medical professional? We would love to have you join our team and serve alongside the Brazilian doctor that travels with the boat. 2. Relational Ministry - The medical boat visits various villages every 6-8 weeks throughout the year. IPM loves to use the medical ministry as an opportunity to do outreach within the villages. This could involve helping with a VBS/children’s program, assisting in a church service, or simply praying for folks waiting for their time with the doctor. 3. Anything else – IPM is a large church with significant influence along the Amazon River. Our number one priority is to come alongside and help this church reach their goals. There may be additional projects or asks along the way, and we will be ready and willing to serve wherever there may be a need.

ELIM HOPE PACKS (DYER CAMPUS ONLY)

We will be collecting school supplies in partnership with Elim Christian Services from July 15-30. The school supplies we collect will be brought over to Elim Adult Services for their clients to sort and pack for distribution. Once packed, the supplies will then be distributed through our partnership with Chicagoland Prison outreach, to families of those incarcerated. Supply lists will be available at Faith Dyer beginning July 15. Supplies can be placed into the blue bins, which will be available in the Atrium at Faith Dyer between July 15-30th.

FAITH SANTO DOMINGO UPDATE BY: DAVID MOJICA GRACE & PEACE! God is blessing the efforts at our new worship location. We are gathering for worship on Sundays at a public school where we are heavily active in during the week. Besides experiencing great fruit coming out of our effort at our new campus, God has also put us in favor with a host of school directors at other locations and has similarly connected us with Kingdom-minded leaders who have or are catching on to the vision of adopting schools as potential mission and worship centers. So, on the one hand, we continue to focus on strengthening our first plant with strong worship, discipleship and service in the community, and on the other hand, we have begun connecting with prospective gospel partners as a means of unleashing an indigenous-led church planting movement in public schools. Our prayer is for five-to-six partners to adopt our school model and tweak it to their context, but to enter and engage those schools already waiting for a church to enter by the end of 2017. As a new church plant, we are not yet ready to adopt another school where we could plant out of; however, God has sent us a couple versed in Scripture and in Christian ministry with real servant hearts, who could potentially be sent as local missionaries to a new school location by early 2018.
