December 2013
Season of Thanks O give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his steadfast love endures forever! Psalm 118:1 The staff of Faith UMC have been practicing the art of thankfulness. We are finding more and more ways to give thanks to the Lord and to show our thanks for one another. Even for those who are quick to say, “I don’t need to be thanked” a simple word of thanks lifts the heart and blesses the day. December 1 is the first Sunday of Advent. It is Communion Sunday. Another word used for “Communion” is “Eucharist” which comes from the Greek word eucharisteo which is in the New Testament 39 times! Its definition is “to give thanks.” In our hymnal, the Communion liturgy is titled “The Great Thanksgiving”. In other words, our Advent journey will begin at the table giving thanks. May it continue as a season of giving thanks. Lauralee Stiffler has served Faith UMC on staff for 12 years. On behalf of the staff and the entire congregation, Cara and I give thanks for Lauralee. We are thankful for her devotion, planning, Christ-like care, love, authenticity, creativity, amazing leadership training events, numerous new member classes, gifted way of inviting and empowering others and her wit! She is a model of servant leadership willing to hear and follow God’s call. With thanks, Pastor Steve
Dear Faith Family, We have been members of Faith UMC since March of 1995. In September of 2001, I saw a job posting projected on the wall of the sanctuary one Sunday morning. It was for a 10 hour per week position titled the Coordinator of Lay Ministries. The church was looking for someone who knew the congregation pretty well who could assist and support Pastor Alan Kimber with the new member class and with inviting people into leadership positions. I looked at my husband and said, “I can do that” and I applied. I recently heard our District Superintendent Benita Rollins use the phrase “divinely positioned” to describe the woman at the well. I didn't realize it in September of 2001, but God divinely positioned me at that moment. I thought I was applying for a job. It never occurred to me that I might be answering a call from God, but it is clear to me now that is what happened. I was chosen by you. I have gone about my work welcoming visitors and new members and extending the invitation to serve at Faith. It hasn’t always been easy. There are times when I faced responsibilities that I didn’t think I could do. My missionary cousin, Hope, gave me her simple prayer that I have used countless times. It is, “Help me, Lord! I can’t do this by myself!” And of course, the Lord and His people came to my aid. The encouragement, support and prayer that my Faith family gives me takes my breath away. Thank you for the impact you have made on my life; for shaping me into who I am today; for sustaining and encouraging me. Now, God has “divinely positioned” me in a new place as a full-time grandmother! With love and gratitude,
Lauralee Stiffler
Coordinator of Congregational Development

Why Should Children Honor Their Parents? Over the past couple of weeks our student ministry has been journeying through the maze of how students relate to their parents. Through this series we have been blessed with wonderful conversations and great questions. One of the most thought provoking questions came this past week from one of our middle school students. The question that was raised was, “Why do I as a “child” have to be the mature and responsible one to honor my parents and fight for the relationship when they should be doing this because they are older and the parents?” As we worked through this question, we explored several reasons that children should honor their parents. Read the full story at http://refuge-faithumc.blogspot.com/ Today, I would like to leave you with a question to consider about your relationship with your parents and to discuss with your children. “What do you typically do when you don’t get your way?” As you wrestle with this question I challenge you to think about what the concepts of respect, freedom, and honor mean in your house. As you work through this issue remember that while you may have a shaky relationship with your parents or children currently, you can change that because “When you turn your heart toward your parents, it turns your relationship toward God.”
NEWS Our mission trip planning, events, and fundraising for our trip to Henderson Settlement in Frakes, Kentucky next summer are in full swing. Here are some ways that you can help us raise the necessary funds to make this trip a possibility. We are currently distributing M & M tubes filled with candy for you to take and enjoy at your convenience. All we ask in return is that you enjoy the candy and fill the tube back up with change, cash, or checks and return it to the church. Towards the end of December our donation board will make another appearance to help raise funds for our trip and encourage year-end giving. Look for the display boards in the gathering area and outside the Family Life Center later this month!
Our students are always looking for opportunities to serve others throughout the year. If you have any questions about our trip feel free to contact Susan Arnold (sarnold@faithumchurch.org) or Donny Bell (donnybell@gmail.com) or Matt Hart (mhart@faithumchurch.org). Thank you for your partnering with this life-changing ministry!
Confirmation Information: In January our eighth grade students will have the opportunity to participate in our wonderful Confirmation program that will take place over the next few months. During November a mailing went out to all eighth grades students on our roles inviting them to participate in this experience, however if we missed your student or if they have a friend that would like to participate in the program we would willingly welcome them to it as well. In addition to our normal Confirmation program we are also adding a special piece this year for students who may have missed the program because they came to the church following their eighth grade year, or chosen not to participate at the time they were eligible. This class will cover similar materials and allow these students to learn more about their faith journey and become further connected to the wonderful ministry of Faith UMC. If you know of a student who would be interested in pursuing this path to be confirmed please contact Matt Hart at 330-499-6040 or mhart@faithumchurch.org with their information.
The Safe Sanctuary Ministry Group has been working towards the safety of the children, youth and adults of Faith United Methodist Church and all others who attend our many programs and services. One of the children says, “Thanks for helping me with my studies and for your love.” This truly is a way to share God’s love! Church Garden News The garden has been cleaned up for winter. We celebrate another successful year! Over $800 was raised thanks to the efforts of about two dozen volunteers. We sent $400 to the Akron Canton Regional Foodbank. They can provide 4 meals for every dollar, so our gift will provide 1600 meals for the hungry. The balance of the money has been given to Faith Kitchen to provide for the needs of those in Canton. Our contribution will help supply the kitchen’s needs for a month – another 200 meals and groceries. Thank you not only to our volunteers, but also to all of you who bought our salsa, soup, and stuffed peppers. We ask that you hold your empty pint jars for us until after the first of the year when a collection box will return to the Gathering Area.

