Bowel Cancer: The elephant in the room There are some things we as a society like to ignore or refuse to talk about… We will openly talk about sex, drinking and how much we aren’t happy with our bodies. Yet there is one topic that we need to start talking about more and bringing more awareness too, and that is our bowels. You might be wondering why I want to be all “gross and whatever” and discuss the issue of our bowels with you… Well, June was bowel cancer awareness month and I happen to know the effects of this disease all too well. Bowel cancer is alarmingly increasing every year in Australia and according to Bowel Cancer Australia 1 in 12 Australians are diagnosed every year. Yet, while 90% of cases if caught early enough could be successfully treated, fewer than 40% are actually detected early. I honestly believe that as a society we could increase the number of early detection cases if we actually talk up about it. There are some stigmas about Bowel Cancer that I need to address with you all. Bowel Cancer doesn’t only happen 8 | familyliving magazine
in older people. It doesn’t affect men more than women and it doesn’t discriminate with its victims. Around 203 young people die every year in Australia from Bowel Cancer. My dad became a part of that statistic. He was 41 when he died. In 2010 (aged 19) I got married to the most supportive man you’ll ever meet. While it was a day that should be remembered for all the bliss and happiness, it was instead one where I was filled with worry. You see, it had been two weeks since I last saw my dad before he picked me up to drive me to my wedding. Yet in that time he had lost 20+ kilos and was a shell of the healthy, solid man he was. I knew something was wrong, and the whole time we ‘walked down the aisle’ I kept persisting he tell me. He kept
saying “Pumpkin, not today I will tell you next week, I’m not ruining your day”. So of course I worried. My darkest fears were later confirmed when Dad, aged 39, told me he was terminal with Bowel Cancer. He also went on to say that the type he has was a rare genetic form and his doctors thought that as I was showing symptoms, I too had inherited this disease. I started meeting with specialists and the disease was confirmed through genetic testing and via a colonoscopy. My entire world had been turned upside down and all I could wish for was that this was all one horrible dream and to wake up from this nightmare. On the 10th of March 2012, my 21st birthday, my dad deteriorated more. He celebrated his 41st birthday on the 11th of March. Then at 3a.m on the 13th he passed away.
huge decision to make, it was one easily made. It was either have my bowel removed and live, or have the cancer spread and die. While I was one of the extremely lucky 40% who have theirs detected early, there are so many who aren’t so lucky. With your help I want to change that! I want us to get talking about changes we notice and to feel empowered. There is nothing embarrassing about taking ownership of our health, after all it is only embarrassing because of the stigma we as a society have placed on this subject… the elephant in the room… and it is time we helped each other.
When a first degree relative such as your mum, dad, brother, sister or child has Bowel Cancer, your risk is doubled. In December 2012 I got the results from my most recent colonoscopy; the scope showed that the polyps in my bowel had started turning bad and I had an estimated 6 months to have my entire large bowel removed before the cancer fully turned and spread. I was only 21. While my friends were planning their families or finishing their Uni degrees, I was forced to plan for the life changing, but life saving, surgery. While it was a familyliving magazine | 9
Bowel Cancer Australia says that if any of the following symptoms persist for more than two weeks, to see your doctor. • Change in Bowel habits, frequency, consistency etc • A change in the appearance of stools • Blood in the stool or rectal bleeding• Frequent gas pain, cramping or fullness. • A feeling that your bowel isn’t quite empty • Unexplained anaemia • Pain in the Rectum or Anus • Abdominal pain or swelling • Persistent vomiting Not all of the above symptoms mean you have bowel cancer, there could be something else going on, but regardless you should see your Doctor. Never let a Doctor or anyone tell you you’re too young for bowel cancer or accept this as a reason to dismiss your worries or be an excuse not to investigate. If your Doctor won’t take you seriously, find a Doctor who will! So while this is an issue I know no one wants to talk about, I am hoping that you want to know about it and become aware so that if you do have any symptoms you will seek help. thank you to talya goding for sharing her story and raising this important topic.

