Whether you’ve been attending Faith Church for a long time or you are a first time visitor, THE PAPER is here to help! Being a part of this church family is a partnership in growth, so we encourage you to be involved in 3 ways:
1 | WORSHIP ON THE WEEKENDS Gather with others to listen to a message from God’s Word, sing, pray and lift up the name of Jesus. Attend a service at one of our campuses. Faith Kids (infants5th grade) is a safe place where kids can worship Jesus at their level. Don’t miss the opportunity to gather with others and worship each week. Invite a friend.
2 | CONNECT IN COMMUNITY Being a follower of Jesus was never meant to be done alone. Sole-ranger Christianity usually means discouragement and failure. God has provided a better way--Biblical community. Community keeps us encouraged, helps us build meaningful friendships, and most importantly, helps us grow as Christians. This can be through a Mini-Church, Bible Study or Serving Team. No matter what your age, God does not intend for you to walk through life alone. Be real. Be known.
3 | SERVE OTHERS Join a weekend Serving Team at one of our campuses, serve in your neighborhood or around the world! God has gifted each of us to do something special. Discover the joy of serving.

WHAT ARE YOUR NAMES? Chris & Becky Ravesloot.
WHERE ARE YOU FROM? South Holland, IL.
HOW DID YOU FIRST GET CONNECTED TO FAITH CHURCH? I (Chris) became a member in March 2009 after attending for a while. I met Becky in 2010 and she started attending with me and became a member in January 2011. We really started connecting after we attended the Young Adults retreat in February 2016
WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN GOD DO AT FAITH CHURCH? We’ve seen people grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ; we’ve seen restoration and healing, and we see a community that isn’t perfect but that truly does care for one another in Christ.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT THE WORSHIP SERVICES? We enjoy the worship and the biblically-centered, sound teaching.
WHERE DO YOU SERVE AT FAITH CHURCH? We both serve in Pre-Marriage ministry and enjoy teaching couples about a God centered marriage. I (Chris) am the High School Youth Director here at our Dyer Campus and am actively involved in the Saturday morning Men of Faith ministry. Becky is currently on the steering committee for Mops (Dyer AM) and is on the wedding coordinating team. We both enjoy serving and helping wherever we can.
HOW DO YOU CONNECT WITH OTHERS AT YOUR CAMPUS? We connect through the groups that we are involved in and Wednesdays where we’ve gotten to know more people. We enjoy having others over for dinner so we can build and grow in relationship with our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ.
WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN GOD DO IN YOUR LIFE? We’ve seen God bring us closer together as a married couple; we’ve experienced healing and restoration as well as growth and acceptance all through His grace and mercy. When we’ve lived our family verse Proverbs 3:5,6 (which is easier said than done), we’ve seen God move in mighty, mysterious, and powerful ways. His bringing me (Chris) into the ministry position I’m currently holding as High School Youth Director is one of those “God Things”. He completely moved me and taught me more clearly what humility looks like and how to completely trust in Him. I’d love to share the story with anyone who is interested in hearing it.

Back in 2014 Faith Church embarked on the Reach Project, an initiative in which we were invited to give above and beyond our tithes to help support new programs that would reach people in our area through projects at our campuses (including a building for our Cedar Lake campus that is now packed with people!) and across the world in places like Brazil and the Dominican Republic. We mentioned a number of different projects happening in our last Reach Update, and this time we want to show you pictures so you can see the new signs at our Beecher Campus and our Highland Campus. At the time of this writing, remodeling is being done to the facilities at Faith Munster, so soon we should have photos of the revamped facility and the people worshipping there. Work also continues at the school in Brazil, and we hope to have pictures of its completion in the near future. For stories on what is happening in the Dominican Republic, we invite you to look at David Mojica’s report in this paper.
BEECHER CAMPUS
As of August 2017, we have received over $5.8 million of the $7.6 million that was pledged to be given between 2015-17. Once again, thank you for your faithful giving to the Reach Project, both those who made pledges and those who have given without a pledge. As we move towards the end of 2017 and, thus, the end of the Reach Project’s 3-year commitment, we want to encourage people to finish out their pledges so work can continue on the projects we still would like to do. A number of our campuses need to accommodate growth they have already experienced and make preparations for future growth. We also invite those who did not make pledges, who have come in the past three years, or who have already fulfilled their pledges to consider giving to this fund as God has blessed them. Lives have been changed through the Reach Project, and we know that more lives will be changed here in the coming months and years because of the generosity of the Faith Church community.

