April 2013 What Now?

A Note from the Staff Parish Relations Committee

You have turned my mourning into dancing; you have taken off my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, so that my soul This summer Pastor Cara will be taking a may praise you and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give spiritual renewal leave. A spiritual renewthanks to you forever. – Psalm 30:11-12 al leave is an important part of maintaining a focus, commitment, passion, and By the time most of you read this, Easter Sunday will be over and skill for ministry. A time apart encourages April will have begun. What now? a person to rest, renew, and clarify vision The past six weeks in Lent have been focused on prayer and other for life and work. practices to ground us anew in the Christian faith. Together we journeyed with Christ to Jerusalem. We witnessed his death on a cross and our voices combined in Hallelujahs on Easter. What now? Liturgically speaking, now is just the beginning of Easter. Indeed Easter is a 50 day season that leads us to the birth of the church on Pentecost (May 19). Seasonally speaking, now is when we anticipate warmer weather, more sunshine and the return of song birds, flowers and foliage. For Indians fans, now is the beginning of a new baseball season. I have to admit, now that I have lived in Ohio for 12 years since moving from Virginia, I have come to appreciate spring in a whole new way. For Ohioans, now is when we come out of hibernation to converse with neighbors, take a walk or take part in a host of warmer weather outside activities. What now? Spiritually speaking, now, in all of its facets, is a gift. In light of the resurrection, in light of the Easter Good News, now is all about new life. Now is an opportunity to be filled with joy, to embrace life, to share with friends, to love and be loved. Now is the hope of forgiveness and reconciliation offered and received. Now is the time to rejoice, praise, sing, serve and worship the God who gave everything so that we might truly live. Because of Easter, now is Good News! May this Good News be made known in and through each of us now as we see and recognize this Good News working in and through others. Sincerely,

It is important to know that Cara's spiritual renewal leave is part of a healthy process to encourage her focus on God and family and not a leave of absence or a sabbatical. A spiritual renewal leave is available to clergy members who have held full-time appointments for a least six years and this will be Cara's first spiritual renewal leave. Cara's spiritual renewal leave has already been approved by our district superintendent, Rev. Benita Rollins, the Staff Parish Relations Ministry Team and the Church Board. The United Methodist book of discipline approves a leave of up to six months. Cara will not be taking a six month leave, she will be taking a six week leave beginning June 23 and she will be returning August 18. Pastor Steve will be handling Cara's church responsibilities with help from retired clergy in the congregation. If you have any questions please contact myself or Pastor Cara. Thank you,

Pastor Steve

Meet Nathaly Sanchez Urunde, one of the students you support with your donations to Pennies for Paraguay. Nathaly is 13 years old and is beginning the 9th grade. She lives with her parents, Gloria and Gerardo, and her baby brother, Amir. She prayed for a dozen years for a brother! Nathaly says that she likes math and English classes. She would like to study psychology and journalism after high school. As a child, she pretended to be the host of television and radio programs. Last fall, Nathaly enjoyed camping with her class, getting closer to God and her classmates. The class also worked hard to raise money to visit the country’s largest hydroelectric dam. Here are Nathaly’s own words of gratitude to you: “I am very grateful to you for the tremendous support you give me in my education. I’m always looking forward to tomorrow, to becoming a professional. God bless you very much for the beautiful action of giving me the opportunity to have a very good education. I promise not to disappoint you.” God bless you, Nathaly!

Are you looking to help revitalize a local community? On June 1st, Faith UMC will be participating in the Community Outreach Of Love (or C.O.O.L.) Neighborhood Revitalization Project. We will be doing a variety of projects from yard work and outdoor house repairs (moving, planting flowers, mulching, repairing porches, etc.). Lunch will be provided along with a concert in a nearby park afterwards! Join us as we facilitate a physical and spiritual impact in the community. Contact Karen Truett if you are interested in getting involved in this summer’s Service in Mission church-wide project.

There are numerous ways in which Faith United Methodist Church offers prayer ministry. We have an emergency prayer chain that is sent by email or by phone; a weekly prayer list that is available by email or by hard copy at various locations in the church; verbal prayers lifted up during weekly worship services; and, prayer that is private through pastors and church staff. We are aware that privacy can be a concern when prayer requests are made using a person’s name and details about the concern. We ask that you please be careful and get permission from the person or family whose name you would like to raise in prayer. You may ask them:  How can Faith Church be in prayer for/with you?  How would you like the prayer request to be communicated? Emergency prayer chain, weekly prayer list, during Sunday worship, or through private prayer  How would you like the prayer worded? God knows your need, so details, even names, aren’t always necessary. If you would like to add your name to our emergency email prayer chain or the weekly prayer list, let Lauralee Stiffler know (330.499.6040 ext. 13 or lstiffler@faithumchurch.org). Please call the church office with any prayer requests. You may also submit prayers on our church website.

Wrestling with the Tough Stuff in our Lives Throughout my life there have been numerous times when my temper has gotten the best of me. I have always known that my Irish blood runs deep and many times that leads to a short fuse and a temper that is difficult to control. I would like to say that through the years, my temper has subsided and “gets the better of me less,” but the opposite is true. As a Christian, I have found that as we attempt to get certain areas “under control” the enemy tempts us even more in those areas. Rather than finding ourselves gaining more control of those areas, with God’s help, we find ourselves struggling more and more with these issues. As I was recently reflecting upon this issue in my life, a couple of situations arose that made me examine this area more closely. Read the full story at http://refuge-faithumc.blogspot.com/ If you are struggling with something today I challenge you to reflect upon the words that Paul wrote to the church at Philippi, “Don’t worry about anything, but in everything through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses every thought, will guard your hearts and minds in minds in Christ Jesus. Finally brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable-if there is any moral excellence and if there is any praise-dwell on these things. Do what you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you” (Philippians 4:6-9).

