DEAR
FAITH CHURCH FAMILY & FRIENDS, Earlier this summer I felt an eruption in me by the Spirit for a call to prayer, which led to our first ever Prayer-a-thon Relay. We had over 400 people participate in the 26.2 hour relay, seeking the Lord for renewal, revival and awakening in our own hearts, in Faith Church and the world. Stemming from this event and the weeks following, I noticed God was having me personally hone in on the topic of prayer, to create a culture of prayer. Let me explain - as Christians we know about prayer; we’ve read about it in the Bible; mom and dad had us pray before eating dinner. I’m thinking you’ve also said, commented or texted something along the lines of, “I’ll be praying for you” or “Lifting you up” or simply the prayer hands emoji. But how many times have those words been followed by an action? How many empty prayers have we prayed? I think one of the reasons for this is because we don’t believe in the actual power that can come from prayer. I think back to when my friend Clayton shared as part of a sermon at Faith Dyer a few years ago that he may have never truly known what it meant to be lifted up in prayer until that’s all he had to rely on. He had gone through great loss and severe health problems, and he shared that the only way he got through each personal event was because an army of family and friends (and people he didn’t even know personally) was literally lifting him up through their prayers. “I know what it’s like to have people praying for me; when I couldn’t pray for myself, other people stood in my place and prayed with me.”
Wilcock. By nature he was a calm and compassionate pastor. One day the small staff gathered together and sitting in a circle we were instructed to pray. It was only a couple minutes into the prayer when Michael boldly demanded, “Stop it. I know in my spirit that some of you are not praying.” For a quiet man to make such a profound statement, you better believe that lit our prayer time on fire and sure enough, the Holy Spirit showed up. We could feel God in the room! Why do I share these examples with you? Because prayer should never be your last option. Prayer should be part of who you are. Prayer should be the first thing you think of when your child is sick and the first thing you think of when you get an A on your test. It’s telling God about your day; it’s asking Him for help; it’s praising Him for helping a friend; it’s lifting up the parents with a newborn; it’s rejoicing at good news from the doctor. It’s all the above. Last question - Is there someone in your life you would refer to as a prayer warrior? This would be someone you can submit a prayer request to and you just KNOW they will be praying for you. I wonder why you didn’t think of yourself….because we can all be prayer warriors. Think of the impact it could mean if the 4,000 people of Faith Church were prayer warriors! Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. - Jeremiah 29:12 (ESV)
So as I dug deeper in my studies, in my devotional time and in prayer (both listening and talking), I was brought to a moment in my life when I was a pastoral resident, learning from a man named Michael 4
FAITH FAMILY HIGHLIGHT
JOSH & ASHLEY BRUINIUS
JOSH & ASHLEY BRUINIUS
WHERE ARE YOU FROM? Lowell, Indiana HOW DID YOU FIRST GET CONNECTED TO FAITH CHURCH? Josh and his family started going to the church back when it was at Cedar Lake Ministries. Ashley saw Faith Church with her family on the way to paddle board at Cedar Lake and spontaneously decided to go there the next Sunday morning. WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN GOD DO AT FAITH CHURCH? Over the years we have seen the number of people attending Faith Church grow tremendously as well as the number of people committing their lives to God through baptism and profession of faith. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT THE WORSHIP SERVICES? We love to gather together every week with a community of people all believing in and praising our God. WHERE DO YOU SERVE AT FAITH CHURCH? Ashley serves on the Worship Team, in Reflectors and also helps with childcare for MomsNation. Josh serves as a Youth Leader for Faith Students. HOW DO YOU CONNECT WITH OTHERS AT YOUR CAMPUS? We connect with others through conversations on Sunday mornings and through the groups in which we serve at Faith Church. We also build relationships through different small groups we are in.
WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN GOD DO IN YOUR LIFE? In our lives we have seen God’s hand in everything; from being with us and keeping us safe in car accidents to getting us both through Josh being gone for boot camp. God has been teaching us how to truly trust in and be more like Him every day. ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT TO SHARE? Fun Fact: We first met at Faith Church Cedar Lake and then four years later, in 2020, we had our wedding ceremony and reception there as well!