Spotlight on… Claire from
The Shabby Chick What did you do before children? My life was very different before children! My background is in Consumer Insights, and I’ve worked in the marketing departments of large companies such as Nestle, and most recently Unilever. I didn’t get my hands dirty, certainly never picked up a paintbrush or a screwdriver. I think I’ve surprised a lot of people with my new career direction! Why did you decide to start The Shabby Chick? I continued my corporate role until I left to have my third child, at which point the juggle of work, commute, school, daycare just wasn't working for me any more. I spent a couple of years being Mum and overseeing our house renovation. It involved paintbrushes AND screwdrivers, and really got me thinking about our style, and how I wanted my home to look. After repainting a few second hand pieces for my own home, I caught the furniture painting bug. I haven’t looked back since then. Did you have an inspiration along the way? I am constantly inspired by everything! Whether it’s the colour of flowers in a garden I am passing, patterns on a dress in a shop window, furniture in the 12 | familyliving magazine
background of a TV set, the really cool pair of gumboots a lady was wearing at the mall, beautiful worn floorboards or a weathered front door … I see the world differently now and my phone is full of random shots of things that mean something to me, if not to you. Then I wait, for the right piece of furniture to come along! How do you keep motivated? By constantly trying to push myself, paint something different, try something new, apply a new colour or new paint finish. When I have a new idea I struggle to not get to work straight away, I can see it so clearly in my head and I just want everyone else to see it too!
When you have a golden 10 minutes to yourself what do you do? Have you taken my phone away? Because if you haven’t I would probably be checking out eBay. If you have I would be getting myself a large skinny latte and walking my beautiful puppy Remy. And hoping I hadn’t missed anything really good on eBay. What’s your favourite thing to do as a whole family? Right now, the real family treat is to eat dinner at the coffee table and watch Doctor Who on Netflix. In this house of 5 humans and 1 dog, I am the only female. If you can’t beat them, join them. We are letting you loose on a shopping spree… where do you head? Bunnings lol MusicPlay is fun today! Break the routine with your kids. Come play and learn in a nurturing fun environment together.
Your best advice or parenting tip? Wow. I’ve spent a lot of time on this question. I don’t feel qualified to give parenting advice. Happy to help you choose sandpaper? Advice on how to balance that juggle of work and life? I’m still working on that. Claire runs The Shabby Chick, creating beautifully hand-painted vintage & one-off furniture pieces. You can find her at http://www.facebook.com/shabbychick/

Stop feeling ‘hit by a truck’
when it comes to a head cold
Simple tips to bounce back faster. For some of us, getting through the year, let alone the winter without a cold seems impossible. How DO you stay strong against germs, when they’re everywhere? Your kids may bring home what's going around at daycare or the school yard. You work in an office and lurgies get shared around, like every year. You often don’t have the time to look after yourself, the kids come first and poor mum and dad end up exhausted and barely functioning through the brain fog.
14 | familyliving magazine
There’s no magic bullet, but research shows some of these strategies help you to protect yourself or get you through a cold faster, if you do get one. Rather than join the crowds in the waiting room at the doctor’s teaming with coughs & sniffles, try building up your resistance BEFORE you get struck with a cold with these easy ideas.
The Holy Grail of Wellness - How do you get Strong Immunity? • Bone Broth is so hot right now! Get onto it throughout Winter or, better yet to save time, outsource that to a grandparent! • Increase Zinc. Research suggests high doses of Zinc help non-specific & acquired immunity. • Good Ol' Garlic. Put it in everything! Stir-frys, soups, & casseroles or just buy some liquid garlic and dose daily. (Parsley is the best antidote to Garlic Breath) • Get the slow cooker out & dust it off. This will be your best friend though winter- food cooks itself, is easily digestible and maximises the nourishment factor in your meals. You also save time, instead of

slaving over the stove, which is fab for the sick & exhausted. Limit mucus forming foods like dairy, bananas, oranges, and greasy foods if you get a phlegmy cough. Rest is Best. Seriously, rest doesn’t mean reading, laptops or TV. If you’re sick, a 30min-1hr Power Nap each day, until better, is prescribed. Drink Up! Slurp Peppermint Tea for a hot, feverish lurgy or Ginger Tea for the chills. Lots of Water. No; coffee & black tea don't count! If you’re feeling terrible, don’t just hang in there, hoping it will improve. Do what you can with this groundwork for good health but if it doesn’t improve, seek medical attention.

