July 2013 “I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen. – Ephesians 3:16-21 This passage found in Paul’s letter to the Ephesians is one of my favorites, a powerful and inspirational reminder of the depth and power of God’s love and the wondrous and unlimited possibilities of God’s work in the world! My heart swells with excitement and anticipation and I get goose bumps every time I read it. Oh, how I long to be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God and to share this love that surpasses knowledge with others. I wonder where and in what ways God is going to show us that he can do more than we can ever ask or imagine next! As a Christian community, we are called into partnership with God. A partnership is defined as a relationship between individuals or groups that is characterized by mutual cooperation and responsibility for the achievement of a specified goal. Partnership is a community sharing a common focus with each member making some contribution. Faith UMC is charged with the responsibility of forming a partnership that exists to live out the mission of Christ (Matthew 28:16-20). Our congregation is blessed with the joy and privilege of serving the Lord together. This partnership is a precious gift. Part of the excitement of belonging to Christian community is trusting God as he calls us to partner with him in his work in the world. Often that means participating in what might seem impossible. I hope you find that exciting! We will not always know where God will lead us, but we are reminded that we can trust God because he is able to do far beyond all we could ever ask or imagine. Our partnership with God releases God’s miraculous power in us. As we become rooted and established in the love of Christ we are able to grasp the depth of this love and trust God as he leads us to do what might seem impossible. This summer our congregation is called to trust God and believe that he will do more than we could ever ask or imagine as we seek to reach out to families in our community as an Act of Grace through Faith’s Camp Read-A-Lot and Kingdom Rock VBS. We are trusting and believing as we plan and prepare small groups and Sunday school classes for this fall’s church-wide sermon and study series, The Story, so that children, youth, and adults might experience God’s word in fresh new ways! FIRST TUESDAY Happy summer! Please join us to worship God on Tuesday, July 2nd at 8 a.m. in the Chapel. Cindy Wilcox will be our presenter. Then on Tuesday, August 6th Jim Scott will share on the topic “Picture Stories.” Both of these knowledgeable individuals are rather new to our church, so a great turnout from all of you would be welcoming and affirming. Please join us every First Tuesday of the month for worship, prayer, and sharing. Many of us go out for breakfast afterwards. Get up and get going on the First Tuesday of each month. All are welcome!

Violeta Gimeniz-Lopez is one of the eight students sponsored by your contributions to our Pennies for Paraguay fund. She is 16 years old and in the 11th grade. Violeta’s goals this school year include studying more, getting better grades, and learning more about the Word of God. She has many friends and enjoys movies, comedy and music. She likes to draw and sing. When she grows up, she would like to study psychology and become a counselor. Violeta says, “Thank you for supporting me and my education. I always remember you and pray that God will bless you. I know God is the answer to any problem.” Please keep your contributions coming for this student and the others whom we sponsor.
The Quilt to Share group continues to meet throughout the summer on Tuesdays at the church in rooms 5 and 6. The hours are 9:00am to 11:30 am. We are currently working on crib quilts for the Aultman Hospital NICU. Anyone wishing to help make these quilts is welcome. Come join us !!!!!
The next meeting will be Thursday, July 11th at 2:00pm in the parlor. (Since the first Thursday falls on July 4th, we will meet on the second Thursday this month). Anyone who would like to help knit or crochet prayer shawls is welcome.

Are You Playing For Keeps With Your Words? We have all heard the old phrase, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” This old saying was taught to us, probably as children, as a means to deflect the negative words that others would say about us. However, as I quickly found out there was little truth to this statement as the negative words of others cut through me rapidly and altered my way of life. The most evident example that I can think of this occurring was during my sophomore and junior years of high school. Read the full story at http://refuge-faithumc.blogspot.com/ If you are struggling today with your words and wondering if they are making a difference, remember the words that authors Reggie Joiner and Kristin Ivy share in their book Playing for Keeps, “But even when you don’t know it, your words have the power to help kids and teenagers win” (p. 82). Your words have the ability to help your children/students win so take the time to learn another language, weigh your words carefully, and recycle the big ideas of others to have a greater impact. The lives of our children/students are extremely important so we need to be intentional about investing our words into their lives so we can direct their life in a positive direction that they will live out forever. We look forward to partnering with you and sharing in this discussion as we seek to impact the next generation with the combined influence of parents and the church!

