SEASONAL TRIMMINGS When it comes to holiday decorating, people are often inspired by high-fashion store windows, popular movies, culture and technology. Don’t be surprised to find ornaments and decor inspired by The Great Gatsby (1920s fashion, fur and fringe) and Disney’s Frozen (blue color palette and icicles). Others, however, appreciate the beauty of traditional colors and decor. This vignette at Nell Hill’s showcases red berries, frosted holly leaves and pinecones (natural holiday decor is popular this year); large wooden dove finials; and red, gold and diamond/pearl-encrusted ornaments — all wrapped in ribbons of red, silver and burlap. Whatever your preference, you’ll find a smattering of styles and accessories in this holiday issue.

memories and stories to share. The dining room, in all of its greenstriped glory, is elegantly put on display by a tree that Jobi found at an antique store in Leawood. Styled with ornaments and feathers, the decor complements the table’s centerpiece, with ornaments, decorative balls, real and artificial greenery, pinecones and sticks from the lot across the street. A strand of battery-operated lights gives it a glow at night. The great room showcases a traditional Christmas

The 11-foottall live concolor fir succulent is annually purchased in Wichita from Treetop Nursery, a place she was told has an exclusive contract with a New Mexico farmer. Above: The tabletop under the main staircase is a magnet for sentimental decor. Jobi’s grandma, who passed away in August 2013, hand-painted a green ceramic tree that she remembers decorating as a child. “Gram” was also a fierce competitor in the gingerbread-house decorating competition. “So much of the Christmas season reminds me of her,” Jobi says. Ron’s gingerbread house from last year’s competition sits in front, with dog-toy stuffing and fishing line cleverly used to make smoke billowing from the chimney.

“I love the unique look of it, but the main reason we get it is because it’s a succulent,” she says. “They build a 2-by4 stand for it at the nursery; we bring it home, stand it up and decorate it. It doesn’t drop needles, and it never has to be watered.”

Chuck and Anna Naylor embrace the home where they raised a family, updating it with new style to fit their current lifestyle.
Story by Kimberly Winter Stern Photos by Matt Kocourek Location: South Leawood
Jake Schloegel has seen it before — the syndrome he dubs “the empty-nester thing.” “It’s that moment when a couple realizes the home where they raised their family no longer suits their lifestyle,” says Jake, owner of Schloegel Design Remodel of Kansas City. “People think they need to sell the house and downsize, but what they probably need to do is right-size their current residence.” Jake, whose company has weathered recessions, housing market crashes and changes in approaches to remodeling for 34 years, notes that most people invest in three homes during their lifetime: the starter, the family and the empty nest. “After the kids are grown and vacate the house, many homeowners head for a villa,” he says. “However, I’m seeing more and more people stay put and re-evaluate their living space and see if it can somehow be reinvented.” Chuck and Anna Naylor fit Jake’s empty-nester profile. The couple lives in a 3,800-square-foot house they bought in 1995, a home that has received updates over the years, small projects to address needs as they raised their four children who now range in age from 18–26. “Initially we finished the basement,” Chuck says. “We wanted a room where the kids could gather with friends, away from the main living area.” The Naylors are the fifth owners of the home, which was built in 1984 and, according to Anna, had a less-than-ideal The Naylors gave the hearth room’s ceiling box beams a refresh and painted the walls a striking green. arrangement. “The house has terrific bones, but the layout was choppy, there was a sunken breakfast area off the kitchen, and the room that is now the great room was

paneled and closed off,” she says. “It wasn’t favorable to our sprawling family.” Over the years, Chuck and Anna kept chipping away at their remodel to-do list, embarking on efforts to reconfigure the home to complement their lifestyle. Finally, in the mid-2000s, the Naylors decided to put down the anchor and get serious about staying. “Like a lot of our friends, we considered building a big house,” Chuck says. “But we love South Leawood, where we’ve lived for 30 years, and our neighbors and neighborhood; we didn’t want to leave.” The Naylors installed a pool, redid the deck and knocked down a pesky wall that separated the kitchen from the rest of the main level. “We realized that instead of moving, we wanted to stay,” Anna laughs. “And then, in 2012, we started evaluating a major overhaul.” Enter Jake, a longtime friend of the Naylors whom the couple hired to guide them through the daunting remodel process. First item on their wish list: Transform the first level’s claustrophobic, poorly proportioned floor plan into a functional, airy space to accommodate family get-togethers, frequent houseguests and the Naylors’ penchant for entertaining a large network of friends. “We removed a major structural wall between the kitchen and great room, 18 feet total,” Jake says. “The kitchen was reformatted, and the peninsula island was replaced with a large island conducive to meal preparation.” And that was the beginning of the Naylors’ main-level reawakening. The once-compartmentalized house was opened and flooded with light. The kitchen’s dated honey oak floors were replaced with new hardwoods, and original floors throughout the remainder of the 2,000-square-foot space were stained to match. Clunky cabinets were removed and replaced with custom cabinetry from British Traditions, and Calacatta Gold marble was installed on countertops for a sleek, modern ambience. Thermador appliances, including a