HERE WE GO AGAIN!
L
ike many of you, it has been so fun catching up on some long awaited travel plans this year. When our family visited the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in June, one of the rangers mentioned that their visitor numbers were higher in May/ June than they typically are during their peak months (July/ August), and so they were anticipating setting new records this year in the number of visitors to the park. I’ve noticed many other Faith families also enjoyed the Smoky Mountains this summer and a variety of other places as we ‘catch up’ on travel plans we put on pause last year.
As much as I’ve been eager to get our family out on vacation, I’ve been even more eager to get teams out again on mission to communities throughout the United States and the world. It’s one facet of missions I’ve always loved. Getting our feet on the ground in unfamiliar soil does something unique to stretch our mindset and living with a team in places a little outside our comfort zone bonds individuals and families in such profound ways. In the midst of all this it seems our hearts are a little more open to what God may be saying to us and we are a little more receptive to seeing the image of God in the faces of our neighbors.

Though we continue to pause on many global mission trip efforts as COVID numbers in Brazil, India, Indonesia (all areas Faith is partnered in mission) surge - we are excited to be able to send our first trip since COVID with World Renew to North Carolina in November! Faith Church sent our last team with World Renew in 2018 to Houston, though there have been many individuals who have served faithfully on their own in the time since. By joining with families around the world, World Renew has been changing the story of hunger, poverty and illness for nearly 60 years. “Together, we change stories, and those stories change the world.” Staff and leaders from World Renew share that they are often the last to leave areas of disaster. World Renew works through local churches to serve clients who have exhausted all resources, insurance, etc., to help complete the work needed on their home after a disaster. Faith Church will be sending a team to serve with World Renew in Pamlico County, North Carolina from Friday, November 5 to Saturday, November 13. Homeowners and their families have been displaced for 2 ½ years from storms in 2018 & 2019 and need help rebuilding their homes. You can share God’s love with the people of Pamlico County in real and tangible ways as we serve in various gutting, cleaning and rebuilding projects, specifically among those in lower income areas still struggling to overcome and move ahead. If you’re interested in learning more about this trip and staying in the loop on other upcoming trips as we head into 2022, visit WeAreFaith.org/trips.

TOUGH CONVERSATIONS LET’S TALK. Transgenderism, sexuality, abuse, mental health & depression, racism, political passion & divisiveness inundate the headlines and social feeds. But are we really talking about them? While these subjects evoke strong emotions, ultimately, they are an integral part of the stories of real people navigating really hard realities. Together, let’s relearn BY: MEL BENDLE the art of understanding and civility. Is it possible to dialogue humbly and confidently from a biblical worldview and validate people whether or not we are aligned in perspective or opinion? While we work to transform the world one relationship at a time, all too soon we encounter the reality that stories are often messy. Can it be said we honor each other right where we are regardless of the tidiness of our narrative? Can we be identified as people who truly listen, who seek understanding, who desire to learn and who value people not based on their leanings but based on whose image they are made in? Can we be kind in our discourse? When cultural norms shift to a stance which blatantly opposes God, we no longer have the option to be passive or uninvolved. We are given an opportunity, a divine gift, to step into the conversation, love well, listen hard and let our words and actions bear witness to who God is. Albeit uncomfortable at times, we must listen, step in and speak, especially for those most vulnerable in our population, giving a voice of truth where there is no voice at all. What we speak matters, but how we speak and how we listen matter as well. We believe the Bible shapes every area of our lives. When we sift current issues through its lens, we become sharp critical thinkers with an expanded biblical-
10
ly-centered worldview. Our six-week dive into Tough Conversations later this fall is designed to challenge you to become an active critical thinker and an engaged listener whose communication practices embody love and grace without sacrificing conviction and truth. Current culture will absolutely collide with a biblical worldview. But the impact can produce lives transformed from simply having conversations, sharing life and testifying to God’s best plan for each of our stories.
To further ground our biblical worldview and capacity for critical thinking, we are intentionally stocking the weekend services with a variety of guests who happen to be experts in their fields and who welcome us into the conversation. They will inspire HOW we think and allow us the opportunity to assess the ins-and-outs of culture today. A plethora of insights and resources will be available to complement our weekend learning as we continue the conversations around coffee cups and dinner tables.

