September 2013 I had a renewing summer. It was a summer of “falling in love” again – with God, with my call to ministry, with the Church, with Steve, with the boys. And so, I am full of life – the life that is reborn and renewed through the gift of the resurrection in Jesus! I’ve always said that “the joy in returning is directly related to the joy of the experience of being away.” I am full of joy to be returning to the work of ministry at Faith. We have a lot of exciting ministry happening this fall. Below are a few to put on your radar:

September 8, 2013, Rain or Shine! Collective Worship @ 10:30 am Potluck and concert by Chip Richter to follow!

The Story – a worship and study experience beginning September 15! A condensed and chronological journey through the Bible. Come along on a 31-Week journey to discover how your story fits into God’s story. September 2013 through May 2014 As a church, our goal is to know God’s story and to see where our story fits into his. The Story is a church-wide journey for all ages, helping each of us connect more with God through scripture. It will also unify us as a church since every man, woman, student, and child will be invited in. We are excited to see all that God will do in us, in our church, and in our community as we explore The Story. May the joy of Jesus be yours this day and always.

Most of us know full well what we should do to guard our health, but we live in such a crazy world that staying on track can be a real challenge. Sometimes hearing a new approach or a gentle reminder of why it's so very important to keep moving and learning is just what's needed. Dr. Aaron and Meghan McMichael (from the McMichael Chiropractic Natural Health & Wellness Clinic in Canton) join us in September to share their take on the elements of a healthy lifestyle. Date: Tuesday, September 10th Time:11:45 am to 2:00 pm Cost of the meal: $4/person Program: Dr. Aaron & Meghan McMichael, Building a Healthy Lifestyle Please call or email Betsy Douce with your reservation (330.494.3337 or BetsyDouce@yahoo.com) no later than Thursday, September 5th.

Women of Faith United Methodist Women sent out 49 pairs of glasses to Glasses for Masses – a missionary effort. Thank you so much!

Canton Calvary Mission requests for September Canned Fruit The Mission feeds over 500 families monthly and appreciates all donations of non-perishable foods, personal hygiene and paper products. A marked box is located in the gallery for contributions to the Food Pantry. Thanks for your generous support!

Campbell soup label collection is way down. Please remember that the box is in the Gallery off the Gathering Area and all labels are encouraged!

What a difference a month makes! In mid-July, we had about $700 in our fund, but now we have almost $3,500! Here’s what happened: The Vacation Bible School offering was $784, including a very successful car wash by the 5 th and 6th graders.  A VERY generous anonymous donor matched, indeed exceeded the VBS offering with a gift of $850. That’s enough to pay for two of our eight students.  Your gifts on VBS Sunday totaled over $600!  The daughter of members donated $250.  Many of you continue to bring in your coins on a regular basis, and they really add up. As a result, I believe our church can sponsor a NINTH student in the year 2014. We would only need $300 more by next January, less than $30 a week in donations for the balance of the year. We are thankful for your generosity so far, and know this congregation is up to the challenge. Praise God that we can be a blessing to these young people! Pray for them! 

