A protégé of Khalil Ibrahim, Ismail Mat Hussin stands today on his own and has kept true to batik painting until today. Batik art has ascended from a humble and practical worn piece of cloth and alleviated to fine art today and Ismail Mat Hussin is one of the very finest in this art. Born in Pantai Sabak, Kota Bharu, Ismail Mat Hussin’s batik combines warm tones and earthy hues from a restricted palette of colors to depict everyday rural scenes with lively good humor. His human figures are drawn more real looking people with dull background surroundings and Ismail’s trademark is heavy limbs with the muscles rendered mosaic-like and graceful movements of figures. The works of Ismail Mat Hussin are collected and can be seen in prestigious institutions such as National Visual Arts Gallery, Malaysia Airline System, National Museum, Esso Malaysia, Bank Negara, and Petronas Gallery.

According to Wai Leng, the hands are also depicted calloused and far from graceful manner to signify their toil and plowing away at their job.

Among his works are some in traditional Chinese styles and others in modern Western ones, in both of which he had shown considerable proficiency. As well as a painter, Tsai also became known as a poet and composer, especially for his “Ocean Wave” (published 1953 in Hong Kong). The subjects of earth, light, wind and water based landscapes have always been his trademark. Ever the magician who weaves magic on his canvas, Ismail Latiff features a harmonious blend of colours, creating a motion-like masterpiece on canvas. This is the type of scene that one encounters only in dreams or in the figments of the imagination, but very difficult to put into words and even tougher to revisualise. There’s much to unfold with Ismail’s works but that’s the beauty of it. The artists treats his viewers to a visual orchestra, transporting them to an enigmatic and mythical realm.

It’s clear that Hamdan has an affinity for painting and art. His signature sees bright, bold colours on canvas, along with layers of imagery, most often animals, because the artist believes there’s some semblance of traits between the two. From owls, herons to women as subjects, each is infused with Hamdan’s own interpretation and social messages. One might say that the artist’s works share similar characteristics with the batik and songket motifs, all part of Hamdan’s oeuvre. He uses large and fine strokes with attention to detail and incorporates a graphic-like quality to his paintings. The artist’s paintings are certainly gripping, creating excitement and wonder for its viewers.

Renowned batik artist Mat Dollah spent his formative years studying at the Teluk Kurau East School in Singapore graduated with a Bachelor in Fine Arts from ISI, Indonesia. There is no stopping Mat Dollah when it comes to creating his works of art. With a niche in the batik medium, the fabric goes through a demanding process that’s exclusively his. The images he produces uses a variety of colour application techniques, alongside wax cracks, dots, and lines to appear to be emerging from the artwork. That is what sets Matt Dollah’s batik apart from traditional batik artworks. So, don’t be surprised if he repeats the entire procedure time and time again. However, those are purely technical. Matt Dollah loves concocting powerful works of art. He employs powerful, ethereal colours such as reds and yellows — fiery and depicting his distinct personality. However, there are also fantastical depictions of local myth, tradition and modernism within the same frame. To create each of his paintings, Mat Dollah uses the titik lilin (hot wax dots) technique and spends eight hours every day working on the painting, over the course of four to six weeks. Matt Dollah’s subjects are profoundly communal and not at all alone, in contrast to his hues. Malay folklore and the realities of contemporary political culture coexist in his works.

The year 1989 was a prolific year for Ismail’s career as he took part in three separate exhibitions, the first being at The First ASEAN Travelling Exhibition in Paintings, Photography & Children’s Art, that took place in numerous cities; Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Manila, his homeland and Singapore, to name a few. His second stint of the year was at the 3rd International Asian European Art Biennial Exhibition that took place at the State Museum of Fine Arts, Ankara, Turkey. The very same year, he exhibited at the Osaka Triennial ’90 International Competition of Painting at My Dome Osaka, Japan.

The immensely talented Leong Chee Siong pursued and eventually completed an education in art at the Kuala Lumpur College of Art in 1984. He would subsequently work as a lecturer there. Chee Siong’s works have been showcased in numerous venerable institutions since 1983, including the National Art Gallery, the Australian High Commission, Petronas Gallery, Nanyang Art Gallery, NN Gallery and many others. He has also exhibited internationally in countries including Buenos Aires, Singapore, Korea, and the USA. The artist has even gone on to gain recognition in the Phillip Morris Arts Award and his works are in the collections of the National Art Gallery Malaysia and Bank Negara Malaysia. According to Chee Siong, the painter is not a mathematician, the painter uses images to construct the gold ratio. This is quite evident in classic-styled paintings which are strictly composed and incorporate this ratio. The more complex the composition, the more complex the proportion. Trained in Western-styled paintings, the artist breaks down painting into four categories —composition, colour, space and moulding. These four elements are then subdivided into tone, dot line surface, texture and conception. These components are fundamental components of a painting. Chee Siong is an artist who is sensitive to colour, texture and perceptions. Owning and knowing his tendency and sensitivities helped shape his individualistic style.

These themes of environment, decay and visual regeneration continue–but have evolved into a visual palette that has been described as more engaging and unique.