six-burner gas range, were added to enhance Anna’s cooking and cleanup. Perhaps the pièce de résistance in the kitchen and breakfast room is the bold black and cream paisley wallpaper that Anna chose, which lends the space an unusual character. “I didn’t want to paint the walls,” says Anna, who worked with Jake’s wife, Debby, of Schloegel Decorating Resource. “I was confident with this pattern.” Box-beamed ceilings in the great room were stained and glazed to infuse the space with a rich, elegant charm. Walls were given a fresh coat of luxe-green paint that punched up the room’s vibe and showcases the limestone fireplace that received a makeover during one of the Naylors’ previous remodeling projects. An underutilized bar space off the great room was refreshed with mosaic Carrara marble tile, while refrigerator drawers were installed to hold sodas, beer and other beverages. The Naylors added a small wine refrigerator and updated cabinets for glassware storage. “This is a great example of a space that

wasn’t very practical,” Chuck says. “All it needed was a little re-imagination.” The once-lackluster library was re-engineered as a distinctive masculine space outfitted with comfortable chairs and tasteful sports memorabilia. “The black walls really work in this room,” Anna says. “It adds an element of surprise.” The Naylors agree that turning the tables and working on a professional level with a friend doesn’t always go according to plan, but the relationship with Jake and his crew, including project manager Gabe Chiu, was seamless. “Jake and his team had this job completed to the day he promised it,” Chuck says. “Communication couldn’t have been better, and the quality of the remodel speaks for itself.” The Naylors are thrilled they decided to remain in a home that has sentimental family roots but simply needed a bit of inspirational TLC to redirect its agreeable personality. “The result is fantastic,” Chuck says. “This is the home we always wanted. And now that our family is grown, we’ve redesigned it to fit the next phase of our life.” For the Naylors, the heart of their inviting and warm, new home is when they welcome family and friends for parties and impromptu barbecues. “Now our space is a true reflection of us and our lifestyle,” Anna says. “It’s a home we can grow into.”

JULEP Scott Tipton: Curator of Cocktails Harkening back when Petticoat Lane in ole KC was a reality, Scott decided to revive the memory with his version of times past. Scott, voted one of the top 10 mixologists to watch by the Beverage Media Group (2012), is passionate about assisting Julep, Westport’s own cocktail hideaway, with their bar program. He also owns and operates Liquid Minded Concepts, a craft beverage consulting company for those who want to tweak their crafting skills.
Petticoat Lane: 1 oz Laird’s apple brandy 1 oz Rittenhouse rye whiskey barspoon St. Elizabeth Allspice Dram barspoon sugarplum syrup Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass with ice; stir for 15 seconds, strain over fresh ice into double old-fashioned glass. Garnish with flamed orange zest and miniature candy cane. For the sugarplum syrup, add equal parts turbinado sugar and water to saucepan, along with dried fruits (apricots, figs, plums) and spices (allspice, clove, cinnamon). Simmer until sugar is dissolved, about 10 minutes.

THE AMERICAN RESTAURANT Paige Unger: Cocktail Queen In this town, Paige’s reputation precedes her. Perfecting drinks demonstrating strong culinary backbone is her gig (garnering awards along the way). As bar manager at the venerable American Restaurant, Paige takes over Willie Grandison’s position after his 40-year tenure. Big shoes to fill, but this Queen rules. She toasts us with her version of eggnog.
Eggnog: 1 c whole milk ¼ c heavy cream ⅓ c sugar 3 fresh, large eggs ¼ high-quality spiced rum Fresh-grated cinnamon, clove and nutmeg to taste Whisk egg yolks until they lighten in flavor. Gradually add sugar until dissolved. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, bring milk and cream to a boil. Stir occasionally. Once milk is boiling, remove immediately from heat and slowly add the warm milk mixture to the whipped egg yolks and sugar mixture to temper. Return the mix to the medium saucepan and bring to 160 degrees. Remove from heat and let chill. Once the mixture is chilled, add spiced rum. Grate fresh nutmeg, clove and cinnamon to taste. Add spices and rum last so their flavors shine through. If you want to take the extra step, save your egg whites and whip them with a teaspoon of sugar until soft peaks are formed. Add this very last to the eggnog to give it a bit more texture.