On August 5 & 6 Faith Church hosted its 17th Global Leadership Summit. Over 600 registrants across Northwest Indiana and South Chicagoland registered to attend, whether at Faith Dyer, a mini site or viewing online. One of our mini sites was composed of the Faith Students Leadership Team from Highland/Munster. Faith Students Director Abdiel Valerio invited this team to attend because of his passion for our students to grow into leaders where they currently are. “Whether it’s being a leader in their homes, schools, friend groups or neighborhoods, leadership at the youngest age matters, too. Luke 2:52 says, ‘and Jesus grew in wisdom, stature and favor with God and favor with men.’ My goal is to develop our students to grow in these things as Jesus did and consider my own growth as well.” The student leaders highlighted some of their key takeaways:
Was there one line, quote or story that stood out to you? Zinabu: “What risks do I need to take?” & “Be true to yourself.” It opens my mind to think about what I need to do to accomplish a goal. I really tied these two together because it’s important to take risks but at the same time to stay true to your identity. Emmaleigh: “Only you can choose who you are” - Ibukun Awosika I enjoyed this because in a world where everyone wants to fit in, you don’t see people who stand out anymore. They all try to be like someone else.
What speaker really stood out to you? Atikilt: A.R. Bernard I think when he talked about how some people view Christianity as a “white man religion” he really put a good perspective on the fact that Jesus and Christianity isn’t about being white or about being about a race. I believe there can be a dividing line with Christians. There is a lot of separation of cultures and I believe Christianity shouldn’t be segregated, it’s something that brings unity. I think it’s important to build bridges with other cultures so we can represent that kind of unity that Jesus is about. Sammi: Jamie Kern Lima I think hearing about her story that she endured rejection and still made a huge impact on an entire industry. Knowing that she kept going after each rejection inspires me to be someone who doesn’t accept rejection.
Is there anything you learned that you think you can apply to your life as an influencer? Morgan: To be kind and patient with people. I am encouraged to use my outlets of influence for God. Luke: “What is the best that could happen” “What could have gone better.” I think that when I think more about positive things, it can help me really have a change of perspective to my life.

STORIES
F
aith Church is comprised of imperfect people called by a perfect God to restore the world one relationship at a time. Each one of us imperfect people has a background, a story, a purpose. A showcase of how God has walked with us, how He’s showed up, how He’s pulled us through the trenches, how He’s given us a wink when we’ve needed it most. Have you ever uttered the words, “I don’t like people knowing the details of my life.” Sharing even a small snippet of our personal life with another can cause us to feel vulnerable. It’s a yucky place for us to wade through because then that means someone could think something about us, about our actions. In a sermon preached by Pastor Dave Nearpass (Dyer), he said something to the effect of - I know how much arguing it took to get here this morning. It was funny, yet, offered the taste of realism. It was the truth. Disclosing our struggles, hardships, “baggage” and even the mess of our life is really, really hard. It makes for the reality of being imperfect; it makes
for the vulnerability of someone thinking less of us. However, when we are authentic and real, people can actually care about us more as they understand our struggles, realize they are not alone and have a hope for what God can do. We are called to be story-tellers of God’s transformation. He wants to use your life, your story, as a testimony of His glory. Knowing there is purpose from your struggles makes your life a beautiful piece of art that fits perfectly into His greater masterpiece. My mouth will tell of your righteous acts, of your deeds of salvation all the day, for their number is past my knowledge. With the mighty deeds of the Lord God I will come; I will remind them of your righteousness, yours alone. O God, from my youth you have taught me, and I still proclaim your wondrous deeds. So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to another generation, your power to all those to come. - Psalm 71:15-18
We have a Stories page on our website - WeAreFaith.org/Stories - where we feature real people, in real relationships, living real life. The reason why these individuals have shared their testimony is because their lives have been forever changed by God - and perhaps in sharing, God may use their story to change your own life.
God Story: Unexpected loss of my husband Ministries Walking with Me: Faith Munster “Even in the midst of that [passing of my husband], I have never felt so surrounded by God’s love. That’s an oxi-moron, that doesn’t make sense. How can you be in such pain but yet feel so loved.”
Natasha Simmons God Story: Battle with Cancer
Ministries Walking with Me: Overcomers “I believe anyone suffering a life threatening illness, you can be a victor even if you don’t survive it. You can be a victor in Christ. You don’t have to be a victim of what you’re suffering from.”
God Story: Admitting my Addiction & Repairing our Marriage Ministries Walking with Me: Celebrate Recovery, The Ravines “...when you surrender and allow Him to begin the refining process, He never takes His eyes off you....It’s a powerful enemy we have; we are nowhere near capable of standing up on our own.”
Dan Housman God Story: Fighting Addictions & Finding Forgiveness Ministries Walking with Me: Celebrate Recovery “God didn’t save me cause I’m a great person….He saved me to share this story.”
God Story: Teen to Cancer Survivor Ministries Walking with Me: Faith Cedar Lake “...I tell you this...to make you realize that in order to change lives and use the gifts God has gifted you, you’re going to have to fight some serious battles…”
Haley Wigboldy God Story: Finding hope under a tree in the jungle of Sudan Ministries Walking with Me: Faith Dyer “I pray every day that God will continue to use my life, to be able to reach those still living in darkness, those who have been neglected for too long, to be able to find hope…”
Joe Digiovanni Lisa Grove God Story: Former Atheist, Addict, Abuser, Liar Ministries Walking with Me: Faith Church Staff “All these words paint a picture of the place I was in when Jesus reached down and pulled me out of the darkness.”
God Story: Navigating Fear & Anxiety
Michael Panther
Ministries Walking with Me: Men of Faith “I didn’t tell anyone out of fear, fear of showing other people that I have a struggle...learning through the process that everyone is fighting a fight.”

