Why second hand is new again Second-hand is seeing a huge revival, not just in Australia, but around the world. Where once second hand clothing and goods were only for those who couldn’t afford new, they have now become a staple feature of most people’s homes and wardrobes. Vintage fashion pieces can be some of the most sought after, and many people are seeing the benefits of buying second hand. Steve Gillespie, from St Vincent de Paul, shared some of the treasures that could be found in their six local stores. “All our shops on the beaches have some wonderful clothing – great labels, good quality pre loved fashion. Everything from shoes, jewellery, books, paintings and so much more. Plus, by shopping at these stores you are helping support those in need.” Supporting charities and those in need is a big motivator for many when looking at where to shop but many choose second hand simply for the price savings and quality available. Sasha Lucius from Pittwater Council, spoke about last years Children’s Toy 10 | familyliving magazine

and Clothing Swap. “We had really good quality clothing – some lovely items, top brands and clothes that had hardly been worn. Likewise, with the toys. As everyone was aware the proceeds were going to charity, everyone attending was very generous. They went into it with the right spirit.” The council is again hosting a Toy and Clothing Swap this June, with all money going towards Roki. It will be held on Sunday the 14th of June from 10-11.30am at Newport Community Centre. So, when shopping for second-hand, what are the best tips to get a great deal? GET THERE EARLY If you are planning to attend a market or second-hand clothing swap, get there early! Everyone wants the best stuff so first in, best dressed... literally! TAKE YOUR TIME Often second-hand stores and markets have a large amount of stuff. Be systematic and take your time when looking. It might take you longer, but looking thoroughly can help you find some treasures others may have missed.

MORE THAN JUST CLOTHES Don’t forget furniture, artworks or other household items. Some amazing bargains can be found on second-hand furniture and household goods from charity stores, gumtree, local buy/sell/ swap pages and more. Look for second hand options before rushing out to buy new. You may be able to find a much higher quality brand name piece for the same as you would have paid for a lower quality new item. REMEMBER WHAT IT’S ABOUT If you are shopping at a charity store or buying from a market supporting a good cause, keep this in mind when purchasing. The money you spend is not just about getting you a great bargain; it also goes towards an excellent cause. DONATE! “We are always looking for people to donate good quality items or even their time in our local stores.” said Steve from St Vincent de Paul. The same goes for events like the Toy and Clothing Swap being held on the 14th of June. If you’ve got children’s items you no longer need, consider bringing them along to swap or donate.

Mum of two, Leila, tells us how she lost an amazing 30kg! Three years ago, you would have found me lazing in bed, lifeless, with no energy, wasting the day away. For years I had been living a very unhealthy lifestyle. I needed something to get me out of the bad habits I had created, not only for myself but my family too. My life’s motto has always been “Live life to the fullest” – a motto I still use to this day, except before I lived my life in all the wrong ways – being overweight, constantly over-eating, no nutritional knowledge, no preparation, no plan, no goals, and no sense of direction. After giving birth to my two children, the weight started piling on. I had various gym memberships, signed up on many weight loss programs, had an endless supply of infomercial equipment, bought so many detox plans, weight loss pills, you name it – I had it! But it seemed to me that instead of losing weight, I was gaining even more kilos. For years I had procrastinated and 12 | familyliving magazine

doubted myself, which lead into negative thinking, a lack of confidence and of course over eating. I ate when I was happy; I ate when I was sad! I made poor excuses for myself all the time. In April 2012 I decided enough was enough. I was introduced to MK Nutrition Systems and was was sold on the concept immediately, purely by the fact that I could pre-plan all my meals based on my health goals. Not long after I became a member, the first 12week challenge was released. I knew that this was the challenge that was going to either MAKE ME or BREAK ME! BREAK ME The first trimester of the challenge tested my limits! I found I was very sore from training, exhausted from my job and sometimes unprepared with my meals. I experienced roadblocks and slip ups but I managed to overcome

I found myself on autopilot by about week seven and was prepping my food without even thinking about it.

certain triggers and temptations. Some mornings, I didn’t want to go to the gym and this is where all my excuses came into play. As I look back, it amazes me to this day how many excuses I made. It made me realise that my attitude and mind set had to change. MAKE ME Over half way through my challenge and after losing a few kilos, I was feeling good, but I knew I had to step up my game. I changed to a membership that included weekly planned meals, which was the best thing I could have done. I started noticing the results almost immediately. I increased my weekly workout sessions and also followed the training sessions set out by MK. Week by week I noticed drastic changes to my body, which created my new craving to keep going. I stopped the moaning and excuses and put my mind, body and soul into both my workouts and my eating plan.

Within 24 weeks, I had lost a staggering 30kgs, taking me from 90kgs to 60kgs. My whole world and outlook on life has changed for the better. This is by far the best thing I could have done for my family and myself. I am living proof that whatever you set your mind to - you will achieve! you can find out more about the program

Five daily habits to keep your home clutter free GO FROM THE CAR TO THE BIN Clutter often comes into our house via the car. Junk mail, random bits of packaging, brochures etc. Make a conscious effort to go straight from the car to the bin to throw out anything that doesn’t need to be inside. DECLUTTER DAILY If you wait until clutter has overrun your home, decluttering it all will be a huge an overwhelming task. Make it a habit to declutter daily as you move around the home. Chuck stuff you don’t need, give things to charity and put things back where they belong. DON’T BUY, BUY, BUY! If you buy it, you have to store it! Think about where you will store something and how it will be used before you buy things. When you buy something new, make it a habit to find something you can get rid of out of your house.