Shawn Larson: Stirred, Never Shaken Shawn is a true people person. “That’s one of the advantages of my position. I love the atmosphere and getting to talk with people, locals and out-of-towners.” It’s all about having a great time at RA, a tingling place to heighten then drink your spirits. If people ask, he’s all about making suggestions for those with discerning palates and other assorted liberals who are game to try something new. Shawn admits his most challenging drink is the bartender’s mojito. Regardless, he’s still a good muddler.

VOLTAIRE Ryan Miller: Skillful Bar Man Ryan is a softy, confessing, “The holidays are about togetherness.” He gets plenty of acclaim as the bar man extraordinaire at edgy Voltaire. Meanwhile, when he’s not on the clock, “I really enjoy having friends and family over during the colder months to look back on the year and reminisce. What’s better than beverages already prepped and ready for your guests?” He’s a stickler for fine ingredients and makes sure mixings are up to his standards. We present his festive party punch.
Party with a Punch: 4-6 lemons 1 c demerara, turbinado or any other raw sugar 1 750 ml bottle of Calvados (suggestion, Berneroy VSOP) 1 c Barbados rum (suggestion, 5-year offering from Plantation) ½ c rainwater Madeira (suggestion, Broadbent) 2 oz cranberry syrup* 2 bags ginger tea 2 bags Earl Grey tea Fresh nutmeg Cinnamon stick, cloves, water Day-ahead prep: Fill a punch bowl with water and freeze. Peel lemons and cover with sugar. Muddle mixture and let sugars dissolve into the lemon oil. Day of: Brew all tea bags in boiling water. Juice lemons, strain. Pour the lemon juice into a bowl of lemon oil mixture to dissolve all of the sugars. Stir well. Pour lemon mixture into a sealable container. Add cranberry syrup. *In a small saucepan, simmer 1 cup water, 1 cup sugar, 1 cup fresh cranberries and one cinnamon stick. Press the berries with the back of a spoon to help incorporate the tart goodness. At the hint of a boil, remove from heat and allow to cool. Strain off the solids, bottle alcoholic ingredients and refrigerate. Stir well to incorporate all ingredients and pour in the brewed tea. Taste and adjust accordingly. Take bowl out of the freezer, turn it upside down and loosen the artful ‘cube’ from its mold. Place cube in the center of your favorite punch bowl. Remove your punch patch from the refrigerator and gently pour over ice. Garnish with cloves, nutmeg and any other festive spice/fruit wheel you wish.

COCOBOLOS Jeff Lichtenberger: Art of the Crafter The bar is Jeff’s lab. Drawing on years of experience, he gets a kick out of mixing at CocoBolos. It’s one thing to serve up the tried and true, but Jeff, like his mixologist peers, riffs on how to concoct a drink with a unique twist. He is happiest showcasing the power of his inquisitive mind and nimble hands. Using his bar staff as a sounding board, he’s not afraid to take suggestions. For this, he’s taking us south of the border with his Leche de Arroz, or milk of rice.

There’s a rustic elegance to the Barnds’ excavated cozy wine cellar.
A Way with Wine
These homeowners have an affinity for wine — and a top-notch place to store it.
The entrance is located in the lower-level living room — it’s an unexpected hidden gem for first-time guests.
Story by Miun Gleeson Photos by James Maidhof Location: Mission Hills
Ron Barnds is a wine connoisseur who knows the basics — like how wine simply ages better in a big bottle — and is a seasoned host who loves entertaining and believes in the simple idea that “wine should be drank in your lifetime.” His appreciation of French wine (“I like a big, heavy wine”) and keen knowledge explains how he had amassed 1,000 bottles of wine before the 13-foot hole was even excavated to begin construction on the wine cellar in his home. “If you stuffed it to the gills, the cellar would hold 2,000 bottles,” Ron says. He’s been able to break it down to what that would look kcathome.com | NOVEMBER 2014