Youth Mission Trip News: As our students prepare for their mission trip to Rockford, Illinois in the summer of 2013 they have already started earning their service/fundraising hours during the past few months. We have had students participate through:  Helping through assistance with children’s Sunday School classes  Serving at Crystal Park Soup Kitchen  Assisting with the cookie walk  Performing a dance program in nursing homes for the residents  Tutoring/mentoring younger students  Our students are always looking for opportunities to serve others throughout the year. If you know of a service opportunity, feel free to contact Susan Arnold (sarnold@faithumchurch.org) or Donny Bell (donnybell@gmail.com) or Matt Hart (mhart@faithumchurch.org). Thank you for your partnering with this life-changing ministry!

We would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to Sharyl Syler and Jan Bilek in recognition of their outstanding organization and work which was reflected in our recent audit. We are so blessed to have you on our team!

There is a look of spring in the library and on the library’s bulletin board. Come in and see what is new. Find a book that you haven’t yet read. There is something for everyone - Bible Study, devotions, fiction, non-fiction, history, biography, UMW reading program, reference, cook books, knitting, quilting, CD’s and DVD’s. What might you discover? More children and young adult books are on their way. You could be the first to check a brand new book out!

We always welcome volunteers and suggestions. Thanks for supporting Faith UMC’s library!

News from the Worship & Arts Study Group The Worship and Arts Study Group continued its work in February by visiting 5 other UM churches in the annual conference that are similar in size and makeup to our own church. In addition, we looked at two UM mega churches which might have helpful information for us. We shared our finding in our March meeting and decided to invite Dr. Lisa Withrow to come and resource us by leading up in a discussion of different “theological worlds” which may help us understand the different needs and expectations people bring to the worship experience. Lisa will be with us on Sunday, April 14 during morning worship and leading a discussion following the 3rd Service in Robinson Hall.

All church members are invited to attend this 1 1/2 hour session with Lisa. Lunch will be provided so let the church office know if they are planning to attend.

Friday, April 5, 2013: Spaghetti Dinner The boys from Troop 12 would like to invite you, your family, and all the friends you can find to join us for a delicious spaghetti dinner that will be a fundraiser for Camperships for the boys who are involved in the evening’s festivities. “Camperships” help fund various scouting campouts throughout the year, making it more affordable for the scouts to attend. Dinner Served: 5 – 7:00 pm; Location: Family Life Center; Cost: $5.00 Please enter into the building from the WEST door. Hope to see everyone there! Scout Sunday - February 3, 2013 We celebrated the 103 year of Boy Scouts of America! Many of our boys attended, and Scout Master, Mark Staib, was presented with the Joe Reisierer Adult Leadership Award. This award was given by the boys to the leader who had gone above and beyond their regular responsibilities to influence their scouting journey over the past year. Our thanks go out to Darin Hinderer for organizing this annual day of recognition; once again, it was his flawless organization and management that made the day flow so smoothly. Pancake Breakfast - February 10, 2013 Our first pancake breakfast of the year was attended by many of our faithful friends here at FUMC. Thank you so much! Your donations are greatly appreciated and you were very generous. The breakfast of pancakes, sausage, and drinks was a fundraiser for our summer 2013 High Adventure Trip. We will be spending ten beautiful days on the Gulf side of the Florida Keys in sailing ships. We will be learning to work together as a cohesive team, snorkeling, fishing, swimming and of course, THE most important thing – resting up - before we begin another hectic year of school and scouting. Winter Campout - February 15 – 17, 2013 Fifteen boys and adults spent the weekend on a winter campout at Butler Campground and Brandy Wine Ski Resort. The snow was good all weekend and we brought all the scouts back with no injuries! It had to happen sooner or later. Finally, Sunday morning Cameron Kovacs lead our church service near the beautiful Brandywine Falls. Rice’s Gift Cards – Now Available! We have Rice’s Gift Cards available for anyone who has outdoor landscaping plans planned for the upcoming spring and summer months. The cards are $25.00 each and Rice’s gives the scout troop $5.00 back for every card sold. The cards may be used toward any purchase in the Garden Center at Rice’s Nursery on 55th St NE. If you have any questions or would like to purchase a card or two contact your favorite scout.

If you fit in one or more of these categories, we’d love to have you join our Garden of Weedin’ team! We grow tomatoes and peppers in a small plot of earth on the west end of the church property. Gardeners help turn the soil, plant, and then sign up for a week to water, weed, and harvest. In September, we use the frozen vegetables to can jars of salsa. We welcome new members to the team. We will train new gardeners! If you would like to join in this satisfying and meaningful endeavor, contact Trudy Jones by phone (330.494.4723) or email (Trudy@neo.rr.com). Videos in Worship We have truly appreciated everyone’s feedback in regards to the addition of occasional videos to our Sunday Morning Worship. Because of the resounding support, we will continue to utilize videos once and awhile during the 9:45 and 11:00 services. In an effort to allow for different styles of worship we will refrain from its addition during the 8:30 service. Thanks!