Chuah Seow Keng is recognised as one of Malaysia’s leading artists and is known for his work on batik (a traditional fabric closely associated with Malaysian culture) and watercolour paintings. Chuah was awarded a scholarship to study at the Suddeutsche Kunststoff-Zentrum, Wurzburg, Germany in 1968 specialising in fiberglass sculptures. Chuah was first exposed to the art of batik painting by this father Dato’ Chuah Thean Teng, The Father of Batik Painting, who pioneered batik art in Malaysia. Chuah’s mastery of this medium was recognised early on and he was selected to demonstrate his batik skills at the International Freundschaftheim in Buckeburg, Germany. Batik is an especially difficult medium to work with as its thin fibers absorbs ink on contact, allowing no room for errors. In recognition of his artistic talents, two of Chuah’s batik paintings, ‘Rural Life’ and ‘Fish’, were selected by the United Nations International Children’s Funds (UNICEF) for their greeting cards in 1988, and in 1989, Chuah was awarded the Certificate of Excellence for Outstanding Achievement at the Artitudes 7 th International Art Competition, New York, United States.

Siri Kebaya Red (Shiboritik Series), 2006
61
Celebrated Malaysian artist Fatimah Chik trained at the MARA School of Art and Design as a textile designer and was born in 1947 in Pontian, Johor. She began experimenting in batik designs from the mid 1970’s and it was then when she started dabbling in infusing varied motifs into her artworks, birthing a style that was entirely her own. Fatimah Chik’s coveted and brilliant Nusantara Series as well as Kebaya and Shiboritik Series are highly ornate, structured with its luxurious texture and at most times, the way it is created – blocks, waxing, hand painting, dyeing to add more value to it. The artist has wonderfully revolutionised and brought batik to greater heights by co-mixing the old-style of crafting symbolic batik with new art forms to fit into the category of contemporary fine art. Her creations break the barriers between the physical, religious and racial differences among people. Throughout her artistic career, Fatimah maintained her role as an educator at the Mara Institute of Technology and later at the Malaysian Institute of Art. Fatimah is venerated in the Malaysian art and fashion scene and her expertise is valued as a judge at competitions such as the Piala Seri Batik Design Competition in 2015.

Born in 1950 in Johor, Ghani frequented a small movie theatre that was run by a family member as a young boy, where he developed a predisposition towards painting to depict movement and a sense of time through cowboy films. He cites Pollock and de Kooning as his early inspirations, but he eventually began to develop his unique style in painting, with masks being his theme for many years as a motif to explore human emotions and circumstances. He received a scholarship to study art at George Mason University, USA, where he studied Graphic Art and proceeded to pursue his Master’s in Fine Art at Catholic University, Washington. Upon returning to Malaysia, he began lecturing in Universiti MARA Institute of Technology. Most notably known for Abstract Expressionism, his other popular series are Topeng, Wayang, Segerak and Biring.
Inspired by the masks of Kenyah and Kayan from his trip to Sarawak, the cultural motifs played a major part in Yusof Ghani’s Siri Topeng. Beyond just expression of faces, by combining oil on canvas in controlled structures, intensified by outlines, shows the artist’s effort in exploring new forms and visual approaches that are to the point, solid, structured and meaningful. The figures depicted, while at times appear graphic and gory, is the embodiment of movement, radically altered by Yusof Ghani. He dismantles and transforms them into planes of colour and curving lines. They are almost forceful, and at times, even awkward.

Tay’s works have been extensively exhibited around the world in Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Australia, Japan, USA, and Germany. In 1970, he was commissioned to produce around 300 works for the Hilton Hotel in Singapore, and as a testament to his influence in the arts, in 2007, two years after his death, a solo exhibition of his works was hosted by the Stamford House of Singapore as a tribute. Later, in 2013, art collectors celebrated his legacy with the exhibition, Reminiscing Tay Bak Koi.
The late Tay Bak Koi is a second-generation Singaporean artist most well-known for his portrayals of fishing villages, kampung scenes, and buffaloes. His innate talent for drawing was first noticed by his father’s friend, who then enrolled him at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 1957 where he studied under Cheong Soo Pieng, a seminal pioneer of the Nanyang style of art. Oils and watercolours are Tay’s forte as he paints in a distinctive style in a realm between realism and fantasy. Regarded as one of his most prominent works, the Buffaoles series sees the majestic animals constructed with curves and sharp peaks outlining large, humped bodies supported by contrasting small legs.

His artworks bore profound personal, social and moral significance in various forms and mediums for the masses. His later works, however, demonstrated a spiritual and religious theme that centred around balance and harmony on canvas. The late Syed Ahmad was truly a multifaceted artist, having dabbled in various art languages including figurative and caricature drawings; abstract paintings; sculptures; textile art; murals; stage and poster designs to writings. The artists’ works are exclusive and scarce, making every piece extremely sought after as well as it’s of great value.

The outstanding painting entitled Jabal Rahmah, executed using pencil, colour pencil, watercolour and acrylic paint on paper is an iteration of a holy pilgrimage site for Muslims, showcasing the artist’s interest in spirituality. In the distance, a mountain that represents Mount Arafah is portrayed, while in the foreground, lines of triangular form that can be assumed as hills are portrayed. What’s immediately observed in this painting is the juxtaposition of warm and cool hues, exposing the hallmark of his early works.
