How to keep work/life balance when working from home

When I first decided to start working from home, I imagined a life with the perfect work/life balance. I could prioritise being a mum to my preschoolers while still growing a profitable business. Somehow I’d also keep my husband happy and have time for myself.

The last couple of months I have been following some strict rules to keep work/life balance, and it has been working out very well.

I have been working from home now for nearly a year. The rose coloured glasses I had on in the beginning are now fully off. In hindsight, I think I forgot to factor in time to actually do work in my daydreaming. Whether growing a business online or offline, it is hard work. Initially, I had some of the worst work/life balance of my life. Yes, I was able to stay home with the kids, but I wasn’t really present. Work was always on my mind, and I was constantly on my laptop.

SET “OFFICE HOURS” AND KEEP TO THEM Decide which hours are going to be your working hours and be strict about keeping to them. Do not let your work time blur into the rest of your week. It doesn’t matter what these hours are as long as you are disciplined about keeping to them.

It took me longer than it should have to realise that my work/life balance was terrible, and it needed to change. 6 | familyliving magazine

Here are my rules to help you keep work/life balance while working from home…

CLEARLY DEFINE WHAT TASKS CAN BE DONE OUTSIDE OF OFFICE HOURS Things do come up that just cannot wait to be done in office hours, or you may risk your business. It is best

to clearly define what these are or otherwise you may find yourself working on things that aren’t that important at times you haven’t set as “office hours” and put your work/life balance at risk. PRIORITISE TASKS EFFECTIVELY One of the ways I stop my work life from interfering with my home life is to prioritise my tasks effectively when I am working. Anything that directly earns me money is first, writing content is second and then everything else falls behind that. You need to work out what tasks are most important to your business and ensure you complete them first. NOT EVERYTHING ON THE ‘TO DO’ LIST CAN BE DONE TODAY If your to-do list is anything like mine, then it is loooooong. I write shorter ones for each work day, and I still rarely get through the list. I have had to learn to accept that that’s just how it’s going to be and not to just keep working until it’s done. As long as I have prioritised properly, then I have learned to accept that when my working day is over, I need to stop.

OUTSOURCE If you have the budget, outsource what you can. By this, I don’t just mean getting a virtual assistant, designer, accountant, writer or whatever it is you need for your business, but outsource at home too. A weekly cleaner can save you a lot of time and stress and give you better work/life balance. Working from home can be awesome. It offers flexibility for great work/life balance, as long as you follow some basic rules and stop work from taking over your life. this article was written by sharon from work, home, life. you can find more tips

Parenting with empathy: One mothers journey

Don’t tell anyone, but from the moment I got this parenting gig, I’ve been desperate to make it easier! I launched into it armed with my years of nannying and thought... Sit back everyone. I’VE GOT THIS! Well, it turns out my gung-ho confidence made it about ten times harder for me to accept that being a parent is tough! It’s beautiful and extraordinary, but let’s face it, you are shaping a human being, and you have to make massive decisions every day that may or may not impact their entire future. You have to do all of this sometimes on 2-3 hours sleep and throughout it all, you’re still just you. A human being... But so are they! I didn’t have an exact parenting style I was planning to adhere to. There were certain things I was clear on and I was trucking along, as what I hope was a 8 | familyliving magazine

pretty decent parent until we hit age two and I found myself, once again, out of my depth! A friend put me on to a page that helped me further hone in on a style. I wanted to be a Peaceful Parent and things were going ok, but there didn’t seem to be a lot of room for error. Luckily in amongst it all I was led to a website where I found a one-sizefits-all amazing parenting approach. It had plenty of ‘dust yourself off and try again’ advice. The approach really did fit every child. You don’t believe me do you? There’s no such thing I hear you say! You can’t say THIS child will respond to something when they are completely different from THAT child! However, all children have one thing in common. They are little human beings. They are human beings who come

out of the safety and warmth of their mother’s womb into a world that is busy, confusing, scary and sometimes has rules even as parents we don’t fully understand. They develop and struggle with the same emotions we have. Big, overwhelming emotions that are often too much for adults! It is a lot to expect from a little human. The one-size-fits-all parenting approach is actually really simple. It’s all about parenting with empathy. You put

yourself in your little ones shoes and see how they are looking at a situation. When you do this enough, you start to understand and connect with your little one and then you know how to lovingly set limits and boundaries together. Children naturally want to please their parents; it may not always seem like it but ultimately they do. This desire is often at odds with their quest for independence or their poor impulse control (that doesn’t fully develop until age 16 and is practically non-existent under age 3). One of the biggest things I have learnt is to choose your battles. What are your non-negotiables? If it’s dangerous, is there a safe way to engage in a similar activity and are you able to redirect the situation? Spend a lot of time using play as an outlet for ‘undesirable’ behaviour and for power-reversal that is a great tool to help them feel like it’s not always us vs them. The three most invaluable resources I have come across are the Aha Parenting website (www.ahaparenting. com), and the books ‘Peacful Parent, familyliving magazine | 9

Happy Kids’ by Dr Laura Markham and ‘Playful Parenting’ by Dr Lawrence Cohen. Like all parents, I am not perfect. There will always be moments you are not proud of, but I can honestly say this approach turned my life around just when I needed it and having used it from birth with my second, I can see the difference. It all comes down to remembering that they are people just like us and we are their whole world. this article was written by chantal from www.auntyask.com chantal is a local mum to two little ones who she’s trying to raise as peacefully and gently as possible.

