THE BIG 3 Whether you’ve been attending Faith Church for a long time or you are a first time visitor, THE PAPER is here to help! Being a part of this church family is a partnership in growth, so we encourage you to be involved in 3 ways:
Worship on the Weekends Gather with others to listen to a message from God’s Word, sing, pray and lift up the name of Jesus. Attend a service at one of our campuses. Faith Kids (infant-5th grade) is a safe place where kids can worship Jesus at their level. Don’t miss the opportunity to gather with others and worship each week. Invite a friend.
connect in Community Being a follower of Jesus was never meant to be done alone. Sole-ranger Christianity usually means discouragement and failure. God has provided a better way-Biblical community. Community keeps us encouraged, helps us build meaningful friendships, and most importantly, helps us grow as Christians. This may be through a Mini-Church, Bible study or Serving Team. No matter what your age, God does not intend for you to walk through life alone. Be real. Be known.
SERVE OTHERS Join a weekend Serving Team at one of our campuses, serve in your neighborhood or around the world! God has gifted each of us to do something special. Discover the joy of serving.
LOOKING BACK ON
When a couple reaches their 50th wedding anniversary, it calls for a grand celebration surrounded by family and friends. And when they are all gathered together, the big question everyone likes to ask the long-time couple is, “What’s the secret to staying together?” Many of them answer with something similar to this:
With Bob Bouwer & Ryan Matthysse
“God is behind it all.”
FIFTY YEARS Written by Marjorie DeVries
The same can be said for Faith Church. Recently, on October 5, 2014, Faith Church held a huge gathering at Star Plaza in Merrillville, Indiana, to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Two services. Seven campuses. All in one place. Now that the celebration has passed...pour yourself a cup of hot coffee and grab a comfy seat as we recap the major anniversary event with Pastor Bob Bouwer & Ryan Matthysse. What inspired Faith Church to have this huge celebration? Pastor Bob: This is a milestone year for Faith Church. It’s been around for 50 years. The last milestone celebration was when Faith turned 25. That was before the “U-Turn process.” Faith Church began as a vibrant Christian outreach to the South Holland, Illinois community in 1964. The Lord blessed Faith and it grew. The church had an ongoing heart to reach the community for Jesus, but the “how” was no longer clear. So after 25 years, I challenged the congregation with a difficult U-Turn process—developing the necessary tools to reach a lost and seeking community. Now we celebrate the 25 years since then, along with the first 25 years, of course.
Was the 50th Anniversary event tied in with the Reach Project?
3. The band and vocalists were great.
Pastor Bob: Originally? No. But I believe God set it up providentially. In 2008, we wanted to work on the possibility of an expansion at Faith Church Dyer. But with the economic crash, we didn’t think it was the right time. Instead of expanding the Dyer Campus, we did something that wasn’t on the radar.
4. Taking the Star Plaza auditorium and turning it into church and praising God. The whole event was amazing.
God put it in our hearts to expand through multi-sites. We added five sites, and now in 2014, Faith Church has different needs. The 50th Anniversary celebration became the perfect time—God’s timing—to “tee” us up for the Reach Project. Now, we can swing away.
What was the benefit of having a gathering all in one place? Pastor Bob: We had new guests come for the first time. Some of the sites saw those first time guests attend their service that next Sunday too. Those were evangelistic surprises. Very exciting. Also, it was so amazing to worship in masses with volume. What has the feedback been?
Pastor Bob: It’s been good. People What were some personal sent in comments about how they highlights from the event? liked the Pastors’ Benediction. All of us pastors gathered on stage, and Pastor Bob: each gave a benediction passage 1. Seven sites of Faith Church at from the Bible. People also one place together. commented on the songs-singing “One,” a song by Faith Church’s 2. 6100 people, plus record Worship team, and “How Great numbers watching livestream. Thou Art.” Typically we have about 100 households watch via live Ryan: Overwhelmingly positive. stream on the weekend. We Many appreciated the oneness had about 300 households from worshipping all together in one watching through livestream place. There was a strong sense for the 50th event. That was a of unity-something to protect and huge highlight for me. cherish. 3. The singing. The little kids in choir. The drums. I thought that was all really special.
Ryan, what was your role in the 50th Anniversary celebration? Did you have to do a lot of preparation for this event?
Ryan: 1. The energy that filled the auditorium and the joy. 2. The large representation of people from all the different campuses.
My role was to lead the team that led the worship. We all worked as a team. We prayed and wrestled with every single piece of the worship service to make sure it was the best choice.
