“Lonely Planet” (Netflix — Oct. 11, Movie Premiere)

A reclusive novelist (Laura Dern) arrives at a writer’s retreat in Morocco, hoping the remote setting will unlock her writer’s block. While there, she meets a young man (Liam Hemsworth), and what starts as an acquaintanceship evolves into an

Q: I was interested when Eugene Levy and Dan Levy were announced as the hosts of the latest Primetime Emmy Awards. Had a father and son ever done that together before? – Linda Cain, Amherst, N.Y.

A: No, that was a first, and those behind the ceremony — including ABC, which televised it — were quite happy to trumpet that fact. It wasn’t merely a stunt, either, since both men are Primetime Emmy winners (Eugene for both “Schitt’s Creek” and the classic “SCTV” franchise, and Dan for “Schitt’s Creek”).

Of course, the Emmy organizers were banking on co-hosting rapport between the two Levys that you simply can’t buy, given their personal familiarity with each other as well as their professional connection. It was the first time since 2018 — when “Saturday Night Live’s’ Michael Che and Colin Jost presided over the event on NBC — that the Emmys had dual hosts, which in its own way suggests that a “right” combination is desired in having more than one celebrity guide the show.

A dreamboat is in the lifeboat on his way to save lives in the brand-new medical drama “Doctor Odyssey,” premiering Thursday, Sept. 26, on ABC. Starring Joshua Jackson (“Fatal Attraction”) as Dr. Max Bankman, the series follows the crew and passengers of a luxury cruise ship called The Odyssey as they indulge in pleasures onboard while managing unexpected medical emergencies.

Leading the ship’s voyage through the open ocean is Capt. Robert Massey, portrayed by legendary TV procedural actor Don Johnson, star of “Miami Vice” and “Nash Bridges.” Having notably been the bad guy in two recent films — the 2024 Netflix crime drama “Rebel Ridge” and the 2019 whodunit hit “Knives Out” — “Doctor Odyssey” is a return to charming form for Johnson.

“Killer Cakes” -

competition show where bakers with terrifying skills attempt

some of the most frightening challenges ever produced for television. Contestants will work with the best horror special effects artists in Hollywood to unleash their twisted imaginations and create cakes so disgusting, so disturbing, and so realistic, it’s the stuff of nightmares.

Also starring in the upcoming series are Phillipa Soo (“Shining Girls”) as nurse Avery Morgan and Sean Teale (“The Gifted”) as nurse Tristan Silva, members of Dr. Bankman’s medical team onboard the ship. And the three of them aren’t just co-workers. With lots of downtime between emergencies, the three medical professionals

With the scent of “PSLs” hanging in the air, Chef Damaris Phillips is ready to celebrate Halloween, and does so as she hosts the latest season of this pumpkin carving competition, which sees 14 of the best carvers from across the globe (including contestant Titus Arensberg) battle it out, crafting masterful jack-o-lanterns. Season 5 of “Outrageous Pumpkins” makes its debut this Sunday, Sept. 29, on Food Network, with a fun-filled special feature available online, at youtube.com/ watch?v=kKtiO7S23V0

have become quite close. If the teaser trailer is to be believed, there is a bit of a love triangle going on outside the ship’s OR.

“Doctor Odyssey” is written, co-created and executive produced by prolific TV storyteller Ryan Murphy, whose other fall debut series this year include the horror series “Grotesquerie” and the true crime drama “American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez” on FX, not to mention several continuing series across other networks and streamers.

Like most of Murphy’s work, major plot and character details are being kept under wraps until the series premiere, but one exciting cameo was revealed in an official trailer for “Doctor Odyssey” released in August. Canadian country superstar Shania Twain (“That Don’t Impress Me Much”) appears in a yet-to-be-confirmed role, though we do know she hits the dance floor with the captain during a black tie event on the ship.

From the synopsis to the trailer, it is clear that “Doctor Odyssey” has that signature Murphy procedural sheen. Like his previous series, the premise may seem outlandish — how many kinds of emergencies can possibly be called in to “9-1-1” — only for all of the pieces to fit perfectly together to make an endlessly entertaining watch that supports equally-successful spinoff series.

At the ABC Upfronts in May, before the series had even begun filming, series star Jackson spoke with TVLine about what the vision was for “Doctor Odyssey,” saying, “the word that [Murphy] first used with me is ‘sparkle,’ that everything should have a sparkle in your eye.” From the spotless ship to its beautiful passengers and professional crew, it all glimmers on The Odyssey. Jackson also spoke to Deadline at Upfronts about what he could share pre-production, having got his hands on the scripts. “Ryan Murphy doesn’t write normal procedural television, so the world that this doctor lives in is going to be as over the top and outrageous as you would expect.”

Jon Robin Baitz and Joe Baken, who both recently collaborated with Murphy on the Emmy-nominated second season of “Feud,” co-created and executive produce “Doctor Odyssey” with Murphy, while frequent Murphy collaborator Paris Barclay (“Sons of Anarchy”) directs the series.

Hill, Dolphins look to keep positive momentum going against Titans

The NFL season is in full swing as fans get excited for another week of football action with the Tennessee Titans gearing up to take on the Miami Dolphins at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, Monday, Sept. 3, with all the action airing live on ESPN.