Five of the best family travel destinations HAMILTON ISLAND

JERVIS BAY Head south for the crystal clear waters and white sand of Jervis Bay. This popular family destination offers great beaches, beautiful national parks and easy access to many other south coast attractions and wineries. There are many camping, cabin and self-contained options as well as a few larger resorts to suit any family.

With a huge range of accommodation options and 100’s of activities for kids and adults of every age, Hamilton Island is a top pick for family holidays. You can find self-contained apartments on Stayz for as little as $220 a night and there are reguarly discount flights with both Jetstar and Virgin making it much more affordable that many people realise. Consider staying on the marina side of the island in accommodation that includes a buggy. The kids will love it and they are much more affordable than resort side rooms. The resort pools are only two minutes away by buggy & most appartments have pools.

Choose an apartment rather than a hotel room so you can prepare some meals at home. Some of the resorts have such good facilities you’ll never need to leave. Mantra Sun City even has it’s own waterslide and Paradise resort is literally paradise for kids and adults alike!

FIJI If you’ve got a larger budget and can stretch to an international flight, then Fiji is a great choice. It’s only a four-hour flight from Sydney that is achievable with young kids. Accomodation options

are endless, ranging from high end resorts to simple beach bungalows and standard hotel rooms. The Shangri-La resort and spa is absolutely stunning and a popular choice. PORT MACQUARIE

Within easy driving distance from Sydney and with a range of accommodation options from camping and cabins through to resorts, Port Macquarie and surrounds is an affordable holiday spot with heaps to do. In summer, there are great beaches to explore but even in winter you won’t be short of things to keep the family busy. Go strawberry picking at Ricardoes, visit Timbertown or take a drive to the Bago maze. The Big 4 parks in the area offer great value accommodation.

Top Tips for Packing Light 1.  Plan what you will wear – you don’t need lots of choices for a short trip. 2.  Take clothes that you can combine and wear in multiple ways, like denim shorts and patterned t-shirts. 3.  Remember whatever you pack you’ll need to carry. This is especially important if you are flying. 4.  Mini sized or sample versions of toiletries save room. Most hotels have shampoo, conditioner and shower gel provided. 5.  Check your luggage weight! Remember to leave room for purchases or you could end up with a hefty excess luggage bill.

16 | familyliving magazine

6.  Wear your bulkiest clothes on the plane. 7.  Consider buying disposable items (like nappies, baby wipes, etc.) at your destination. 8.  Choose luggage that is light and flexible. Ideally expandable for holiday purchases. 9.  Check what you can take in case it’s more than you expected. Things like bonus luggage for babies and toddlers can make all the difference! 10.  Don’t forget your phone charger this article was written by holly from the website www.simplifycreateinspire.com

A Survival Guide to Flying with Kids FLY AT BEDTIME Try to book a long haul flight close to their sleep time. This will increase the chance of them sleeping on the plane and also of them being well rested to cope with the changes of a new destination. AVOID MEDICATIONS The use of medications with kids on planes is a contentious issue. However, it is strongly recommended you do not use a medication unless approved by your dr and you have trialed it prior to the flight. It can have the reverse effect and cause a hyper child. EXPLAIN, EXPLAIN AND EXPLAIN If your child is old enough, start talking to them about the flight and the expectations. Once they know the flight will involve a long period sitting then they will react better to cramped conditions. Relate it to an experience that they are familiar with e.g. a long car ride or the time it takes to watch a movie on the TV.

ENCOURAGE SLEEP Encourage your child to have a sleep when they board the plane. This is often the quietest most settled time of the flight. Changing into pyjamas and asking the hostess to hold off on serving the inflight meal will assist the process. USE HEADPHONES Bring headphones! The noise of the plane works for some children lulling them off to sleep, for other children it really bothers them so some quiet familiar music will help. If you have multiple children a Y-shaped jack for an iPad will allow more than one child to use and listen to content at the same time saving many arguments. ASK FOR YOUR CHILD’S MEAL FIRST What can be better than juggling sub par food and a wriggling child? Remember to order a child’s meal and request that it is delivered prior to your meal. It is too difficult to have to help your child and try and eat at the same time.

familyliving magazine | 17

INTRODUCE YOURSELF TO STAFF Make yourself known at the gate before boarding. Most airlines will allow families to board first. If you are travelling alone, it will be best to board first. If you are with another adult, allow them to board with the gear and get set up and then you board last which means it is less time to be stuck in a small area. REQUEST THE BULK HEAD SEAT If it’s not available place your child in the window seats. This will give them a distraction as well as not having hot food served over them and no chance of being bumped by the trolley while they are sleeping.