Christ Caring for People through People! History of Stephen Ministries In 1975 Rev. Kenneth C. Haugk, Ph.D., a pastor and clinical psychologist, saw that people's needs for care in his congregation and community far exceeded what he alone could provide. He developed materials to train nine members of his congregation to provide quality, one-toone Christian care to individuals experiencing a life crisis. Inspired by Acts 6:1-7 in which Stephen is identified as one of the first laypeople set aside to do caring ministry, he commissioned these nine individuals as Stephen Ministers. They were linked with people with a variety of needs for care. "Stephen Ministry" was so successful in his church that other congregations wanted to become involved. Out of that humble beginning more than a quarter century ago there are now thousands of congregations with Stephen Ministry. More than 500,000 lay people representing 150 Christian denominations have been trained, who in turn have ministered to more than a million care receivers. We are very grateful to our leaders for their foresight and to our congregation for their support!

On Friday, July 19 at 12:00 p.m. we will be providing lunch for our VBS participants, volunteers and their families as a way of showing our appreciation to them for their service. This year, we are asking members of the congregation to help provide the luncheon. The Young Adult Ministry is a new group designed specifically for individuals who are of college age or young twenty-something professionals. Each week we will look at a current event or faith issue and explore how to apply our faith and belief in contemporary issues. We will also be using videos to guide us in looking at the world through a fresh and compelling look at the teachings of Jesus. In addition to these studies, we will have some social gatherings to allow us to get to know each other better and to reach out to potential new members for our group. Bailey Camp Scholarships! Congratulations to Tyler Bradley, Emily Jacobs, Angela Myers, and Liz Schoeppner, recipients of this year’s Bailey Camp Scholarship made possible through the Barbara Bailey Memorial Fund. A faith-based summer literacy program for kids entering grades K-3.
Wednesdays July 3, 10, 17 (VBS), 24, & 31; 10:00 am – Noon This summer our church will be filled with children! The families of over 100 children are interested in coming to Faith for Camp Read-A-Lot this summer! Praise God! Please pray for all involved as we launch this exciting new ministry! Volunteers are still needed to serve at Camp Read-A-Lot! Join us and share your love for reading by serving as a volunteer during Faith's summer literacy program. Volunteers are needed to serve as mentors to read & play games with children, interact with parents, serve as greeters, help with registration, help with snacks, assist with setting up & cleaning up learning stations, and prayer partners. Training will be provided. Themes and service projects: Each week children will experience a different theme and one of the learning stations will be a mission project in which children will practice literacy skills while learning and serving others! We Can Help Others, The Good Samaritan, Luke 10:30-37 Kids will make placemats for Kairos Prison Ministry and a local nursing home. We Can Help by Listening and Following Directions, The Walls of Jericho - Joshua 6:1-27 Kids will pack health kits for UMCOR. We Can Take Care Of The Earth, Creation-Genesis 1:1 -2:1 Kids will be making dog bones for a local animal shelter. We Can Share What We Have, Five Loaves & Two Fishes, Mark 6:30-34 Kids will make cards for children for Faith Kitchen’s Backpack Ministry Donations of children’s books, beginning readers, & monetary donations are greatly appreciated! A Reflection on Theological Worlds As FUMC begins its worship and study series on ‘The Story’, learning about theological worlds will help us appreciate and understand better how different people engage and interpret scripture. This will also help us appreciate God’s story at work in each of our own stories. I had the pleasure of attending an orientation about theological worlds on June 9th with Pastor Steve and others from the congregation. Not only was it interesting and fun to find out how I am likely to view and engage in learning and participating as part of Faith Church, but I became more self-aware of how I can interact and grow within our church and with others who are just like me and others who are not like me at all. It is less relevant that we are different in our perspectives and more relevant that we appreciate those differences as we grow together as a body of Christ. Faith UMC has a strong desire to focus on nurturing family relationships through faith. This fall, we invite any adult couples (engaged, newly married or seasoned marriages) and single parents to come join us for a short program focusing on nurturing family relationships, followed by an evening of childcare (ages birth-6th grade) while you enjoy some time to yourselves to focus on the relationships in your life.
Sharing Your Story
The experience is being created so that all are welcome- couples and single parents, with or without children. The children who participate will have an evening with fun activities including games and activities designed to help children grow in their faith. This ministry provides families with a specific time to set aside to nurture your relationships… whether that be with a spouse, yourself or with God.
This fall we will be exploring a church-wide sermon and study series called The Story. We’ll be getting to the heart of God’s story as we experience the Bible as one continuing story of God and His people. We are looking for people willing to share their story through a weekly devotion based on each week’s scripture. If you have a passion for writing and are willing to share how you experience God’s story, please contact Kathy Schmucker for more information.