Week 4 is here and the Miami Dolphins are looking to continue building off an incredible season of milestones, despite coming up short in an AFC Wild Card game for the fifth time in franchise history.

However, since the acquisition of superstar wide receiver Tyreek Hill in 2022, the Miami Dolphins have been a team on the come up, reaching a record of 11-6 in 2023 with the hopes of improving that record and making a deeper playoff run.

Hill’s role will be crucial to their success this season, after an outstanding 2023 season, in which Hill racked up 1799 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns, leading the entire NFL in both categories. This season, the Georgia native has yet again set the ambitious goal of reaching 2,000 receiving yards, something that has never been achieved by a wide receiver in the NFL.

Meanwhile, for visiting opponents Tennessee Titans, they enter the 2024 season with a fresh sense of optimism after a lengthy search for a head coach in the offseason, appointing Brian Callahan as the new Titans head coach. Looking to help turn the team around after going 6-11 last season will be Titans quarterback Will Levis who in the last matchup against the Dolphins fared quite well, throwing for 327 yards, 23 completions and one touchdown.

BEST POLITICAL MOVIES

“Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” (1939): James Stewart is the very embodiment of an idealistic political novice in director Frank Capra’s classic, demonstrating how an honest man can buck a corrupt system and succeed.

“All the King’s Men” (1949): Broderick Crawford earned an Oscar for best actor as bombastic Southern politician Willie Stark, who burns a few too many bridges en route to being elected governor.

“The Manchurian Candidate” (1962): All roads lead to a political convention in director John Frankenheimer’s great thriller, with Laurence Harvey as a brainwashed war veteran with one of the most manipulative mothers in screen history (very memorably played by Angela Lansbury).

“Advise & Consent” (1962): Henry Fonda has a key role in producer-director Otto Preminger’s version of Allen Drury’s bestseller about a potential Secretary of State’s nomination by an ill president (Franchot Tone).

“Seven Days in May” (1964): In another Frankenheimer film, the U.S. president

(Fredric March) faces a potential military coup led by the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (Burt Lancaster) in a gripping melodrama with a script by Rod Serling.

“The Best Man” (1964): Gore Vidal’s play makes a compelling screen drama, with Henry Fonda and Cliff Robertson as two of the people vying for their party’s presidential nomination. Turner Classic Movies shows the film Friday, Oct. 4, as a selection in the month-long series “Making Change: The Most Significant Political Films of All Time.”

“The Candidate” (1972): Robert Redford’s political awareness is well-known, but he wisely lets the story do the talking in this cleverly crafted satire that earned writer Jeremy Larner an Oscar.

“All the President’s Men” (1976): Both a great political drama and a great journalism drama, the saga of the Nixon-era Watergate scandal sees Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman lead an amazing cast as reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein.

“The American President” (1995): A romantic fantasy, this comedy-drama

also has a lot on its mind regarding the basics of politics, as one might expect from a script by “The West Wing” mentor Aaron Sorkin. Michael Douglas plays the widower who occupies the White House; his liaison with a lobbyist (Annette Bening) draws lots of attention.

“Wag the Dog” (1997): In director Barry Levinson’s satire, a professional spin doctor and a Hollywood producer (Robert De Niro, Dustin Hoffman) are enlisted to create a fake war, in order to divert the public’s attention from the sitting president’s (Michael Belson) personal scandal.

“Bulworth” (1998): What if a politician told it exactly like it is? Warren Beatty pulls out all the stops as writer, director and star of this hilarious comedy about a senator who goes for broke.

“Primary Colors” (1998): As with the book by the later-revealed “Anonymous,” there was little doubt who the president and first lady — played by John Travolta and Emma Thompson — really were supposed to be in director Mike Nichols’ well-cast film version.

Culinary crusade: New season of ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ proves Ramsay’s chefs can take the

Season 23 of “Hell’s Kitchen” continues with a fire-hot new episode airing Thursday, Oct. 3, on Fox.

Having first premiered on Fox in May 2005, introducing fans to the foul-mouthed, opinionated and highly talented Gordon Ramsay (“Kitchen Nightmares”). Now approaching its 20th year on air — with more than 350 episodes in its run — “Hell’s Kitchen” continues to fascinate and entertain its viewers, with its 22nd season (which premiered last September) delivering the series’ most streamed season debut ever, according to Fox, propelling Gordon’s brainchild to rank as fall 2023’s No. 1 cooking show among adults 18-49.

Now, with its most recent season, the legacy of “Hell’s Kitchen” lives on, following along as, per Fox’s description, “aspiring chefs from across the restaurant industry are put through an intense culinary academy to prove to chef Ramsay they have the talent and tenacity to come out on top each week.

“Only those who can take the searing heat of ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ will continue to compete each week until one prevails as the winner,” the description finishes. At stake is a life-changing grand prize, including a chef position held at one of Ramsay’s many renowned restaurants across the country, and the career-making title of “Hell’s Kitchen” champion.

heat

This latest round of the competition was produced at the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut — where one of Ramsay’s Hell’s Kitchen restaurants is located — acting as the perfect background for a take-your-chances battleground. Confirmed to arrive in 2025, the series’ 25th season will also be filmed in this location.

