December 2012 FROM THE PASTOR
Looking Back to See Ahead
“The Lord is with you… Do not be afraid.” – Luke 1:28b, 30b What do you see when you look back? I am excited about this year’s Advent Devotional booklet because the writers were invited to tell a story. Whenever we tell a story, we look back on an event or an experience, ponder its significance and meaning and then do our best to capture the experience in words in hopes that others might grow, learn or be inspired in a similar way. What do you see when you look back on 2012? What will you remember? How have you told and how will you tell stories about your experiences? Approximately 60 to 100 years after Jesus death and resurrection, an evangelist named Luke decided to write his own account of Jesus’ life. His purpose (stated in Luke 1:4) is so that the reader “may know the truth…” Clearly as Luke looked back, he saw Good News like he had never seen before. An ordinary woman betrothed to an ordinary man receives extraordinary news from an angel sent by God. “You will conceive… and bear a son…he will be called the Son of God,” Gabriel told her. Mary is perplexed and has some questions for Gabriel but by verse 38 she accepts the news and trusts that it will be good. Perhaps her acceptance stemmed from Gabriel’s opening words of assurance, “The Lord is with you… Do not be afraid.” These words hold true for us still today. When you look back, do you see how the Lord is with you? Whatever each of us experienced in 2012 and whatever awaits us in 2013, as we live more fully believing that the Lord is with us, we are able to face the future unafraid. This Advent, we’ll walk the road to Bethlehem. May we together look back so we may see ahead through eyes of faith. Blessings,
Pastor Steve

LOST! If anyone has seen or picked up a black dress raincoat, please contact Gwen Guiher or the church office. The coat was last seen on November 4th in the coat rack off of the Gathering Area. Thank you! Faith Church Columbarium: We currently have 56 niches sold to members and 15 niches in use as the final resting place of loved ones. It’s a lovely garden any time of the year!
Did you know that we have the entire Bible on CD? It’s available to be checked out in our reference section. Do you know Dr. Mike McCabe? He is a local pediatrician and musician. Look for his CD’s for children in our library. They are especially fun for preschoolers. Second Wind provided a terrific speaker in November. Paul V. Stutzman gave an exciting and inspirational talk on his time spent hiking the Appalachian Trail and biking across America. The library now has his books relating those experiences as well as his fiction book about a boy growing up in the Amish community. Look for many books, videos and CD’s for Advent in our library.
Blessings of Christmas to all!

Recently our students studied a new series, Doubt. This series examines the fact that we can allow our questions about our faith to actually drive us closer to God rather than farther away. Having doubts and questions are a normal part of faith formation and this series encourages our students to wrestle with those questions as they seek to make their faith their own. Doubt is a powerful thing that can direct us down one or two different paths. We can choose to allow the doubt in our faith, God, the church, etc. to deter us from following Jesus or we can allow it to direct us closer to God’s heart. For me, doubt was something that I wrestled with for a long time in my own life. I struggled with different pieces of Christianity, the Bible, the Church, and what I was supposed to believe. However, for the longest time I always felt that I was not allowed to ask questions about God because that would demonstrate my lack of faith. However, the summer before my freshman year of college my thought process was drastically altered. Read the full story at http://refuge-faithumc.blogspot.com/

So as parents, do you encourage your children to have doubts about God, faith, the church, etc.? Do you seek to discuss with them the personal relationship that Jesus desires for them to have with Him? Do you challenge your children to ask questions about the difficult things in life, knowing that you may not have the answers? My challenge to you is to encourage doubt and questions in the lives of your children. Use their questions as a time to study God’s Word together and grow closer together, both as a family and as Christians.

Are You Ready For Advent? The season of Advent marks the beginning of the Christian year. Advent is the season of waiting and watching as we prepare our hearts and lives to celebrate God’s greatest gift, the birth of our Lord and Savior. The word Advent means ‘coming’ or ‘arrival.’ The focus of the entire season is the celebration of the birth of Jesus and the anticipation of the return of Christ the King. We prepare to receive Christ into our hearts and wait expectantly for Jesus to come again. Advent is far more than marking a 2,000 year old event in history. It is celebrating a truth about God, the revelation of God in Christ. Advent is a hopeful time as we anticipate and experience that wonderful gift of Jesus Christ, Emmanuel, God with us. During this special time of year our attention is drawn to thoughts of angels, shepherds, stables, and bright shining stars because they remind us that the birth of Jesus forever changed the world. It is our hope that as we stop and reflect on this special time of year, this season of waiting, that we will remember to make God the center of all we do. During this season of waiting, we invite you to prayerfully examine your spiritual heart, your faith journey. As the stores and our homes are decorated and transformed for the holidays, we want to remember that the most important transformation should be the transformation of our hearts as we prepare to draw closer to Jesus this Advent.