NO DISAPPOINTMENT GLOBAL LEADERSHIP SUMMIT 2017 BY: M A R I LY N M I L L E R
W • • • • •
hen my kids were small, whatever was “now” was the best – best vacation, best pizza, best birthday present. When I stood in the atrium and heard, “This was the best Summit ever,” I wondered if this was true, or just now. As Bill Hybels opened the two-day event, he expressed concern about the lack of civility in our society. He encouraged attenders to develop a “civility code of conduct” in their organizations, including:
Acknowledge one another Say please and thank you Treat each person equally and with respect Be direct, sensitive and honest Address incivility whenever it occurs
Hybels went on to challenge us to spend 15 minutes each morning reflecting on what God has done in our lives, setting the tone for the day. We were also encouraged to develop a “personal betterment plan, no matter our stage of life.” Many in the audience remembered the passing of Sheryl Sandberg’s husband a few years ago. Sandberg is the Chief Operating Officer of Facebook. She spoke about dealing with the horrible grief of losing her husband while parenting young children and having a major role in a large organization. One practice which helped her in those difficult days was this: “At the end of the day, write down three moments of joy. They can be as simple as my coffee tasted good.”
A FEW QUOTES “In our brokenness, we can understand redemption. Our character as a leader cannot be judged by how we treat the rich and powerful, but how we treat the poor and powerless.” Bryan Stevenson, Equal Justice Initiative “Do not be afraid. Everything can be undone by fear. Jesus knows this is the most powerful force standing between the disciples and doing what they have learned. . . The fear of failure in front of other people can be crippling.” Gary Haugen International Justice Mission “What is there to learn when we’re not unique anymore? We can still make things better, but not unique.” Andy Stanley, North Point Ministries.
PASTOR BOB’S PERSPECTIVE While he appreciated the rich content, Pastor Bob Bouwer’s favorite part was more than a speaker, more than a topic. “I find deep joy in seeing Faith Church put on such a great event,” he said. “It was two days of incredible serving in addition to weeks of preparation. Hosting the GLS has become an important part of Faith’s story, an example of how this congregation serves other so very well.” Faith Church has been a GLS host for 12 years. Initially Pastor Jason DeVries worked hard to convince Willow Creek that Faith could handle it. Three years in, Willow contacted Faith and said, “You guys are so efficient. You’ve proven you can handle this. From now on, just keep on doing what you’re doing. We’re very busy fixing problems with other sites, we know you can handle whatever comes along.” Quite a vote of confidence! Pastor Bob compared his experience attending the GLS this year to attending a Cubs game. “I’ve been at games and seen owner Tom Ricketts walking through the crowd a little like a proud grandpa, paying attention and being proud of how his workers are providing a great experience for those in attendance. I feel a little like Ricketts. I am so proud of the Faith team and the way they serve with excellence.” 9

HURTING MOMS NEED EACH OTHER! You are not alone. No one understands the pain of having a child who is making destructive decisions, disengaging from their family and disrespecting the values they have been taught like another hurting Mom. This community of moms is designed to be a safe place where moms can come together to share with one another while they work through a process that will bring them freedom and healing from their pain. Each HMMH group challenges members to grow in their relationship with Jesus as they learn to trust Him in the midst of their pain. The ultimate goal is for every Hurting Mom to learn to surrender their children to God, knowing He created them, loves them and has a plan for their lives.

I
grew up in a church where the word missionary provoked feelings of awe and inspiration. We heard reports from individuals from our church who had left the comforts of home to serve in a jungle village in a part of the world most of us had never heard of before. While we sat on our folding chairs listening to stories from our missionary guests as their slideshows clicked on, I couldn’t help but wonder, “Why would you choose this?” It seemed big, scary, and disconnected from the limited reality of the world I knew at that young age. But what if being a missionary wasn’t big and scary? What if it was something God calls all of us to? This fall we are going to go on a journey through a 5-week message series that will help redefine the term missionary. God has uniquely wired each of us with specific gifts to be used for His kingdom, and He asks us to live missional lives. We will explore ways God calls individuals into foreign missions, and we will meet some folks who are doing just that. We will also learn how individuals are getting creative in their work, in serving in public offices, and in reaching those from other countries who are right here in our back yard. We look forward to training and equipping all those who call Faith Church home to have gospel conversations with those we interact with each and every day. We believe God has called us to “restore the world one relationship at a time.” That means we each have a role to play in God’s kingdom story. Are you utilizing the gifts He’s given you for a grander purpose?
HOPE FOR TROUBLED MARRIAGES “Is our marriage over?” “Where can we go for help?” “We want to save our marriage, but we can’t get past . . .” Our goal at The Ravines? To show grace and hope for a better marriage with godly intensive counseling. Couples come to us from all over the country (35 states and counting) and even from outside the country. They come bruised, hurting, damaged and unsure of the future. Some come in shame; some come angry. “We describe our lives as ‘BR’ and ‘AR’ - before and after The Ravines,” says Sue from Florida.
ease,” where everyone in the church got their best. Couples stay for three-plus days and receive 15-18 hours of intensive counseling from our staff of professional Christian therapists. While with us they are served by a host couple. This is a volunteer couple who provides meals and coffee and models how a Christian man and wife relate to one another. They are key to what happens during the long weekend. We are also thankful for single hosts. “Our lives changed a year ago under your prayer and care,” says Dave from Ohio. “We are still together and no one is leaving!”
WE NEED YOUR HELP!
“No counselor has ever been able to break down my walls,” says Dan. “But our counselor wouldn’t let me walk away. Now I’m a better husband and can be a better father.”
Often when a marriage is in trouble, so is the bank account. Our army of volunteers helps to keep the cost down. And we subsidize each couple about $1,000. But it is still out of reach for many. We have a banquet in the spring where people are moved to contribute to the scholarship fund. About one-half of our couples need help. Another exciting way to help with scholarships is a Fun Run, taking place on Saturday, September 23 in Crown Point. Bring your family and have a day of fun, food and music while helping raise scholarship funds for The Ravines. Go to TheGivingGamesNow.org to register for The Ravines Team! We need your help.
Dan and Sue’s story is like the story of so many couples who come to The Ravines.
If you are in a troubled marriage or know of a couple who is struggling, please call for a confidential conversation.
“Our marriage was falling apart. We had tried counseling, church and separation,” adds Dan. “The Ravines was truly our ‘last hope.’” “We started over at The Ravines – we rededicated our marriage to God while we were there,” says Sue.
WHO IS THE RAVINES FOR? Many of our couples are in crisis – dealing with infidelity or some type of addictive behavior. Others have just lost one another in the busyness of life. They have prioritized work, kids, even church, and found there’s not much left for their marriage. One pastor described their malady as “mad church dis-
“We needed a breakthrough when we came – a re-set of sorts,” says Tim of Indianapolis. “We accomplished more in three days than in a decade of counseling.” (Not their real names) The Ravines - (219) 864-5063 www.TheRavines.org