The little flashlights that were handed out, the songs, the rehearsals… a lot of hours were spent on planning, and for months leading up to the event. The Arts Department worked hard on the video footage. It took an army of staff and volunteers to pull the event off: the technicians behind the scenes, the choir, the band...there were 150 people just on the stage throughout the service. It really was an amazing event. Pastor Bob, you said that we may do this again (gather as one large church). Is that true? We are looking at the possibility of gathering all together at the Star Plaza, the Sunday before every Thanksgiving. I’m not saying for sure, but we are looking towards that possibility. And if that were possible, it would start next year, not this coming Thanksgiving. After the 50th Anniversary event, have you heard of any members being inspired by the Reach Project to go out and do something positive? Pastor Bob: There’s definitely a buzz in social media with the Reach Project. As people left the 50th event, they received a 30-day Reach Project devotional to read, pray and join all together in experiencing what God holds for our future.

Q. Where do you serve at Faith Church? A. I normally serve on the TAG team and my wife serves on the front-line, but we are always willing to fill in wherever we are needed.
RENARDELL, ANDREA, ERIC & AYVA BURNS Q. What are your names? And do you have any children? A. My name is Renardell Burns, more commonly known around church as “B.” My wife’s name is Andrea, and we have two children; Eric and Ayva. Q. Where are you from? A. We are originally from Sauk Village, Illinois, but we made our way to our forever home in Schererville, Indiana, back in 2011. Q. How did you first get connected to Faith Church? A. Shortly after we moved to Schererville, we were on a mission to find a church home to raise our children in. Andrea decided to visit numerous churches in the area based on her own Google search, but we were always curious about that big, beautiful church on the corner that we often drove past. On her first visit to Faith, she immediately felt a connection, so the rest of us came with her the following week. I knew right away that it was the perfect fit. We were welcomed with open arms. I have never seen my children so excited to go to church (and they hadn’t even been to the children’s ministry yet). Q. What have you seen God do at Faith Church?
A. One of the most powerful things we have seen God do at Faith is gather a mix of beautifully different people to worship under one roof. My wife and I come from two completely different religious backgrounds so seeing this was like a breath of fresh air. There is no doubt that God is moving His people to come together to worship His holy name. Q. What do you enjoy about the worship services? A. Our favorite part about Sunday Service is witnessing the Holy Spirit move through the crowd during praise and worship. There is nothing more powerful than bringing God to life through music. After regularly attending services at the Dyer campus, we knew we wanted to do more, and then the opportunity arose for us to go on mission to help launch the Schererville campus. After praying on it, we walked into the gym at Campagna on a Wednesday night, and we haven’t looked back since. We knew, without a doubt, that this is where we would call home. The small group, that was already acquainted, invited us in and made us feel an even greater sense of comfort. Pastor Brett is doing amazing things in Schererville, and we are so excited to be a part of it.
Q. How do you connect with others at your campus? A. Open gym on Wednesday nights has been the perfect way to stay connected not only with the other members but with the kids of Campagna as well. We’ve even had a few Bible studies with the Campagna kids. It’s always a good time during Saturday setup, even though you would expect it to be stressful; we really do have a good time together. We are also looking forward to the “mini- churches” that are soon to come. Q. What have you seen God do in your life? A. God has done some major work in my life. It was no accident that Andrea and I met in high school, and it is by His grace that we have been together ever since. He has also blessed me with two beautiful, healthy children who believe in Jesus and are eager to learn more about His life. Q. Anything else you want to share? A. When we welcomed God into our lives—our lives just got better. Our bond as husband and wife is stronger than we ever imagined, and our love for our children is immeasurable. We strive to live by this verse: Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Romans 12:12 We are grateful for our “Faith Family” and look forward to watching it grow.

HONDURAS Mission Trip Within the country of Honduras, thousands of children become orphaned or abandoned each year. Many children are surrendered to orphanages by parents or guardians who are simply unable to feed them. All God’s Children has grown out of the passion to serve these children and the young people of Honduras. Faith Church has been a ministry partner with All God’s Children for many years, taking numerous trips and even sponsoring some of the children there. The Mission Team is excited to be sending a team down there again this January. If you have a willing servant’s heart, we would love to see you be a part of this trip. Participants will serve by organizing games and activities with the younger children at the orphanage to promote relationship building or working alongside older boys in construction projects. Purchase with a Purpose When Life is Hard By James MacDonald Why does life have to be so hard? God has the answer! He hasn’t abandoned you. He is right there, wanting to help you, direct you, sustain you. He is in your trial right now and He can use it to accomplish great things. Find God’s purpose in your pain and don’t let bitterness, unbelief or discouragement rob you of the treasure God is refining in you. This month as we study the book of Ruth, When Life if Hard can help you discover how God works in the midst of suffering. Pick up a copy for you or a friend today.
