THE GATHERING PLACE I live in Brookside, with a tiny square kitchen — that you will never see — so I can only imagine what it must be like to have a sensational new or remodeled kitchen at my fingertips. No matter how many years have passed or what trends have come and gone, one tradition has stayed strong — the kitchen as the heart of the home, the go-to gathering spot. And that’s precisely why these homeowners put so much TLC (and money) into our seven featured kitchens. From contemporary to rustic in style, with custom storage features to open shelving, and subtle soapstone counters to a glitzy Azul Marinace Fusion granite top, these kitchens are perfectly put together in their high-end design and details. The Zender residence, shown here, received close to a whole-home remodel, with increased focus on the kitchen. Their desired “clean and crisp” kitchen now provides plenty of space for friends and family — a main request in kitchen design. (I obviously love it; look how happy I am.) Find the first of many kitchens on page 27. Accompanying our kitchens are dining rooms that are as well-arranged and colorful as a professional dinner party menu. You’ll find cozy breakfast nooks, adjoining seating areas and formal dining rooms. We’re also sharing a tasteful butler’s pantry, bars, kitchen gadgets and accessories to ensure that you have all the right equipment to make the main-level entertaining space a huge success. For 2015, additional content comes in the form of a new interior design department, along with our current ones and some that have been revived: State of the Arts, Healthy Living and Wine Connoisseur. We’re continuing to dive deep into the realm of pertinent, beautiful and inspiring editorial content for our readers. Cheers to a happy and prosperous New Year!

SERVING UP STORAGE Purposeful and pretty kitchen accessories need a place to stay when not in use. An Overland Park couple repurposed their bar with rustic beechwood (in a sepia stain), Cambria countertop and colorful hand-painted backsplash tile from International Materials of Design. “The drawer configuration is unique; some of the drawers open together, giving deeper or wider storage depending on the homeowners’ needs (for liquor bottles, platters, wine, bottle openers, etc.),” says Katie Ott, AKBD, designer/co-owner of Kitchen Studio: Kansas City. The glass-front cabinets at the top display wine and other specialty glasses. Located between the entry and family room, it’s a convenient place to pop the top and entertain in style. Turn the page to find more clean and clever kitchen designs and decor.

ENTERTAINING Think creative casual — and always outside the box. Don’t be daunted by entertaining at home. Casual chic has replaced formality, and today’s trends make it easy to pick and choose a focus. Here, three local design experts share some of the latest entertaining trends so you can create a welcoming fete in your own home — without the starch and white gloves.

EFFORTLESS CHIC
When contemplating format, think creative yet casual. “The road more likely traveled in 2015 is one of laid-back, express comfort that doesn’t sacrifice chic but defines it in a fresh way,” says Alycia Nichols, principal designer for Tablescapes at Table Twenty-One. Think interactive: Family-style dinners or food stations are a great way for guests to mingle. Kenneth D. Sherman, vice president at Trapp and Company, suggests testing an idea before going all-in. “Experiment by yourself before you try it on your guests…Be creative!” 20

INTERACTIVE EATS
Instead of trying to tackle a five-course meal or appealing to all tastes, be selective and try to make the food entertaining in itself. “We’ve seen a rise in specialty food stations, such as a s’mores bar,” says Ashlie Van Hoecke, creative director at Blue Bouquet. “And if budget allows, catering is the ideal approach. It takes stress off the hosts and allows them to enjoy their guests.” Interactive food stations with chef attendants are popular, Kenneth adds, because many dishes are assembled or finished with the guests watching. “It’s a fun time for questions and learning about different food techniques,” he says. Also on trend: cocktail buffets, tapas and themed buffets.

SIGNATURE STYLE
Before stocking up on a variety of beverage options, consider a simpler option: the signature drink. “The open bar — a very expensive and sometimes confusing venture — has been usurped by the signature drink. Exotic fresh juices, sparkling fruit or herb-infused waters, and home brews are also on the uptick,” Alycia says. You also can focus on one kind of beverage and build a bar around it, Kenneth says. “Mixology is big — how about a champagne bar? Just think of all the drinks that you can create with champagne.”

En-vogue tablescaping is all about mixing materials and layering for a look that creates warmth and depth. “Mixing metals is very on trend right now, especially incorporating rose gold. It looks great with both silver and gold and is a fun twist on traditional decor,” Ashlie says. For flowers, think unstructured. “Flowers are still the hallmark of poise and charm on a table, but they are now more freely arranged in interesting vessels and share the stage with thoughtful memorabilia or artifacts that might reflect the theme of the event,” Alycia says. The botanical and organic look is in, Kenneth adds. “Multiple collections of flowers down the table create a garden look. Greenery, herbs and produce also can be just as effective as flowers,” he says. Candlelight is being presented at multiple levels and clustered, Alycia says, and creatively layering textured linens is also on trend.

