Q: I was surprised to hear that Eamonn Walker is leaving “Chicago Fire.”

Was he on the show from the beginning? – Roy Granger, Antioch, Calif.

A: He was. There have been many comings and goings on the Dick Wolf-produced NBC drama over the years, but Eamonn Walker originated and stayed with the role of Deputy District Chief Wallace Boden right from the beginning of the show in 2012. The network has said that he will have “a recurring capacity” on the show going forward, something that also has been shown by other former cast regulars as Jesse Spencer and Monica Raymund in their returns to the series (though those haven’t been for long, admittedly).

Kara Killmer, Alberto Rosende and relative short-timer Rome Flynn also left “Chicago Fire” during the past television year. Walker’s portrayal of Boden over 12 seasons has cast a particularly long shadow, and one that will continue to be seen in the plentiful repeats of the program that are available via such outlets as ION Television, USA Network and Peacock.

Q: I heard that CBS is going to show Sylvester Stallone’s Paramount+ series “Tulsa King.” When does that start? – Greg Wayne, Tacoma, Wash.

A: The broadcast premiere of Season 1 is scheduled for July 14. CBS is hoping for results similar to those it has had by running much of “Yellowstone,” which scored significant ratings there despite the fact that the episodes had been shown previously by Paramount Network. Giving “Tulsa King” an over-the-air berth also serves as a lengthy teaser for its second season, which is slated to debut on Paramount+ in the near future … and possibly draw more subscribers to that streaming service, which clearly is one of the related hopes.

Humanity is being goaded into tearing itself apart in a brand new season of “The Boys.” The first three episodes of the ultra-violent, anti-superhero series premiere on Prime Video Thursday, June 13. New episodes drop weekly on Thursdays.

Last season, “The Boys” thoroughly explored how and why superheroes (or “supes” as they’re called in the series) serving as military weapons is a recipe for disaster, before hinting at the political storylines that dominate this upcoming season.

Victoria Neuman, portrayed by Claudia Doumit (“Timeless”), was revealed to be a secret supe who has been using her

powers to eliminate obstacles in her way as a congresswoman. This season, Victoria tries to step into the Oval Office while doing the bidding of an unrestricted, power-hungry supe.

Antony Starr (“American Gothic”) is Homelander, who has become an unstoppable force after learning last season that he can maintain a loyal following no matter what awful things he does in plain view of everyone. Together, Homelander and Victoria stoke division and erode America’s democracy for their own gains.

Returning this season are Karl Urban (“Thor: Ragnarok,” 2017) as Billy Butcher, Jack Quaid (“Oppenheimer,” 2023) as Hughie Campbell, Erin Moriarty (“Jessica Jones”) as Annie January/Starlight, Jessie T. Usher (“Smile,” 2022) as Reggie Franklin/A-Train, Laz Alonso (“L.A.’s Finest”) as Marvin T. Milk, Chace Crawford (“Gossip Girl”) as Kevin Moskowitz/The Deep, Tomer Capone (“One on One”) as Serge/Frenchie, Karen Fukuhara (“Suicide Squad,” 2016) as Kimiko Miyashiro, Colby Minifie (“Fear the Walking Dead”) as Ashley Barrett and Cameron Crovetti (“Big Little Lies”) as Ryan. New additions to the cast are Susan Heyward (“Hello Tomorrow!”) as Sister Sage, Valorie Curry (“The Lost Symbol”) as Firecracker and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (“The Walking Dead”) in an as-yet-unnamed role. Morgan is no newcomer to the antihero scene, he starred as the Comedian in 2009’s “Watchmen” big screen adaptation.

In an official trailer for the new season, Morgan’s character embraces Butcher and joins him for a drink with the two of them looking like old friends. Terminally ill after using too much of an experimental drug that temporarily boosted powers in the final showdown last season, Butcher is also on the outs with the rest of The Boys who have had it with his manipulations. The only way to keep Homelander and Victoria from destroying humanity is to get the band back together and take them on.

“The Boys” is an adaptation of the popular comic book series of the same name by Gareth Ennis and Darick Robertson, published from 2006-2012. Ennis’ earlier work “Preacher” was also recently adapted into a four-season TV series on AMC, airing its final episode in 2019.

Juan Soto looks to remain in top form against rivals Boston Red Sox

The 2024 Major League Baseball season continues as the storied rivalry between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox plays out on the field Sunday, June 16, at Fenway Park in Boston. Both teams are battling for top spot in the American League East, with the Yankees currently leading the division. The game airs live on ESPN.

The Yankees, led by manager Aaron Boone, have been a force this season. With a good mix of seasoned veterans and rising stars, they have one of the most well-rounded teams in the league.

One player fans will certainly be watching is Yankees outfielder Juan Soto, who has been a standout and consistent performer in 2024. Acquired in a blockbuster trade during the off-season, Soto has fit seamlessly into the Yankees lineup, providing a major boost to their offensive firepower.

