Living Faith

MESSAGE

A few years ago, I heard for the first time the famous true story about Jean François Gravelet, more commonly known as Charles Blondin. On June 30, 1859, Blondin walked 160 ft above Niagara Falls on a tightrope 1,100 feet long. He did so several times each time more remarkable – blindfolded, on stilts, pushing a wheelbarrow loaded with a sack of potatoes. The thrilled crowd cheered with amazement. Blondin asked the crowd if they believed he could cross again with a person in the wheelbarrow. The fans yelled back, “Yes, we believe.” Then Blondin asked for a volunteer to get in the wheelbarrow. No one volunteered. This story is often used to illustrate the d ifference between belief and faith. As Christians, our belief in God continually draws us into faith in God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Faith involves action, taking a risk, placing our lives in God’s hands. Our faith grows through relationship initiated by Jesus of Nazareth, moves to action inspired by the Holy Spirit and unites us in God’s mission to redeem the world. The motto of Faith United Methodist Church is “A journey into faith; learning, loving, leading.” In this 2nd publication of “Living Faith”, we see the church living its faith. Pictures, testimonies, diagrams and figures tell the story of faith in action in 2013 at Faith UMC. Each page celebrates acts of grace, our 2013 theme, through ministry teams and new initiatives. The theme for 2014, adopted by the Church Board, is “Seeing Christ, Being Christ”. In “Living Faith” we see Christ and seeing Christ inspires us to participate in being Christ. Do you believe that God can and will do amazing things in and through the people of Faith UMC in 2014? Vacation Bible School VBS is an opportunity for kids at Faith Church and from the community to join in Stories, Music, Games, Mission, Snacks, Experiential Activities all focused on learning about Christ. The program is an Act of Grace provided to all at no cost. My favorite God Sighting was of a little girl who dipped her hands in the pool of God’s Love and kept her hands cupped as she left the room so she could take God’s love with her! The joy, love and learning is as big a gift to those who participate and Christian help as it is for the kids!

Faith’s Camp Read-‐A-‐Lot is a literacy program whose mission is to enrich the lives of children and support families by providing literacy resources and volunteers to cultivate a love of reading and development of reading skills in a caring, Christian environment. The goals of the program include: •

Adult Faith Formation & Discipleship The walk to Emmaus is an experience of Christian spiritual renewal and formation that begins with a three-‐day short course in Christianity. It is an opportunity to meet Jesus Christ in a new way as God’s grace and love is revealed to you through other believers. The objective of Emmaus is to inspire, challenge, and equip the local church members for Christian action in their homes, churches, communities and places of work. Wednesday Night Faith Connections Wednesday Night Faith Connections is a midweek program at Faith UMC that provides fellowship and faith formation opportunities for children and adults. The Wednesday night dinner operates on a shoestring. The week before Thanksgiving we were down to $30.00 for the rest of the year. I handed Kathy a bill for over $300.00 for our Thanksgiving meal. She got nervous about where we would get the funds, but she said, “God will provide.” Just before the dinner, she received $500.00 to cover us through the end of the year. Faith UMC has a strong desire to focus on nurturing family relationships through faith. This year, we invite any adult couples (engaged, newly married or seasoned marriages) and single parents to come join us for a short program focusing on nurturing family relationships, followed by an evening of childcare (ages birth-‐6th grade) while you enjoy some time to yourselves to focus on the relationships in your life.

Young Adult The Young Adult group was formed out of a desire to have a Bible study with others who are around the same age. This group includes anyone who is in college or starting out their careers. Although our main focus is studying the Bible, we also have fun nights where we get to know each other better in a more relaxed setting. The Young Adult group was launched in May 2013 and has been going strong ever since. Topics studied this past year include Faith Links, which are a different topic each week related to a current issue; Coffeehouse Theology, which is an in-‐depth study of what we believe and why; and The Story, following along with the church. God has taken our dream of having a group designed for this age group and allowed it to grow into an active ministry. We are very grateful for the support of the church. We are so excited about our group and we hope God will allow our group to continue to grow.

Stephen Ministry Stephen Ministry is a ministry that trains laypersons to be caring and supportive care givers to people who are going through some of life’s difficult situations. People wishing to be a Stephen Minister undergo fifty hours of training to prepare for that responsibility and commit to two years of service.

