How To Cut Your Grocery Budget Aside from housing, groceries are most families biggest weekly expense. The amount you can spend is literally limitless, and if you enter the supermarket without a plan you are doomed to fail from the start. Learning habits that cut the cost of the meals you prepare can save you hundreds at the supermarket. MEAL PLAN Meal planning saves time, money and reduces waste. You can plan a specific meal type for each day of the week to ensure you have variety (Monday is chicken, Tuesday is pasta. etc.). REDUCE YOUR MEAT INTAKE Most people eat too much meat. You don’t need a kg of meat to serve a meal for a family of 4. Use lots of vegetables, beans and pulses to bulk out meals and serve them with rice or couscous to keep the big eaters full. CHOOSE CHEAPER CUTS OF MEAT Slow cooked meals using cheaper cuts of meat are delicious and easy to make. If you don’t have a slow cooker, consider buying one. The savings in meat will make it well worthwhile.

BAKE AT HOME Pre-make snacks, muesli bars and other goodies. Choose things you can freeze or that will store in an airtight container for the week. NEVER SHOP WITHOUT A LIST Write a list (and stick to it!) If it isn’t on the list it doesn’t go in the trolley. You can make an exception for essentials you genuinely forgot but in general stick to the list. COOK IN BULK AND FREEZE Having some meals ready to go in the freezer is a great way to save money and reduce the urge for take away. This

Wife, Mother, Lover. after kids?

Romance

Kids and Romance?!…A word, the definition of which we know, but its role in our lives after kids leaves us with a slightly confused feeling. We love our children dearly and investing in them is a high, if not the highest, priority for most parents. I often work with couples who say that their children are exhausting, and they have no energy left for each other. The most important lesson we give our children is the lesson of loving relationships. Children learn so much more by observing, than by us teaching them. A child’s parents are their most influential role models regarding marriage.

1. HOW DO YOU FIND THE ENERGY?

So what kind of role model are you? What kind of role model could you become?

2. FILL UP YOUR OWN TANK FIRST

Here are the five tips that will allow you to find energy and ignite your marriage; you might even find room for romance.

Words have hypnotic power over us. When you tell yourself that you have low energy, you feel low energy. Energy is a mindset. The stories of not having enough, or of wanting something else drain our energy. We think we want a different life instead of loving the life we have Decide now that you have enough energy for romance and start cultivating this intention.

The oxygen mask on an airplane goes on you first before you can help another. We are helpless when we are depleted. It is not the children exhausting the parents; it is the parents not taking care of themselves.

The 3 rules of romantic dating

1. Dress to impress, get ready as if it was your first date. 2. You cannot talk about the kids, the business or the house on your date! 3. Chose a place where you can connect, visually, verbally and physically. What are you going to talk about? Go to Amazon.com and type in “Table Topics for Couples.” These cards will help you start a heartfelt conversation with your partner that is about you and your spouse. 8 | familyliving magazine

Create child-free time, daily moments of couple interaction, exercise or just take five minute to breathe. Plan. Don’t wait for it to happen spontaneously because it won’t.

need to change to make that your reality? Sit with your partner and create a vision for your relationship. What would you like to enjoy together? How would you like to feel?

3. MAKE YOUR PARTNER A PRIORITY

5. WHAT HAPPENED TO PASSION AND ROMANCE?

Actively cultivate love and appreciation to your spouse. Spend few minutes a day while in the car, on your way to work or in the shower thinking about what you love about them.. Ask and answer: What do I love about my darling? Why he/she is so special to me? Why do I love them? By actively answering these questions, you generate love in your heart and become more loving. 4. CREATE A NEW VISION FOR YOUR DAY Describe what a great day would look like? How would it be different from what you have now? How would a relaxing or fun day look? What would WEDDINGS

PARTIES

SPECIAL OCCASIONS

You can’t have a passionate love affair if you don’t feel passionate about your life. Turn yourself on, and I don’t mean sexually. Are you passionate about your life right now? Is there something that really excites you? Is there a new project, a new course, a new trip, a new job, a new adventure that you can’t shut up about? A Guide to Childcare Everything you need to know to make the right choice for your family. Navigating the many options available and determining what rebates apply can be confusing. This short guide will help you make the best choice for your family. You can read the full guide at keepcalmgetorganised.com.au WHAT TYPES OF CARE ARE AVAILABLE?

