Editor’s letter Hello and welcome to another great issue of Family Living Magazine. This month I have some exciting, but also bittersweet news... I have sold Family Living! The decision has been a few months in the making, and this month it is official. Family Living Magazine has a new owner, local mum Amy, who you can meet on page 6 will be taking over from August. The decision to sell was a difficult one as the magazine has been so well received by readers and local businesses alike. The reality for me is just that with two kids under school age, a growing blog plus the magazine, it was all just getting too much. I want to have the time to focus on my kids while they are still young, plus I have been given some exciting new opportunities with the blog that I want to jump into. I will still be around contributing articles, but I will be handing over everything to Amy. I’m so excited to pass the magazine on to a fun, friendly, local mum who shares the vision I had for the magazine when it began. It is hard to believe how far it has come in just 8 months but I know Amy has many exciting things planned! Don’t forget to support our advertisers. Let them know you saw them in Family Living Magazine. Their support keeps the magazine free for you. Enjoy!

Family Living will soon have a new face.... Meet Amy! TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOU AND YOUR FAMILY My husband and I are parents to 2 gorgeous kids aged 6 and 4, and although we only moved to Newport 8 months ago, we have worked on the northern beaches for 12 years. We are a close knit family and love to get outdoors and experience the many adventures that the Northern beaches has to offer.
6 | familyliving magazine
WHAT DID YOU DO PRE KIDS? Prior to kids I worked as a Rehabilitation Counsellor and ran my own company alongside 4 surgeons. My work involved the rehabilitation of workers back into meaningful employment following a traumatic injury or illness. It was very rewarding work, however I have always had a love for writing throughout my life and feel its now the right time to pursue this lifelong passion and be successful doing it.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FAMILY FRIENDLY THING TO DO ON THE NORTHERN BEACHES? Honestly, our favourite thing to do on the Northern Beaches is to visit one of the many gorgeous beaches on offer where we can relax together as a family. Whether it be kicking a ball, swimming or going for a paddle on our stand up paddle board, being together by the water helps us to unwind and spend much needed quality time together. IF YOU’VE GOT 1 HOUR TO YOURSELF, WHAT DO YOU DO? I love to go for a walk or run along the waters edge to zone out and be with my own thoughts. I also love to catch up with friends and have lunch or a coffee at one of our local cafes. WHY DID YOU DECIDE FAMILY LIVING MAGAZINE WAS A GOOD OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU? Family Living Magazine not only allows me to pursue my dreams of writing close to home, but it also offers me the flexibility to work my own hours and still be there for my family, as they are and always will be my number one priority. WHAT CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE FROM YOU OVER THE NEXT 6-12 MONTHS? You can expect to read about many hard hitting family related topics, whilst gaining inspiration, ideas and solutions for the many questions we are faced with in our roles as parents.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO? I am looking forward to meeting the faces of many local companies within the northern beaches and assisting them to promote their businesses whilst also providing families with informative, fun and interesting articles to read. ANY CONCERNS? I actually feel really confident in my move to take over Family Living Magazine. Michelle, has done a fantastic job so far in setting up the business and creating its success in such a short time and I feel I am the right person to continue on this success in the future. A NOTE FROM MICHELLE... I’m so pleased to be passing Family Living on to a new local mum who has a similar vision to me. I look forward to seeing what is to come. Welcome Amy! familyliving magazine | 7