WAYS TO GET INVOLVED

Stephen Ministry continues to grow at Faith Church. Currently we have twenty-‐two trained Stephen Ministers and leaders. We meet twice a month for ongoing training and supervision. At this time we have a majority of our current Stephen Ministers involved with a care receiver. Anyone interested in becoming a Stephen Minister may contact any current Stephen Minister or call the church office for additional details.

I am privileged to be a newer member of the Stephen Ministry team, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have served in this wonderful outreach ministry in the past year. We have grown so much through our extensive training to learn how to best understand and reach out in Christian love and compassion to others experiencing various difficult situations, as well as supporting one another. We know we cannot take the place of professional caregivers, or God, who is our ultimate “caregiver,” but we can listen when others have stopped listening and give confidential Christian support and encouragement as we walk with another through life’s challenging circumstances. If you are facing a difficult time in your life, I hope you will consider contacting the Stephen Ministry team. We would be honored to listen and pray, share your burden, and lighten your load.

Membership Care

United Methodist Women I was invited to attend a UMW Circle meeting during a difficult time in my life. My daughter and I were made to feel so welcomed. I love the fact that UMW supports women and children globally, nationally, locally and even right here at Faith Church. When Kevin was moved to Minnesota in July, I was more overwhelmed than I thought possible. The love and support from this group of women has been amazing. This same love and support they have shown Amanda and I is also evident in all the work they do in supporting all women and children. A few examples are: donating toiletries to The Domestic Violence Center, making up Mother's Day baskets for a low income elementary school so a child has a gift for their mom, sending care packages to our college students to remind them they are loved by their church family. I know God had a plan when we were invited to attend UMW. I feel truly blessed to belong to this group of amazing women!

Helping Hands Before my wife passed away, I had to find something to combat my depression. Therefore, I volunteered to drive people from our church to their doctor, dentist, and various treatments they needed. I had been driving Joan Pontius for over a year. At Glenda’s funeral , Randy, Joan’s son-‐in-‐law, came to me and thanked me for my help with Joan. I found out that he had been doing everything for her and raising two teenagers and working full time as a T.I. at the hospital. This was the time I realized how much this meant to everybody. It is very rewarding to be able to give back. I now have several regular people and I really enjoy the interaction.

Gift of Music was started in September 2011 to minister to senior members of Faith UMC and those dealing with health issues, by sharing hymns and favorite songs from the past. We may honor a birthday by visiting in the person’s home or have seasonal birthday gatherings at the church with communion. In 2012 the Gift of Music trio was formed: Pam Wig on guitar and song leader, Dale Walters on harmonica, and Sue Wheeler on harp or hammered dulcimer. The trio has performed at: Windsor Center, Waterford, Canton Christian Home, Danbury, and Second Wind events. In addition there have been visits to: Woodlawn Rehab Center, Lydia Circle, Rebecca Circle, Faith Circle, and Lebolds’ Christmas dinner for widows. Several times a year, Gift of Music reaches out into the community or responds to requests and has shared at: Aultman Compassionate Care Center, Chapel Hill Nursing Home, Laurels of Canton, and North Canton Y’s Senior Social. Sometimes a CD of well-loved hymns played on the harp has been given to individuals with serious health issues, who are not up to visitors.

Second Wind Second Wind is a ministry group, which focuses on planning activities and events for the senior citizens of our congregation on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. Most events include a time of fellowship, lunch, and a guest speaker on special topics. Serving as coordinator for Second Wind has blessed me with a sense of belonging (both to our church and to our group), fellowship and usefulness within Faith Church. Ministry Team Overview

Boy Scouts The Boy Scout and Cub Scout program are alive and well here at Faith United Methodist Church! In fact, the Scouting program charted at Faith Church will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year. Over 170 young men and adult leaders participate in Troop 12 and Pack 12 activities during the year. Cub Scouts enjoy their annual Blue and Gold Banquet along with the Pine Wood Derby, Father /Son Cake Bake and canoeing and biking events. Cubs also march in North Canton’s annual Memorial Day parade and sing Christmas Carols and bake cookies for the residents at a local Senior Citizen Center during the Christmas season. The Boy Scout Troop is equally as active with camping events scheduled every month that include our local Boy Scouts Camps as well as other hiking and canoeing opportunities, including an annual skiing weekend. Five young men achieved the rank of Eagle Scout this past year with the Troop. We also sent a contingent of Scouts and adult leaders to the Sea Base facility in Florida this past summer and will send another contingent to the Northern Tier Boundary waters in Minnesota this summer. Both Cubs and Scouts also participate in annual summer camp activities. We are grateful of the support Faith United Methodist Church has provide these past 50 years to the Scouting program and look forward to many more years of support.