like: 1,200 bottles of standard-sized 750 ml bottles, 600 magnums and probably 90-100 smaller liter/big presentation bottles. But this is purely hypothetical. “I like to buy wine, so you don’t want it ever full, and you can change things up,” he adds. Located underneath the kitchen, the cellar features 10-foot natural wood ceilings, with can lighting overhead that illuminates the space. Designed by Ron and his wife, Laurie, the project took three months, with the goal to create an inviting space. Ron, who owns a facility management company and likes to “remodel, build, take things and fix them,” has extended his business philosophy into the overall design aesthetic of the 24-by-12-foot-wide cellar. The space called for some discerning design decisions that are faithful to this personal vision. “I like archways, round corners, and I like things natural — my house is all stone, brick and cedar,” he says. The result is a seamless blend of textures, prominently featuring heart redwood custom cabinetry that neatly houses and displays the massive wine collection. The floor is paved with Kansas flagstone, and the wall comprises recycled white oak barnwood from Excelsior Springs. There’s even a historic nod to the 1938 home in the cellar, with one wall featuring the exposed limestone foundation of the original house. It was power-washed, tuck-pointed and

Ron’s Tips for Entertaining with Wine:
• Everybody wants something different when it comes to wine. Have a good variety on hand: pinots, cabs and burgundy wines. • Make sure wines are all open and allow ample time for breathing. • Restock often! Ron restocks every other Sunday. • Keep the wine collection novel and interesting for future entertaining. He says a riddling rack is one way to display new bottles, but make sure to give them the occasional turn. • Wine is a good go-to for host/hostess gifts. Ron always takes three wines, typically one white and two reds.

FOR THE
HOLIDAYS
“Women Serving and Supporting the Community”
Johnson County Young Matrons has had the great fortune of hosting the Home for the Holidays Homes Tour for 23 years. “JCYM has a 53-year tradition of serving Johnson County through handson volunteer activities and fundraising efforts,” says Dianne Seltzer, JCYM president. “We distribute 100 percent of our profits to our philanthropies and JCYM scholarship recipients. The homes tour, boutique and special event, Wine, Women and Wishes, are our main fundraisers. We are grateful to the homeowners, designers and underwriters for their contributions and to the individuals who purchase tickets, shop at the boutique and attend the special event.” Tour co-chairmen Kathy Hood and Annette Burnsides have selected four beautiful homes to showcase on this year’s tour. “We are so thankful to have found such lovely homes and homeowners,” Annette says. “The commitment

necessary to prepare a home for this tour is huge, and we sincerely appreciate all the time and effort given by the homeowners. Their willingness to open their homes to the entire community is a shining example of their desire to support their community through our philanthropies.” This year’s lineup includes four homes in four different communities. Those communities include Wilshire Farms, Mills Farm, Deerbrook and Highlands Creek. Each of the homes has its own style. One home is styled like an Aspen Lodge, one is transitional/contemporary, and the last two homes are traditional but depart from one another in their unique decor. “We believe those attending will declare ‘That is my favorite!’ after seeing each home,” Annette says.

Dining Room Tablescape Designer: Anne-Marie Reid, Z Gallerie “This season the trend in table settings includes the layering of mixed and matching pieces in like color schemes. For example, our Ibiza dinnerware collection in red pairs really nicely with our Sophia dinnerware in persimmon. The plates are different yet both have touches of gold, creating a stunning tablescape.”
Kitchen Tablescape Designer: Jayme Tomlin, Celebrating Home “Most of us do more entertaining during the holidays than any other time of the year. Our events and memories center on the table and the Christmas tree. Renewed optimism, the return of the ‘gold rush,’ combined with family traditions will both play an important role in our decorating choices. Originality and creativity are the key words for the 2014 holiday season.” kcathome.com | NOVEMBER 2014

MESSAGE FROM THE
Welcome to the 2014 Kansas City Symphony Guild Homes of Note Tour. After a brief break from the tour last year, we are back in full swing. This year’s holiday homes tour is hosted at Tiffany Greens, a Don Julian development, and will celebrate The Hanging of the Greens, with three lovely homes decorated for the holidays. One is brand new; we are barely allowing the family time to get settled before opening it to the public. The second is a gracious, warm and inviting home, and the third is absolutely amazing! Clearly, this is an opportunity NOT to be missed! As in the past, a great variety of vendors will provide their wares for sale in the boutique, located in the Tiffany Greens Community Center. The Homes of Note Tour is a Northland tradition, the premier holiday homes tour in our area. As always, all proceeds will benefit the Kansas City Symphony and its educational and outreach programs. Join us for a day of beautiful decor, shopping and friendship, knowing that you are supporting an extremely worthy cause. Sincerely, Madeline Johnson