ON THE TABLE
Planning a Valentine’s Day event?
Think tons of candles and fragrance such as lavender and rosemary, Kenneth says. Ashlie suggests breaking away from traditional red and incorporating gold, as well as placing your flower order early because the best blooms move quickly. Your event doesn’t have to be just for two — think about hosting a couples’ dinner or a single ladies’ night, Alycia suggests.

Homeowners create a stylish entertaining space for their thoroughly modern family. Story by Kimberly Winter Stern Photos by Matt Kocourek Location: Olathe
The formula for home transformations on television is familiar: A designer swoops in to reimagine a hopelessly clunky layout…and then some. rooms are equipped for maximum relaxation, entertaining and interaction. And when the big reveal arrives as a breathless designer fluffs the last pillow before the homeowners reach the front doorstep, anticipation runs high: Will they love it? Last April, a Johnson County couple yearning for a home on a lushly treed lot met their real-life personal design challenge when they stumbled on a 6,000-square-foot Victorian home for sale in Olathe. The home — which was Victoriandrenched, both inside and out — was built in 1997 on an ample lot and needed a mega-dose of TLC before the enterprising homeowners could move in with their three daughters and a Spanish foreign exchange student scheduled to live with the family. “We saw the house’s definite potential,” says the homeowner. “It had the outdoor space we wanted and lots of room.” Builder Troy Moore, owner of Madi Mali Homes and a resident in the neighborhood, kcathome.com | JANUARY 2015

showed the couple the property. He knew the home fulfilled two of the must-haves on their short list: a large yard and plenty of room for a busy family. “We looked at other homes for sale, always through the lens of a remodel,” Troy says. “But when we toured the Victorian, they could envision themselves living there” — of course, not until Troy’s team got its hands on nearly every inch of the house, from top to bottom. The house had top-notch bones but needed a scrubbing. Mauve and green wallpaper was removed. Kitchen cabinets were demoed. Floors were stained, and trim was painted. The first floor flow, once dissected by a cumbersome and unattractive kitchen peninsula topped in green formica that isolated the family room from the kitchen, was opened up to create a distinctive entertaining space. “No doubt this house underwent a major renovation,” he says. “There wasn’t a room we didn’t touch — and the results are spectacular.” As is the case for most families, the household’s primary action takes place on the main level. The redefined kitchen now boasts a large custom island, outfitted with a prep sink and Jenn-Air gas cooktop, which is a focal point for morning coffee, meals, after-school snacks and plenty of lively conversation. Three large pendant lights complete the island area’s design. The revised flow between the great room and the kitchen is seamless, with open sight lines and a synchronicity that makes entertaining a pleasure for the homeowners. “We spend more time around this island than any other room in the house,” one homeowner laughs. “It’s large — 9 feet by 5 feet — and has double-width cabinets on the front and back. Sometimes we have our main meal here; sometimes the girls do their homework here.” Super white quartzite tops the island, a material that wasn’t the homeowners’ first choice. “I wanted marble, but my husband insisted I would drive the family crazy with its
The original trim and wainscoting received a paint job, while new crown molding was added around the great room ceiling. The comfy leather couch made its way from the old house, but 6-month-old Luna is a new addition.

In lieu of a fan, one homeowner bought a large fixture with an industrial flair that is suspended from the 20-foot ceiling on a down rod. “The design is in keeping with the room — it’s a comfortable space,” she says. “This light actually took me the longest to find, but when I saw it at the Ferguson gallery, I knew it was the one.” The formal dining room, once heavy with bulky window treatments, is now a sleek room defined by black walls and punctuated with a modern chandelier. “Although we haven’t done a lot of entertaining since we moved in last May, we’ve done enough to know that this layout works,” the homeowner says. “We use the dining room during the week, just for the family, and have hosted small dinner parties, too.” The homeowner considered the dining room’s black walls as a necessary design risk. “I figured if I didn’t like the color, I could easily change it,” she says. “After all, it is only a coat or two of paint, not a lifetime commitment.” Barrel-style black leather dining chairs are juxtaposed against a custom Missouri-made Amish table, while dark-stained redwood floors anchor the space. Troy notes that the renovation was full of surprises for him and his crew. “Essentially we were undoing someone else’s work, and we found lots of flaws,” he says. “In the end, we were able to give the couple the home of their dreams. It’s a beautiful Victorian, we just had to dig a bit to find its personality.” When the family moved in last August, following nearly four months of construction, they added one more family member. “Part of the deal when we decided to move from our former house to this one was a dog,” the homeowner says. “So we got a cavapoo a couple of weeks after we got settled here. The puppy has christened the house, but that’s OK. This is a house where real life happens.” Indeed, the transformation for this Victorian received