FINDING THE INNER CHRIST OF JOY AND PEACE An Epiphany Service of Reflection and Silence Monday, January 6, 7 PM, Chapel Christians recall “ Wise Men from the east came to Jerusalem. For we have observed his star at its rising and we have come to pay homage to him” (Matthew 2:1-2). The word epiphany means “an inner realization”. We are also called to our personal epiphany of an “inner realization” of who Jesus is and what that means in our life. Epiphanies are often found in silence and reflection. Sam Purses and John Buchanan will lead a service of silence and reflection “Finding The Inner Christ of Joy and Peace” in our Chapel, Monday, January 6, 7 PM. All are welcome.
What is Advent? The season of Advent marks the beginning of the Christian year.
Advent is the season of waiting and watching as we prepare our hearts and lives to celebrate God’s greatest gift, the birth of our Lord and Savior. The word Advent means ‘coming’ or ‘arrival.’ The focus of the entire season is the celebration of the birth of Jesus and the anticipation of the return of Christ the King. We prepare to receive Christ into our hearts and wait expectantly for Jesus to come again. Advent is far more than marking a 2,000 year old event in history. It is celebrating the revelation of God in Christ. Advent is a hopeful time as we anticipate and experience that wonderful gift of Jesus Christ, Emmanuel, God with us. During this special time of year our attention is drawn to thoughts of angels, shepherds, stables, and bright shining stars because they remind us that the birth of Jesus forever changed the world. It is our hope that as we stop and reflect on this special time of year, this season of waiting, that we will remember to make God the center of all we do. During this season of waiting, we invite you to prayerfully examine your spiritual heart, your faith journey. As the stores and our homes are decorated and transformed for the holidays, we want to be open to the most important transformation, the transformation of our hearts as we prepare to draw closer to Jesus this Advent. We invite you to explore the following resources: Visit the literature rack in the Gathering Area for Advent devotions for families, adults, youth, & children. Learn about the Jesse Tree, Chrismons, Advent wreaths, and Advent prayer calendars. Visit our library, our website, www.faithumchurch.org, staff blogs and our Facebook page for additional resources and activities. Make Faith UMC’s Advent devotion book part of your daily practices. A digital copy will be available on our website. Participate in one of our Sunday School classes or Small Group experiences to experience our church-wide sermon and teaching series, The Story. Get involved in our Wednesday Night Advent Experiences. Invite your friends & neighbors! Reach out to others in Christian love through the service opportunities listed in the bulletin or Faith Notes. Invite others to worship and church activities during the Advent season. Copies of all versions of The Story resources are also available for purchase. Look for the display outside the church office and Family Life Center. Visit Faith’s Library/Media Center to explore additional resources to help you dig deeper into the sermon messages and small group studies! May you experience the gift of Jesus in fresh, new, life-changing ways as you prepare your heart and home for Christ this Advent!

Chances are many of us will soon enjoy watching a production of the well-loved "A Christmas Carol", either at a theater or in the comfort of our own homes. But, as I write this, I am reminded of another famous Dickens novel, "A Tale of Two Cities" which begins with the words "it was the best of times, it was the worst of times...it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair." Although this novel depicts the plight and suffering of people of another time and another place, the words ring true today. If you or someone you know and care about is facing a difficult time, our Stephen Ministers are available to provide one-on-one Christian care to those individuals. They are there to listen, care, encourage and provide emotional support. The care received is both confidential and free. For more information, you may contact Pastor Steve, Pastor Cara, Pam Honnold (330.494.8650), or Ron Luikart (330.494-7570).