The Top 3 Northern Beaches walks for families IRRAWONG RESERVE WATERFALL, WARRIEWOOD WETLANDS Where is it? The track to the waterfall is easily accessible from Garden Street or Irrawong Road in Warriewood. The path to the falls is not pram or wheelchair friendly due to several small sets of stairs. It can also get quite muddy! Parts of Warriewood Wetlands is boardwalked and is accessible for prams and wheelchairs though. The path from Garden Street to the falls takes around 15-20 minutes each way and is manageable for any fitness level.
Why is it great ? This little pocket of the Northern Beaches is unknown to even the most established residents, and you’ll often be the only person enjoying the waterfall! The path itself is really kid friendly and interesting. There are little bridges and boardwalks, fascinating trees and vines and lots of wildlife. Once you get closer to the waterfall you can hear the rushing water, and once your reach it you’ll think you’ve stepped back in time. There are amazing overhanging rocks which are covered in carvings from people who’ve visited before.
familyliving magazine | 9
STONY RANGE REGIONAL BOTANICAL GARDEN
Where is it? Stony Range is located in Dee Why, at 810 Pittwater Road. There is a free parking area located at the gardens and it is wheelchair accessible (& pram friendly) plus there are picnic areas, toilets and BBQ’s. It’s also easily accessible by public transport.
10 | familyliving magazine
Why is it great? The garden is like a mini sanctuary. It sits right next to a main road, but once you are inside you’d never know it! There is a signposted walking track that winds you through a full range of microclimates and takes around 20 minutes to complete. You can smell, touch and even taste a range of plants as part of the “sensory garden”, and explore side tracks and mini gardens all around the site. Spring is by far the best time to visit as it is full of wildflowers and gorgeous flourishing plants, but it is beautiful at any time of year. Kids will love the touch and smell aspect as well as all the little hiding spots and areas to explore. It has a couple of lovely mini waterfalls that are spectacular after rain, and if you are into nature photography then you will be in heaven! There are even little magnifying glasses for them to grab and take around with them. It’s all totally FREE!
NARRABEEN LAGOON TRAIL Where is it? The trail runs for 8.5km all the way around Narrabeen Lake. You can access it from almost everywhere around the lake, but if you need to park, then Billarong Reserve, South Creek Reserve, Middle Creek Reserve, Berry Reserve or Jamieson Park entry are your best options. You do need to pay for parking at most of these entries unless you have a relevant Warringah or Pittwater Council parking sticker. There is a lot of free parking near Berry Reserve and South Creek Reserve if you don’t have a sticker. All of the trail is now pram friendly and sections are wheelchair friendly. It is a shared bike/pedestrian area so be aware of those speeding by on bikes!
Why is it great? In 2015 the full loop was completed and it is now one of the most popular family friendly spots on the Northern Beaches. To do the full loop takes 2-3 hours and is achievable with kids and prams. It’s almost all completely flat and is great for bikes. There are stacks of picnic spots, fishing areas and you can even grab a coffee at one of the many cafes near the Berry Reserve entrance. There are also several playgrounds along the path to stop and enjoy some slide or swing action for the little ones. There are a number of historic sites along the way that are clearly marked with lots of information and old photos. It’s a fabulous day out. article and photos republished from

Date your spouse: Great date ideas to bring back the fun and romance! When was the last time you went on a date with your spouse? A couple of years ago I decided it was time to start implementing date nights again, so for Christmas I gave my husband 12 dates! They were packaged in little envelopes with cards showing what the date was. Each month he opens one and we go on a date. Here are some ideas! CHOCOLATE FONDUE NIGHT This is one that you can do at home. Melt some chocolate, cut up some fruit and marshmallows and sit down to a candlelit chocolate fondue night.
MOONLIT PICNIC We used to go on picnics often when we were dating. Somewhere along the line we stopped and I decided it was time to reinvent this date. Pack a picnic, a rug, some blankets and pillows and go on a moonlit picnic. We live near the beach so often go there but you could find a nice park and have a picnic under the stars. GO OUT TO BRUNCH Can’t get night time babysitters? What about brunch? Maybe it is the novelty of being able to eat your whole breakfast without sharing, or finishing your coffee while it is still hot, but there is something special about a mid morning outing to a cafe with no children. MOVIE INDULGENCE This one isn’t exactly a cheap outing but it is fun and kind of indulgent. Find a cinema that offers those reclining seats with in cinema food and wine service, and make a night of it. This is a great gift idea as well if family ask what you’d like for Christmas or a birthday! GO FRUIT PICKING This is more of a day date activity but it is fun and cheap. You can stop by a local cafe for a coffee on the way home too.
12 | familyliving magazine
HIGH TEA Find a local cafe or tea-house that does high tea (the David Jones at Macquarie Centre in Sydney does a great, cheap one if you are near by!) High tea is a little bit sophisticated and a nice little treat for a day-time date. GO TO THE CIRCUS Yes, a date at the circus. No kids. Buy fairy floss, play the laughing clowns and act like a kid again! Chocolate Shop You know those chocolate cafes that sell indulgent waffles, churrios and chocolate strawberries? Find one. Eat there. Thank me later! PLAY 20 QUESTIONS Think you know everything there is to know about your spouse? You may be surprised! Each write down 10 questions and put them in a bowl. Try to keep them open ended. Pull out a question and each of you can answer. Stuck on ideas? Here are some: • What country would you most like to visit and why? • Design your perfect dinner party: guests, food, location etc. • What is your earliest memory? REVISIT YOUR EARLY DATES Was there somewhere you always went when you were first dating? Revisit it!