MEMBERSHIPS The Kansas City Symphony Guild is one of five auxiliary organizations affiliated with the Symphony, and it is the only auxiliary with a base north of the Missouri River and downtown Kansas City. The Guild’s purpose is to support and promote awareness of the Symphony. The Guild was organized in 1971 as the Philharmonic Guild North. Its purpose was to support and promote the Kansas City Philharmonic Orchestra. When the orchestra reorganized as the Kansas City Symphony in 1983–1984, the Philharmonic Guild North was renamed the Kansas City Symphony Guild with the same purpose. The Guild sponsors two annual events: the Homes of Note Tour, now in its 39th year, and the Cabaret Concert, which features a silent auction, delicious dinner and spectacular themed performance by the Kansas City Symphony. The 2015 Cabaret Concert will be Sunday, April 19, 2015. Please see the website for more details. Guild members meet the first Wednesday at 10 a.m. from September to May at the North Cross United Methodist Church. In addition, the group enjoys holiday and spring social luncheons. There are currently more than 60 active members and almost 80 total members in the Guild. For information on membership, visit kcsymphonyguild.org.

This will be the first Christmas for the Beatty family in their new home, located on a lot they love with golf course and lake views. Douglas and Elizabeth Beatty already lived in Platte County and wanted to continue to live there to raise their nine-year-old daughter. “The best thing about building is that you get to design everything from scratch,” Elizabeth says. A key part of that design includes “surprise” components, such as the playroom with a hidden door from the daughter’s bedroom and the two entrances to the pantry. Elizabeth also loves the spacious and inviting kitchen. Favorite holiday decorations include the Elf on the Shelf, various Santas and “anything that sparkles,” she adds.

Kristen and Rob Cremer fell in love with this home during the Parade of Homes. “Thankfully we lucked out and found the house of our dreams without having to build it,” Kristen says. Kristen loves the combined living room and kitchen area. “It is perfect for large family gatherings. Everyone can be together yet still have plenty of space.” Rob’s favorite feature is his tucked-away office, while their five-year-old daughter loves her pink playroom that is attached to her bedroom. Tour-goers should look for the Cremers’ nutcracker collection. “We started the collection when we first married in 2003,” Kristen says. “Most are gifts, and some are very rare.” Also, keep an eye out for the Elf on the Shelf, which is a part of their child-centered holiday traditions.

When Kristin Stitt and James McGraw toured this house, it was love at first sight. The all-brick, elegantly comfortable home met all their needs: It was in a perfect location, with easy access to the interstate, and it was available almost immediately — they moved within 35 days of listing their previous home. “It was way more house than three people needed, but it was hard to compare anything else to it!” Kristin says, adding that their second-grade daughter frequently sees her three stepsiblings on the weekends at home. The fact that the house is decorated for the holidays in mid-November is a rarity. “I usually put the tree up, under duress, on Christmas Eve and take it down on the 26th,” Kristin says. “I had the family in shock when I agreed to do the Homes of Note tour, but it is for a great cause, so what the heck!”

Pepita Brittle with Sea Salt and Orange-Infused Dark Chocolate
Of all the holiday sweets, brittle gets a bad wrap. So I gave the old-school recipe a modern (and mouthwatering) makeover. The result? This is not your grandma’s candy. With just a few added spices, a swap of pepitas for peanuts and a dip of dark chocolate, brittle misconceptions will be broken on the first bite. The combination of cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla give a comforting taste and aroma. Plus, the dark chocolate, infused with orange zest and sea salt, adds a luscious layer of light crunch and rich flavor. Put your dentist on speed dial. Brittle is making a comeback this holiday season.

sea salt for garnish
For the brittle: Spray a parchment-lined baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray; set aside. Bring sugar, water and corn
syrup to a boil in a medium saucepan, stirring until sugar is dissolved. Use a candy thermometer and cook until it reads 290 degrees (7-10 minutes). Remove from heat. Stir in pepitas, spices, butter, baking soda and vanilla.
Continue stirring until the mixture crystallizes and reaches 305 degrees (5-6 minutes). Return the pan to moderate heat and cook, stirring constantly until sugar melts completely and mixture turns a caramel color (3-4 minutes). Immediately remove from heat and pour mixture onto the baking sheet. Using a heatproof spatula, spread the mixture evenly. Let cool for 30-40 minutes. Break brittle into pieces.
For the sea salt and orange-infused dark chocolate: Combine orange zest and dark chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 30-second increments until completely melted. Dip brittle pieces in chocolate then sprinkle with crushed pepitas and sea salt.