FINANC As summer moves to the rearview mirror, the fall ministry season and its busyness is right in front of us. Of course, the reality is, ministry really happens year round. BY: JOHN CLAUSING This past summer brought us outdoor worship services at many campuses, an all-campus worship night, SpringHill day camp, Student ministry retreats, the Global Leadership Summit and a Reflector’s Superhero party, just to name a few gather, grow, give and go events! As we transition into our fall ministry season, this year is particularly unique as it coincides with the first quarter of our new fiscalyear budget. You may remember from previous articles, we switched our budget year to July 1 - June 30. To make this switch our 2021 budget started in January and was abbreviated to end on June 30. July 1 marked the first day of our 2021/2022 budget, thus [at the time of this article], we are in the middle of the first quarter. This adjustment will help us to be even more strategic throughout the year - allowing us to adjust or pivot as our fiscal year now matches our ministry season.
16
CIAL UPDATE LOOKING BACK We ended our abbreviated 2021 budget year (January-June 2021) as follows: Our budgeted expenses for six months were $3,621,244, while our actual six month expenses were $3,422,455. Our budgeted giving receipts totaled $3,567,800, while our actual giving receipts totaled $3,315,475 When compared to historic giving trends, our $106,980 deficit between actual expenses and actual giving was not unexpected and was absorbed into our overall financial structure, which is under the oversight and direction of our deacon team. The first half of 2021 also saw giving amounts up, appx. $200,000 over the same timeframe in 2020. Once again, thank you, Faith Church, for your continued faithful support and your recognition of God’s call to be good stewards of the gifts that He has given all of us.
L O O K I N G F O R WA R D While our church fiscal year has changed, we recognize many of us personally execute our home budgets (including our “giving”) from a calendar year perspective. We realize the end of the year is considered a time to reflect on adjusted giving or additional giving for all kinds of reasons including tax implications. Please know that even though our fiscal year will not end in December, your end of year giving is going to be crucial to our being able to meet our budget needs and thus our ministry funding. That hasn’t changed. Faith Church relies on both your faithful year-round giving as well as end of year adjustments and additions.
IT’S NOT JUST NUMBERS & SPREADSHEETS As a reminder, our 2021 / 2022 budget is $7,454,802 for the year (or $1,863,700 per quarter); that’s a significant amount for sure. It’s easy to look at a budget as mere numbers and spreadsheets, however, our hope is that you look at the budget for what it really is; it’s the tool that allows for the funding of ministry - so Celebrate Recovery can continue to change lives, so MomsNation is available as a resource, so children can worship at their level, so Reflectors can meet special needs, so missionaries locally and all over the world can bring the gospel to a world that needs it, so we can all gather over five campuses every weekend for meaningful, powerful, worship - and so much more. If you have any questions about Faith Church finances, please reach out to your campus deacons (WeAreFaith.org/leadership) or John Clausing at jclausing@WeAreFaith.org.

CEDAR LAKE PASTOR’S NOTE Welcome to Faith Church! You are among friends who are on the journey of life together. We are ordinary, average people who know that we are far from perfect. In fact, our imperfection unites us together in our need for transfor mation. We seek to be changed by Jesus, trusting that His grace is suficient for us. So, whatever your story is, wher ever you’ve come from, whatever your current circum stances, we welcome you to be a part of this community. It is my hope that you will encounter the power of God, the truth of His Word and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
There are so many ways to get connected at Faith Church and we would love to assist you in the process. There are groups that serve together, study the Bible together and live life together. Please don’t hesitate to ask for help in getting plugged in! We believe that spiritual growth happens in powerful ways when we are connected to the community of the church. When my family and I helped launch Faith Church-Cedar Lake in the fall of 2007, we didn’t know what to expect. The adventure has been life-giving and the body of Christ has been a tremendous blessing to us. I believe that you will experience that same blessing. I look forward to meeting you in person someday soon! May God bless you! Pastor Dave Weemho-
