May 2013 FROM PASTOR CARAStand at the crossroads and look: ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. - Jeremiah 6:16 The prophet Jeremiah was ministering to the nation of Israel at the crossroads of the formation and re-formation of identity in God. We are all being formed and re-formed each day in our divinely shaped identity. I am grateful for the approval of our District Superintendent, Benita Rollins, our FUMC Committee on Staff-Parish Relations, the Church Board and the congregation that I may give some time to intentional formation this summer as I take a spiritual renewal leave. During the 6 weeks of leave and the 2 weeks of family vacation I will allow God to shape me as I: · Attend an 8 day spiritual retreat at the Holy Wisdom Benedictine Monastery in Madison, Wisconsin while the boys attend camp. Here I will listen for God: o with a Spiritual Director o in worship several times a day o as I nap o in reading books that I longingly desired to read but placed on my shelves long ago · Engage in holy conversations with our Costello family while we soak in the sun at the beach · Make fancy breakfasts and eat them leisurely on the sun porch with "my fam" · Renew in earnest my commitment to running as a sacred art · Reunite with good women friends from Albion College, US2 Missionary and Wesley Theological Seminary years · Have a date or two (maybe even three!) with Steve · Play with the boys at Dogwood Pool · Take long walks and have coffee with my Soul Sisters · Pick wild blueberries and celebrate my father's 70th birthday in Canada with our Stultz family As I return from spiritual renewal leave renewed and reshaped in my God-intended identity I pray that you will have been renewed by some summer Sabbath as well. Together, then, we will move forward into our call as disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world - renewing the world in the image of the kingdom of God. With much love and appreciation for your partnership in ministry -

Pastor Cara

Cara's Spiritual Renewal Leave will begin on the afternoon of Sunday June 23rd. She will return to the pulpit on Sunday August 18th and to the office during that following week. Pastor Steve will continue to assume ministry duties during the 6 weeks of Cara's Leave. He will be taking 2 1/2 weeks of family vacation to Virginia Beach in early July and Blind River, Ontario, Canada in early August. Additional Pastoral needs including some pastoral care and preaching will be lovingly given by several of Faith UMC's retired clergy. The summer pastoral schedule will be published in the June issue of Faith Notes.

Meet Carlos Morgelos. Carlos is one of our sponsored students and is currently in the 8th grade. He is an excellent student and enjoys singing and playing the small drum. His favorite subjects are art and physical education, because the teachers are nice and very patient. Carlos is goal oriented. At school, he hopes to make new friends. At church, he wants to teach younger children about the Bible and God’s love. Carlos recites Bible verses when he is sad. Carlos reports that he has a pretty, younger sister who also makes good grades. She is in the 5th grade. You can see Carlos’ complete letter on the bulletin board in the east hallway. Because of the poverty in Paraguay, many families and members of the staff often have emergencies for which they have no money. Currently, two young girls from the school are in the hospital, possibly with leukemia. A teacher has to have daily radiation treatments for cancer. In order to help meet such significant needs and show God’s love, an Emergency Fund for New Horizon Families is being established. Checks may be sent to Samaritan Hands/Paraguay Schools, 2508 Old Niles Ferry Road, Maryville, TN 37803. Note that the money is for the Emergency Fund on the memo line. The need is great and your help will be appreciated!

May is Christian Home Month: 2013 Theme—Families Called to Love Christian Home Month is designed to help local congregations develop and strengthen faith in the home & celebrate and support Christian families in their faith journey. We encourage you to spend some time talking & sharing with your families. In Deuteronomy 6:6-9 we are reminded to love God and to keep these words throughout the day in visible ways. Through Jesus’ words in John 13:34, we hear the commandment to love one another. As we are called to show love individually, we are called as disciples to show love in our homes and with those we call family. The home is a place for living in the light of God’s love and daily practicing the Christian faith. For family devotions and prayer resources, ideas, and a family covenant for love look for information in the literature racks at the church or contact Kathy Schmucker, Director of Christian Education & Spiritual Formation.

What is Emmaus? The Walk to Emmaus is an experience of Christian spiritual renewal and formation that begins with a 3-day short course in Christianity. It is an opportunity to meet Jesus Christ in a new way as God’s grace and love is revealed to you through other believers. The objective of Emmaus is to inspire, challenge, and equip the local church members for Christian action in their homes, churches, and places of work. Emmaus lifts up a way for our grace-filled lives to be lived and shared with others. How do some of Faith UMC’s Emmaus participants describe Emmaus? You can enjoy some of the same benefits by getting involved in our “Garden of Weedin’” project. Get outdoors, work in the earth, water the vegetables, and help with the harvest. This project helps feed many hungry people in our area. Call Trudy Jones at 330-494-4723 or email her at Trudy@neo.rr.com to get involved. We’ll be planting late in May, depending on the weather.

So Now What The experiences of the Lenten season including Holy Week and Easter have always amazed me. It seems that every year God does something truly remarkable in my heart to remind me of the depth of His love for me as His child. We journey through the forty days of Lent starting with Ash Wednesday by examining our hearts to see the sin in our lives. For some this marks the start of “giving up” something to focus more intently upon the God who created them so uniquely. We then travel the road by searching our hearts, discovering more about God, and deepening our faith through the next several days. Read the full story at http://refuge-faithumc.blogspot.com/ Have you ever asked the question, “So Now What, God?” We need to remember that the disciples were not simply trained overnight. The church (meaning us, not the building) was not built in a matter of minutes, but rather over a great deal of time, sacrifice, and suffering. Our journey doesn’t end with Easter but rather continues on throughout the remainder of our lives as we grow towards being a more devoted disciple of Christ. What opportunities are presenting themselves for you to grow in your faith following Easter? What opportunities are arising that may stretch you to deepen your faith? What are the opportunities for you to experience a resurrection in your own lives today?

If you know of a service opportunity, feel free to contact Susan Arnold (sarnold@faithumchurch.org) or Donny Bell (donnybell@gmail.com) or Matt Hart (mhart@faithumchurch.org). Thank you for your partnering with this life-changing ministry!

YOUTH MISSION TEAM BRUNCH MAY 5TH There is a Youth Mission Team Brunch Fundraiser on Sunday, May 5th, after each worship service. Come and support the youth going to Rockford, Illinois this summer on the youth mission trip. In April we received a thank you note from Diane Dickerson from Dueber UMC. She was a recent recipient of an Act of Grace from someone here at Faith UMC. The experience inspired a devotional (written below) which was written for their church’s Lenten Devotional. A Blessing in a Time of Trouble: Psalms 46: 1 and 2: God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear. I was very upset and emotional about the shooting deaths of an entire first grade class in Newtown, Connecticut this December. I was in tears all week and overwhelmed with sorrow. I thought of my own grandchildren who are just this age, 6 year old Rachel Dickerson and 7 year old Sarah Quinn, and could feel the pain of the Connecticut families. I had even recently visited in Rachel's first grade classroom and met her teacher and classmates and that gave me a vivid picture of how young and innocent these shooting victims were. That same week I received a blessing and encouragement in the most unexpected place, my Acme grocery store. When I went to pay for my groceries, I was told that there was no charge. Someone ahead of me in line had paid for me. I was given a card telling me that I had just received an act of grace from Faith United Methodist Church. The card said they believe in extending grace because they have experienced it and that today I had received an act of grace not because of who I am and not because of what I have done but because of who God is and because He loved us first. It added, may you feel the tangible love of God. The card encouraged me to pass on this grace and to share how someone gave me this card. I am happy to be able to do this very thing with this article. I was thankful for this clear sign of God's love and care for me and its perfect timing.