Five smart ways to spend your tax refund Working out what to do with your tax refund is just as, if not more important than maximising the amount you get back. It is easy enough to spend it all in one go, but these smart ways to spend it will really make an impact on your finances for the year to come. PAY OFF YOUR CREDIT CARD Nope. It’s not super sexy and it certainly isn’t exciting, but using your tax return to pay off debt, particularly high interest debt such as credit cards, is probably one of the best things you can do with your tax refund. It’s not likely that a few hundred (or even a few thousand) dollars will fall into your lap too often, so making the most of your tax refund by paying off some of all of your credit card debt is a smart move. Generally the best approach is to pay off the debt with the highest interest rate first. If your refund won’t cover the whole debt, pay off what you can and then lower the credit limit. If it will cover the whole amount then pay it off and cancel the card! Don’t let it tempt you to fall back into debt. PAY DOWN YOUR MORTGAGE If you don’t have any credit card or other high interest debt, then paying down your mortgage is likely to be the next best option for making the most of your tax refund. If you’ve got an offset account then this is a good place to 14 | familyliving magazine
put your tax refund. It will reduce the interest you pay on your home loan and help you pay it off faster. The benefit of an offset account is that the money is still available if you need it in an emergency (similar to a redraw facility) but don’t be tempted to take little bits and pieces out to pay for things you couldn’t otherwise afford. REPLACE ESSENTIAL APPLIANCES Nothing sends a budget into disarray like your hot water system blowing up or your fridge dying. If you have appliances that are close to the end of their life, now is the time to consider which should be replaced and start looking around for great deals. Using your tax refund to replace an old fridge or an inefficient hot water system can also save you money on your power bills, and reduces the likelihood of overpaying on an appliance because you need to buy quickly in an emergency. If you don’t need to buy anything right now, consider putting the money aside into a high interest account or your mortgage offset so it is there and ready when you need it.
PREPAY BILLS Using your tax return to prepay some of your bills can be especially helpful if you have an inconsistent income. Consider paying ahead on your power bills or putting some extra onto your phone and internet account. If you have kids, you could put aside a terms worth of sports fees or music tuition. Continue to set aside money for these expenses as part of your weekly or fortnightly budget so that you stay ahead and the money you’ve prepaid acts as a buffer. SAVE FOR CHRISTMAS Christmas?! Yep, I just mentioned Christmas in August! Don’t freak out but it is actually only 20 weeks away. How much do you normally spend on Christmas? If you are looking at spending $1500 (which is pretty average by Australian standards), you’ll need to start setting aside over $75 a week from now until Christmas. If you don’t start for another month then that amount will jump to nearly $95 a week! Using at least part of your tax refund to kick-start your Christmas savings isn’t looking so silly now is it!

Nine simple tips to help your child cope with
separation anxiety
thank you to sarah bowen from www.theroutinequeen.net for this article. sarah works in early childhood and blogs about making everyday family life fun and easy. here she shares her experience with separation anxiety and the tips that helped her and her son cope.
I went back to work part time when my son was twelve months old. We were blessed to find a wonderful family day carer and my son absolutely loves going there, but he often experienced separation anxiety when I dropped him off in the mornings. Having worked as an early childhood professional for over ten years I’ve experienced separation anxiety from both sides; both as a carer and a parent, and it’s really hard! The good news is there are lots of things you can do to help. Here are a few things to try:
TRANSITIONING It is important to plan early so that you can transition your child into their new care environment. Most centres or carers offer orientation sessions where you can go along with your child. Try leaving them for only short amounts of time to start with then build on it from there, it helps them to understand that you will be coming back. COMFORT ITEMS If your child has any comfort items (e.g. a soft toy or blanket) make sure you pack these. For babies you can try wearing their comfort item on you beforehand to leave your familiar scent on it. I know some mums who leave one of their own items with their child to reassure them they will be coming back (e.g. house keys or a scarf). STAY TO SETTLE I know trying to get out the door on time for work each morning can be a real challenge, but it’s so important to
16 | familyliving magazine
try and make the time to stay for a little while to help your child settle. It doesn’t need to be long, just a few minutes to help them settle into an activity is usually enough. DISTRACTION Make sure your child has plenty of things to distract them when it comes time for you to leave. My son’s family day carer always makes sure she has a few of his favourite activities ready for him when arrives each morning. He chooses something to do and I wait until he is actively engage until I leave. DON’T SNEAK OFF As tempting as it can be to just sneak off, always let you child know when you’re leaving. If they’re busy and look up to see that you’ve gone it will only heighten their anxiety and build distrust.
DON’T DRAG IT OUT When it comes time to leave let your child know you’re leaving, give them a kiss and cuddle and then leave. Don’t look back, don’t go back. I know this seems harsh but the longer you drag it out the harder it is on the both of you. DON’T SHOW YOUR EMOTIONS As hard as it can be at times try not to get upset in front of your child. They are looking to you for guidance and need to know that it is going to be ok, there’s nothing to be scared of. By all means when you get back in your car let it all out. I’ve been known to have good cry in the car and call my hubby to vent. CALL AND CHECK This one is purely for you. There is nothing wrong with giving your child’s familyliving magazine | 17
carer a quick call during the day to see how they are doing. Just remember that they do have a very important and busy job to do so resist the temptation to call every hour! This is also a great way to distinguish between whether your child is experiencing separation anxiety or is seriously unhappy in their care environment. If they are still upset hours after you leave then this may be something you need to explore.
Just remember that separation anxiety is a very normal part of childhood development. It does get easier and it does pass. My son is living proof!
PICK UP TIME When it comes time to pick your child up make sure it’s a happy experience. Again, it’s worth making a bit of time to stay and play rather than just rushing out the door. Talk to your child about their day, ask them to show you what they played with and be interested.