Statistically, Soto has been a powerhouse this season, hitting .311 with 11 home runs and 37 RBIs over 48 games, while his on-base percentage (.411) and slugging percentage (.552) have made him a well-rounded threat of power and consistency at the plate this season. Pulling from her humble beginnings, in which she learned how to cook and bake alongside her grandmother, Nancy was able to hone her craft in kitchens across the U.K., eventually earning herself a spot on Season 5 of “The Great British Bake Off,” which she won with a flourish — and as the series’ oldest winner to date, as of 2014 — despite only taking baking seriously after her retirement.

“Now,” shares The CW, “Nancy is on a mission, traveling across America to save struggling bakeries. With the help of her master carpenter, Erik Curtis, she reimagines and revamps recipes, renovates storefronts and puts passionate pastry makers on a path to success,” using her talents inside the kitchen and out to help blossoming businesses find their footing and evade “bakeruptcy.”

“Through devouring books, taking tips and inspiration from people she meets and lots and lots of trial and error, Birtwhistle has acquired an incredible breadth of baking knowledge,” the network continues. “She loves the creativity of baking and the simple rewards of watching others enjoy something she’s baked.”

Documentary celebrates release of Black Barbie, four decades later

Before 1979, Barbies only came in one color. Hear the stories of three women who brought diversity to Barbieland, in Lagueria Davis’ (“1 in 3,” 2010) feature-length documentary “Black Barbie,” premiering Wednesday, June 19, on Netflix, in celebration of Juneteenth.

Wearing a bright red jumpsuit and a fabulous “wrapand-snap” disco skirt, with a look meant to emulate Diana Ross (“The Boss,” 1979), the first official Black Barbie made its way to shelves in early 1980, with a box donning the slogan: “She’s Black! She’s beautiful! She’s dynamite!” And she was.

Barbie is an astronaut, a doctor and a ballet dancer — but before the release of Black Barbie, she was always white. The only African American dolls made in Mattel’s collection (all three introduced throughout the ’60s) were void of the infamous moniker, instead made as friends to Barbie, like Francie (1967), Christie (1968) and Julia (1969). That all changed when three Black women — Stacey McBride Irby, Beulah Mae Mitchell and Kitty Black Perkins — cleared a way forward for the introduction of the company’s first Black Barbie, a doll who better represented Mattel’s diverse (and growing) clientele.

Tom Cruise tackles his first ‘Mission: Impossible’

What seemed like a great novelty at the time, with a movie superstar married to an elaborate update of a television classic, became an enduring franchise that’s still going. The first “Mission: Impossible” feature film – which Paramount+ With Showtime presents Monday, June 17, and Saturday, June 22 – casts Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt, an earnest and dedicated Impossible Missions Force agent determined to finish an assignment that sees the elimination of much of the rest of his team.

Directed by Brian De Palma, the 1996 picture also involves veteran operative Jim Phelps (played here by Jon Voight) plus a Hunt ally portrayed by Ving Rhames, who became a constant player in the “Mission” movies. Kristin Scott Thomas, Jean Reno, Emmanuelle Beart, Henry Czerny and Vanessa Redgrave also have prominent roles in the fast-moving, good-looking project that has a terrific climax set aboard a European train. The eighth film in the series is slated to arrive in theaters next summer.

The film, produced by Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers (both of “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Bridgerton”) for Shondaland, provides the perspective of the three women responsible for the project — Irby, Mitchell and Perkins — examining the importance of equal representation in all areas of life, from play to work, from childhood to adulthood, and “how these dolls have become crucial to the construction of identity and imagination” (per Shondaland). Rhimes, who has previously worked with Mattel, through the Barbie Dream Gap Project — “a global mission dedicated to closing the gap by challenging gender stereotypes and helping undo the biases that hold girls back from reaching their full potential” (per Mattel) — was quoted as saying: “You cannot be what you cannot see,” and continues Irby, Mitchell and Perkins’ mission even today, with the release of this film.

From executive producers Grace Lay (“The Deal,” 2022) and Sumalee Montano (“The Lost Symbol”) for LinLay Productions, Camilla Hall (“Subject,” 2022) for Lady & Bird Films, “Black Barbie,” premieres Wednesday, June 19, on Netflix.

“Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In” (Catchy Comedy, Sunday, June 16): A sketch-comedy series that had very much its own style, this show was a much-discussed 1968-73 hit for NBC. Concluding a weekend-long marathon here, the program had Dan Rowan and Dick Martin as ringmasters as various characters and guest stars (from John Wayne to President Richard Nixon) wandered through or popped out of windows concealed within a psychedelically designed wall. Goldie Hawn, Lily Tomlin, Arte Johnson, Ruth Buzzi, Henry Gibson, Judy Carne, JoAnne Worley and announcer Gary Owens were among the ensemble members who made names for themselves.