Run to Resurrection The Run to Resurrection is an exceptional experience for a runner. First I found my mind to be receptive when I get up early the morning before Easter. Each turn is punctuated by cheering volunteers with one on the seven sentences Christ spoke on the Cross and since the course is just over a mile you run it three times. Since I don't run often, the turns made the run more manageable for me and going through the seven sentences three times as my fatigue increased made them even more powerful.

Service in Mission

The Service in Mission Ministry Team is devoted to developing a year-‐round program of education in support of domestic and foreign missions. We work to uncover community concerns and encourage the congregation to become involved, serving as a mission liaison within and beyond the local congregation. We promote opportunities for enlistment of qualified persons to apply for service as missionaries and we make certain the congregation is aware of the financial needs of missions. 2013/2014 Chair Karen Truett

Ministry Team Overview

Flat Rock Quilt Auction Quilts to Share This fun spirited group of ladies who gather together to make beautiful quilts are passionate about the quilts they make. Our focus is sharing our quilts with those who need to know someone cares about them. Quilts to Share started 17 years ago with ladies from our church joining sewers and quilters from James S. Thomas United Methodist Church in Canton. Sewing machines were donated, as was the fabric. This past year we delivered quilts to a VA hospital in Cleveland, The Pines nursing home in Canton, Aultman Hospital, and the Domestic Violence Shelter. The quilts for Aultman Hospital were made in children’s prints and given to the NICU. They were used to cover the preemies in the isolettes then given to the parents as a keepsake. The quilts to the VA Hospital were “shared” prior to Veteran’s Day and given to 30 vets. This quilt ministry is certainly a labor of love for the sewers and quilters of our church.

A Community Christmas Community Christmas consists of four sub components: Adopt a Family, Giving Tree, Coats for Christmas, and Distribution. Approximately 1200 families in need are interviewed in October of each year. Approximately 550 families are selected for Adopt a Family, 30 of which are adopted by Faith Church. The remaining 700 families are selected for Distribution where each family is given toys, stocking stuffers, stuffed animals, used toys and books, Christmas decorations, and clothing. The Giving Tree names come from area agencies, including preschools and nursing homes, and individuals are selected for $25 worth of gifts. Finally, Coats for Christmas is a collection of new and gently used coats for distribution at Canton Calvary Mission.

Faith Kitchen I started helping on Cheryl Froelich’s soup kitchen team probably about 10 years ago. Cheryl’s team provides a hot meal before the families go to the gym and get groceries. If they were in need of clothing that service is also offered. I always work the drink and dessert room and for all these years Maxine Pierce (and Judy Tewsbury before she passed away) makes a famous pineapple cake. Even though Maxine is unable to come and help cut cakes and serve she will call me to come and pick up her cake when she is able to do one. Every month someone is always asking “where is that pineapple cake,” and if we don’t have it we have a very sad customer. ~M.J. Moody

Barbara Whitacre Prayer Shawl Ministry We are a dedicated group who joyfully meet one time/month to knit, crochet, laugh, love, and share! Our shawls are given to persons who need comfort or in celebration. Don't have to be an expert or even know how to knit or crochet-‐-‐ lessons, yarn, and needles are shared freely! One of our shawls has given comfort to four different people who have gone through chemotherapy. It has been passed on from friend to friend with much love!

C.O.O.L. (Community Outreach of Love) C.O.O.L. (Community Outreach of Love) is the result of a vision to bring together various local churches and businesses in unity to serve people. This is an opportunity to reach out to people and places other than those in our own churches and communities. This past June 1, a group of people from Faith Church joined 1700 other Christians to fulfill the vision of helping others by revitalizing homes and spirits in the Tremont neighborhood in Massillon. We dug and planted, trimmed trees and bushes, and painted porches. We met with the people who lived in the houses we were assigned and brought to them the spirit of Christ. Their community park was brought back to life for the children and residents of the area. We hope our impact will be felt by these people and our participation has helped bring them closer to God. “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:16 ~Karen Truett