A Historic Gathering Place Story by Veronica Toney | Photos by Matt Kocourek | Location: KCMO
An early-1900s Craftsman home receives a modern makeover.
HISTORIC HOMES ARE FULL OF CHARM, character and also design challenges. That’s what two homeowners discovered when they bought a Roanoke neighborhood home originally built in 1907. Lisa and Greg purchased the home in August 2013 and had a plan to modernize the kitchen and first floor in four months, just in time for a December party. But they soon found that the walls of their historic home were hiding a lot of surprises. The first: outdated systems. “The previous homeowners purchased the home in 1969 and hadn’t updated it,” Lisa says. “We started renovating the first floor, and everything had to be replaced — heating and air, plumbing, drywall, electricity. There were holes in every single wall.” Once the mechanics of the home were updated, they could focus on keeping the home’s original Craftsman character while giving it a modern
The homeowners had to redesign their original kitchen layout in order for the hood above the stove to vent outside. In the first plan, the main sink was intended to be along this wall. The kitchen is divided into three workspaces: the primary kitchen, support kitchen and pantry.

makeover. The plan was to open up the kitchen by removing a wall that separated it from a laundry room. That’s when they discovered the second surprise: a pillar. “You have to be open to what you discover,” Lisa says. “The pillar down the middle [of the kitchen] changed the entire plan.” General contractors Joe and Mary Thompson of Architectural Craftsmen reworked the design to keep the pillar, using it to distinguish the workspace from the entertaining space. The two openings, which were once an exterior door and a window, now determine the flow of traffic through the space. The cook moves from the main sink to the stove to the island without disruption, and party guests can congregate in the kitchen on the opposite side of the island. “The kitchen has to be designed for the cook, and we did that,” Greg says. Removing interior walls and drywall not only changed the plans for the space but also exposed the kitchen’s third surprise: limestone. “The stone is such a unique item of the house; it takes a lot of age to get a stone wall to look like that,” Joe says. “It became a talking point [of the home].” Once the walls were set, they created three distinct areas that flow from one to the other. “The primary kitchen has the range and the island, while the

provided quarter-sawn oak cabinets to match the original woodwork, while Matt Kirby, a local artisan, replicated the original woodwork throughout the house to keep the home’s 1907 Craftsman design. New trim is made from quartersawn oak, and the flooring is updated with quarter-sawn white oak. “If you’re going to make something new, honor the original style of the house so when people see it, they say it could have been original,” Mary says.

and cleanup. The butler’s pantry became the place where you can serve from,” Mary explains. “It helps to focus on the function of the space.” New and updated cabinets add storage throughout the kitchen. Quarter-sawn oak cabinets in the open area match the original woodwork of the main level, while white cabinetry brightens the pantry and holds entertaining supplies. New stainless steel appliances modernize the entire space. A large refrigerator sits flush with a stone wall to maintain the flow of traffic. A six-burner range with a vent hood is key when preparing Sunday dinners and holiday meals for their “large Italian family.” But of all the new appliances, their favorite is the Advantium oven from GE. “It’s a microwave, convection and conventional oven all in one,” Lisa gushes. With all the modern updates, the homeowners, contractors and designers all kept the home’s original charm and character in mind. “If you’re going to go into an older house, you need to listen to what the house says,” Joe says. “In 50-100 years, it will still look timeless.” This is something the homeowners agree was worth the surprises and stresses of remodeling. “We’re just a steward of the home,” Lisa says. “There are plenty of places to change, but if you want a historic home, you have to respect it.”

at a Charlotte Street Foundation sale for $25, and five years later, that artist’s collections are in museums and showing in national galleries,” she says. More art can be found at First Friday Art Walks in the Crossroads and the Hobbs Building in the West Bottoms. The other way to start collecting is to hire someone to help navigate and show you what’s good and what has value. “For example, when I’m hired by a private client, I’ll go in their home and we’ll casually chat. We’ll identify key walls, and I’ll observe their surroundings so I have a sense of their taste and how they live,” Toma says. “So if you have the resources but no time, I’ll bring artists’ profiles and their works in front of you. I’ll show you who’s established and who will keep their value over the long haul. And if