local business and being able to do this when travelling is an added bonus. The whole resort looks incredible and the island itself is surrounded by amazing snorkelling and diving opportunities.
I was recently lucky enough to come across the incredible Malolo Island Resort, located on Malolo island just 45 minutes by boat from the main island. We’ll be spending a week there in November and I can’t contain my excitement! One of the things that appealed to us most was that the resort is 100% owned by a local Fijian family. We are staying in a one-bedroom bure and the option of having a separate bedroom to the main living area was a major draw card with us as we will be travelling with two young kids. The accommodation is bure style, set amongst lush tropical gardens. Some are only a few lazy steps from the beach and waters edge. Oh I can’t wait!

How to help your child cope with death At some point we all have to face death, and our kids unfortunately will too. Losing a loved can happen at any time and to any one of us. Equipping children to deal with death often becomes an unplanned and regretful necessity. Death is something we usually avoid talking about, especially with children, but avoiding the discussion will not help children to deal with the loss of a loved one. The most sensible thing to do is to treat the death as a normal part of life, but how do you do it? The first step is to recognize that a
Cristiane Lobato Counselling & Hypnotherapy
child’s pain is real and needs support and understanding. A very young child will not understand the permanence of death and will expect a loved to come back. It is up to us as adults to adopt attitudes that will help them to manage these feelings. It is natural to feel sad by the loss of a loved one. The important thing is not to let this pain become something that will harm a child’s emotional health. It can be helpful to include books that deal with death as part of your everyday reading. Don’t wait for the death of someone close to do this. It is very important that children have contact with this subject, and a good way to do this is through stories. Some examples include:

• The Dead Bird by Margaret Wise Brown • Goodbye Mousie by Robie H. Harris • Nana Upstairs & Nana Downstairs by Tomie dePaola When a loved one dies, it can be difficult to know how to discuss the death with your child or manage the days and weeks following. Here are some tips.
IN THE DAYS AND WEEKS AFTER Try to keep the routine as normal as possible. Make sure they are allowed plenty of time to play as well as having one on one time with those close to them. Let your child talk, cry, laugh and play. It is a way to comfort them! It is important that your child realises that they have someone to support them. Consider building a box or book of memories together. Collect and save photos and memories of the person who died and allow your child to play with it when they want. ON THE DAY OF THE FUNERAL Take your child to the funeral if he/she wishes. Bringing flowers to put in the coffin can be a good way of farewell but think carefully about whether to allow your child to view the body. It can be traumatizing for children and may impact on the way they remember their loved one. Do not hide your sadness. If your child asks you the reason you are crying, explain that you are sad because you miss the person who has died, and that you won’t see them anymore. Tell the truth about the cause of death, for example, that he was sick, had an accident, or because he was old. Don’t go into details but be honest. Answer your child’s questions in an objective and honest manner. For example, if they ask: “will I die?” You can answer that yes, but reassure them most people die when they are very old.
The most important thing in the days and weeks following a loved ones death is that you stay attentive to the behavior of your child and their way of dealing with the pain of loss. If the loved one who has passed away was very close to you personally (for example a parent), you may also need to gain support from others who are close to you and your child. When you are dealing with your own grief it can be difficult to assist your children to also manage theirs. Children are often more resilient than we expect, but if you feel your child is struggling to manage their grief or you find yourself unsure how to manage the aftermath of a death it can be helpful to speak with a counselor or psychologist. thank you to christiane lobato for this