The Missions Ministry is u nique in that it has very little budgeted expense, b ut as you can see from the chart above, we are able to give substantially to our missions through the generous donations of our parishioners above the budgeted needs. Over $17,000 was raised at the Flat Rock Quilt Auction hosted by Faith UMC (Flat Rock’s b est year ever!) Over 1200 families were assisted during the Christmas season through A Community Christmas. Not only do we support this ministry with our gifts and monetary donations, b ut we also have dozens of members who volunteer and help make this ministry possible in our community. Countless dozens of prayed over cookies were distributed to the inmates who participated in the Kairos Prison M inistry. 30 lap quilts were made and donated to Vets at the VA Hospital. 80 Brew Biscuit kits were sewn and delivered to the women at Camphor Mission, Liberia. 75 hats and scarves were made for Faith Kitchen for those in need.

WAYS TO GET INVOLVED

The Worship/Arts Vision Team is the result of a year- long study and reflection, which was initiated by a recommendation from the Hugh Ballou consultation, which began in December 2011. The initial Worship/Arts Study Group created a report, which calls for new job descriptions throughout our worship/music staff, changes in compensation, and identifies a new staff position entitled Worship Coordinator. The report calls for a hiring process to begin in February 2014 for all new and redefined job positions with the new staff in place by July 2014. The W/A Vision Team will be working with the Staff Parish Relations Committee in the first half of 2014 to bring this vision to completion. Some members of the Vision Team and others interested in furthering the Worship/Arts Vision will continue to work in supportive ways in the coming years to assure the fulfillment of this vision.

Ministry Team Overview

Over the course of our history Christian Education has played a large role in development of disciples for God’s Kingdom. One of the primary means of this being accomplished has been through the Sunday School model which has been an approach for teaching and discussing God’s Word. Recently the youth ministry team of Faith UMC revisited this approach and decided to modify our Sunday School class which has been reaping great success. With our new approach we have students that are providing leadership for this ministry in a wonderful way enhancing the overall impact of this ministry. Also they have implemented monthly theme days, service projects, games, and Bible Study to help other students grow as they travel along their faith journey.

‘Out of the Box’ Sunday School Being given the chance to help lead our Out of the Box Sunday School has been amazing. It has been a blessing to see God at work in the lives of others. I have learned the difference a person can make by stepping out of their comfort zone and trusting in Jesus. It is uplifting to have this time of fellowship in my life and I am so thankful for it. I wouldn’t trade this time that I spent at our Out of the Box Sunday School for anything! I am blessed to be a part of a church that embraces the gifts that its youth has to offer, and in a way that teaches leadership and responsibility in a fun and worshipful environment. This opportunity has increased the call I have felt to someday be a part of youth ministry.

Refuge Youth Group I have been going to Youth Group for three years now and I have loved every second. I came to Youth Group for the first time with two of my best friends but soon made so many new friends from different schools. Every week I look forward to going so I can continue to meet new people and learn about God’s word. The best part is the friendships I have made at church don’t just stay at church. All of my friends from youth group meet outside of church to have fun and support each other. My life has been completely changed by my experiences at Youth Group, not only by the friends I have made but by the lessons I have been taught. We desire to provide an exciting program which allows youth to grow as disciples of Christ while forming and strengthening relationships with each other, the church, and the community. In order to accomplish this we seek to be real and authentic with our students, communicate God’s Truth in a relevant way for them, and develop relationships with caring adults and fellow students. Ultimately, our hope is that students will leave our ministry with a wonder of who God is, longing for discovery of how they can be used by God, and having a passion to change their community and world.

Confirmation Confirmation was an amazing part of my faith journey. The new relationships I made; the ones that grew; along with the memories I made will make my confirmation stick with me my whole life. There are three main events in my memory of confirmation. The first being the opening retreat, in which I met new people, learned valuable lessons, and had a lot of fun with the other Confirmands. The second event and my favorite was the hike we took up by a beautiful waterfall. As we went, we carried our “sins” (rocks that we picked up) to the top of the waterfall. We learned our sins will weigh us down, but praying for forgiveness (throwing the rocks in the water) will wash our sins away. The last main event of my confirmation would have to be the actual Confirmation ceremony itself. It wasn’t the fact the whole ceremony was so special, it was knowing that through this small portion of my faith journey I had become exponentially closer to God. ~Brandon Bowers, Freshman