National Collection Week is Nov. 17-24 1. Choose a Box
4. Include Your Donation
Use an empty shoe box (standard size, please) or a small plastic container. You can wrap the box (lid separately), but wrapping is not required. Most importantly, pray for the child who will receive your gift.
Please donate $7 or more for each shoe box you prepare to help cover shipping and other project costs. You can give online by using the “Follow Your Box Donation” option, or you can write a check to Samaritan’s Purse (note “OCC” on memo line) and place it in an envelope on top of the gift items inside your box.
2. Boy or Girl? Determine whether your gift will be for a boy or a girl, and the child’s age category: 2-4, 5-9 or 10-14. Print out the appropriate boy/girl label by downloading the artwork at www.SamaritansPurse.org. Mark the correct age category on the label and tape the label to the top of your box.
3. Fill with Gifts Fill the box with a variety of gifts that will bring delight to a child. Ideas include small toys, school supplies, hygiene items, hard candy, ball caps, hair clips, etc. You can even include a personal note to the child receiving the box.
5. Drop Off Place a rubber band around each closed shoe box and drop off at the collection center nearest you during our collection week, Nov. 17-24.
For locations and hours of collection, visit www.SamaritansPurse.org. There you can find the nearest place to take your shoe box by entering your ZIP code, or you can call 1.800.353.5949.

We’re taking a look back at design trends throughout the last 28 years. Here’s a flashback to 1987.
CREATING HOLIDAY TRADITIONS BY DIANE VOGEL
New or Old, Happy Holiday Traditions Donʼt Just Happen, Theyʼre Created!
PHOTOGRAPHY BY DOUG HAMER This Hyde Park area Bed & Breakfast home of Edward and Carolyn Litchfield, “Donnleigh Wallaugh,” is as splendid a holiday home as could be in Kansas City. Shaped with tradition to a “tee,” the tri-story home built in 1914 is a childhood dream. Above: The Bed & Breakfastʼs foyer and staircase carry a classic green and red array, sprinkled with speciallydesigned white lighting. Left: Red ribbons, poinsettias and fresh greenery drape the Hyde Park homeʼs holiday mantel while the classic red leather loveseats and wing chairs tie in nicely.
A FIRE CRACKLES in the fireplace and the rich aromas of holiday food waft through the house. Slowly burning candles highlight the timeworn decorations, adding to the festive mood. Three generations of family are seated at the dining table — the oldest carves the turkey, and the youngest anxiously awaits a drumstick. It’s a beautiful, romantic picture. But unfortunately, today it is less and less the reality. Families are scattered all over the country, and the traditional gathering is very difficult to orchestrate. Anyone recently divorced, widowed, retired, or relocated to an unfamiliar city faces a major social adjustment, particularly during the holiday season. Most of us here in Kansas City are entrenched in traditional values — the experiences we have cherished from childhood. Today, when the old rules and old circumstances no longer exist, it is time to take a fresh look at changing values. While continuing family traditions from childhood may no longer be possible, there are countless possibilities for creating “new” traditions. A tradition need not be elaborate. It might be something as simple as serving pumpkin soup in a natural pumpkin shell, or using grandmother’s quilt for a holiday tablecloth. It could be trimming the tree with Christmas cookies, making a gingerbread house, or adding one new special decoration. It might be celebrating Chanukah by adding a handmade menorah each year. If your Kansas City home doesn’t lend itself to seating a large group, limit the number of guests to those you can serve comfortably, or serve buffet style. Keep the menu simple and appropriate. This is not the time to make major redecorating changes in your home, or to try a complicated recipe for the first time. A tree-trimming or wreath-making party is an excellent ice breaker. Or perhaps a gift-wrapping party in which each guest brings his own gifts, wrapping paper and ribbons to share what is normally an isolated task. For this kind of event, it might be fun to serve the food picnic-style, using blankets on the floor and individual baskets of food. A little originality goes a long way in developing new traditions. The uncomplicated and unpredictable ways of celebrating the spirit of a holiday are the most memorable. Diane Vogel, a Kansas City interior designer, has decided that 1987 is the year to finally rearrange her family’s holiday traditions.