Example of the story behind the work: In French artist Maia Flore’s series Sleep Elevations, she wishes to emphasize the attraction a girl feels toward her new, boundless surrounding and the lightness of the reality she is entering into. Her contorted movements are meant to articulate a contrast between physical limitation and the limitlessness of imagination
THE NEW ART SALON Kansas City architect Scott Heidmann is a great example of a happily obsessed art collector, whose vigor for the beauty of life is expressed by his infectious, roaring laugh. This quality, combined with his honed eye and gracious spirit, makes him the perfect host of Heidmann Art Salon (HAS), which he co-produces with his creative collaborator Kenny Petti of Brand 7. “Our endeavor is to create a social mix of artists, collectors, new enthusiasts and creative people from all walks of life, all together in intimate evenings that celebrate, showcase and introduce an artist or artists,” he says. “I want to reignite the art of conversation and the conversation about art. “The evenings are experiential, sometimes working with a theme infused into the installation via place, space, food or music relevant to the elements,“ he says. Scott recently co-chaired the Kemper Museum’s 20th Anniversary Gala, ROAR, and possesses a loyalty to local artists as equally as the global art community. He never stops taking in art or sourcing inspiration, whether it be from museums, galleries, social media, magazines, studio visits, performances or everyday life experiences — an important cue to follow if you too strive to collect. 62

fuller-bodied fish, such as salmon, or with chicken, pork, lamb, duck or steak. (We did say versatile.) A bigger red choice is the Sheridan Vineyard cabernet sauvignon from Washington. Its dark fruit and ample tannin make it a great partner for any rich treatment of meat. A fitting finish to a casual dinner is the refreshing Saracco moscato d’asti from Piedmont, Italy. It’s fizzy and somewhat sweet, great by itself or to accompany any dessert.

Cru like the Louis Jadot Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeot Clos de la Chapelle Duc de Magenta (yes, a mouthful). For a sublime example of pinot noir, the Hirsch “San Andreas Fault” Estate pinot noir from California’s extreme Sonoma Coast is delicious now or for aging a few years. For a fuller-bodied red, here’s something special — the Chateau Musar red wine from the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon. This is a masterful old vines blend of cabernet sauvignon, cinsault and carignan. The 2004 is the current release in our market, so it’s ripe and

For a basic home gym design, Rick Vemmer, president of Fitness Showcase in Overland Park, suggests a treadmill, stationary bike and a single-stack weight gym. With this setup, “You’ll have a variety of cardio and strength-training options,” he says.

If a luxury home gym is more your taste, Rick recommends upgrading to a multistack weight gym and adding an arc trainer and water rower to the basic setup, as well as a set of dumbbells and a multiposition bench. Popular home gym equipment brands are True Fitness for cardiovascular training and Tuff Stuff International for strength training, says Cale Van Cleave, sales representative for Fitness Gallery in Overland Park. A well-liked elliptical machine is the TRUE ES700. It features a programmable console for interval training and course simulation so you can customize your workout. Beyond just tracking your heart rate, it actually keeps it at the desired training level, maintaining your heart rate at that level for the rest of the workout. “This allows the user to get the best workout every time on the

machine without having to think about it,” Cale says. For strength training, the Tuff Stuff AXT home gym has a fitness-center feel, with an all-frontal design that is space-efficient. You’ll get a full-body workout, with stations for arms, chest, shoulders and abs, along with a variety of leg developers. “If you’re looking for safety, the stacked gyms are the way to go,” Rick says. It can be dangerous to work out unsupervised with some of the free-weight setups, he explains. Cale says some other products that are trending are foam rollers, stretching bands and plyometric (plyo) boxes, all used to add targeted development or intervals to your workouts and small enough to be tucked away close to your equipment. Equipment is an important component, but the location (and cleanliness) of your home gym should be a top

consideration. “Be sure the space is inviting, well lit and clean,” Rick says. If it’s dark and dingy, you won’t be motivated to work out. It’s also important that you consider what types of exercises you truly enjoy. “If you don’t enjoy the exercise program, you won’t stick to it,” Cale says. You can look to the past to get an idea of enjoyable exercises, but don’t go into it expecting to do the same workout you did in high school or college, he warns. And talk to your doctor before you begin an exercise routine to make sure you are cleared for the types of exercises you’re planning. With clarity regarding the necessary equipment and a thoughtful, energetic room to house it, a fun and functional workout area can be a sought-out space in your home.
The Tuff Stuff SPT-6X Six-Pak Trainer is a popular home gym because of its many features. It offers unlimited functional and strength-training routines, while its free-flow handle design gives it friction-free movement.