Youth Mission Trip This past summer, I had the opportunity to travel with the youth of the church to Rockford, Illinois. Rockford is a very poor area, inhabited by many who were in need of help. At first, I was very unsure of whether or not I should go. I’m glad I did. My team’s assignment was to rebuild the front deck for a family of five. The main tenant of the house, the father, was an amputee stuck in a wheel chair. He had two children, both in elementary school. We spent the week removing ivy, ripping out boards, painting, and repainting. The labor was hard and long, but it brought me closer to both the other youth and closer to God. I didn’t know many of the team going into the week, but by the end I was completely comfortable with most of the people there, if not all of them. I think the most rewarding part of the trip was seeing how happy the tenant’s children were afterwards. ~Thomas Haney, Sophomore

Over 55 youth and adults participated in the Youth Mission Trip. 14 Confirmation students were welcomed into membership on Confirmation Sunday. Countless numbers of 2-‐liters and cookies were consumed by our middle and high school students. 4 High School students successfully initiated a youth-‐run Sunday School called ‘Out of the Box’.

Staff Parish Relations Committee What I find very interesting about “faith based” meetings is that the people are as important as the meeting itself. I think God speaks to me through people. When I was growing up, I expected God to write to me in the sky. He never did! So I think one of the best ways God gets my attention and speaks to me is through people. I still struggle with my past history: “Time is money.” However, I am enjoying the quick flashes when God delivers a message through people. Other committee members are very interesting. Each one could write a 1000 page autobiography that would be very interesting and contain many solid lessons and messages, that I believe are from God. It’s my job to look for the message within the daily living stuff. ~Bob Winther

Stewardship The Stewardship Ministry Team and members of the congregation designed a visual display in the gathering area to reflect the 2013 Stewardship Focus. A overflowing offering plate depicted the gifts, the time, the prayers, and the witness of our church family. Office Volunteer Ministry Team I am a new member of the Office Ministry Team. A list of our duties includes: answering the phone, greeting visitors, keeping track of people in the hospital, duplicating Church information, and addressing and sealing envelopes. Other odd jobs might be helping with VBS, the summer reading program, passing out food to the needy, and any other projects that need to be completed (such as cutting out 500 gold stars for the children of the Church!). It is a pleasure and a blessing to be of help to our Church.

Nominations/Leadership Development Inviting people into ministry often helps people grow in many ways. One person who had never been a member in ministry was invited to be a ministry team leader for 2014. He said yes, he would like to serve in this way as a starting point for other leadership opportunities in the church! A married couple who hadn’t been attending Faith Church regularly, were each invited to serve in different areas. They thanked us for “getting them back to church.” Our ministry team also visits frequent or regular visitors to our Sunday morning services. The purpose is only to hear their story and offer any support that we can. We visit without an agenda. Some members of our team were apprehensive about asking someone they didn’t know to meet for coffee, but wonderful sharing and relationship building has been the overwhelming outcome. Many of the people who have been visited have gone on to become active church members! They have joined small groups, fellowship groups and ministry groups and have become members in ministry in leadership positions on our ministry teams! The members of the Nominations and Leadership Development Ministry Team also serve as support persons to the leaders of Faith Church’s fourteen ministry teams by praying for them, sending them words of support and encouragement and being a resource when they are looking for people to serve with them on their teams. After moving to North Canton from out of state in the spring of 2012, finding a church home was by far the easiest task of getting settled in the area. About the same time, there was an open call-‐out to join the Communications Ministry Team, a group that peaked my interest and afforded me an opportunity to get involved with church activities and to meet some wonderful people. Church Board The three Faith United Methodist Church lay leaders attempt to keep their fingers on the pulse of the congregation and to help as needed. A team of church leaders, working with ideas that came forth in the exploration with consultant and strategist Hugh Ballou, composed and refined a set of Core Values for our church, which the Church Board adopted and which describe our church’s ethos.

When asked to be on this ministry team, I had to question the call. I am not really a "bricks and mortar" person, and have little to contribute to discussions about asphalt or boilers. What I have found, however, is a very dedicated group of people with a wide array of expertise, willing to share knowledge and experience. Very important decisions are made regarding the repair, maintenance, and refurbishment of the church and its properties, all while glorifying the Lord.

Vision: To care for and upgrade the physical building and equipment of the church, parsonage, and surrounding grounds. Mission: to be responsible for the supervision, oversight, and care of all real property used by Faith Church and all personal property and equipment acquired directly by Faith Church.