Prayer Shawl Ministry: The next meeting will be Thursday, September 5th at 2:00 in the church parlor. Anyone who would like to help knit or crochet prayer shawls is welcome. The Quilts to Share group would like to thank the “summer people” for their help this summer. This group meets on Tuesdays at the church in rooms 5 and 6. The hours are 9:00am to11:30 am. We are currently working on crib quilts for the Aultman Hospital NICU. Anyone wishing to help make these quilts is welcome. Come join us!!!!! Ever wondered about Faith Kitchen? Each month Faith United Methodist Church provides an opportunity for those in need to come and have a meal, some time of worship, and a chance to receive bags of groceries. Get involved in this ministry—a tangible way to share the love and grace of God. We are looking for volunteers to help in the grocery distribution area of Faith Kitchen along with other areas! What the Cowardly Lion Taught Me About Leadership Have you ever watched a movie or read a book and just resonated with one of the characters. Over the years there have been several characters that have connected with my heart and drawn me into the story they represent, however there is one that simply stands heads and shoulders above the rest. As a child I remember watching The Wizard of Oz and connecting with one of the characters in this beloved story which was the cowardly lion. I could never figure out why I was drawn to this particular character until several years later when I realized that I needed more courage. This may come as a surprise to some as I am willing to ride any roller coaster, try new food whenever I get the chance, and do things that could make others cringe. However, my need for courage is rooted in a deep internal struggle that I have which is the “fear of failure.” I have always wondered, “What if I try something and it doesn’t work?” or “What if this new idea flops and leaves people feeling disappointed?” The fear of failure is something that I believe is not exclusive or unique to me but is a point of tension with every leader. Read the full story at http://refuge-faithumc.blogspot.com/ Brad outlines five principles for us to help us become courageous leaders: Set scary standards - Give your people a goal that scares them, and you’ll produce leaders who know what it means to overcome fear. Allow for failure Reward innovation – Innovation requires taking risks. And bold risks create bold team members. Rewarding innovation will challenge your team to grow in their roles. Pursue the right opportunities – Aggressively pursue a few things that make sense. Say no often. Learn to delegate – Entrust others with important tasks by letting go and relinquishing control. If you want your team to be courageous, give them the chance to lead. As you work through implementing these ideas into your leadership style remember this quote from former South African president Nelson Mandela, “Courage is not the absence of fear-it’s inspiring others to move beyond it.” So as you move through your day today what would you pursue if you weren’t afraid to fail?

STEWARDSHIP Can you, or for that matter, can anyone list the many ways Faith UMC touches the lives of people in God’s community? You – the members of Faith UMC – do so much for so many. Thousands of hours of service and hundreds of skills all used to benefit and serve people in both our local community and the world wide community. The time, talents, and money of Faith UMC – your time, talent, and treasure are used in countless ways to share God’s grace with many, many people. This past year has been a great year filled with examples of sharing with others and doing God’s work. Bible School, Faith Kitchen, mission work near and far, and handmade crafts are but a very few examples of how Faith UMC serves God by serving others. Look for more examples of how Faith UMC serves our congregation and others during the fall stewardship campaign. Learn more of what Faith UMC does with your generous gifts of treasure, talent, and time to make Faith UMC so successful in spreading God’s love and grace. Stewardship Ministry Team

TROOP 12 UPDATE August 3 A big “thank you” to the 21 boys and 13 adults who kept the streets of Canton neat and clean during the Hall of Fame Parade! These folks braved the early morning and rainy conditions to form the annual Troop 12 Pooper Scooper Patrol. Two of our wonderful scouts, who were hard at work, were even photographed and had their picture printed in The Repository. Way to go and represent us well to the whole community! August 4 Troop 12 had the opportunity to be represented again during the Hall Of Fame festivities at the football game between the Cowboys and the Dolphins. As a fundraiser for our trip to Sea Base in Florida, 23 boys and adults gathered for halftime and the second half of the game to pass out NFL sticker books to the football fans in attendance. August 11-18 As a year of preparation and anticipation neared, 36 scouts and adult leaders excitedly embarked on their much awaited trip to the Florida Keys on our Sea Base High Adventure trip. Three crews enjoyed snorkeling, fishing, sailing, a luau, and fun in the sun as they experienced the wonders of God’s beautiful ocean. Thank you for your prayers for their safe travels during this wonderful adventure. August 23-25 Our August campout took place at Seven Ranges Reservation where our scouts participated in a weekend of Hunger Games. It was a fun weekend after beginning the first few days of the new school year earlier in the week! September 13-15 Once again, our good friends at Rice’s Farm will host our September campout which will highlight our Cub Scout Expo. If anyone knows of an area cub scout that would like to join us in a fun weekend of scout activities at the farm, Scott Hess can be contacted for more information and details. Please leave your name and number at (330)498-0517, and a call will be promptly returned.

Since the start of the Christian Church, Christians have gathered in large groups and in small groups for discipleship, fellowship, worship, faith sharing, & ministry. (Acts 2: 46-47) 7.