Approved Care: This type of care is

eligible for both Child Care Benefit (CCB) and Child Care Rebate (CCR) Registered Care: This type of care is eligible for the registered care rate of CCB but not CCR. WHICH CHOICE BEST SUITS ME? Long Day Care (approved care) This is probably the most common form of formal childcare. Hours of care range but are generally long, and they open for most of the year. Fees range from around $85-$150 a day and age based. Nappies and food are generally provided. Family Day Care (approved care) Provided in a carer’s home. Carers must meet guidelines for their homes safety, education programs and care standards. There is a limit on the number and ages of children who can be cared for at once. Hours vary and can often be quite flexible. Fees are around $6-10 an hour.

10 | familyliving magazine

Occasional Care (registered care) Childcare for irregular or small amounts of care. Generally session based with shorter hours. Most occasional care centers don’t qualify for approved care status, but some do so it is worth checking. Fees vary and are generally hourly or session based. Expect to pay $10-15 an hour. Preschool/Kindy (registered care) Usually exclusively used by 3-5 year olds and running the same hours as school, following school terms. You can expect to pay $50-65 a day for preschool.

food for thought

you can use a mix of care options. if you have more than one child, it may be more economical to have them in daycare three days and with a nanny two days due to the $7500 limit on the ccr. if you are paying for two kids at $120 & $140 a day it will likely work out

cheaper to hire a nanny for those days as you will have used all of the ccr.

Nanny (registered care if the nanny registers) A personal carer who comes to your home (or that you share with another family in their home). Each nanny will determine their own rate. Rates vary from $16-30 an hour depending on location and the nannies experience and qualifications. WHAT ARE THE REBATES AVAILABLE & AM I ELIGIBLE?

Child Care Rebate Eligibility: Not means tested. Can receive it even if you receive $0 for CCB. Rate: 50% of out of pocket costs up to $7500 per child.

If your child is in approved care you If your child is in registered may be eligible for: you may be eligible for: Child Care Benefit Eligibility: You need to meet an income test. To get over 24 hours a week you also need to meet the work/study/ training test. Rate: Means tested. Up to $4.10 per hour, per child.

care

Child Care Benefit (registered care) Eligibility: Not means tested but both parents must be working/looking for work, studying or training. Rate: 68 cents an hour for up to 50 hours a week.

The holidays are all but over, but my kids seem oblivious to the impending routine that begins at 7.30am tomorrow; the return to school. Right now the kids are wearing their pyjamas at 11.30am with no intention of getting dressed and little regard for the time of day. It’s only me who is thinking of the morning to come and the list of tasks as long as my arm. Here are ten tips to get organised for back to school. DO THE WASHING Make sure all of the school uniforms are clean, dry and ready for wear. COLLECT SCHOOL UNIFORMS Locate everyone’s items and stack them into piles and leave them prepared in an easy to find place for the morning to come, right down to socks and underwear. CLEAN SCHOOL SHOES Make sure they fit, and your kids know where their shoes are too.

GET OUT EVERYONE’S LUNCHBOXES AND DRINK BOTTLES Now is also a good time to check these items are in good order too. DO A BAKE UP FOR LUNCHBOXES Take the stress out of lunchboxes and bake some freezable snacks to get you by for the first week. CLEAN OUT SCHOOL BAGS If you haven’t already, check all of the pockets for nasties like old lunch items, soggy papers, etc.

CHECK YOUR PLANNER Do you know what is on for the first and second weeks of term? You don’t want unplanned surprises at 7am on a Monday morning. ORGANISE YOUR CAR Did you go away on the holidays? Is your car still full of luggage and bikes? Make things smooth for the first day back by cleaning it up and checking everyone’s car seats are in order.

FINALISE YOUR SCHOOL NOTICES Does a child have a camp or excursion notice that is overdue? Do you have payments for school items or events to organise urgently in preparation for the week? MAKE SURE BELONGINGS ARE LABELLED Check your children’s jumpers and other items to make sure they are actually yours and are labeled.

The Housework Workout After giving birth to my first child, it became glaringly obvious to me that finding time and motivation to exercise can be downright tricky. I realized that I needed to start incorporating exercise into the endless housework chores that now made up my day as a mother. And so, I created The Housework Workout. A few things to note when doing this Housework Workout: 1.  Yes, you will look like a complete dag doing it. Embrace it. Crank up some music, have fun, let the endorphins fly. (Your children will think you are the most entertaining person in the whole world, and isn’t that what matters most?!) 2.  You can wear whatever suits. If you are still in your PJs, don’t waste time changing, just get moving. 3.  Retrain yourself from thinking that you don’t have time for exercise; instead tell yourself that exercise will give you time. Studies have proven this. People who exercise are more productive than those that don’t. Why? Because exercise gives you energy. Surviving life as a parent requires energy, so we need to stay active. LAUNDRY SQUATS As you load and unload the washing machine, squat down to do so. Stick your bum back as you squat down, pretending you are going to sit on a chair. As you come up, squeeze your butt cheeks together. Keep your knees straight over your toes and don’t let your knees go forward over your toes. KITCHEN SINK GLUTE ACTIVATION I don’t know about you, but I feel as though I spend hours standing at the kitchen sink. Now and again, do some 18 | familyliving magazine

Laundry squats glute activation exercises. Squeeze your butt cheeks together and hold

for 5 seconds. Build up the time you hold for. Repeat as many times as you wish, each time thinking “I am getting a beautiful toned bum and

this is really good for supporting my poor overworked back”.