Ever consider turning an old tire into a stylish ottoman? Leanne did. Her enthusiasm for what she calls “decorating with a conscience” turns trash into treasure through easy-to-follow project ideas. Check out her inspirational blog at DivaofDIY.com. If she looks familiar, you’ve likely seen one of her popular weekly segments on KSHB-41’s Kansas City Live. If you somehow miss Leanne or just can’t get enough of her ideas, be sure to also attend the Johnson County Home + Garden Show in February at the Overland Park Convention Center, where she again will be a featured expert. If your home design plans include the outdoors, be sure to tour the butterfly house and learn how to design gorgeous gardens that will attract hundreds of butterflies to your own backyard. Don’t forget your camera! The Water Garden Society of Greater Kansas City will once again build a freestanding water garden showcasing the many aspects and benefits of water gardening and the latest in statuary and creative design ideas. Pets and outdoor living spaces are a perfect match. The Pet Pavilion will focus on products that will improve your pet’s health and the services needed to keep them safe, happy, socialized and in optimal health. It’s all about the

special creatures that make our lives complete. Want to make your pet the envy of the block? Be ready to bid on “Extreme Pet Homes” designed and built by members of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) and inspired by Kansas City personalities like Joel Nichols and Michelle Davidson, co-hosts of KC Live on KSHB-41. The pet homes will be on display in a silent auction throughout the show with proceeds going to KC Pet Project. The KC Remodel + Garden Show runs Friday and Saturday, Feb. 6-7 from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. each day and Sunday, Feb. 8 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Tickets are $10 for single-day admission at the door; children 12 and under are free. Friday is Hero Day, when active and retired military, fire and police personnel will be admitted free with a valid ID at the information desk.

Soft and Flowing Collecting ideas and information for that home they’d someday build. Last June, that someday finally came to function. The Callier’s home, in southern Leawood, is a culmination of extreme planning. Each and every detail of the two-story house, is well thought out. With a purpose and a meaning for each and every item of the home. Working closely with Scott Harder of Harder Construction Inc., the Calliers knew exactly what they wanted. While the exterior elevation of the Leawood, Kansas home is impressive, the interior is what really sets it apart. Contrary to so many oversized Kansas City homes that are “furniture poor”, the Callier’s interior environment is tastefully decorated from top to bottom. Truly, a refreshing departure from many other upper-bracket custom built homes in Johnson County. Working with Sarvis Interiors, and Expressions Custom Furniture, in Overland Park, Jolian Callier used her many decorating talents to enhance the new home’s interior. “I wanted a contemporary look, but without a cold, unwelcome feeling.” said Jolian. Mixing pieces from their previous Overland Park home, Mrs. Callier beautifully blended Art Deco furnishings with pieces of Oriental and several antiques. What could seemingly end up as an eclectic hodgepodge, smoothly flows together in a sea of harmony. An interior design that truly works together, not apart.

Soft and Flowing black and white tile offer a contrasting balance to the Corian countertops and sinks. As with the rest of the Callier’s home, indirect and cove lighting was used in the kitchen to help warm the room. One of the Callier’s favorite “custom features” is the first floor hot tub. Always heavily used by both themselves and guests, the Leawood family wanted one that was indeed easy to use, and out of nature’s way. Thus, a built-in tub just off the kitchen and sunroom was made-to-order. Besides the exterior, a great deal of natural materials were also used inside. Breathtaking custom fitted black granite, not only welcomes visitors in the expansive entry, but is generously used on the great room fireplace as well.
Below…Subtle tones are used throughout the home’s main living areas. Here, the peach tones and round-back chairs, soften the table’s hard edges. Left…The kitchen, sunroom and breakfast eating area flow nicely together, while still remaining distinctive.
With over 6500 square feet of finished space, one can easily find their own space inside the home. With a two-story configuration of 4 bedrooms and 7 baths, the idea of entertaining friends and family seems ever present. “It seemed like every time our family got together, everyone ended up in the kitchen. So, we knew we needed a great deal of space in that particular area to accommodate everyone,” explains Mrs. Callier. With over 1000 square feet, alone, allotted to the kitchen and sunroom, finding room is not a problem. Beautifully bathed in peaches and pinks, the massive cooking center remains anything but sterile. Underfoot, in the kitchen and sunroom, lies a beautifully durable porcelaino floor. The 18 x 18