“As my very first show on Fox, ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ holds a very special place in my heart and it’s incredibly gratifying to have it renewed for its 23rd and 24th seasons,” said Ramsay. “This show just keeps getting better and better, and with Fox, ITV and A. Smith & Co. as my partners, you can expect even bigger challenges, stronger talent and more intense competition in Hell’s Kitchen in the years to come.”

With Ramsay, Arthur Smith (“American Ninja Warrior”), Kent Weed (“Acting Out”), Kenny Rosen (“Gordon Ramsay’s 24 Hours to Hell and Back”) and Bernie Schaeffer (“Edge of Alaska”) serving as executive producers, Season 23 of “Hell’s Kitchen” continues Thursday, Oct. 3, on Fox.

Right in the ring: ‘WWE
finds a new home on The

On the air since 2012 and showcasing the brightest young talent in the sports entertainment world — including the likes of wrestlers Roman Reigns, Seth “Freakin” Rollins and Charlotte Flair — “WWE NXT” now goes to a brand-new network, making its live debut on The CW this Tuesday, Oct. 1.

This premiere follows a five-year agreement made in November 2023 between The CW Network and WWE Inc., which names the network as the exclusive home of “WWE NXT.” Per the agreement, The CW will air weekly events throughout the wrestling season (52 a year, without a Tuesday skipped), bringing “NXT,” which first launched its weekly format over a decade ago, “to broadcast television for the first time ever” (per The CW).

Led by WWE Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels, the series celebrates this monumental occasion with a special, two-stop tour. First, for “NXT’s” CW premiere episode on Oct. 1, the series travels to the Allstate Arena in Chicago for a live event featuring a special appearance by WWE Superstar CM Punk and hometown boy. Returning to WWE last year after a long hiatus, Punk is currently recognized as having a 434-day WWE championship reign, making history as the seventh-longest

record in WWE history. Having shown his love for the brand on multiple occasions, Punk is the perfect spokesperson to launch “WWE NXT” into a new era on The CW. Next, “NXT” heads to St. Louis on Tuesday, Oct. 8. There, fellow WWE Superstar Randy Orton makes an appearance at the Enterprise Center, riling up audiences as he reflects on his 20-year career as a third-generation professional wrestler (as the son of Bob Orton Jr. and the grandson of Bob Orton).

“We are thrilled to welcome the WWE brand into the CW Sports portfolio as they play an integral role in our mission to bring live sporting events to the network year-round,” said Dennis Miller, president of The CW Network, to World Wrestling Entertainment Inc. “‘WWE NXT’ is a perfect fit for The CW, thanks to its dynamic young talent featuring the hottest rising stars in the sport and exhilarating, unpredictable weekly events. The passion and engagement of WWE’s fanbase is unmatched, and we are eager to grow that audience as ‘WWE NXT’s’ new home on broadcast television.”

Starting with an exhilarating pair of episodes — and with plenty more to come — “WWE NXT” makes its debut on The CW this Tuesday, Oct. 1.

‘Dracula’

stirs scares again in Bela Lugosi tribute

For both the month of Halloween and a salute to screen legend Bela Lugosi, “Dracula” is a hugely appropriate film to start with. The 1931 horror staple leads a “Star of the Month” tribute to the actor when Turner Classic Movies shows it Wednesday, Oct. 2 — and it might be the early peak of the festival for many viewers, though lots of other Lugosi terror tales will be featured throughout the month, with “Murders in the Rue Morgue” (1932) and “The Wolf Man” (1941) being two more of the opening-night titles. Of course, Lugosi plays the Bram Stoker-created Transylvanian count with a taste for the blood of others; the actor came to the screen incarnation with some expertise, since he also had portrayed Dracula on Broadway. He would reprise the part 17 years later in 1948’s “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein” (which TCM has on Oct. 9), but for his definitive performance in the role, the first movie clearly is the top choice. Edward Van Sloan appears as the vampire’s nemesis, Professor Van Helsing, and Helen Chandler plays Dracula target Mina Seward.

more retro rewinds

“Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.” (Catchy Comedy, Sunday, Sept. 29): This spinoff of “The Andy Griffith Show” became a major hit for CBS and title star Jim Nabors, whose likably naive title character entered the United States Marine Corps and found endless ways to confound his commanding officer, no-nonsense Sgt. Carter (Frank Sutton). A weekend “Binge” marathon of the show continues here; the cast regulars also include Ronnie Schell and Allan Melvin.

“Frozen” (Freeform, Sunday, Sept. 29): This animated, Oscar-winning 2013 Disney feature had enormous success not only at the box office, but also as a social phenomenon – particularly since its song “Let It Go” was heard just about everywhere for a while. Kristen Bell supplies the voice of Anna, a princess who is estranged from her magically gifted sister Elsa (voice of Idina Menzel) in their youth, but they reunite in young adulthood to try to save their iced-over homeland. Josh Gad voices the popular snowman character Olaf; the 2019 sequel “Frozen II” follows immediately.