DISHWASHER LUNGES Whenever you need to unpack the dishwasher, you can throw in at least a dozen lunges. Lunge down and collect an item or two from the dishwasher. Keep knees and toes pointing straight ahead with your back knee dropping straight down as you lunge. As you go up and down, think about keeping the weight in the heel of the front foot and squeeze the butt cheek of the forward leg as you rise.

TOY TIDY PELVIC FLOOR SQUEEZES When you are crawling around the floor picking up the countless toys, take the opportunity to do some pelvic floor squeezes. The all four position is a great way to really focus on squeezing the pelvic floor. Squeeze and hold for a count of 5 seconds then relax. Build up the time you hold for. Repeat as many times as you want. More the better! HIGH DUSTING CALF RAISE

eezes

If you need to reach a high shelf or do some abovehead dusting, stretch up on your toes and add in a few calf raises. This exercise won’t change your life or your body for that matter, but it’s a good one for circulation and restless legs often associated with pregnancy.

STAIR RUNS Did you know that people who live in houses with stairs are, on average, three kilos lighter than people who do not? This is a great example of how incidental exercise can add up to benefit your health. (If you are of the bigger busted type, this one is the exception to my “don’t bother changing out of your PJs” rule. You’ll need to throw a bra on for this one!)

School Readiness To send or not to send?

What will tomorrow’s successful adults need to be like? Experts suggest they will need to have the ability to feel confident and competent in new situations, be self-starters, decisionmakers and possess a strong sense of self-worth. According to 75 percent of respondents to the World Innovation Summit Education Survey, children’s interpersonal skills will be their most valued future asset. Most importantly, the ability to work with other people, share information, debate and problem solve are considered essential life skills that will enhance children’s lives in the future. It’s worthwhile considering all of this when in the throes of deciding when to send your child to ‘big school’, as I am with my daughter who was born 22 | familyliving magazine

in March 2010. Her birthdate puts her right on the fence of either being sent to school in 2015 or staying put in preschool for another year. According to the authors of “Is Your Child Ready for School?”, a child’s readiness for school depends on a whole range of factors including their interpersonal skills, how well the family functions, nutrition and early learning experiences. So, what to do? I thought it best to cover all my bases. I re-enrolled my daughter in her current preschool for 2015 and then for good measure, enrolled her in the next-door primary school and another primary school just out of area. While attending orientation days at the two local primary schools, emphasis was placed on personal and social

skills versus the academic ability of the child, as these skills could be taught. I wondered - could I encourage my daughter to share, take turns and play co-operatively with others within a couple of months? Would she listen to the teachers and do as she was told? I needed to know how to fast-track the personal and social skills in my daughter if she was going to attend school in 2015. According to the authors of “Playing and Learning to Socialise”, “children need to learn to learn to wait their turn, share, resolve conflicts, manage anger, stand up for themselves appropriately and be socially confident. If they do not learn these basic skills in the early years, it can affect their development.” I arranged playdates for my daughter and encouraged her to dress up and play. I took her to innovative play centres, where the focus was on developing the child’s emotional and social skills through dress ups and role-play. It is thought that role-play like this engages with your child’s emotions, cognition, language and sensory motor skills. It also helps your child to discover their

own leadership skills, acquire language ability, problem solve, develop empathy, explore their imagination and build social skills. So, what did I decide to do in the end? The Preschool Director helped me a great deal in making my decision. It was her guidance in a frank discussion that made me see the light. “Your daughter is ready for school. She has displayed great resilience and the ability to make friends. There have been no episodes of crying, separation anxiety or tantrums. In essence, she’ll be fine at school.” We decided that we should take the plunge and send our daughter to ‘big school’ in 2015. I am hoping that she will have the opportunity to develop the skills and resilience required of a successful future adult… watch this space… written by neva poole. neva is a freelance writer and social media content producer who can be contacted on 0410 347 545. she is currently writing for wannabees family play town and smart