KNOW YOUR CLUTTER HOT SPOTS We all have spots around our homes that clutter easily builds up. For me it is the kitchen bench and dining table. Keep a close eye on these spots. Create a rule that you never put anything down there for putting away later. Get a small box and place it in a location for sorting and storing stuff that needs to be packed away. Once it is full, empty it. Don’t let clutter accumulate in hot spots. DON’T KEEP THINGS “JUST IN CASE” It’s so easy to get caught up in keeping things “just in case” you might need them in the future. Consider these points when you decide if it is really worth keeping: • Would you truly remember you had it AND be able to find it when you need it in the future? • How expensive is it to replace? Is the cost worth holding onto it, storing it etc.?

A daughters journey to fight back against cancer

18 | familyliving magazine

Cancer is a dirty filthy word, and not one that you expect just 5 short weeks after bring new life into this world. That’s what happened when my beloved Dad was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer at 61, just 5 short weeks after the birth of my second child Oliver in 2008.

The shock was indescribable. This was the man that had thrown me up and down in the pool as a kid, had walked me down the aisle with a tear in his eye and had always been such a big presence in all our lives, so to see him looking so frail floored me!

Having had our first Son in the Isle of Man (off the coast of both England and Ireland) I was overjoyed at the idea of having my second child surrounded by family and friends, however Dad’s diagnosis stole that away as I spent weeks and weeks driving back and forth from the Northern Beaches to North Shore Private Hospital with our just 2 year old and newborn Son.

Whilst Dad’s diagnosis was a shock, the path that lead to his eventual death was so much harder. Having been admitted to Manly Waters Hospital for pain management, he died a slow death over 5 short days. As I sat there watching this man who I loved with all my heart become someone that I no longer recognised, I knew that something positive had to come of this.

Dad loved a drink and he loved life, so when he started to loose significant amounts of weight we were all a bit worried. As my little family arrived back in Sydney (I was 32 weeks pregnant) after I had spent 7 years overseas, Dad arrived at the airport in a wheelchair.

Fast forward 3 years (and another baby) and the time to do something to fight back against cancer had come. Finding 7 other women on a Northern Beaches Facebook page that had all personally been affected by cancer, having lost Mothers, Fathers, friends, familyliving magazine | 19

boss’s, Grandmothers and one even having even had cancer herself, was the beginning of the fight back. In July 2014, Fight on the Beaches (our fundraising group raising money for Cure Cancer Australia) held our first ever ‘Christmas in July’ Charity Ball. We raised a massive $100,000 for cancer research. What started as a dream to get me through the last few days of Dad’s life became a huge event that 400 local people attended, 350 businesses donated to, 50 volunteers helped out at and countless people supported with cash donations. I have to admit that if I had known what it would take to raise $100,000 I would never have started! Three young kids and a full time (unpaid) job don’t

really mix! As my boys were 7 & 5 at the beginning of all this, they definitely felt Mummy’s absence. I was still there to pick them up from school or take them to their activities but every night and every weekend I would be in front of my computer begging for donations, sponsorship, assistance or plain old cash! I had to continuously remind them why I was doing this, and whenever Poppy’s name was mentioned as the reason for my mental absence it would all be OK again. On Australia Day, my Husband, my two boys and I had the opportunity, along with my fellow Committee members, to attend the Warringah Council Australia Day Awards. There we won the ‘Community Event of the Year’ Award and I had to make a speech.

I am embarrassed to say I started to cry during the first paragraph and my first thought as I did was ‘what will the boys think?’ I hated the thought that this recognition and my subsequent emotional reaction, might make them sad about their dear Poppy. That fear was allayed as my now 8 year old told me how proud he was of me, and that of course I would get upset talking about Poppy. How wonderful children are. So what’s next? We are going to do it again! Who can look at another $100,000 for cancer research and say ‘oh, we are too busy to do it all over again!?’ Our second annual ‘Christmas in July’ Charity Ball will be held on Friday 17th July 2105 at Miramare Gardens, Terrey Hills from 7pm-midnight. The gorgeous Georgie Gardner will be hosting the

night with Vic Lorusso stepping out of his helicopter and onto our stage as auctioneer. Jellybean Jam will be rocking the dancefloor all night long so wear comfy shoes. So if like me, you too have been affected by cancer we would love to have you involved in some small (or really big) way to fight back against cancer. You can donate a prize which we sell or auction on the night, you can buy a ticket (or table of up to 12, volunteer your time to work at the Ball, or make a cash donation. Get on board and do your bit to fight back against this insidious disease. to find out more information please visit www.fightonthebeaches.com

You know you are a mum when... We asked some local mums what funny or unexpected things define their lives as mums. Here’s what they had to say! • Using the toilet becomes a family affair, where your children attend incase they miss something. • You’ve answered the door with a boob hanging out… and just continued on as if nothing happened. • When going grocery shopping without children is like going on a mini holiday. • You become a triathlete each morning just to dress, feed and brush teeth before leaving the front door • A great morning is getting out of the house with the same clean clothes you put on only 1 hour ago. • Instead of running from projectile vomit, you run towards it. • You do more in six minutes than most people do all day. • 12 minutes in a hot shower feels like a full day in the spa.

Our Gift to you

• Your kisses become magical and all healing. • You have super powers and can hear a cough in the middle of the night, across the hall and two rooms down. • A big Friday night is when your kids have been asleep for at least 1 hr before you go to bed! • A glass of wine counts towards your daily fruit consumption total. • You find yourself still watching Dora even though the kids have been out of the room for 20 minutes. • When things like, ‘don’t eat your sisters hair’ or get your head out of the toilet’ become everyday sentences. You know you’re a mum when words can’t describe the love you have for your dirty, messy, cheeky children and your heart could literally explode!