FEED DURING TAKE OFF AND DESCENT Breastfeeds/bottles and dummies help equalise ear pressure. For older children having them say aaah and drinking using a straw have the same effect. KEEP TOYS SMALL AND FREQUENT Wrap the toys individually and pace how you introduce them to your child. Make sure you have exhausted each toy before you show them a new one. Remember you have the entire flight to occupy them. CONSIDER A CAR SEAT If your child is old enough to have their own seat, then many parents opt to bring a car seat for them. This can be particularly helpful if they sleep well in their car seat. REASSURE AT SECURITY Remember the security experience is stressful for adults. Security personnel can be scary for young children so remember to explain to them that they will have to walk through a security gate, explain how it work and that it won’t hurt and they are not in trouble.

DRESS YOUR CHILD IN LAYERS Dress your child in layers that are comfortable. Allow EXTRA nappies, changes of pants, underpants, a HUGE packet of wipes and shoes. Include plastic bags in your carry on luggage to contain soiled clothes if necessary. Allow for more than you expect – trust me!

18 | familyliving magazine

REMEMBER THE FLIGHT WILL END You don’t know anyone on the flight and at the end if it all goes horribly wrong you can claim your luggage at the carousel and never see those people again. this article was written by michelle from the website www.geeyourebrave.com

The Value of Student Travel How do we teach our children gratitude, social responsibility and the desire to help solve problems in the world around them; rather than contribute to them? According to Roseville’s Head of Outdoor Education, it is imperative that young people from advantaged societies learn that they have a responsibility to others simply due to their own position in life; it is not a passing fad, but a lifelong accountability to have concern for the wellbeing of others who are less fortunate. “On the North Shore, our young people grow up in an environment where their basic human needs are met every day and their human rights are upheld by the fiber of society. Compared with the vast majority of teenagers around the world, they are supremely fortunate,” she says. With Antipodeans Abroad, Roseville’s students spend the year before their trip researching their destination and its people, as well as fundraising for a particular project to which they will contribute. “There is a distinct difference in their personal motivations when they return. It has moved from complaining about how long homework takes, who has the latest iPhone or who drives what car… to finding their place in the world, setting their sights on a goal for study and career, and managing their time and priorities to achieve it.” Roseville College senior girls can participate in a range of student travel experiences such as Antipodeans Abroad educational volunteering expeditions, sports tours and history tours.

At Roseville College, girls from Kindergarten to Year 12 engage in enriching learning experiences that challenge and embolden them to pursue and attain their personal best in all areas of life. Graduates from Roseville College are typically vibrant, confident, articulate, independent young women who embrace life’s array of opportunities with energy and enthusiasm. Ranked among NSW’s top schools, Roseville College has transformed the lives of girls for more than 105 years. 27 Bancroft Avenue, Roseville 9884 1100 enquiries@roseville.nsw.edu.au

A Guide to pocket money THE PURPOSE OF POCKET MONEY One of the first steps in deciding how pocket money will work in your home is to decide on its purpose. Is it to teach a child to understand the value of money, to learn about saving, to become more generous or thankful. Are you using it as a reward or payment for chores? What is your goal? Once you know what the purpose of pocket money is in your home you can then decide on how it will work. WHAT IS POCKET MONEY TO BE USED FOR? This question will help shape how much you give (particularly for older children or teens). Are they expected to use their pocket money for outings, activities, clothes or gifts? What level of general contribution to their expenses does their pocket money account for? If you expect it to be used for all entertainment and activities as well as gifts for friends and family then you need to consider the cost involved in these expenses and work out a suitable amount of pocket money. 20 | familyliving magazine

WHAT DO YOU DO TO GET IT? Is pocket money just handed out without the expectation of anything in return? Is it chore based or reward based? Does your child lose entitlement to some or all of their pocket money for undesirable behaviour? Personally I like the idea of pocket money being chore based with basic chores that form part of being part of a family and then “pocket money chores. They are on top of the regular everyday stuff and need to be done in addition to those jobs to earn pocket money. WHEN TO START When to start giving pocket money can be a difficult decision. We are about to start with our 3-year-old, not for the purpose of getting chores done but to teach about saving and giving. I want him to learn to save his money and also to give to those in need. I am hoping he will learn to value money for what it provides and can give to others and in turn to be thankful and not wasteful.

HOW MUCH TO GIVE This depends somewhat on what it is used for, but a good suggestion is a dollar for every year of age. This may need to be expanded for older kids if they’re expected to use pocket money for most activities and gifts. Perhaps set a baseline amount for general chores and then give the opportunity to earn additional funds. You could pay based on time. So a child may earn $X an hour for certain activities, just like they would in the workforce. However you choose to manage pocket money remember that it’s for more than just spending. Use this time to teach your children about saving, giving and charity, written by michelle from an organised life www.keepcalmgetorganised.com.au
