Falmouth alumna Viktoriya Staykova describes how the Illustration: Authorial Practice MA helped her crystallise her ideas and build her career as a graphic novelist and designer.
What led you to do a Master’s in Illustration?
After completing a BA in Books and Printed Graphics at the National Academy of Arts in Sofia, Bulgaria I wanted to specialise in illustration. My BA programme explored everything from visual communication, graphic design, typography and book design, but when it came to my MA I wanted to focus specifically in the field of the book arts.
Why did you choose Falmouth University?
My search was for a place with a good portfolio of previous student’s projects, attention to education, and friendly peaceful attitude and atmosphere, which I think Falmouth has.
Tell us about your graphic novel and the inspiration behind it:
Licitus is a science fiction graphic novel. Its construction explores a linear narrative told visually through the body of the book using the idea of the ‘turn of the page’ and the way images are linked in a continuous manner. Illustrationwise Licitus is based on research in the field of science fiction illustration via the history of book design, film and literature. The visuals lean on some distinctive trends through the field.
Were you working on this before you started the MA, or did you develop the idea while studying?