arenting isn’t easy. From talking to parents who are trying to get sleep whenever they can get it, to watching a parent make their last shopping trip with their child who is leaving for college the next morning, I have learned that parenting is both challenging and humbling. We are constantly asking ourselves if we are doing it right, but I believe we all have the same end goal in mind as parents. We want our kids to love Jesus Christ with all their heart, soul, mind and strength. At Faith Church we have a plan to help make that end goal more likely for all parents. You may have heard about or noticed our color ORANGE. Two colors, red and yellow, blended together to make the color orange symbolize two influences, the church (yellow) and the home (red), coming together to fuel the faith of our kids. We need each other. In fact, when all is said and done about who has more influence on the faith of kids, moms and dads overwhelmingly outdo church ministries and programs. My kids thoroughly enjoy the ministries for them at Faith Church, but nothing beats a meaningful conversation about faith around a dinner table. Not that that happens every night, but when it does we want it to be significant and something we can all apply to our lives. Joni Eareckson Tada recently reminded us that being doers of the word changes lives for God’s glory. At Faith Church we want to give every family resources to help make that happen. I’ve spent almost my entire professional career researching how kids learn and reading more books on family than I care to admit. A simple amazon search for parenting books will yield over 70,000 results. Yikes! I’d like to offer just two resources that I trust and that have helped make faith at home easier for my family. If you haven’t yet downloaded the Parent Cue app, that’s a good place to start. This app has brief tips about how to make meaningful conversations take place. These can even take place on a car ride to that extra curricular activity! The Parent Cue app also has some of the video stories and lessons that we use from toddlers through high school in case you miss a weekend of worship. Another resource is called It’s Just a Phase, so Don’t Miss it. The Website is justaphase.com. Here you will find information and tips for every age, infants through seniors in high school. It offers emotional, physical, mental and spiritual insights into what our kids are going through and how to help them navigate life as well as how to help us engage with them. We will continue to have ministries where our children, young and old, can worship Jesus and find community at Faith Church. I hope these resources help your family love Jesus with all your heart, soul, mind and strength. Thanks for worshiping with us at Faith Church!

FAITH SANTO DOMINGO UPDATE BY: DAVID MOJICA The Lord is adding new people to our fellowship and the leadership base is growing and strengthening. We are taking advantage of the summer break and are engaging in street evangelism once and sometimes twice a week. Approximately 12 new people have given their hearts to Jesus in this outreach campaign that we have entitled, Casting the Nets.
that will be impacted. Continue to pray for us as we immerse ourselves in proclaiming the gospel boldly in different communities and enter the territory of the evil one by snatching from his grip the spiritually oppressed. We are in a spiritual warfare, but we are seeing the fruit of our labor, the oppressed set free, and God’s abundant protection and guidance. Grace and peace from Faith Church Santo Domingo.
The leaders are heavily involved in this effort, and they preach and pray for those coming up to receive Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. We are also increasing our leadership base from 7 to 11 or so with specific tasks. We also continue to disciple new believers and plan to baptize at least 6 disciples in the next 15 days. Our school outreach program through the arts is about to resume in the next two weeks, and we should be in three schools with a host of passionate volunteers. In one of these schools where we will engage children and families, we are planning and praying to launch our second Church campus before 2018. We have a couple on fire for God that we think would be a fit for this new Church plant site. In our stop at FC Dyer this summer, we presented a small movie clip with a detailed PowerPoint presentation of what God is doing through us and despite us in the Dominican Republic. There was great excitement of those gathered on our focused vision to plant four new churches at school sites by 2020. There was also renewed interest in planning a short mission trip to the Dominican Republic in the very near future. We are excited about this possibility and think that it would be a transformative experience for both the U.S. churches who will join and for the communities 21