Dealing with
overwhelm
START YOUR DAY WELL Make sure you eat breakfast! Mums are often guilty of feeding everyone else, getting everything ready and then running out the door with an empty tummy. Make sure you eat a proper breakfast. Sit down too! The way you start your morning plays a key role in how the rest of your day will unfold. If possible, try having some quiet time and do some breathing exercises

or gentle yoga to set your mindset for the day ahead. WRITE A LIST Our beds often have this magical power of bringing all the thoughts that have been floating around to the front of your mind, right as you are trying to sleep. It’s like the second you lay your head on the pillow you remember everything that you need to do!
Keep a notepad near your bed and jot down things if they all pop into your head at night. Being able to map out what needs doing and see it achieved helps you to feel more in control. BE REALISTIC Be kind to yourself and realistic about what can be achieved each day. It just isn’t possible to be everything to everyone and stay sane. Sometimes something needs to give. DO WHAT MATTERS This is such an important thing when it comes to overwhelm. Work out what it is that matters to you and that will make a difference to your mood and mindset. Work out what it is for you that will make life easier and give you a sense of control and peace. It might be achieving a particular task or having a certain area of your home tidy. Whatever it is, make that a priority. MINIMISE In some ways this is connected to doing what matters. Clutter and busyness breeds overwhelm. Minimising really does reduce overwhelm. Minimise
Our Gift to you
your activities, your “stuff”, your commitments, your responsibilities. Work out what could potentially go and stop it. It doesn’t need to be a permanent thing, just take a break until you feel you can manage it again. FOCUS ON NOW Mindfulness is about focusing on the moment, acknowledging and accepting your feelings, thoughts, emotions and physical sensations. It’s a technique used to help manage anxiety, depression and general mental and emotional health. It can take practice but it is a technique worth learning. ASK FOR HELP If you are feeling close to breaking point and overwhelmed by life, ask for help! Do you have a friend or family member who could take your kids for a few hours? Is it possible to outsource some household tasks? Could you take a few days of annual leave (or have your partner take some)? Don’t be too proud to ask for help!

Money, Money, Money: What to teach your kids GENEROSITY It is so easy to be greedy in today’s society, to want more all the time and to never be satisfied. Teaching kids to be generous is also about teaching them not to be greedy. To not constantly expect (& desire) new and better things. Help them to focus on others, to give with their time and their money to those in need, not to focus on “things” but rather on relationships. SAVING In our world of credit cards and fast loans, saving has gone out the window. We want it all and we want it NOW! Many teenagers wouldn’t even know what lay-buy is, and most adults happily stick something on the credit card rather than saving.
Teach your kids to be patient, to save for something that want. Help them to understand the value of money (and the things that money buys!) Encourage your kids put away small amounts of money each week if they get pocket-money or to learn to “save” via earning rewards (even if non financial) for things they want. BUDGETING Helping kids to understand the concept of money in/money out is a hugely important aspect of their future money management. Many adults have no idea of how much they earn vs what they spend and this is a major contributing factor to the amount of debt we are in as a society. Teaching budgeting can involve showing your children how much there is to spend on a particular area and getting them involved in choosing how to make that work. You could take $20 to the supermarket and explain they need to create a meal for that amount. Help them see that spending over the budget is spending money you don’t have (or that you need the money to come from somewhere else). This can also help children to be grateful and have patience when it comes to items they want.

RESEARCH & BARGAIN HUNTING It is amazing the number of people who will walk straight into a store and make a large purchase without doing any shopping around, comparisons or research. This isn’t about bargaining a business down to their lowest price, but simply looking into available deals and comparing pricing. Price won’t be the only factor but you should know what you are paying for and whether you’re paying too much. Teach your kids about sales and how they work. Explain to them why it is sometimes worth waiting for an item to come on sale rather than buying it right now. Help them to compare prices and products so they understand how to find the best deal and what they are paying for.
INVESTING Along with saving, helping your kids and teens to have a basic understanding of investing is a really wise investment in their financial future. Help them to understand the concept of risk, and some of the options for investment out there. It might be an area that you could learn about together if it isn’t something you are knowledgable on. AVOIDING SCAMS Unfortunately with more technology and the increased emphasis on it, there are now more scams out there than ever. Teaching older kids and teens about some common hallmarks of scams is an important part of helping them to be wise financially. Ultimately, if it looks “easy” or too good to be true when it comes to money, it probably is!

Make sure foods are wrapped well or stored in air tight containers. Remember to rotate food regularly so you use the things that have been frozen the longest. Label and date all foods when you put them in. Don’t put hot foods straight into the freezer. They can cause the foods around them to partially defrost and put you at risk of food poisoning. The higher in fat a food is, the shorter it will keep frozen. Keep your freezer at the right temperature. -18 degrees is ideal.

Allow food to defrost in the fridge overnight rather than on the bench. Don’t refreeze food. Once it has been defrosted, use it! You can defrost raw meat, cook it and then refreeze. Freeze foods in usable portions, it’s much easier when it comes to cooking or reheating. A full freezer is more economical to run than a partially empty one. for more handy kitchen tips visit
