It’s hard to believe that it is that time of the year again but Expo 2013 is right around the corner. This year’s show will feature the latest and best products and services for your next project. The show runs from 9 a.m-4 p.m. Saturday, April 6, and from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, April 7. This year’s show will feature a beautifully landscaped front entrance by Blake Tile & Stone, be sure to come and check out the amazing outdoor living space they have created as you enter the Expo halls. Continuing our discussion on decks and their attachment to the house ‌

In order to address both the vertical loading (people, furniture, etc., on the deck) and lateral loading (seismic, wind, etc., from the side), a pressure-treated ledger at the face of the home is required. The joists can no longer be attached solely with joist hangers to the rim of the structure.

The ledger must be anchored with lag bolts or screws into the rim and not through the use of nails. Note also that any metal fasteners or connectors that come in contact with pressure-treated wood must be hot-dipped galvanized or stainless steel due to the corrosive nature of current pressure-treating processes.

To prevent the deck from racking, additional mechanical fasteners are required. These hold-down devices shall be installed in not less than two locations and each device shall have an allowable stress design capacity of not less that 1,500 pounds. Note that these devices do need to connect to the framing inside the home. See the figure below. For questions on the allowable capacity of the hold-down device, check with the supplier.

Certified Aging in Place Specialists (CAPS) offer design solutions for safe, independent living at home

Those seeking help with adapting their homes to meet changing lifestyles need look no further than a Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS). Undergoing a remodel is a daunting prospect under any circumstance.

When faced with an emergency such as an injury or if aging parents unexpectedly move in, it can be even more so. Consulting a CAP Specialist can ensure that you receive comprehensive, practical information that allows you to make informed choices about necessary home modifications.

Studies by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) indicate that older homeowners prefer to “age in place,” which means staying in your home safely, independently and comfortably, for as long as

you wish. The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) in collaboration with the AARP developed the CAPS program to meet the growing needs of the baby boomer housing market. Seventy-seven million baby boomers are reaching retirement age in the first years of the 21st century and 49 percent of them do not feel that their home will fully meet their needs as they grow older, according to the NAHB. CAPS graduates are specifically trained to work with older adults to renovate their homes for “aging in place.” A CAPS consultation addresses the code issues, safety issues, common remodeling expenditures and projects, product ideas and the resources needed to provide safe housing solutions.
